Mass audiences usually learn specialized terms from mass communication media. This research featured political terms obtained from 50 political news pieces published in the French-language magazine GEOAdo (2013– 2022) with 10–15-year-olds as target audience. The authors used general scientific methods, as well as the lexical analysis and the qualitative content analysis, to divide the terms into three groups, i.e., political organizations, political documents, and political activities. The political organizations from first group were often represented by abbreviations, which were accompanied in the news text by their dictionary definition or an explanatory interpretation of the main functions. The terms from the second group were explained by introducing a full or brief dictionary description. The terms from the third group were introduced by paraphrasing their dictionary definition with a stress on the main activity or other political references. In general, the political terms were explained by paraphrasing their dictionary definition with the key feature emphasized, which made news comprehension easier for young readers.

This paper examines the development of the periphrastic passive voice construction in Swedish between 1300 and 1750, from the point of view of constructional change. The development involves the rise of a new auxiliary, bliva 'remain', originally a lexical loan from Middle Low German, which after a period of variation replaces the older auxiliary varda 'become'. The findings reveal that the origins of the periphrastic passive construction may be found in mutative constructions with varda and adjectival complements, and the same development is then found with the loanword bliva, delayed by some hundred years. The results of quantitative analysis place the turning point in the development between 1450 and 1550. This article explores the origin and development of three periphrastic constructions in Vedic Sanskrit, aiming, on the one hand, to establish their relative chronology and, on the other hand, to pinpoint the systemic factors that facilitated their rise and development at different historical stages. An important claim of the paper is that the rise of the various periphrastic constructions under scrutiny is closely related to more general developments characterising the tense/aspect systems from Proto-Indo-Iranian to Middle Indo-Aryan. In this article, I present a type of verb reduplication observed in Rioplatense Spanish that has not yet been discussed in the literature. This type of construction, which I will call emphatic affirmative verb reduplication, is similar to a type of reduplication present in European Portuguese but has specific properties that make it different and it simultaneously motivates an alternative analysis to that proposed in the literature. Here, I provide a comprehensive description of the phenomenon, situating it within the set of other reduplications, and outline a syntactic proposal that captures the main properties of the phenomenon.

Identifying the meanings of grammatical elements in context is a major challenge for corpus-linguistic studies of grammatical variation. This study proposes a novel solution to this problem. I describe the situated meanings of grammatical elements as latent constructs, i.e., social concepts that cannot be observed directly but need to be inferred from the way that speakers behave. I use Latent Class Analysis (LCA) to create a data-driven typology of meanings for three modal periphrases in spoken Spanish and compare this typology to manual classification of the data in terms of modality. My findings show that (a) the situated meanings identified by the LCA do not directly correspond to the modal meanings that are commonly assumed to govern the variation between the three periphrases, and (b) the data-driven typology of meanings explains better the variation between these periphrases.

This paper intends to explore the grammatical properties and meaning of pseudo-coordinative structures, as agarra y les paga or va y se muere, registered in different colloquial varieties of Spanish speaking countries. Pseudo-coordination produces grammaticalized constructions of two verbal forms inflected on the same morphological categories and united by the conjuction y, which denotate a unique event, since the first verb is desemantized or grammaticalized. A relevant fact is that the same grammaticalized verbs intervening on pseudo-coordinative structures (besides ir and agarrar, venir, coger, pillar, saltar and llegar, and the more novel volver, arrancar, largarse, lanzarse, ponerse, meterse, mandarse) function (or functioned) as periphrastic auxiliary verbs, often with an inchoative or ingressive meaning. Empirically, the paper concentrates on determine the grammatical distribution of pseudocoordinative structures, differentiating them to inchoative periphrasis, in order to offer a consistent syntactic and semantic analysis of these constructions. This will lead us to conclude that the primary meaning of grammaticalized pseudo-coordinative structures is aorist aspect (Smith, 1991; Camus Bergareche, 2004), in the same lines as Coseriu (1966) and in opposition to recent perspectives, as García Sánchez (2007) and Jaque et al. A partir de un diseño de enseñanza y aprendizaje, esta investigación caracteriza las consideraciones de estudiantes bachilleres sobre los significados del verbo venir en sus diversas manifestaciones en las construcciones perifrástica venir a + infinitivo y en la conjugación simple, en el “El nuevo sol en Teotihuacán” y en usos cotidianos conocidos y empleados por los estudiantes. El estudio, inicialmente, contempló los significados de movimiento, cambio de estado, terminar algo y otros, propuestos por los estudiantes, quienes, además, establecieron relaciones entre rasgos y matices semánticos involucrados, escribieron otros ejemplos y trataron de explicar la distinción entre venir a encontrar y encontrar. High school students' conceptions about periphrastic venir “to come” and in simple conjugation in “The new sun in Teotihuacan”and in everyday uses Abstract Based on a teaching and learning design, this research characterizes the considerations of high school students about the meanings of the verb venir “to come” in its various manifestations in the periphrastic constructions venir a + infinitivo “to come a + infinitive” and in the simple conjugation in “El Nuevo Sol en Teotihuacán” and in everyday uses known and used by students. The study initially considered the meanings of movement, change of state, finishing something and others proposed by the students, who, in addition, established relationships between features and semantic nuances involved, wrote other examples and tried to explain the distinction between venir a encontrar “coming to find” and encontrar “to find”. The activities promoted the learning of the characteristics of the periphrastic verb venir “to come” and in simple conjugation. The results show multiple meanings contemplated on these verbal expressions in the mythological story and in everyday examples, the difficulty in distinguishing between both verbal expressions, as well as the processes of periphrastic metaphorization and grammaticalization in the meanings involved.

