Piezoelectric semiconductors (PSCs) are crucial in micro-electromechanical systems, but analyzing their size effects and accurately determining flexoelectric parameters is challenging due to the complexity of multi-scale and multi-field coupling. Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), which merge physical laws with machine learning, provide a promising approach for solving partial differential equations and parameter inversion. In this paper, we develop a PINN model to solve a system of fourth-order partial differential equations for PSC nanowires, accounting for strain gradient and flexoelectric effects. Predictions by the model closely match results from traditional numerical methods. Additionally, with minimal labeled data, the PINN model can predict both physical solutions and material parameters, such as the flexoelectric coefficient. We propose a novel measure of the market return tail risk premium based on minimum-distance state price densities recovered from high-frequency data. The tail risk premium extracted from intra-day S&P 500 returns predicts the market equity and variance risk premiums and expected excess returns on a cross section of characteristics-sorted portfolios. Additionally, we describe the differential role of the quantity of tail risk, and of the tail premium, in shaping the future distribution of index returns. The transition from a highly subjective morphological assessment to time-lapse imaging improves the accuracy of predicting embryonic developmental potential. In actual operations, embryos are cultured for 2–3 days in a time-lapse monitoring system before being transferred to recipients. However, most existing prediction models require videos or images spanning a five-day period. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a method that accurately predicts blastocyst formation given input data spanning only 2–3 days. In this study, we propose a method for predicting blastocyst formation using early morphokinetic and morphological parameters prior to the five-cell stage. We employed a YOLOv5 pretrained deep-learning network to recognize the first four-cell stages for the accurate extraction of morphokinetic parameters and used these parameters as inputs to construct four long short-term memory-based morphokinetic models for blastocyst formation prediction, obtaining the best area-under-the-curve (AUC) value of 0.7297 [0.669–0.884]. We then extracted the three frames before and after the t1–t4 time points and calculated the image entropy and gray-level co-occurrence matrix entropy as morphological features to build a prediction model. This model was subsequently fused with the morphokinetic model, and an AUC of 0.8325 [0.7601–0.9067] was achieved. In the context of Industry 4.0, many production scenarios utilise sensors to monitor manufacturing processes, resulting in massive data that can be leveraged to build machine-learning models to improve production efficiency and quality. In semiconductor manufacturing, where many sensors are employed to monitor the production process, the resulting multi-sensor data poses challenges for constructing a virtual metrology (VM) model to assess wafer quality. Furthermore, building separate prediction models for each sensor can result in a loss of redundancy present in the multi-sensor data. Therefore, this paper proposes a multi-source AdaBoost with a cross-weight sampling method for predicting the critical dimension required in VM. Compared with the existing AdaBoost algorithm in regression, the proposed method adapts well to multi-source data by incorporating a cross-weight sampling distribution. Thus, when updating the sampling weight distribution, the impact of both individual and multi-source data is considered to re-sample high-quality observations. Based on the numerical results from the synthetic datasets and case study in semiconductor manufacturing, the proposed method outperforms benchmark methods. Additionally, owing to the redundancy of multi-sensor data, the proposed method demonstrates robust performance regardless of the noise level in the semiconductor VM data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The detailed study of the effect of the initial microstructure on its evolution under hydrostatic compression before, during, and after the irreversible α → ω phase transformation and during pressure release in Zr using in situ x-ray diffraction is presented. Two samples were studied: one is plastically pre-deformed Zr with saturated hardness and the other is annealed. Phase transformation α → ω initiates at lower pressure for a pre-deformed sample but for a volume fraction of ω Zr, c > --> 0.7 , a larger volume fraction is observed for the annealed sample. This implies that the proportionality between the athermal resistance to the transformation and the yield strength in the continuum phase transformation theory is invalid; an advanced version of the theory is outlined. Phenomenological plasticity theory under hydrostatic loading is outlined in terms of microstructural parameters, and plastic strain is estimated. During transformation, the first rule is suggested, i.e., the average domain size, microstrain, and dislocation density in ω Zr for c < 0.8 are functions of the volume fraction, c of ω Zr only, which are independent of the plastic strain tensor prior to transformation and pressure. The microstructure is not inherited during phase transformation. Surprisingly, for the annealed sample, the final dislocation density and the average microstrain after pressure release in the ω phase are larger than for the severely pre-deformed sample. The results suggest that an extended experimental basis is required for the predictive models for the combined pressure-induced phase transformations and microstructure evolutions. One of the most important issues related to the strength of metals is the strain rate sensitivity of the flow stress. In this study, an analytical model of the flow stress as a function of strain rate is derived theoretically. The model can reproduce the strain rate sensitivity of the flow stress of copper over a wide range of strain rates (up to 109 s−1) quantitatively. Our theoretical derivations indicate that the strain rate sensitivity of the flow stress, especially that above 103 s−1, is a result of both the variation of the dislocation mobility mechanism with stress and the particular stress dependence of dislocation density but is not a result of each single mechanism. In particular, the stress