The contribution of animals to biological transfers of essential nutrients in ecosystems is increasingly recognised as a significant component of ecosystem functioning. In the Southern Ocean (SO), primary productivity is primarily limited by the availability of iron in the euphotic zone, which makes animals locally releasing iron-rich faeces potential fertilizers of the SO food web. We quantified the amounts of iron released by four species of Antarctic pack-ice seals using a bioenergetic model set up with best available data on species abundance, energetics, diets and prey composition. We estimated that leopard, crabeater, Weddell and Ross seals together release 208 tonnes of iron per year (95% confidence interval [104–378]). This is equivalent to the current contribution of SO humpback whales and four times that of SO sperm whales. At the population level, crabeater seals are the major contributors (73%), followed by Weddell (21%), leopard (4%) and Ross seals (1%). Locally, each species shows different daily individual iron release rates, suggesting the patchy and transient impact of these iron releases on primary producers might differ according to species. Beyond quantitative aspects, pack-ice seals' contribution to horizontal, vertical and trophic transfers of iron depends on their habitat preferences, on their ecology and behaviours at sea and on the ice. Although their role as iron vectors has been mostly overlooked so far, our results place pack-ice seals alongside whales and penguins as significant components of the SO ecosystem biological iron cycling, thus contributing substantially to its productivity and functioning. Studies on limnology are essential to reservoir management; nevertheless, few are known about the limnological features of the Andean reservoirs in Ecuador. To overcome this limitation in the information, from December 2018 to December 2019, the limnological characteristics of El Labrado and Chanlud reservoirs in the Machángara river basin (Ecuador south) were examined. Using the light/dark bottles technique, the primary productivity (PP) of phytoplankton was studied in conjunction with (1) vertical profiles of oxygen concentrations, water temperature, nitrogen, phosphorus, alkalinity, and heterotrophic bacteria; (2) Secchi disk transparency; and (3) meteorological factors such as wind force, precipitation, and water level. Data indicate that both reservoirs are polymictic, with alkaline waters, low nutrients, and low PP rates. Despite this, a principal component analysis revealed that Chanlud exhibits higher nitrogen, alkalinity, heterotrophic bacteria, and PP values. In two approaches through multiple linear regression analysis, each per reservoir, the PP was explained mainly by water temperature, depth, light, heterotrophic bacteria, and meteorological parameters. The low concentrations of nutrients and the low residency time explain the low PP values. Likewise, the altitudinal factor (i.e., both reservoirs are 3400 m above sea level) and the low human perturbations in surrounding reservoir zones play a crucial role in explaining their poor PP. Notwithstanding the low metabolic rates, clear seasonal trends were observed in both reservoirs; the lowest PP rates occurred during the cold season. To our knowledge, this is the first limnological study of high Andean reservoirs in Ecuador. These findings should be part of Andean reservoir management protocols, contributing significantly to local conservation efforts. Lakes on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) serve as both indicators of and safeguards against climate change, playing a crucial role in the aquatic ecosystems of the TP. While considerable attention has been devoted to studying the thermal and dynamic processes of TP lakes, research focusing on their ecological variations has been limited. In this study, we selected Namco, a representative lake on the TP, to investigate its water ecological processes using the AQUATOX lake ecological model. Long-term ecological variations spanning from 1980 to 2020 were analyzed based on lake observations. Our results revealed a consistent increase in water nutrients, particularly total nitrogen (WTN), and total phosphorus (WTP), over the study period. Additionally, the concentrations of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and water gross and net primary production (WGPP and WNPP) exhibited a significant upward trend. Despite the persistent state of poor nutrition in the lake, the ecological conditions improved. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that the concentrations of WGPP, WNPP, and Chl-a were more sensitive to the local climate and hydrology compared to WTN and WTP. A continuously warming climate would heat up the lake water body, further enhancing primary production and improving water quality in the future. Tropical mangroves are subjected to extreme environmental conditions yet remain highly productive ecosystems. The Mandovi and Zuari estuaries of Goa on the western coast of India are lined by mangroves and are a rich source of fisheries that supports the coastal livelihood. Despite their ecological and economic significance, the nutrient and organic matter dynamics in tropical mangrove ecosystems remain poorly studied. The hydrographic conditions in the mangrove and adjacent estuarine waters are dictated by monsoonal precipitation, freshwater input, tides, and influx of seawater, resulting in subsequent changes in their physicochemical parameters and organic matter concentrations. The impact of these changes on the phytoplankton biomass and primary productivity in estuarine waters was investigated during the pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. Dissolved inorganic nutrients, such as nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, phosphate and silicate, displayed wide seasonal variability and were higher during the low tide than those in high tide. Isotopic and elemental ratios of carbon and nitrogen revealed that primary productivity in the estuaries was enhanced by the outwelling of mangrove-derived organic matter. The highest chlorophyll a and primary productivity were observed during the pre-monsoon season, with Zuari exhibiting higher levels compared with Mandovi. Multivariate statistical analyses confirmed that primary productivity was influenced mainly by temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen and organic matter. Reservoirs are a significant source of carbon (C) to the atmosphere, but their emission rates vary in space and time. We compared C emissions via diffusive and ebullitive pathways at several stations in six large hydropower reservoirs in the southeastern US that were previously sampled in summer 2012. We found that carbon dioxide (CO2) diffusion was the dominant flux pathway during 2012 and 2022, with only three exceptions where methane (CH4) diffusion or CH4 ebullition dominated. CH4 diffusion rates were positively associated with water temperature. However, we found no clear predictors of CH4 ebullition, which had extremely high variability, with rates ranging from 0 to 739 mg C m−2 day−1. For CO2 diffusion, the direction of the flux shifted between 2012 and 2022, where all but three stations across all reservoirs emitted CO2 in summer 2012, but every station sequestered CO2 in summer 2022. Here, indicators of greater algal production were associated with CO2 sequestration, including surface chlorophyll‐a concentration, surface dissolved oxygen saturation, and pH. Additional sampling campaigns outside the summer season highlighted the importance of seasonal phenology in primary production on the direction of CO2 diffusive fluxes, which shifted to positive CO2 fluxes by the end of August as productivity decreased. Our results demonstrate the importance of capturing CO2 sequestration in field and modeling measurements and understanding the seasonal drivers of these estimates. Measuring C emissions from multiple pathways in reservoirs and understanding their spatiotemporal responses and variability are vital to reducing uncertainties in global upscaling efforts. Plain Language Summary: Inland waters, including reservoirs used for many different purposes, contribute greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane to the atmosphere. With 34 times more global warming potential than carbon dioxide, methane is of particular concern since reservoirs emit disproportionally large amounts of it. However, our ability to quantify reservoir emissions is limited by high variability in these emissions over space and time. In this study, we measured emissions from several stations across six reservoirs and compared these emissions to a previous study from 2012 to understand potential longer‐term variation in emissions and assess driver variables. Overall, we found that algal productivity was an important driver of fluxes among the reservoirs and could in fact lead to carbon dioxide sequestration. However, the seasonal phenology in algal productivity and related variables were also important to understand when considering emissions variability within a reservoir and over time. As we continue to collect emissions measurements from reservoirs, studies focused on multiple spatial and temporal scales (i.e., day and night) can improve upscaled estimates of greenhouse gas emissions to better quantify the role of reservoirs in the global carbon cycle. Marine phytoplankton are primary producers in ocean ecosystems and emit dimethyl sulfide (DMS) into the atmosphere. DMS emissions are the largest biological source of atmospheric sulfur and are one of the largest uncertainties in global climate modeling. DMS is oxidized to methanesulfonic acid (MSA), sulfur dioxide, and hydroperoxymethyl thioformate, all of which can be oxidized to sulfate. Ice core records of MSA are used to investigate past DMS emissions but rely on the implicit assumption that the relative yield of oxidation products from DMS remains constant. However, this assumption is uncertain because there are no long-term records that compare MSA to other DMS oxidation products. Here, we share the first long-term record of both MSA and DMS-derived biogenic sulfate concentration in Greenland ice core samples from 1200 to 2006 CE. While MSA declines on average by 0.2 µg S kg-1 over the industrial era, biogenic sulfate from DMS increases by 0.8 µg S kg-1. This increasing biogenic sulfate contradicts previous assertions of declining North Atlantic primary productivity inferred from decreasing MSA concentrations in Greenland ice cores over the industrial era. The changing ratio of MSA to biogenic sulfate suggests that trends in MSA could be caused by time-varying atmospheric chemistry and that MSA concentrations alone should not be used to infer past primary productivity.

