Aunque las cabeceras desempeñan un rol clave en las cuencas, se encuentran entre los hábitats más amenazados del planeta. Las cabeceras naturales no forestadas han sido poco investigadas en contraste con las forestadas. En consecuencia, el objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la estructura taxonómica y funcional del ensamble de insectos acuáticos en arroyos de cabecera en pastizales contrastando tres hábitats en dos periodos hidrológicos. La estructura funcional fue analizada considerando rasgos alimentarios y hábitos. Evaluamos el grado de solapamiento entre rabiones, pozas y parches de macrófitas; y las diferencias en métricas taxonómicas y funcionales entre estos hábitats fluviales. Los ensambles en macrófitas y en rabiones se solaparon parcialmente y se separaron del ensamble de las pozas. Los parches de macrófitas alojaron la mayor abundancia, pero la riqueza y la diversidad fueron mayores en los rabiones. La diversidad y la riqueza funcional presentaron el mismo patrón que el análisis taxonómico: fueron mayores en los rabiones, intermedias en las macrófitas y menores en las pozas. El análisis multivariado de grupos funcionales coincidió con el análisis taxonómico siendo los ensambles funcionalmente diferentes entre los hábitats. Los recolectores fueron predominantes, pero el análisis combinado de los rasgos alimentarios y los hábitos permitió distinguir el uso de los diferentes hábitats ya que los recolectores fueron principalmente agarradores en rabiones y reptadores en pozas y macrófitas. Las características del hábitat afectaron en consecuencia el hábito dominante dentro de los recolectores, con consecuencias potenciales sobre los procesos del ecosistema (e. g. tasas de procesamiento de la materia orgánica fina). Este estudio provee valiosa información sobre la estructura taxonómica y funcional de la comunidad de insectos acuáticos en cabeceras en pastizales que puede ser útil para el manejo y la conservación del recurso. Although headwater streams play a key role in drainage catchments, they are among the most threatened habitats on earth. Natural open-canopy headwaters, in particular, have received little research attention in contrast to the most worldwide studied forested catchments. Then, the aim of this study was to assess the taxonomic and functional structure of insect assemblages in grassland headwaters contrasting three different habitats in two hydrological periods. Functional composition was quantified considering trophic and habit traits. We assessed the degree of assemblage overlapping among three habitat units (riffles, pools and macrophyte patches) and the differences in taxonomic and functional metrics among these stream habitats. Assemblages in macrophytes and riffles were rather overlapped and separated from the assemblage in pools. Macrophyte patches held the greatest insect abundance but richness and diversity were higher in riffles. Functional richness and diversity followed the same pattern found for the taxonomic analysis: higher in riffles, intermediate in macrophytes and lower in pools. The multivariate approach performed with functional groups concurred with the taxonomic analysis, being assemblages functionally different among habitats. Assemblages were dominated by gathering collectors, but the combined analysis of trophic and habit traits allowed disentangling the use of different habitats since collectors were mainly clingers in riffles and sprawlers in pools and macrophyte patches. Habitat characteristics affected the dominant habit within gathering collectors, with potential consequences for ecosystem processes (e.g. processing rates of fine organic material). This study provides valuable information on the taxonomic and functional structure of the insect community in grassland headwaters that can be useful for stream manage-ment and conservation. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the main causes of cancer-related mortality in the developed world despite recent developments in detection and treatment. Several epidemiological studies indicate that metformin, a widely prescribed antidiabetic drug, exerts a protective effect on different cancers including CRC. Furthermore, a recent double-blind placebo-controlled, randomized trial showed that metformin significantly decreased colorectal adenoma recurrence. Studies exploring the mechanism of action of metformin in cells derived from different types of cancers reported many effects including respiratory chain complex 1 inhibition, Akt phosphorylation inhibition, ATP depletion, PKA activation and Wnt signaling inhibition. However, many of these results were obtained employing metformin at concentrations several fold higher than those achieved in target tissues in diabetic patients receiving therapeutic recommended doses of metformin. In contrast, recent studies obtained with metformin at concentrations compatible with those detected in human intestines revealed that metformin elicit responses that target β-catenin, PI3K/Akt, E-cadherin, p120-catenin and focal adhesion kinase which are key molecules and signaling pathways associated to colorectal cancer development. Sclerotinia minor causa el tizón del maní, enfermedad que ocasiona pérdidas en el cultivo. Este patógeno produce esclerocios como estructura de resistencia y se encuentra en forma agregada en el campo, lo que dificulta la evaluación de herramientas de control de la enfermedad. Es necesario el desarrollo de una técnica de inoculación que permita la homogeneidad de inóculo en cada unidad experimental. Los objetivos fueron: desarrollar y validar una metodología de inoculación a campo de S. minor en maní, y evaluar el comportamiento de diferentes genotipos del cultivo. Se aislaron y cuantificaron esclerocios de S. minor de muestras de suelo, se seleccionaron subpoblaciones y se produjo inóculo en dos medios de cultivo líquido. El inóculo generado se aplicó a campo sobre diez genotipos y se evaluó la intensidad de la enfermedad y la homogeneidad en la respuesta. El número de esclerocios en suelo fue de 0,81/100 gr antes y 2,07/100 gr después de la inoculación. S. minor creció en ambos medios de cultivo, pero el caldo papa presentó mayores ventajas. La técnica de inoculación fue exitosa, logrando que los valores de incidencia fueran homogéneos entre repeticiones. Se observaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en el comportamiento de los genotipos frente a la enfermedad. Sclerotinia minor causes peanut blight, a disease that generates losses to the crop. S. minor produces sclerotia as a resistance structure and is found in aggregate form in the field, making it difficult to evaluate disease control tools. It is necessary to develop an inoculation technique that allows homogenizing the inoculum in each experimental unit. The objectives of this work were: to develop and validate a field inoculation methodology for S. minor in peanuts, and to evaluate the behavior of different genotypes of the crop. Sclerotia of S. minor were isolated and quantified from soil samples, subpopulations were selected and the inoculum was produced in two liquid culture media. The inoculum generated was applied in the field on ten peanut genotypes, the intensity of the disease and the homogeneity of response were evaluated. The number of sclerotia in soil was 0.81/100 g before and 2.07/100 g after inoculation. S. minor grew in both culture media, but potato dextrose agar broth presented greater advantages. The inoculation technique was successful at achieving homogenous incidence values among repetitions. A new riffle beetle, Zunielmis pax gen. et sp. nov., is described from Colombia (Vichada, Puerto Carreño, Bita River basin). It can be distinguished from all the other elmids by having large areas of a microgranular mesh (plastron) on the pronotum and elytra, crenulate lateral margin of the latter two, the shorter interocular distance than diameter of each eye, as well as by the characters of the structure of mandibles, the shape and sculpture of pronotum, and the structure of mesosternum, mesotibiae and elytra. The imagoes were collected on freshwater sponges. The habitat, where the new species was found, is described, and the adaptive meaning of the characteristics of plastron are discussed. Drawings and photographs of the adult habitus, distinctive morphological characters, and male and female genitalia are provided. Имаго были собраны на пресноводных губках. Опи- сывается местообитание, в котором новый вид был найден, и обсуждается адаптивное значение признаков пластрона. Bromus auleticus is a winter wild species with promissory characteristics for domestication as forage that inhabits temperate-warm grasslands from a wide region from South America. Populations from regions with different environmental conditions are considered as ecotypes and are associated with different seedborne Epichloë fungal endophytes. Association with Epichloë provides B. auleticus with increased growth capacity and resistance against pathogens. The seeds mature at the end of spring and germinate in autumn, remaining dormant during wet and warm summer. As the persistence of Epichloë endophytes in the seed is highly sensitive to temperature and humidity, we studied how the endophytes modulate seed germination in response to these factors in two B. auleticus ecotypes named La Pampa (LP) and El Palmar (EP). We also studied how environmental factors during germination affect endophyte survival. In the LP ecotype, adapted to coldest temperatures in autumn, Epichloë improved final germination under alternating temperatures, but had no effects on germination inhibition imposed by low water availability. In the EP ecotype, adapted to warm humid summer and autumn, the endophyte promoted germination at constant 25°C and alternating 15/25°C temperatures, and prevented germination at low water potentials. At 30°C, seed germination was inhibited and whereas seeds remained viable, endophyte survival was significantly lowered. The effect of Epichloë on B. auleticus seed germination was ecotype-specific: promoting germination at alternating temperatures in La Pampa ecotype or at high temperatures in El Palmar ecotype, while inhibiting it at low water availabilities, could be an endophyte-mediated ecotypic strategy minimising endophyte mortality and increasing seedling establishment. Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the leading causes of mortality from malignant diseases worldwide. In general terms, CRC presents high heterogeneity due to the influence of different genetic and environmental factors; also, the neoplastic cells are strongly influenced by the extracellular matrix and several surrounding cells, known together as the tumor microenvironment (TME). Bidirectional communication takes place between the tumor and the TME through the release of autocrine and paracrine factors. Parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) is a cytokine secreted by a wide variety of tissues and is able to regulate several cellular functions both in physiological as well as in pathological processes. It exerts its effects as a paracrine/autocrine factor, although its mode of action is mainly paracrine. It has been shown that this peptide is expressed by several tumors and that the tumor secretion of PTHrP is responsible for the malignant humoral hypercalcemia. Eight years ago, when our research group started studying PTHrP effects in the experimental models derived from intestinal tumors, the literature available at the time addressing the effects of PTHrP on colorectal tumors was limited, and no articles had been published regarding to the paracrine action of PTHrP in CRC cells. Based on this and on our previous findings regarding the role of PTH in CRC cells, our purpose in recent years has been to explore the role of PTHrP in CRC. We analyzed the behavior of CRC cells treated with exogenous PTHrP, focalizing in the study of the following events: Survival, cell cycle progression and proliferation, migration, chemoresistance, tumor-associated angiogenesis, epithelial to mesenchymal transition program and other events also associated with invasion, such us the induction of cancer stem cells features. This work summarizes the major findings obtained by our investigation group using in vitro and in vivo CRC models that evidence the parti cipation of PTHrP in the acquisition of an aggressive phenotype of CRC cells and the molecular mechanisms involved in these processes. Recently, we found that this cytokine induces this malignant behavior not only by its direct action on these intestinal cells but also through its influence on cells derived from TME, promoting a communication between CRC cells and surrounding cells that contributes to the molecular and morphological changes observed in CRC cells. These investigations establish the basis for our next studies in order to address the clinical applicability of our findings. Recognizing the factors and mechanisms that promote invasion in CRC cells, evasion to the cytotoxic effects of current CRC therapies and thus metastasis is decisive for the identification of new markers with the potential to improve early diagnosis and/or to predict prognosis, to predetermine drug resistance and to provide treatment guidelines that include targeted therapies for this disease. En la elaboración de cerveza las levaduras cumplen un rol fundamental. Además de ser responsables de llevar a cabo la fermentación, generando principalmente etanol y dióxido de carbono, también son capaces de metabolizar y producir numerosos compuestos orgánicos que tienen un impacto determinante en el aroma y el sabor final de la cerveza. Las especies Saccharomyces cerevisiae y Saccharomyces pastorianus son utilizadas tradicionalmente para la producción de cervezas ale y lager, respectivamente. No obstante, el continuo crecimiento en el mercado de la cerveza artesanal y el aumento del interés y las exigencias de los consumidores han orientado los esfuerzos hacia la producción de cervezas diferenciales e innovadoras. En este punto, las levaduras no convencionales han cobrado gran protagonismo como herramientas para el desarrollo de nuevos productos. En el presente trabajo se describe y desarrolla la potencial aplicación en el sector cervecero de diferentes especies de levaduras no convencionales pertenecientes a los géneros Brettanomyces, Torulaspora, Lachancea, Wickerhamomyces, Pichia y Mrakia, entre otras, así como también levaduras del género Saccharomyces distintas a las levaduras cerveceras tradicionales. Se detallan las condiciones de fermentación de este tipo de levaduras y su capacidad de asimilar y metabolizar diferentes componentes del mosto y de aportar características particulares al producto final. Este trabajo provee el estado del arte sobre levaduras no convencionales, lo que resulta de gran relevancia para evaluar su aplicación en la producción de cervezas artesanales con características sensoriales diferenciales, cervezas bajas en calorías, cervezas sin alcohol y cervezas funcionales. Yeasts play a crucial role in brewing. During fermentation, besides ethanol and carbon dioxide, yeasts produce a considerable number of organic compounds, which are essential for beer flavor. In particular, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Saccharomyces pastorianus are traditionally used in the production of ale and lager beers, respectively. Nowadays, the continuous growth of the craft beer market motivates the production of differential and innovative beers; leading specialists and brewers focus on non-conventional yeasts as tools for new product development. In this work, we describe the potential application of non-conventional yeast species such as those of the genera Brettanomyces, Torulaspora, Lachancea, Wickerhamomyces, Pichia and Mrakia in the craft brewing industry, as well as non-traditional brewing yeasts of the Saccharomyces genus. Furthermore, the fermentation conditions of these non-conventional yeasts are discussed, along with their abilities to assimilate and metabolize diverse wort components providing differential characteristics to the final product. In summary, we present a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art of non-conventional yeasts, which is highly relevant for their application in the production of novel craft beers including flavored beers, non-alcoholic beers, low-calorie beers and functional beers. El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar la fermentación láctica como bioestrategia para potenciar la actividad antioxidante de la avena. Se evaluó la capacidad de 31 cepas de bacterias lácticas (BL) para adaptarse a un sistema de avena/agua (SAA) mediante la determinación del crecimiento, la acidificación y la actividad fermentativa (método impedimétrico; tiempo de detección [DT], velocidad máxima de cambio de conductabilidad [VMCC] y porcentaje de cambio de conductabilidad [PCC]). Además, se determinó el contenido de compuestos fenólicos (CF) mediante el método de Folin-Ciocalteu (equivalentes de ácido gálico [EAG]), así como de péptidos, de aminoácidos libres y de actividad antirradicalaria (métodos DPPH• y ABTS•+) de los extractos metanólicos y acuosos obtenidos a partir de los SAA fermentados (SAAf). Seis cepas mostraron la mejor adaptabilidad al SAA y produjeron altos valores de VMCC (0,34-0,47 μS/min) y PCC (53,6-66,6%), con bajos valores de DT (≤ 3 h). Estos cambios fueron acompañados por modificaciones en la concentración de CF, péptidos y aminoácidos libres, los cuales fueron dependientes de la cepa. Se evidenció un incremento de la concentración de CF en los SAAf de las seis cepas (29,1-39,85 μg EAG/ml) con respecto al SAA control (17,1 μg EAG/ml). Además, hubo un incremento (9-25,5%) en la actividad antioxidante de los extractos metanólicos de SAAf medida por ambos métodos. Respecto del contenido en péptidos/aminoácidos libres de los SAAf y de su actividad antioxidante, se encontraron modificaciones de menor magnitud. Los resultados muestran que las BL son capaces de adaptarse a la avena como sustrato de fermentación e incrementar su contenido de compuestos antioxidantes. The objective of this work was to study lactic fermentation as a biostrategy to enhance the antioxidant activity of oats. The adaptability of 31 strains of lactic bacteria (LB) in an oats/water system (OWS/SAA) was evaluated, measuring growth, acidification and fermentation activity (impedimetric method; detection time [DT], maximum rate of conductance change [MRCC/VMCC] and percentage of conductance change [PCC]). Moreover, the content of phenolic compounds (PC) was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu method (gallic acid equivalents [GAE]), free peptides and amino acids and free radical scavenging activity (DPPH• and ABTS•+ methods) of methanolic and aqueous extracts obtained from fermented OWS/SAAs (fOWS/SAAf) were determined. Six strains have shown the best adaptability to SAA, with high values of VMCC (0.34-0.47 μS/min) and PCC (53.6-66.6%), and low values of DT (≤ 3 h). In these f/OWS/SAAf the chemical composition was also modified (PC concentration, peptides and free amino acids) with strain-dependent behavior. The PC content in f/OWS/SAAf using these six strains (29.1-36.9 μg GAE/ml) was higher than the control content in OWS/SAA control (17.1 ± 1.9 μg GAE/ml). An increase (9-25.5%) in antioxidant activity in f/OWS/SAAf methanolic extracts was detected using both methods. Minor modifications were observed in the peptide and free amino acid content of SAA and their antioxidant activity. BACKGROUND: Probiotics are used to manage a number of gastrointestinal disorders due to their beneficial properties. Clinical reports showed that probiotics also improve the life quality of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) subjected to oncologic treatment. In a CRC animal model, probiotics supplementation has the potential to decrease the formation of aberrant crypts and ameliorate tumor malignancy, enhancing the antitumor effect of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) chemotherapy. Based on these data, we hypothesize that the administration of probiotics impact positively in the overall survival and life quality of rats with CRC under the treatment of capecitabine, which is the pro drug of 5-FU. AIM To evaluate the probiotics effects in a rat CRC model treated with capecitabine and followed until the end of life. METHODS: 1,2-Dimethylhidrazine dihydrochloride (1,2-DMH) was employed as carcinogen inductor of CRC. Fifty male Wistar-Lewis rats were randomly assigned to one of five following groups: Control (n = 5), Control + probiotics (Control-P group, n = 5), 1,2-DMH alone (DMH group, n = 10), 1,2-DMH + capecitabine (DMH-C group, n = 10), 1,2-DMH + probiotics (DMH-P group, n = 10) and 1,2-DMH + capecitabine + probiotics (DMH-C-P group, n = 10). All parametric data were expressed as the mean ± SD. The statistical significance of differences was analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Data were analyzed with InfoStat software. The results were considered statistically significant at P < 0.05. Overall survival was evaluated with the Kaplan-Meier estimator with the log-rank test. RESULTS: The data of mean overall survival for DMH, DMH-P, DMH-C, DMH-C-P, Control and Control-P groups were 250 d [95% confidence interval (CI): 242.5-253.1], 268 d (95%CI: 246.3-271.4), 380 d (95%CI: 337.8-421.9), 480 d (95%CI: 436.9-530.7), 588 d (95%CI: 565.8-609.3) and 590 d (95%CI: 564.3-612.9), respectively, with a significant difference between DMH-C and DMH-C-P groups (P = 0.001). Comparing all groups by Kaplan-Meier estimator, we found a significantly different in the overall survival of DMH and DMH-P groups respect to DMH-C (P = 0.001) and DMH-C-P (P = 0.001) groups; interestingly, there were no meaningful differences between Control, Control-P and DMH-C-P groups (P = 0.012). The tendency of change in body weight gain of the rats at 90 d of finishing DMH administration was similar in Control group compared with DMH-C and DMH-C-P groups; however, and of relevance, DMH-C-P group has experienced a higher body weight gain at the end of animal's life than DMH-C group (P = 0.001). In DMH-C-P group we found a positive effect of probiotics in clinical manifestations since diarrhea, constipation and blood stool were absenting. Also, the tumor burden was lower in DMH-C-P than DMH-C, DMH-P or DMH groups (1.25 vs 1.81 vs 3.9 vs 4.8 cm2, respectively). DMH-C and DMH-C-P groups showed only mucinous carcinoma type while in other DMH groups the tumor types were variable. However, mucinous carcinoma from DMH-C-P group showed invasion until muscularis propria layer. Interestingly, metastatic lymph node was observed in DMH, DMH-C and DMH-P groups but not in DMH-C-P. All animals in Control group died from natural causes without objective injuries. All animals of DMH and DMH-P groups died from tumor complications (i.e., obstruction or intestinal perforation); however, this cause was seen only in 44.5% of DMH-C and DMH-C-P groups. CONCLUSION: Probiotics administration improves life quality of rats with CRC under capecitabine treatment and also has a positive effect in the overall survival of these animals treated with this