The e-learning domain has witnessed a shift from the traditional behavioral approach to an individual centered learning approach based on learning analytics, with the aim of creating personalized and learner sensitive designs. A systematic literature review of 284 articles published between 2011 and 2022 in 133 different journals was conducted to investigate this trend. Bibliometric analyses were performed. The results of the analysis show that there is an increasing trend towards the implementation of learning analytics and the use of these analytics for personalized learning environments. The results also show that the output levels of learning analytics have progressed from description and diagnosis to prediction and perspective building. This has the potential to improve the fields of learning analytics and personal learning environments.

The purpose of this current study is to explore the move structure presented in abstracts of the research articles from Thai Scopus Journals (TSJ) and Top-Ranked Scopus Journals (TRSJ) in Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching. Ninety abstracts were analyzed and separated equally between those two journals. The five-move framework established by Hyland (2000) was used to analyze the move pattern, showing different dominant patterns: I-P-M-Pr-C in Thai Scopus Journals and P-M-Pr-C in Top-Ranked Scopus Journals respectively. In Thai Scopus Journal, the results indicated that the introduction is optional, the conclusion, purpose, and method are considered conventional, and the product is obligatory. Similarly, in Top-Ranked Scopus Journals, the product is obligatory, while the purpose, method, and conclusion are conventional. These findings could offer practical insights into abstract structures and hold importance for educational purposes, offering guidance for the effective writing of abstracts in research articles.

In recent years, academic interest in new developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its ethical challenges in higher education has increased. The new emerging technologies that have become popular among the university community in recent times require an exhaustive study to evaluate their impact on academic integrity and plagiarism. The main stakeholders in higher education (SoTL, educational authorities, and policymakers) must understand the new trends and the most relevant studies to have action guides that preserve academic integrity standards in deploying AI in the university. This research analyzes scientific articles published in high-impact journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) (n=254) and carries out a bibliometric study using VOSviewer 1.6.18 and WordStat 2023.1. The Normalized Impact per Document (NID) and per Year (NIY) are studied, and four thematic groups and twelve main themes are identified and discussed, allowing the internal research structure of this field of study to be determined. Based on the findings, a roadmap for implementing AI in higher education is proposed, preserving ethical standards and based on three levels (Micro, Meso, Macro). This study offers practical implications for SoTL, academic authorities, and policymakers. Furthermore, the evidence found allows editors of high-impact journals to advise on unclosed gaps and new research trends and new research trends in the area.

Doctoral students require scientific writing skills and appropriate learning media assistance to meet publication requirements in distinguished journals. This investigation evaluates the efficacy of Moodle and OJS in teaching dissertation proposals, based on the experiences of engineering doctoral students, to provide suggestions for the optimal platform. The study examining the efficacy of the OJS-based learning model for developing dissertation proposals as compared to Moodle for engineering doctoral students revealed varying results based on the statistical methodology used by UEQ. While the Comparison of Scale Means indicated OJS to be superior across all scales, the Two-Sample T-Test established significant differences solely on a few scales. While the OJS learning model may have a higher mean value, its superiority across all aspects of UEQ cannot be assumed. To enhance student learning experience, outcomes, and the learning model itself, optimization of all UEQ scales is imperative in the OJS-based approach to dissertation proposal development.

This paper reports the findings of a bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer on 392 Scopus database documents published from 2003 to 2022, aiming to understand the global landscape of the e-learning field and to identify the most prominent authors, institutions, countries and reference publications, as well as the research topics that have recently received the most attention in students' readiness for e-learning in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The findings indicate that there has been an upward trend in e-learning readiness among students in HEIs over time. Among the countries studied, the United States, Taiwan, Australia, and Malaysia were found to have the most effective approaches to addressing students' readiness for e-learning. The most highly cited author in this field is M-L. Hung. Based on the citations, the most recognised journal in this field was "Computers and Education" and the universities that were most persuasive were two Taiwan universities in the first position. The data also revealed relatively low levels of collaboration among authors, institutions and nations regarding students' readiness for e-learning.

This study conducts a bibliometric analysis to map the research trends and intellectual landscape surrounding the development of scientific literacy assessments in educational contexts from 2019 to 2023. Scientific literacy, which encompasses the ability to comprehend, evaluate, and apply scientific knowledge, has emerged as a crucial competency in science education. However, existing assessment tools often prioritize factual recall over deeper conceptual understanding and critical thinking abilities. To address this gap, there is a need for innovative assessment approaches that holistically evaluate students' scientific literacy across multiple dimensions. Through a systematic analysis of 185 relevant publications from the Scopus database, this study investigates the numerical distribution of literature by year, document type, journal, author, institution, and country. Additionally, it explores the prominent themes, evolving topic trends, and emerging clusters within the scientific literacy assessment research domain. Bibliometric techniques, including citation analysis, coauthorship networks, and keyword co-occurrence mapping, are employed to provide a comprehensive perspective. The findings reveal a steady increase in publications focused on scientific literacy assessments, reflecting the growing recognition of this research area. The analysis identifies highly influential journals, articles, authors, and institutions actively shaping the field. Furthermore, it highlights key research themes, such as secondary education, teacher professional development, and information literacy. However, the integration of scientific literacy assessments with artificial intelligence remains an underexplored area, presenting opportunities for future research.