Abstract Under warming conditions and with increasing human perturbations, rivers across the globe are facing drastic shifts in their hydrologic regime, resulting in fragmentation and disconnection from the catchment. Subsequently, a dependency on in situ primary productivity as the source of organic matter increases and warrants detailed investigation of the nature of primary production in urbanized river systems. In this study, primary productivity was estimated at multiple locations along the continuum of an engineered (Sabarmati) and a free flowing (Mahi) river systems in India using 13C tracer incubation method. Significantly enhanced primary productivity in the riverfront (engineered construction along the Sabarmati that holds water supplied by a canal) and polluted downstream of the Sabarmati compared to free flowing Mahi was observed. It was also observed that water stagnancy, temperature, and nutrient availability were the key factors regulating the rates of primary productivity in the urban river system. The study highlights the salient features of riverine primary productivity associated with engineered modifications, which needs to be considered for future river development projects.

The amount of energy available in a system constrains large-scale patterns of abundance. Here, we test the role of temperature and net primary productivity as drivers of flying insect abundance using a novel continental-scale data source: weather surveillance radar. We use the United States NEXRAD weather radar network to generate a near-daily dataset of insect flight activity across a gradient of temperature and productivity. Insect flight activity was positively correlated with mean annual temperature, explaining 38% of variation across sites. By contrast, net primary productivity did not explain additional variation. Grassland, forest and arid-xeric shrubland biomes differed in their insect flight activity, with the greatest abundance in subtropical and temperate grasslands. The relationship between insect flight abundance and temperature varied across biome types. In arid-xeric shrublands and in forest biomes the temperature–abundance relationship was indirectly (through net primary productivity) or directly (in the form of precipitation) mediated by water availability. These results suggest that temperature constraints on metabolism, development, or flight activity shape macroecological patterns in ectotherm abundance. Assessing the drivers of continental-scale patterns in insect abundance and their variation across biomes is particularly important to predict insect community response to warming conditions. Rodents are one of the most abundant and diverse groups of mammals in arid zones. Their population and community dynamics are closely linked to climatic factors and pulses of primary productivity activation. In the future, climatic conditions in arid ecosystems could become more extreme as a consequence of climate change, which could affect the species that inhabit these regions. In this paper, we review the literature on the ecological response of rodents in the world's arid zones, at the population and community levels, to climatological factors (temperature and precipitation), climatic events and the possible impact of climate change. We used the PRISMA protocol to systematically search the literature, and the “vote‐counting” method to count positive, null or negative responses of the rodents. At the population level, rodent density and abundance responded positively to precipitation, while biomass responded negatively and reproduction responded positively to increasing temperature. At the community level, rodent density, biomass and diversity increased after rainfall. El Niño events were positively related to rodent population increases. In contrast, intense storms affected the survival of some species. Rodents with physiological adaptations suited to living in arid areas, for example, the heteromyids, responded positively to precipitation and could suffer fewer negative ecological consequences in the future when exposed to increased temperature and changes in precipitation. Surface temperature of the oceans has increased globally over the past decades. In coastal areas influenced by eastern boundary upwelling systems (EBUS), winds push seawater offshore and deep, cold and nutrient-rich seawater rise towards the surface, partially buffering global warming. On the North coast of Portugal, the NW Iberian upwelling system allows extensive kelp forests to thrive in these "boreal-like" conditions, fostering highly diverse and productive communities. However, the warming of the upper layer of the ocean may weaken this upwelling, leading to higher sea surface temperature and lower nutrient input in the coastal areas. The effects of these changes on the structure and function of coastal ecosystems remain unexplored. The present study aimed to examine the combined effects of elevated temperature and nutrient depletion on semi-naturally structured assemblages. The eco-physiological responses investigated included growth, chlorophyll fluorescence and metabolic rates at the levels of individual species and whole assemblages. Our findings showed interactive effects of the combination of elevated temperature with nutrient depletion on the large canopy-forming species (i.e., kelp). As main contributor to community response, those effects drove the whole assemblage responses to significant losses in productivity levels. We also found an additive effect of elevated temperature and reduced nutrients on sub-canopy species (i.e., Chondrus crispus), while turfs were only affected by temperature. Our results suggest that under weakening upwelling scenarios, the ability of the macroalgal assemblages to maintain high productivity rates could be seriously affected and predict a shift in community composition with the loss of marine forests. [Objective] The Late Permian was a critical interval in geological history, with dramatic changes in tectonics, paleoclimate, paleo-oceanic environment, volcanic activities, and the biosphere. Reconstruction of the paleogeography, paleoclimate, and paleo-oceanic environment during this interval could provide a more complete picture of the interactions and relationships among different geological factors, as well as their influence on organic matter enrichment and the evolution of the biosphere. [Methods] Organic-rich rock series were widely deposited during this period in the Sichuan Basin of the Upper Yangtze Block, providing insights into the co-evolution of the geosphere and biosphere. To better address the coeval temporal and spatial changes in the paleogeographic settings, paleo-oceanic environment, primary productivity, and organic enrichment, we conducted a detailed sedimentological investigation integrated (major and trace) element contents, organic carbon isotopes and total organic carbon (TOC) contents in the Jianfeng section, located in an intrashelf basin in northeastern Sichuan Basin.[Results] The redox-sensitive trace element data (MoXS, UXS, VXS contents, MoXS/UXS ratios, and MoEF-UEF relationship) show that the redox environment of the Jianfeng section has experienced four intervals (I-IV) . Interval I (0-10.35 m, spanning from the upper part of the Wuchiaping Formation to the lower part of the Dalong Formation) was dominated by an oxic environment during deposition, Interval II (10.35-23.35 m, the middle Dalong Formation) experienced a ferruginous-dominant anoxic condition, Interval III (23.35-27.00 m, the upper Dalong Formation) was mainly a euxinic environment, and Interval IV (27.00-34.05 m, from the top of the Dalong Formation to the bottom of the Changhsing Formation) was dominated by an oxic or suboxic environment. Compared with the Xibeixiang section in the deeper water of the Kaijiang-Liangping trough, the redox environment in the intrashelf basin exhibits spatiotemporal heterogeneity. The nutrient-limiting elements (ZnXS, CuXS, NiXS ) contents demonstrate that primary productivity is high in both intervals II2 and III, coincident with the increasing terrestrial inputs (dedicated by Al, Zr, and Ti contents and K/Al values) . However, the CoxMn and Cd/Mo values indicated that the upwelling currents arose in intervals II2, II3, III, and IV, and the volcanic activities were only frequent in Interval IV, disagreeing with the eutrophication and organic matter enrichment in the middle Dalong Formation. Therefore, the high primary productivity of the Dalong Formation may be principally affected by a large number of terrestrial inputs. Furthermore, the upwelling currents also made contributions to the prosperity of plankton, but the volcanic activities have poor relationships with it. [Conclusions] Combined with the Xibeixiang section in the study area, the formation of euxinic water mass was found to be closely related to the high primary productivity, whereas its spatiotemporal fluctuations were controlled by the sea-level changes, which could drive its upslope incursion in intervals II and III, downslope retreat in the Interval IV, and even demise in the Interval V. In turn, the primary productivity could be further controlled by the upwelling currents particularly on the basinal slope, and terrigenous inputs on the more updipping basinal margin. Major precipitation events from destructive hurricanes can change the hydrodynamics of estuaries. Indeed, water rather than wind was the major destructive force behind Hurricane Harvey, the category 4 storm that stalled over Texas in August 2017. Herein, we present a unique examination of the phytoplankton community as it responded to the changing hydrodynamic conditions in Galveston Bay. We used traditional (primary productivity, pigments, Fluorescence Induction and Relaxation System, pulse-amplitude modulation fluorometer), and modern (Imagining FlowCytobot [IFCB], 16S rRNA, and 18S rRNA gene sequencing) approaches