PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this review, we discuss the status of novel radiation shielding and other methods to reduce radiation exposure and its associated health risks within the CCL. RECENT FINDINGS: There are many devices on the market each with its unique advantages and inherent flaws. Several are available for widespread use with promising data, while others still in development. The field of percutaneous transcatheter interventions includes complex procedures often involving significant radiation exposure. Increased radiation exposes the proceduralist and CCL staff to potential harm from both direct effects of radiation but also from the ergonomic consequences of daily use of heavy personal protective equipment. Here we discuss several innovative efforts to reduce both radiation exposure and orthopedic injury within the CCL that are available, leading to a safer daily routine in a lead [apron]-free environment.

Background: Suicide-related presentations to pediatric emergency departments (PED) have increased in recent years. PED providers have the opportunity to reduce suicide risk by counseling on restricting access to lethal means. Supplementing lethal means counseling (LMC) with safety device distribution is effective in improving home safety practices. Data on PED-based LMC in high-risk patient populations is limited. The objective of this study was to determine if caregivers of children presenting to PED for mental health evaluation were more likely to secure all household firearms if given cable-style gun locks in addition to LMC. Methods: In this randomized controlled trial, caregivers completed a survey regarding storage practices of firearms and medication in the home. Participants were randomized to receive LMC (control) or LMC plus 2 cable-style gun locks (intervention). Follow-up survey was distributed 1 month after encounter. Primary outcome was proportion of households reporting all household firearms secured at follow-up. Secondary outcomes included: removal of lethal means from the home, purchase of additional safety devices, use of PED-provided locks (intervention only), and acceptability of PED-based LMC. Results: Two hundred participants were enrolled and randomized. Comparable portions of study groups completed follow-up surveys. Control and intervention arms had similar proportions of households reporting all firearms secured at baseline (89.9% vs. 82.2%, p = 0.209) and follow-up (97.1% vs. 98.5%, p = 0.96), respectively. Other safety behaviors such as removal of firearms (17.6% vs. 11.8%, p = 0.732), removal of medication (19.1% vs. 13.2%, p = 0.361), and purchase of additional safety devices (66.2% vs. 61.8%, p = 0.721) were also alike between the two groups. Both groups held favorable views of PED-based counseling. Within the intervention group, 70% reported use of provided locks. Preference for a different style of securement device was the most cited reason among those not using PED-provided locks. Conclusions: PED-based LMC is a favorably-viewed, effective tool for improving home safety practices in families of high-risk children. Provision of cable-style gun locks did not improve rate of firearm securement compared LMC alone—likely due to high baseline rates of firearm securement and preference for different style of lock among non-utilizers. Thermal protective performance of protective clothing is greatly affected by structural parameters of fabric, air gap, and orientation of testing. This paper used Box-Behnken design experimental design to see the influence of pick density of shell (outer) layer, air gap, and orientation of test on thermal protective performance in terms of protection time. The testing was done at constant radiant heat flux. Thermal protective performance was measured in terms of second degree burn time using Stoll's curve. The model showed F value of 72.98 and p-value 0.0001 which shows that model was significant. It was also found that there was significant effect of pick density, air gap, and orientation angle on thermal protective performance. There was positive effect of pick density and air gap but negative effect of orientation angle. This was also observed that effect of pick density was more when air gap increases. The pursuit of materials that offer both wear comfort and protection for functional and protective clothing has led to the exploration of weft-knitted spacer structures. Traditional cushioning materials such as spacer fabrics and laminated foam often suffer from deformation under compression stresses, thus compromising their protective properties. This study investigates the enhancement of the force absorption, stress–strain, and thermal properties of weft-knitted spacer fabrics with inlays. Surface yarns with superior stretchability and thermal properties are used and combined with elastic yarns in various patterns to fabricate nine different inlay samples. The mechanical and thermal properties of these samples are systematically analyzed, including their compression, stretchability, thermal comfort, and surface properties. The results show that the inlay spacer fabric exhibits superior compression properties and thermal conductivity compared to traditional laminated foam and spacer fabrics while maintaining stretchability, thus providing better performance than traditional fabrics for protective clothing and wearable cushioning products. This study further confirms that the type of inlay yarn and inlay structure are crucial factors that significantly influence the thermal, tensile, and compressive properties of the fabric. This research provides valuable insights into the design and development of advanced textile structures to improve wear comfort and protection in close-fitting apparel applications. Background: Immobilization in the intensive care unit can lead to pressure injuries and plantar flexion contractures. Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of heel protectors applied for the prevention of heel pressure injuries and plantar flexion contractures in intensive care units. Methods: This study was conducted as a randomized controlled trial in two adult intensive care units of a teaching and research hospital. The study sample consisted of 84 patients admitted to intensive care units between January 2022 and December 2022. Patients who had been in the intensive care unit for at least 5 days, scored 16 or less on the Braden Pressure Ulcer Risk Assessment Scale and scored 4 or more on the Ramsey Sedation Scale, were included in the study. Heel protector boots were applied to the heels of the patients in the intervention group, while standard positioning with a pillow and ROM exercises were continued in the control group. A sociodemographic data form, the Ramsey Sedation Scale and the Braden Pressure Ulcer Risk Assessment Scale were used to collect data. While pressure injuries were evaluated with the International NPUAP‐EPUAP Pressure Ulcer Classification System, goniometric measurements were made to evaluate joint ROM. Results: In the intervention group, heel pressure injuries did not develop during the study, whereas five patients in the control group developed heel pressure injuries. The risk of pressure injury development that was seen in the control group was 1.7 times higher compared with the risk for the intervention group (log 95% CI: 0.91–2.59). There were significant differences between the right foot (99%; F = 99.229; p =.000) and left foot (99%; F = 100.519; p =.000) in range of motion measurement values of the patients in the intervention group according to the measurement times. According to the results of the multiple comparison test (Bonferroni) performed to determine the range of motion measurement periods showing significant differences, it was observed