In Spanish, tener que and haber que + infinitive are modal periphrases that convey deontic meanings. The present investigation analyzes these periphrases as variants used in diverse communicative settings by different kinds of participants, acting as either speakers/writers or addressees. Tener que + infinitive tends to appear in those contexts where a more striking implication or unavoidable recommendation is needed. Haber que + infinitive is used more in a wide range of genres promoting a desubjectivizing-deontic meaning. As for the sex/gender of the participants, men more frequently use tener que + infinitive, whereas women tend to employ haber que + infinitive. The latter feature was also found to be significant when the sex/gender of the addressee is unknown; also, tener que + infinitive resulted more frequently in texts to be read or listened by women. The sociolinguistic distribution of the meanings conveyed by each periphrasis helps to delineate communicative styles based on the objectivity-subjectivity dimension. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This contribution proposes a new interpretation of Les sept épées, the third lyrical intermezzo of Apollinaire’s romance La Chanson du Mal-aimé. In spite of a quite impressive number of interpretations, several problems of this text have remained unsolved. My basic assumption is that the complete understanding of the poem requires a sexual reading of its seven stanzas. The swords appear to be symbolic representations of Apollinaire’s physical desires. The young lover of the English governess Annie Playden felt deeply frustrated by her refusal of his proposals. The painful experience inspired an almost allegorical poem, in which the devotional representation of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows was transformed into a succession of phallic images. My analysis tries to show that the seven swords evoke the masturbatory fantasies of the unfortunate lover. The physical character of his passion may explain why the poem contains so many enigmas. Contrary to the pornographer, the poet could not openly expose his obsessions, but was compelled to conceal them by using different hermetic tropes and figures of style such as anagram, word-play, portmanteau words, periphrasis, allusion, and symbol. Apollinaire’s vast knowledge of both erotic and esoteric literature enabled him to employ such obscure formulations that his poem continues to puzzle the uninitiated reader. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the historical development of the construction disponerse a + INF is analyzed, as a carrier of an aspectual value of imminence. Specifically, those lexical-grammatical criteria that allow observing the process of grammaticalization and constructionalization of the scheme are explored. In addition, the semantic expansion from the imminent value to the inchoative and causative value is studied. Throughout the paper, contrasts are made with the diachronic trajectory of poner(se), since this form has exerted an analogical influence on disponer(se). From a theoretical perspective, it interacts with the model of grammaticalization and with the constructions grammar applied to the historical study of verbal periphrasis. At the methodological level, the research is based on the elaboration of a database with the integral registry of the examples from CORDE, which allows projecting quantitative as well as qualitative linguistic analyzes. As a result, the grade of grammaticalization and constructionalization of the item is described, the chronology of its imminence, inchoative and causative values are explored, and the proximity of the construction with the paradigm of aspectual verbal periphrasis is reflected. The combination of the verb ἔχω with the active or middle aorist participle (e. g. ἔχω γράψας) acquires a limited degree of productivity as a periphrastic construction in classical Greek literature, notably tragedy (Sophocles, Euripides) and Herodotean prose. Traditionally, this so-called σχῆμα Σοφόκλειον has been regarded as a suppletive periphrasis stepping in for as yet unavailable synthetic perfect forms at a time when the (object-)resultative use of the perfect became increasingly widespread. However, a variety of distributional, formal, and semantic arguments speak against this theory. Instead, it is argued here that the σχῆμα Σοφόκλειον arose as a means of disambiguating resultative from narrative aorists, and that only its disappearance in the fourth century is directly related to the history of the perfect. Since it had always been confined to a relatively narrow range of linguistic registers and pragmatic contexts, the σχῆμα fell out of use as the perfect gradually strengthened its hold on the resultative domain. Traditional approaches to verbal periphrasis (compound tenses) treat auxiliary verbs as lexical items that enter syntactic derivation like any other lexical item, via Selection/Merge. An alternative view is that auxiliary verbs are inserted into a previously built structure (e.g., Bach 1967 , Arregi 2000 , Embick 2000 , Cowper 2010 , Bjorkman 2011 , Arregi and Klecha 2015). Arguments for the insertion approach include auxiliaries' last-resort distribution and the fact that, in many languages, auxiliaries are not systematically associated with a given inflectional category (Bjorkman's (2011) "overflow" distribution). Here, I argue against the insertion approach. I demonstrate that the overflow pattern and last-resort distribution follow from Cyclic Selection (Pietraszko 2017)—a Merge counterpart of Cyclic Agree (Béjar and Rezac 2009). I also show that the insertion approach makes wrong predictions about compound tenses in Swahili, a language with overflow periphrasis. Under my approach, an auxiliary verb is a verbal head externally merged as a specifier of a functional head, such as T. It then undergoes m-merger with that head, instantiating an External-Merge version of Matushansky's (2006) conception of head movement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present investigation analyzes the use of a construction traditionally described as impersonal: the periphrasis haber que + infinitive. This is a variable phenomenon in Spanish grammar studied as a meaningful choice based on the cognitive conceptualization of salience. The construction conveys a meaning of duty, obligation, recommendation or convenience by which the speaker accepts the situation described as unavoidable. Its use is analyzed in the texts of the Corpus Interaccional del Español, which comprises a wide range of genres and communicative situations. The hypothesis posed is that the meaning conveyed by haber que + infinitive contributes to the shaping of a communicative style based on the desubjectivity cognitive dimension.

