The effectiveness of the increase in passive ventilation was studied as remedial action for high concentrations of indoor radon gas activity. The rationale has been to apply the provisions of Directive 2013/59/EURATOM, partially implemented by a regional law of Puglia Region (Southern Italy). Residential buildings were selected based on characteristics common to those of commercial premises, which are the recipients of legislative obligations. The final goal of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of carrying out the same remediation activity for both types of buildings. From a previous survey in Puglia in 2013–2014, 18 houses were selected and passive ventilation strategy was applied in order to evaluate its effect on the radon activity concentration. A specially designed protocol defined frequency and time of windows operation. The average value of the annual measurement revealed a significant reduction of the internal radon activity concentration: mitigation ranged from 21 ± 5% to 58 ± 2% with an average value of 33 ± 3%. The results of the study showed that passive ventilation is an effective method of mitigation of the internal radon concentration if correctly designed according to the local characteristics of the buildings and habits of the occupants.

222Rn gas represents the major contributor to human health risk from environmental radiological exposure. In confined spaces radon can accumulate to relatively high levels so that mitigation actions are necessary. The Italian legislation on radiation protection has set a reference value for the activity concentration of radon at 300 Bq/m3. In this study, measurements of the annual radon concentration of 62 bank buildings spread throughout the Campania region (Southern Italy) were carried out. Using devices based on CR-39 solid-state nuclear track detectors, the 222Rn level was assessed in 136 confined spaces (127 at underground floors and 9 at ground floors) frequented by workers and/or the public. The survey parameters considered in the analysis of the results were: floor types, wall cladding materials, number of openings, door/window opening duration for air exchange. Radon levels were found to be between 17 and 680 Bq/m3, with an average value of 130 Bq/m3 and a standard deviation of 120 Bq/m3. About 7% of the results gave a radon activity concentration above 300 Bq/m3. The analysis showed that the floor level and air exchange have the most significant influence. This study highlighted the importance of the assessment of indoor radon levels for work environments in particular, to protect the workers and public from radon-induced health effects.

The requirements about radon measurements in schools and public buildings included in most of the national and international legislations are generally restricted to all the rooms located at the ground floor and basement, assuming the soil beneath the building as the main source of indoor radon. In order to verify such an assumption for small buildings having at maximum two floors, a preliminary study was performed in 50 schools located in 15 municipalities of the Republic of Srpska. Results of this study suggest that a protocol requiring measurements at the ground floor only may be considered adequate. Due to the high radon spatial variability for rooms at the ground floor, it is preferable to require measurements in a high number of rooms (preferably in all of them) in order to assess the compliance with the reference level established by the legislation.

One of the main contributions to indoor radon levels is given by the exhalation from building materials. For this reason we performed measurements of radon exhalation rate in materials commonly used in buildings of the eastern Sicily. The measurements were carried out by using solid state nuclear track detectors in diffusion chambers. We report the results obtained for samples of materials used both for building and for decorating dwellings. The obtained values have shown that building materials commonly used in the eastern Sicily have surface exhalation rates ranging between 1.9 and 43.1 mBq m−2h−1 showing higher values for volcanic materials.

Indoor radon concentrations were measured in dwellings of the Puglia region in Southern Italy using LR-115 passive detectors. The results show that the radon concentrations varied from 15 ± 2 to 2166 ± 133 Bq/m3 with a geometric mean of 114 Bq/m3 and a geometric standard deviation of 2.3. An analysis on the factors affecting radon concentration such as age of the dwellings, floors, and stories, was performed. The mean effective dose to inhabitants has been calculated and found to be 8.2 mSv/y. Finally, for estimation of cancer risks, the lifetime risk and lung cancer cases per years per million have been calculated.