that each measurement for both feet yielded lower results than the previous measurement (seven measurements from day 1 to day 13). Conclusion: The use of heel protector boots was found to be effective in preventing the development of heel pressure injuries and plantar flexion contractures in intensive care unit patients. Relevance for Clinical Practice: This study provides evidence that intensive care nurses can use heel protector boots to prevent the development of heel pressure injuries and plantar flexion contractures. In this study, a thorough investigation of human sweating behavior was conducted to ensure an accurate evaluation of the thermal protection performance of garments, addressing the lack of existing standardized methods. Three fabrics were compared at different sweating rates under radiant exposure, focusing on exploring heat and mass transfer mechanisms using the traditional pre-wetting method and the innovative continuous sweating method. It was found that the pre-wetting method was effective in situations where fabrics experienced transient moisture absorption, whereas the continuous sweating method excelled in scenarios requiring continuous moisture supply before saturation and was used to estimate liquid moisture transfer. In particular, for materials with low hygroscopicity, the pre-wetting method resulted in 86.24 kJ/m2 more absorbed thermal energy at the skin surface compared with the continuous sweating method, with a sweat rate of 10 μL/min/cm2, highlighting the tendency of the pre-wetting method to overestimate the thermal protective performance. Conversely, for fabrics with high hygroscopicity and testing with high sweat rate, a 32.81% reduction in absorbed thermal energy on the skin surface was observed when the continuous sweating method was used in place of the pre-wetting method, significantly reducing operational risks. This study provides valuable guidance in selecting appropriate sweat simulation methods to evaluate the thermal protection performance based on specific environmental conditions, and provides critical insights for further studies on heat and moisture transfer. Airbag vests (AV) are increasingly popular in equestrian sports. The efficacy of AV in protecting against serious injury has not been adequately analyzed, nor have product testing standards been established. This study provides an overview of current research to understand AV efficacy and future areas of improvement. A systematic review applying the PRISMA framework, NIH Study Quality Assessment, and CEBM Level of Evidence was conducted. Employing variations of "equestrian sport," "powered two-wheeled vehicle," "thoracic injury," "chest deflection," "airbag vest," and "safety vest," 18 articles were identified for data collection from three recognized research databases and citation searching. In laboratory settings, the ability of AV to protect against thoracic injuries was variable based on concurrent foam-based safety vest (SV) usage, impact speed, and impact mechanism. Studies that examined equestrian falls with AV found an association with increased injury rates and risk. SVs were shown to provide inconclusive efficacy in protecting against injuries in experimental and cohort studies. Protective capabilities depend on material, temperature, and impact mechanism. Further limiting use, equestrians reported not wearing, or incorrectly wearing SV due to unknown benefits, low comfort, and ill fit. In equestrian sports, based on published literature to date, AV have not been associated with a reduction in injury. AV appear to be associated with an increase in the risk of serious or fatal injuries in certain settings. In order to improve the user experience of protective clothing for healthcare workers and reduce the design blindness and subjectivity of developers, we propose a research methodology that combines the Kano model, QFD quality function deployment, and PUGH decision-making scheme to develop conceptual solutions for medical protective clothing design. Firstly, we use the Kano model to identify the user requirements of healthcare workers and construct a hierarchy of functional requirements for protective clothing. Secondly, we use the QFD method to weigh the protective clothing design elements, convert user requirements into design elements, establish a relationship matrix between user requirements and design elements, and generate four conceptual design solutions based on the results. Finally, we use the PUGH decision-making method to filter and select the best concept solution for protective clothing design, and validate the design evaluation. Our results show that the protective clothing solutions designed using the combined Kano-QFD-PUGH system approach have a higher level of satisfaction compared to traditional protective clothing design. This method accurately explores the mapping relationship between user requirements and design functional elements and can be used as a general reliability design method. It helps to improve the development efficiency of designers and the decision-making role for design concept solution preference. Overall, our research methodology provides a comprehensive approach to developing medical protective clothing, which can be useful for designers and decision-makers in the healthcare industry. Firefighters rely on their protective clothing as a second skin to perform their job. In the middle of this multilayered protective garment, the moisture barrier plays a vital role in preventing liquids to enter while allowing perspiration to escape. This research delves into the impact of accelerated ultraviolet (UV) aging on the performance of firefighter protective clothing moisture barriers, focusing on tear force retention, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), and wetting via apparent contact angle. Changes in the tearing behavior and reductions in the tear force and tearing distance were observed after aging. Additionally, a reduction in WVTR was found for all the moisture barriers, due to pore closure in the ePTFE/FR PU membrane. In terms of water repellency, the base fabric side of one moisture barrier experienced a transition from hydrophobic to superhydrophilic potentially due to the degradation of the water‐repellent finish. The investigation also revealed that, due to the screening effect by the outer shell fabric, only a low percentage of UV radiation received by the turnout gear, less than 2% in the UVA range, may reach the moisture barrier. In order to prepare flexible thermal protection aerogel materials, using dimethyldimethoxysilane (DMDMS) and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) as co-precursors, isocyanate-propyltrimethoxysilane (CFS-006) was added to the co-precursor as a coupling agent, and resorcinol and formaldehyde were added to the sol solution to prepare a phenolic silicone hybrid aerogel (FAS) by the sol–gel method. The prepared FAS aerogel had no phase separation problem, the density was only 0.118 g/cm3, the hydrophobic angle reached 155.3°, and it had certain flexibility. It could be compressed to 70% and still be restored to its original state. The FAS aerogel also had a low thermal conductivity of 0.0318 W/(m·K) and good high temperature insulation. The introduction of phenolic groups improved thermal stability; Tmax increased to 643.7 °C, and the residual carbon rate was 24.5%. Firefighters' protective clothing rely on moisture barriers to safeguard against liquid ingress while enabling sweat evaporation for comfort and safety. However, these moisture barriers can degrade over time, jeopardizing firefighters' safety. Existing evaluation methods, primarily visual inspection, are inadequate for assessing moisture barrier integrity in service. This study examines the effect of accelerated