to characterize the phytoplankton community and their physiological response. Phytoplankton communities transitioned from pre-storm estuarine to freshwater species and then began to transition back to an estuarine community with similar but not identical structure to that present before the storm. Further, phytoplankton communities were initially displaced by the flood waters, which lowered biomass and productivity despite the high nutrient concentrations and dissolved inorganic nitrogen to phosphate ratios of ~ 16. We found for cyanobacteria, factors such as time (i.e., sampling event after the storm), temperature (°C), salinity, NH4+ (µM), NO3− (µM), and turbidity (Secchi disk depths and total suspended solids) were the most critical environmental factors that explained the variation in community composition relative to the major eukaryotic groups. Only factors such as time, followed by salinity, and NO3− played a crucial role for eukaryotes, with time having the most impact on diatoms. The results herein provide a greater understanding of the succession and natural variability of phytoplankton species following large flood events in subtropical estuaries, which are predicted to occur more frequently with increasing effects of climate change. Nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen lead to extensive growth of harmful algae in lakes and reservoirs, which results in eutrophication. The driving mechanism of primary productivity change in lakes and reservoirs at a wide spatial and temporal scale remains largely unknown. We establish a water quality database using a stacking machine learning model, including monthly chlorophyll‐a (Chl‐a), total nitrogen (TN) and phosphorus (TP) concentrations in 255 lakes and 332 reservoirs from 1980 to 2018. We find an increase in the number of lakes and reservoirs at risk of algal blooms, with approximately 2.66% exhibiting Chl‐a concentrations exceeding 30 μg L−1 by 2018. Variations in Chl‐a concentrations were not entirely synchronized at the individual and regional levels with TN and TP concentrations, or their stoichiometric ratios, as estimated by a hierarchical linear model spanning 1980 to 2018. Further, we discovered unexpected effects of geographical features (i.e., latitude, longitude, and slope) and meteorological factors (i.e., air temperature) on Chl‐a concentrations in the lakes and reservoirs with higher TP concentrations (>0.041 mg L−1 for lakes and >0.027 mg L−1 for reservoirs), through the use of multiple regression trees and structural equation model analysis. Our findings underscore the importance of (a) implementing flexible nutrient pollution control approaches based on nutrient ecoregions that consider geographical variations, and (b) developing mitigation and adaptation strategies to address the uncertain risks posed by climate change in the prevention and control of eutrophication in lakes and reservoirs. Trace metals (TMs) manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), and aluminium (Al) have important geochemical and biological roles in the ocean. Here, we present full depth profiles of dissolved (d) and particulate Al, Mn, and Co along the latitude of 40 °S in the South Atlantic Ocean from the GEOTRACES GA10 cruises that operated in austral spring 2010 and summer 2011. The region is characterized by enhanced primary productivity and forms a key transition zone between the Southern Ocean and South Atlantic Subtropical Gyre. The mean concentrations of dAl, dCo, and dMn (±standard deviation) were 3.36 ± 2.65 nmol kg−1, 35.3 ± 17.6 pmol kg−1, and 0.624 ± 1.08 nmol kg−1, respectively. Their distributions in surface waters were determined by external sources and complex internal biogeochemical processes. Specifically, surface ocean dCo was controlled by the interplay between phytoplankton uptake, remineralization and external inputs; dMn was likely determined by the formation and photoreduction of Mn-oxides; and dAl was supplied by atmospheric deposition and removed by scavenging onto particles. Fluvial and sedimentary inputs near the Rio de La Plata estuary and benthic sources from the Agulhas Bank resulted in elevated dTM concentrations in near-shore surface waters. These externally sourced dTMs were effectively delivered to the open ocean by offshore diffusion and/or advection, and potentially facilitated enhanced primary productivity along the transect. The distributions of dTMs at depth were predominantly controlled by the mixing of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) and waters of Antarctic origin (e.g., Upper Circumpolar Water (UCDW) and Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW)). The calculated endmember concentrations of dAl and dCo in NADW showed minor decreases in the SASTG following north–south transport, suggesting removal rates of 0.064 nM/year and 0.035–0.075 pM/year, respectively. The endmember concentration of dCo in AABW was maintained at ∼30 pmol kg−1 without evidence for scavenging removal in the Southern Ocean and SASTG (time frame >400 years). The concentrations of dMn in NADW and AABW were between 0.1 and 0.16 nmol kg−1, and any elevated dMn concentrations were ascribed to local external inputs (e.g., from sediments in the Argentine Basin and hydrothermal activity near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge). Hence, four controlling factors (sources, internal cycling, water mass mixing and time) need to be considered when assessing TM distributions in the global ocean, even for TMs that are vulnerable to scavenging removal processes. Because the deep waters formed in high latitude oceans are crucial components of the global thermohaline overturning system, any processes (e.g., glacier melting, upwelling and sinking, and biological activity) that impact the preformed dTM concentrations in high latitude oceans will determine the downstream dTM distributions. Therefore, the sources and sinks of TMs and associated biological activity in high latitude oceans could engender basin to global scale impacts on seawater distributions of Al, Co, and Mn and their stoichiometric relationships with macronutrients, and the global biogeochemical cycles of these scavenged-type TMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seasonal changes in environmental conditions may induce reversible physiological adjustments in organisms. We studied the acclimatization for multiple stressors in energy expenditure and water balance in Galea leucoblephara, a diurnal hystricognath rodent native to South America that experiences significant changes in temperature, precipitation, and food availability among seasons. We conducted a field study in the Monte Desert of Mendoza, Argentina, where we evaluated adult individuals' physiological status during two contrasting seasons in terms of climate and primary productivity. Reduced temperature, rainfall, and primary productivity during winter were associated with a decrease of 70% in basal metabolic rate (BMR), 30% in total evaporative water loss (TEWL), and 9% in body mass (Mb). In contrast, higher water availability, high temperature, and primary productivity during summer, induced significant increases in energy expenditure and evaporative water loss. As expected, the proportion of dietary items consumed by G. leucoblephara varied seasonally, resulting in a more diverse diet during summer. Our results illustrate how G. leucoblephara can cope with high seasonal contrasts in water availability, temperature, and food availability by modifying its physiological performance. The ocean region along the latitude of 40°S in the South Atlantic, characterized by enhanced primary productivity, forms a transition zone between the nutrient replete but iron depleted Southern Ocean, and the nitrate and iron depleted Subtropical Gyre. Here, we present distributions of nutrient-type dissolved and particulate trace metals (dTMs and pTMs) including cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) in the South Atlantic from the GEOTRACES GA10 cruises. Phytoplankton uptake, riverine and atmospheric inputs shaped dTM and pTM concentrations in surface waters (dCd 27.8 ± 36.0 pmol kg−1, n = 222; dCu 0.732 ± 0.429 nmol kg−1, n = 222; dNi 3.38 ± 0.52 nmol kg−1, n = 219; dZn 0.332 ± 0.398 nmol kg−1, n = 214). Subsurface nutrients and dTMs (dCd 563 ± 184 pmol kg−1, n = 335; dCu 1.819 ± 0.773 nmol kg−1, n = 334; dNi 6.19 ± 1.06 nmol kg−1, n = 330; dZn 3.71 ± 2.10 nmol kg−1, n = 333) were controlled by the mixing of Antarctic origin waters and North Atlantic Deep Waters (NADW) with negligible contributions from local remineralization. Dissolved and particulate TMs in the Argentine Basin showed elevated concentrations towards the seafloor because of benthic inputs. Direct hydrothermal inputs of dTMs and pTMs to deep waters were not observed along the transect. The Cd-Cu-Zn-phosphate stoichiometries of Antarctic origin waters were set by a combination of dynamic physical circulation and preferential uptake of Cd, Cu, and Zn relative to phosphate in surface waters because of a dominance by diatoms in the Southern Ocean. Water mass mixing subsequently produced convoluted dCu-P and dZn-P relationships and apparent linear dCd-P and dNi-P relationships in the South Atlantic. More importantly, endmember characteristics of Antarctic waters and NADW are largely fixed in their formation regions in high latitude oceans. Therefore, the highly dynamic high latitude oceans are key regions that supply nutrients and TMs at specific ratios to low latitude oceans via the thermohaline circulation. In order to address lack of data regarding coastal carbon budgets, we estimated the annual metabolic carbon budget of an intertidal rocky reef macroalgal community during emersion. This budget is based on direct in situ measurements during emersion and establishes the seasonal variations of the photosynthetic parameters of such a community. CO2 fluxes were measured