Gli ultimi studi epidemiologici relativi al radon condotti in ambienti residenziali hanno evidenziato un rischio di contrarre il tumore polmonare superiore a quel che si credeva in passato; come conseguenza sono state emanate nuove direttive e raccomandazioni, tra cui la Direttiva 2013/59/Euratom del Consiglio del 5/12/2013, che l’Italia sarà obbligata a recepire entro 4 anni. La Direttiva contiene, per la prima volta, obblighi per i Paesi Membri dell'Unione Europea relativi alla protezione dal radon nelle abitazioni, nonché una più stringente protezione dal radon nei luoghi di lavoro. In questo scenario è chiara l’importanza di una maggior informazione sul radon rivolta sia ad esperti che a privati cittadini. Su queste premesse il Servizio Radon dell’Istituto di Radioprotezione ENEA ha realizzato questo opuscolo informativo che affronta i principali temi relativi al radon. Partendo dai concetti di base della radioattività e del radon, viene spiegato come il radon, una volta formato all’interno delle rocce, riesca a fuoriuscirne e ad entrare negli edifici; vengono descritte le principali azioni di rimedio che possono essere realizzate per abbassare la concentrazione di radon negli edifici, e affrontato l’importante problema del rischio legato al radon e dei suoi effetti sanitari; viene illustrata la situazione italiana ed europea per capire cosa si è fatto e cosa si sta facendo sul radon; particolare enfasi viene data alla normativa italiana; viene spiegato come deve essere effettuata la misurazione del radon sia nei luoghi di lavoro che nelle abitazioni, descrivendo in particolare cosa bisogna fare per adempiere alle richieste della normativa. L’opuscolo si conclude con la descrizione del Servizio che ENEA mette a disposizione sia di enti pubblici che di privati cittadini per effettuare la misurazione del radon in qualità, supportando l’utente in tutte le fasi (prima e dopo la misurazione).

One of the most important use of zircon is within the ceramic industry for the production of ceramic tiles and sanitary ware. In porous fired tiles and sanitary ware, ceramic has a two-piece body made up of a clay-based ceramic body covered with a glaze to provide waterproofing, durability and decoration. Zircon, in the form of sand and/or flour, is added to the glaze as opacifyer, as well as to provide a white colour (15-20%). In contrast to porous fired tiles, porcelain stoneware tiles have a one-piece ceramic body composed of clays, quartz, feldspars together with zircon (1-5 %). The surface of these tiles may be glazed or unglazed. All zircon materials contain uranium and thorium in the crystal lattice. These primordial radionuclides substituted zirconium into the zircon lattice during the crystallization of the molten rocks. Basically two radiation exposure pathways are associated with ceramic tiles and other building materials: external exposure due to gamma-decay of naturally-occurring radionuclides, and internal exposure through inhalation of radon. This study reports the natural radioactivity and the radon exhalation rates from zircon materials, such as zircon sands and zircon flours, and commercial porcelain stoneware tiles in Italy.

The Emilia-Romagna region collected Radon indoor measurements, as well as Radon contents in ground water. In the present paper, these data are reconsidered for setting up a Radon indoor risk mapping system, through an integrated elaboration. The regionalization analysis is complex because the data are neither synchronous nor isotopic. The stationarity of the variables depends on the working scale. The analysis shows that the Radon measurement in the ground water table and indoor and are not correlated. The approach of considering radon indoor concentration as a continuous regionalized variable is critically revised.

La scelta di Palazzo Donn’Anna per lo studio che qui viene presentato è dovuta alla sua particolare struttura che ritroviamo, anche se non nella stessa splendida cornice, in molti edifici napoletani che ospitano migliaia di persone potenzialmente esposte a livelli di radiazioni superiori alla media, a causa dell'elevata radioattività naturale caratteristica della Campania (1). Il complesso, oltre ad essere costruito interamente in tufo, sorge su di un massiccio blocco dello stesso materiale; la sua peculiarità è costituita da un vasto sistema di gallerie che lo attraversano alla base, che sono in contatto diretto con l’esterno e che potrebbero interrompere o deviare il flusso di radon verso l’interno dell’edificio. La misura delle concentrazioni di radon in vari locali del palazzo, che viene qui presentata, ha lo scopo, tra l'altro, di verificare la capacità di una tale struttura di funzionare come una intrinseca barriera protettiva. La seconda ma non meno importante motivazione di questa piccola indagine è l’osservazione dei livelli di radon esistenti in un tipo di costruzioni che, pur molto diffuso, oltre che nella città di Napoli, in molti centri storici italiani, è stato poco rappresentato nelle indagini svolte in precedenza (2,3), che avevano lo scopo di misurare i livelli medi regionali di radon e di conseguenza sono state effettuate su campioni rappresentativi dell' intera tipologia abitativa italiana e quindi mai orientati all studio di una particolare tipologia abitativa. La valenza di una tale indagine orientata sta nel fatto che a Napoli come in altre città questi edifici dalla storia illustre e dall'uso per secoli esclusivamente riservato a pochi privilegiati, ospitano ormai veri e propri condomini o uffici, quindi una frazione non trascurabili di popolazione per la quale è importante riuscire a quantificare il rischio di esposizione al radon ed ai suoi prodotti di decadimento. Questi primi rilevamenti all’interno di Palazzo Donn’Anna hanno infatti mostrato livelli di radon ben superiori alla media ed hanno anche indicato strade per la loro riduzione.