hydrothermal aging on the tear force, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), and apparent contact angle in three moisture barrier models used in firefighter protective clothing. The moisture barriers studied varied in composition, structure, and base fabric fiber content. Results revealed that moisture barriers' responses to aging are influenced by factors, such as fabric structure, adhesive configuration, finish, and the presence of additional coatings. The hardening of the adhesive layer between the ePTFE membrane and the base fabric was observed in two of the moisture barriers, leading to a slight tear force reduction. Two of the moisture barriers also experienced crack and pit formation on the membrane side, which affected the WVTR. The water‐repellent finish on the fabric side degraded in one moisture barrier. Understanding these complex behaviors is essential for predicting the long‐term moisture barrier performance and enhancing firefighter safety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By 2030, one in six people worldwide will be at least 60 years old, with associated sensorimotor changes that complicate daily activities. Aging suits simulate these conditions for younger individuals to enhance their empathy and understanding of older adults' challenges. Research on aging suits has recently increased, withevidence that these suits impair younger adults' motor performance; but, for a greater understanding of the motorchanges induced by aging suits, and, to identify any factors that may modify them, more research is needed. In this research, we explored how the presentation of the suit and the wearer's physical activity level affected motor performance. We divided 95 younger adults into two groups: (a) one informed about the suit's aging properties (aging suit group); and (b) one in which participants were told that it was a posture training suit (posture training group). Each group was further divided into low and high physical activity levels by a median-split method. Participants completed two fine motor tasks (i.e., placing and building bricks) and two gross motor tasks (i.e., heel-to-toe walking and figure-of-eight walking/running) with and without the suit. The aging suit significantly affected motor performance on all tasks, but participants aware that it was an aging suit performed worse on the figure-of-eight walking/running task than participants who thought it was a posture training suit. In addition, for the same motor task, the groups engaged in low physical activity were more affected by wearing the suit than those engaged in high physical activity. Thus, how aging suits are presented and the general activity level of wearers significantly influenced the aging suits' effects on motor performance. The article discusses the exhibition "Fashion Forward: Disruption through Design" held at the Tūhura Otago Museum in Ōtepoti Dunedin, Aotearoa New Zealand from March 26 to October 17, 2021. The exhibition aimed to celebrate the iD Dunedin Fashion show and explore the connections between contemporary and historic fashion. It featured garments from emerging designers from around the world, as well as pieces from the museum's collection. The exhibition was organized into sections based on themes such as escapism, gender, illusion, reinterpretation, sculpture, transformation, and wellbeing. Ice hockey is a fast-paced sport with a high incidence of collisions between players. Shoulder checks are especially common, accounting for a large portion of injuries including concussions. The forces generated during these collisions depend on the inertial and viscoelastic characteristics of the impacting bodies. Furthermore, the effect of shoulder pads in reducing peak force depends on the baseline (unpadded) properties of the shoulder. We conducted experiments with nine men's ice hockey players (aged 19–26) to measure their effective shoulder stiffness, damping and mass during the impact stage of a shoulder check. Participants delivered a style of check commonly observed in men's university ice hockey, involving lateral impact to the deltoid region, with the shoulder brought stationary by the collision. The effective stiffness and damping coefficient of the shoulder averaged 12.8 kN/m and 377 N-s/m at 550 N, and the effective mass averaged 47% of total body mass. The damping coefficient and stiffness increased with increasing force, but there was no significant difference in the damping coefficient above 350 N. Our results provide new evidence on the dynamics of shoulder checks in ice hockey, as a starting point for designing test systems for evaluating and improving the protective value of shoulder pads. Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze how farmworkers are represented in stock photos available in commercial libraries for use in agricultural health and safety education materials. Methods: We searched for images in five commercial stock photo libraries using the terms "farmworkers" and "women farmworkers" in April 2022. We used quantitative content analysis. We coded each image for containing a visible face, age, gender, skin tone, work activity, mechanization, presence of hazards, technology use, and protective equipment/clothing after establishing inter-coder reliability. We used descriptive statistics to characterize the available stock photos. Results: We identified stock photos (n = 127) in three databases (Adobe Stock Images, Canva, and Getty Images). Two databases (Microsoft Office Image Library and Pixabay) had no relevant images at the time of the search. Only half of the photos analyzed contained a face. Light skin tones and young or middle-aged adults were more common. A majority of farming activities represented in photos were manual tasks (e.g., harvesting) with few depictions of equipment, hazards, and protective equipment/clothing. Conclusions: Health and safety professionals tasked with developing materials for education in agricultural settings face a severe lack of imagery pertinent to the realistic conditions of farmworkers in the United States. In the databases we reviewed, photos displaying human faces, photos showing a range of skin tones and ages, and photos displaying an array of different farm hazards are likely not sufficient for material development. Health and safety professionals may benefit from sharing photos from their own work with other professionals and allocating resources for professional photo shoots in their material development projects. To ensure the safety of medical personnel in healthcare organizations, radiation-shielding materials like protective clothing are used to protect against low-dose radiation, such as scattered rays. The extremities, particularly the hands, are the most exposed to radiation. New materials that can be directly coated onto the skin would be more cost-effective, efficient, and convenient than gloves. We developed protective creams using eco-friendly shielding materials, including barium sulfate, bismuth oxide, and ytterbium oxide, to avoid harmful effects of heavy metals like lead, and tested their skin-protective effects. Particularly, the radiation-shielding effect of ytterbium oxide was compared with that of the other materials. As shielding material dispersion and layer thickness greatly affect the efficacy of radiation-shielding creams, we assessed dispersion in terms of the weight percentage (wt%). The effective radiation energy was reduced by 20% with a 1.0-mm increase in cream thickness. Ytterbium oxide had a higher radiation-shielding rate than the other two materials. A 28% difference in protective effect was observed with varying wt%, and the 45 wt% cream at 63.4 keV radiation achieved a 61.3% reduction rate. Higher content led to a more stable incident energy-reducing