BACKGROUND: Pine wilt disease (PWD), a major international quarantined forest pest, causes serious ecological and economic damage to Pinus species in Asia and Europe. In China, PWD has spread northeasterly and northwesterly beyond its original northern limits. Consequently, an evaluation of the insect vector‐mediated occurrence and potential diffusion of PWD is needed to identify important transmission routes and control the spread of disease. RESULTS: An optimized MaxEnt model was used to assess the current and future geographical distribution of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus and its insect vectors in China. The predicted suitable area for B. xylophilus colonization is currently 212.32 × 104 km2 and mainly concentrated in Central, East, Southwest and South China, although is anticipated to include the northwestern regions of China in the future. As for the insect vectors, Monochamus alternatus and M. saltuarius are expected to spread toward the northwest and southwest, respectively. The maximum predicted dispersion area of PWD mediated by M. alternatus, M. saltuarius and both species was 91.85 × 104, 218.76 × 104 and 29.99 × 104 km2, respectively, with potential diffusion areas being anticipated to increase in the future. Both the suitable probabilities and areas of B. xylophilus and its insect vectors were found to vary substantially along the latitudinal gradient, with the latitudinal range of these species being predicted to expand in the future. CONCLUSION: This is the first study to investigate the potential diffusion areas of PWD mediated by insect vectors in China, and our finding will provide a vital theoretical reference and empirical basis for developing more effective management strategies for the control of PWD in China. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. Residual soils, residues from potato and beet processing, are one of the most important pathways for the spread of quarantine pests in potato and beet cultivation. In terms of plant quarantine, residual soils must be free from quarantine pests in order to be able to return them to agricultural habitats. Cyst nematodes, which are highly persistent to environmental influences, are particularly challenging. In the GlobRISK project, the anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) developed in the Netherlands was transferred and optimized as an alternative to the complete flooding of entire fields (inundation). ASD was tested for the specific application of disinfesting residual soils from regulated potato cyst nematodes (Globodera pallida and G. rostochiensis) and non-regulated beet cyst nematodes (Hetereodera schachtii). In this study, the effect of ASD on cyst nematodes was investigated at three levels: in microplots under natural environmental conditions, in mesocosms of 15 L buckets in the climate chamber and in microcosms in the laboratory. In the microplot experiment, higher temperatures were achieved by incorporating and foil covering with the product Herbie®72 (Thatchtec/Soilwise), which was specially developed for ASD, compared to uncovered plots including controls without Herbie®72. However, the development of anaerobic conditions in the treated plots was incomplete due to shallow incorporation of the substrate, insufficient soil moisture and incomplete foil cover. As a result, the reduction in hatching rate of G. pallida was only slightly reduced at 98% hatch reduction could only be achieved for soils from three different locations in mesocosms with a volume of 15 L of soil when the substrate Herbie®72 was incorporated, under conditions of complete air exclusion combined with compaction and water saturation of the soils treated. This could be also shown for the substrate mustard seed meal from Brassica juncea, which was incorporated as an alternative to Herbie®72. In summary, it can be concluded that ASD (anaerobic soil disinfestation) and biofumigation using mustard seed meal instead of Herbie®72 under controlled conditions represent an effective alternative to inundation.

In this paper, the framework and procedures for Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) in Germany are outlined from their beginning in the late 1990s, emphasizing its critical role in protecting plant health against new pest introductions through trade and transport. It highlights the legal requirements and prohibitions established to prevent the introduction and spread of pests, detailing the systematic scientific assessment of the likelihood of pest entry and establishment, as well as the potential damage they may cause to plants and ecosystems. The evolution of PRA procedures is discussed, noting the development of "short info sheets" for rapid, very short assessments and the introduction of standardized templates for Express PRAs. Based on standards of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), these enable quick evaluations of new pests. Legislative frameworks, including the German Plant Protection Act and EU regulations, in particular the Regulation (EU) 2016/2031 on protective measures against pests of plants, govern the PRA process, mandating assessments for non-listed pests and the implementation of control measures based on risk analyses. The paper also describes the procedural instructions that guide the PRA process, ensuring high-quality assessments and timely dissemination of results to relevant authorities. Overall, it serves as a comprehensive overview of the PRA process in Germany, highlighting its importance in maintaining plant health and preventing the introduction of new plant pests into the European Union.

