This paper establishes dialogs between theories on the popular and critical studies on algorithms and datafication. In doing so, it contributes to reversing the analytical tendency to assume that algorithms have universal effects and that conclusions about "algorithmic power" in the Global North apply unproblematically everywhere else. We begin by clarifying how Latin American scholars and other research traditions have theorized the popular ("lo popular"). We then develop four dimensions of lo popular to implement these ideas in the case of algorithms: playful cultural practices, imagination, resistance, and "in-betweenness." We argue that this dialogue can generate different ways of thinking about the problems inherent to algorithmic mediation by drawing attention to the remixes of cultural practices, imaginative solutions to everyday problems, "cyborg" forms of resistance, and ambiguous forms of agency that are central to the operations of algorithmic assemblages nowadays. COMMUNITIES , *SOCIAL movements , *BASIC education , *SOCIAL context , *EDUCATIONAL objectives , *PUBLIC demonstrations , *CITIZENSHIP , *PROTEST movements - Abstract
This article discusses the topic of popular cultures both from the notions of folkcommunication and communication in the context of social movements. The objective is to observe the presence of elements of Folkcommunication within the scope of Popular, Community and Alternative Communication developed by social movements. The study is based on bibliographic research. We conclude that popular communication within the scope of social movements carries elements of popular cultures, including folkcommunication, and, as such, mixes this expressiveness in its social practices, such as in basic education work aimed at increasing citizen awareness and in public demonstrations of protest in the exercise of citizenship. • Introduces the nine papers on the theme of subterranean geopolitics. • Offers a wide-ranging review of works related to subterranean geopolitics. • Foregrounds six thematic agendas for future research on subterranean geopolitics. • Argues that subterranean geopolitics needs to be analysed through a relational standpoint. This position paper aims to frame and supplement other papers in this special issue on subterranean geopolitics. We trace the research genealogy that brings together the subterranean with the geopolitical before accounting for the state-of-play in the subfield of subterranean geopolitics. Six research themes and foci that can connect to and enrich the study of subterranean geopolitics are being highlighted and proposed: (i) the three-dimensional conceptualisation of territory, (ii) the political geographies of the environmental, marine and earth sciences, (iii) Anthropocene geopolitics, (iv) lived experiences and intersectional encounters, (v) popular cultures and imaginative possibilities and (vi) moral geographies. These intersect and overlap in complex ways and none are exhaustive. Indeed, along with the collection of papers in the special issue, they serve as invitations to further scholarly reflections and cross-cultural research into understanding the designing, digging, excavating and living of subterranean geopolitics. TRADITIONAL knowledge , *DIRECT instruction , *AFFECT (Psychology) , *HINTERLAND , *GRATITUDE - Abstract
This paper shares sensitive aspects of the man, professor and researcher Gilmar de Carvalho in sharing his studies and knowledge. It seeks to emphasize the rhizomatic web of how, in a simple and inclusive way, he was germinating the recognition of popular cultures, their holders and producers of this knowledge. The article brings the point of view of a teaching artist, from Ceará, whose relations with Gilmar were always present in the constant struggle for traditional knowledge, seeking to give visibility to the invisible hinterlands and/or peripheral areas of these Ceará`s, through communicational and/or educational means. In the methodological path, I used an exploratory research in my affective ties with his work in a descriptive of a qualitative approach, of how each one of them relates to everything I know and do as an active teaching artist. The result brought me several meetings with myself, this professional woman flower of Gilmar, in sensitive moments of eternal learning and gratitude. These meetings, that I now promote through this work, brought me a living Gilmar, present and active through the entire legacy he left for us, confirming yet another of his thesis that it is possible to remain alive through what is perpetuated by writing. I hope this can also sensitize everyone to see the seed man Gilmar beyond the professional. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Faced with the challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the consequent migration from the way of consuming cultural practices to the virtual, the leaders of the different manifestations gained even more support in the (re)invention of cultural manife stations and in the defense of individual and collective rights. Faced with this reality, this study aims to analyze the communication and resistance practices used by popular culture activists in Sergipe from the beginning of the pandemic period to the development of this study. For this, the places of speech, the voices of media activists were respected, using the technique of semi-structured interviews with masters from popular cultures in the state of Sergipe, together with participant observations. Finally, it was verified the importance of the mobilization of activists in digital social media, a conditioning factor for the resistance of popular culture groups and the continuation of these knowledge and practices in the period worked. The aim of this study is to analyze the process of cultural hybridization in the figurative ceramics of Alto do Moura in Caruaru, Pernambuco. Specifically, what we want to understand is the cultural reconversions that the descendants of Zé Caboclo's family have done over three generations, reconverting the codes of their culture, as popular culture, into the codes of mass culture, translated into the aesthetics of clay. The study was based on the use of oral history and combined data collection techniques such as field diary, semi-structured interview and systematic observation using photography as a record. In the course of the work it was observed that there is a reconversion of codes of the past, of memory, which usually hang around the rural or folkloric, in consumer objects that have an identity and aesthetic value by the consumer / collector. The reconversions observed in the pieces are of an identity nature, that is, reconstructing or rereading the past to enter or remain in the market, is what guarantees the sales and popular artist status to the oldest in the metier.

