The paper presents the results of empirical research that examines the reception of the subject Philosophy with Children in the seventh and eighth grades of primary school. The research was conducted in two primary schools in Serbia. It was preceded by the creation of a Manual the scenarios of which, as a template for philosophical research, were formulated in accordance with a problembased approach to teaching philosophy. Some of the research results show that the stimuli that most deeply and permanently encourage reflection are not those close to the pupils, those aimed at their own, familiar, day-to-day experience, but the ones that, by using familiar concepts and situations in discussions, lead to an imaginable perspective of a possible experience (from the experience that is real, one’s own or other person’s, to the most abstract, normative experience). The skill of organising a philosophy class for children is closely related to the selection of representative stimuli that would enable the formulation of general questions in simpler terms and an articulate discussion of possible answers. Philosophy with children, as a philosophical reflection, should follow, as much as possible, a “dialectical” form, so that the initial question must be general enough to allow the formulation of the criteria for answers, as well as their analysis, revision, and modification. From the introduction of this school subject to its proper use within the framework of institutionalised practice, a lot of time still needs to pass and a lot of work has to be done – above all, teaching and organizational work – for Philosophy with Children to be accepted as a teaching “subject”, and even more so for the goals it advocates to be achieved.

Numerous studies have shown that a considerable number of students do not accept the theory of evolution, prompting the scientific community to seek ways to improve how lessons on evolution are designed in order to promote students' acceptance. A crucial factor identified in many studies is students' comprehension of the nature of science and their perceived conflict between religious beliefs and evolution. Our research aimed to investigate the effects of philosophical dialogues on evolution acceptance, with a specific focus on the relationship between religion and science. We conducted an intervention study in 21 high-school classes in Switzerland. Our findings suggest that high-quality philosophical dialogues can enhance students' acceptance of evolution by addressing the perceived conflict between it and religious beliefs. Conversely, low-quality dialogues may intensify the influence of religiosity, negatively affecting evolution acceptance. Our study underscores both the importance of applying philosophical methods skilfully and the potential benefits of incorporating philosophical dialogues into teaching practices. The incorporation of Care ethics into the field of pedagogical practices for citizenship education remains, at present, scarcely supported by empirical evidence. To address this gap, we propose a framework for analyzing the manifestations of ethical and civic dispositions at work among participants in a Philosophical Discussion that can be considered as pertaining to the practice of Care. This article presents the results of qualitative research that tests these dispositions against specific markers to show how they are specifically mobilized during a Philosophical Discussion. We will then discuss the conditions under which this framework can be considered an educational activity of Care, an implementation of care and solicitude that initiates the citizen of tomorrow into the actions and situations inherent to the ethical and political ideal of Care. This article presents a small-scale study that sought to explore in what ways Philosophy with Children (PwC) might support a classroom environment that is conducive to children's well-being. Following a series of Community of Philosophical Inquiry sessions with a class of nineteen Primary six children (ten- and eleven-year-olds) in a Scottish primary school, seven themes emerged as important when establishing a learning environment conducive to children's well-being: structure, participation, dynamics of interaction, emotional response, listening, confidence, and teachers' practice. These themes were identified through analysis of the teacher's and CoPI facilitator's observations during the sessions and the recorded dialogues following the sessions. In addition, the teacher was interviewed at the end of the intervention period. The results of the study also suggest that the notion of well-being with a focus on the individual may be overly narrow and that nurturing community allows children to recognise themselves as part of a wider whole, thereby enriching their well-being. Philosophy with Children is a highly dialogic form of teaching and facilitation plays an important part in ensuring dialogic quality. During the philosophical dialogue, the facilitator estimates from the participants' behaviour whether the dialogue is engaging, collaborative, and meaningful to the participants. However, little is known about facilitator assessment of participants' experiences and how this assessment correlates with participants' experiences of the learning environment. Our study examines five facilitators' experiences from 58 online philosophical dialogues for school children and compares facilitator perceptions with participant and observer experiences. The results indicate that children can experience synchronous online dialogues as meaningful, collaborative, and supportive, but that facilitators have a tendency to underestimate the positive experiences of the children. We suggest that such a discrepancy in the assessment of dialogue experience might stem from a "non-participant bias" in facilitators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Building a university outreach programme is a complex task that requires coordination of funding, regulations, research aims, practical activities and recruitment strategies. This article describes the building of an outreach programme based on the Philosophy with Children practice and the associated changes in the programme’s research focus, practical activities and organisation over the first five years. Where did the initial inspiration come from, what form did it take eventually, and what have we learned? The article outlines our strategies and activities and I argue that two shifts in focus made the programme stronger in terms of impact and research. First, instead of sending university students into classrooms, we turned to teacher training programmes. Second, conversations with teachers indicated that the most interesting research questions were not about cognitive gains but about learning environments, teacher roles, facilitation techniques and other topics from educational studies. The article also assesses the strategies and research from the first six years of the programme and how they have demonstrated both challenges and opportunities in Philosophy with Children.

