This thesis is divided into three parts, each one focuses on a different problem related to the study of the Langevin process, described at each time by its position and velocity vectors. We consider here an arbitrary dimension and for the purpose of this work, different tools, probabilistic tools as well as more analytic tools, are combined.The first part focuses on the extension of certain results statisfied in the parabolic theory on smooth bounded domains to the degenerate case of the kinetic Fokker-Planck operator on a domain D, only bounded with respect to its position coordinates. We obtain in this part the existence of a unique classical solution to the kinetic Fokker-Planck equation on a domain D with initial conditions and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. We also obtain a Harnack inequality as well as a Maximum principle associated to the kinetic Fokker-Planck operator. Finally, we obtain a compactness result on the set of bounded continuous functions of the semigroup of the Langevin process absorbed at the boundary of D.The results prove to be useful in the second part to prove the existence of a unique quasi-stationary distribution (QSD) for the Langevin process on the domain D. We also obtain a weak convergence of the law of the Langevin process conditioned to stay in D during [0,t], when t goes to infinity, towards its QSD. We also consider the obtained QSD and explicit its weak limit when the friction pramater in the equation satisfied by the Langevin process goes to infinity.Finally, we consider in the last part a Markov chain obtained from the successive entry and exit points of a domain for the Langevin process. Nous aurons alors également une convergence de la loi du processus conditionné à rester dans D durant [0,t], lorsque t tend vers l’infini., vers la DQS. Nous étudierons également la DQS obtenue et expliciterons son comportement limite lorsque le paramètre de friction dans l’équation de Langevin tend vers l’infini. Finalement, nous considérerons dans la dernière partie une chaîne de Markov construite à partir des entrées/sorties successives du processus de Langevin dans par un domaine. Nous étudierons alors la stationnarité de la chaîne de Markov obtenue

We study ageing of materials at a microstructural level. In particular, defects such as vacancies, interstitials and solute atoms are described by a model called Cluster Dynamics (CD), which characterize the evolution of the concentrations of such defects, on period of times as long as decades. CD is a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), which might contain up to hundred of billions of equations. Therefore, classical methods used for solving system of ODEs are not suited in term of efficiency. We first show that CD is well-posed and that physical properties such as the conservation of matter and the preservation of the sign of the solution are verified. We also study an approximation of CD, namely the Fokker–Planck approximation, which is a partial differential equation. We quantify the error between CD and its approximation. We then introduce an algorithm for simulating CD. The algorithm is based on a splitting of the dynamics and couples a deterministic and a stochastic approach of CD. The stochastic approach interprets directly CD as a jump process or its approximation as a Langevin process. The aim is to reduce the number of equations to solve, hence reducing the computation time. We finally apply this algorithm to physical models. The interest of this approach is validated on complex models. Moreover, we show that CD can be efficiently improved thanks to the versatility of the algorithm., Cette thèse s’intéresse au vieillissement des métaux au niveau microstructural. On étudie en particulier les défauts (amas de lacunes, interstitiels ou solutés) via un modèle de dynamique d’amas (DA), qui permet de prédire l’évolution des concentrations de défauts sur des temps longs (plusieurs dizaines d’années). Ce modèle est décrit par un système d’équations différentielles ordinaires (EDOs) de très grande taille, pouvant excéder la centaine de milliards d’équations. Les méthodes numériques classiques de simulation d’EDOs ne sont alors pas efficaces pour de tels systèmes. On montre dans un premier temps que la DA est bien posée et qu’elle vérifie certaines bonnes propriétés physiques comme la conservation de la quantité de matière et la positivité de la solution. On s’intéresse également à une approximation de la DA, qui prend la forme d’une équation aux dérivées partielles, de type Fokker–Planck. On caractérise en particulier l’erreur d’approximation entre la DA et cette approximation. Dans un second temps, on introduit un algorithme de simulation de la DA. Cet algorithme est basé sur un splitting de la dynamique ainsi que sur une interpretation probabiliste des équations de la DA (sous la forme d’un processus de saut) ou de son approximation de Fokker–Planck (sous la forme d’un processus de Langevin). Le but est de réduire le nombre d’équations à résoudre et d’accélérer par conséquent les simulations. On utilise enfin cet algorithme de simulation à différents modèles physiques. On confirme l’intérêt de ce nouvel algorithme pour des modèles complexes. On montre également que cet algorithme permet d’enrichir le modèle de dynamique d’amas à moindre coût.