drug. Latin America with its considerable North-South extent is subject to climate that varies from tropical, subtropical and warm temperate to temperate. Different agricultural products are produced in the area including cereals, oilseeds, beans, fruits and nuts together with animal production including cattle for beef and milk, pigs, poultry and fish. The heterogeneity of agriculture in Latin America is reflected in the diversity of the region's farm structures. While agriculture in the Southern Cone is dominated by large, commercial and export-oriented farms, particularly in Argentina and Brazil, besides increasingly in other countries like Uruguay, much of the rest of the region is characterised by smallholder and family agriculture. The contamination of agricultural products with mycotoxins has impact both human and animal health, as well as the economy due to losses related to rejections of agricultural products and by-products during trade. The economic burden related to the consumption of mycotoxins by animals is especially important, causing productivity losses up to the death of animals. The relevant mycotoxins are fumonisins, deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEN) in cereals and cereal-based products, aflatoxins in cereals, oily seeds and nuts, aflatoxin M1 in milk and dairy products as well as ochratoxin A (OTA) in coffee, grapes and raisins. Co-occurrence of mycotoxins has also been observed mainly with aflatoxins and fumonisins in different Latin American countries (Torres et al., 2015). Advances on legislation in different countries including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Uruguay have been done to establish maximum limits for mycotoxins including aflatoxins, DON, ZEN, OTA, patulin and ergot alkaloids (ANVISA, 2011/2017; CAA, 2019/2021, Norma Oficial Mexicana, N.-243-S., 2010/2010; Reglamento Sanitario de los Alimentos, 2013). Most species of Neotropical Malpighiaceae are pollinated by oil-collecting bees of diverse sizes, but the effect of pollinator size on their reproductive success has still not been addressed in the literature. We performed a comparative description of stigma arrangements, analyzing the reproductive system and reproductive success and assessing pollinator sizes in Stigmaphyllon bonariense and Stigmaphyllon jatrophifolium. We collected flowers in three natural populations, conducting pollinator censuses and captures and performing manipulative experiments to determine the plants breeding system. We analyzed the morphology of stigmas and their receptivity and calculated the perimeter of the triangle formed by the stigmas (ST). Pollinator sizes, potential area for pollen transfer (PAPT), and the frequency of visits were also calculated. Stigma arrangement resulted in inverted triangles, and the ST was smaller in S. jatrophifolium than in S. bonariense. The overlap between ST and PAPT suggests that pollinators of all sizes were efficient in pollinating S. jatrophifolium, whereas only large and very large pollinators where efficient in S. bonariense. Moreover, very large pollinators had the highest visit frequencies. Our results indicated that both species are obligate xenogamous, pollinator-dependent, and present pollen limitation. We observed an increase in reproductive success related to the marked turnover in pollinator assemblage throughout the flowering season. These findings suggest that fruit and seed sets vary according to the context of the pollinators and that large pollinators would have the best performance. Fil: Avalos, Adan Alberto. Muchos ejemplos de importantes procesos ecológicos provienen de sistemas insulares. Esto se debe a su espacio y biodiversidad acotados, y a que usualmente se conoce con detalle su historia geológica y de conexión con continentes. Sin embargo, en Argentina todavía existe un conocimiento rudimentario sobre las aves que dependen parcial o totalmente de ecosistemas insulares. En este trabajo reviso y discuto información ornitológica de los sistemas insulares de Argentina, argumentando que éstos pueden ser prioritarios para futuras investigaciones y acciones de manejo. Conocer la biodiversidad de las islas, sus particularidades y su estado de conservación actual podría ser relevante en el futuro para evitar extinciones locales. Además, las islas pueden constituir refugios de taxones únicos y zonas donde el manejo de especies invasoras puede ser más factible. Por otra parte, el conocimiento sobre la ecología de islas puede ser útil para estudiar y conservarotros ecosistemas, tanto terrestres como acuáticos, lo que resulta de gran relevancia en un paisaje global cada vez más fragmentado. Premise: Lantana and Lippia (Verbenaceae) are two large Linnean genera whose classification has been based on associated fruit traits: fleshy vs. dry fruits and one vs. two seed-bearing units. We reconstruct evolutionary relationships and the evolution of the two fruit traits to test the validity of these traits for classification. Methods: Previous studies of plastid DNA sequences provided limited resolution for this group. Consequently, seven nuclear loci, including ITS, ETS, and five PPR loci, were sequenced for 88 accessions of the Lantana/Lippia clade and three outgroups. Results: Neither Lantana nor Lippia is monophyletic. Burroughsia, Nashia, Phyla, and several Aloysia species are included within the clade comprising Lantana and Lippia. We provide a hypothesis for fruit evolution and biogeographic history in the group and their relevance for classification. Conclusions: Fleshy fruits evolved multiple times in the Lantana/Lippia clade and thus are not suitable taxonomic characters. Several sections of Lantana and Lippia and the small genera are monophyletic, but Lippia section Zappania is broadly paraphyletic, making circumscription of genera difficult. Lippia sect. Rhodolippia is a polyphyletic group characterized by convergence in showy bracts. Species of Lantana sect. Sarcolippia, previously transferred to Lippia, are not monophyletic. The clade originated and diversified in South America, with at least four expansions into both Central America and the Caribbean and two to Africa. The types species of Lantana and Lippia occur in small sister clades, rendering any taxonomy that retains either genus similar to its current circumscription impossible. Fil: Lu Irving, Patricia. The scientific community is working against the clock to arrive at therapeutic interventions to treat patients with COVID-19. Among the strategies for drug discovery, virtual screening approaches have the capacity to search potential hits within millions of chemical structures in days, with the appropriate computing infrastructure. In this article, we first analyzed the published research targeting the inhibition of the main protease (Mpro), one of the most studied targets of SARS-CoV-2, by docking-based methods. An alarming finding was the lack of an adequate validation of the docking protocols (i.e., pose prediction and virtual screening accuracy) before applying them in virtual screening campaigns. The performance of the docking protocols was tested at some level in 57.7% of the 168 investigations analyzed. However, we found only three examples of a complete retrospective analysis of the scoring functions to quantify the virtual screening accuracy of the methods. Moreover, only two publications reported some experimental evaluation of the proposed hits until preparing this manuscript. All of these findings led us to carry out a retrospective performance validation of three different docking protocols, through the analysis of their pose prediction and screening accuracy. Surprisingly, we found that even though all tested docking protocols have a good pose prediction, their screening accuracy is quite limited as they fail to correctly rank a test set of compounds. These results highlight the importance of conducting an adequate validation of the docking protocols before carrying out virtual screening campaigns, and to experimentally confirm the predictions made by the models before drawing bold conclusions. Finally, successful structure-based drug discovery investigations published during the redaction of this manuscript allow us to propose the inclusion of target flexibility and consensus scoring as alternatives to improve the accuracy of the methods. Roundup Transorb® (RDT) is a glyphosate-based herbicide commonly used in agricultural practices worldwide. This herbicide exerts negative effects on the aquatic ecosystem and affects bioenergetic and detoxification pathways, oxidative stress, and cell damage in marine organisms. These effects might also occur at the transcriptional level; however, the expression of genes associated with oxidative stress has not been studied well. Odontesthes humensis is a native Brazilian aquatic species naturally distributed in the habitats affected by pesticides, including Roundup Transorb® (RDT). This study evaluated the toxic effects of short-term exposure to RDT on O. humensis. Moreover, the genes related to oxidative stress were sequenced and characterized, and their expressions in the gills, hepatopancreas, kidneys, and brain of the fish were quantified by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. The animals were exposed to two environmentally relevant concentrations of RDT (2.07 and 3.68 mg L−1) for 24 h. Lipid peroxidation, reactive oxygen species (ROS), DNA damage, and apoptosis in erythrocytes were quantified by flow cytometry. The expression of the target genes was modulated in most tissues in the presence of the highest tested concentration of RDT. In erythrocytes, the levels of lipid peroxidation, ROS, and DNA damage were increased in the presence of both the concentrations of RDT, whereas cell apoptosis was increased in the group exposed to 3.68 mg L−1 RDT. In conclusion, acute exposure to RDT caused oxidative stress in the fish, induced negative effects on cells, and modulated the expression of genes related to the enzymatic antioxidant system in O. humensis. Se describe el patrón de composición y abundancia de especies de micromamíferos terrestres y su variación temporal, a lo largo de un gradiente altitudinal en ambientes áridos del noroeste argentino. Se establecieron dos transectas altitudinales, desde 2 700 a 4 700 m snm, sobre las laderas secas de la vertiente oriental de los Andes, en las provincias de Jujuy y Salta. En cada transecta se establecieron cinco sitios de muestreo cada 500 m de altura. El muestreo se realizó mediante grillas de 36 (6x6) trampas tipo Sherman y cada sitio se visitó en 10 oportunidades. El patrón de riqueza y abundancia a lo largo del gradiente se identificó mediante regresiones (LOWESS, lineales y polinómicas) y la influencia de los factores climáticos explicativos se evaluó mediante regresiones múltiples (GLM’s). Se capturaron 235 individuos de nueve especies con un esfuerzo de muestreo de 4 248 trampas-noche. Los máximos de riqueza y abundancia se registraron en sitios de altitud intermedia (3 700 m). El factor que mejor explicó la variación del patrón de riqueza y abundancia fue la precipitación. Las abundancias fueron signicativamente mayores durante la estación seca (abril-septiembre). Es posible que los ambientes por encima de 3 500 m deban ser contemplados como áreas prioritarias para la conservación de especies. Esto implica que el manejo de dichos ambientes en el noroeste argentino, considerados desérticos y pobres, debe ser revisado. We describe the pattern of composition and temporal variation of terrestrial small mammal species along an altitudinal gradient in the arid slopes of the Andes in northwestern