Thrips, insects from the order Thysanoptera, are often intercepted in consignments sent from third countries into the European Union. Rapid species identification is needed in order to quickly decide, whether phytosanitary measures are required or a pest risk analysis (PRA) has to be performed. Two applications of Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) are presented here that allow visualizing subtle body structures of selected thrips: (i) fluorescent eyes and (ii) microtrichia. These innovative approaches support the reliable diagnosis of thrips species based on their specific pattern of eye fluorescence caused by different types of ommatidia (the units of a compound eye). A potential species-specific emission pattern provides a useful aid when screening samples prior to detailed morphological analysis. In the best case, the eye fluorescence pattern could be used as an additional diagnostic feature. Only size and number of pigmented ommatidia have yet been considered in existing identification keys. Since a sample is scanned with a laser beam in the CLS microscope, light scattering is minimal, which in turn means that small morphological structures such as microtrichia can be imaged much more accurately. Thus, both CLSM approaches could contribute significantly to facilitating the challenging morphological diagnosis of the tiny thrips.

Fusarium circinatum, the causative agent of pine pitch canker disease, is a pathogenic fungus that poses a significant threat to pine forests globally. It infects various Pinus species, causing resinous cankers, needle discoloration, and tree death. The disease severely impacts forest ecosystems, necessitating cost-effective and environmentally friendly management strategies. Contaminated pine seeds and seedlings are the main pathways for introducing this fungus to disease-free areas. To mitigate this disease and prevent its spread, it is crucial to implement new processes in forest plant production systems that align with the existing conditions of forest nurseries, ensuring effective and sustainable management. With this in mind, a national collaborative study involving 14 Portuguese partners was initiated to develop new prevention and mitigation strategies. In this work, four different treatments—MennoFlorades, Captan, ethanol, and hot water—were tested for their ability to eliminate F. circinatum from contaminated Pinus seeds in vitro. The most effective treatments were selected for further in vitro assays and real-context nursery germination trials to assess their impacts on seed germination, plant production, and certification. MennoFlorades, Captan, and hot water were tested in the nursery, with hot water showing the most promising results due to its negligible impact on seedlings, eco-friendly nature, ease of implementation, and cost-effectiveness. Simple Summary: Our study evaluates the global risk of Aeolesthes sarta establishment using mechanistic and correlational niche models. The pest, known to affect various hardwood trees, poses a threat to international trade due to its quarantine status. The CLIMEX model, based on species-specific physiological thresholds, and MaxEnt model, using species occurrences and climatic data, project its potential distribution. Both models align well with the current distribution, predicting broader ranges in the central and southern hemispheres, excluding extreme northern regions. Future climate changes may expand its range, particularly in Europe and North America, where its host species are present. Temperature and precipitation are key factors influencing its distribution. These models offer valuable insights for policymakers and trade negotiators to make science-based decisions on pest management and trade agreements, aiding in monitoring potential pest introductions globally. A precise evaluation of the risk of establishing insect pests is essential for national plant protection organizations. This accuracy is crucial in negotiating international trade agreements for forestry-related commodities, which have the potential to carry pests and lead to unintended introductions in the importing countries. In our study, we employed both mechanistic and correlative niche models to assess and map the global patterns of potential establishment for Aeolesthes sarta under current and future climates. This insect is a significant pest affecting tree species of the genus Populus, Salix, Acer, Malus, Juglans, and other hardwood trees. Notably, it is also categorized as a quarantine pest in countries where it is not currently present. The mechanistic model, CLIMEX, was calibrated using species-specific physiological tolerance thresholds, providing a detailed understanding of the environmental factors influencing the species. In contrast, the correlative model, maximum entropy (MaxEnt), utilized species occurrences and spatial climatic data, offering insights into the species' distribution based on observed data and environmental conditions. The projected potential distribution from CLIMEX and MaxEnt models aligns well with the currently known distribution of A. sarta. CLIMEX predicts a broader global distribution than MaxEnt, indicating that most central and southern hemispheres are suitable for its distribution, excluding the extreme northern hemisphere, central African countries, and the northern part of Australia. Both models accurately predict the known distribution of A. sarta in the Asian continent, and their projections suggest a slight overall increase in the global distribution range of A. sarta with future changes in climate temperature, majorly concentrating in the central and northern hemispheres. Furthermore, the models anticipate suitable conditions in Europe and North America, where A. sarta currently does not occur but where its preferred host species, Populus alba, is present. The main environmental variables associated with the distribution of A. sarta at a global level were the average annual temperature and precipitation rate. The predictive models developed in this study offer insights into the global risk of A. sarta establishment and can be valuable for monitoring potential pest introductions in different countries. In this work we report four new host plants of carambola fruit fly [Bactrocera carambolae Drew & Hancock, 1994 (Diptera: Tephritidae)] in Brazil from sampling carried out in four municipalities in the state of Amapá. We also report new host record for Anastrepha bahiensis Lima, 1937 and Anastrepha striata Schiner, 1868 (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Brazil.

In this work we report for the first time in Brazil the occurrence of carambola fruit fly Bactrocera carambolae Drew & Hancock, 1994 (Diptera: Tephritidae) in fruits of Carica papaya L., from samples collected in the municipalities of Almeirim, state of Pará, and Mazagão, state of Amapá. These findings are discussed in the context of Brazilian fruit growing.