This thesis proposes an encounter between a stochastic object, the Langevin process, that is the integral of the Brownian motion, and a differential equation, the ''second order reflection'', which, to my knowledge, has been studied until now almost exclusively in a deterministic framework. Historically, the Langevin process was a competing model of the Brownian motion for the description of the erratic trajectories of particles such as the ones observed by Brown. In the same way, the second order reflected Langevin processes are a competing model of reflected Brownian motions, which should always be understood as first order reflected Brownian motions, according to our terminology. The Langevin process and the second order reflected Langevin processes do not pretend to vie with the Brownian motion and the reflected Brownian motion for their influence and their range of applications in various domains. They still pretend to be a more relevant physical model. Besides, for the deterministic second order reflection, when the force has a strongly oscillating behavior, the differential equation has generically several solutions. When a Langevin process is reflected, we should consider the stochastic differential equation, when the force is a white noise... We will show nonetheless the existence of a unique solution, in a weak sense. This result is in sharp contrast with the non-uniqueness results in the deterministic case. This thesis has four chapters. The first one is a long introduction to the subject, written in French in a discursive style. The other three ones are published or still unpublished articles I wrote during my thesis, written in English. In the first chapter I start with the description of the old and recent historical context motivating the study. On the one hand I introduce second order reflection. On the other hand I introduce the Langevin process and its excursions, recalling some results that we will use later on. Then I give an overview of various notions and tools that we will need. I mean, firstly, in addition to the famous Itô excursion measure of a Markov process, the Pitman excursion measure of a stationary process. I mean, next, the h-transforms principle, in the sense of Doob, used to define conditioned Markov processes. Finally I give a detailed abstract, in French, of the three following chapters. The second chapter contains, first, an introduction to the stationary Langevin process, then a study of its Pitman excursion measure. This work is applied to the study of the Langevin process reflected on a totally inelastic boundary. The third chapter starts the study of the Langevin process reflected on a partially elastic boundary. We highlight the existence of two clearly distinct regimes, according to the value of the elasticity coefficient of the reflection, compared to the critical value c~0.163 . In the supercritical and critical regimes, the main difficulty is related to the case when the process starts from 0 with zero speed. We show that the process stays uniquely defined. The fourth chapter deals with the more difficult subcritical regime. In particular, whatever the initial condition, after a finite time the process will be at zero with zero speed. We still show the existence of a unique reflected process, described this time via its Itô excursion measure., Cette thèse propose une rencontre entre un objet stochastique, le processus de Langevin, c'est-à-dire l'intégrale du mouvement brownien, et une équation différentielle, celle du rebond ''au second ordre'', laquelle, à ma connaissance, a été étudiée jusqu'ici presque exclusivement dans un cadre déterministe. Historiquement, le processus de Langevin était un modèle concurrent du mouvement brownien pour décrire les trajectoires erratiques de particules comme celles observées par Brown. Au même titre, les processus de Langevin réfléchis au second ordre sont un modèle concurrent des mouvements browniens réfléchis, lesquels sont toujours réfléchis au premier ordre, selon notre terminologie. Si le processus de Langevin - respectivement le processus de Langevin réfléchi au second ordre - ne prétend pas rivaliser avec le mouvement brownien -- respectivement le mouvement brownien réfléchi -- pour ce qui est de son rayonnement et de son champ d'applications dans des domaines variés, il se prétend néanmoins être un modèle physique plus pertinent. Par ailleurs, pour la réflexion au second ordre déterministe, lorsque la force a un caractère fortement oscillant, l'équation différentielle admet, de manière assez générique, plusieurs solutions. Lorsque c'est un processus de Langevin qui est réfléchi, nous devons considérer l'équation différentielle, stochastique maintenant, lorsque la force est un bruit blanc... Nos prouverons néanmoins toujours l'existence d'une unique solution, au sens faible. Ces résultats contrastent fortement avec les résultats de non-unicité pour l'équation déterministe. Cette thèse s'articule autour de quatre chapitres. Le premier est une large partie introductrice, rédigée en français, dans un style discursif. Les trois suivants sont, tels quels, les articles que j'ai écrits (en anglais) au cours de cette thèse, publiés ou en voie de publication. Dans le premier chapitre, je commence par décrire le contexte historique, ancien comme récent, motivant cette étude. J'introduis d'une part la réflexion au second ordre, d'autre part le processus de Langevin et en particulier ses excursions, rappelant des résultats connus auxquels nous ferons appel. Je donne alors un aperçu de plusieurs notions et outils techniques que nous utiliserons. Il s'agit d'abord, en plus de la célèbre mesure d'excursion d'Itô d'un processus markovien, de la mesure d'excursion de Pitman d'un processus stationnaire. Il s'agit ensuite du principe des h-transformées, au sens de Doob, utilisées pour définir des processus de Markov conditionnés. Enfin, je résume en détail (et en français) les trois chapitres suivants. Le deuxième chapitre comporte d'abord une introduction au processus de Langevin stationnaire, puis une étude de sa mesure d'excursion de Pitman. Ce travail est alors appliqué à l'étude du processus de Langevin réfléchi sur une barrière totalement inélastique. Le troisième chapitre commence l'étude du processus de Langevin réfléchi sur une barrière partiellement élastique. Nous mettons en évidence l'existence de deux régimes bien distincts, selon la valeur du coefficient d'élasticité de la réflexion, comparée à la valeur critique c~0,163. En régime surcritique et critique, la principale difficulté est liée au cas où le processus réfléchi part de zéro avec vitesse nulle. Nous montrons que le processus reste alors bien défini de manière unique. Le quatrième chapitre s'attaque au régime sous-critique, plus difficile. En particulier, quelle que soit la condition initiale, en un temps fini le processus se retrouvera en 0 avec vitesse nulle. Nous montrons encore l'existence d'un unique processus réfléchi, décrit cette fois-ci via sa mesure d'excursion d'Itô.