Carnival is part of popular culture in Brazil. However, in some regions of the country, this party is not given as much prominence as in others. In the municipality of Santa Cruz do Sul, in Vale do Rio Pardo/RS, the traditional street carnival, with samba schools and blocks, is the subject of disputes between carnival clubs, the government, and the private sector. This article discusses these disputes through the analysis of the two street carnivals that take place in town: the one known as Descida da Júlio, which initially emerges as an act of resistance to changes in the traditional street carnival proposed by the local government; and the one known as Bailinho de Carnaval da Borges, the result of an innovative initiative of local business owners. These two alternatives are analyzed as a means to discuss tensions in the cultural context, through the main national popular festival, having as background matters related to identity and the right to the city. This article follows the theory of cultural studies, in dialogue with the literature on urban and regional development. It is based on literature review and document analysis. The results indicate existing social fissures in the municipality and different society projects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Like the cities of Elmina (Ghana) and Ouidah (Benin), the tragedy of the transatlantic slave trade had a strong impact on Goree Island for three centuries. It bears witness to the memories of slavery through the dark quarters of slaves and the beautiful villas of slave traders, attracting the attention of visitors. Listed as a World Heritage Site since 1978, Gorée translates both the exploitation and the humiliation of the African people. It has become a heritage labyrinth in which live shows emerge, bringing together Africa and its diaspora. If the traces and memories of slavery can shape the history of African societies, how can popular cultures be mobilized on a spatial and temporal scale in a dynamic of tourism development in Goree? This article thus attempts to analyze the festivals, artistic productions and traditional senegalese struggle understood as tools for enhancing the painful memories of slavery. It also questions their economic dimension, generating multiple challenges and actors' games. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This article aims to collaborate in the reflection on the presence of popular cultures in contemporary argentine art from the analysis of a set of works by the artist Florencia Sadir. From the observation of the materiality of the pieces, I seek to investigate the incorporated techniques, the procedures carried out and the relationships with the natural and cultural environment in which they were produced. Exploring the artist's strategies in the search for community knowledge put into play, forces us to think about some relationships with the historical and political context in order to develop an analysis of aesthetic experiences in a situated way. The learning of ancient trades, the incorporation of craft techniques and the exchange in rural territories are some of the keys in the search for what is one's own, where the popular appears as a powerhouse of knowledge and creative possibilities, unfolding in turn various social relationships with impact on new events., El presente artículo aspira a colaborar en la reflexión sobre la presencia de las culturas populares en el arte contemporáneo argentino a partir del análisis de un conjunto de obras realizadas por la artista Florencia Sadir.

In it there was discussion, among other topics, of Popular Education and popular cultures and religiosities. As transverse to these issues the question of the intellectuals and their relationship with the people always arose. In this article we think about this issue from Michael Löwy and Robert Sayre´s hypothesis for a sociology of romanticism.

his article proposes to analyze the relationship between the process of musealization of Popular Cultures and the identity references of the Mestres and Mestras of the city of Laranjeiras (SE), from the Casa do Folclore Zé Candunga, aiming to understand, their social functions, objectives and the relationship with the knowledge and practices of these Masters and the local Mistress, projecting to the visiting public and the local community a sense of being a primordial granary of this plural type of manifestations. Casa Candunga arises in a context in which an expansion of the local cultural valorization was thought, through the projection process inaugurated in 2005, with the objective of creating a museum space that would dialogue with the theme in the city. From a methodological path based on document analysis, dialoguing with concepts of Cultural Studies and Social Museology, we establish a diagnosis and a rational systematization of the documentation accessed as an integral part of the proposed objectives as a way of understanding the role of the House in folklore, cultural development and identity of its community in the museological perspective. Vara López, Alicia and Vara López, Alicia
- Abstract
The following work proposes didactic strategies to use in high school classrooms to address the educational potential of Ana Isabel García Llorente (1991-2017), better known as Gata Cattana. The work of this multifaceted artist from Córdoba lies between poetry and rap.In her music, which is deeply rooted in Flamenco and the Andaluz culture, she embodies a discourse that is non-conformist with the surrounding reality and a commitment to feminism.By using different proposed activitiesfor high school students, what will be examined is the functionality of classical cultural references as they relate to the frequent emergence of a critical perspective towards traditional narrative.Furthermore, there will be a focus on the numerous references to the narrative of adventure and scienc fiction that leave a recurring personal mark in various songs. In this complex imagery, the narrator plays key roles in spacial, temporal or interstellar journeys as a symbol of her poetic explorations. All of this referential richness will be delved into from a didactical perspective, which constitutes a counter-imagery with respect to the mainstream rap, featured by men.