The false codling moth, Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Meyrick), is a polyphagous pest indigenous to most of sub-Saharan Africa. This species is considered to be quarantined throughout much of the world, in part due to its extensive host range and significant damage caused by larval feeding. We developed a specific real-time PCR assay that allows for rapid and reliable identification of T. leucotreta. More than 150 target specimens were sequenced using an Illumina whole-genome shotgun approach to identify the most suitable loci for assay development. A hydrolysis probe that binds to a segment of the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) region was designed and used with a generic internal control targeting 18S rDNA. The assay was examined for cross-reactivity by testing additional Thaumatotibia species and representatives of related Olethreutine leafroller genera such as Cryptophlebia, Cydia, and Grapholita, which are often encountered in the same geographic region and on the same hosts as T. leucotreta. We compared our newly developed test to previously published TaqMan real-time PCR, SYBR Green real-time PCR, and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) tests. Our newly developed real-time PCR assay outperformed all three tests in terms of analytical specificity, with 100% accuracy. The citrus longhorned beetle Anoplophora chinensis (Forster, 1771) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), which is considered to be one of the most important pests in the world, is listed in the Plant Quarantine Regulation of Türkiye as a "quarantine pest whose presence in Türkiye is limited and which constitutes an obstacle to import". After this species was first detected in Istanbul in 2014, it was found in Antalya, Bartın, Diyarbakır, Sakarya and Trabzon. Anoplophora chinensis which was seen on many tree species, but it prefers generally Acer spp., Platanus orientalis and Corylus spp. in Türkiye. So far, the species has been observed in parks, nurseries and hazelnut production areas. Since it is a polyphagous species and its main host in its native distribution areas is citrus fruits, it is an important threat for ornamental plants and agricultural sectors. It may also pose a threat to broad-leaved species in forest areas in terms of biodiversity. In this study, the current situation of A. chinensis in Türkiye and in the world is discussed in detail.

Fruit flies belonging to the Bactrocera dorsalis species complex pose a significant threat to mangoes and other crops in the Philippines and worldwide. Identifying cryptic species within this complex is challenging, particularly when relying solely on morphological analysis. In this study, we sequenced two fragments of the nuclear 18S and ITS2-28S rRNA genes from specimens of Bactrocera dorsalis Hendel collected in the Philippines to assess their applicability for species diagnostics. Subsequent sequencing and analysis revealed that the 18S and 28S rRNA gene fragments matched B. dorsalis sequences in NCBI but also displayed high similarity with other Bactrocera and insect species. On the other hand, sequences of the ITS2 segment showed hits specific to B. dorsalis. Further analysis of the 18S rRNA gene in fruit flies collected from various sources and host plants in the country suggests conserved sequences among Bactrocera samples, irrespective of collection site and host plant species. In conclusion, our findings suggest that, among the tested nuclear DNA fragments, only the ITS2 demonstrates sufficient species-level nucleotide variation for effective use as a molecular diagnostic marker for B. dorsalis identification.

Relevance. Among the factors of increasing the productivity and quality of cultivated plants, the correct organization and timely implementation of the fight against harmful organisms is of great importance. At the same time, a special place is occupied by quarantine measures. No less important is the timely detection and destruction of quarantine organisms, their localization and elimination in isolated centers of infection.Methods. The methods for registration testing of pesticides in terms of biological effectiveness (VIZR) and of studying the bioecological features of the tomato leaf miner, adopted by the Scientific Council of the National Institute of Plant Protection and Technical Cultures of the Republic of Azerbaijan, was applied.Results. In the conditions of the South Caucasus in the Republic of Azerbaijan, the biology of the tomato leaf miner, the degree of development, the prevalence and the harmfulness of the insect pest have been studied in detail for the first time. The reasons for the rapid spread of the pest are indicated, the conditions are favorable to it. Listed agrotechnical measures that reduce the population of the pest and measures of biological and chemical control. Employees of the Institute of plant protection and technical crops and the Azerbaijan State Agrarian University have developed a set of measures for monitoring, prevention and pest control, thanks to which it is possible to control the number of pests.

Specimens of Bactrocera carambolae Drew & Hancock, 1994 (Diptera: Tephritidae) were obtained from fruits of Averrhoa bilimbi L., Averrhoa carambola L. (Oxalidaceae), Malpighia emarginata DC. (Malpighiaceae), and Psidium guajava L. (Myrtaceae), from a survey carried out in Lethem, Republic of Guyana. This is the first record of B. carambolae in A. bilimbi, M. emarginata and P. guajava in the country.