This paper deals with auxiliary verb constructions in Romance, in particular with those that exhibit two auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘be’ which alternate, in many Italo-Romance varieties, within one and the same paradigm. It is argued that such an intra-paradigmatic distribution represents a special kind of grammaticalization, traditionally referred to as morphologization. Two aspects are discussed. First, a morphological approach to such ‘mixed paradigms’ is advocated, the main claim being that in order to explain the distribution of the two auxiliaries within the paradigm, one has to make essential reference to paradigmatic structure rather than to the intrinsic featural composition of the auxiliaries (along the lines of paradigmatic approaches reviewed in Blevins 2016). Second, it is shown that these mixed systems, although they often represent “delicate transitional stages” (Loporcaro 2014: 56, n. 8), also display interesting diachronic convergence typical of various stem alternation patterns, famously referred to as morphomes (cf. Maiden 2018). The paper draws on a dataset that is currently being put together in order to become, in the future, a large database of mixed perfective auxiliation systems. Some space is thus devoted to the description of the main parameters of this project, called ‘MIXPAR’.

This paper is based on the idea that the study of peripheral phenomena or marginalia in language can shed new light on the interpretation of other, less marginal linguistic data. Specifically, it focuses on the joining or separation of linguistic elements, which is often considered a typically marginal phenomenon, but which constitutes one of the syntactic criteria for classifying verbal periphrases. For this purpose, interpolation, i.e. the separation of the two components of a periphrasis by another element, is examined in three specific cases: , and . The analysis offers clues for reconsidering interpolation as a criterion for the classification of periphrases. At the same time, the study makes it clear that, on the one hand, verbal periphrases are characterised by a type of syntactic ambiguity and, on the other hand, their semantic value is decisive in determining their periphrastic nature. In recent years, there has been increased academic interest in missionary linguistics. However, whereas much has been written on Spanish missionary linguistics, above all in the Americas, relatively little has been published on Dutch missionary linguistics. This article aims to address this situation by analyzing the texts written in Malay by Dutch missionary linguists in the seventeenth century in the East Indies, now Indonesia. It begins by providing an account of the history of the Malay language, focusing above all on the influence of other languages including Sanskrit, Arabic, and Portuguese on the Malay lexicon. It then describes the activities of the Dutch East India Company in the Indonesian archipelago. After providing a comprehensive account of the texts that the Dutch missionary linguists wrote in Malay, the article analyzes the linguistic strategies that they employed as they attempted to overcome the gap between their language and culture and the Malay language and the culture in which it was embedded. It does so using a fourfold typology: loanwords, loan translations or calques; periphrasis and conceptual transfer. The picture that emerges is that authors made extensive use of all four strategies to communicate the Christian Gospel in Malay. One interesting result is that Dutch missionary linguistics used very few Dutch loanwords in their Malay texts. The article analyzes possible reasons for this. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While it has long been assumed that the Greek dialectal variants εὐθύς 'straight' and ῑθύς 'id.' are etymologically related to Vedic sādhú- 'id.', the phonological discrepancy in the material preceding the reflex of *-dh– in each of these comparanda has defied explanation. This paper argues that the variation can be explained by appeal to well-documented features of PIE syntax and derivational morphosemantics, chiefly, the predicative instrumental periphrasis with causative *dheh1- 'put, make, do' and the parallel derivation of i-stems, u-stems, and root-nouns employable as substantives, in this case, the adjectival abstracts *séh1-/sh1- 'length' (: én-loc. *sh1-én 'for a long time' [> ON sí 'ever'] → *sh1-én-o- 'long-existing' [> Ved. sána- 'old']), *só/éh1-i- 'id.', and *só/éh1- u- 'id.' derived from *√seh1- 'long' (Lat. sērus 'late', OIr. sír 'long'). Directly comparable to the calefacio-type as analyzed by Jasanoff (1978) and to the cvi-construction of Old Indic (Schindler 1980; Balles 2006), the equivalent phrases *sh1-éh1/séh1-i-h1/séh1-u-h1 dheh1- 'lengthen, elongate' are reconstructed as the bases of compound thematic adjectives (e.g., rūbidus-type, Nussbaum 1999) whose patientive sense 'elongated, extended' conditioned the Property Conceptual (Rau 2009) meaning 'straight' and from whose substantival acrostatic u-stem derivatives were formed the proterokinetic etyma of sādhú-, ῑθύς, and εὐθύς. This article proposes that verbs in Matlatzinca (Otomian; Oto-Pamean; Oto-Manguean) fall into five inflectional classes, which the authors call 'conjugations'. The article focuses on the forms that make up the paradigms of these five classes. The conjugations of Matlatzinca are based on inflectional constructs that are largely periphrastic in composition, which means that the exponents in the constructions are not prefixes but behave like prosodic words, independent from the lexical stem of the verb being inflected. However, such exponents are not verbal auxiliaries but grammatical markers. We also show that class membership of the conjugations is determined by transitivity value. Three of the classes contain only transitive verbs, while the two remaining ones contain only intransitive verbs. One of the intransitive conjugations contains middle verbs. Transitive verbs are inflected as members of this middle class to obtain passive or middle voice readings. Wherever possible, the constructions are illustrated with examples from natural speech. In this paper, we analyze the perfective progressive periphrasis (PPP) in Brazilian Portuguese (BrP) and Argentinian Spanish (AS) in a comparative way. Based on different linguistic tests, we make two statements regarding the PPP in comparison with the imperfective progressive periphrasis (IPP). Firstly, we claim that the PPP has a progressive and perfective meaning. Secondly, we claim that the PPP allows iterative readings when combined with telic events (i.e., achievements in BrP and AS and accomplishments just in AS). We propose a syntactic and semantic analysis which accounts for these observations in a compositional way: while the gerund form expresses a progressive meaning (present in both periphrases), the auxiliary on the PPP expresses a perfective meaning which allows the iterative readings observed in this periphrasis. Overlapping suppletion, where two or more lexemes share identical forms taken from one of them, interacts in surprising ways with periphrasis. Based on evidence from dialectal data from Gallo-Romance varieties, the paper aims to study the interaction between the two. The first four sections describe the patterns of overlapping suppletion found to occur between the verbs 'be', 'have' and 'go' in Gallo-Romance varieties. Some theoretical conclusions are drawn, which show that incursion is directional for good historical reasons, on which semantics plays an important role, in particular paradigmatically local synonymy (see Maiden 2014). By examining periphrastic forms, a distinction can be made between overlapping suppletion that only targets the stem, that which only targets a wordform (participle), and that which targets the whole inflectional cell. All three situations are shown to be possible. A number of splits within periphrasis in these varieties call for considering periphrastic tenses as part of the paradigm in their whole extensions, not only as far as their lexical part (here the participle) is concerned. The purpose of the article is to analyze the Ukrainian nominations due to the internal form of the word. The names of literary language and vernacular on the basis of ethnolinguistic phenomena – folk etymology and taboos are involved in the analysis. The relevence of the study is due to the need to clarify ethnolinguistic phenomena associated with ambivalent tendencies – the vivid imagery of the word and its concealment and reproduction in linguistic concepts. Research methods. In the article as the main general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis are used, as well as linguistic – descriptive, structural and comparative and historical methods. Conclusions. For ethnolinguistics the phenomenon of folk etymology is important, which testifies the desire of speakers to explain the name, illustrates the subconscious attempt of native speakers to poetize the word, to inspire the word with poetry. In folk speech etymology motivates primarily toponyms and nicknames of people. Under the influence of folk etymology the literary language and folk words change their sound composition. Ethnolinguistic character has such a phenomenon as taboo: the word "hides" the internal form. During the Christmas holidays the speakers of the Bukovinian dialects had a taboo on the pronunciation of the word poppy. Taboo was widely used in folk birth rites. Euphemisms are associated with the phenomenon of taboos. In vernacular the word “devil” has many “substitutes”. Periphrases are close to euphemisms. In literary language there are established periphrases which emphasize the feature of the concept.