The quota policy transformed the university community in a material and conceptual way, from its racial and consequently class composition, finally welcoming the black, indigenous, and low-income population, and paving the way for the epistemological disputes that non-Western thoughts fought in amidst the monoculture and hegemony of Western thought. This essay materializes a period before the quota policy in higher education and the emergence of other epistemological matrices in the policy of producing knowledge about African matrix popular cultures., A política de cotas transformou a comunidade universitária de maneira material e conceitual, desde sua composição racial, consequentemente de classe, acolhendo finalmente a população negra, indígena e de baixa renda, e cimentando o caminho para as disputas epistemológicas que os pensamentos não ocidentais travaram em meio à monocultura e hegemonia do pensamento ocidental.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES Taieira de Laranjeiras is a group part of popular cultures formed mostly of women, whose leaders are members of the “nagô”, a religion of African origin that worships Orishas da Costa in Brazil. This group also worships two Catholic saints – known to be the saints who protect black people, namely, São Benedito and Nossa Senhora do Rosário – especially in the Ritual of Coronation of Taieira’s Queen that takes place at the Three Kings Festival, a festivity linked to the Cultural Encounter of Laranjeiras. Taieira moves mutually both from the Terreiro Nagô Santa Bárbara Virgin and from the Catholic Church São Benedito and Nossa Senhora do Rosário, located in the municipality of Laranjeiras, State of SergipeBrazil. Taieira and other groups of popular cultures may go through actions to be said or recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage and are commonly referred as cultural expressions to stimulate local tourism. In general, they are also chosen as faces of “sergipanidade” in official speeches, in cultural places (such as Largo da Gente Sergipana) and in cultural events and festivities. This doctoral thesis started with the concept “religion” as a useful category for research in Sociology of Religion and sought to build dialogues with Religious Studies and Cultural and Literary Studies, focusing on “oral poetry”. In the doctoral research, we sought to understand public ritual processes carried out by Taieira to analyze whether the categories oral poetry and religion understood as language are comparable and mobilizing factors in the historical permanence of the group. The qualitative study – based on field and theoreticalbibliographic research in Sociology of Religion – allows us to affirm that these notions are comparable from their traits and formative elements that can be observed in the social dynamics and in the continuity of Taieira group. This conclusion was possible through the following research paths built on 4 sections. (1) Panoramas and concepts – focusing on the term “religion” – to offer a view on religion as a sociological issue and to see how the construction of this concept appears in Cultural Studies. (2) Construction of the analysis category proposed in the doctoral thesis: religion and oral poetry as language, highlighting some theoretical perspectives on the concept of ritual. (3) Map of bibliographic research, panoramas and deconstructions on other related themes associated with our research object (popular cultures, folklore, cultural heritage, popular religiosity), to inform the reader about the huge intricacy that makes up the field of popular cultures. (4) Research studies and panoramas concerning historical aspects of Taieira; conflicts, recognition and agency of groups of popular cultures in the Cultural Encounter of Laranjeiras; secondary empirical data based on research; primary empirical data collected in field observations (description of ritual processes and challenges experienced by Taieira); resistance, recognition, appreciation and material conditions of Taieira; data analysis based on the analysis category religion and oral poetry as language in ritual processes of Taieira. We conclude that oral poetry and religion as language are comparable, inseparable and non-dichotomous elements in the ritual processes of Taieira, revealing agency towards realization of meaning, which corroborates a way of life. Taieira's oral-poetry-as-language is, concurrently, ludic and religious, and Taieira's religion-aslanguage is, concurrently, religious and ludic.