Cyst producing nematodes are persistent soil-borne organisms causing severe damage to cultivated plants. Persistence of the economically relevant cyst nematode species Globodera pallida, G. rostochiensis and Heterodera schachtii was investigated at different stages during a large-scale industrial composting process to evaluate its efficiency to prevent spread of these nematodes into natural and agricultural habitats. Using reference cyst nematodes incorporated into organic waste from households and the processing industry, the effect of anaerobic fermentation and aerobic composting processes were investigated. Treated cysts were analysed for viability and reproductive potential by performing hatching tests and bioassays on susceptible host plants. The investigated composting plant showed temperatures between 40 and 72 °C at aerobic composting conditions depending on the sample position (bottom, middle, top) within the pile. We found no viable juveniles or reproductive potential of Globodera spp. (Loof and Bakker 1992) and less than 5 per cent reproduction of H. schachtii. Additionally to temperature conditions, we presume that competition of the microbial community and their released biodigestants like fatty acids also play a major role in successful treatment of these severe pest organisms. The peach fruit fly, Bactrocera zonata (Saunders) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a pest of economic importance, endemic to South and South‐East Asia. It is highly invasive and due to its quarantine pest status, it interferes with horticultural trade. Males of many Bactrocera species are strongly attracted to methyl eugenol (ME) [1,2‐dimethoxy‐4‐(2‐propenyl) benzene], a phenylpropanoid compound naturally occurring in many plant species. Feeding on ME is also reported to enhance male mating success in several Bactrocera species. Such an effect can increase the effectiveness of the sterile insect technique (SIT). The current study was designed to identify the sexual maturity age of males of B. zonata, the relation between male age and attraction to ME, and the effect of ME on male mating success. The results showed that males initiated their mating at 8 days of age and attained the highest mating success at 16 days of age. The percentage of immature males responding to ME increased with age and the maximum response was observed during the age of sexual maturity. Methyl eugenol treatment at sexual maturity significantly enhanced male mating success over untreated males. The males treated with ME at a sexually immature age (5 days old) achieved significantly higher mating success after reaching sexual maturity. These findings suggested that B. zonata males can be treated with ME at the age of 5 days in sterile‐male 'holding and release' facilities and thereafter released in the field, where they are expected to achieve higher mating success after attaining sexual maturity. Quarantine plant pests are socially, economically and environmentally important due to their impact on food security, human health, global trade and crop production costs. The increase in global trade and tourism, frequent occurrence of natural disasters and climate changes have exacerbated the rate of entry, establishment and spread of plant pests regionally and globally. It has, therefore, become exigent to develop a list of pests of quarantine importance at the regional and national levels to prioritise and allocate the limited available resources to manage the associated risks. In the present study, the Technical Committee on the Formulation and Prioritisation of a Regional Priority Pest List for the Caribbean, in collaboration with the National Plant Protection Organisation of the Caribbean countries and the United States Department of Agriculture - Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS), developed and prioritised a quarantine pest list using a multi-criteria decision-making approach. The technical committee successfully evolved the process in 2014 and 2018 and developed a list of the top 10 pests of quarantine importance for the Caribbean Region, employing the Delphi Technique (DT) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) through the assignment of criteria that are relevant to the region. The Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata), frosty pod rot (Moniliophthora roreri) and the tomato leaf miner (Tuta absoluta), listed as top quarantine pest threats, were subsequently detected in the region. This exercise guided the authorities in advance to allocate resources and to develop response plans including capacity building for surveillance and detection of priority pests. This has demonstrated the significance and ap)propriateness of the multi-criteria decision approach to determine priority pest lists and prepare the region for development of better management practices. Pest insect surveillance using lures is widely used to support market access requirements for traded articles that are hosts or carriers of quarantine pests. Modeling has been used extensively to guide the design of surveillance to support pest free area claims but is less commonly applied to provide confidence in pest freedom or low pest prevalence within sites registered for trade. Site-based surveillance typically needs to detect pests that are already present in the site or that may be entering the site from surrounding areas. We assessed the ability of site-based surveillance strategies to detect pests originating from within or outside the registered site using a probabilistic trapping network simulation model with random-walk insect movement and biologically realistic parameters. For a given release size, time-dependent detection probability was primarily determined by trap density and lure attractiveness, whereas mean step size (daily dispersal) had limited effect. Results were robust to site shape and size. For pests already within the site, detection was most sensitive using regularly spaced