ABSTRACT: The primary feathers of ducks have important economic value in the poultry industry. This study quantified the primary feather phenotype of Nonghua ducks, including the primary feathers' length, area, distribution of black spots, and feather symmetry. And genome-wide association analysis was used to screen candidate genes that affect the primary feather traits. The genome-wide association study (GWAS) results identified the genetic region related to feather length (FL) on chromosome 2. Through Linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis, candidate regions (chr2: 115,246,393–116,501,448 bp) were identified and were further annotated to 5 genes: MRS2, GPLD1, ALDH5A1, KIAA0319, and ATP9B. Secondly, candidate regions related to feather black spots were identified on chromosome 21. Through LD analysis, the candidate regions (chr21: 163,552–2,183,853 bp) were screened and further annotated to 47 genes. Among them, STK4, CCN5, and YWHAB genes were related to melanin-related pathways or pigment deposition, which may be key genes affecting the distribution of black spots on feathers. In addition, we also screened 125 genes on multiple chromosomes that may be related to feather symmetry. Among them, significant SNPs on chromosome 1 were further identified as candidate regions (chr1: 142,118,209–142,223,605 bp) through LD analysis and annotated into 2 genes, TGFBRAP1 and LOC113839965. These results reported the genetic basis of the primary feather from multiple phenotypes, and offered valuable insights into the genetic basis for the growth and development of duck feathers and feather color pattern.

ABSTRACT: The feather is an important epidermal appendage, plays an important role in the life activities of avian specie, and has important economic value. Revealing the molecular regulation mechanism of feather growth has a significant meaning in studying adaptive evolution, physiology, and mating of avian species and also provides a theoretical reference for poultry breeding. In this study, the genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) of 358 ducks was based on primary feather length phenotypic data (28–60 d), length growth rates (LGRs), and maturity scores (60 d) to explore the genetic basis affecting feather growth and maturation. The results showed that, among the primary feather 1 to 5 in ducks, the mean LGR of primary feather 2 was the fastest, with the longest length. The primary feathers in males grew and matured slightly faster than in females. The mean maturity scores of primary feather 10∼7 were higher than primary feather 1 to 3 in ducks. GWAS further showed 116 SNPs associated with feather length traits. In addition, 2 candidate regions (Chr1: 127,407,230–127,524,879 bp and Chr21: 182,061,707–183,616,298 bp) were associated with LGR, which contain total 13 candidate genes (The extremely significant SNPs were mainly located in 2 genes: Chr1: REPS2 and Chr21: PTPRT). Four candidate regions (Chr1: 29,113,036–28,675,018 bp, Chr2: 18,253,612–149,111,290 bp, Chr15: 6,489,774 to 12,138,221 bp and Chr21: 6,578,021–8,472,904 bp) were associated with feather maturity, which contain total 24 candidate genes (The extremely significant SNPs were mainly located in 4 genes: Chr1: IMMP2L, DOCK4 and DDX10, Chr2: LDLRAD4). In conclusion, sex factors influence feather growth and maturity, and the genetic basis of the growth /maturity trait between different feathers is similar. REPS2, PTPRT genes, and IMMP2L, DOCK4, DDX10, and LDLRAD4 are important candidate genes that influence feather growth and maturity, respectively.

Abstract Background Most of long-distance migratory raptors suspend moult during migration but detailed information is patchy for most of the Palearctic species. The aim of this research is to verify if active moulting in migrating Western Marsh Harriers occurs and to quantify the extent of moulting along the season focusing on primary feathers. Methods During a whole post-breeding migration at the Strait of Messina in Southern Italy, we gathered information about symmetrical flight feather moult from 221 adults by taking pictures of raptors passing at close range. Results We found active moulting primaries during autumn migration in 48.4% of our samples. Slight differences on the extension and timing among sex classes were recorded during the season, with adult females showing a more advanced moult stage than adult males. Conclusion The finding that the extension of the suspended moult was already defined in migratory individuals might be explained as an adaptation to minimize the energy required for moulting during migration.

We were unable to discriminate between age classes or sex within groups, but could discriminate among farms and between years for the one farm where we had 2 years of samples. In our pilot study, stable isotope analysis of primary feather tissue was a reliable technique for distinguishing wild and pen‐raised bobwhite for 12–14 months following postjuvenal or postnuptial feather molt. Summer stocking, feeding stations, or long‐term survival of pen‐raised birds would reduce the efficacy of this technique, depending upon the definition of a wild population. © 2017 The Wildlife Society.