After taking care to redefine the concepts of trace, heritage and memory, we focus on the heritage process, which begins with the selection of traces and finishes with their interpretation until they become a collective memory. We shall examine in particular the dynamics of popular cultures, as opposed to academic cultures. This paper examines the embodied practical knowledge (know-how) that make up the organizational practices of popular cultures in the northeast Brazilian municipality of Caruaru, located in the microzone of Agreste in the state of Pernambuco. We held informal and semi-structured interviews with fifteen masters and artists from Caruaru, linked to eleven different popular culture segments, and performed non-participant observation in workshops, meetings, and forums. Our discussion reflects on the ancestries, affections between family members, masters and apprentices, explicit rules, conflicts, and distinctions constituting the popular know-how that underlies organizational practices. We highlight as the main contributions of this study to Organizational Studies: the production of authentic knowledge about organizing practiced in peripheral contexts; and the questioning of the distinction between ‘knowing’ and ‘doing’ and instrumental rationality as the basis for organizational practices. Finally, we point out how practice theory initiates a wider discussion about popular cultures in a peripheral context like the Agreste of Pernambuco, which includes the contribution of other perspectives and leads to concrete actions in practice.

- Abstract
Venezuela has undergone radical changes in the last 20 years, both political-ideological changes and changes in cultural and educational policies that have left deep traces in the (ethno)musicological field. Two phases can be clearly distinguished. The first was led since 1999 by Hugo Chávez, whose orientations had a considerable impact on interest in popular cultures and the construction of values for a new liberating ideal. It was a phase of abundance and enthusiasm with many initiatives, but also of lack of tolerance among adversaries. The second phase has begun in 2013 with the death of Chávez and intends to follow his orientation, but the strangling international embargo and the attention of only a few priority areas prevent its realization. This time is characterized by enormous precariousness and unsuccessful attempts to make some achievements survive. However, new initiatives and productions are emerging that try to defend a minimum of continuity and activity, where the integration of opponents is accepted., A Venezuela passou por mudanças radicais nos últimos 20 anos, tanto nas mudanças político-ideológicas quanto nas políticas culturais e educacionais que deixaram marcas profundas no campo (etno)musicológico. ABSTRACT: This study deals with the cultural movement and the educational processes of non-formal learning that involve the universe of singing and its relations with school education in the city of São Gabriel-Bahia. This singing is a party that was created in the 1980s, with its first edition being held in 1991. The institution that organizes the singing party is Fundação Culturarte, a non-profit organization with volunteer work. Its projects are developed through fundraising through cultural notices, scheduled events and sponsorships. In this text, foundation and singing are mixed, as it is the singing that gives rise to Fundação Culturarte. The singing party was born before the creation of the Foundation, from the ideas and ideals of some young people from the city of São Gabriel who were looking for a cultural movement from the ground up to have fun. They then got together and formed the MAC (Movement of Art and Culture) that suffered persecution from society at the time. Some stop working at MAC and others join the social and political movement of the Catholic Church, being supported by a priest. From that was created JUPP (Youth United in the Pursuit of Peace). These young people start working with theatre, people's political awareness and some social work. The combination or experience of these two groups gave rise to the CulturArte Group, which performed the first singing, and later constituted the Fundação Culturarte de São Gabriel. Our focus within the study was to deal with the process of cultural formation related to the educational, defending the idea that the São Gabriel´s singing (Cantoria de São Gabriel) movement promotes educational practices between formal school and non-formal education. Therefore, we treat singing as a hybrid event that brings together various manifestations of music, poetry and popular cultures, in a process of plural education. We then call for our textual dialogue the experiences of Gohn (2003, 2004, 2010 and 2011) who deal with social movements and non-formal education processes based on them; Brandão (1981, 1997, 2002a, 2002b) with his studies on cultures and the expansion of the concept of education for education, ideas that we have shared since the title of this research. We amalgamate and dialogue these authors with the idea of cultural hybridism from Canclini (2000 and 2003) and the constant "movement" of popular cultures, bringing the concept of hybridity to explain the hybrid relationship between the educational processes of São Gabriel´s singing (Cantoria de São Gabriel and school education. The knowledge that is in the universe of singing such as reisado groups, the São Gonçalo roda, the art of the circus, the capoeira circle and with them a whole popular songbook with local musical and literary productions are knowledge that move a pedagogical process, promoting educations. São Gabriel´s singing (Cantoria de São Gabriel is an innovative event that brings together different types of knowledge from popular culture groups, hybridizing them with school knowledge, both contributing to other learning. Finally, what moves us is the certainty of the work's contribution to a broadening of studies and research in the fields of Education intertwined with music and popular cultures.