This paper is an introduction to the dossier on "the present and the future of doing philosophy with children", which itself drew inspiration from a conference on the same topic that was held in University College Dublin on the 24th of June 2022. While the conference aimed at building a case for the importance of engaging pre-college students in philosophical thinking, it also aspired to function as a forum where the participants can critically reflect on the practice of doing philosophy with children. The participants were asked to reflect on 1) the ways in which philosophy prepares children to engage with an increasingly complex world; 2) the future challenges of the P4wC movement; 3) the ways in which and the extent to which P4wC practice contributes to the decolonization of childhood discourses; 4) the ways in which and the extent to which the philosophy with children initiative addresses issues of epistemic injustice and educational and social inequalities. Building on the discussions that took place during and after the conference, the authors in this dossier interrogate the hierarchical opposition between child and adult, and cast a critical gaze on adultist assumptions that prevent Philosophy for/with Children initiatives from achieving their full potential. This paper is the result of reflections inspired by observing and participating in dancing sessions with children. Our experience of the latter led to the production of images that provoked a variety of questions, and invited us to think about the relationships between bodies, dance, and various forms of education. Among these questions were: what clues about the experience of human embodiment are given through observing children's dance? What can children teach us through participating with them in this performative medium, and what are its implications for education, most especially in light of our observations of children's inventiveness in this regard? Our impressions resonate and find expression in the oeuvre of Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, Michel Foucault, Jan Masschelein and Manoel de Barros. Placing ourselves under their influence, we mobilized our thinking and opened ourselves to the emergent character of their ideas, resulting in what might be called a form of "dancing-writing" in which those two forms of expression interact. This dancing-writing is informed by and imbued with children's lived experience: step by step, we walked the paths that they opened, recording as best we could their multisensorial approach to the world--gaze, taste, smell, sound, touch, movement. Ours was an experience of research on movement, with movement, in movement. As such, we harbor no intention to present final answers, but rather offer the reader an invitation to think philosophically and childishly. We present results from a single case study based on semi-structured interviews with a student (a boy in school year 3) diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and his school staff after participating in a short and small-scale intervention carried out in a socio-economically disadvantaged Swedish elementary school in 2019. The student participated in a seven week long intervention with a total of 12 philosophical dialogues (ranging from 45 to 60 minutes). Two facilitators, both with years of facilitation experience and teacher degree and at least BA in philosophy, facilitated the majority of the dialogues and mainly followed a "routine" procedure. The student was interviewed in direct connection to the end of the intervention about his experiences from the dialogues and his perceptions about whether and how the dialogues had influenced him. The student's two teachers, who had participated in the dialogues as participants, were interviewed as a pair, also in direct connection to the end of the intervention, while the school principal was interviewed two years after the study. These staff interviews concerned the staff's experiences of the influence of the dialogues on the students within the intervention as well as transfer effects to other contexts in school. The data from the study include detailed elaborations from a student perspective of different effects on the student's communicative and cognitive development, which are in several respects supported also by staff reports. The results show that the student was able, interested, and willing to participate in philosophical dialogues, and our data point to several positive outcomes for the student in the communicative and cognitive domains. This article considers children's status in society and how this may be elevated with a view to imagining a possible future. Children's status is such that the structures and systems under which they live diminish their agency. In so doing, their opportunity to contribute to the shaping of what appears to be an uncertain future is limited. The article proposes that looking towards children as saviours of our tomorrows is misguided and that a healthier view is to recognise the networked nature of children, which recognises children's humanity and sees them as connected to the world in which and of which they are a part. By accepting the networked nature of children, adults may come to think and behave differently towards children, beginning to see themselves and children as 'one among many'. This perspective allows for compassion, a notion that supports our