This text analyses the socio-environmental conflict in the village of Pirgua. At the same time, the research defines the causes that give rise to it, and proposes a public policy that allows establishing a model for how to take on the great social and environmental challenges. The analysis of the research is given by the characterisation of a social phenomenon (conflict) by means of the three-stage methodological model; analysis of the conflict, legitimacy of action and the actors within the conflict and, finally, the conflict within a central conflict (Fontaine, 2004). The investigation found that there exists a concentration of negative environmental burdens that are generating opposing relationships between the community that inhabits the village versus the institutions and private companies that manage the burdens. This tension is mainly caused by inadequate territorial planning and ignorance of the approaches that recognise human rights within the notion of development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GOLD mining , *AGRICULTURE , *LITERATURE reviews , *POLLUTION , *RURAL health , *ACADEMIC discourse , *SMALL-scale fisheries - Abstract
People making a living in rural Antioquia, Colombia, find themselves in a double bind: they require a healthy environment to farm and grow food, but many turn to artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) to supplement their incomes. The significant environmental harms associated with ASGM – from mercury and other heavy-metal contamination to deforestation and habitat loss – have led to both academic and popular discourse treating ASGM as an environmental problem to be understood and remedied scientifically. Our research in the small town of Andes (Antioquia region in Colombia) investigated how local residents themselves understood "pollution." Drawing on a literature review, archival research, site visits, and interviews with experts and local residents, we show that rural people understood pollution as emergent from complex webs of relationships and longer histories of government neglect. Exploring how people made sense of harm and expressed care builds on research in STS that demonstrates both the potentials and pitfalls for scientific concepts and tools to understand and intervene in compromised environments. This work aims to raise awareness about the harm caused by plastics dumped in the sea and provide information about the medical management of Pacific green turtle specimens under human care when they require attention. A case is presented of an adult female specimen of Chelonia mydas rescued in the city of Constitución, Chile, 200 km southwest of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (CRFS) at Parque Safari. The specimen shows symptoms of impaction syndrome with caudal flotation due to the accumulation of gases characteristic of paralytic ileus, and it also has lacerative injuries on the left anterior limb fin. It was decided to follow a diagnostic route with a clinical examination and complementary methods such as X-rays, ultrasounds, and blood analysis, in addition to a surgical procedure to expedite wound recovery. After three months of rehabilitation, the specimen was successfully reintroduced into Chascos Bay, Caldera, located 800 km north of the CRFS. During the rehabilitation of this specimen, it traveled approximately 1000 km across Chile's routes from its rescue to its reintroduction, with contributions from both the public and private sectors to manage the process. Changes in the dynamics of land use and land cover may significantly alter ecosystem models and processes, leading to changes in the delivery of their ecosystem services. In the Amazon, among the areas most affected by these changes are the forested watersheds, which involve a huge variety of ecosystem services that support human and animal well-being. Given the above, this study aims to analyse the dynamics of deforestation and changes in land use and land cover classes in the Marapanim River watershed, located in the northeast of Pará, to identify the possible consequences in the provision of ecosystem services. The methodology used in this study consists of quantifying and mapping deforestation and land use change using PRODES and MapBiomas data, identifying their impacts through estimates of loss of water-related ecosystem services and analysing the consequences of this process. The results revealed that the accumulated deforestation in the Marapanim River watershed between the years 1988 and 2019 was 1,614.72 km², about 74.84% of its area, resulting from forest conversion for pasture and urban areas in the most cases. In addition, it is concluded that this situation has had effects on water-related ecosystem services, especially regards to regulating services, affecting forest and soil moisture, evapotranspiration, carbon sequestration and temperature increase. Finally, it was found that human occupation close to head watershed areas has contributed to the pollution of its rivers, by preventing their use for human consumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CARBON monoxide , *CARBON monoxide detectors , *SCHEDULING - Abstract
