This work reports the first observation of azimuthal asymmetries around the thrust axis in e(+)e(-) annihilation of pairs of back-to-back charged pions in one hemisphere, and pi(0) and eta mesons in the opposite hemisphere. These results are complemented by a new analysis of pairs of back-to-back charged pions. The pi(0) and eta asymmetries rise with the relative momentum z of the detected hadrons as well as with the transverse momentum with respect to the thrust axis. These asymmetries are sensitive to the Collins fragmentation function H-1(perpendicular to) and provide complementary information to previous measurements with charged pions and kaons in the final state. In particular, the eta final states will provide additional information on the flavor structure of H-1(perpendicular to). This is the first measurement of the explicit transverse-momentum dependence of the Collins fragmentation function from Belle data. It uses a dataset of 980.4 fb(-1) collected by the Belle experiment at or near a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV.

In the challenging aim to achieve polarized antiproton, the PAX collaboration performed dedicated measurements of the spin-dependent polarizing cross section for p-p scattering at COSY. The result, under a very nice control of the process, agrees with the theoretical previsions, and confirms the pursuability of the spin-filtering for polarizing antiprotons.

Measurements of the production of forward high-energy pi(0) mesons from transversely polarized proton collisions at root200 GeV are reported. The cross section is generally consistent with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The analyzing power is small at x(F) below about 0.3, and becomes positive and large at higher x(F), similar to the trend in data at roots less than or equal to20 GeV. The analyzing power is in qualitative agreement with perturbative QCD model expectations. This is the first significant spin result seen for particles produced with p(T)>1 GeV/c at a polarized proton collider.

A double-scattering experiment of antiprotons on carbon has been carried out at the Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN, to measure the polarization parameter A p C in antiproton-carbon elastic scattering at small angles. The polarization parameter has been inferred from the azimuthal distribution of the antiprotons after the second scattering. Data have also been collected with a liquid-hydrogen target as the second scatterer, thus allowing the sign of A p C to be determined. The experiment has been performed at two momenta of the extracted antiproton beam, 800 and 1100 MeV/c. A small positive value of the polarization has been observed, compatible with energy independence and a linear increase with the momentum transfer q. Parametrizing A p C as acq, we get ac = +0.72 0.10+0.09(GeV/c)−1. This result is compared with potential model predictions for NN amplitudes through a Glauber theory calculation.
