- Abstract
This study aimed at developing and validating a scale for measuring EFL teachers' perceived strategies for reducing their learners' language learning anxiety (LLA). In this mixed-methods research, adopting an exploratory sequential design and convenient sampling, 200 EFL teachers from Kish and Safir language schools in Tehran were selected as participants. To develop the items for the scale, 30 EFL teachers, randomly selected from the initial 200 teachers, were interviewed on their perceptions of learners' sources of anxiety and the strategies they preferred to use to reduce their learners' LLA. The results of interview content analysis along with the extant theoretical standpoints and empirical literature were drawn upon to develop an 18-item questionnaire for measuring EFL teachers' preferred English LLA reducing strategies for learners. The results of Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) revealed a four-factor model including learning process-related, explicit teaching of anxiety reducing strategies (ARS), materials, and presentation of instruction. The results of Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) also indicated that this four-factor model has acceptable reliability and validity. On the basis of the results, the developed questionnaire enjoys acceptable psychometric characteristics and can be reliably used to quantify and measure EFL teachers' preferred use of strategies to reduce their learners' anxiety. AbstractThe indispensable relationship between Research and Statistics makes the teaching of both courses crucial in all postgraduate programmes. However, over the years, postgraduate students have displayed a high level of anxiety in studying Statistics. Therefore, exploiting the descriptive case study strategy knitted within the sequential explanatory design, a Statistics teacher was studied in one of Ghana’s outstanding universities and the reported pedagogical behaviours were profiled. Primary data were obtained from 99 postgraduate students (reading various postgraduate programmes on regular, sandwich and distance modes of education) on their level of anxiety in Statistics (using the Statistics Anxiety Rating Scale) and their experiences with their teacher’s pedagogical behaviours. Also, 12 of the postgraduate students were interviewed about the pedagogical behaviours of their teacher that reduced their anxiety in Statistics. To triangulate the primary data, secondary results on the teacher’s teaching practices were obtained from the Directorate of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance Unit of the university (originally gathered through a statistical academic support scale). Descriptive (mean and standard deviation) and inferential (one-way ANOVA and SEM) statistics were used to analyse the quantitative data and the qualitative data were analysed into themes. Consequently, the study found 17 teacher pedagogical behaviours under teacher characteristics (cognitive and affective factors) and pedagogical practices that reduced postgraduate students’ statistical anxiety and heightened positive attitudes towards the study of Statistics. Therefore, a recognition of these pedagogical behaviours and their open display during the teaching of Statistics will go a long way in reducing postgraduate students’ high statistical anxiety.

The issue of language learning anxiety has received considerable attention in the last decades due to interest in learner psychology. Foreign language anxiety has been investigated as situation-specific anxiety related to the language classroom. Lately, researchers focused on language anxiety from a skills perspective, mainly the productive ones, speaking and writing, exploring the debilitating effects of anxiety on language learners. This paper reports on a study on speaking anxiety that included a sample of sixteen EFL undergraduates who took part in focus group interviews. They were conducted to collect qualitative data that would shed light on speaking anxiety from students’ perspectives. Based on existing language anxiety research, a theoretical overview of some of the personal and procedural factors that are thought to contribute to foreign language speaking anxiety is provided. The findings revealed a significant impact of the teachers’ role (s) in alleviating much of the anxiety experienced by the subjects in EFL speaking. An essential aim of this paper was to suggest some possible pedagogical measures that would help learners, as well as teachers, overcome major difficulties caused by foreign language speaking anxiety in an EFL university setting with reference to the teaching and learning of the speaking skill in the EFL Algerian university context. Ways to deal with and minimise foreign language speaking anxiety could be more effective if they intersect with students’ concerns.