The research on carbon monoxide (CO) concentration was carried out in three avenues of the District of Mariano Melgar in 2019. The objectives were: a) To quantify the concentration of carbon monoxide in the months of July, August and September in three avenues (Mariscal Castilla Avenue, Argentina Avenue and Peru Avenue) during the hours (06:00 to 08:00 h and 17:00 to 19:00 h) and b) To compare the concentration of carbon monoxide. The in situ measurement method has been used through the use of CO sensor, in different avenues, blocks, months, sampling schedule and the elaboration of maps of vehicle rearrangement. The results were as follows: There is a higher concentration of CO on Avenida Mariscal Castilla with 2.33 mg/m³ of CO and the lowest concentration was recorded on Avenida Argentina with 0.37 mg/m³ of CO. The highest concentration was recorded in July with 1.69 mg/m³ and the afternoon hours recorded higher concentrations with 1.59 mg/m³ of CO. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Considering the importance of knowledge of the population's perception as the first line of understanding of environmental quality, this study aimed to investigate the environmental perception of residents of the city of Caicó, RN, in addition to the health characteristics of the population and their socioeconomic context as descriptors of environmental quality. Thus, the analysis was carried out through the application of a semi-structured questionnaire, approved by the Research Ethics Committee, covering characteristics related to the conceptions and conditions related to the environmental scenario of human development, social habits along with health characteristics. A total of 140 interviews were conducted in 7 neighborhoods in the city describing the reality of approximately 600 residents. Significant differences in socioeconomic conditions were found in the profile of responses obtained. One of the most salient aspects was the polarization of environmental sanitation, compromising the quality of water resources and describing this as one of the most relevant factors that can affect the population's health. The level of environmental satisfaction was differentiated according to the origin (neighborhood or socioeconomic status classification) of the interviewees (p<0.01). However, the level of environmental perception was closely related to the degree of interaction between the population and the environment as one of the causes that influenced the approach and resolution of environmental concerns (p<0.01). In this way, this study described the interaction of society with the environmental context of local development and its role as a subsidy for the implementation of public policies aimed at preserving environmental quality and minimizing health impacts. The implementation and strengthening of environmental education activities would contribute to the population's awareness and sensitization in this regard. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RISK assessment , *CHILDREN'S health , *POLLUTION , *PSYCHOLOGICAL vulnerability - Abstract
Humanitarian crises can occur in places affected by chemical, physical, biological, and social threats, especially when these threats interact with each other and cause a syndemic. In order to avoid crises in these places, it is necessary to introduce mitigation measures that we have framed as "humanitarian scenarios". Due to their nature, implementation of these interventions requires the creation of multidisciplinary operational groups with a work strategy that integrates them into the affected community. In the case of the child population, the operational group was called the 'childhood risks in contaminated places' (CRCP) unit; contaminated places meaning localities impacted by chemical, physical, or biological threats. The strategy has six phases: (i) planning the survey and site visit; (ii) community involvement in identifying threats, vulnerabilities, and routes of exposure (the path of pollutants from their source to the receiving population), and in preparing joint work for the subsequent phases; iii) prioritization of risks identified through environmental monitoring and use of biomarkers of exposure and effects; iv) risk prevention through the creation of various 'capacities and alternatives for the prevention of syndemic threats'; (v) advocacy to implement these capacities and alternatives through risk communication and local training; and (vi) protection through measures that include telehealth, social progress, and innovation to improve health coverage. The strategy has been implemented in different contexts, and in some of them it has been enriched by analysis of respect for human rights. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Water resources are essential for life on earth. It has already been proven that although it is a resource renewable, water is a limited natural resource. Countries like Brazil, Angola and the United States of America, despite being on different continents and having economic development indices very different, are privileged in this regard, and that is why they were chosen to be objects of this search. But the lack of preservation of this natural resource in all of them, combined with poor water distribution, triggered important warnings in these nations. Consequently, it was necessary to implement regulation for water protection and its correct distribution. From this delimitation, the object of this article is to investigate the main foundations and instruments existing in the Water Laws edited in the Brazil, Angola and the United States. With the use of the deductive method and from research bibliographical and legislative of each of the countries, it is concluded by the need of adequate use of the water resources from the principle of sustainability and the constitutional principles governing the environmental and urban policy, as it is a limited and fundamental resource for the survival of humanity. SOLID phase extraction , *WATER pollution , *AGRICULTURE , *GAS chromatography , *GAS well drilling - Abstract