hourly to study the response of community gross primary productivity (GPP) to irradiance and the variation of GPP and community respiration (CR) over the emersion period at different times of the year. These were combined together with existing monthly measures of GPP and CR hourly rates to model the variations of these fluxes as a function of irradiance and the tidal cycle throughout an entire calendar year. Daily, monthly and annual values of GPP, CR and net primary productivity (NPP) were calculated with a relatively low sensitivity to any of the parameters used. While GPP fluxes show comparable orders of magnitude to those measured in other systems, higher CR fluxes lead to a heterotrophic system during emersion, both under measured (NPP = −299 gC m−2 year−1) and theoretical irradiances (NPP = −119 gC m−2 year−1). This heterotrophy is directly linked to the light availability, varying according to combined daily, tidal and seasonal cycles, and to temperature at the seasonal scale. Measurements performed in situ at the community scale integrated interactions that are otherwise absent at the individual scale. The global impact of the Youngest Toba Tuff (YTT) supereruption is still heavily debated, ranging from having little effects on climate to significantly affecting modern human evolution. Climate models and proxy records show that the eruption may have caused cooling of the Asian landmass, thus impacting regional climate such as the Indian monsoon system. However, the immediate effect of the eruption on the Indian monsoon has not been indisputably demonstrated in any proxy record. Here, we present a paleo‐primary productivity (PP) record in core SO130‐289KL from the northeastern Arabian Sea based on the coccolithophore species Florisphaera profunda transfer function. Florisphaera profunda decreased from ∼30% before the YTT eruption to ∼8% right after the YTT eruption, which translates to an increase in PP by ∼65% from a long‐term average of ∼200 gC/m2/yr for about 8–19 years after the eruption. The duration was estimated using a new error‐weighted mean age of the YTT eruption (73.9 ± 0.1 ka, 2σ uncertainties) based on recent age estimates from ice cores, radiometric dating, and speleothem records. The elevated PP is most likely linked to the deepening of the surface ocean mixed layer driven by strengthened northeasterly Indian winter monsoon winds. This hypothesis is supported by stable oxygen isotope records from speleothem and ice cores, which show indications of a strengthening of the Indian winter monsoon during times of increased PP. Our results support previous modeling studies and provide unequivocal evidence from a marine record for an Indian monsoon response to the supereruption. Here, we analyzed a unique marine sediment record from the northeastern Arabian Sea that recorded interannual variations of remains of marine phytoplankton called coccolithophores spanning the time of the eruption. We focus on the fossils of the coccolithophore species Florisphaera profunda, a robust proxy for marine primary productivity (PP). The record shows that PP increased for at least 8 years after the eruption, likely due to high nutrient availability related to a deepened ocean surface mixed layer. This deep mixed layer resulted from strengthened northeasterly winds of the Indian winter monsoon which, in turn, were most probably induced by an air pressure gradient formed from a faster cooling of the continents relative to the oceans after the eruption. Our study thus provides a lens into the impact of a supereruption on regional climate and the marine ecosystem through fast interactions of the ocean and the atmosphere. The Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta (Delta) is a case-study of the Anthropocene “great accelerations,” with exponentially increasing temperatures and sea level over time, leading to rapid change in other ecosystem components. In nearly all these interconnected changes and across scales, primary producers play a major role, with diverse effects that mitigate or exacerbate the rapid change induced by climate or other human-driven perturbations. Through this anthropocentric lens, primary producers can be viewed as performing numerous ecosystem services—which ultimately benefit humans—as well as ecosystem disservices, which negatively affect human communities. For example, through carbon sequestration, wetlands can perform ecosystem services of mitigating warming at a global scale and combating relative sea-level rise at a local scale, while generating food that supports regional food webs and fisheries. On the other hand, invasive aquatic vegetation (IAV) can trap sediment before it reaches wetlands, exacerbating local subsidence and relative sea-level rise while incurring great costs to recreation, fishing, and agencies tasked with its control. Effectively managing these ecosystem services and disservices requires understanding how they are connected. For example, wetland restoration often creates opportunities for IAV, which may inhibit sediment deposition on the wetland and out-compete native species. As the Delta science community works toward a more integrative understanding of how different components of the Delta interact as a whole and across scales, the pervasive effects of the ecosystem services and disservices of primary producers serve as foundational knowledge. In this topically themed edition of State of Bay–Delta Science, we review these effects. Individual contributions focus on the historical ecology of the primary productivity of aquatic vegetation, the ecology and control of invasive aquatic vegetation, harmful algal blooms, carbon sequestration and subsidence reversal by wetlands, and remote sensing methods for quantifying the ecosystem services and disservices of Delta primary producers.

Greenlandic fjords, located between the ice sheet and the ocean, are dynamic systems that can sustain highly variable levels of primary productivity and are sensitive to climate change. In our current climate trajectory, meltwater discharge is expected to significantly increase but its long‐term effects on fjord productivity are still poorly constrained. Paleo‐archives can offer valuable insights into long‐term effects. Here, we present two marine sediment core records from Nuup Kangerlua, Southwest Greenland. Our goal is to better understand to what extent, and on what time‐scales, climate fluctuations and associated glacier dynamic changes have impacted fjord productivity over the past ca. 3300 years. Our multiproxy records include diatom fluxes and assemblage composition, sediment biogeochemistry, and grain‐size distribution. Our study reveals that fjord productivity is tightly linked to regional climate variability; relatively higher productivity levels coincided with mild climate periods whereas the climate cooling of the last millennium led to a decrease in productivity. The diatom records suggest that lower productivity is associated with shorter or less intense summer blooms, increased sea‐ice cover and/or a stratified water column. Diatom assemblages demonstrate cold sea‐surface conditions around 1600 CE that might be linked to local advance of glaciers. Cold conditions and decreasing productivity culminated at 1850 CE, when glaciers in the fjord retreated and high glacial meltwater discharge would have altered the fjord hydrography, likely leading to limited nutrient availability. Our long‐term records support the idea that changing climate and cryosphere conditions have a non‐linear impact on the productivity of Greenlandic fjords. The article presents results of using remote sensing images and machine learning to map and assess land potential based on time-series of potential Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR) composites. Land potential here refers to the potential vegetation productivity in the hypothetical absence of short-term anthropogenic influence, such as intensive agriculture and urbanization. Knowledge on this ecological land potential could support the assessment of levels of land degradation as well as restoration potentials. Monthly aggregated FAPAR time-series of three percentiles (0.05, 0.50 and 0.95 probability) at 250 m spatial resolution were derived from the 8-day GLASS FAPAR V6 product for 2000-2021 and used to determine long-term trends in FAPAR, as well as to model potential FAPAR in the absence of human pressure. CCa 3 million training points sampled from 12,500 locations across the globe were overlaid with 68 bio-physical variables representing climate, terrain, landform, and vegetation cover, as well as several variables representing human pressure including: population count, cropland intensity, nightlights and a human footprint index. The training points were used in an ensemble machine learning model that stacks three base learners (extremely randomized trees, gradient descended trees and artificial neural network) using a linear regressor as meta-learner. The potential FAPAR was then projected by removing the impact of urbanization and intensive agriculture in the covariate layers. The results of strict cross-validation show that the global distribution of FAPAR can be explained with an R2 of 0.89, with the most important covariates being growing season length, forest cover indicator and annual precipitation. From this model, a global map of potential monthly FAPAR for the recent year (2021) was produced, and used to predict gaps in actual vs. potential FAPAR. The produced global maps of actual vs. potential FAPAR and long-term trends were each spatially matched with stable and transitional land cover classes. The assessment showed large negative FAPAR gaps (actual lower than potential) for classes: urban, needle-leave deciduous trees, and flooded shrub or herbaceous cover, while strong negative FAPAR trends were found for classes: urban, sparse vegetation and rainfed cropland. On the other