Pre-service teachers who have grown up with ICT all around them are considered to be digitally literate. In this case, they are supposed to be proficient in their use of ICT for learning and teaching. This article explores ICT as the factor that influences pre-service teachers’ anxiety. Additionally, it aims at determining the role of ICT in reducing the level of pre-service foreign language teachers’ anxiety during their teaching activities. Anxiety is considered to have a powerful impact on people’s everyday life and on learning and teaching process in particular. The research tools were close-ended questionnaires filled by the respondents. The first one was used to measure pre-service teachers’ anxiety scale in different everyday life situations. The second questionnaire was based on the authors’ socio-psychological experiment, aiming at revealing the influence of ICT on pre-service teachers’ anxiety during their teaching practicum. The study was carried out with 120 pre-service EFL teachers studying at Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University and Pavlo Tychyna Uman State Pedagogical University who completed their teaching practicum as part of their graduation requirement at the Departments of Foreign Languages. The data obtained from the questionnaires were grouped into two main categories: the general level of students’ anxiety and the anxiety connected with using ICT in teaching English. The latter was categorized into “Very positive”, “Positive” and “Negative” groups based on pre-service teachers’ experience gained during their teaching practicum. ICT use was found to be positively and significantly related to reducing teachers’ level of anxiety. The results of the research proved that the students who did the ICT-related course as a part of their curriculum felt more confident while conducting classes and their level of anxiety was reduced while using modern information technologies.

Background: Past research has shown farmer anxiety and stress have significantly affected many farmers and their families due not only to the impact on feelings of happiness and success, but also on output efficiency, accident rates, and health. The past approach to ameliorating anxiety has been through utilizing coping mechanisms such as sharing with significant others, venting, planning, self-blame, and positive thinking. A problem has also been farmers' reluctance to voice difficulties and seek help. Method: An alternative, more basic approach to anxiety amelioration is possible. This involves isolating the human characteristics that lead to anxiety, and subsequently modifying these to reduce anxiety and its associated impacts. Accordingly, the extensive literature on anxiety and stress was reviewed to facilitate developing an hypothesis outlining the important components explaining farmer anxiety. To assess the parameters of farmer anxiety, a random survey of New Zealand farmers was used to obtain their ratings on their anxiety. Regression models were used to quantify the relationships. Results: Specific farmer personal characteristics were shown to be highly related to anxiety. These included a farmer's personality, objective set, belief in their ability to control outcomes, as well as education and age. Conclusion: This analysis provides the information required to direct counseling efforts to modify the anxiety creating personal variables and, consequently, reduce anxiety and its impact on a longer term basis. Problematic anxiety in students impairs academic functioning. Teachers are often the first among school personnel to interact with these students, but they rarely receive training in evidence-based anxiety reduction strategies. This study assessed the feasibility of a brief teacher-administered school-home intervention (TAPES; Teacher Anxiety Program for Elementary Students) to reduce student anxiety symptoms. Eight elementary teachers completed a 1-day training and administered TAPES to 10 students with elevated symptoms of anxiety (M age: 8 years old; 50% female; 90% Caucasian). Feasibility of the intervention was assessed using several indicators, including training and intervention satisfaction as well as fidelity of implementation. Pre–post intervention student outcomes were collected from parents, students, and teachers. Results indicated that the majority of teachers were satisfied with the training and reported the intervention was feasible. Paired t-tests on pre–post outcome measures revealed significant reductions in student anxiety symptoms according to teachers and parents. Preliminary results suggest TAPES is feasible and helpful in reducing anxiety symptoms. Additional evaluation using a randomized controlled design is warranted.

Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of psychocorrection based on the methods of selfregulation in athletes.Materials and methods: the effectiveness was evaluated on 104 male athletes who had an optimal level of psychoemotional state of the body during a background examination by electroencephalography (EEG). The subjects were randomly assigned to three groups of psychocorrection: control, EEGtraining, and VRtherapy. Mathematical and statistical processing was carried out in Statistica 7.Results: the average values of the wave intensity index (WII) after psychological correction using the following methods: EEGtraining and VRtherapy showed positive EEG dynamics in athletes of the second group (EEGtraining) 65,6 % (21) and the third group (Vrtherapy) 73,8 % (31) of the subjects, respectively. Whereas in the control group, selfhealing was recorded in 9 (30 %) athletes without psychocorrection procedures. Conclusion: the quantitative criterion of WII is a universal informative indicator of the functional activity of the brain for evaluating the effectiveness of psychocorrection aimed at optimizing the psychoemotional state. Psychocorrection of athletes using EEGtraining and VRtherapy provides efficiency in 73.8 and 65.6 % of cases, which significantly softens prestart tension as a result of reducing anxiety and restoring the psychoemotional state of the body to an optimal level by involving the psychological reserve.

Although previous research has indicated that emotions have a substantial impact on teacher well-being, research is lacking concerning the relationships between teachers' emotions, coping strategies, and quitting intentions. This current five-month, two-wave longitudinal study investigated the relations between these variables in a sample of 1086 Canadian teachers (female: 81.3%; Mage = 42). Results from cross-lagged analyses revealed that teachers' trait emotions corresponded with coping strategies and that trait emotions and coping strategies both corresponded with intentions to quit the teaching profession. Mediational latent change analyses further showed that baseline levels of teachers' anxiety corresponded with greater emotion-focused disengagement coping that, in turn, led to stronger intentions to quit the teaching profession. Finally, decreases in teachers' anxiety over time additionally corresponded with decreases in disengagement coping. Limitations and practical implications concerning the importance of providing meaningful support to teachers for reducing anxiety, improving coping, and reducing quitting intentions are discussed.

Background Virtual reality (VR) is a computer technology that simulates the real world to allow users to communicate with a similar but artificial environment. VR technologies can be used in pregnancy to help mothers gain a better understanding of this significant yet stressful event. The aim of this study was to find and summarize VR applications to help pregnant women during their pregnancy and delivery. Methods PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched on November 11th, 2020 to access relevant studies. The following data were extracted from the collected studies: first author’s name, year of publication, country, type of study, sample size, study objective, VR components (hardware and software), data gathering method, and study outcomes. Through a descriptive summary and analysis, the results eventually presented. Results Nine studies were included in this study. Four studies (44.5%) had used VR technology to reduce the anxiety of pregnant women, four studies (44.5%) had applied VR for decreasing delivery pain, and one study (11%) used VR for exercise trainings. Five studies (56%) used VR headsets and three studies (33.5%) used VR glasses. Most studies showed that VR was a useful method to be used for different purposes in both pregnancy and delivery (n = 8, 89%). Conclusion The use of VR technology for pregnancy has been increasing in recent years. This technology has different applications in pregnancy, from reducing anxiety and pain to exercise training. However, more studies are required to reach a general common understanding about the efficacy of VR during pregnancy and delivery.