This study aimed to investigate research trends related to socio-scientific issues (SSI). The SSI articles analysed were from highest-rating five science education journals with the highest impact ratings, published between 2011 and 2022, including "Science Education" [SE], "Journal of Research in Science Teaching" [JRST], "Science and Education" [S&E], "International Journal of Science Education" [IJSE], and "Research in Science Education" [RSE]. A total of 87 selected relevant SSI articles were analysed to determine research types, research topics, research sample groups, research sites, and authors with the most citations. According to the research findings, IJSE articles are the most widely published articles compared to other articles of similar journals. It is revealed that the most discussed issues in those articles of IJSE are argumentation and decision-making, followed by the nature of science. Pupils in middle and high schools constitute the largest sample groups. The continent that has been widely selected as research sites is European continent. Meanwhile, the country with the most research sites is the United States. The data collection tool most frequently used in the research is interview. S&E's "Nature of Science," "Scientific Inquiry," and "Socio-Scientific Issues Arising from Genetics: A Pathway to Developing a Scientifically Literate Citizenry" articles are the most cited articles. Challenges such as addressing efficacy, emotion, and attitude remain noticeably unexplored in SSI studies. Furthermore, exploratory studies on SSI for early childhood education.

The accelerated adoption of distance learning in post-pandemic times has resulted in increasing research publications and review studies in a short time. This necessitates the exploration of a large corpus of academic publications for effective distance learning and learning strategies. As distance learning stakeholders have assimilated the transactional approach to understanding distance learning, transactional distance theory (TDT) is relevant to understand ways to reduce the distance between learners and educators for maximum effectiveness of distance learning. Our study applies TDT to review distance learning from a supply perspective and as a tool to ensure the improved quality of distance learning. This paper has two key contributions: we have presented evidence synthesis and conducted a foresight exercise. Following preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines, 275 documents published between 1994 and 2022 were identified for review. Our analysis revealed patterns, relationships, and trends in the application of TDT in various distance learning contexts. Most TDT research is conducted in social sciences (83.7%), with computer science accounting for 42.6% of the studies. The course materials' structure and design have also received considerable attention, with around 40.0% of the research focused on this area. For distance learning, studies revolve around factors such as student engagement, satisfaction, and TDT, which examine the distance between learners and instructors in various learning environments. Through systematic review and metaanalysis, we identify the three thematic areas in TDT research on distance learning. We have chartered themes on the effect of alternate design distance learning platforms on learner success, pushing the development boundaries in distance learning success through TDT, and the practical processes for designing successful distance learning courses via TDT-based pedagogical frameworks. In doing so, we streamline research in TDT and distance learning thematically and provide insight into further work. In addition, this study analyzed the relationships between sustainable development goal (SDG) and TDT literature. The co-citation analysis suggested that the strongest links were observed between education and innovation (SDG 4 and SDG 9), followed by education and gender equality (SDG 4 and SDG 5).

This systematic literature review examines the panorama of interculturality in rural contexts of bilingual education in Latin America. It aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge in Latin America and identify key themes, challenges, and gaps in the field. The review highlights the importance of recognizing and valuing linguistic and cultural diversity, particularly in marginalized rural communities. It also discusses the lack of adequate resources and educational policies as significant challenges to promoting intercultural bilingual education in these contexts. The findings underscore the need for further research and the development of effective strategies to enhance intercultural understanding and bilingual education in Latin American rural areas.

Metaverse is a technology which allow users to "experience" a digital universe and includes several components like augmented and virtual reality. Researchers who wish to research the field may not know where to start or the key features of the field. Thus, the present study aims to discuss the general and social, conceptual, and intellectual structures of the field for future researchers on metaverse. For this purpose, the general structure, scientific maps, and socio-intellectual structure of the field were investigated. Then, recommendations are presented for future researchers by bibliometric analysis results. In the study, the abstracts and keywords in publications indexed in the Scopus database and Web of Science database were reviewed. After the data collected from 439 publications were cleaned and combined, 328 documents were analyzed using R. The performance analysis revealed that the most productive writer in the field was Ayiter E., the most influential writer was Bourlakis M., the journal with the most publications was "The Journal of the Association for Information Systems", and the most cited study was "Avatars, People, and Virtual Worlds: Foundations for Research in Metaverses" published in that journal. The examination of the intellectual, social and conceptual framework within the field unveiled predominant associations of metaverse with keywords such as virtual, second life, augmented reality, avatar, virtual world, and virtual reality. The most frequent collaborations were between Korea, Japan and the United States on second life and e-learning.

Genre studies of Research Articles (RAs) have increased over the years. However, our review indicates that RA studies on RAs in the history discipline are still limited both to English and Indonesian languages. By identifying this gap, we are encouraged to analyze their rhetorical structures in the introduction section because this section plays an important role in publishing RAs in journals. For analyzing the rhetorical structure of both data sets, we employed the Create Research Spaces (CARS) model (Swales, 1990). The results showed that the rhetorical structures of English Research Article Introductions (RAIs) are similar to the CARS model, while the rhetorical structures of Indonesian RAIs in the present study do not conform to the model. This finding implies that Indonesian RAIs in the present study have different rhetorical structures from those found in English RAIs both in the present study and those in the CARS model. Besides, it implies that Indonesian authors in the History discipline meet challenges when they want to publish works in English journals. The present study aims to identify the most productive countries, journals, authors, institutions and the most used keywords in the field of special education during 2011-2020, based on the WoS database. The widespread effects of the papers and how they are related were analyzed with the bibliometric analysis method. The findings of the study showed that the USA is inarguably the most productive country, followed by England and Australia. On the other hand, there was a very strong positive correlation (r = 0.929) between the number of papers published by countries and their h-index, a similar finding was also found to be present between the countries' h-index and GDP per capita (r = 0.790). Moreover, it was found that the journals with the highest quartile (Q1 and Q2) in the field of special education published significantly more papers than the journals with the lowest quartile (Q3 and Q4). Matson, JL (USA), Sigafoos, J (New Zealand) and Lancioni, GE (Italy) were determined as the most prolific authors, respectively. Autism, intellectual disability, and Down syndrome were the phrases most frequently used as keywords. Our findings provide key information regarding the developments that the research direction of special education field has recently taken. This study also serves a potential roadmap for future studies.