dependence of the dislocation density and the initial dislocation density are critical to the quantitative relation of the flow stress–strain rate at high strain rate and the strain rate threshold, under which the upturn of the flow stress occurs, respectively. Moreover, experiments with copper of different initial dislocation densities at moderate and high strain rate are performed. The strain rate threshold of the flow stress upturn observed in the experiments grows considerably as initial dislocation density increases, which is in accordance with theoretical prediction by our model. Meso-scale calculations of energy localization and initiation in energetic material microstructures must capture the deformation and collapse of pores and high-temperature shear bands, which lead to hotspots. Because chemical reaction rates depend sensitively on temperature, predictive continuum models need to get the pore-collapse dynamics and resulting hotspot temperatures right; this imposes stringent demands on the fidelity of thermophysical model forms and parameters and on the numerical methods employed to perform high-resolution meso-scale calculations. Here, continuum material models for β-HMX are examined in the context of shock-induced pore collapse, treating predictions from all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations as ground truth. Using atomistics-consistent material properties, we show that the currently available strength models for HMX fail to correctly capture pore collapse and hotspot temperatures. Insights from MD are then employed to advance a Modified Johnson–Cook (M-JC) strength model, which is shown to capture key aspects of the physics of shock-induced localization in HMX. The study culminates in a MD-guided strength model for β-HMX that produces continuum pore-collapse results in better alignment on several aspects with those predicted by MD, including pore-collapse mechanism and rate, shear-band formation in the collapse zone, and temperature, strain, and stress fields in the hotspot zone and the surrounding material. The resulting MD-informed/MD-determined M-JC model should improve the fidelity of meso-scale simulations to predict the detonation initiation of HMX-based energetic materials in microstructure-aware multi-scale frameworks. Purpose: The relationship between external load and creatine-kinase (CK) response at the team/position or individual level using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) has been studied. This study aimed to compare GPS-derived and Football Movement Profile (FMP) –derived CK-prediction models for national-team soccer players. The second aim was to compare the performance of general and individualized CK prediction models. Methods: Four hundred forty-four national-team soccer players (under 15 [U15] to senior) were monitored during training sessions and matches using GPS. CK was measured every morning from whole blood. The players had 19.3 (18.1) individual GPS-CK pairs, resulting in a total of 8570 data points. Machine learning models were built using (1) GPS-derived or (2) FMP-based parameters or (3) the combination of the 2 to predict the following days' CK value. The performance of general and individual-specific prediction models was compared. The performance of the models was described by R2 and the root-mean-square error (RMSE, in units per liter for CK values). Results: The FMP model (R2 =.60, RMSE = 144.6 U/L) performed similarly to the GPS-based model (R2 =.62, RMSE = 141.2 U/L) and the combination of the 2 (R2 =.62, RMSE = 140.3 U/L). The prediction power of the general model was better on average (R2 =.57 vs R2 =.37) and for 73% of the players than the individualized model. Conclusions: The results suggest that FMP-based CK-prediction models perform similarly to those based on GPS-derived metrics. General machine learning models' prediction power was higher than those of the individual-specific models. This article presents the possibility of controlling/managing the frequency selection ability of membrane-based broadband frequency sensors (MB2FS), exploiting systematic selection of membrane stiffness. MB2FS is a bio-inspired system mimicking the geometry and functionality of the basilar membrane (BM) in the mammalian cochlea. The actual BM is tapered in geometry (both length wise and thickness wise), which makes the stiffness of the membrane uniformly varied over its length. Because of varied stiffness, different locations of the BM show resonance deflection at different frequency inputs, which allow the BM to select/sense the entire sonic frequency band within its 35 mm length. While actual BM and conventional MB2FS possess homogeneous stiffness over the domain length, in this article, a comprehensive insight is provided of how the frequency selection ability of the sensors can be manipulated and controlled, predictively, using functionally graded structural stiffness. Therefore, this work is not intended to develop an artificial BM, rather is focused on developing frequency sensors inspired by the membrane stiffness of BM, which plays a vital role in the spatial selection of acoustic frequencies. The study is performed using a numerically validated predictive model developed in a semi-analytical interface to explain the effects of MB2FS stiffness variations. Based on biological occurrence of stiffness in natural BM, three functions (logarithmic, linear, and exponential) are assumed to predict the FSP. While a random sonic frequency band of 10–12 kHz is targeted in this study to demonstrate the stiffness grading principle of MB2FS, a similar process (e.g., choosing the appropriate stiffness distribution of the beam) can be used to develop both sonic and ultrasonic frequency sensors. This study presents a detailed framework of how the sensing parameters of a specific frequency band (e.g., sensing location of band start and end frequencies and membrane segment width necessary to sense the entire frequency band) are dependent on the function coefficients. Finally, a comprehensive guideline is provided to predictively determine the function coefficients for user-defined frequency selection parameters. While existing state-of-the-art only allows designing MB2FS for a specific frequency band, the work presented in this study will open the opportunity to select multiple frequency bands of an MB2FS without altering its geometric configuration. Purpose: Injury prevention is a crucial aspect of sports, particularly in high-performance settings such as elite