living together. This article proposes that Philosophy with Children may offer an approach to engaging in community and dialogue that allows us to think our way to a future that is epistemically inclusive. Ultimately, engaging with children as potential knowers demands that we are more overtly political in the ways in which we engage with Philosophy with Children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Adventures of Pinocchio is one of those few stories that has not only stood the test of time, but has become part of the culture and, 139 years later, continues to be recreated in literary, cinematographic, theatrical, plastic and even pedagogical versions. In this article we try to address some of the silences that Disney imposed on an important part of the story, leaving out, for example, the issue of poverty. Today we ask ourselves if a cultural product such as The Adventures of Pinocchio can trigger conversations and reflections with today's children, and if the school can appropriate this material to philosophize with students and even with adults. Why in a world of evildoers who steal, cheat, cook, sell or hang children, is the reproachful gaze fixed on a child who tells lies? What experiences does a child have to go through to see himself as "bad"? What are the risks of classification, on the other hand, so necessary in knowledge? Although we start from an experience carried out in a school in Mexico City, the analysis presented here is mainly concerned with the link between reading(s) and philosophical reflection in this story. This study examines the effects of teaching philosophy for children (P4C) on the development of non-cognitive skills among students. Although the main focus of modern schooling is on attainment, non-cognitive skills and attitudes are still within the scope of modern education. The Ministry of Education in Saudi Arabia introduced a new policy to teach critical thinking and philosophy in its public schools in 2017. Although the effects of teaching philosophy on cognitive skills have been well-researched, fewer studies have studied the effects the teaching philosophy has on non-cognitive skills. The current study is the first to explore this issue in the Saudi educational context. This paper presents findings from a quasi-experiential design using 28 students in a Saudi elementary public school. An experimental group of sixth-graders participated in Philosophy for Children (P4C) sessions for 3 months, while the other group of sixth-graders did not receive any philosophy-related training. To collect data, the researchers used a survey designed for non-cognitive outcomes. The results show that the P4C group ranked higher in measures of communication, sociability, self-confidence, determination, willingness to try new things, happiness, and solving problems. On the other hand, the results show that the P4C group lagged behind in terms of empathy, democracy, and diversity compared to the experimental group. However, the differences are minor, and the sample is small. Nonetheless, the results are promising in indicating that P4C can improve students' non-cognitive skills. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article is an exploration of a democratic school where the author spent several years researching and engaging with teachers and students while investigating the practice of Philosophy for/with Children (P4C) within Irish Educate Together schools. I offer an account of how teachers in these contexts seek to reconcile and harmonise their P4C practice with their own educational and democratic outlooks. These perspectives were uncovered through a 'lived enquiry' study involving deep immersion in the day‐to‐day life of a school as a researcher and P4C practitioner. Teachers seeking to reconcile their practice with their views in this context resulted in the children in their classrooms learning through democratic processes, where democracy is not merely prescribed, but instead becomes a way of life. By drawing upon excerpts of teacher interview data from my doctoral studies, I suggest that there is a 'rough ground' of practice where diverse and unique perspectives can be revealed when lived, deeply immersive and sensitive approaches are taken towards practitioners and their communities. The intertwining of Educate Together and P4C philosophies of education is explored, with particular emphasis on the notion of child‐centredness, dialogue and philosophical enquiry with children. Expanding on the democratic educational ideas of Biesta and Fielding, I argue that there is a deeply contextual and philosophically compelling connection between teachers engaging in P4C, the atmosphere or environment in which dialogue with children can occur and a different understanding of democracy through education that may result. This paper discusses child-centred education in the frame of philosophy with children’s principles by approaching traditional theories about thought and language development in early childhood from a critical perspective. Firstly, the article suggests reframing the developmental stages of the child’s mind functions of Piaget regarding Vygotsky’s sociocultural approaches. In the following phases, alternative educational understandings are discussed according to brand-new works of contemporary philosophers like Bjorklund and Burman by touching upon individualism and individual differences