This study aims at a detailed analysis of bibliometric studies in science education through articles published in peer-reviewed journals. The bibliometric network analysis performed on 846 articles in the Scopus database was conducted on the bibliographic data obtained using the VOSviewer program. In the citation analysis phase, the bibliometrix program, Lotka's law and author impact ratio measurements were used. The results obtained provide trends in the field of science education and important clues for researchers. According to the results obtained, it was determined that the most studies were carried out in 2022, according to years. According to the keyword analysis, it showed that the most frequently used keywords in articles were "education", "research", "bibliometrics", "citation analysis". Looking at the most frequently used terms, the terms "research productivity", "pandemic", "h index", "average" are respectively according to their high relevance scores. It has emerged that the most cited countries are the Spain, America, China, Brazil respectively. "Scientometrics", "Sustainability (Switzerland)", "Computers and Education", "Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology" are the most cited journals in studies.

A scientometric analysis and systematic review of an immersive virtual learning environment (IVLE) designed to improve the development of hard skills comprised this study. The review focused on the period between 2016 and 2023 and was conducted using the Scopus database. This study employed a scientometrics analysis and systematic review methodology. In this study, a comprehensive analysis was conducted on a corpus of 12 scholarly articles that have been published within the last 8 years. This study looked at the aggregate magnitude and trajectory of scholarly publications and looked at a number of trends in scholarly research, including annual reports, article counts, article distribution across different sources, finding the most useful sources, keyword analysis, looking into the best collaboration groups, looking at how themes have changed over time, judging contributions, and practical implications. The primary findings regarding the data and document types indicated that a total of 12 articles were published across 10 different sources within the timeframe of 2016 to 2023. The research conducted on IVLE for the development of hard skills exhibited fluctuations in its pace, alternating between deceleration and positive acceleration. The growth rate of the articles peaked in 2022. The primary publication with the greatest of source is "Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems." Keyword Plus growth rate for terms like "virtual reality," "e-learning," and "teaching." The nations exhibit a high degree of collaboration in the field of research. The findings indicated that the authors hailing from Mexico and Colombia exhibited the greatest frequency (n = 2). The thematic evolution of the study indicated two significant advancements: firstly, the emergence of e-learning studies that have propelled the field of e-learning, and secondly, the integration of virtual reality into e-learning practices. The classification of applications encompasses various components: title, solution, learning strategy, and learning tasks.

Student learning outside the formal classroom is inextricably linked to informal learning environments. In many countries, most activities that employ informal learning prioritize the integration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines and have shown a positive impact on increasing students' interest, self-efficacy, and awareness of the STEM field. Thus, this study aims to systematically review the activities reported in the relevant studies focusing on informal STEM learning for K-12. High-index journals published under SCOPUS and Web of Science databases were utilized using a predetermined search strategy and retrieved two research team members' screened articles. Only empirical studies containing the terms "STEM education", "summer camp", and "informal learning" in the title, abstract, and keyword were included. Data were coded and organized into a matrix that was qualitatively assessed and categorized into themes. Based on the 25 studies reviewed, it was found that the integration of STEM disciplines in informal learning is notably varied. The characteristics of the STEM activities can be organized into seven themes: inquiry, focus on problems, design, cooperative learning, student-centred, hands-on, and 21st-century skills. Practice recommendations include a quality curriculum that aligns with informal STEM learning needs.

This study pursued two major objectives. The first was to use bibliometric techniques to examine bidirectionality in the relationship between teachers and researchers, as indicated by collaborative authorship among these communities. The second was to explore more deeply knowledge mobilization to classrooms by documenting the extent to which research is cited in science education practitioner journals (SEPJ). Specifically, we examined: (a) the frequency of collaboration between researchers and practitioners in the writing of journal articles for both practitioner-focused and academic journals in science education, and (b) the extent to which authors of articles in practitioner-focused journals drew on academic research to support their advocacy for and/or description of science education programs, policies, or practices. Findings indicate that writing collaborations among academic researchers and practitioners are relatively infrequent, even on practitioner-focused articles. Also, articles in SEPJs more often cite books and other resources over academic journals, even those academic journals focused on informing science education teaching and learning. Recommendations include providing open access to published research, development of research summaries for lay audiences, and incentivizing practitioners to engage in research and writing. This study explores only one mechanism by which knowledge can be mobilized to classrooms and only one type of dissemination product (i.e., journal articles) upon which researchers and practitioners can collaborate. Additional limitations are noted including the applicability of the findings only to the specific journals and timeframes analyzed.

This paper analyses the methodologies in 148 empirical data-driven learning studies for L2 English in prestige journals to examine best practice. Manual coding and corpus analysis of key words and n-grams from the past 5 years (2018-2022) explore the field as a whole and how methodologies have evolved, suggesting improvements and future avenues for research.

Given limited investigation into the state and status of physical education policy research internationally, we suggest there is a need for a more comprehensive empirical review of physical education policy research internationally to inform a future research agenda. The purpose of this scoping review is to map the international peer-reviewed empirical literature detailing policy research in school-based physical education between 2010 and 2020 to understand and make recommendations for extension, where appropriate, of the conceptual boundaries of how to 'do' policy research in this field. We followed a three-phase approach to the scoping review: (i) identifying relevant sources; (ii) charting of sources; and (iii) reporting the findings from the charting of sources. Results were interpreted through two theoretical lenses: (a) Rizvi and Lingard's (2010) framework of policy issues and questions and (b) Diem et al.'s (2014) traditional and critical approaches to educational policy research. Findings are discussed in relation to the charting categories which included: journal; year; affiliations; country of work; funding acknowledgements; research question; policy definition; policy issues; and traditional and/or critical research. We hope this research can be useful to those looking to enter the physical education policy research space, as it introduces them to the research landscape, and to those already engaged in this space looking to fill gaps in the literature.