Argentina. We sampled two elevation transects, from 2 700 to 4 700 meters above sea level, in Jujuy and Salta provinces. Five sampling sites were established every 500 m of altitude on each transect. We established grids of 36 (6x6) Sherman type traps in every site and visited 10 times. We identified the pattern of richness and abundance along the gradient using LOWESS, linear and polynomial regressions and evaluated the influence of explanatory climatic variables using multiple regressions (GLM’s). We captured 235 individuals of nine species with a sampling effort of 4 248 traps/night. The richness and abundance peaked at intermediate elevations (3 700 m). Precipitation was the factor that best explained the variation both the richness and the abundance. The small mammal’s abundance was signicantly higher during the dry season (April-September). It is possible that high elevation environments, above 3 500 m, should be considered as priority areas for species conservation. Las actividades antrópicas producen cambios en el uso del suelo y las condiciones climáticas, influyendo en las comunidades de plantas y animales. Los pequeños mamíferos responden a estos cambios modificando sus abundancias y su diversidad. En la actualidad no existe una línea de base sobre parámetros comunitarios para la mayoría de estas especies y para toda la heterogeneidad ambiental en el noroeste argentino (NOA), lo cual constituye un paso ineludible para dimensionar los efectos de esos cambios. A partir del análisis de material cráneo-dentario recuperado de egagrópilas de aves estrigiformes, caracterizamos la composición y diversidad de los ensambles de pequeños mamíferos en 34 localidades representativas de cinco ecorregiones del NOA. Identificamos 53 ítems presa, la mayoría correspondientes a roedores sigmodontinos. Los ensambles de cada localidad presentaron una composición de especies representativa de cada ecorregión a la que pertenecen. Las localidades con mayor riqueza fueron aquellas situadas en elevaciones intermedias, en áreas de ecotono o aquellas caracterizadas por presentar una cobertura vegetal bien conservada. Un rasgo notable fue la dominancia de especies del género Calomys en el Chaco Seco y la Selva Pedemontana de Yungas. El análisis de agrupamiento de localidades evidenció no sólo la influencia de la topografía y la heterogeneidad ambiental sino también el efecto de las modificaciones en el uso del suelo sobre las comunidades. Este trabajoconstituye un punto de partida sustentado en numerosas localidades representativas de toda la diversidad ambiental en el NOA y es el primero en caracterizar las comunidades de estos mamíferos en la región a partir de evidencias obtenidas de la actividad tróca de aves rapaces. Anthropic activities produce changes in land use and climatic conditions, in uencing biological communities. Small mammals respond to these changes by modifying their abundances and diversity. At present a baseline on population and community parameters for most of these species and all the environmental heterogeneity in Northwestern Argentina (NWA), which is important to measure the effects of these changes, is not available. From the analysis of cranial and dental material recovered from owl pellets, we characterize the composition and diversity of the small mammal assemblages in 34 localities representatives of ve ecoregions in NWA. We identi ed 53 items prey, most of them sigmodontine rodents. The localities showed assemblages with species compositions representatives of each ecoregion. The richness was high in localities situated at intermediate altitudes, in ecotone areas between ecoregions, and in those characterized by showing a well-preserved vegetation cover. A remarkable feature was the clear dominance of species of the genus Calomys in the Dry Chaco and the Yungas Pedemontane Forest. The cluster analysis of the localities showed not only the influence of the topography and the climatic heterogeneity but also the effect of the land use modifications on the small mammal communities. Se conocen 67 especies de murciélagos para la Argentina, cuyos registros distribucionales están bien documentados. Sin embargo, sus patrones distribucionales a escala nacional no han sido estudiados. En este trabajo analizamos la totalidad de los registros validados, con el fin de identificar patrones de riqueza de especies y congruencia distribucional, definidos por la coincidencia de los rangos distribucionales de las especies incluidas en el área de estudio. La mayor riqueza de especies se concentra en la Selva Paranaense y en las Yungas, y se observa una marcada caída de riqueza latitudinalmente. Obtuvimos un total de 47 áreas de congruencia distribucional consenso, cada una asignada a uno de los ocho patrones identificados: las Yungas, el sector norte de las Yungas (anidado con el anterior), el noreste, un patrón disyunto que incluye el noroeste y el noreste del país, la región chaqueña unida a otras regiones circundantes, y la región patagónica. Resultaron caracterizadoras 51 especies (76% del total). Muchos de los patrones encontrados son coincidentes con áreas recuperadas en otros estudios de otros taxones (vegetales y animales), lo que podría sugerir la existencia de áreas con historias comunes para gran parte de la biota de la región. A new species of the genus Pristella Eigenmann, 1908 (Pristella crinogi sp. nov.) is described from the middle rio Tocantins and middle rio São Francisco basins, Brazil. The new species can be diagnosed from its two congeners, Pristella ariporo Conde-Saldaña, Albornoz-Garzón, García-Melo, Villa-Navarro, Mirande, and Lima, 2019 and Pristella maxillaris (Ulrey, 1894), by a combination of color pattern and teeth morphology characters. A phylogenetic analysis of the genus recovered P. crinogi as the sister taxa of P. ariporo. Pristella crinogi, along with P. ariporo, are the first characiform fishes, and one of the first bony fishes, to be reported as presenting a reversed sexual dimorphism, with females presenting a more developed color pattern than males. Comments on theminiaturization of the species, as well as remarks on the biogeography of the genus Pristella, are presented. Une nouvelle espèce de genre Pristella Eigenmann, 1908 (Pristella crinogi sp. nov.) est décrite des bassins versants du rio Tocantins moyen et du rio São Francisco moyen (Brésil). La nouvelle espèce se distingue de ses deux congénères, Pris- tella ariporo Conde-Saldaña, Albornoz-Garzón, García-Melo, Villa-Navarro, Mirande et Lima, 2019 et Pristella maxillaris (Ulrey, 1894), par une combinaison de caractères associés à la coloration et à la morphologie des dents. Une analyse phylogénétique du genre fait ressortir P. crinogi comme taxon-frère de P. ariporo. Pristella crinogi, ainsi que P. ariporo sont les premiers pois- sons characiformes et parmi les premiers poissons osseux pour lesquels un dimorphisme sexuel inversé est signalé, les femelles présentant une coloration plus développée que les mâles. Selenium is an essential element in human and animal metabolism integrated into the catalytic site of glutathione peroxidase (GPX1), an antioxidant enzyme that protects cells from damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Oxidative stress refers the imbalance between ROS and antioxidant defense systems. It generates alterations of DNA, proteins and lipid peroxidation. The imbalance occurs particularly during ischemia and lack of postmortem perfusion. This mechanism is of relevance in transplant organs, affecting their survival. The aim of this research is to evaluate the effect of seleno-methionine (SeMet) as a protective agent against postmortem ischemia injury in transplant organs. Wistar rats were orally administered with SeMet. After sacrifice, liver, heart and kidney samples were collected at different postmortem intervals (PMIs). SeMet administration produced a significant increase of Se concentration in the liver (65%, p < 0.001), heart (40%, p < 0.01) and kidneys (45%, p < 0.05). Levels of the oxidative stress marker malondialdehyde (MDA) decreased significantly compared to control in the heart (0.21 ± 0.04 vs. 0.12 ± 0.02 mmol g−1) and kidneys (0.41 ± 0.02 vs. 0.24 ± 0.03 mmol g−1) in a PMI of 1–12 h (p < 0.01). After SeMet administration for 21 days, a significant increase in GPX1 activity was observed in the liver (80%, p < 0.001), kidneys (74%, p < 0.01) and heart (35%, p < 0.05). Cochicó belongs to “Encadenadas del Oeste” system of lakes being a typical water body of the Pampas region. The most abundant fish species in this lake is the pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) valued due to the quality of its flesh and as a game fish. The aim of this study was to compare the gonadal stages of pejerrey during two consecutive spawning seasons (August to December) in relation to sexual steroids and temperature in this lake. In general, pejerrey gonadal development, the Gonadosomatic index and the plasma levels of estradiol and testosterone fluctuated in relation with temperature. In 2014 samplings, females started to ovulating in early August, with a peak during September-October and ending in December with many of them with atretic oocytes. However, in 2015, a marked delay in maturation was observed with ovulated fish only in October and December. This fact may be because the minors mean temperatures recorded in this year. For males, it was possible to find spermiating animals during the whole spawning season and only arrested animals in December. Unexpectedly, histological gonadal analysis revealed for the first time pejerrey with testis-ova, probably due to the intensive use of agrochemicals in this region. Fil: del Fresno, Pamela Sabrina. Cynomops planirostris (Peters, 1866) was previously known in Argentina only from the provinces of Salta and Jujuy in the northwest and in Misiones in the northeast. Here, we newly report this species from the province of Corrientes and the Humid Chaco ecoregion. We also offer information on the natural history of the species and on the bat assemblage present in the study area. This record increases the number of species of bats known in Corrientes to 34. Se realiza la primera cita de Psalidodon dissensus en cursos de agua de la provincia de Misiones, a partirde ejemplares provenientes del arroyo Yabotí, afluente del río Uruguay, inmerso en la Reserva de BiosferaYabotí. Revalidado de la sinonimia del género Astyanax, Psalidodon incluye 21 nuevas combinaciones para laArgentina de la cuales siete están presentes en los sistemas fluviales de Misiones. La ictiofauna de la provincia,perteneciente a la Provincia Parano‐Platense, se caracteriza por la elevada diversidad y endemismo que laconvierten en territorio de formidable valor biológico y de urgente necesidad de conservación. The first record of Psalidodon dissensus in water courses of the Misiones province, from specimens from the Yabotí stream, a tributary of the Uruguay River, immersed in the Yabotí Biosphere Reserve, is made. Psalidodon, revalidated from the synonymy of the genus Astyanax, includes 21 new combinations for Argentina, of which seven are present in the river systems of Misiones. The ichthyofauna of the province, belonging to the Parano‐Platense Province, is characterized by its high diversity and endemism, making it a territory of formidable biological value and in urgent need of conservation. La urbanización es una de las formas más extremas de cambios en el uso de la tierra y tiene impactos sobre el clima, el agua y la biodiversidad en grandes áreas de todo el planeta. En este trabajo se cuantificaron las islas de calor urbano (ICU) y se