effect. In conclusion, ytterbium oxide shows potential as a radiation-shielding material for creams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction With similar prevalence to injuries from fires, stings, and natural disasters, soft tissue injuries may occur from fireworks, industrial accidents, or other explosives. Surgeons are less familiar with treating high-velocity penetration from small debris, which may increase the chance of infection and subsequent fatality. Penetration risk curves have been developed to predict V50, the velocity with 50% probability of penetration, for various sized projectiles. However, there has been limited research using nonmetallic materials to achieve lower density projectiles less than 1 g cm−2, such as sand or rocks. Material and Methods To emulate the size and density of these energized particles, 14 ball bearings of stainless steel, silicon nitride, or Delrin acetal plastic ranging from 1.59 mm (1/16") to 9.53 mm (3/8") with sectional densities between 0.3 g cm−2 and 5  g cm−2 were launched toward porcine legs at a range of velocities to determine the penetration thresholds. High-speed videography was captured laterally at 40 kHz and impact velocity was captured using a physics-based tracking software. A generalized linear model with repeated measures and a logit link function was used to predict probability of penetration for each projectile. A total of 600 impacts were conducted to achieve at least 15 penetrating impacts for each projectile over a range of velocities. Results Higher impact velocities were required to penetrate the skin as sectional density of the projectile decreased, and the relationship between velocity and sectional density exhibited an exponential relationship (V 50, |$ = 184.6*S{D^{ - 0.385}}$|⁠ , R 2 = 0.95) with substantial change for nonlinearity in sectional densities ranging from 0.3 g cm−2 to 1  g cm−2. Compared to previous studies, the empirical relationship was consistent in the linear region (2-5  g cm−2), and novel experimentation filled in the gaps for sectional densities less than 1  g cm−2, which expressed more nonlinearity than previously estimated. For low-density projectiles with diameters of 1.59 (1/16") or 3.18 (1/8"), 32 impacts were lodged into the epidermis but did not penetrate through the dermis; however, penetration was defined as displacement into or through the dermis. Conclusions These experimental results may be used to develop and validate finite element simulations of low-density projectile impacts to address complex, multivariate loading conditions for the development of protective clothing to reduce wounding and subsequent infection rates. Electrospun nanofibrous membranes have attracted significant interest due to their captivating waterproof and breathable characteristics, stemming from the presence of interconnected and hydrophobic channels within these enhanced textiles. These distinctive traits bestow upon them substantial potential across various domains, encompassing applications in medical dressings, masks, and protective clothing. However, they also give rise to concerns about their durability, compromised waterproofing performance, limited breathability, insufficient mechanical strength, and high production costs. Furthermore, the manufacturing processes of electrospun waterproof and breathable membranes (WBMs) may carry adverse environmental implications, necessitating improvements in sustainability and ecological compatibility. This study begins with a concise overview of the operational principles and criteria for performance evaluation relevant to electrospun WBMs, providing comprehensive guidelines to drive future research. Following this, the authors delve into a thorough exploration of typical fabrication techniques and the prevailing strategies, exemplified by noteworthy ongoing research initiatives. Last, the existing challenges are outlined to foster the development of WBMs. In addition, future research directions and perspectives are presented to expedite the advancement of WBMs and support their commercial implementation. Drug-induced pigmentation (DIP) is estimated to account for 20% of all cases of acquired hyperpigmentation. Over 50 agents have been implicated, including antibiotics, antimalarials, antiretrovirals, antipsychotics, prostaglandin analogs, heavy metals, and chemotherapeutic agents. The skin, mucosal surfaces, nails, and hair can all be affected, with the color, distribution, onset, and duration of pigmentation varying between offending agents. Both a thorough physical examination and medication history are necessary to determine the offending agent. In terms of mechanism, DIP occurs most frequently through the accumulation of melanin within the dermis but also by drug accumulation, pigment synthesis, and iron deposition. Photoprotection, including applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen, wearing photoprotective clothing, and seeking shade, plays an important role in the prevention of exacerbation of DIP. Multiple lasers, including the picosecond alexandrite, Q-switched Nd:YAG, Q-switched alexandrite, and Q-switched ruby lasers, have been successful in obtaining clearance of DIP. In this review, we examine the unique characteristics of each of the inciting agents in terms of incidence, clinical presentation, time to onset and resolution, and pathogenesis. This study presents the development of multifunctional protective clothing for disabled individuals using PBAT/PLA biopolymeric-based electrospun nanofibrous membranes. The fabric consists of a superhydrophobic electrospun nanofibrous cloth reinforced with silica nanoparticles. The resulting nanofiber membranes were characterized using FE-SEM, a CA goniometer, breathability and hydrostatic pressure resistance tests, UV–vis spectroscopy, thermal infrared photography, tensile tests, and nanoindentation. The results demonstrated the integration of superhydrophobicity, breathability, and mechanical improvements in the protective clothing. The nanofibrous porous structure of the fabric allowed breathability, while the silica nanoparticles acted as an effective infrared reflector to keep the wearer cool on hot days. The fabric's multifunctional properties make it suitable for various products, such as outdoor clothing and accessories for individuals with disabilities. This study highlights the importance of selecting appropriate textiles for protective clothing and the challenges faced by disabled individuals in terms of mobility, eating, and dressing. Although studies have examined predictors of PPE to include situational, leadership, stressors and other psychosocial factors, research has not thoroughly examined the relationships between effective safety training administration, knowledge creation, and the influence of those factors on PPE use among firefighters. Method: This study aimed to assess those relationships by using structural equation modeling analysis. Results: The model fit was good, and findings confirmed the hypothesized model and relationships, which included a positive, significant relationship between effective safety training and safety knowledge and positive, significant relationships between safety knowledge and PPE-related safety behavior outcomes, including the effective use of PASS devices, the correct use of SCBA and PPE during overhaul operations, and the correct use and inspection of PPE among firefighters in general. Aims: To describe the development process of a device from the conception of the idea to the first contact with the commercial environment, and to demonstrate its practical application through an interdisciplinary collaboration between nursing and engineering for the design of a protective device for peripheral venous catheters. Background: Nurses are key agents for identifying unresolved needs or problems related to nursing care. To address these needs, creative ideation processes are often triggered among nurses to seek technological answers to these challenges. Results: The ten steps to develop a device are presented: (1) detecting an unsatisfied clinical need; (2) searching for preexisting marketed products; (3) searching for patents; (4) maintaining confidentiality throughout the process; (5) obtaining institutional support; (6) forming a multidisciplinary team; (7) developing the idea; (8) applying for a patent; (9) building the prototype; (10) marketing the device. This methodology was applied to design a protective device for peripheral venous catheters in hospitalized patients. Conclusions: Nurses can play a key role in the promotion of healthcare innovation in their field to improve procedures, thanks to their direct contact with patients, and by providing their insight on devices that can enhance patient care. The successful interdisciplinary collaboration between nurses and engineers can provide a response to relevant clinical problems such as the manipulation or removal of peripheral venous catheters. Implications for nursing and/or health policy: A hospital policy is required to encourage the participation of nurses in innovative actions. That yields more knowledge and recommendations on the means to protect and preserve that vital organ. Nowadays, such information is available thanks to the various formulae and filters of sunscreen products. Protection from UV rays is particularly important due to the high risk of sunburn, DNA mutation and changes, and skin cancer. This report will explore practical recommendations regarding the use of sunscreen, as well as advice on how we can protect ourselves from the impact of sun rays. The general methods for safeguarding from the sun include finding a shade, when you are outside, applying products to keep safe from the sun, wearing protective clothing, a hat and sunglasses. INTRODUCTION: Firefighters operating in hot environments face challenges from protective garments that restrict heat dissipation, resulting in increased core temperature, thermal discomfort, and performance decline. Cooling vests represent a viable solution. The study aim was to compare effectiveness of the same amount of cooling power to the upper body (UB) or whole body (WB) in alleviating thermoregulatory and physiological stress, enhancing cognitive function, and reducing ratings of thermal discomfort and exertion, during 60 min of exercise in a hot environment (40°C, 40% relative humidity) while wearing firefighter turnout gear. METHODS: E ight healthy individuals (27.5 ± 3 y) participated in three conditions with either no cooling (Control) or active cooling with a liquid perfused shirt (UB cooling), or with a liquid perfused shirt and pants (WB cooling). In each trial, subjects performed three sets of 15 min of stepping (20 steps · min-1) and 5 min of rest. RESULTS: Both cooling strategies were beneficial compared to having no cooling at all. Subjects could only complete two exercise bouts during Control, but they completed all three bouts with active cooling. WB cooling provided an advantage over UB cooling for core and skin temperature, and thermal comfort and sensation. The advantage in minimizing the increase in core temperature was only evident during the third exercise bout. DISCUSSION: A ctive cooling is advantageous under these conditions. WB cooling provided some benefits vs UB cooling during heavy intensity exercise; however, it is uncertain whether these benefits would be observed during light-to-moderate exercise, which more likely reflects an actual firefighting scenario. Purpose: Clothing fit, including garment ease and drape, impacts the volume of air between clothing layers and the body, directly affecting the amount of heat that can be transferred through a multi-layer clothing system. As most acute firefighting fatalities are caused by overexertion and heat strain, the purpose of this research was to determine the impact of ease allowances on air gaps in structural firefighting turnout suits and their subsequent effect on total heat loss (THL) when worn on a three-dimensional form. Design/methodology/approach: Four turnout suits with chest ease allowances of 6″, 8″, 10″ and 12″ were evaluated using an ANDI dynamic sweating thermal manikin. The average predicted manikin THL of each ensemble was calculated from the thermal and evaporative resistance measurements. A three-dimensional (3D) body scanner was utilized to calculate the distance and volume of clothing air gaps between the base layer and each turnout suit. Findings: Results demonstrate that reductions in upper body ease measurements trend towards statistically significant increases in THL, to a point, with fit limitations being reached before benefits can be significantly realized. An increase in standard chest ease measurements significantly decreased heat loss, even when forced convection from movement was considered. Originality/value: This is the first article of its kind to explore the relationship between garment ease and predicted manikin THL, especially for fire service protective clothing. Findings indicate a valid recommendation for turnout gear designers and manufacturers to optimize clothing fit to improve breathability and potentially reduce incidents of heat strain in the fire service. Falls are the most common type of accident in the construction industry, and falls to a lower level are among the leading causes of fatalities. Work-related fatalities due to falls, slips, and trips have been increasing, with Hispanic workers among the highest fatalities. This study investigated the association between fall accidents and attributes such as age, musculoskeletal pain (MSPs), sleep hours, safety knowledge, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and working hours among Hispanic construction workers involved in building construction. This study collected 220 valid responses and used nonparametric chi-square tests and binary logistic regression to analyze the data. This study found that the location of the fall, MSPs, and use of personal protective equipment have a significant effect on the likelihood of having fall accidents. The strongest predictor of fall accidents was "fall from a ladder", followed by having two or three MSPs. The use of PPE had the highest decreasing ratio in odds of fall accidents, indicating the importance of wearing PPE properly. The results show the importance of integrating safety management strategies within construction projects' broader life cycle management. The insights list how project engineers can incorporate these findings into Building Information Modeling (BIM) systems to enhance project planning and safety measures in reducing fall-related accidents and their severe consequences. This study highlights the importance of addressing MSPs, properly using PPE, and reducing falls from ladders in the construction industry to prevent fall accidents among Hispanic workers and minimize their severe consequences. Objectives. Addressing the prevalent issue of size misfits in large-scale issued firefighter uniforms due to diverse and complex body morphologies, this article presents an objective method for intelligent garment sizing matching without subjective weighting. Methods. The method employs criteria importance through inter-criteria correlation (CRITIC) and the catastrophe progression method (CPM) for more accurate and reliable sizing. Traditional methods, reliant on limited indicators such as height and chest girth and often subjectively determined by experts, are prone to reliability concerns. Matching decisions made based on our approach are evidence-based, transparent