of children in order to inquiry the effects of child-individuality in the creation of a new pedagogy. Philosophy for/with children methodology carries potentials in the ways of rethinking of early childhood period when individualism and socialization proceed simultaneously. In the pursuit of this linkage, this paper lastly underlines the possibilities of a new pedagogy around “a right to philosophy” by illustrating several practical experiences of a community of inquiry in the early childhood process. The purpose of this evaluative case study was to examine preschool teachers' views on the Philosophy with Children approach and its use in early childhood education through the Philosophy with Children experience. In this study, 11 preschool teachers participated in Philosophy with Children sessions for ten weeks, and then later attempted to implement the PwC approach in their educational environment at least twice. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, basically before and after the 10-week PwC session as well as after the practices implemented by preschool teachers in their educational setting. In addition, during the 10-week PwC session, observations were conducted and audio recordings of all the procedures and field notes were collected. According to the study findings, the preschool teachers claimed the PwC approach could be used in early childhood education and positively affect children. Preschool teachers reported that the PwC approach led them to look critically at the relationship between the teacher and child in traditional education, understanding of guidance, and classroom management. On the other hand, this study revealed that preschool teachers reported handicaps related to self-confidence while using PwC and motivation to use PwC. They claimed some aspects of the traditional educational structure may hinder using the PwC approach. In conclusion, it was recommended that future research and in-service or pre-service education programs with preschool teachers be organized with more comprehensive content, including the philosophical dimension of the PwC approach. Situated in the context of the Scottish Religious and Moral Education (RME) curriculum, this article considers the practice of Community of Philosophical Inquiry (CoPI) and how it supports the RME curriculum. Sharing extracts from children's CoPI sessions, the article reflects on the ways in which ten and eleven year-old children discuss religious and theological ideas philosophically. The child-led, collaborative approach demonstrates that the children work together to create meaning. It is proposed that the RME curriculum, or the enactment of the curriculum, often misses opportunities for children to engage with philosophical ideas about religious and theological concepts, and that an explicitly dialogic, philosophical approach affords important opportunities to support children's self-understanding in-relation with the world and others. Clarifying the concept of emotions is an essential task of 21st century societies. We cannot continue living if we ignore the importance they have in our everyday thinking and acting. Emotions are fundamental both to the private and the public sphere It is becoming increasingly important to learn to identify what we feel and what those around us feel, how we express these feelings and understand their consequences, in order to enable us to transform harmful emotions into others more favorable to the well-being of our personal relationships and our relationship with the environment. With this objective in mind, my text proposes a form of emotional education in the framework of peace education, initiated in early childhood, which acts to develop the emotional capacity required for the realization of a form of critical, ethical and creative global citizenship. This work recovers the methodology of the school of philosophy with children, which gives a great sense of philosophical praxis to the text, by putting it in dialogue, also, with studies in philosophy for peace. Thus, it is essential to vindicate empathy and moral imagination from the time we are children. Through thinking based on care, fthe cultivation of an emotional education will stimulate to wonder about other emotional alternatives, escaping from our own limits and exploring the perspectives of others until we come to merge with their horizons. During 2018 we started with two programs in Knin. One was a philosophy program with children as part of the project “Reading for Children” and another program of the “Philosophical cafe”. Both projects were funded from the state budget, the Ministry of Culture and the City of Knin. In the program of philosophy with children, we had the intention, in accordance with the program of the funded projects, to encourage reading practice among the youngest age groups. Therefore, we have directed the method of philosophy with children in the direction of promoting reading using methods of developing critical and creative thinking. All workshops included talking with children about philosophical topics such as time, freedom, friendship, love, knowledge, existence, space, life, etc. The “Philosophical café” was organized with the support of a café A3, the National Library and the NGO Atribut. Financially we were also supported by NP Krka. It is held once a month where citizens can freely express their views on the topic.