In its pursuit of global university rankings, Indonesia introduced a series of higher education policies, one in 2014 to grant autonomy to a select group of universities, and another in 2017 to tie financial and promotional incentives to scientific publications for all researchers. To examine scientific productivity surrounding these policies, we use bibliometric data from Scopus spanning three decades from 1990 to 2020. We investigate the patterns of publication and collaboration and analyze them across journal quartiles, academic fields, and researcher cohorts. Our findings reveal that publications increased dramatically for both autonomous and non-autonomous higher education institutions after 2014. Single-university authorship was common practice and skewed publication quality towards Q3 and Q4 journals, while co-authorships with foreign organizations pulled the shift towards Q1 journals consistently across all fields. New researchers starting in 2014 published fewer Q1 and more Q3 and Q4 publications than the earlier cohort. We highlight policy implications on the need for a balance between publication quantity and quality and call on Indonesian policymakers to introduce holistic higher education reforms rather than introducing reforms that focus on the performance of the university for ranking purposes.

This review study aims to understand the concept of adults' digital health literacy (DHL), a recently emerging significant concept but still confused. For this, we seek to find the core competencies of digital health literacy by comparing those of existing relevant literacy concepts (i.e., health literacy and digital literacy). We identified seven core competencies of DHL across analytical, context-specific, and socioecological aspects: (a) traditional literacy, (b) information literacy, (c) media literacy, (d) health-related literacy, (e) technology literacy, (f) scientific literacy, and (g) socioecological nature. We also found the shared core aspects among DHL and digital and health literacies. The findings of this study contributed not only to grasping the concept of digital health literacy better but also to providing a fundamental basis for programs to enhance the DHL of adults. This article concludes with discussions about the findings and practical and academic implications.

This study explored research trends in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Descriptive analysis and co-word analysis were used to examine articles published in Social Science Citation Index journals from 2011 to 2020. From a search of the Web of Science database, a total of 761 articles were selected as target samples for analysis. A growing number of STEM-related publications were published after 2016. The most frequently used keywords in these sample papers were also identified. Further analysis identified the leading journals and most represented countries among the target articles. A series of co-word analyses were conducted to reveal word co-occurrence according to the title, keywords, and abstract. Gender moderated engagement in STEM learning and career selection. Higher education was critical in training a STEM workforce to satisfy societal requirements for STEM roles. Our findings indicated that the attention of STEM education researchers has shifted to the professional development of teachers. Discussions and potential research directions in the field are included.

I dedicate this paper to my friend and colleague, Mike Fetters, who served as senior co-editor of the "Journal of Mixed Methods Research" (JMMR). In this paper, I discuss key mixed methods developments over the last 35 years, my fortunate involvement in them, and my collaboration with Mike Fetters in several of them. The discussion focuses on founding leaders of the field, combining quantitative and qualitative research, co-founding JMMR and the Mixed Methods International Research Association, teaching and simplifying mixed methods research, promoting the methodology internationally, assisting external groups in establishing quality standards for the field, and co-founding with Mike Fetters the Michigan Mixed Methods Research Program. This discussion contributes a personal historical perspective about the mixed methods field.

This article aims to explore the effects of doctoral publication requirements on the research output of Ukrainian academics in Scopus in terms of quantity and impact. Research output in Scopus, elaborated by Ukrainian academics in economics, medicine and physics who were awarded a doctoral degree in three time periods (before September 2013, after September 2013 and after September 2020) marked by changes in doctoral publication requirements was chosen for analysis. The study findings highlight that the publication requirements resulted in an increase in the share of doctorate holders with publications in Scopus. However, first, the share of PhD holders in economics and medicine who have publications in Scopus remains rather small. In these disciplines, 9.4% and 18.1%, of PhD holders and 44.6% and 47% of DS holders who were awarded a doctoral degree in 2020, have publications in Scopus. This can be attributed to the low standards applicable to doctoral theses in economics and medicine. Second, the median journal CiteScore quartile remained unchanged in all groups except for DS holders in physics. In their case, it rose from 3 to 2. Thus, in general, changes in doctoral publication requirements did not result in doctoral holders publishing in more impactful journals.

This article offers a content analysis of technical and professional communication articles related to user experience (TPC-UX) published between 2013 and 2022 in six TPC scholarly journals. This analysis reveals that TPC-UX primarily focuses on product and process topics and illustrates the terminological comingling of "user experience" and "usability." Specific TPC-UX topics identified include "theory," "multimodality," "health and medicine," "localization," "web design," "mobile applications," "accessibility," and "content strategy." These topics suggest that TPC-UX's key affordances are its attunement to networked power dynamics, its theoretically rich treatment of multimodality, and its strategies for navigating contextual complexities.