and reproducible, thus minimizing subjectivity and expert intervention. Results. A case study of 388 cases validates the method's efficacy in providing garment size recommendations, surpassing traditional experience-based approaches by reducing subjective bias. Conclusion. Despite some differences, the optimal alternatives for examinees are almost consistent across the different methods. Compared with traditional subjective weighting methods, this method has potential advantages in situations such as large-scale matching of firefighter protective clothing where individual customization or direct try-on is not feasible. Objectives. Currently, numerous studies have focused on testing or modeling to evaluate the safe service life of thermal protective clothing after thermal aging, reducing the risk to occupational personnel. However, testing will render the garment unsuitable for subsequent use and a series of input parameters for modeling are not readily available. In this study, a novel image recognition strategy was proposed to discriminate the mechanical strength of thermal protective fabric after thermal aging based on transfer learning. Methods. Data augmentation was used to overcome the shortcoming of insufficient training samples. Four pre-trained models were used to explore their performance in three sample classification modes. Results. The experimental results show that the VGG-19 model achieves the best performance in the three-classification mode (accuracy = 91%). The model was more accurate in identifying fabric samples in the early and late stages of strength decline. For fabric samples in the middle stage of strength decline, the three-classification mode was better than the four-classification and six-classification modes. Conclusions. Relevant studies in the fields of fire safety, occupational health and firefighter clothing were analyzed in this study to address the high injury rate among firefighters during fire rescue and the complexity of factors affecting skin burns. The findings indicate that the degree of skin burns in firefighters is primarily influenced by the heat source (heat flux, type), firefighter clothing (fabric, pattern) and the under-clothing air gap (thickness, characteristics). Since skin burns cannot be directly measured, internal skin heat transfer and burn prediction models are commonly employed to assess the impact of external factors on skin burns. These models can predict the safe working distance or time for firefighters. Investigating the influencing factors and prediction models of skin burns among firefighters holds significant value in enhancing operating procedures, optimizing firefighter clothing design and effectively preventing skin burns. Waterproof and breathable nanofiber membranes are highly desirable for protective textiles; however, the practical application of nanofiber membranes is limited by fluorine‐containing material addition or complicated post‐treatment. Herein, we reported unique fluorine‐free polyurethane (PU)/poly(styrene‐b‐s‐b‐styrene) (SBS) nanofiber membranes by a facile direct electrospinning. Owing to the addition of SBS, the hydrophobicity, waterproofness, and mechanical properties of PU nanofiber membranes were dramatically enhanced. Furthermore, the highly interconnective channels were constructed after the introduction of SBS into the PU nanofiber membrane, which resulted in enhanced breathability. The enhancement in the comprehensive performance of the PU/SBS composite nanofiber membrane might be attributed to the π–π interactions between SBS and PU. By adjusting the concentration of the PU/SBS, fluorine‐free PU/SBS nanofiber membranes were optimized systematically, exhibiting satisfactory waterproofness (hydrostatic pressure, 47.4 kPa), acceptable breathability (water vapor transition rate, 5.6 kg m−2 d−1), and outstanding mechanical properties (breaking strength, 5.7 MPa; breaking elongation, 387.9%). The International Olympic Committee recently introduced a consensus statement on recommendations for outdoor sports in the heat. However, indoor sports such as fencing whereby athletes are required to wear full body protective clothing when competing have received no recommendations. Such scenarios could cause high thermoregulatory demands particularly as competition progresses into latter rounds (direct elimination; DE). Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the thermoregulatory responses of épée fencing across different phases of competition (Poule and DE). Seven well-trained fencers competed in a simulated competition comprising of seven Poule and seven DE fights. Gastrointestinal temperature (Tgast), skin temperature (Tskin), mask temperature (Tmask), heart rate (HR), thermal sensation, differentiated ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), and movement characteristics were collected for all fights. There was a moderate thermoregulatory demand during Poule rounds shown by post-fight Tgast (38.1 ± 0.4°C), Tskin (34.4 ± 0.7°C), and thermal sensation ratings (6 ± 1). A greater thermoregulatory and perceptual demand observed during DE rounds evidenced by Tgast (38.7 ± 0.3°C post fight), Tskin (35.1 ± 0.7°C), thermal sensation (7 ± 1), increases in Tmask across DE rounds (~1.1°C), and RPE (~15). Furthermore, a significant (p < 0.05) reduction in distance covered from DE 1 to DE 7 suggests a thermoregulatory based impact on performance. This is the first study demonstrating the thermoregulatory demands of épée fencing, highlighting the need to develop heat exertion guidelines within fencing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of the study was to alleviate the thermal‐moisture comfort (TMC) of phase change material (PCM) thermal protective clothing, while simultaneously enhancing thermal protective performance (TPP) by a drip molding process. Nine types of PCM dripped fabrics were prepared by the drip molding process and served as comfort layers of thermal protective clothing. The TMC and TPP of the fabric systems were measured. A new method was proposed to balance the TMC and TPP of thermal protective clothing. The results demonstrated that the drip molding process marginally weakened the TMC while substantially enhancing the TPP of fabric systems. But the TMCs of the PCM dripped fabrics were far larger than the PCM coated fabric. Specifically, an increase in droplet diameter led to a decline in TMC and an improvement in TPP, whereas an increase in droplet interval resulted in an enhancement in TMC and a decrease in TPP. Abstract Facial features are important sources of information about perceived trustworthiness. Masks and protective clothing diminish the visibility of facial cues by either partially concealing the mouth and nose or covering the entire face. During the pandemic, the use of personal protective equipment affected and redefined who trusts whom in society. This study used the classical investment game of interpersonal trust with Chinese participants to explore the impact of occlusion on interpersonal trust. Faces with moderate initial trustworthiness were occluded by a mask or protective clothing in Experiment 1 and were digitally occluded by a square in Experiment 2, and faces with three levels of initial trustworthiness were occluded by a mask in Experiment 3. Results showed that both undergraduates (Experiment 1a) and non-student adults (Experiment 1b) perceived the faces with protective clothing as more trustworthy than faces wearing standard masks and faces not wearing masks. Faces with the top halves showing were perceived as trustworthy as full faces, while faces with the bottom halves showing were perceived as less trustworthy. The effect of masks is weak and complex. Masks reduced participants’ trust in faces with high initial trustworthiness, had no effect on faces with low and moderate initial trustworthiness, and only slightly increased the trust of undergraduates in faces with moderate initial trustworthiness. Our findings indicate that the lack of information caused by occlusion and the social significance associated with occlusion collectively affect people’s trust behavior in Chinese society. We believe the findings of this study will be useful in elucidating the effects of personal protective equipment usage on perceptions of trustworthiness.