traps. Perimeter traps performed best for detecting pests moving into the site, although the importance of trap arrangement decreased with time from release, and random trap placement performed relatively well compared to regularly spaced traps. High detection probabilities were achievable within 7 days using realistic values for lure attractiveness and trap density. These findings, together with the modeling approach, can guide the development of internationally agreed principles for designing site-based surveillance of lure-attractant pests that is calibrated against the risk of non-detection. The obscure mealybug Pseudococcus viburni (Signoret) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) is recorded for the first time from Colombia based on specimens collected on Opuntia cylindrica (Lam.) DC., Mammillaria sp. (Cactaceae), Escallonia paniculata (Ruiz & Pav.), Roem. & Schult. (Escalloniaceae), Ficus carica L. (Moraceae), Coffea arabica L. (Rubiaceae), Citrus sp. (Rutaceae), Cestrum nocturnum L. and Solanum betaceum Cavanilles (Solanaceae). Multiple methods were used to identify P. viburni because it belongs to the "Pseudococcus maritimus" complex, a group composed of more than 60 species with high variation in morphological characteristics. The specimens were identified based on the morphology and morphometric analysis of third‐instar nymphs and adult females. This morphological identification was corroborated by data on geographical distribution, plant hosts and a molecular identification using two different loci, CO1 (mtDNA) and the 28S ribosomal gene (nuclear genome). Simple Summary: North American bean thrips, Caliothrips fasciatus, native to California (U.S.), is a regular contaminant of navel oranges exported from California. Despite more than 100 years of accidental shipments overseas, this polyphagous thrips has not established outside of its native range. Understanding why this thrips has not successfully invaded other parts of the world may be explained, in part, by the effects of temperature on fitness. Degree day accumulation to complete development, estimated from linear regression, ranged 370.37–384.61. Average development times for eggs, first and second instar larvae, propupae, pupae, and adult longevity, and mean lifetime fecundity of females were significantly affected by temperature. The maximum entropy (MaxEnt) algorithm was used to predict the potential geographic distribution of the mango stone weevil (MSW), Sternochetus mangiferae, because of its quarantine importance. Projections were made based on the relation between MSW presence data as well as current and projected climate data for the study region. The MaxEnt simulation results give an accurate estimation of the species' range in terms of bias of appropriate and inappropriate regions for its incidence adaptability in the present and projected climatic scenarios. The ecological niche model gives an excellent fit for MSW distribution with a high value of area under the curve (AUC) of 0.900. The jackknife test showed that the most important bioclimatic variable in determining the distribution of MSW is the mean diurnal range. South Asia (India, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand), Australia, and Africa (Tanzania) were predicted to have high suitability areas for MSW distribution. In India, the model predicted higher pest suitability areas in Andhra Pradesh, Orissa's coastal regions, West Bengal's southern parts, and parts of Kerala and Karnataka. Projections of future climate scenarios reveal a relative increase in S. mangiferae distribution. The study identified high-suitability regions around the world, along with India, for the potential establishment of MSW. Xylella fastidiosa (Xf) is a Gram-negative plant bacterium that causes severe diseases affecting several economically important crops in many countries. To achieve early detection of the pathogen, a droplet digital PCR (ddPCR)-based approach was used to detect the bacterium at low concentrations in different plant species and insect vectors. In this study, we implemented the reaction conditions of a previously developed ddPCR assay, and we validated its use to detect Xf in insect vectors as well as in a broader list of host species. More specifically, the sensitivity and accuracy of the protocol were assessed by testing five plant matrices (Olea europaea, Nerium oleander, Vitis vinifera, Citrus sinensis, and Prunus dulcis), and for the first time, the insect vector (Philaenus spumarius), was either naturally infected or artificially spiked with bacterial suspension at known concentrations. The lowest concentrations detected by ddPCR were 5 ag/µL of bacterial DNA and 1.00 × 102 CFU/mL of bacterial cells. Both techniques showed a high degree of linearity, with R2 values ranging from 0.9905 to 0.9995 and from 0.9726 to 0.9977, respectively, for qPCR and ddPCR. Under our conditions, ddPCR showed greater analytical sensitivity than qPCR for O. europea, C. sinensis, and N. oleander. Overall, the results demonstrated that the validated ddPCR assay enables the absolute quantification of Xf target sequences with high accuracy compared with the qPCR assay, and can support experimental research programs and the official controls, particularly when doubtful or inconclusive results are recorded by qPCR. The invasive thrips Thrips parvispinus (Karny) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is an important insect pest causing severe damage in chilli-growing areas of south India in the last two years. In the present study, its spread in north and central India in chilli and capsicum is discussed along with diagnosis, occurrence, damage symptoms. A high level of infestation (ranging from 8-12 thrips/ flower) was observed on chilli crop in Madhya Pradesh (Khargone, Khandwa, Satna, Narasinghpur, Dhar) and on capsicum hybrids in Haryana (Ambala, Panchkula and Panipat) grown under greenhouse. Phytosanitary legislation involves government