Frontiers pioneered an alternative model of publishing: Rather than libraries paying subscription fees to publishers to give library communities access to journals full of articles written, reviewed and edited (at no or modest cost to the publishers) by their own faculty, they instead charge the authors to publish articles that are then made freely available to the world. Some libraries responded by supporting faculty authors directly or negotiating fee reductions with Frontiers, and Frontiers also provides breaks to authors who do not have access to publishing funds. The enterprise has grown to over 170 journals across all fields of science, and the articles are highly cited. The Frontiers acceptance criteria is that the research be scientifically sound and cogently presented. The editor's view of potential impact or importance is disregarded. The public gets to decide on that.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the occurrence of preservice literacy coursework in a sample of graduate speech-language pathology programs in the United States and to investigate the relationship between the likelihood that programs offered literacy coursework and (a) geographical region, (b) Carnegie Classification of research activity, and (c) U.S. News & World Report ranking. Method: Course offerings were analyzed from a sample of 50 accredited speech-language pathology graduate programs that were selected through stratified random sampling using the strata of U.S. geographical regions and the Carnegie Classification of research activity. Results: Only 28% (n = 14) of the programs in the sample offered a course dedicated to literacy, 42% (n = 22) offered a course that embedded literacy content, and 14% (n = 7) offered both a course dedicated to literacy and a course that embedded literacy content. Descriptions of courses dedicated to literacy were at least 60% more likely to specifically reference training in literacy assessment or intervention than the descriptions of courses that embedded literacy content. Region, Carnegie Classification, and U.S. News & World Report ranking did not significantly predict the likelihood of programs offering literacy courses. Conclusion: This study corroborates surveys of speech-language pathologists regarding their preservice literacy training and reveals the continued need to increase preservice coursework focused on literacy in speech-language pathology graduate programs, ideally through courses that are dedicated to literacy and address both literacy assessment and treatment.

The Journal of Special Educational Technology (JOSET) has been a leading journal in the domain of technology application in special education since 1978 (Journal Searches, 2023; Resurchify, 2022; SCI Journal, 2023; Scopus, 2022). In this bibliometric study, we examined JOSET's growth, publication trends, contributions, and international collaborations using descriptive, intellectual, conceptual, and social structure analyses. Documents (i.e., articles, editorials, errata, letters, and notes) published in JOSET from 1996 to 2021 were retrieved from the Scopus database and analysed using Biblioshiny embedded in R studio. Co-citation and co-word analyses identified five and two clusters, respectively. The analysis of the collaboration structure in JOSET reveals a positive relationship among authors, with over 75% of publications resulting from collaboration. The results further suggest that the journal continues to keep pace with global trends and contemporary issues, which can enhance its impact and readership and drive the growth of its annual publication number.

Higher Education Institutions are expected to stimulate the innovation system and to contribute to the development of societies in a global perspective. Within this context, there is an increasing focus on internationalization. HEIs are developing institutional mechanisms to support internationalization while academics are expected to carry specific practices that allow them to improve the internationalization of knowledge production. At the same time, they are encouraged to engage with non-academic partners to co-produce and transfer knowledge, contributing, in this way, to economic and social development. Although there is some research on the impact of internationalization on academic entrepreneurship, studies on the effects in other dimensions of academic engagement with society are almost absent. This paper aims to fill this gap by analyzing the relationship between academics' internationalization practices and perceptions and the development of different types of academic engagement. Our analysis draws on quantitative analysis with data provided by an international survey (APIKS) and explores the Portuguese context. Findings show that the different practices and perspectives on internationalization impact differently on the way scientists engage. While there are positive effects of internationalization of research on engagement, the time academics stay abroad and the high focus on publishing in internationally high-rated journals may negatively affect academics' orientation towards the local community. This paper contributes to the debate on the role of the internationalization in the context of a knowledge-based society, considering different dimensions and a broad spectrum of knowledge-based engagement activities.

Procedural fidelity refers to the degree to which procedures for an assessment or intervention (i.e., independent variables) are implemented consistent with the prescribed protocols. Procedural fidelity is an important factor in demonstrating the internal validity of an experiment and clinical treatments. Previous reviews evaluating the inclusion of procedural fidelity in published empirical articles demonstrated underreporting of procedural fidelity procedures and measures within specific journals. We conducted a systematic review of "The Analysis of Verbal Behavior" (TAVB) to evaluate the trends in procedural fidelity reporting from 2007 to 2021. Of the 253 articles published in "TAVB" during the reporting period, 144 of the articles (168 studies) met inclusionary criteria for further analysis. Our results showed that 54% of studies reported procedural fidelity data, which is slightly higher than previous reviews. In comparison, interobserver-agreement data were reported for a high percentage of studies reviewed (i.e., 93%). Further discussion of results and applied research implications are included.

Recent reviews of behavior analytic journals suggest that participant demographics are inadequately described. These reviews have been limited to brief periods across several journals, emphasized specific variables (e.g., socioeconomic status), or only included specific populations. The current scoping review included all published articles in "The Analysis of Verbal Behavior" from 1982-2020. Six demographic variables were coded for 1888 participants across 226 articles. Despite small sample sizes (i.e., fewer than six participants in 62.3% of studies), only age (85.4%) and gender identity (71.6%) were reported for the majority of participants. Socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, and primary language were reported for fewer than 20% of participants. Over time, the number of demographic variables reported showed a slight increasing trend, although considerable variability was observed across years. These findings suggest that editors and reviewers must consider what constitutes acceptable participant characterization. Researchers might also be emboldened to extend their work to populations currently underrepresented in the journal.

Evidence from the Library and Information Science (LIS) literature shows that academic librarians can effectively collaborate on or lead faculty development initiatives. However, it is not clear if and how librarians' engagement with faculty development is represented within the Faculty Development (FD) literature. This study reviews three FD journals to determine how librarians are represented in the FD literature. The findings support the need for increased dialogue between faculty developers and librarians about the potential for librarians to meaningfully contribute to faculty development programming.