Firefighters in such serious environments (i.e., hazardous flames and radiant heat, high air temperatures, hot chemicals and liquids) must wear fire protective clothing during fire extinguishing and rescue operations. Many studies in the field of fire protective clothing have been conducted to evaluate the protective, mechanical and comfort performance of fire protective clothing. A comprehensive review of the literature has been undertaken to provide a better understanding of single-layer and multilayer fire protective clothing with protective, mechanical and comfort performance. Factors affecting the durability of protective clothing in the light of their expected retirement age and a number of significant standards for laboratory and manikin testing are discussed. The comfort of wearing clothing is another aspect that needs special consideration when designing a multilayered fire protective suit. In this paper, preoxidized fibers, flame-retardant acrylic fibers and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) fibers were chosen to prepare thermal insulation felts by the spunlaced process. The preparation of thermal insulation felts by single-component fibers, bicomponent fibers and multi-component fibers was studied. The breaking strength of the single fibers, flame retardancy, thermal conductivity, air permeability, thermal stability, shrinkage rate after washing, and the breaking strength of the thermal insulation felts were characterized. The results show that, for the single-component felts, preoxidized fiber felt had a longitudinal char length of only 35 mm, which was less than that of flame-retardant acrylic fiber felts and PPS felts. However, its longitudinal breaking strength was only 39.8 N. The bicomponent thermal insulation felt, blended with flame-retardant acrylic fibers and preoxidized fibers, had a higher breaking strength than the single-component felt, but it had char lengths greater than 100 mm after the vertical burning test. When the ratio of the multi-component insulation felts (preoxidized fibers, PPS fibers and flame-retardant acrylic fibers) was 35:60:5, the felt's longitudinal char length measured 23 mm, which was less than that of the aramid felt 72 mm. This felt's thermal conductivity was 0.0515 W/mK. It had an air permeability of 1995 mm/s, and the longitudinal dimensional shrinkage rate following the thermal stability test was only 1.1%. The increasing awareness of safety standards for personal protective equipment in various industries and everyday life has significantly increased the demand for effective cut‐resistance clothing to prevent injuries. Ultra‐high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), renowned for its strength, is predominantly used to produce cut‐protective clothing for sectors such as automotive, manufacturing, glass, and metal. These cut‐resistance clothing are often exposed to harsh workplace conditions, including elevated temperatures, which can compromise their structural integrity and diminish their cut‐protection efficacy. The present work investigates the effect of temperature on the cut‐resistance performance of core‐spun UHMWPE yarns integrated with stainless‐steel and glass filament‐based knitted fabrics. Cut‐performance was assessed across industrial work handling temperatures ranging from 30 to 75°C. Furthermore, thermal cut performance was analyzed by structural characterization and surface morphology of the samples. The results revealed a general decline in cut performance with increasing temperature for all samples, with stainless steel‐reinforced UHMWPE fabrics experiencing the most pronounced reduction % compared with their glass fiber‐reinforced and 100% UHMWPE counterparts. These results are substantiated by analyses of surface temperature distribution profiles and x‐ray diffraction outcomes. Sports-related concussion (SRC) is an injury whereby impact to the face/head/neck impairs cognitive functioning. Parasport athletes have an increased risk for SRC. The Previous Concussion in Sport Group iterations lack guidance for parasport SRC assessment, management, and return-to-play. This article aims to investigate the research relating to parasport SRCs published since the 2021 Concussion in Para Sport (CIPS) position statement and highlights possible new recommendations. A literature review of parasport concussions was conducted. Articles citing the 2021 publication and/or published since then were reviewed. Relevant data were extracted and discussed in this article. Since 2021, twelve (n = 12) articles emerged investigating parasport SRC. Parasport athletes experience greater concussion symptoms and severity scores compared to able-bodied athletes. Visually impaired athletes account for >50% of parasport SRCs. Wheelchair basketball and rugby have the highest SRC incidence rates across parasports. Current SRC assessment methodologies are not designed with consideration of parasport athletes' unique experiences. Guidelines lack a return-to-learning protocol, making returning to education/work challenging for such athletes. Understanding these athletes' SRC experiences is paramount in supporting their recovery. Specific guidelines for SRC assessment, management, return-to-play, and return-to-learn for parasport athletes are necessary to enhance their rehabilitation and avoid the occurrence of long-term symptoms. Objective: Tonsillectomy is a common procedure performed nationally. The personal protective equipment and surgical gowning practices used during this procedure vary widely. We compiled a survey of ENT specialists to gain a national opinion about gowning in tonsillectomy with the aim of determining whether we could make it more environmentally friendly whilst maintaining the highest safety standards. Method: We developed a nine-question survey that was piloted prior to final implementation. The questionnaire was sent to senior registrars and consultant otolaryngologists in the UK. Results: The survey was completed by a total of 63 ENT specialists. It was found that 82.54 per cent of clinicians would consider wearing a reusable gown that would be sterilised between each procedure. Conclusion: Our survey suggests most ENT clinicians would consider using a more environmentally friendly surgical gown and some may even consider wearing no gown at all, although many are understandably concerned about the transmission of infection or blood splatter. Topics explored include the tracheal intubation process during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the assessment of the COVID-19 patient's physical status particularly airway condition prior to intubation, and the incidents of airway injuries and post-intubation systolic blood pressure increases reported.