hand, classes: irrigated or post-flooded cropland, tree cover mixed leaf type, and broad-leave deciduous showed largely positive trends. The framework allows land managers to assess potential land degradation from two aspects: as an actual declining trend in observed FAPAR and as a difference between actual and potential vegetation FAPAR. The long-term burial of organic carbon in marginal seas plays a critical role in Earth's carbon cycle and climate change. However, the mechanism of organic carbon (OC) burial in the Okinawa Trough (OT) during glacial-interglacial timescales remains unclear. In this study, we analyzed the foraminiferal carbon isotopes, total organic carbon (TOC), and d13C-TOC over the past 200 ka in core Z1 collected in the central OT. We aimed to reveal the history of OC burial in the middle Okinawa Trough during the past 200 ka, and we combined our findings with relevant paleoenvironmental indices to reveal underlying mechanisms. We found reduced surface primary productivity during MIS 6, which may indicate changes in the pathways of the Kuroshio Current (KC). Furthermore, we observed decoupling between high TOC flux and low OC burial during glacial periods. We proposed that the dilution effect caused by the high sedimentation rate and poor OC preservation during the glacial period resulted in the low TOC content. Ventilation of the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) regulated the redox conditions of the intermediate water in the Okinawa Trough. Additionally, the intensified Kuroshio Current during interglacial phases led to water column stratification, creating reducing conditions in the bottom water and facilitating improved OC preservation. Subsequently, the enhanced water column oxygenation resulting from the oxygen carried by the intensified glacial NPIW weakened the burial of OC. Chlorophyll fluorescence-based estimates of primary productivity typically include dark or low-light pre-treatments to relax non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), a process that influences the relationship between PSII photochemistry and fluorescence yields. The time-scales of NPQ relaxation vary significantly between phytoplankton taxa and across environmental conditions, creating uncertainty in field-based productivity measurements derived from fluorescence. To address this practical challenge, we used fast repetition rate fluorometry to characterize NPQ relaxation kinetics in Arctic Ocean phytoplankton assemblages across a range of hydrographic regimes. Applying numerical fits to our data, we derived NPQ relaxation life times, and determined the relative contributions of various quenching components to the total NPQ signature across the different assemblages. Relaxation kinetics were best described as a combination of fast-, intermediate- and slow-relaxing processes, operating on time-scales of seconds, minutes, and hours, respectively. Across sampling locations and depths, total fluorescence quenching was dominated by the intermediate quenching component. Our results demonstrated an average NPQ relaxation life time of 20 ± 1.9 min, with faster relaxation among high light acclimated surface samples relative to lowlight acclimated sub-surface samples. We also used our results to examine the influence of NPQ relaxation on estimates of photosynthetic electron transport rates (ETR), testing the commonly held assumption that NPQ exerts proportional effects on light absorption (PSII functional absorption cross section, σPSII) and photochemical quantum efficiency (FV/FM). This assumption was violated in a number of phytoplankton assemblages that showed a significant decoupling of σPSII and FV/FM during NPQ relaxation, and an associated variability in ETR estimates. Decoupling of σPSII and FV/FM was most prevalent in samples displaying symptoms photoinhibition. Our results provide insights into the mechanisms and kinetics of NPQ in Arctic phytoplankton assemblages, with important implications for the use of FRRF to derive non-invasive, high-resolution estimates of photosynthetic activity in polar marine waters. In order to investigate the effect of primary productivity, organic matter dilution, and preservation on the accumulation of organic matter, geochemical data, and proxies of primary productivity, clastic influx, and redox conditions were obtained for organic-rich shales in the Cambrian Niutitang Formation. The primary productivity (total organic carbon [TOC], Mo, P, Ba, and Babio) and redox (Ni/Co, V/Cr, U/Al, and Th/U) proxies suggest the organic-rich shales were deposited in anoxic-euxinic conditions during periods of high primary productivity. Pyrite in the Niutitang Formation comprises spherical framboids, which also indicate that anoxic bottom waters were present during organic matter deposition. High primary productivity enhanced the organic C flux into the thermocline layer and bottom waters, which lead to the development of anoxic bottom waters owing to O2 consumption by microorganisms and organic matter degradation. The anoxic bottom waters were beneficial for the preservation of organic matter. In addition, Ti/Al ratios correlate well with TOC contents throughout the Niutitang Formation, indicating that clastic input increased the burial rate and prevented organic matter degradation during deposition. Therefore, the accumulation of organic matter in the Niutitang Formation was controlled mainly by primary productivity rather than bottom-water redox conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Late Permian was marked by a series of important geological events and widespread organic‐rich black shale depositions, acting as important unconventional hydrocarbon source rocks. However, the mechanism of organic matter (OM) enrichment throughout this period is still controversial. Based on geochemical data, the marine redox conditions, paleogeographic and hydrographic environment, primary productivity, volcanism, and terrigenous input during the Late Permian in the Lower Yangtze region have been studied from the Putaoling section, Chaohu, to provide new insights into OM accumulation. Five Phases are distinguished based on the TOC and environmental variations. In Phase I, anoxic conditions driven by water restriction enhanced OM preservation. In Phase II, euxinic and cycling hydrological environments were the two most substantial controlling factors for the massive OM deposition. During Phase III, intensified terrestrial input potentially diluted the OM in sediment and the presence of oxygen in bottom water weakened the preservation condition. Phase IV was characterized by a relatively higher abundance of mercury (Hg) and TOC (peak at 16.98 wt%), indicating that enhanced volcanism potentially stimulated higher productivity and a euxinic environment. In Phase V, extremely lean OM was preserved as a result of terrestrial dilutions and decreasing primary productivity. Phases I, II and IV are characterized as the most prominent OM‐rich zones due to the effective interactions of the controlling factors, namely paleogeographic, hydrographic environment, volcanism, and redox conditions. In this communication, we present the prototype of a new simulated in situ lab/on-deck incubator, the light spectrum replicator (LSR), and a method for simulating the measured in situ HOCR light spectrum curves in incubation chambers. We developed this system using AI and genetic algorithms in an iterative fashion to find the best-fitting light spectrum in situ irradiance at different depths. The HOCR light spectrum measured at the depth and time of sampling was processed immediately, so the incubator is in a stable and ready condition by the time the samples inoculated with 14C were placed in sample holders (10 min after sampling). This incubator is intended to provide a reliable, fast, and easy-to-use tool for studying primary production based on the evaluation of the photosynthetic uptake of 14C. This system enables short incubation periods for small samples: we tested incubations of 5 mL samples during 15 min incubation periods. Our initial measurements taken using the prototype revealed a sufficiently good correlation between the on-deck measurements and in situ incubations. The mid‐Proterozoic (∼1.8–0.8 Ga) ocean‐atmosphere system is hypothesized to have experienced fluctuations in redox conditions with transient oxygenation events. One of these happened at ∼1.4 Ga, and it is speculated that this event may link to the emplacement of large igneous province (LIP) at this time. However, direct evidence for this relationship remains to be proved. Here, we report Hg/TOC, P, and trace element concentrations across the ∼1.4 Ga oxygenation event in the Xiamaling Formation of North China. A prominent increase in Hg/TOC is slightly earlier than that of nutrient contents (especially P), pyrite and TOC abundances, suggesting that this distinct oxygenation event was likely the result of LIP activity at ∼1.4 Ga, which increased nutrient and sulfate supply from continental weathering to the ocean, sustaining elevated primary productivity, organic carbon and pyrite burial. This study indicates that LIP weathering could trigger transient oxygenation events during the mid‐Proterozoic. The result shows that a prominent increase in Hg/TOC is clearly recognized in the shales that stratigraphically just underly the layers recording the oxygenation event, suggesting a close causal link between LIP emplacement and the oxygenation event. Accompanied with this Hg/TOC ratio peak, increased nutrient contents (especially P), pyrite and TOC abundances are also observed. Based on these observations, we proposed a model that the Xiamaling oxygenation event was the result of the LIP's emplacement at ∼1.4–1.35 Ga, which increased nutrient and sulfate supply from continental weathering to the ocean, sustaining elevated primary productivity, organic carbon and pyrite burial. Summary: Plant litter is