Education research commonly uses racial terminology but with little understanding of racial classification patterns across the field. In this study, we surface the use of racial terminology using a census of original research published in American Educational Research Association journals between 2009 and 2019. We do so as an ethical quantification exercise, seeking to further social justice goals by encouraging scholarship on racial terminology in education research. Using latent class analysis, we identify six classes of research ranging from about a third of articles that use almost no racial terminology to an eighth of articles that use terminology extensively. More recently published articles are more likely to be part of classes with extensive or narrow racial terminology usage and less likely to be in classes that are absent racial terminology. Qualitative research is more likely to use extensive racial terminology, and quantitative research is more likely to be absent of or narrowly use racial terminology. We conclude with recommendations for how future research can build off of these findings to address questions on how to authentically and purposefully use racial terminology in ways that reflect the complex ways people identify themselves to better situate education research to address racial inequality.

The literature search underpins data collection for all systematic reviews (SRs). The SR reporting guideline PRISMA, and its extensions, aim to facilitate research transparency and reproducibility, and ultimately improve the quality of research, by instructing authors to provide specific research materials and data upon publication of the manuscript. Search strategies are one item of data that are explicitly included in PRISMA and the critical appraisal tool AMSTAR2. Yet some authors use search availability statements implying that the search strategies are available upon request instead of providing strategies up front. We sought out reviews with search availability statements, characterized them, and requested the search strategies from authors via email. Over half of the included reviews cited PRISMA but less than a third included any search strategies. After requesting the strategies via email as instructed, we received replies from 46% of authors, and eventually received at least one search strategy from 36% of authors. Requesting search strategies via email has a low chance of success. Ask and you might receive--but you probably will not. SRs that do not make search strategies available are low quality at best according to AMSTAR2; Journal editors can and should enforce the requirement for authors to include their search strategies alongside their SR manuscripts.

Review studies are vital for advancing knowledge in many scientific fields, including mathematics education, amid burgeoning publications. Based on an extensive consideration of existing review typologies, we conducted a meta-review and bibliometric analysis to provide a comprehensive overview of and deeper insights into review studies within mathematics education. After searching Web of Science, we identified 259 review studies, revealing a significant increase in such studies over the last five years. Systematic reviews were the most prevalent type, followed by meta-analyses, generic literature reviews, and scoping reviews. On average, the review studies had a sample size of 99, with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines commonly employed. Despite certain studies offering nuanced distinctions among review types, ambiguity persisted. Only about a quarter of the studies explicitly reported employing specific theoretical frameworks (particularly, technology, knowledge, and competence models). Co-authored publications were most common within American institutions and the leading countries are the United States, Germany, China, Australia, and England in publishing most review studies. Educational review journals, educational psychology journals, special education journals, educational technology journals, and mathematics education journals provided platforms for review studies, and prominent research topics included digital technologies, teacher education, mathematics achievement, and learning disabilities. In this study, we synthesised a range of reviews to facilitate readers' comprehension of conceptual congruities and disparities across various review types, as well as to track current research trends. The results suggest that there is a need for discipline-specific standards and guidelines for different types of mathematics education reviews, which may lead to more high-quality review studies to enhance progress in mathematics education.

The body of literature on English Language Teaching (ELT) research is increasing, but there is a paucity of bibliometric studies in this field. Thus, this bibliometric study visualizes a cumulative statistical report on the growth of studies with their impact and presents the research trends for further directions. This bibliometric study was conducted quantitatively by analyzing publication trends by year, country, institution, and citation; leading journals and authors; keywords for emerging themes in ELT on the 803 published research articles in the Scopus database from 2013 to August 2022. For analyzing data, this study employed two software, that is, VOSviewer and Harzing's Publish and Perish software. The findings showed that the most productive year was 2021, with 149 publications. The highest number of publications was published in Turkey (n = 92). The highest number of publications was produced by Sultan Qaboos University, Oman (n = 17). The highest number of citations (123) was received by the study of Bruton in 2013. The number of research studies is increasing, and the leading country, institutions, and authors are mostly from the EFL or ESL contexts. The results found that there were 144 different journals and conferences as well as 159 authors during this specified time frame. Finally, the finding showed that there were 2,460 authors' keywords and 14,268 keywords in the title and abstract. On the basis of the analysis, this study also presents future directions for practitioners, researchers, and policymakers.

This study presents a bibliometric review of teacher professional identity (TPI) research from 2004 to 2023. 4,066 SSCI-indexed papers retrieved from the Web of Science database were identified for analysis using CiteSpace. The major findings are: (1) The publications have increased significantly from 2004 to 2021, there is a slight decline in recent 2 years. (2) Top contributing country, institution, and journal are the US, University of London, Teaching and Teacher Education respectively. (3) The top productive authors are Yuan Rui, Trent John, and Nazari Mostafa respectively, the top cited authors are Beijaard D, Gee JP, and Lave J. (4) TPI research has evolved in terms of multiple theoretical lens, diversity of discipline and participants, and methodological shift. (5) Emerging trends include teacher agency, positioning theory, and English-medium instruction (EMI) policy. This study has implications for future researchers.

The rapid development of artificial intelligence has driven the transformation of educational evaluation into big data-driven. This study used a systematic literature review method to analyzed 44 empirical research articles on the evaluation of big data education. Firstly, it has shown an increasing trend year by year, and is mainly published in thematic journals such as educational technology, science education, and language teaching. Chinese and American researchers have made the greatest contributions in this field. Secondly, the algorithmic models for big data education evaluation research are diverse, the text modality is the most popular, the evaluation subjects are mainly college students, with fewer primary and secondary school students, and science is the discipline that most commonly applies big data education evaluation. The evaluation objectives of big data education evaluation mainly focus on five aspects: high-order thinking analysis, learning performance prediction, learning emotion recognition, teaching management decision-making, and evaluation mode optimization, and the text modality is widely used for data collection in high-order thinking analysis; regardless of the evaluation objectives, higher education students are the most widely evaluated objects; the science discipline is the main field of using big data technology to empower teaching evaluation. Thirdly, the current research topics of big data education evaluation mainly focus on online learning behavior and environmental participation evaluation, process assessment of learning motivation and emotional analysis, development and optimization of subject domain big data models, cognitive diagnosis and high-order thinking skills evaluation, and design of learning analysis frameworks based on data mining.