Purpose: This study investigated the relationship between the risk of contamination during aseptic procedures performed by nursing students and the hairstyle type of the student performing the procedure. Methods: This study employed an observational design. The participants were 139 nursing students recruited from two colleges. Participants with short hair were assigned to the short-hair group (Group 1) without randomization. The remaining participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: those who put their hair in a hairnet (Group 2), those who had their hair tied back (Group 3), and those who had their hair untied (Group 4). Raters used a checklist to assess participants' performance of aseptic procedures and contamination-related behaviors. Results: Compared to the group wearing a hairnet (Group 2), more contamination occurred in the group with long hair tied back (Group 3) or not tied up (Group 4) (p<.001). Hair-related contamination risk behaviors were significantly more common in students with untied long hair (Group 4) than in the other three groups (Group 1, 2, and 3) (p<.001). Conclusion: These results suggest that when performing aseptic procedures, measures are needed to prevent hair-related contamination by restraining the hair or using a hair cap. Developing new fabric systems with excellent thermal protective performance is essential to protecting workers from hot pressurized steam hazards. In this study, a laminated fabric was selected and a weft-knitted spacer fabric was developed for steam protective fabric systems. Effects of the configuration of the fabric systems and heat setting of spacer fabric on performances were investigated. The results demonstrate that the developed spacer fabric significantly prolonged skin burn times compared with controls. However, heat setting of spacer fabric had a negligible effect on improving thermal protective performance. Spacer fabric provided superior thermal protection while ensuring thermal comfort and enhancing air permeability, especially for spacer fabric after heat setting. Generally, a fabric system composed of a laminated outer shell and a spacer fabric is the best choice for steam protective clothing. The findings help develop a novel thermal liner to decrease energy transfer and provide better protection from pressurized steam. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chemical warfare agents (CWAs) pose a threat as gaseous substances and as liquid aerosols, necessitating chemical warfare-protective clothing for soldiers. The paramount consideration lies in the effectiveness of the clothing as a barrier against the pertinent CWAs. This paper presents a dynamic swatch test method aimed at evaluating the performance of such clothing against liquid-phase aerosol penetration. Central to the methodology is a specialized test cell designed to rotate to the left and right, integrated within a laboratory wind tunnel, replicating mission-relevant conditions with varying wind speeds. Utilizing di(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate particles as liquid aerosols, tests were conducted at wind speeds of 1.0, 3.0, and 5.0 m/s. Penetration assessment relied on analyzing particle counts downstream and upstream of the fabric, with preliminary studies showing that higher wind speeds and fabric air permeabilities increase penetration at an equivalent face velocity of 5.0 cm/s. Interestingly, penetration decreased when fabric samples were subjected to rotation. The system and methodology devised demonstrated consistent and repeatable results, offering valuable insights into optimizing the effectiveness of chemical warfare-protective clothing. High‐performance fibers are known for their exceptional specific strength and resistance to various hazardous conditions, including fire. However, the long‐term performance of these fibers when exposed to convective heat has rarely been reported. This study investigated the accelerated thermal aging behavior of three high‐performance fabrics of different blends of inherently flame‐resistant high‐performance fibers: copolymer of aramids (Technora®)/polybenzoxazole (PBO); para‐aramid/meta‐aramid; and para‐aramid/polybenzimidazole (PBI). Fabric specimens were thermally aged for up to 1200 h at temperatures ranging from 90 to 320°C. While all three fabrics experienced losses in the breaking force, the Technora®/PBO fabric displayed the best strength retention, despite the complete disappearance of the Technora® fiber crystallinity after aging at 320°C for 1200 h. The para‐aramid/PBI blended fabric showed signs of competing aging processes at high temperatures. An increase in the fabrics' crystallinity and evidence of chain scission were observed after thermal aging. Additionally, degradation in the fabric's water‐repellent finish was observed. Moisture barriers are an essential component in firefighters' protective clothing as they allow water vapor to exit and prevent liquids from entering into the garment. However, they may be sensitive to thermal aging. This study investigates the effect of accelerated thermal aging at temperatures between 95 and 240°C on three different moisture barriers used in firefighters' protective clothing. Variations in their tear force, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), and apparent contact angle were observed after thermal aging. These variations were influenced by factors such as the base fabric structure, fiber content, adhesive characteristics, and presence of an additional flame-resistant polyurethane coating on top of the expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane. Adhesive degradation and delamination were observed in one moisture barrier, whilst different extents of base fabric degradation occurred in all three of them, leading to tear force reduction. Depending on the moisture barrier and aging temperature, the membranes experienced crack formation or pore closure, which affected the WVTR. The water-repellent finish on the fabric side degraded in two moisture barriers but was not affected in the other. These findings highlight the importance of considering the constitutive materials and the structure of moisture barriers to understand their aging behavior and improve firefighters' safety. Background: The first waves of the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on health systems and health professionals, due to the high number of cases and a lack of preparation. The aim of this study was to understand how nurses working in hospital units and in intensive care perceived the performance of nurse managers and senior hospital management during the first two waves of the pandemic. Methods: The phenomenological approach proposed by Giorgi was used to investigate perceptions of the performance of nurse managers and senior hospital management during the first two waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain. Fourteen clinical nurses who worked on the front line in inpatient units or intensive care units of the Health Services of Extremadura and Madrid in the first (March–April 2020) and second (October–November 2020) waves of the COVID-19 pandemic participated in this study. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews, following a script of themes, in a theoretical sample of nurses who were worked during the pandemic. Results: Two main themes emerged from the analysis of the data: (1) perceptions about the performance of nurse managers and senior hospital managers during the first and second waves of the pandemic (health system failure; belief that senior hospital management professionals could have managed the pandemic better; recognizing the efforts of middle management (nursing supervisors); insufficient institutional support) and (2) strategies employed by nurses to compensate for the weaknesses in pandemic management. Conclusions: The clinical nurses perceived that the nurse managers demonstrated better management of the pandemic than the hospital's senior management, which they attribute to their proximity, empathy, accessibility, and ability to mediate between them and the senior management. The nurses also believe that the senior management of the hospitals was to blame for organisational failures and the poor management of the pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