known to affect soil, community, and ecosystem properties. However, we know little about the capacity of litter to modulate grassland responses to climate change.Using a 7‐yr litter removal experiment in a semiarid grassland, here we examined how litter removal interacts with a 2‐yr drought to affect soil environments, plant community composition, and ecosystem function.Litter loss exacerbates the negative impacts of drought on grasslands. Litter removal increased soil temperature but reduced soil moisture and nitrogen mineralization, which substantially increased the negative impacts of drought on primary productivity and the abundance of perennial rhizomatous graminoids. Moreover, complete litter removal shifted plant community composition from grass‐dominated to forb‐dominated and reduced species and functional group asynchrony, resulting in lower ecosystem temporal stability.Our results suggest that ecological processes that lead to reduction in litter, such as burning, grazing, and haying, may render ecosystems more vulnerable and impair the capacity of grasslands to withstand drought events. The island mass effect (IME), an increase in phytoplankton biomass and enhanced environmental biological activity, around islands has been described for many places, but not formally for the Galapagos Islands. The IME is produced when currents collide with islands and seamounts, causing upwelling of nutrient-rich waters, which in turn, produce an increase in primary productivity. Satellite data and information from the XXV-2022 Oceanographic Cruise were used to analyze IME and its effects on primary productivity west of Isabela Island. The results show a significant increase in Chlorophyll-a and a relationship with sea surface temperature, wind direction and wind speed. This increase occurred in the week of seasonal transition from rainy to dry season, when the zonal and meridional winds decrease until they change direction. In the long term, it was observed that this change in wind direction is maintained around the first week of March with interdecadal variability. Further research is needed to quantify the full impact of IME in Galapagos, as well as the interaction with other variables, such as nutrients, and its long-term temporal variability. Identifying controls on soil organic carbon (SOC) storage, and where SOC is most vulnerable to loss, are essential to managing soils for both climate change mitigation and global food security. However, we currently lack a comprehensive understanding of the global drivers of SOC storage, especially with regards to particulate (POC) and mineral‐associated organic carbon (MAOC). To better understand hierarchical controls on POC and MAOC, we applied path analyses to SOC fractions, climate (i.e., mean annual temperature [MAT] and mean annual precipitation minus potential evapotranspiration [MAP‐PET]), carbon (C) input (i.e., net primary production [NPP]), and soil property data synthesized from 72 published studies, along with data we generated from the National Ecological Observatory Network soil pits (n = 901 total observations). To assess the utility of investigating POC and MAOC separately in understanding SOC storage controls, we then compared these results with another path analysis predicting bulk SOC storage. We found that POC storage is negatively related to MAT and soil pH, while MAOC storage is positively related to NPP and MAP‐PET, but negatively related to soil % sand. Our path analysis predicting bulk SOC revealed similar trends but explained less variation in C storage than our POC and MAOC analyses. Given that temperature and pH impose constraints on microbial decomposition, this indicates that POC is primarily controlled by SOC loss processes. In contrast, strong relationships with variables related to plant productivity constraints, moisture, and mineral surface availability for sorption indicate that MAOC is primarily controlled by climate‐driven variations in C inputs to the soil, as well as C stabilization mechanisms. Altogether, these results demonstrate that global POC and MAOC storage are controlled by separate environmental variables, further justifying the need to quantify and model these C fractions separately to assess and forecast the responses of SOC storage to global change. Recent changes in the Arctic sea‐ice are strongly influenced by the recent increase in heat transport from vigorous Atlantic inflows, so‐called Atlantification. This Atlantification can induce physical and ecological changes near the Atlantic gateway. Here, we used the observational data sets and 26 Earth system models to estimate Atlantic water intrusion, and firstly suggest the impact of Atlantification on marine productivity in the Barents Sea in a warming climate, especially on boreal spring. In a warming climate, the heat transport across the Barents Sea Opening (BSO) is projected to be enhanced (45.5 ± 34.9 TW) by the end of the 21st century compared to the present climate. This poleward intrusion of the Atlantic water is likely to increase productivity with the largest increase in spring (70%). In a warming climate, the productivity is enhanced by Atlantification‐induced changes in physical states—ocean temperature, circulations, stratification, and sea‐ice. Based on inter‐model analyses, we estimated that the Atlantification can explain approximately 26% of the productivity changes in the Barents Sea. Thus, Atlantification is critical for future changes in biological productivity and physical states over the Arctic Ocean. The Atlantic water, which is warm, salty, and nutrient‐rich, is also expanding northwards. This is causing the Arctic water to become more like Atlantic water, which is called "Atlantification." Atlantification‐induced physical manifestations and their future changes have been relatively well understood, while influence of the marine productivity still has large uncertainties. In this study, we analyzed the 26 state‐of‐the‐art Earth system models (ESMs) and estimated the future changes caused by the Atlantification, and related productivity changes based on diverse responses of model projections in the Barents Sea where the largest productivity change exists over the Arctic Ocean. We find that the Atlantification‐induced changes in temperature, sea‐ice, and vertical mixing, can enhance the level of productivity in the Barents Sea, especially in boreal spring. Our results suggest that understanding the interactions between the Atlantic water and Arctic systems such as ocean, cryosphere, and biology is critical to projecting future Arctic productivity. The subantarctic zone is an important region in the Southern Ocean with respect to its influence on air‐sea CO2 exchange and the global ocean carbon cycle. However, understanding of the magnitude and drivers of the flux are still being refined. Using observations from the Southern Ocean Time Series (SOTS) station (∼47°S, 142°E) and auxiliary data, we developed a multiple linear regression model to compute the sea surface partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) over the past two decades. The mean amplitude of the pCO2 seasonal cycle between 2004 and 2021 was 44 μatm (range 30–54 μatm). Summer minima ranged from 310 to 370 μatm and winter maxima were near equilibrium with the atmosphere. The non‐thermal (i.e., biological processes and mixing) contribution to the seasonal variability in pCO2 was several times larger than the thermal contribution. The SOTS region acted as a net carbon sink at annual time scales, with mean magnitude of 6.0 mmol m−2 d−1. The positive phase of the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) increased ocean carbon uptake primarily through an increase in wind speed at zero time lag. Increased surface pCO2 was correlated with a positive SAM with a lag of 4 months, mainly due to reduced biological uptake and increased mixing. During the autotrophic season, pCO2 was predominantly impacted by primary productivity, whereas water mass movement, inferred by temperature and salinity anomalies, had a larger impact on the heterotrophic season. In general, mesoscale processes such as eddies and frontal movement impact the local biogeochemical features more than the SAM. Due to the Arctic amplification effect, the Svalbard archipelago is an important area for studying ongoing environmental changes. However, its marine ecosystem is extremely complex. In this study, we analyze modern assemblages of dinoflagellate cysts (dinocysts) and benthic foraminifera from surface sediment samples around Svalbard. We use multivariate statistical analyses to examine relationships between environmental conditions (summer and winter sea surface temperature and salinity, sea-ice cover, etc.) and both microfossil groups to evaluate their use as proxies for reconstructions of the marine environment in the region. Our results show that the most important factor controlling the environment around Svalbard is the Atlantic Water which mostly impacts the western coast, but its influence reaches as far as the eastern coast of Nordaustlandet. However, on a local scale, such factors as the sea-ice cover, the presence of tidewater glaciers, or even the morphology and hydrology of fjords become increasingly important. We found that two dinocyst species, cysts of Polarella glacialis and Echinidinium karaense, can be considered regional winter drift ice indicators. The relationships between environmental parameters and benthic foraminiferal assemblages are much more difficult to interpret. Although statistical analysis shows a correlation of benthic foraminiferal species with various environmental parameters, this correlation might be somewhat coincidental and caused by other factors not analyzed in this study. Nevertheless, the use of two complementary microfossil groups as (paleo)environmental indicators can provide a more comprehensive picture of the environmental conditions.