A felmérés során a megküzdési stratégiák felméréséhez a következő skálákat alkalmaztuk: Kognitív Érzelem Szabályozás Kérdőív (Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire – CERQ), Hobfoll-féle Megküzdési Stratégia Kérdőív (Strategic Approach to Coping Scale – SACS). A hyperthyreosisban szenvedő betegeknél a depresszió magasabb. A gyógyszeres kezelés után a depresszió és a szorongás szintje csökkent mindkét csoportban, a megküzdési stratégiák többnyire változatlanok maradtak. Következtetések: Pajzsmirigybetegeknél a kognitív viselkedésbeli pszichoterápiás beavatkozás a gyógyszeres kezelés kiegészítő alternatívája lehet a szorongás és a depresszió szintjének csökkentése és a diszfunkcionális megküzdési stratégiák módosítása szempontjából. Orv Hetil. 2021; 162(7): 262–268. Summary. Introduction: There is a high interest in the scientific literature in psychological factors that influence the course of thyroid disease. There are a few studies on the link between thyroid disease and coping strategies. Objective: In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the manifestation of depression, anxiety and coping strategies in people with thyroid disease and the impact of endocrinological medication on these psychologic items. Method: The patients were grouped into two groups, hyperthyroid (n = 10) and hypothyroid (n = 21), according to the diagnosis established by the attending physician, TSH and fT4 level. Patients with hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism were evaluated before and after endocrinological treatment with the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ), Strategic Approach to Coping Scale (SACS) for the evaluation of coping strategies, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) for assessing the level of depression, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Form Y (STAI-Y) for assessing anxiety. These two groups have been compared. Results: The psychological and laboratory results of the two groups were compared before and after drug treatment. Both patients with hyperthyroidism and with hypothyroidism had high levels of depression and anxiety. In hyperthyroidism, depression is more severe. Following treatment with Thyrozol and Euthyrox, the level of depression and anxiety decreases in patients with hyper- and hypothyroidism; the coping strategies remained almost unchanged. Conclusion: Cognitive-behavioral psychotherapeutic intervention could be supplementary to drug treatment in terms of reducing anxiety, depression, and modifying dysfunctional coping strategies for patients with thyroid diseases. Fear of orofacial interventions is a very common problem. Procedural sedation and/or analgesia (PSA) offers added value in reducing anxiety, pain and discomfort. At the Radboud University Medical Centre (Nijmegen, the Netherlands) PSA is conducted under the guidance of physician assistants, resulting in a high degree of patient satisfaction. In this study, the 115 surgeons' satisfaction with PSA procedures for outpatient orofacial surgical interventions was evaluated by means of questionnaires. The study's conclusion is that oral and maxillofacial surgeons are highly satisfied when PSA is administered to very anxious patients. The collaboration with the department of anaestesiology ensures that the outpatient interventions can be performed safely and efficiently by the oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Purpose While virtual reality (VR) has been shown to be an effective distractor in children across a range of procedures, no studies have looked at its use within paediatric orthopaedics. The purpose of this study was to look at the use of VR in reducing anxiety levels in children during cast removal. In addition, the study aimed to find ways to enhance the efficiency of future VR trials in paediatrics. Methods A non-blinded randomized control trial took place in children aged four to 18 years. Intraprocedural anxiety was measured using the Children's Emotional Manifestation Scale (CEMS), while pre- and post-procedural anxiety was measured using the Short State Anxiety Inventory Scale. Additional data was collected on trait anxiety, nausea levels, desire for future VR use and areas of improvement for future VR studies. Results A total of 90 subjects were included in the study (control n = 45, intervention n = 45) with a mean age of 10.25 years (sd 3.35). Post-procedural anxiety and intraprocedural anxiety were 18% (p = 0.03) and 24% (p = 0.01) lower in the VR group, respectively, with the CEMS facial component showing a 31% (p < 0.001) reduction in the VR group. In all, 99% (n = 89) of subjects experienced no nausea, with one patient experiencing mild nausea that may have been present prior to VR use. Finally, 90% (n = 81) of subjects said they would like to use VR again, 1% (n = 1) said ‘no’ and 9% (n = 8) said ‘maybe’. Conclusion VR appears to be an effective distraction technique in reducing anxiety levels in children during cast removal.

Extensive research has been published on the effects of music in reducing anxiety. Yet, for most of the existing works, a common methodology regarding musical genres and measurement techniques is missing, which limits considerably the comparison between them. In this study, we assess, for the first time, markedly different musical genres with both psychological and physiological measurements. Three previously studied musical samples from different genres—classical (Pachelbel’s Canon in D), Turkish (Hüseyin Makam), and electroacoustic (pure electronic)—were employed to influence “everyday anxiety” in 50 German participants (25 females, 25 males). Psychological (self-perception assessment) and physiological (heart rate measurement) indicators of anxiety, as most typical of prior work, were considered. Our study shows that listening to Pachelbel’s Canon increases the self-perception of calm, whereas listening to the electroacoustic sample decreases it; the Turkish sample is in between. No differences in heart rate are found for any of the musical genres. Our study also suggests that listeners’ self-perception might be biased by the statements used in the psychological evaluation (positive or negative), which are interpreted differently by the subjects depending on their current state.