Fault bars are narrow structural malformations in feathers. Procellariiform seabirds have long wings that generate lift and power at high speeds and short tails that may not provide dynamic stability. We predicted that Procellariiformes would have fewer fault bars in their wing feathers than in their tail feathers. We examined Laysan Albatrosses Phoebastria immutabilis(bycatch in the Japanese pelagic longline fishery in the western north Pacific)and compared the occurrence of fault bars between primary remiges and rectrices using hierarchical Bayesian models. The replacement and growth of 311 primary feathers of eight captive male rock pigeons, Columba livia Gmelin, 1789 were monitored daily. Feather replacement was recorded in all months, but the primaries 1 to 5 (innermost primaries) were replaced mostly from September to December, whereas the primaries 6 to 10 (outermost primaries) were more frequently replaced from January to August. Each primary was held in plumage from six to fifteen months, but the lifetime of the outer feathers was longer than that of the inner feathers. A new primary emerges two or three days after its predecessor has been dropped, but the primaries replacing the feathers accidentally lost during bird handling emerge only after about eight days. The average growth period of a primary ranged from 21 to 37 days, with the larger and outermost feathers exhibiting a longer growth period. A constant average growth rate of 4 to 5 mm/day was found for all primaries until the last two days of growth, when the growth rate of the feathers became progressively slower. Bilateral symmetry in the primary replacement, when the same feather is replaced simultaneously in both wings, was not significant (22.2%) in the birds monitored in this study.

Immigration of common cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo hanedae into inland areas might result in substantial loss of inland fish stocks due to predation. We estimated the immigration and habitat of piscivorous common cormorants into inland areas using 3 stable isotope values (δC, δN and δS) collected from 24 cormorant specimens and 9 grey heron ( Ardea cinerea) specimens for comparison; Samples were collected (shot) during the winter and spring of 2007-2008 in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture, an inland area of eastern Japan. Variation in carbon and nitrogen isotope values between cormorant individuals was low in the liver and in the pectoralis major muscle, with a rapid rate of turnover. Relatively higher variation in the primary and secondary feathers, the values of which reflect a moulting period, suggest inter-individual variation in habitat use and prey items during and after summer moulting. Predicted mean isotope values of cormorant prey, calculated from fractionation values of the primary feathers, did not support littoral feeding of the cormorants after moulting. Based on empirical measurement of δS thresholds, with >10 ‰ being indicative of tissue grown in a marine environment, the percentage of individuals feeding in seawater- dominated areas after moulting was only 16.7 % in cormorants and 0 % in grey herons, suggesting the majority of cormorants examined inhabited inland areas and preyed upon inland fish stock after summer moulting. By quantifying phenology and duration of remigial moult in Surf Scoters ( Melanitta perspicillata (L., 1758)) and White-winged Scoters ( Melanitta fusca (L., 1758)), we tested whether timing of moult is dictated by temporal optima or constraints. Scoters ( n = 3481) were captured during moult in Alaska, British Columbia, and Washington, and remigial emergence dates were determined. We provide evidence for a pre-emergence interval of 7.3 days that occurs after old primaries are shed and before new ones become visible. All age and sex classes of both scoter species exhibited a wide range of emergence dates (Surf Scoters: 26 June to 22 September; White-winged Scoters: 6 July to 21 September) suggestive of a lack of strong temporal optima for remigial moult. For both species, timing of moult was influenced by site, year, age, and sex. Relative to other waterfowl species, scoters have typical remigial growth rates (Surf Scoters: 3.9 mm·day-1; White-winged Scoters: 4.3 mm·day-1) but a long flightless period (34-49 days), in part because their relatively high wing-loading requires a greater proportion of feather regrowth to regain flight. Primary feathers of soaring land birds have evolved into highly specialized flight feathers characterized by morphological improvements affecting aerodynamic performance. The foremost feathers in the cascade have to bear high lift-loading with a strong bending during soaring flight. A challenge to the study of feather aerodynamics is to understand how the observed low drag and high lift values in the Reynolds ( Re) regime from 1.0 to 2.0E4 can be achieved. Computed micro-tomography images show that the feather responds to high lift-loading with an increasing nose-droop and profile-camber. Wind-tunnel tests conducted with the foremost primary feather of a White Stork ( Ciconia ciconia) at Re = 1.8E4 indicated a surprisingly high maximum lift coefficient of 1.5 and a glide ratio of nearly 10. We present evidence that this is due to morphologic characteristics formed by the cristae dorsales as well as air-permeable arrays along the rhachis. Measurements of lift and drag forces with open and closed pores confirmed the efficiency of this mechanism. Porous structures facilitate a blow out, comparable to technical blow-hole turbulators for sailplanes and low speed turbine-blades. We examined feather molt progress of northern fulmars ( Fulmarus glacialis) at Cape Vera in the Canadian High Arctic through opportunistic observation of individuals in flight from 2003 to 2006, and examination of bodies and wings of 127 individuals collected at the site, from 2003 to 2005. We found no evidence suggesting that fulmars shed primary feathers during breeding. Prebasic molt was initiated in the head, neck, sides, belly and back approximately 1 week before hatch. We failed to detect a sex effect on molt progress, but molt among breeders was delayed compared to molt in non- or failed breeders. This study constitutes a baseline we feel may be useful to: (1) researchers interested in feather replacement chronology, wherein feathers are used as sources of biological information; and (2) researchers interested in eventual assessment of relationships among large-scale environmental processes and molt progress in this species, especially in light of predicted changes to Arctic regions.