relacionaron con características de las ciudades y su entorno a lo largo de gradientes ambientales de la Argentina. Analizamos 55 de las ciudades más grandes del país, ubicadas en 10 ecorregiones, mediante datos satelitales (MODIS) de temperatura de la superficie terrestre, albedo e índices de vegetación (NDVI), y de variables climáticas. La ICU diurna promedio anual de las ciudades argentinas para 2011-2015 fue 0.36±1.99 °C y la nocturna 1.68±0.61 °C. Los principales controles de la intensidad de la ICU fueron el NDVI rural, la precipitación media y la temperatura media durante el día y, en menor medida, la diferencia del albedo durante la noche. Durante el día, algunas ciudades se comportaron como islas de frío urbano (IFU) asociadas a climas áridos o a contextos agrícolas, mientras que durante la noche, todas las ciudades se comportaron como ICU. El efecto atemperador de la vegetación urbana se identificó a partir de la diferencia de NDVI urbano y rural, pero no se observó una relación directa negativa de ICU con NDVI urbano. Los resultados de este trabajo proveen nuevos conocimientos sobre los controles de las ICU y permitiría generar estrategias de desarrollo urbano para mitigar los efectos de la urbanización y mejorar la calidad de vida de la población urbana. Urbanization is one of the most extreme land use changes and has impacts on climate, water and biodiversity in large areas throughout the planet. In this paper, we quantified the urban heat islands (ICU, acronym in Spanish) and its relation to biophysical parameters of the surface of the earth along the main environmental gradients of Argentina. We analyzed 55 of the largest cities in the country, located in 10 ecoregions, using satellite data (MODIS) of land surface temperature, albedo and vegetation indexes (NDVI) and climatic variables. The average annual ICU in the cities for 2011-2015 was 0.36±1.99 °C for the day and 1.68±0.61 °C for the night. The main drivers of the ICU during the day were rural NDVI, mean precipitation and temperature. At night, the main driver was the difference between urban and rural blue albedo. During the day, some cities behaved like urban cold islands (IFU, acronym in Spanish) associated with arid climates or agricultural contexts, while at night, all cities behaved like ICU. The cooling effect of urban vegetation was identified from the difference of urban and rural NDVI, but no direct negative relationship between ICU and urban NDVI was observed. These results provide new insights on the drivers of the ICU and facilitate the generation of urban development strategies to mitigate the effects of urbanization and to improve the quality of life of urban populations. Los herbicidas a base de glifosato (HBG) son los más aplicados a nivel mundial en la producción de maíz. La aparición de malezas resistentes a glifosato condujo a la aplicación repetida de altas dosis. Además de las condiciones ambientales, la presencia de HBG afectan el desarrollo de especies de Aspergillus y la producción de aflatoxina B1(AFB1). El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la influencia de un HBG comercial en el crecimiento de cepas de Aspergillus flavus y Aspergillus parasiticus y su producción de AFB1 en granos de maíz, bajo diferentes condiciones de actividad de agua (aW). Se evaluaron las siguientes concentraciones de ingrediente activo glifosato: 20, 50, 200 y 500 mM. La fase de latencia y la velocidad decrecimiento no se modificaron con 20 y 50 mM (dosis recomendadas a campo) a 0,98 y 0,95 de aW; mientras que el crecimiento disminuyó en todas las condiciones de aW cuando las concentraciones de HBG fueron de 200 y 500 mM. En general, cuando aumentó la concentración de HBG, disminuyó la producción de AFB1. Hubo un aumento significativo en la acumulación de toxina solo en una condición de aW (0,95) a los 21 días con 50 mM de HBG en A. flavus, y con 20 y 50 mM en A. parasiticus. Estos resultados muestran que concentraciones de HBG similares a las dosis recomendadas para uso a campo no incrementan el crecimiento de Aspergillus sección Flavi en granos de maíz, pero sí la producción de AFB1, bajo condiciones favorables de disponibilidad de agua y temperatura. Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) are the main pesticides applied worldwide on maize production. Glyphosate-resistant weeds led to the repeated application of high doses of the pesticide. In addition to environmental conditions, the presence of GBH affects the development of Aspergillus species and aflatoxin B1(AFB1) production under in vitro conditions. The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of a commercial GBH on growth and AFB1 production by Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus strains under different water activity (aW) conditions. The following concentrations of active ingredient glyphosate were evaluated:20, 50, 200 and 500 mM. The lag phase prior to growth and growth rate did not change at 20 and 50 mM (that is, at field recommended doses) at 0.98 and 0.95 aW; however, at increasing GBH concentrations, between 200 and 500 mM, the growth rate decreased at all aW conditions. In general, as the GBH concentration increased, AFB1production decreased. However, a significant increase in toxin accumulation was found only at one of the aW conditions (0.95) at 21days with 50 mM of GBH in A. flavus and 20 and 50 mM of GBH in A. parasiticus. These results show that, even though Aspergillus section Flavi growth did not increase, AFB1 production increased on maize grains at GBH concentrations similar to those of field recommended doses under favorable water availability and temperature conditions. A diferencia de otras secciones más descriptivas, la sección Discusión de un artículo científico requiere un nivel de elaboración mayor. En esta sección se espera que se analicen los resultados en función de los objetivos y las hipótesis del estudio, se comparen estos resultados con los obtenidos en estudios previos y se establezcan los aportes del estudio al tema de investigación. Sin embargo, y a pesar de estos objetivos, los autores se enfrentan a diferentes problemas o incertidumbres tanto en el momento de escribir la discusión de un artículo propio como en el de orientar a los estudiantes cuando comienzan a escribir sus primeros manuscritos. La manera de vincular los resultados con las hipótesis, el orden en que se desarrollan los diferentes aspectos de la discusión y la posibilidad y grado de especulación científica son algunas de las incertidumbres que emergen al momento de abordar la sección. En este trabajo se presenta un método para desarrollar la sección Discusión de un artículo científico. La propuesta se basa en el análisis de hipótesis, en conceptos epistemológicos y en una división interna según diferentes niveles de análisis. Se propone un primer nivel de discusión interna y contrastación de hipótesis, un segundo nivel de discusión comparativa con el conocimiento existente del mismo orden y un tercer nivel en el que se discuten hipótesis en diferentes niveles de organización biológica. Estas propuestas pretenden guiar el desarrollo de una discusión y dar solución a los inconvenientes planteados al hacer explícita la contrastación de las hipótesis, ordenar la discusión e incentivar la especulación científica bajo criterios que limitan su exceso. Unlike other more descriptive sections, the discussion section of a scientific article requires a higher level of elaboration. This section is expected to discuss the results in terms of the objectives and hypotheses of the study, compare these results with those obtained in previous studies and establish the contributions of the study to the research topic. However, despite these objectives, the authors face different problems or uncertainties both when writing the discussion of their own article and in guiding students when they start to write their first manuscripts. The way in which the results are linked to the hypotheses, the order in which the different aspects of the discussion are developed and the possibility and degree of scientific speculation are some of the uncertainties that emerge when approaching the section. This paper presents a method for developing the discussion section of a scientific article. The proposal is based on the analysis of hypotheses, on epistemological concepts and on an internal division according to different levels of analysis. A first level of internal discussion and hypothesis testing, a second level of comparative discussion with existing knowledge of the same order, and a third level in which hypotheses are discussed at different levels of biological organization are proposed. These proposals are intended to guide the development of a discussion and gives solution to the inconveniences posed by making explicit the testing of hypotheses, ordering the discussion and encouraging scientific speculation under criteria that limit their excess. Introduction- The importance of an immediate tool to help patients and prevent viral diffusion of new pneumonia caused by 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV or SARS-CoV-2) that causes the disease COVID-19 becomes evident. Recent articles have reported on body site-specific SARS-CoV-2 infection, showing very active replication in the throat and upper respiratory tract when symptoms were still mild, and thus being efficient in viral transmission in sputum. Material and Methods- An alternative that may be feasible is to resort to scientific studies that demonstrate the antiviral potential of medicinal plants species through in-vitro and in-vivo experiments to alleviate symptoms and prevent the spread of contagion. A literature search in Scopus and PubMed on herbs and foods with antiviral properties was performed. Results- This resulted in hundreds of publications, showing a diversity of plants with effect on different virus infections. This article focuses on plants which are of common use which could act against COVID-19. Conclusions- Herbs and foods with demonstrated antiviral potential have been identified, which could limit SARS-CoV-2 spreading by interfering on ACE2 protein on infection sites. The analysis of transdisciplinary knowledge allows us to connect previous research on the action of common plants and foods on viruses to limit the replication of SARS-CoV-2 in the throat and upper respiratory tract. Premise of research. Plant silica content depends on the phylogenetic position of a taxon; however, biological or ecological factors may also affect it. In this work, we analyzed data on silicophytolith content from 105 species of South America, examining, in a phylogenetic context, its relationship with anatomy and ecological features such as life cycle, growth form, plant origin, and environmental preferences. Methodology. Data on the silicophytolith content and bioecological features of the species were obtained from published and unpublished sources. The relations between systematics, silica content, and bioecological variables were analyzed through measurements of phylogenetic signal and phylogenetic generalized least squares regressions. Pivotal results. Eighty-six percent of the species produced between 0.38% and 19% of silicophytolith dry weight in leaves. Silica content was variable between and within clades. Values of l and K indicate a low phylogenetic signal for the variable silica content. Dicotyledons accumulated silica in typical epidermal cells, and a few families also stored it in cystoliths. Most of the monocot families showed high silicophytolith contents and a high diversity of silicified cells. Plant origin affected the silica