Health research has increased during the last decade, which has enhanced the importance of research ethics. However, little is known regarding the knowledge, awareness, attitudes, and practices of investigators in Myanmar. To assess awareness, knowledge, and attitudes of post-graduates regarding research ethics and research ethics committees (RECs) and their informed consent practices and to determine the association between their responses and certain independent factors. We conducted a cross-sectional study using a questionnaire that was distributed to a convenience sample of post-graduates at the Defence Services Medical Academy in Myanmar. We used descriptive, t test, and chi-square statistics to analyze the data. Significance was set at p < 0.05. We obtained surveys from 204 participants, which included 177 MSc and 27 PhDs of whom 63.6% had performed research and 86.5% had prior ethics training. Regarding awareness, 92.2% were aware of an REC at their academy, but only 47.1% were "fully aware" of the functions of an REC and only 52.9% stated they were familiar with ethical principles that govern human subject research. More than 90% thought that research involving human subjects should be submitted to an REC and that post-graduates should have training on research ethics. However, several of their attitudes were sub-optimal; for example, 20.2% said that informed consent is only necessary from the community leader of a village rather than from the individual, 32.8% agreed it is acceptable to fabricate research data, and 33.0% believed that ethical review of research should be restricted to international collaborative research. Calculated mean total attitude scores were statistically significantly higher in post-graduates with PhDs compared with those with MSc and higher in those with knowledge of research ethics principles compared with those lacking such knowledge. Significant gaps exist among post-graduates regarding their knowledge, awareness, and attitudes regarding research ethics and RECs. We recommend that post-graduates receive further training in research ethics to ensure the ethical conduct of research. 4. Awareness of Glasgow Coma Scale in anaesthesiology post-graduates in India: A survey

Background: Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is a universal clinical means of quantifying the level of impaired consciousness. It has completed 40 years and has stood the test of time. The assessment is best when done by trained personnel. Anaesthesiologists often manage unconscious patients. Thus, they must be well versed with GCS. This survey aimed to assess the awareness of GCS in anaesthesiology post-graduates in India. Methods: A questionnaire-based survey was carried out in 250 anaesthesiology post-graduates attending a refresher course in September 2014. Subjects and Methods: The questionnaire had 14 questions. Four questions were about the respondent, 5 questions on theoretical information and 5 questions on clinical scenarios. The available data were analysed using Epi Info. Results were considered statistically significant when P < 0.05. Results: Response was received from 174 students (response rate: 70%). Ninety percent of students felt that GCS is important in assessing unconscious patients, 94% students used GCS for unconscious patients. Fifty-eight percent of students have been formally trained in GCS. Mean of correct answers to theoretical questions was 3.98 ± 0.71. Mean of correct answers to clinical questions was 3.2 ± 1.24. Difference between the two means is 0.78. This difference is considered to be statistically significant with P < 0.0001. Conclusions: While the post-graduates are well versed with ‘theoretical aspects’ of GCS, they need to strengthen their skills on clinical application. Hence, there is a need for reinforcement of GCS training for anaesthesiology post-graduates.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the students' profile and their motivation to attend the Course of Post-Graduation in Medicine (Radiology) at the School of Medicine of Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil, as well as to quantitative and qualitatively evaluate their scientific production. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire comprised of both open and closed questions was sent to 183 post-graduates, and 148 returned with answers. Expectations, professional destiny and scientific production were evaluated. RESULTS: Technical and scientific improvement (39.08%) and docent career progression (26.82%) were the primary motivating factors for students to attend the post-graduation course. The changes resulting from the conclusion of the course were: improvement of technical knowledge (33.33%) and higher confidence in their professional performance (17.83%). This survey has demonstrated that 60.42% of the respondents work in higher education institutions and 39.58% do not, and that 84.93% of the scientific papers about themes of theses/dissertations were published. CONCLUSION: The course has met the essential requirements for researchers and docents education. Also, the survey has demonstrated the necessity of a more effective performance of the program docents besides curricular changes with the introduction of a discipline dedicated to the preparation of scientific papers. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Foi enviado questionário contendo perguntas abertas e fechadas a 183 ex-alunos. Responderam 148 egressos. Avaliaram-se expectativas, destino profissional e produção científica. RESULTADOS: O aprimoramento técnico-científico (39,08%) e a evolução na carreira docente (26,82%) foram os aspectos que mais motivaram os egressos a cursar a pós-graduação. As mudanças decorrentes da finalização do curso foram: melhor conhecimento técnico (33,33%) e maior confiança no desempenho de suas funções (17,83%). Verificou-se que 60,42% estão atuando em instituições de ensino superior e 39,58% não, e que 84,93% dos artigos científicos sobre os temas das teses/dissertações foram publicados. CONCLUSÃO: O curso tem cumprido os requisitos essenciais para a formação de pesquisadores e docentes. The experience of introduction of E-learning into the English course for post-graduates at NTU "KhPI" is discussed. The major advantages of blended education in studying a foreign language are analyzed. It is concluded that introduction of distance education may be very effective especially for adult learners. Straipsnyje remiamasi 2006 m. pradžioje atliktu 2001-2005 metų magistratūros absolventų sociologiniu tyrimu, kuriuo siekta įvertinti magistrų profesinę integraciją į Lietuvos darbo rinką, kaip magistrai realizuoja studijų metu sukauptą savo žmogiškąjį ir socialinį kapitalą. Tyrimo duomenų analizė grindžiama trimis pagrindiniais aspektais: struktūriniu, apimančiu magistrų padėties darbo rinkoje analizę; funkciniu, nagrinėjančiu magistrų pasirengimą darbo rinkai bei vertinamuoju, susijusiu su magistrų profesinės integracijos vertinimu. Plačiau aptariami tik pagrindiniai empirinio tyrimo rodikliai, geriausiai iliustruojantys analizės aspektus. The article is based on the data of the representative sociological survey of the master's studies graduates of 2001-2005. The survey was conducted by "RAIT" company on the order by the Public Policy and Management Institute. The analysis of the sociological survey data of master's studies graduates was based on the following major aspects: structural which embraced the analysis of the graduates' position in the labour market; functional which examined the readiness of the graduates for the labour market, and evaluative which is related to the evaluation of the graduates' professional integration. The functional analysis of the graduates' integration into the labour market revealed that only a part of the surveyed graduates consider their studies as facilitating in their preparation for the employment. Two-thirds agree that the master's studies helped them prepare for their professional activity and guarantee a more successful professional career. A larger part of the graduates thinks that their wages do not comply with their acquired education. The graduates are sure that their education and the professional competence are better valued by the society than the size of their income, material wellbeing and connections. Noting that high self-evaluation is prerogative for successful social integration, it is possible to maintain that the professional studies provided with the basis for more successful social integration.