Anxiety can be overcome by non-pharmacological anxiety management, for example by relaxation therapy, which is a therapy that is often used to overcome anxiety or negative emotions using various types of relaxation. The purpose of this literature review is to examine the results of the past 10 years of research related to the effect of relaxation therapy on reducing anxiety in post-sectio caesarean mothers. The method used in the preparation of a literature review is to search for several articles by searching through nursing journals, science direct, google scholar, Pubmed, and EBSCO. The results of 8 previous research articles showed that relaxation therapy was effective in reducing maternal anxiety levels. Although there are various types of relaxation techniques autogenic relaxation has a medium-high effect size and is recommended for dealing with anxiety compared to other relaxation techniques

Dialysis causes many psycho-social problems in patients with chronic renal failure and decreases their quality of life by increasing their anxiety. We aimed to determine the influence of artistic activities on quality of life and reducing or eliminating dialysis anxiety.Methods. Among 180 hemodialysis patients, 8 patients were randomly selected as a study group and 8 patients as a control group. We performed our theater rehearsals in 16 sessions, two hours per week. State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), STAII and Social Anxiety Scales (SAS) were employed in both groups before and after the play. Results. The means of the eighth-month SAS fear and avoidance measures of the study group were found to be significantly lower than the control group and significantly lower than the baseline. The mean difference of the initial eighth-month SAS fear and avoidance in the study group was statistically significantly higher than the control group.Initial and eighth month SAS fear and avoidance difference averages of the study group were found statistically significantly higher than the control group.Conclusions. We determined that the therapies to be done with art have an important place in relieving or reducing anxiety in hemodialysis patients. In addition, it was the opinion that our patients would make positive contributions to their quality of life. However, further studies are needed to demonstrate whether theater rehearsals reduce anxiety in hemodialysis patients.

Objective: Spiritual intelligence is manifested when a person spends his life in complete spirituality. Anxiety and test anxiety are among the most common psychological and emotional problems during student life that have a negative impact on students' mental health and academic performance. Therefore, this study was conducted to explain the role and relationship between spiritual intelligence and hidden anxiety and test anxiety. Methods: This analytical study was performed on 503 nursing and midwifery students of Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences, Ahvaz, Iran (2018) using the available sampling method. King spiritual intelligence scale, Sarason's test anxiety scale, and Spielberger Anxiety Questionnaire were used to collect data. To analyze the data, statistical methods of path analysis and correlation coefficients were used. Results: The overall effect of test anxiety variable on spiritual intelligence variable is 0.1632 and the overall effect of hidden anxiety variable on spiritual intelligence variable is -0.07. Spiritual intelligence has a significant relationship with test anxiety, so that with increasing mental intelligence, test anxiety is decreased. While in the case of significant relationship between spiritual intelligence and hidden anxiety, with increasing spiritual intelligence, hidden anxiety is also increased. There was no significant relationship between hidden anxiety and test anxiety. The two variables of hidden anxiety and test anxiety have a very weak effect on spiritual intelligence. The effect of hidden anxiety is not significant at all, and the effect of test anxiety is very weak, although being significant. Conclusion: High spiritual intelligence indicates lower test anxiety, while it is inversely related to hidden anxiety. As a result, high spiritual intelligence does not indicate less hidden anxiety in individuals. So it cannot be said for sure that spiritual intelligence plays an important role in reducing anxiety.