laws that are essential to minimize the risk of the introduction and diffusion of pests, especially invasive non-native species, as a consequence of the international exchange of plant material, thus allowing us to safeguard agricultural production and biodiversity of a territory. These measures ensure compliance with adequate requirements relating to the absence of pests, especially of harmful quarantine organisms through inspections and diagnosis tests of the consignments to ascertain the presence of the pests concerned. They also regulate the eradication and containment measures that are implemented in the eventuality of an unintentional introduction of these organisms. In the present contribution, the current plant protection legislation for the exchange of plants or propagation material within the European Union or for export to foreign countries, represented by Regulation (EU) 2016/2031, has been reviewed, with a particular focus on the olive tree (Olea europaea L.). Furthermore, a brief summary of the main olive tree pests transmissible with the propagation material is also reported, indicating their current categorization with respect to the relative quarantine status. A method is described that generates DNA extracts suitable for the detection of Clavibacter sepedonicus and Ralstonia solanacearum in potato samples, without the need for laborious, time‐consuming extraction protocols or expensive kits and laboratory equipment. Furthermore, a multiplex test is presented that allows the simultaneous detection of both pathogens in one standard PCR reaction. The methods described here allowed the detection of both bacteria in cell densities of 103 cells per mL of plant extract, thus fulfilling the demands of official testing schemes, e.g. in the European Union. High potato starch content did not affect analytical sensitivity, and high concentrations of one pathogen did not impede the detection of the other. This method might be useful for all laboratories worldwide carrying out medium‐ to large‐scale potato testing for bacteria, and also seems to be suitable for the detection of virus diseases relevant for seed potato certification. Avocados are generally poor hosts or nonhosts for tephritid fruit flies, which can influence the type of mitigation measures required by export protocols for trade. We conducted experiments to determine the susceptibility of the avocado, Persea americana, cv. 'Malama' to infestation by Oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera:Tephritidae), in Hawai'i using laboratory and field no-choice cage tests, together with field sampling. In no-choice cage tests, infestation rates increased with decreasing fruit firmness over time after harvest. Although risk of infestation was negatively correlated with fruit firmness, about 50% of mature hard fruit exposed immediately after harvest became infested. In field cage tests, mature hard fruit on the tree at the 25% purple color stage were not infested, whereas fruit at the 50, 75, and 100% purple color stages were infested at relatively low rates. Field sampling of fallen 'Malama' fruit over two seasons showed no natural infestation by B. dorsalis and trap captures in avocado orchards using McPhail traps containing protein bait lures averaged 0.13 ± 0.03 (mean ± SE) flies per trap per week, underscoring the low prevalence of fruit flies in avocado orchards and the poor host quality of this cultivar. A systems approach based on poor host status, low prevalence, and a limited harvest period (October to March) and distribution area (northern tier states) is proposed to export 'Malama' avocados from Hawai'i to the continental United States. The potato cyst nematode, Globodera rostochiensis, is a quarantine pest in Australia affecting a relatively small number of properties in three different production areas in the State of Victoria. The effects of susceptible (Trent, Sebago and Coliban) and H1‐resistant potato cultivars (Atlantic, Crop 13 and Nicola) on nematode populations were compared in two trials in a naturally infested field in the 2008/09 season (Trial 1) and in the 2009/10 season (Trial 2). The latter included a bare fallow treatment. The reproduction factor Pf/Pi (final compared with initial nematode population) was used to determine treatment effects. Initial population density was very high, averaging 111 and 119 eggs g−1 soil in Trial 1 and 2, respectively. The Pf/Pi of population density (eggs g−1 soil) was greater after growing susceptible cultivars (average 1.74 and 2.92 in Trials 1 and 2, respectively) than after growing resistant cultivars (average 0.72 and 0.61 in Trials 1 and 2, respectively), or after a bare fallow (1.09) in Trial 2. This correlated with higher Pf/Pi values of cysts 500 g−1 soil and eggs cyst−1 for susceptible cultivars than for resistant cultivars. Average Pf/Pi values greater than one in both trials are consistent with more cysts and an increased population density after growing susceptible cultivars. There was a trend of population decline, that is, Pf/Pi < 1, after growing resistant cultivars (average Pf/Pi values of eggs cyst−1 of 0.77 and 0.35 and of eggs g−1 soil of 0.72 and 0.61, for Trials 1 and 2, respectively). However, Trial 2 showed that these Pf/Pi values were not significantly less than those for the bare fallow (0.68 eggs cyst−1 and 1.09 eggs g−1 soil). The susceptible cultivars Trent and Sebago produced lower yields than the resistant cultivars in both trials. In contrast, the susceptible Coliban yielded as well as the resistant cultivars, suggesting a high level of tolerance of this cultivar to infestation by the nematode. The resistant cultivar Crop 13 produced 34% and 36% greater total yields in Trials 1 and 2, respectively, than the once popular, but susceptible cultivar Sebago. This is the first report of the effects of potato cultivars on a population of the potato cyst nematode in an Australian field. The use of H1‐resistant potato cultivars can