13. Reading habit and text comprehension: an analysis from the reality of the postgraduates in administration

The present research was developed with the purpose of studying the habit and level of reading comprehension that the administrator professional postgraduated in courses of specialization in Administration present, considering the variants that influence the learning and teaching process. The reading is a complex activity, plural, which is developed in a lot of directions. Ruled by the constructivism learning orientation related to the process of learning manifest in adults, with the worry of studying the habits and the reading comprehension, while a phenomenon inherent in the human condition in the current situation, the study is justified by the moment which is marked by paradigmatic changes in science, in the values, in the organizations. It requires, by one hand, a wider comprehension of the environment, which is in constant transformation and, by the other hand, a permanent individual, collective and organizational learning, trying to search for the human being s self achievement. 12 subjects postgraduated in Administration took part in this study, 6 of them graduated in Administration and the 6 of them graduated in the most different areas of knowledge. The university environment of the postgraduate course lato sensu is taken as a space for the research, it is studied with the qualitative method of analysis and the technique of analysis of the content for the data treatment; the model proposed by Witter (1997) for the validation of the results related to the reading habits and Cloze s technique for the analysis of the level of reading comprehension. The results point out that the model proposed by Witter (1997) does not fit the reality of the students postgraduated in Administration, the ones who have a universe as readers constituted by the life history as readers, familiar contingences, academic contingences, personal characteristics and future perspectives of the clinic form, differently from the model proposed, the one which highlights the availability of material as one of the influencing variants in the process of learning through the reading. The evaluation of the level of text comprehension revealed that the most significant part of the responding subjects (41,67%) possess an instructional reading level, that is, they present difficulties of comprehension in some parts of the text, but they are able to understand the thematic. Compared to other professionals, the administrators are not in the same level of text comprehension. It is suggested that other works, aiming to identify the specific difficulties that are present in the text comprehension, can be carried out with a wider sample than the one used in this study, involving the teachers too A presente pesquisa foi desenvolvida com o propósito de estudar o hábito e o nível de compreensão de leitura que o profissional administrador pós-graduado em cursos de especialização em administração apresenta, considerando as variáveis que o influenciam no processo ensino-aprendizagem. A leitura é uma atividade complexa, plural, que se desenvolve em várias direções. Pautado na orientação construtivista da aprendizagem em relação ao processo de aprendizagem manifestada em adultos, na preocupação em estudar os hábitos e a compreensão da leitura, enquanto fenômeno inerente à condição humana na situação atual, o estudo justifica-se pelo momento marcado por mudanças paradigmáticas na ciência, nos valores, nas organizações. Isso requer, por um lado, uma maior compreensão do ambiente, que está em constante transformação, e, por outro, um aprendizado permanente em nível individual, grupal e organizacional, como meio de buscar a auto-realização do ser humano. Participaram do estudo doze sujeitos pós-graduados em Administração, sendo seis formados em Administração e seis nas mais diversas áreas do conhecimento. Toma-se como espaço da pesquisa o ambiente universitário em nível de pós-graduação lato sensu, estudado com o método qualitativo de análise e a técnica análise de conteúdo para tratamento dos dados; o modelo proposto por Witter (1997) para validação dos resultados relativos aos hábitos de leitura e a técnica de Cloze para análise do nível de compreensão de leitura. Os resultados apontam que o modelo proposto por Witter (1997) não se identifica com a realidade dos pós-graduados em Administração, os quais possuem um universo como leitor constituído pela história de vida como leitor, contingências familiares, contingências acadêmicas, características pessoais e perspectivas futuras de forma cíclica, diferentemente do modelo proposto, o qual destaca a disponibilidade de material como uma das variáveis influenciadoras do processo de aprendizagem pela leitura. A avaliação do nível de compreensão de leitura revelou que a maior (42%) parte dos sujeitos respondentes possui nível instrucional em relação à leitura, ou seja, apresentam dificuldades de compreensão em alguns trechos do texto, mas conseguem abordar a temática. Comparativamente a outros profissionais, os administradores não se apresentam no mesmo nível de compreensão de textos. Sugere-se que sejam desenvolvidos outros trabalhos com uma amostra maior que a utilizada neste estudo com o objetivo de identificar as dificuldades específicas que se apresentam na compreensão de textos