- Abstract
We researched the popular cultures in interface with school education, in order to understand the power relationships imbued on educational practices that hold back a praxis aimed to the acknowledgement of ethnical-cultural diversity. We delimitated successful experiences in two cities whose population constitution turns out from conflicting colonization processes in Mato Grosso. Ruled in previous researches which we identified the other dynamics of power among generations who feed collective life with an education marked on the knowing, praying, dancing, eating and playing body in saints' parties. We concluded that the teacher cannot transpose the school system barriers before an unfinished, complex, dialectic reality, without am education ruled on comprehension of diversified social reality and of collective learning. This article examines the translation of two ancient Greek myths into theme park attractions in European theme parks. Following a very general discussion of the reasons for the popularity of ancient myths in modern media, the authors present a model of cultural translation in theme parks. The model is then applied to two theme park rides in Terra Mítica (Spain) and Parc Astérix (France), both of which, while referring to different myths, rely on the same iconography to establish their theme (the palace of Cnossos). The article specifically addresses scholars interested in classical reception studies and theme park studies, but may be interesting to anyone studying popular culture, cultural translation, adaptation and reception. CULTURAL property , *SOCIALIZATION - Abstract
The Samba de Roda went through a heritage process in 2004 and 2005 and was consecutively considered a Intangible National Heritage by IPHAN and Oral Humanity Heritage by UNESCO. Due to the increasing number of public policies in the cultural field, it is possible to observate the intersection of tradition that must be recognized and assisted by the state (bureaucratic representative of modernity). In the mean time, there is a music appreciation process (the Samba de Roda) to the detriment of the actors involved. This work, from the ethnographic study of Samba de Roda in the town of Conceição do Jacuípe - BA discusses both socialization dynamic promoted by samba as the history of the city, trying to understand the process of social construction of music; also presenting the relations between the discourses and practices of the surveyed group' tradition with the political dimension of the heritage process. Qualifying Corsica as "mysterious" or the Hutsul land as "Slavonic Atlantis" allows to give an emotional color to the region and thus place the discourse in the "History - Memory" paradigm. The question that we shall raise in the given study is how these two peoples with mainly oral culture recognize themselves in the descriptions that the other cultures make. Are the portraits drawn in literature positive or negative? Do these peoples recognize themselves as Noble Savages? Does the image created by the Other contribute to the shape of their national consciousness? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

“Interweaving arts: Frevo, Ala Ursa and dance creation processes at school” is a Master's research from the Professional Master's Program in Arts from the Federal University of Paraíba, supervised by professor Dr. Carolina Dias Laranjeira. The research developed a process of creation in dance at school in order to change the ways of relating art and popular cultures in the educational context, contributing to a rupture in the ways of learning, making and appreciating art, inspired by the traditional knowledge of Frevo dance and the Ala Ursa game. For that, it has the participant research as main method, being developed in the classroom, in the field of the studied dances and with the students of a class of the final years of the first stage of Elementary School (years 1-5) of the Municipal School Padre Leonel da Franca, located in the neighborhood of Ernesto Geisel, in João Pessoa - PB. The focus of observation of this dissertation is the Samba de Pareia coming from the quilombola community Mussuca, located in Laranjeiras, Sergipe. Samba is mainly performed by women, with the participation of men focused on musical performance, especially on the drum. Other instruments such as ganzá and cuíca are played by the women who sing and come together to celebrate the birth of a child in the community. The dance takes place in a circle, with choreographic variations in pairs. Currently, Samba de Pareia also performs as a show in cultural events that take place outside the community. Through a methodological approach focused on experience (MACEDO, 2015), I conducted the field research becoming a resident of Mussuca. Contact with the researched phenomenon occurred with the daily contact with samba women, including observations, informal conversations, interviews and daily sharing including fishing work and samba parties. The voices of the members, through my capture, choice and writing, make up a significant part of the dissertation text. The reflections on the performing arts and popular cultures and the Samba de Pareia (DUMAS, 2016; OLIVEIRA, 2007; SANTOS, 2017; SILVA, 2015), besides being based on the reality that I lived in Mussuca, dialogue with theoretical studies located in the field of decolonization (DUSSEL, 2013; KILOMBA, 2017; MBEMBE, 2019), racial socio-historical and ethnic issues (AKOTIRENE, 2018; ALMEIDA, 2018; DAVIS, 2016; FANON, 2008; HALL, 2003; HOOKS, 2005; NASCIMENTO, 2018; SOUZA, 2018; SOUZA, 1983). The perceived and analyzed reality expanded with the knowledge I had of the daily reality of women who do the Samba de Pareia, providing a deeper understanding and understanding not only of bodies that sambam, but that work, exist and resist.