contents: exotic species accumulated more than native ones. On the other hand, no statistical relationship was found between silica content and the other ecological variables. Conclusions. Silicophytolith accumulation is a common feature in most of the species studied. The low phylogenetic signal of silica content is explained by inter-and intraclade variability, which in turn supports the hypothesis that silicophytolith accumulation is a homoplasic character among plants. On the basis of the overall analysis of silicophytolith content and tissue distribution, high content could be related to the specific accumulation mechanisms and roles of silica. The origin of the plant was the only bioecological variable that influenced plant silica content. We provide an updated checklist of birds of a unique landscape in northeastern Argentina, which is characterized by three isolated, rocky outcrops and their surrounding agroecosystem. We recorded 188 bird species, including nine that are globally or nationally threatened. We highlight the presence of several grassland-specialist birds of conservation concern. Of the species recorded, 80.6% are residents and 17.7% are migrants. The heterogeneity of the landscape and its structural complexity accounts the existence of a high avian species diversity, which includes both generalists and specialists. This study confirms the conservation value of this ecosystem, due both to the rocky outcrops and grassland matrix. Grasslands are one of the most threatened biomes in the world. Micro-organisms have showed the ability to produce biologically active compounds associated with neurotransmission in higher organisms. In particular, serotonin- and melatonin-producing microbes are valuable sources for the development of eco-friendly bioproducts. Serotonin and melatonin are indoleamines that have received special attention due to their positive effects on human health. These biomolecules exert a critical role in several physiological or pathological processes, including some mental and neurological disorders. This article includes a review of the microbial production of serotonin and melatonin, their functions in micro-organisms and their potential uses as therapeutic and/or preventive agents to improve human health. A description of the quantification methods employed to detect indoleamines and the evidence found concerning their microbial production at laboratory and industrial scale—for application in biotechnological products—is also provided. The microbial ability to synthesize beneficial indoleamines should be further studied and harnessed, to allow the development of sustainable bioprocesses to produce foods and pharmaceuticals for human health. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has caused unprecedented global health and economic crises. Several vaccine approaches and repurposed drugs are currently under evaluation for safety and efficacy. However, none of them have been approved for COVID-19 yet. Meanwhile, several nMAbs targeting SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein are in different stages of development and clinical testing. Preclinical studies have shown that cocktails of potent nMAbs targeting the receptor binding site of SARS-CoV-2, as well as broad-nMAbs targeting conserved regions within the virus spike, might be effective for the treatment and prophylaxis of COVID-19. Currently, several clinical trials have started to test safety, tolerability, PKs and efficacy of these nMAbs. One paramount limitation for the use of nMAbs in clinical settings is the production of large amounts of MAbs and the high costs related to it. We analyzed the effect of different tillage systems on soils under different land-use histories, on biological properties of soil during one year. The experiment was carried out at a Petrocalcic Argiudoll of Tres Arroyos (Buenos Aires, Argentina). The specific aim was to describe and compare the soil organic carbon (SOC), the soil basal respiration (BR) and the activities of the enzyme dehydrogenase, urease and acid-phosphomonoesterase under zero and conventional tillage on soils under pasture and intensive agriculture. The SOC concentration was highest in summer (postharvest) independently of tillage system or land-use history. However, in autumn the plots under conventional tillage showed higher values of SOC than those with zero tillage, independently of land-use history. The BR had a significant benefit in favour of summer pasture soils. The effect of land-use history or the tillage system on the enzymes activity was dependent of sampling season. Therefore, the soil enzymes were more sensible than SOC and BR. In temporal studies the effect of sampling season is strongest that others factors as tillage systems or land-use history. Salicylic acid (SAL) has recently been shown to induce biofilm formation in Staphylococcus aureus and to affect the expression of virulence factors. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of SAL on the regulatory agr system and its impact on S. aureus biofilm formation. The agr quorum-sensing system, which is a central regulator in S. aureus pathogenicity, plays a pivotal role in the dispersal of S. aureus mature biofilms and contributes to the creation of new colonization sites. Here, we demonstrate that SAL impairs biofilm dispersal by interfering with agr expression. As revealed by our work, protease and surfactant molecule production is diminished, and bacterial cell autolysis is also negatively affected by SAL. Furthermore, as a consequence of SAL treatment, the S. aureus biofilm matrix revealed the lack of extracellular DNA. In silico docking and simulation of molecular dynamics provided evidence for a potential interaction of AgrA and SAL, resulting in reduced activity of the agr system. In conclusion, SAL stabilized the mature S. aureus biofilms, which may prevent bacterial cell dissemination. Summary The proper subcellular localization of defense factors is an important part of the plant immune system. A key component for systemic resistance, lipid transfer protein (LTP)‐like AZI1, is needed for the systemic movement of the priming signal azelaic acid (AZA) and a pool of AZI1 exists at the site of AZA production, the plastid envelope. Moreover, after systemic defense‐triggering infections, the proportion of AZI1 localized to plastids increases. However, AZI1 does not possess a classical plastid transit peptide that can explain its localization. Instead, AZI1 uses a bipartite N‐terminal signature that allows for its plastid targeting. Furthermore, the kinases MPK3 and MPK6, associated with systemic immunity, promote the accumulation of AZI1 at plastids during priming induction. Our results indicate the existence of a mode of plastid targeting possibly related to defense responses., Significance Statement In this work, we studied how AZI1, a key factor for plant systemic immunity, localizes to plastids. We show that AZI1 belongs to a unique class of signal‐anchored proteins and that the defense‐associated kinases MPK3/6 affect its targeting/trafficking, which in turn might determine the magnitude of systemic movement of defense signal(s) for resistance and priming induction.

The leaf-eared mouse, Phyllotis xanthopygus (Waterhouse 1837) is a widely distributed sigmodontine rodent in South America, with populations ranging from central Peru to southern Argentina and Chile. Previous morphological and molecular contributions have suggested that P. xanthopygus represents a species complex. In order to characterize and disclose this cryptic species complex, we perform a molecular genetic/phylogenetic analysis of representative samples across its geographical distribution. Phylogenetic analyses were based on sequences of cytochrome-b gene (801 base pairs; n = 114 specimens) and analysed by maximum likelihood and Bayesian approaches. We also employed a Bayesian implementation of the Poisson tree processes (bPTP) as a unilocus species delimitation method. Results from our phylogenetic analyses retrieve eight well-supported clades. Five of these clades belong to populations known as P. xanthopygus s.l., which were paraphyletic to the closely related species P. bonariensis, P. caprinus, and P. limatus, displaying strong genetic divergences (>8%). The (bPTP) analyses recovered ten species within P. xanthopygus s.l. plus related forms (i.e. P. bonariensis, P. caprinus, and P. limatus). Our results, coupled with chromosomal and morphological evidences, support the recognition of these clades at the species level and provide a new framework to characterize the leaf-eared mice complex. BACKGROUND: The Diaporthe/Phomopsis complex (D/P) is a group of soybean seed-borne fungi. The use of chemical fungicides, either for seed treatment or during the crop cycle, is the most adopted practice for treating fungal diseases caused by this complex. Worldwide, there is a search for alternative seed treatments that are less harmful to the environment than chemicals. Non-thermal plasma (NTP) is a novel seed treatment technology for pathogen removal. This research aimed to evaluate the effects of NTP on the in vitro performance of pure cultures of Diaporthe longicolla and elucidate the mechanisms underlying these effects. RESULTS: Active D. longicolla mycelium, growing in vitro, was exposed to different NTP treatments, employing a dielectric barrier discharge arrangement with different carrier gases (N2 or O2). Fungal growth, fresh biomass and colony appearance were negatively affected by plasma treatments (TN3 and TO3). Lipid peroxidation and antioxidant activities were higher in plasma-treated colonies comparison with non-exposed colonies (control). Fungal asexual spores (conidia) were also exposed to NTP, showing high susceptibility. CONCLUSION: Exposure of D. longicolla colonies to NTP severely compromised fungal biology. Water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) and domestic cattle (Bos taurus) are closely related species. However, embryo transfer interspecies has been attempted without any success. The failure in hybrid embryo-implantation is associated with the glycocode in the maternal-fetal interface. Glycosylation patterns have been studied in different species of ruminants; however, in B. bubalis, only the binucleated cells (BNC) have been analyzed. This glycocode is essential for a successful embryo-implantation and can be defined by Lectin-Histochemistry (LHC). The aim of this study is to compare the glycosylation pattern of placenta and uterus in water buffaloes and cattle by LHC. Tissue samples of placenta and uterus from pregnant Mediterranean female water buffaloes (Buf1) and Angus cows (Bov1) were analyzed. All animals were euthanized at 98 days of gestation. LHC was carried out using twelve lectins (Con A, LCA, PSA, sWGA, PHA-e, SBA, UEA-1, WGA, RCA-1, PNA, DBA, BSA-1). The intensity of lectin binding was semiquantitatively scored using a scale of 0 (negative) to 3 (strongly positive). Difference between species was found in trophoblast layer by PSA, SWGA, PNA and BSA-1, in BNC, and in the mononuclear cells by LCA, PSA, PHA-e, DBA, BSA-1, PNA. In utero, differences in the apical cellular membrane and the secretion of glands were identified by DBA and RCA-1, and in the cytoplasm of those glandular epithelial cells by PHA-e, BSA-1, WGA, and SBA. In both species, BNC presented a strong positive reaction with DBA and SBA, a moderate response by LCA, PHA-e, BSA-1 and PNA lectin, and a low reaction by PSA, UEA-1, SWGA, WGA, Con A and RCA-1. The results found in this study suggest that although both species are closely related, glycosylation patterns in the placenta and uterus are different, thus providing a possible reason for embryo transfer not being possible between these species. Los pastizales naturales del sudoeste de la provincia de Buenos Aires (Argentina), están degradados como resultado del sobrepastoreo y de la expansión de la agricultura, que han generado un fuerte impacto en la biodiversidad e integridad del ecosistema. La restauración productiva propone reincorporar especies nativas a zonas degradadas para restaurar funciones ecológicas claves y a la vez generar beneficios socio-económicos y productivos. Las leguminosas (Fabaceae) son un grupo funcional particularmente útil ya que presentan múltiples características de interés agronómico, como la capacidad de fijar nitrógeno, la calidad forrajera y su potencial melífero, entre otras. Sin embargo, la información acerca del cultivo y utilización de leguminosas herbáceas nativas del centro de Argentina es prácticamente inexistente. El conocimiento de la dormición seminal en estas especies y de los tratamientos pregerminativos para interrumpirla, constituyen un primer paso fundamental para su utilización. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar diferentes tratamientos pregerminativos para la germinación de Rhynchosia bicentrica (Rb) y R. senna (Rs), dos especies de leguminosas herbáceas nativas con potencialidad para utilizarse en la restauración de pastizales naturales degradados. Los tratamientos ensayados fueron escarificación física manual y mecánica, escarificación térmica por inmersión en agua y por exposición a aire caliente a diferentes temperaturas y escarificación química con ácido sulfúrico. Los resultados obtenidos indican que ambas especies necesitan tratamientos pregerminativos que rompan la cubierta seminal para iniciar la germinación, ya que presentaron porcentajes de dormición seminal física de 90±5,6% (Rb) y 60,8±13,5% (Rs). Los tratamientos de escarificación física manual y mecánica fueron efectivos para aumentar el poder germinativo respecto del control en ambas especies. Para Rb también fue efectiva la escarificación térmica por exposición a agua o aire a temperatura constante de 60 y 70°C por una hora. Para Rs también fue efectiva la escarificación térmica por exposición a agua a temperatura constante de 70°C por 30 minutos. Discutimos algunas ventajas y desventajas asociadas a los métodos ensayados y proponemos enfatizar en alternativas que sean aplicables a escalas mayores que las experimentales, destacando la escarificación física a través de escarificadores mecánicas y los tratamientos de exposición a aire caliente. The natural grasslands of southwestern Buenos Aires province (Argentina) are degraded as a result of overgrazing and the expansion of agriculture, which have generated a strong impact on biodiversity and ecosystem integrity. Productive restoration proposes the reincorporation of native species to degraded areas to restore key ecological functions and at the same time generate socio-economic and productive benefits. Legumes (Fabaceae) are a particularly useful functional group since they have multiple characteristics of agronomic interest, such as their ability to fix nitrogen, their forage quality and their meliferous potential, among others. However, information about the cultivation and use of native herbaceous legumes from central Argentina is practically non-existent. Knowledge on seminal dormancy in these species and the pregerminative treatments needed to interrupt it constitute a fundamental first step for its use. The objective of this study was to evaluate different pregerminative treatments for the germination of Rhynchosia bicentrica (Rb) and R. senna (Rs), two native herbaceous legumes species with potential to be used in the restoration of degraded grasslands. The treatments tested were manual and mechanical physical scarification, thermal scarification by immersion in water and by exposure to hot air at different temperatures and chemical scarification with sulfuric acid. The obtained results indicate that both species need pregerminative treatments that break the seminal cover to initiate the germination, since they presented percentages of physical seminal dormancy of 90 ± 5.6% (Rb) and 60.8 ± 13.5% (Rs). The manual and mechanical physical scarification treatments were effective to increase the germinative power with respect to the control in both species. For Rb, thermal scarification by exposure to water or air at constant temperature of 60 and 70°C for one hour was also effective. For Rs, thermal scarification was also effective by exposure to water at constant temperature of 70° C for 30 minutes. We discuss some advantages and disadvantages associated with the tested methods and we propose to emphasize alternatives that are applicable to scales greater than the experimental ones, highlighting the physical scarification through mechanical scarifiers and hot air exposure treatments. Identification and naming of fossil and subfossil organisms are not easy tasks. We are in the midst of a paradigm shift in how NPP taxa are named, driven in large part by 1) molecular clock taxonomic efforts in the past 25 years and 2) greater connectivity among scientific communities. Concurrent with this is the understanding that sometimes a name is not necessary, and identifying acronyms, pending further taxonomic work, or where fragmentary or synapomorphic remains cannot be assigned to their original taxon, are sufficient. The overarching goal of the paradigm shift is to maintain stability of the code and avoid increasing the number of names that refer to single taxa. The history and current state of nomenclature for non-pollen palynomorphs groups, highlighting recent developments with dinoflagellates and fungi, is given, and recommendations for a unified approach to NPP nomenclature through geological time are made. In mountain ecosystems, temperature and precipitation change along elevation and determine the lower and upper limits of tree species which form forests. Early life performance of tree species has been assessed along elevational gradients as a proxy for several environmental variables. Here, we attempt to answer the following question: How does elevation provenance influence seed mass, viability, and germination of Queñoa (Polylepis spp.)? We worked with four species from two contrasting environments from northwest Argentina. We gathered seeds along elevation gradients, seeds were weighed, tested for viability (Triphenyltetrazoliumchlorid; TTC) and germination percentage in a controlled environment. The analysis was performed using Generalized Linear Models (GLM). We found low germination percentages in all species, probably related to low seed viability. The two species from humid environments had lower seed mass and higher germination percentages than the two species from dry environments. The effect of elevational provenance negatively affected the germination of two species, while the other two species were not affected. We conclude that although the four species studied belong to the same genus, their early life characteristics differ between environments and along elevational gradients according to species. Trends regarding future temperatures suggest increases in germination for two of our study species and no effects on the other two species., En los ecosistemas de montaña, la temperatura y la precipitación cambian a lo largo de la elevación y determinan los límites superior e inferior de las especies de árboles que forman los bosques. El rendimiento en la vida temprana de las especies de árboles de montaña se ha evaluado a lo largo de gradientes de elevación como proxy de varias variables ambientales. En este trabajo contestamos la siguiente pregunta: ¿Cómo influye la elevación sobre la masa, la viabilidad y la germinación de las semillas de Queñoa (Polylepis spp)? Trabajamos con cuatro especies de dos ambientes contrastantes del noroeste argentino. Recolectamos semillas a lo largo de gradientes de elevación y probamos la viabilidad (cloruro de trifeniltetrazolio; TTC) y la germinación (ambiente controlado). Pesamos las semillas e incluimos la variable individuo para desarrollar modelos lineales generalizados (GLM). Encontramos bajos porcentajes de germinación en todas las especies, probablemente relacionados con la baja viabilidad de la semilla. Encontramos diferencias significativas entre los porcentajes de germinación de ambientes contrastantes. El efecto de la procedencia elevacional afectó negativamente la germinación de dos especies, mientras que las otras dos especies no se vieron afectadas. Concluimos que aunque las cuatro especies estudiadas pertenecen al mismo género, sus características de vida temprana difieren entre ambientes y a lo largo de gradientes de elevación según la especie. Fungi associated with leaf-cutter ants (LCAs) play a fundamental role in Neotropical ecosystems. The association with fungi allows LCAs to be the dominant herbivores and in this way influence ecological processes. In order to know the taxonomic diversity of fungal symbionts associated with LCAs, ten sampling sites were selected corresponding to the Chaqueño Serrano district and the Algarrobo district. Samples of fungi grown by leaf cutter ants were collected, a part of the fungal material was grown in potato agar culture medium with dextrose and another was stored in a CTAB buffer. Subsequently, amplifications of the ITS1, ITS2 and 5.8S ribosomal gene were carried out. A phylogenetic analysis (Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian) was performed with the sequences. Results show that the leaf cutter ants in the sampled region cultivate symbiotic fungi of two well-differentiated phylogenetic clades (known as A and B). The agar cultures showed a slow growth, with development of globose structures named gongylidia that are grouped together forming staphyla (clusters). Among the ants studied, Acromyrmex striatus is associated with fungi from both clades. In the Espinal forest (Algarrobo district) A. striatus was found associated with clade B fungi (Leucocoprinus sp.) and in the Chaco Serrano (Chaqueño Serrano district) with clade A fungi (Leucocoprinus gongylophorus). While Acromyrmex crassispinus and A. heyeri included in the study exclusively cultivate L. gongylophorus from clade A fungi regardless of the region they inhabit. En este trabajo se registran helmintos parásitos de Phyllotis xanthopygus (Rodentia, Cricetidae) para la provincia de La Rioja, República Argentina: nematodes Syphacia phyllotios (Oxyuridae), Trichuris pardinasi (Trichuridae), y tres taxa de cestodes indeterminados (un adulto y dos en estado inmaduro). Se describe por primera vez a Syphacia phyllotios como parásito de P. xanthopygus, correspondiendo este al primer registro de la especie para el país. In this article we report parasitic helminths of Phyllotis xanthopygus (Rodentia, Cricetidae) for La Rioja Province, Argentina: Syphacia phyllotios (Oxyuridae), Trichuris pardinasi (Trichuridae) nematods, and three indeterminate cestodes taxa (one adult and two inmatures stages). In the framework of the taxonomic treatment of the family Loganiaceae for the Argentinean Flora, it was necessary to lectotypify 12 names described for the genus Spigelia. On the other hand, Spigelia beccabungoides, cited as endemic to the Flora of Paraguay is synonymized under Justicia comata (Acanthaceae). En el marco del tratamiento taxonómico de la familia Loganiaceae para la Flora Argentina, se encontró la necesidad de lectotipificar 12 nombres descritos para el género Spigelia. Acrocladium y Lepyrodon son géneros de