This study aims at providing a detailed description of the ways to understand the development process of a primary school teacher on philosophy with children (PwC) approach. Action research was used as the research method since the problems determined in the current study can be iteratively solved with the development of the teacher. The study group consists of a teacher in a primary school located at the center of Bayburt, Turkey in the 2018-2019 academic year and 20 third-grade students. Qualitative data collection methods; observation, interview, field notes and diaries were used. A systematic analytical method was applied and the data were analyzed using a content analysis approach. The primary school teacher was provided with training on the PwC approach and eight action cycles were conducted regarding the implementation of this approach. Observations and interviews conducted in this process indicated that there are developments in the teacher in implementing the PwC approach and these developments positively affect some skills of the students. We understand that the practice of Philosophy with Children within the school, proposed by Walter Kohan, invites practitioners to think about themselves and, in that reflective act, to know what they are - and what they are being -, what they want and do not want to be, giving themselves the possibility of self-transformation. In order to transform ourselves, says this philosopher, it is necessary to abandon the devices that lead us to be what we are. But, what are we? What are we as teachers? What are we as students? What devices lead us to be what we are? To think about these questions we analyze, with Michel Foucault, the school, an institution where the practice of Philosophy with Children takes place, in order to understand the power relations that exist in this space. We will understand how this power relations shape and define what it is to be a teacher and to be a student. To do this, we start with an introduction to Foucault's thought, analyzing what is power, pastoral power, disciplinary power and resistance that, according to the French philosopher, shapes school as an educational locus. Likewise, we will present the Philosophy with Children proposal and expose the possibility and need, stated by Kohan, for philosophy (as an exercise within the school) to reflect on the coercive practices of power experienced in the classroom and, from there, to create and openness to other forms of relationship between those who inhabit it. Finally, we argue that the practice of Philosophy with Children constitutes, in Foucault's terms, a practice of resistance within schools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents the theoretical construction of the relationship between mathematics learning and philosophy for/with children. The selection of a documentary corpus allowed delimiting the object of study. Then, thematic and analytical cards were elaborated to interpret the main statements, in which divergences and convergences between philosophy for/with children and the learning of mathematics were evidenced. The text is organized in six sections: Mathematical thinking as experience; Philosophy for/with children: a space for thinking; Reasoning, argumentation and logical thinking: a matter of philosophy for/with children and mathematics; the role of the question in mathematical thinking; the community of inquiry: a matter of mathematics; and, finally, from concept to mathematical thinking. The article gives an account of the reflection on the need to link the learning of mathematics with the exercise of philosophizing in order to democratize mathematics. This leads to the formation of critical, creative and ethical thinking, fundamental in the learning processes of mathematics, which becomes a pedagogical experience and a didactic bet from critical mathematics education. In conclusion, the interaction between these two disciplines transforms pedagogical practices and school contexts. The classroom becomes a space for inquiry, wonder, creation, reasoning, modeling, argumentation, training and individual and collective transformation. The learning of mathematics encompasses the need to emancipate the subjects in order to solve social injustices from the contexts, to promulgate equality and democracy through the learning of mathematics. Education as identity formation in Western-style liberal-democracies relies, in part, on neutrality as a justification for the reproduction of collective individual identity, including societal, cultural, institutional and political identities, many aspects of which are problematic in terms of the reproduction of environmentally harmful attitudes, beliefs and actions. Taking a position on an issue necessitates letting go of certain forms of neutrality, as does effectively teaching environmental education. We contend that to claim a stance of neutrality is to claim a position beyond criticism. In the classroom this can also be an epistemically damaging position to hold. To further explore the problem of neutrality in the classroom, and to offer a potential solution, we will look to the philosophical community of inquiry pedagogy, and advocate for the addition of place-based education; a form