The paper compares two texts: Hugo’s Hernani and Piave’s libretto Ernani, based on the former for Verdi’s music. The aim is to investigate what survives of the revolutionary aspects of the original text in the Italian language used in the libretto. Referring to his works and to Hernani as well, Hugo had claimed he had «set the language free» pushing the literary French towards the colloquial one. In spite of that, the libretto draws on the literary archaisms which characterized the coeval poetry ignoring Hugo’s innovations and testifying to the “delay” of the Italian language. In the first part, the paper compares Hugo’s direct expression and prosaic tension to the pretentious periphrasis and syntactic inversions of the Piave’s libretto. Attention is then paid to the level of the signifier, namely to the ludic use of rhymes and phonic iterations. The close reading of the libretto reveals its internal logic and poetic dignity. More than that, comparing Hugo’s virtuoso multi-layered style with the “hyperliterary” style of the libretto leads to reflect on the relationship between style and History. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the article the titles of Olga Kobylyanska's small prose through the prism of a cognitive- pragmatic aspect are described. As a first representative of a work the title is of great importance, because it carries encoded informa- tion, adjusts the reader to the theme, idea and rhyme of the work, creates a background for his perception. The relevance of the artic- le is determined by the need of further in-depth study of Olga Ko- bylyanskaya idiostyle in order to form a cognitive-pragmatic conc- eption of the writer's artistic discourse. The novelty of scientific exploration is conditioned by the fact that the titles of Olga Kobylyanska's works of small prose, written at the turn of the 19th - 20th centuries, have not yet been the subject of analysis. The purpose of the article is to analyze the titles – ordinary signs of Olga Kobylyanska's works. Research methods. In the article as the main general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis are used, as well as linguistic – method of linguistic observation, descriptive and structural methods. Conclusions. Among the names of Olga Kobylyanskaya's small prose works there are three types of titles: ordinary signs, complicated signs, figurative signs. Usually, the name of a work depends on the type of information presented in it, on the form in which the author wanted to express a particular opinion – explicitly or implicitly. Among the names of the works – the usual signs we highlight a group motivat- ed by the social origin of the main characters: "The Beggar", "The Aristocrat", "The Villein". Some titles of the works indicate the time and place of action, thus implementing the idea of chronotope: "In St. Ivan", "Time", "Bank rusticalnyi". We distinguish a series of works in which the titles indicate the object of lyric hero admira- ration: "Roses", "What I loved", "Poets".