feasibly reduce populations of G. rostochiensis Ro1 on infested land and reduce PCN risk on land regulated as "linked" with infested land. To monitor and control the Japanese orange fly Bactrocera tsuneonis (Miyake) (Diptera: Tephritidae), it is important to determine their dispersal ability. Therefore, to determine the genetic structure of this species, we developed microsatellite markers at 17 loci for B. tsuneonis. A total of 80 adult females and males randomly collected from abandoned orchards in the Oita and Yamaguchi Prefectures, in the western part of Japan, were used for polymorphism analysis using the microsatellite markers. The average number of alleles was 2.65 for the 17 loci, in which two loci did not show polymorphism. The expected heterozygosity ranged from 0 to 0.663, although the observed heterozygosity was relatively low between 0 and 0.105. The null allele frequencies varied among populations. Moreover, no polymorphism was found in the three larval populations collected in the Oita Prefecture. These results suggested a high degree of inbreeding for this species. Significant genetic differentiation between females and males of the same population was not observed, although it was observed between the Oita and Yamaguchi populations. A bottleneck effect was detected in Yamaguchi but not in Oita, and this is congruent with the history of an expanding distribution in this species. These markers could be used for population discrimination and to expand the geographic history of this species, potentially contributing to the pest management of B. tsuneonis. The international trade of plants and their products, such as fresh fruits, can facilitate the introduction and spread of foreign pests and diseases. We examined South Africa's import of stone fruits (Prunus spp.) as a pathway for introducing Monilinia fructicola (G. Wint.) Honey and document recommended phytosanitary measures to deal with the risk associated with its exportation into the country. Fresh fruits of Prunus spp. are imported from various countries. The current study provides a report on 10 years (2010-2020) importation of Prunus spp. from Spain to South Africa with associated cases of M. fructicola. We also detail the current management measures for imported stone fruits from Spain to South Africa. We report 18 M. fructicola detections that were found during the study period. The number of detections presents enough trends to determine the level of phytosanitary concerns regarding the importation of Prunus spp. fresh fruit from Spain, which cannot be neglected. M. fructicola is an economically important brown rot on many fruit hosts and potentially threatens agricultural and horticultural industries, the environment, and biodiversity in South Africa. The importation of Prunus spp. requires intensive management strategies for M. fructicola, as pathogens may pose a major phytosanitary concern because it could thrive and reproduce in various environmental conditions and on various host plants in South Africa. Therefore, if M. fructicola establishes in South Africa, its impacts will have consequences for different key socioeconomic sectors, including the agricultural industry. Simple Summary: This study was carried out with the aim of emphasizing the importance of checking the plant material that can be imported in the baggage of airline passengers. Travelers are often unaware of the regulations in place and of the risks connected with such importation. The risk of the introduction of harmful organisms correlated with this pathway is yet not well studied and its frequency is underestimated. The results of the research underline the need for continuous checks at entry points and the establishment of a specialized position for inspections. Among European countries, Italy is the most exposed to the risk of biological invasions, principally for its numerous entry points (ports and airports) and for climatic conditions favorable for the acclimatization of several invasive species. Here it was assessed that the greatest threats to our agro-ecosystems come mainly from the passenger baggage in which a variety of fruits and vegetables are carried. From 2016 to 2021, large quantities of plant products were found in the luggage of passengers travelling from outside the EU and seized at the BCPs (border control posts) in the Campania region. Inspections and the following laboratory analyses were conducted on the plant material to assess the presence of exotic pests. Inspections led to several non-native species being recorded, and among the intercepted organisms, some should be considered "alarming", such as Bactrocera dorsalis, Anastrepha obliqua, and Leucinodes africensis. Despite a well-organized border inspection system, travelers transporting infested material unknowingly contribute to increasing the risk of the introduction of exotic species. Given the current situation, it is necessary to impose stricter controls and greater attention, ensuring compliance with the requirements of the new phytosanitary regulations by the actors involved in the transport of plant material. Finally, it is essential to improve awareness through a phytosanitary campaign on plant health risks, especially for people wishing to transport fruits and vegetables in their luggage. The Hindustan citrus mite, Schizotetranychus hindustanicus (Acari: Tetranychidae), is an invasive pest in South America and constitutes a threat to Brazilian citriculture. This study aimed to determine the contribution of weather variables to the seasonal abundance of S. hindustanicus and the best sampling scheme (sampling variable and unit) for this mite. Populations of S. hindustanicus were monitored monthly in an orange orchard for 31 months in Roraima state, Brazil. Eggs, mobile stages, and the symptoms caused by S. hindustanicus were sampled in different combinations of canopy quadrants, vertical tree strata, and branch sections. The optimal sampling variable and