Estimates of the price or value of the individual journals within a full-text database may be useful to librarians engaged in serials reviews or other collection development projects, to scholars investigating the determinants of journal prices, and to publishers seeking to rationalize their pricing strategies. This paper evaluates six methods of apportioning the cost of a full-text database among the individual journals in the database--methods based on variables such as journal size, total citations, Journal Impact Factor (JIF) percentile, and single-journal list price. Each method is evaluated based on how well the resulting prices can be predicted by the determinants of journal prices identified in previous research. Although the six methods yield similar results, the single best option is to use price estimates that account for JIF percentile. If citation data are not available and cannot be estimated, the best alternative is to rely on the equal-value assumption--to split the total price equally among the wanted journals in the database.

A growing scholarly literature in a subfield of applied linguistics focuses on language testing and language requirements for migrants. We sought to understand what theoretical paradigms and methodological approaches have framed this research and propose future research directions. To this end, we conducted a systematic review of articles on language testing and migration published between 2001 and 2022 in the applied linguistics field. For each of the 46 studies which met inclusion/exclusion criteria, we randomly selected a control article from the same journals. Both the test corpus and the control corpus were double coded for theoretical and methodological characteristics and analysed using contingency tables, Mann-Whitney tests, and forward stepwise logistic regression to predict group membership. The findings revealed that literature on language testing and migration is highly reliant on critical theory and less reliant on features associated with empirical methods. We suggest that research in this domain would benefit from methodological reflexivity (i.e. questioning prevalent assumptions and employing theoretical variety) and that complementary approaches could lead to a more nuanced research consensus and promote research-policy collaboration.

The present study assesses linguistic and geographic diversity in selected outlets of SLA and multilingualism research. Specifically, we examine over 2,000 articles published in specialized top-tier journals, recording the languages under study and their acquisition order, author affiliations, the country in which the research was conducted, and citations. In the sample, there were 183 unique languages and 174 unique pairings, corresponding to 3 per cent of the world's 7,000 languages and less than 0.001 per cent of 24.5 million possible language combinations. English was overwhelmingly the most common language, followed by Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. North America and Western Europe were both the main producers of knowledge and the main sites for research on multilingualism in the sample. Crucially, the regions with the highest levels of linguistic diversity and societal multilingualism (typically the Global South) were only marginally represented. The findings also show that studies on English and northern Anglophone settings were likely to elicit more citations than studies on other languages and settings, and that less studied languages were included more frequently in article titles.

Many online learning experiences integrate some form of dialogic interaction among instructors and learners. However, the degree to which these individuals come to a mutual understanding of their task and topic, a phenomenon called intersubjectivity, often remains a question. This systematic review of online learning research examines 48 peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2004 and 2021, looking at the overall trajectory of the research conversation across time, disciplines, modality and learning activities; major trends in methods, and focus; and interconnectedness. Findings suggest a dispersed body of literature, with some small groups of interconnected work but little cohesion or traction as a research field. This review has implications for future researchers in this area, who are encouraged to synthesize across this body of research and work together to establish and pursue an agenda for the field that will not only further inquiry in this area but also lead to practical knowledge about learning activity design and facilitation that is useful to online instructors.

This systematic review examined research on moderators in asynchronous online discussions (AODs) through a review of 52 sources published over the past four decades. Areas of interest included conceptual frameworks cited in research, publication trends, instructional contexts, research methods and characteristics, and descriptions of the role of the moderator with implications for practice. Results indicate: (1) nearly half of the publications did not cite a conceptual framework focused on moderation; (2) the field is diverse with a wide variety of themes for research designs, outcomes, foci, and questions; (3) half of reviewed publications involved case studies or similarly limited study designs; (4) the majority of publications collected data on students in higher education, but there was a lack of consistency in the reporting of demographic information; (5) research foci tended toward investigating peer moderators or the role of the instructor; (6) research questions tended to focus on strategies of moderators or student performance and discussion quality; (7) most definitions or expectations of a moderator included discussion and social management duties. We conclude by discussing the implications of some of the findings and future research options.

Reading is one of the main skills to be learned and used in schools and through the entire life of an individual. Its crucial importance made reading one of the central topics in different academic disciplines such as education, psychology, linguistic and neuroscience. Advances in multidisciplinary approaches to and studies of reading gave us the reason to talk about the science of reading. Improvement in research into reading during the last century reveals the fact that different approaches emphasized the importance of partially different aspects of reading skills. Different approaches presented sound arguments for different priorities in teaching and learning of reading. For some decades ago strong dichotomic arguments were so sharp that in the United States the reading literature talked about 'the reading wars'. During the recent decades, the debate of reading and approaches to reading, reading skills and reading processes have changed. Studies of reading presented different arguments for partially different priorities. The Reading Teacher (RT) has for many decades been the one of the most important arenas for the presentation of new findings, ideas, arguments, and trends. Our present corpus-based study captured the frequent collocations and their usage in the RT publications -- 952 articles comprising 3 548 008 words - during the last decade, 2012-2021. TreeTagger was used for part-of-speech tagging and CQPWeb/CWB framework was employed as the corpus interface in the analysis process. The findings clearly revealed that "reading comprehension" was the most frequently used collocation, and it has never weakened its position in the RT publications in the last decade. While instructional activities and processes like 'shared reading', 'during reading', 'while reading', and 'after reading' were given considerable attention, 'before reading' was almost forgotten. Findings also show that linguistic diversity among students, particularly in the US, also made an impact on the emerging of new topics and thus frequency of concepts like bilingual, multilingual, translanguaging, and coaching. Findings related to the ascending and descending trends reading collocations in RT publications regarding other aspects of reading, teaching of reading, and reading processes are discussed and some ideas for future research are presented.