The aim of this paper is twofold: firstly it provides a detailed overview of the canonical approach to inflection (following Corbett 2007; 2009; 2015); secondly it attempts to analyze, within this approach, a typologically interesting phenomenon of mixed perfective auxiliation systems attested in a wide array of Italo-Romance dialects. First, the paper introduces the key notions of Canonical Typology (cf. Bond 2019) applied to inflectional morphology, along with a proposed working Czech terminology of basic terms such as requirements of form etc. Second, the paper proceeds to show that mixed systems, where two auxiliary verbs (corresponding to the derivatives of the Latin verbs habere/ esse) alternate within one and the same paradigm, representing a further way in which periphrastic exponence “splits” the inflectional realization of a lexeme. These systems thus constitute yet another interesting non-canonical inflectional phenomenon worth exploring from the perspective of Canonical Typology

The author discusses the use of creative subversion in the English translation of the Chinese novelette "Shengsi Yu (Limbo)" by Hao Jingfang. The Chinese author is know for winning the Hugo Prize for Science Fiction Literature in 2016. She mentions her use of strategic amplification, omission and periphrasis in translating the novelette. She emphasizes the need to evaluate translated works based on their expansion and reconceptualization of the source text.

Antonomasia implies two opposing semantic mechanisms: the replacement of a proper name by an appellative, epithet or periphrasis (e. g. the Iron Lady standing for Margaret Thatcher), or the attribution of a proper name to an appellative or a set of certain personality traits (e. g. a Penelope standing for a faithful, devoted wife). The aim of this paper is to show that studying antonomasia as a figure of speech driven by a cognitive metonymic and metaphoric mechanism can contribute to revealing how women are conceptualised and consequently talked about. We do so by analysing figurative antonomasia in a dataset of 307 examples extracted from Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian (BCMS) webpages, although the findings are generisable to other languages as well. We show that antonomasia is frequently based on entrenched stereotypes about women and that in the collective consciousness of the BCMS speakers women are often conceptualised as (sexual) objects, typically valued by aesthetic criteria, as well as in relation to their possession of certain stereotypical female traits (self-sacrifice or subordination to others, excessive emotion but also cruelty, manipulativeness, showiness, talkativeness, etc.). In addition, the analysis also revealed that a woman is principally identified through her relations with other beings (as a mother, sister, wife or lover). Our study thus confirms that studying antonomasia within gender and language studies is a goal well worth pursuing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we survey some of the inflected and periphrastic volitional mood paradigms in South Slavic with a focus on Bulgarian data. Our review confirms typological observations in the literature that volitional mood paradigms tend to ‘fracture’, in that the cross-categorisation with different person/number features leads to systematic associations with different meanings and, typologically, frequent associations with different forms. This makes it difficult to argue that non-existent inflected forms are gaps in the inflected paradigm. Because of this periphrastic volitional mood forms that exist alongside inflected forms have to be seen as independent (syntactic) paradigms, rather than forms that fill missing cells in inflected paradigms, i.e. the product of feature intersection. Like more canonical periphrases, however, syntactic volitional mood forms are non-compositional and exhibit an organisation akin to the content-form paradigm organisation of inflected paradigms developed in certain inferential-realizational approaches to morphology. Following some recent formalisations, we suggest a tentative analysis of the most productive periphrastic volitional mood forms in Bulgarian based on the assumption that their properties are constrained partially by the morphology and partially in the syntax.

This paper provides a comprehensive and uniform description that accounts for the use of all the participial periphrastic constructions in Biblical Hebrew and calls into question the claim that a second ('preterite') function of the construction was developed in Late Biblical Hebrew. We define the syntagm and give criteria for distinguishing true participial periphrastic constructions from superficially similar constructions. We then show that close attention to situation aspect and (un)boundedess provides a unified and sound account of every occurrence of the syntagm in the Hebrew Bible. We conclude that, unless the situation is bounded by an adverbial phrase, every participial periphrastic construction is unbounded which semantically distinguishes the construction from wayyiqtol. This paper will revisit the frequent use of the periphrastic construction of a form of the verb ‮היה‬‎ + participle in the Temple Scroll (TS). As others have noted, TS preserves by far the largest number of cases of this construction in the Qumran corpus, and these cases overwhelmingly involve the yiqṭol of ‮היה‬‎. The use of the construction has also been given compositional weight, serving as a source-critical indicator in prominent theories of the diachronic development of TS. This essay provides a detailed analysis of how the periphrastic construction functions in TS, compares that function to the use of the construction in other Qumran texts, and asks what, if anything, the construction's distribution might be able to tell us about the processes by which the Temple Scroll was composed. The periphrastic past tense of Afrikaans, involving the auxiliary het, is compared with its ancestor construction in Dutch. I argue that the situation in Afrikaans provides support for the analysis of Germanic verb clusters in Zwart (2017), where periphrastic verb forms occupy cells in morphological paradigms, and enter the syntax only after the syntactic derivation has run its course.