In the agricultural areas near the Carrizal River (Ecuador), various plant species are cultivated and pesticides are applied indiscriminately, causing imminent water contamination. The objective was to determine the concentration of organophosphorus pesticides in the Carrizal River. The detection and quantification of nine pesticides was carried out by solid-phase extraction and gas chromatography. Fifteen surface water samples were taken at five points in agricultural areas in three months. To find out about the knowledge and technological threat from the use of pesticides, an interview was conducted with local residents. The analyses determined the presence of the pesticides phorate and famphur, depending on the locality and month of sampling, but they did not exceed the maximum permissible limits of Ecuador's environmental regulations for water intended for human consumption and domestic use (0.1 µg/ml); the limits of quantification and detection for phorate were 0.004 and 0.001 µg/ml, while for famphur they were 0.011 and 0.004 µg/ml, respectively. The interview showed little knowledge about the threat posed by the use of these compounds in agricultural activities, which merits further research of this nature, both in the environmental and socio-cultural context. RAINWATER , *WATER harvesting , *WATER quality , *RURAL geography , *FIBER cement , *ORNAMENTAL trees , *ORNAMENTAL plants - Abstract
Rainwater can be harvested from different roofs of rural buildings, which can be stored for multipurpose depending on its quality. This technical note describes rainwater quality collected directly from the atmosphere and after passing through four types of roofs that are: French ceramic (roof1/Agronomy school building), fiber cement (roof2/farm machinery shed), or French ceramic (roof3/sheep housing), and French ceramic (roof4-swine housing) located inside Agroveterinary School Campus (CAV/UDESC) in Lages, Santa Catarina state, Brazil. The parameters analyzed were pH, color, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, total coliforms, and thermotolerant coliforms. Results showed that pH "in natura" rainwater was variable and below 7.0 with an average of 6.02. However, after passing through the roof, there was an increase in the pH (average) to 6.34 (roof1), 6.90 (roof2), 7.14 (roof3) and 6.50 (roof4). The rainwater also presented variations in the parameters of turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and coliforms after passing through roofs. Thus, the rainwater can potentially be used for non-potable purposes, being then advised of their use without treatment for cleaning of nearby environments of these rural buildings, as well as the irrigation of trees and ornamental plants, among others. TOTAL suspended solids , *SUSPENDED solids , *WATERSHEDS , *TURBIDITY , *WATER quality , *POLLUTION - Abstract
Rivers are natural environments that collect water from basins and transport it in laminar flow to the sea. Gradual changes occur due to the erosion of the walls and the bottom of rivers and the deposition of solids that the current carries. In the Usumacinta River basin, there is a sinusoidal correlation between liquid and solid flow. The term solid flow refers to the amount of sediment in motion, gaining its name from the product between liquid flow and the concentration of suspended solids. 21 simple samples of surface water were taken from June to December 2017, in the municipalities of Tenosique, Emiliano Zapata and Jonuta, in the state of Tabasco, Mexico. The concentrations of total suspended solids exceed the maximum permissible limits of the NOM-001-SEMARNAT-1996 (Mexico), for urban public use. Moreover, according to CE-CCA-001/89 (Ecological Water Quality Criteria in Mexico), the surface water of the lower basin of the Usumacinta River is classified as polluted. • This work brings results of the concentrations of total suspended solids of the surface water of the Usumacinta River. • The correlation between liquid flow and suspended solids and its effect on surface water quality was determined. • The relationship between the concentrations of total suspended solids and the climatic season is discussed. • The effects of high concentrations of total suspended solids on aquatic life and human health are discussed. carrot and turnip Plants showed fresh and dry weights similar when grown in the area next to the industry. However, plants of two species, cultivated in the fifty and three hundred feet away from the polluting source, showed reduced growth and consequently reduction of fresh and dry weights. Plant growth of carrot and turnip, measured by weight fresh, proved to be different between the dots next to the industry and to the control station to ten kilometers. Growth increased with the distance, and as a result due to the topography, with the altitude of the