musgos pleurocárpicos de distribución austral. En la región fueguina de Argentina crecen las especies A. auriculatum y L. lagurus, como representantes dominantes de estos géneros. Dado que no hay descripciones detalladas sobre las esporas de estas especies, se plantea como objetivo de este trabajo, hacer un análisis comparativo para establecer el valor diagnóstico que las esporas aportan a la sistemática de estos taxa. Las esporas se estudiaron a partir de ejemplares de herbario, con Microscopio Óptico y Microscopio Electrónico de Barrido. Los resultados aportaron diferencias entre los rangos de tamaño y el tipo de ornamentación de las esporas. Estas características contribuirían a reforzar las diferencias morfológicas entre las especies, destacando el rol de las esporas como una importante fuente de información sistemática y biológica para estos taxa., Acrocladium and Lepyrodon are pleurocarpic moss genera of Southern distribution. The species A. auriculatum and L. lagurus inhabit in the Fuegian region of Argentina as the dominant representatives of these genera. A detail description of their spores has not been reported up to now. The objective of this study is to compare the morphological characteristics of the spores and establish their diagnostic value in the systematic of these taxa. The spores were studied from herbarium specimens, with Light Microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope. The results showed differences between the size ranges and the type of spore ornamentation. These characteristics would add to and contribute to reinforce the morphological differences between species, highlighting the role of spores as an important source of systematic and biological information for these taxa., Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo

Endometriosis is an often painful disease in reproductive-aged women, in which endometrial-like tissue grows outside the uterine cavity. Since the limited current therapeutic alternatives fail in alleviating the symptoms and based on our previous research in in vitro models using the same compounds as the ones used in the present study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of urolithins A (UA) and B (UB) on the growth and survival of endometriotic-like lesions in a murine model of endometriosis. Female BALB/C mice were surgically induced with endometriosis and treated with 2.5 mg kg-1 day-1 intraperitoneal UA or UB. The mice were monitored daily and weighed and the estrous stage was determined. After 28 days of treatment, lesions were counted, measured, excised, and fixed. Both urolithins proved not to affect the estrous cycle or body weight of the mice. UA completely prevented endometriotic-like lesions, while UB diminished the implant volume (p < 0.05). Treatment also reduced epithelial and stromal cell proliferation within the implants (p < 0.001 and p < 0.01, respectively) and apoptosis was enhanced (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01, respectively). These results are promising and reveal that urolithins A and B, separately, have a beneficial effect on the overall endometriotic growth without affecting the body weight or estrous cycle. El estudio del xilema secundario de Bulnesia retama a lo largo de un gradiente de aridez permite encontrar variaciones entre los diferentes tipos celulares del xilema que predicen la tolerancia de esta especie a la aridez. El objetivo de este trabajo fue realizar una descripción anatómica del xilema secundario mediante cortes transversales, analizar la variación de rasgos considerados de importancia para la supervivencia en ambientes áridos, como el porcentaje de vasos, fibras y parénquima y el grosor de la pared de fibras, y también la densidad del leño. Las muestras se obtuvieron de las ramas primarias de plantas provenientes de cuatro localidades a lo largo de un gradiente de aridez (Médanos Grandes, Bermejo, Marayes y Chepes, provincias de San Juan y La Rioja, Argentina). Se realizaron cortes transversales, se observaron con microscopio óptico y se obtuvieron imágenes digitales que se analizaron con el programa ImageJ. Los resultados indican que los vasos son pequeños, numerosos y distribuidos de manera diagonal; el parénquima axial es de tipo apotraqueal difuso. Asimismo, se observó que hacia los sitios más áridos, el área total de fibras aumenta significativamente y el área de parénquima disminuye. Por otro lado, el área total de vasos no presentó cambios, mientras que el grosor de pared de fibra aumentó levemente con el incremento de la aridez. Estos rasgos sugieren que B. retama posee un leño altamente tolerante a la sequía presentando plasticidad fenotípica a lo largo del gradiente de aridez, registrando además una madera xeromórfica de elevada densidad. The study of secondary xylem of Bulnesia retama along an aridity gradient allowed finding variations among different xylem cell types that can be used to predict tolerance of this species to aridity. The aim of this work was to carry out an anatomical description of the secondary xylem through cross sections, to analyse the variation of traits considered to be important for survival in arid environments, such as the percentage of vessels, fibres and parenchyma, fibre wall thickness, and wood density. The samples were obtained from primary branches of plants from four locations along an aridity gradient (Médanos Grandes, Bermejo, Marayes and Chepes, San Juan and La Rioja provinces, Argentina). Cross sections were observed with optical microscope and resulting digital images were analysed with ImageJ software. The results indicate that vessels are small, numerous and diagonally distributed, axial parenchyma is apotracheal diffuse. A significant increase in total fibre area and a decrease in parenchyma area with increases in aridity were observed. Total vessel area did not show any changes, while fibre wall thickness increased slightly with aridity. These traits suggest that B. retama has a highly drought-tolerant wood showing phenotypic plasticity along the aridity gradient, also registering a high-density xeromorphic wood. Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is an endogenously produced gasotransmitter that has rapidly emerged as an active signalling component of several plant processes, stomatal movement regulation among them. The guard cells (GCs), pairs of cells that neighbour the stomatal pores, transduce endogenous and environmental signals, through signalling network, to control stomatal pore size. In this complex network, which has become a model system for plant signalling, few highly connected components form a core that links most of the pathways. The evidence summarized in this insight, on the interplay between H2S and different key components of the GC networks, points towards H2S as a regulator of the GC core signalling pathway. The aim of this study was the detection of Rickettsia in ticks of sigmodontine rodents from Northeastern Buenos Aires province, Argentina. A total of 222 rodents were captured collecting 10 ticks identified as Ixodes loricatus Neumann, which were analysed by the real-time PCR and conventional PCR techniques. DNA of Rickettsia bellii was detected in nymphs obtained from the rodents Akodon azarae Fischer, Oxymycterus rufus Fischer and Deltamys kempi Thomas. This is the first report of R. bellii infecting I. loricatus in Argentina and the first report of this bacterium associated with ticks of sigmodontine rodents. El objetivo de este estudio fue detectar Rickettsia en garrapatas de roedores sigmodontinos del Noreste de la provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Se capturaron 222 roedores colectando 10 garrapatas identificadas como Ixodes loricatus Neumann, las cuales fueron analizadas por las técnicas de PCR real-time y PCR convencional. En este artículo estudio la morfología botánica desde la perspectiva de los wichís del Gran Chaco. Además, estudio aquí el léxico de las partes de las plantas desde un marco etnobiológico con fines más amplios, vinculados al entendimiento de los procesos y las motivaciones que están detrás de las clasificaciones vernáculas de la naturaleza. Así pues, intento responder a las siguientes preguntas: ¿cómo describen, entienden y nombran los wichís las partes de las plantas?, ¿cómo es el proceso de asignación de nombres? ¿son criterios morfológicos, funcionales y/o posicionales los que subyacen a lo anterior? En base a datos primarios, describo y analizo 38 términos de partes vegetales, identificando homonimias, partes distintivas de las plantas, criterios y conceptos subyacentes en la partonimia y nomenclatura. Como conclusiones encuentro que: a) no existe un término vernáculo para la categoría “planta”, aunque lhile podría estar adquiriendo esa nueva acepción; b) para especies con gran relevancia cultural existen términos específicos y sufijos para derivar el nombre de los frutos, por lo que el análisis terminológico resulta una vía útil para identificar especies y recursos de importancia local; c) hay una idea de repetición o reiteración en la estructura general de una planta que se refleja en la forma de nombrar a ciertas partes; d) hay criterios morfológicos, funcionales, posicionales y simbólicos detrás de la asignación de nombres de partes; y e) la nomenclatura de las partes de las plantas puede reflejar la pérdida de saberes y/o prácticas sobre especies silvestres. In this article I study the plant morphology from the perspective of the Wichi people of the Gran Chaco. I specifically study here the lexicon of plant parts with wider aims in mind, which are related to the comprehension of motivations and processes behind vernacular classifications of nature. Being ethnobiology the frame of the research, I try to answer how Wichi people describe, name and understand plant parts; how is the process of assigning names; and if morphological, functional and/or positional criteria underlie this action. Using primary data, I describe and analyse 38 terms that name plant parts, identifying homonymies, parts that are distinctive of plants, criteria and concepts underlying partonomy and nomenclature. I conclude that: a) there isn't a vernacular term for the category "plant", although lhile may be acquiring this new meaning; b) for culturally relevant species, there are specific terms and suffixes to derivate the name of fruits, thus the analysis of terms is a useful way to identify species and resources of local importance; c) there is an idea of repetition or reiteration in the general plant structure which is reflected in the form of naming some plant parts; d) there are morphological, functional, positional and symbolic criteria behind the names of plant parts; and e) nomenclature of plant parts can reflect the loss of practices and/or knowledge on some wild species. The Xenarthra are one of the least studied mammalian groups in Honduras. Their ecology, natural history, and distribution in the country are poorly known. Here we compile and discuss, for the first time, the available information about the seven species of Xenarthra that occur in Honduras. We also present new distribution records and comment on their main threats. The lack of specific scientific studies, poaching, illegal traffic, cultural beliefs, and deforestation are among the main threats to xenarthrans in Honduras. Xenarthra es uno de los grupos de mamíferos menos estudiados en Honduras, y de los que menos se sabe sobre su ecología, historia natural y distribución en el país. Aquí recopilamos y discutimos, por primera vez, la información disponible de cada una de las siete especies de Xenarthra que ocurren en Honduras.