female football. This study aimed to develop an injury prediction model that incorporates clinical, Global-Positioning-System (GPS), and multiomics (genomics and metabolomics) data to better understand the factors associated with injury in elite female football players. Methods: We designed a prospective cohort study over 2 seasons (2019–20 and 2021–22) of noncontact injuries in 24 elite female players in the Spanish Premiership competition. We used GPS data to determine external workload, genomic data to capture genetic susceptibility, and metabolomic data to measure internal workload. Results: Forty noncontact injuries were recorded, the most frequent of which were muscle (63%) and ligament (20%) injuries. The baseline risk model included fat mass and the random effect of the player. Six genetic polymorphisms located at the DCN, ADAMTS5, ESRRB, VEGFA, and MMP1 genes were associated with injuries after adjusting for player load (P <.05). The genetic score created with these 6 variants determined groups of players with different profile risks (P = 3.1 × 10−4). Three metabolites (alanine, serotonin, and 5-hydroxy-tryptophan) correlated with injuries. The model comprising baseline variables, genetic score, and player load showed the best prediction capacity (C-index:.74). Conclusions: Our model could allow efficient, personalized interventions based on an athlete's vulnerability. However, we emphasize the necessity for further research in female athletes with an emphasis on validation studies involving other teams and individuals. Objective: Artificial intelligence (AI) applications in restorative dentistry have remarkably increased in the past 5 years. This review outlines the applications, promises, and limitations of AI in the most performed procedures in restorative dentistry. Method and materials: An electronic search was performed in four databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus. The search included articles published in English language without date restriction. Two independent reviewers assessed the eligibility of the studies and performed data extraction. Any discrepancy was resolved by the consensus of a third reviewer. Results: A total of 33 studies were included in this review. For AI applications in restorative dentistry, the included studies were classified into three main groups: (1) diagnosis, detection, and prediction of the disease, (2) detection and prediction of the longevity of dental restorations, and (3) teeth detection and treatments. For each study, the AI model, type of dataset, sample size, and main results (accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and specificity) were reported. Conclusions: AI systems are promising as advantageous aids for diagnosis, prediction, and treatment in dentistry, with a high degree of accuracy. Despite the AI promises, several limitations are still unresolved and must be addressed to bridge the gap between technology and clinical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study aimed to cross-validate a recently proposed equation for the prediction of maximal oxygen uptake ( V ˙ O 2 max) in cycling exercise by using the average power output normalized by the body mass from a 5-minute time trial (RPO5-min) as the independent variable. Further, the study aimed to update the predictive equation using Bayesian informative prior distributions and meta-analysis. Methods: On different days, 49 male cyclists performed an incremental graded exercise test until exhaustion and a 5-minute time trial on a stationary cycle ergometer. We compared the actual V ˙ O 2 max with the predicted value obtained from the RPO5-min, using a modified Bayesian Bland–Altman agreement analysis. In addition, this study updated the data on the linear regression between V ˙ O 2 max and RPO5-min, by incorporating information from a previous study as a Bayesian informative prior distribution or via meta-analysis. Results: On average, the predicted V ˙ O 2 max using RPO5-min underestimated the actual V ˙ O 2 max by −6.6 mL·kg–1·min–1 (95% credible interval, −8.6 to −4.7 mL·kg–1·min–1). The lower and upper 95% limits of agreement were −17.2 (−22.7 to −12.3) and 3.8 (−1.0 to 9.5) mL·kg–1·min–1, respectively. When the current study's data were analyzed using the previously published data as a Bayesian informative prior distribution, the accuracy of predicting sample means was found to be better when compared with the data combined via meta-analyses. Conclusions: The proposed equation presented systematic bias in our sample, in which the prediction underestimated the actual V ˙ O 2 max. We provide an updated equation using the previous one as the prior distribution, which could be generalized to a greater audience of cyclists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bike fitting aims to optimize riders' positions to improve their performance and reduce the risk of injury. To calculate joint angles, the location of the joint centers of the lower limbs needs to be identified. However, one of the greatest difficulties is the location of the hip joint center due to the frequent occlusion of the anterior superior iliac spine markers. Therefore, the objective of this study was to validate a biomechanical model adapted to cycling (modified pelvic model, MPM), based on the traditional pelvic model (TPM) with an additional lateral technical marker placed on the iliac crests. MPM was also compared with a widely used model in cycling, trochanter model (TM). Thirty-one recreational cyclists pedaled on a roller bike while the movement was captured with a 7-camera VICON system. The position of the hip joint center and knee angle were calculated and compared with the TPM continuously (along 10 pedaling cycles) and discreetly at 90° and 180° crank positions. No significant differences were found in the position of the hip joint center or in the knee flexion/extension angle between the TPM and the MPM. However, there are differences between TPM and TM (variations between 4.1° and 6.9° in favor of the TM at 90° and 180°; P <.001). Bland–Altman graphs comparing the models show an average difference or bias close to 0° (limits of agreement [0.2 to −8.5]) between TPM and MPM in both lower limbs and a mean difference of between −4° and −7° (limits of agreement [−0.6 to −13.2]) when comparing TPM and TM. Given the results, the new cycling pelvic model has proven to be valid compared with the TPM when performing bike fitting studies, with the advantage that the occluded markers are avoided.