place of cultivation of plants. The dry weight showed large variations in all species and between seasons. There has been a reduction of 87.4 between dry weight of the plants growing in season 2 with the control. The time factor also exerted influence on the effect of industrial emission on the growth and development of plants. The species growing in season 1, at the same industry-level, and 2 station, located 122 m above the level of the industry, however, in the prevailing wind direction, showed greater reduction in growth, based on fresh and dry weights. Weather conditions such as wind speed and direction and stagnant area, associated with the topographical conformation, can increase the effects of toxic agents in the atmosphere over the plant ecosystem. The region where the textile industry lies presents conditions that favor the pollute effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOLID waste , *BEACHES , *COMPARATIVE studies , *COLLECTIONS , *AWARENESS , *POLLUTION - Abstract
The present study proposes a new method for quantification of solid waste deposition in coastal environment. To this end, we compared (l) the usual method of manual collection and (2) the proposed method based on photographic sampling of solid waste deposited. The collections were made at Guanabara beach, located on Ilha do Governador, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. The comparative study showed no statistically significant difference between the two sampling methodologies in relation to the quantification of solid waste. The total amounts of solid waste found through manual collection (n=143) and photographic sampling (n= 118) were statistically compared and showed no significant difference. The results obtained show a series of relative advantages regarding the proposed method: (1) dispenses the collection of the residues, avoiding the exposure to contaminating and cutting products, (2) reduced in approximately 3 times the working time in the field and in the laboratory, (3) dispenses the concern with space for storage, weight and transport of the residues. Thus, photographic sampling becomes a practical, efficient, and easily accessible tool to be used in works of this nature. We hope that this methodology will increase the number of studies, stimulating new works in the area, also acting as a tool for social awareness on the subject. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
According to the list of companies accredited for carbon accreditation by INMETRO, one can observe the lack of institutions in the Rio de Janeiro market that are qualified for the verification of inventories and mitigation plans of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) in the state of Rio de Janeiro, in this sense, there is a gap in this market that is potentially promising. According to INEA (2012) Resolutions No. 64 and 65, in industry and landfills there is a need to conduct annual inventories. Therefore, the objective of this article was to conduct an inventory of atmospheric emissions in the deactivated dump of Baía Formosa, in the city of Cabo Frio, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Quantitative and qualitative research methods were used for the characterization of GHGs from the inactivated dumpsite of the city of Cabo Frio and atmospheric air samples were collected for analysis using the gas chromatography method; Geographic Information System (GIS) was used in the elaboration of maps for the characterization of the land area of the dump; and the GHG inventory was performed with the GHG Protocol program. It was observed that the concentrations of CO2, CH4 and N2O are close to the world averages. The results indicate that the current condition of the inactivated dumpsite generates GHG production when compared to the sanitary landfill of Seropédica (RJ). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction. At present, environmental management has become one of the main axes for the different areas of the company. Environmental management in synergy with social responsibility are key factors in causing the least impact of activities on the environment, this last factor being the one that ensures compliance with the rules and policies established by the competent authorities. Objective. Determine the level of relationship between environmental management and social responsibility of the company dedicated to the tile and brick industry in the San Jerónimo district, Cusco. Materials and Methods. The information obtained was collected through surveys of a sample of 102 tiles and bricks manufacturers from the district of San Jerónimo, Cusco. Spearman's correlation statistic and factor analysis with a significance level of 95 % were used for data analysis. Results. With the application of the method, the level of relationship between environmental management and social responsibility was obtained through the Spearman correlation, being 1.6 % with p = 0.156> 0.05. Conclusions. It was determined that environmental management does not have a significant level of relationship with social responsibility in the tile and brick sector of the San Jerónimo district, Cusco. Likewise, for environmental management, it was identified that the planning factor is the most important and for social responsibility, voluntary responsibilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