Structural equation modeling (SEM), as a flexible and versatile multivariate statistical technique, has been growingly used since its introduction in the 1970s. This article presents a methodological synthesis of the characteristics of the use of SEM in L2 research by examining the reporting practices in light of the current SEM literature to eventually provide some empirically grounded recommendations for future research. A total of 722 instances of SEM found in 145 empirical reports published in 16 leading L2 journals across two periods of 1981-2008 and 2009-2020 were systematically reviewed. Each study was coded for a wide range of analytic and reporting practices. The results indicate that despite the growing popularity of SEM in L2 research, there was a wide variation and inconsistency in its uses and reports within and across the two periods in regard to the underlying assumptions, variables and models, model specification and estimation, and fit statistics. Drawing on the current SEM literature, we will discuss the findings and research implications for future use and reporting of SEM in L2 research.

Differentiated instruction is an important teaching approach that adapts educational experiences to fit the varied needs and learning styles of students in the classroom. This study examines the trend of research on differentiated instruction, using a bibliometric analysis to understand the current state of research in this area. The analysis was performed using online databases such as Scopus to locate relevant research articles from 1961 to 2023. The results of the analysis revealed that 746 articles were examined, focusing on factors such as publication year, language, journal, authors, and keywords. The findings indicate a gradual increase in research on differentiated instruction, with a significant rise in the number of articles published in recent years. The majority of the research articles were written in English and authored by scholars from universities in the USA and Europe. The keywords used most frequently in the articles included differentiated instruction, inclusive education and differentiation. This study provides a comprehensive view of the research trends in differentiated instruction, underscoring the need for further research to enhance our understanding of the approach's effectiveness and its impact on student learning outcomes. Recommendations for future research in the field of differentiated instruction include the need for research on themes and concepts that are less studied in the field, such as the application of differentiated learning in online learning, and the use of technology in differentiated instruction.

This study examines the methodological dimensions of programming education articles published in educational sciences journals indexed in SSCI by exploring their general trends. To do this, 162 articles published between January 2012 and February 2020 in 30 international journals indexed in SSCI were analyzed with a systematic review method using the "Educational Technology Publication Classification Form" as a data collection tool. The results revealed that most of the studies in this field were conducted in the United States and Turkiye. The number of these studies has increased since 2015, and those studies were carried out using quantitative research methodology. Mostly questionnaires and achievement tests were used as a data collection tool, a convenience sampling method was used, and descriptive analyses were adopted to analyze the data. As a result, the articles examined in this study showed that programming education positively contributes to learners' learning and success levels and the development of their computational thinking skills. We believe that these results will shed light on future studies related to programming education.

Scientific journals play a critical role in disseminating knowledge, and staying up to date with research findings in a particular field can be challenging given the vast number of journals and research topics available. Therefore, there is a need for researchers to occasionally summarize the main research topics in order to help fellow researchers navigate the contents more effectively. In this context, this article aims to review the research topics published in the Problems of Education in the 21st Century journal between 2018 and 2022. A total of 285 abstracts were retrieved from the Web of Science database and analyzed to identify the most common research topics and the contributing countries. The top 10 research topics identified were self-efficacy, distance education, professional development, critical thinking, foreign language, thinking skills, COVID-19, academic achievement, emotional intelligence, and special education. The authors of the papers came from 62 countries, with most of the papers coming from Türkiye, South Africa, Indonesia, Brazil, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Malaysia, Sweden, Lithuania, and Serbia. In conclusion, this study highlights the relevance and diversity of research topics in the Problems of Education in the 21st Century journal, underscoring the need for a nuanced, context-specific approach to education research. The findings of this study have important implications for researchers, policymakers, and educators seeking to address the key challenges and opportunities facing education in the 21st century.

In recent years, the number of academic studies in the field of science communication has increased. It is important to make a general examination of the studies on science communication and to reveal their distribution according to years and countries in order to draw the framework of science communication studies. The main aim of this study was to analyze the science communication-based articles published in journals in the Web of Science (WoS) index in the last 22 years. Within the scope of the study, articles were scanned by typing keywords such as "topic", "title", "keywords" science communication from the WoS database and 322 articles were examined by bibliometric analysis method. As a result of the study, the articles published between 2000 and 2022 were examined according to years, countries, funding organizations, research area, publishing houses, country scores and citations. According to the results, most articles were published in 2022(N = 58); USA, UK, Australia, Germany ranked first with the number of articles and SAGE (N = 74) ranked first in publisher distributions. This study offers a global perspective on science communication and proposes a vision for future research.

The main objective of this qualitative research is to determine how academicians perceive publication fetishism at universities in Turkey. The data were collected with interview technique, and analyzed with content analysis technique. The study group consisted of 16 academicians from 5 different universities in Turkey. Research results revealed that most academicians of this sample try to make more publications in order to get promoted without looking at the quality of their publications. A further result shows that quantity-based evaluations and promotion process affects the quality of publications negatively. As a result of fast publication thought, academicians publish their articles in predatory journals which are below international standards. Also as a result of this competitive atmosphere process, academicians experience anxiety and inner disturbances in their professional and personal lives. It is recommended that quantity-based evaluations at universities should be replaced with quality-based ones.