Iron (Fe) is a crucial trace element in marine ecosystems, playing a vital role in regulating marine primary productivity and driving marine biogeochemical cycling processes. However, understanding seasonal iron variations and the response of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) to coastal waters remains limited. The aim of this study was to find out about the spatial and seasonal variations in iron concentrations and their impact on chlorophyll-a levels in Zhanjiang Bay. We conducted seasonal monitoring of surface seawater for iron in 2019, alongside assessments of terrestrial iron inputs during three precipitation seasons. The monitoring results showed that the iron content in Zhanjiang Bay ranged from 0.83 to 339.2 μg·L−1 with an average of 54.34 ± 75.91 μg·L−1. The annual average iron content in the central bay is higher than that in the bay mouth and inner bay. The iron content in autumn is much higher than that in other seasons, which may be due to the influence of river dredging. Correlation analysis revealed that temperature and pH are the main factors affecting the iron content in Zhanjiang Bay and the spatial distribution of iron is influenced by rainfall, river inputs, and human activities, particularly channel dredging. Iron content and chlorophyll-a were negatively correlated between different seasons, which was more significant with the increase in iron content. This may mean that the increase in iron concentration may inhibit the synthesis of chlorophyll-a, thus affecting primary productivity. We need to carry out more research experiments to verify this hypothesis. This study reveals the spatial and temporal changes in iron in urban coastal waters and its relationship with environmental factors, which is of great significance for understanding the marine biogeochemical cycle of iron in coastal eutrophic waters and specifying effective environmental management strategies.

Lakes on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) serve as both indicators of and safeguards against climate change, playing a crucial role in the aquatic ecosystems of the TP. While considerable attention has been devoted to studying the thermal and dynamic processes of TP lakes, research focusing on their ecological variations has been limited. In this study, we selected Namco, a representative lake on the TP, to investigate its water ecological processes using the AQUATOX lake ecological model. Long-term ecological variations spanning from 1980 to 2020 were analyzed based on lake observations. Our results revealed a consistent increase in water nutrients, particularly total nitrogen (WTN), and total phosphorus (WTP), over the study period. Additionally, the concentrations of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and water gross and net primary production (WGPP and WNPP) exhibited a significant upward trend. Despite the persistent state of poor nutrition in the lake, the ecological conditions improved. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that the concentrations of WGPP, WNPP, and Chl-a were more sensitive to the local climate and hydrology compared to WTN and WTP. A continuously warming climate would heat up the lake water body, further enhancing primary production and improving water quality in the future. This study provides insights for lake limnological and ecological research and can be used to inform water management strategies in high-altitude alpine regions.

Studies on limnology are essential to reservoir management; nevertheless, few are known about the limnological features of the Andean reservoirs in Ecuador. To overcome this limitation in the information, from December 2018 to December 2019, the limnological characteristics of El Labrado and Chanlud reservoirs in the Machángara river basin (Ecuador south) were examined. Using the light/dark bottles technique, the primary productivity (PP) of phytoplankton was studied in conjunction with (1) vertical profiles of oxygen concentrations, water temperature, nitrogen, phosphorus, alkalinity, and heterotrophic bacteria; (2) Secchi disk transparency; and (3) meteorological factors such as wind force, precipitation, and water level. Data indicate that both reservoirs are polymictic, with alkaline waters, low nutrients, and low PP rates. Despite this, a principal component analysis revealed that Chanlud exhibits higher nitrogen, alkalinity, heterotrophic bacteria, and PP values. In two approaches through multiple linear regression analysis, each per reservoir, the PP was explained mainly by water temperature, depth, light, heterotrophic bacteria, and meteorological parameters. The low concentrations of nutrients and the low residency time explain the low PP values. Likewise, the altitudinal factor (i.e., both reservoirs are 3400 m above sea level) and the low human perturbations in surrounding reservoir zones play a crucial role in explaining their poor PP. Notwithstanding the low metabolic rates, clear seasonal trends were observed in both reservoirs; the lowest PP rates occurred during the cold season. To our knowledge, this is the first limnological study of high Andean reservoirs in Ecuador. These findings should be part of Andean reservoir management protocols, contributing significantly to local conservation efforts. Additionally, they could be extrapolated as a frame of reference to similar eco-hydrological systems.

Sea ice algae have a broad salinity tolerance but can experience stress during rapid decreases in salinity that occur with seasonal ice melt and during ice sample melt. This study investigated the impact of salinity on the photophysiological responses of bottom-ice algal communities from two Svalbard fjords (Tempelfjorden and Van Mijenfjorden). To further investigate the impact of salinity alone, and particularly to rapid freshening, the responses of a lab-cultured ice algal community from Van Mijenfjorden were assessed. Photophysiological responses were mainly determined via 14C-based incubations which provided photosynthesis-irradiance curves. Main findings showed that i) the bottom-ice algal community in Tempelfjorden was characterized by lower photosynthetic efficiency and chlorophyll a biomass than the Van Mijenfjorden communities, and ii) a lab-cultured ice algal community from Van Mijenfjorden dominated by pennate diatoms had significantly lower photosynthetic efficiency, maximum photosynthesis and photoacclimation index after a decrease in salinity from 33 to 10. The lower photosynthetic efficiency and chlorophyll a biomass at Tempelfjorden may be attributed to the almost two-fold lower bulk-ice salinity in Tempelfjorden compared to Van Mijenfjorden, which was likely associated with freshwater inputs from the tidewater glacier Tunabreen during sea ice formation. Other factors such as under-ice light intensities, brine volume fraction and brine nutrient concentrations likely also contributed to variability in ice algal response. Furthermore, experimental results indicated that the cultured Van Mijenfjorden community was negatively impacted by a rapid (within 4 to 24 h) reduction in salinity from 33 to 10. We further documented a significant start of recovery of these algae after 168 h. From this work, we surmise that decreases in surface water salinity, for example arising from the intensifying freshening of fjord waters, may only cause temporary changes in ice algal photoacclimation state and thus in chlorophyll a biomass. The Banda and Arafura Sea possesses significant potential for the fisheries and fishing industry in the country. The large pelagic fish production data studied were derived from satellite imagery data in the Banda and Arafura Seas (2002-2022). The data of chlorophyll-a content, sea surface temperature and Photosynthetically Available Radiation (PAR) derived from AQUA MODIS satellite images were used to estimate the value of primary productivity with the Vertically Generalised Production Model (VGPM). The results showed that the biomass of large pelagic fish fluctuated seasonally, with the Banda Sea and Arafura Sea having high average fish biomass values in the eastern season. With the highest fish biomass peak in August and the lowest in December. The high value of fish biomass in the Banda Sea and Arafura Sea is caused by upwelling events where sea surface temperatures are low but chlorophyll is high. in the Arafura Sea the value of fish biomass is higher than the Banda Sea, this is due to the large amount of nutrient input from large rivers in the area. The environment of the Baltic Sea is heavily influenced by human activities. In addition, the region is undergoing significant changes in the face of global climate change. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the state of the environment and greenhouse gas emissions in the region. In 2022, the Programme for the development of the system of climate and environmental monitoring of the Russian seas was launched. For the Baltic Sea, the spatial and temporal scheme of the regional monitoring module has been designed to carry out long-term, regular, and largescale surveys. The satellite monitoring is based on the analysis of radiometer data and includes analyses of the spatial and temporal variability of suspended particulate matter and chlorophyll a concentrations, as well as sea surface temperature. The shipboard monitoring consists of seasonal and monthly surveys. The coastal monitoring is based on data from sensors installed on a 57-m met tower as a permanent climate and environmental monitoring station located on the coast of the south-eastern part of the Baltic Sea (Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia). Studies of stream ecosystem metabolism over decades are rare and focused on responses to a single factor, e.g., nutrient reduction or storms. Numerous studies document that light, temperature, allochthonous inputs, nutrients, and flow affect metabolism. We use measurements spanning ~ 40 years to examine the interplay of all these influences on metabolism in forested and meadow reaches of a rural stream in southeastern Pennsylvania, USA. Measurements made in 1971–1975 used benthic substrata transferred to chambers (Period 1, P1), and ones in 1997–2010 used open system methodology (P2). Metabolism was greater in the Meadow reach both periods. Gross primary productivity (GPP) was driven primarily by light and chlorophyll, and respiration (R) by temperature and inclusion of hyporheic metabolism. Annually, processes were nearly balanced (Forested reach) or dominated by autotrophy (Meadow reach) in P1. Heterotrophy predominated in both reaches in P2, fueled by litter inputs (Forested reach) and