of experiential education that promotes learning in local communities in which the school is situated, each with its own history, culture, economy and environment. However, how we understand 'place' is fundamental to understanding the potential of place-based education in giving students a 'sense of place'-how they perceive a place, which includes place attachment and place meaning. To this end, we look to Indigenous understandings of Place and social reconstruction learning to inform place-based pedagogies. Doing so, we hold, opens a pathway to ethical education. Philosophy with children officially begins with Matthew Lipman who initiated it in the 1970s. He was prompted to do so by the fact that his students struggled with critical thinking. This encouraged him to establish the Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children at Montclair State University. Even though the movement has faced some criticism, it continues to spread around the world. The reason for this are the methods used, i.e. stories, games, conversations, questions, etc., as well as the topics analysed. Philosophy with children addresses numerous topics, while this paper will focus on human rights, more specifically, what human rights are, what the most important human rights are, and how they might be violated. In order to make this subject matter more accessible to children, at the end of the paper, an overview of two workshops is given, which may be applied to the subject of human rights in practicing philosophy with children. Summary: This article explores a unique project that introduced a 10-week programme of practical Philosophy with Children to young people living in secure accommodation. It aimed to gauge the extent to which young people in secure accommodation were able to engage in philosophical dialogue and to explore the challenges and opportunities in introducing practical philosophy to young people in secure accommodation. Transcripts of 10 philosophical dialogues were analysed and young people and staff working with them were also interviewed. Findings: Following 10 weeks of Community of Philosophical Inquiry sessions, it was evident that the young people were not only able to engage in philosophical dialogue, but also they responded positively to the structures of the sessions. While it may seem counter-intuitive to teach young people to argue, the structures offered by Community of Philosophical Inquiry appear to have been positive in terms of providing young people with the freedom to express their ideas, engage collaboratively with one another, and self-regulate their behaviour. Applications: Although secure accommodation can be described as a controlling environment, the model adopted in this study suggests that some forms of control, such as those offered in the practical philosophy sessions, may be liberating for young people in these contexts. This study offers those working with young people in secure accommodation a new perspective on young people's thinking and a new approach for supporting young people in their care and as they transition to the wider world. Much has been written in recent years about research methods used when conducting research with and about children, with many approaches taking cognizance of the children's rights agenda. This article proposes adopting a philosophical approach, through Community of Philosophical Inquiry (CoPI), as a research method that pays attention to children's rights. In so advocating, the argument presented is that CoPI makes explicit children's conceptual understanding and that this complements other research methods. CoPI allows for authentic voice and 'conceptual autonomy' through the shared meaning-making in philosophical dialogue by recognizing children's capacities as thinkers in their own right. The ‘Marwa’ elementary school (pseudonym) – an Israeli public school on the border between Israel and the Palestinian Authority – is a unique educational institution in that, despite being not religious, it only accepts from Grade 1 through to Grade 6 girls. Several years ago, the principal decided to implement a Philosophy with Children (PwC) programme as an alternative pedagogy. This paper surveys how the educational faculty regarded the introduction of this curriculum and how it contributed towards the development of philosophical discursive skills, a classroom atmosphere of friendship and caring, and critical and creative thinking competence amongst the students.

It is said that it takes a village to raise a child. It may also be said that it takes the unexplored wilderness to raise a philosopher. In this text I begin with Henry David Thoreau's trope of going out into the wilderness to "witness our own limits transgressed" as an expression of a cosmopolitan philosophical exercise. This article is an attempt to bear witness to the transgressions of communal village life in the philosophical expressions of children. The sketch of those expressions leads to a depiction of philosophical life in early childhood education where, whatever pedagogical outlook or methods they may use, teachers will depend on a pedagogy of immediacy, of living with the child in the moment of awakening that is the child's philosophical experience.