sampling unit for S. hindustanicus scouting were determined according to fidelity and precision criteria. Rainfall and high air temperature were the main factors reducing S. hindustanicus populations. The most suitable variable for S. hindustanicus sampling was egg count. The optimal sampling unit was a leaf collected in the central section of branches located in the middle tree stratum. In addition, the sample should be taken from the southwest quadrant. The Spotted Lantern Fly (SLF), Lycorma delicatula (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae), is a sap feeding pest native to southeast Asia that has become a global biosecurity threat following invasions into South Korea, Japan, and the United States in the last two decades. Environmental niche modelling has demonstrated considerable potential for further range expansions, including into Australia and Europe. Further analysis on the potential seasonal life-history and survival of this pest in its invasive range can inform monitoring programs and is a next step in biosecurity preparedness. Here, we incorporated eco-physiological information on the development and survival of SLF life stages across temperature regimes. Using gridded climatic data, we then mapped the developmental sequence of SLF across ranges already occupied in China, South Korea, and the United States, as well as uninvaded ranges in Australia and Europe. The model was able to capture global observations of the seasonal appearance of SLF and highlight regional and seasonal vulnerabilities in regions at risk of invasion. Policy makers can use these results to make science-based biosecurity decisions and target preparedness activities through improved life-history predictions in its invasive range. BACKGROUND Phytosanitary irradiation is used to control insect pests of quarantine concern on exported fresh horticultural products. Generic irradiation doses of 150 and 400 Gy are approved for tephritid fruit flies and all other insects, respectively. Other invertebrates such as gastropods (snails and slugs) may be classified as quarantine pests and require a disinfestation treatment. Parmarion martensi Simroth (Stylommatophora: Ariophantidae) is a semi‐slug quarantine pest sometimes found on fresh sweet potatoes and other fruits and vegetables exported from Hawai'i to the continental USA. Also, P. martensi is a host of the parasitic nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis (Rhabditida: Angiostrongylidae), the causative agent of neuroangiostrongyliasis or rat lungworm disease in humans. We conducted a study to determine if phytosanitary irradiation could control P. martensi and thereby reduce the risk of transmitting A. cantonensis in the USA. RESULTS: Two‐, 12‐, and 21‐week‐old P. martensi were treated with X‐ray radiation at a dose of 150 or 400 Gy or left untreated as controls then held in the laboratory for up to 250 days. Survivorship and reproduction were recorded every 2–3 days and individual weights were measured biweekly. Irradiation at 150 and 400 Gy reduced growth and increased the mortality rate compared to untreated controls and prevented reproduction. CONCLUSION: Phytosanitary irradiation treatment at doses ≥150 Gy will prevent the establishment of viable populations of P. martensi. The literature on radiation tolerance in gastropods suggests that the internationally approved generic dose for tephritid fruit flies of 150 Gy may be effective against many slug and snail pest species. There are two symptoms of wilting in banana plants that have been widely known, namely fusarium wilt and bacterial wilt. The symptoms of banana wilt usually are attributed to pathogenic fungi. Wilting symptoms on the leaves are usually accompanied by leaf spot, leaf streak, leaf speckle and anthracnose. Recent quarantine pest reports have found the symptoms of banana wilt in Morotai Island, Indonesia. The pathogens attack many local cultivars of banana plants including Mas, Ambon, Kepok and Nangka. The study aimed to establish the morphological characters of the pathogens that cause banana wilt. Descriptive research began with the sampling of diseased symptomatic leaves, field data reports and identification of pathogenic morphological characters in the laboratory. The variable observed were the disease symptoms, color and shape of mycelia, conidia, kinds of the pathogens and their growth on agar medium. The results showed that there was no quarantine pest on the symptomatic banana samples. There were two non-quarantine pests that had been identified, i.e Fusarium oxysporum causing fusarium wilt and Cladosporium musae causing leaf speckle.

In the present contribution, the current plant protection legislation for the exchange of plants or propagation material within the European Union or for export to foreign countries, represented by Regulation (EU) 2016/2031, has been reviewed, with a particular focus on the olive tree (Olea europaea L.). Furthermore, a brief summary of the main olive tree pests transmissible with the propagation material is also reported, indicating their current categorization with respect to the relative quarantine status.

Melampsora medusae f. sp. tremuloidae is a quarantine organism for the EU. In North America, this fungus causes rust disease on Populus tremuloides. In Europe, Populus tremula, an aspen closely related to P. tremuloides, is widespread and plays an important ecological role. Introduction of M. medusae f. sp. tremuloidae into Europe could be a major risk if this forma specialis could evolve and become virulent on P. tremula. To date no PCR-based assay exists to specifically detect M. medusae f. sp. tremuloidae. In this study, a sensitive and specific real-time PCR assay has been developed based on the 28S rDNA. The assay proved to be reliable using many real-time PCR kits and platforms. It can be used to monitor the introduction and the spread of M. medusae f. sp. tremuloidae in the context of phytosanitary regulations.