fine particulate organic matter from the agricultural watershed (Meadow reach). Storms reduced GPP, R, and chlorophyll in proportion to storm size, but had less influence than other environmental factors. Riparian-zone reforestation of the P1 Meadow reach resulted in incident light and GPP similar to that in the permanent Forested reach within ~ 20 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Forest floor accumulation is a key process that influences ecosystem carbon cycling. Despite evidence suggesting that tree diversity and soil carbon are positively correlated, most soil carbon studies typically omit the response of the forest floor carbon to tree diversity loss.Here, we evaluated how tree species richness affects forest floor mass and how this effect is mediated by litterfall production and forest floor decay rate in a tree diversity experiment in a subtropical forest.We observed that greater tree species richness leads to higher forest floor accumulation at the soil surface through increasing litterfall production – positively linked to functional trait identity (i.e. community‐weighted mean functional trait) rather than functional diversity – and unchanged forest floor decay. Interestingly, structural equation modelling revealed that this lack of overall significant tree species richness effect on forest floor decay rate was due to two indirect and opposite effects cancelling each other out. Indeed, tree species richness increased forest floor decay rate through increasing litterfall production while decreasing forest floor decay rate by increasing litter species richness.Our reports of greater organic matter accumulation in the forest floor in species‐rich forests suggest that tree diversity may have long‐term and important effect on ecosystem carbon cycling and services. Plant density and size — two factors that represent plant survival and growth — are key determinants of yield but have rarely been analysed explicitly in the context of biodiversity–productivity relationships. Here, we derive equations to partition the net, complementarity and selection effects of biodiversity into additive components that reflect diversity‐induced changes in plant density and size. Applications of the new method to empirical datasets reveal contrasting ways in which plant density and size regulate yield in species mixtures. In an annual plant diversity experiment, overyielding is largely explained by selection effects associated with increased size of highly productive plant species. In a tree diversity experiment, the cause of overyielding shifts from enhanced growth in tree size to reduced mortality by complementary use of canopy space during stand development. These results highlight the capability of the new method to resolve crucial, yet understudied, demographic links between biodiversity and productivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Ediacaran – Cambrian transition witnessed dramatic changes in the marine environment that are thought to have strongly influenced biological evolution. Previous studies have linked biological innovations to palaeo‐redox changes and suggested that increased productivity is the primary driver of the marine environment. However, the primary productivity and redox control mechanism still need to be clarified. Here, we present new organic carbon isotopes, total organic carbon contents, major elements, and trace and rare earth elements in drill‐core ZK107 from South China to reveal the continental chemical weathering, primary productivity, and redox control mechanism during the Earliest Cambrian (E‐C). Our studies have shown intense continental weathering, and primary productivity fluctuations that were supported by weathering (CIA, Rb/Al) and productivity (Babio, P) indicators. Additionally, the quantitative reconstructed productivity proxies (PP18, PP21, PP23) indicate a high primary productivity level in the E‐C ocean, surpassing that of the modern oceans. The strengthening of continental weathering mainly causes high primary productivity because it can alter the nutrient supply to the oceans. We suggest that changes in primary productivity closely associated with continental weathering are the leading cause of marine anoxia during the E‐C. This study establish a linkage between the land and marine system during the E‐C, confirming the terrestrial controls on the marine chemical changes and providing new insights into understanding the evolution of the Earth's surface changes during the Ediacaran – Cambrian transition. Studying the accumulation rules of organic matter (OM) in paleo-ocean sediments can not only enhance our understanding of how OM becomes enriched in ancient oceans but also provide guidance for the exploration of shale gas in unconventional shale strata. A breakthrough has been made in shale gas exploration in the early Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation in South China. However, less attention has been paid to the intraplatform basin of the Yangtze Platform, and the factors controlling organic matter enrichment in this special region remain unclear. This study focuses on a continuous drilling core across the full well section of the Qiongzhusi Formation in the intraplatform basin of the Yangtze Platform. Through the comprehensive analysis of total organic carbon (TOC), major and trace elements, and Mo isotopes, this study investigates the controlling factors for OM enrichment with δ98/95Mo ratios utilized to identify the existence of euxinic bottom water. The examined 240 m long core can be divided into four units, where the TOC values of the lower Units 1 and 2 (0.2–5.0 wt.%) average higher than the upper Units 3 and 4 (0.2–2.5 wt.%). Redox indicators (U/Th, Ni/Co, EF(Mo)—EF(U)) indicate an increasing oxidation of bottom waters from the bottom upwards. δ98/95Mo data further confirm the presence of weakly euxinic conditions in Units 1 and 2, addressing the ongoing controversy surrounding bottom water redox environments. Primary productivity indicators (Ni/Al, Cu/Al) suggest a relatively low average productivity level within the intraplatform basin. The upwelling indicators EF(Co) * EF(Mn) of different profiles in the Yangtze Platform suggest that low productivity within the intraplatform basin can be mainly attributed to the absence of upwelling. Consequently, this study proposes an organic matter enrichment mechanism for the Qiongzhusi Formation in the intraplatform basin, which emphasizes the significance of the redox environment in the formation of high-quality hydrocarbon source rocks in restricted environments that lack upwelling, setting it apart from the deep ocean. Grasslands are expected to experience extreme climatic events such as extreme drought due to rising global temperatures. However, we still lack evidence of how extreme drought influence soil organic carbon (SOC) content in grassland ecosystems. We experimentally imposed extreme drought in two ways – chronic drought (66 % reduction in precipitation from May to August) and intense drought (100 % reduction in precipitation from June to July) to measure the effects of these two drought types on (SOC) content across six grassland sites that spanning desert steppe, typical steppe and meadow steppe in northern China. The experiment followed a randomized complete block design with six replicates of each treatment at each site. Our results showed that both chronic and intense drought decreased SOC content in the topsoil (0–10 cm) and the loss was higher in arid grasslands (desert steppe and typical steppe). Chronic drought decreased SOC content more than intense drought, with the effect again being strongest in arid grasslands. Furthermore, the response of SOC content to extreme drought was linked with the response of net primary productivity. Specifically, the response of SOC content was negatively correlated with drought sensitivity of above-ground net primary productivity (ANPP) but positively correlated with drought sensitivity of belowground NPP (BNPP). Overall, our results suggest that shifts in grassland SOC content with future drought will depend on the types of drought as well as the productivity responses and local climatic conditions such as precipitation, temperature, and aridity. The differential extreme drought impacts described here may facilitate predictions of climate change impacts on ecosystem carbon cycling.

Abstract The mid‐Proterozoic (∼1.8–0.8 Ga) ocean‐atmosphere system is hypothesized to have experienced fluctuations in redox conditions with transient oxygenation events. One of these happened at ∼1.4 Ga, and it is speculated that this event may link to the emplacement of large igneous province (LIP) at this time. However, direct evidence for this relationship remains to be proved. Here, we report Hg/TOC, P, and trace element concentrations across the ∼1.4 Ga oxygenation event in the Xiamaling Formation of North China. A prominent increase in Hg/TOC is slightly earlier than that of nutrient contents (especially P), pyrite and TOC abundances, suggesting that this distinct oxygenation event was likely the result of LIP activity at ∼1.4 Ga, which increased nutrient and sulfate supply from continental weathering to the ocean, sustaining elevated primary productivity, organic carbon and pyrite burial. This study indicates that LIP weathering could trigger transient oxygenation events during the mid‐Proterozoic.

Abstract Recent changes in the Arctic sea‐ice are strongly influenced by the recent increase in heat transport from vigorous Atlantic inflows, so‐called Atlantification. This Atlantification can induce physical and ecological changes near the Atlantic gateway. Here, we used the observational data sets and 26 Earth system models to estimate Atlantic water intrusion, and firstly suggest the impact of Atlantification on marine productivity in the Barents Sea in a warming climate, especially on boreal spring. In a warming climate, the heat transport across the Barents Sea Opening (BSO) is projected to be enhanced (45.5 ± 34.9 TW) by the end of the 21st century compared to the present climate. This poleward intrusion of the Atlantic water is likely to increase productivity with the largest increase in spring (70%). In a warming climate, the productivity is enhanced by Atlantification‐induced changes in physical states—ocean temperature, circulations, stratification, and sea‐ice. Based on inter‐model analyses, we estimated that the Atlantification can explain approximately 26% of the productivity changes in the Barents Sea. Thus, Atlantification is critical for future changes in biological productivity and physical states over the Arctic Ocean.