Abstract: The current study aims to measure the effectiveness of a counseling program in improving the motivation of academic achievement among low-achieving students of the Department of Special Education at Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University. It also attempts to identify the impact of this program in reducing the rates of the students’ future anxiety. The sample of the study consists of (32) purposefully sampled students from the Department of Special Education at Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University who represent the experimental group. The age range of the students is from 18 to 19 years. The quasi-experimental approach was selected for this study. In addition, the researchers developed the following measurement scales for testing the research variables: an achievement motivation scale, a measurement of future anxiety, and the counseling program. The study results show that an academic advising program was effective in increasing academic achievement and reducing anxiety over the future. The results of the study show the effectiveness of the program in improving the participants’ motivation toward academic achievement, which ultimately leads to the reduction of future anxiety among the participants. Moreover, the results reveal that there are statistically significant differences at the level of (0.01) between the mean scores of the experimental group in the pre and post measurements of the Motivation achievement scale - and its sub-dimensions - in favor of the post-measurement. Furthermore, it shows statistically significant differences at the level of (0.01) between the mean scores of the experimental group in the pre- and post-measurements of the future anxiety scale - and its sub-dimensions - in favor of the pre-measurement. The results also show no statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group in the two dimensions: the successive measures of achievement motivation and future anxiety measures, which indicates the continuing impact of the counseling program.

Introduction. International research works have revealed that Russian children and teenagers tend to have one of the highest anxiety levels in the world. Anxiety at school can be a risk factor causing certain diseases. Purpose. To assess the relation between anxiety at school and morbidity among boys attending 5-11 grades at secondary schools in the Perm region. Material and methods. We conducted our research in spring 2019 in two secondary schools in the Perm region (in Perm and Kungur). Anxiety at school was estimated with F. Taylor questionnaire modified by N.M. Peisakhov (there were 30 statements in it that characterized various anxiety parameters; children filled it themselves). Morbidity was assessed by analyzing children’s medical profiles kept at schools (0.26/u-2000 form) and clinical examinations performed by medical experts. To establish a relation between certain anxiety parameters and morbidity, we applied non-parametric Spearman’s correlation test. To assess the risks of diseases for children with different anxiety levels, we applied the odds ratio (OR). Results and discussion. We revealed the greatest number of relations between anxiety and endocrine diseases, nutritional disorders, and metabolic disorders. Children who were anxious about controlling their knowledge were nervous, stress-filled, and had no self-confidence, authentically more frequently suffered from overweight, obesity, and protein-energy deficiency as well. This relation can be mediated with emotion-induced nutrition behavior which is especially typical for teenagers. Children who were anxious about controlling their knowledge and had no self-confidence (assessed as per three parameters) ran higher risks of functional dyspepsia than those who didn’t have anxiety. The same relations were detected regarding disorders in the immune mechanism and nervous system diseases. These relations can be explained by looking into psychosomatic mechanisms of disease occurrence. Established relations between anxiety and diseases of the eyes, respiratory organs, and musculoskeletal system more likely indicate that children and teenagers with somatic pathologies run higher risks of anxiety at school. Conclusion. It is necessary to perform complex activities aimed at reducing anxiety at school among schoolchildren attending secondary schools; their activities should involve the participation of medical experts with a wide range of specialties as well as parents.

Clerkship students feel increased anxiety and lack of confidence when it comes to surgery. This study assessed whether participation in Surgical Exploration And Discovery (SEAD), a 2-week intensive surgical program that includes career information, simulation workshops, and operating room observerships, would help decrease anxiety, increase confidence, and foster interest in a surgical career. This study took place at The Ottawa Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.Thirty first year medical students were randomly selected for the SEAD program and 32 were only given the program's instruction manual during the duration of the program serving as the control. At baseline and after the completion of SEAD, both groups were given a survey containing the State Trait Anxiety Inventory that measures self-reported anxiety levels with an adjunct that gauges confidence and interest in a surgical career.Students who participated in the program showed significant improvements in self-perceived knowledge and confidence for each surgical skill: scrubbing (p-value0.001, p-value0.001), maintaining sterility (p-value0.001, p-value0.001), and surgical assisting (p-value0.001, p-value0.001). However, there was no difference in the average state anxiety with procedural skills (p-value = 0.190) between students who participated in SEAD and those who did not. Students who completed SEAD had a notable increase in their interest in pursuing a career in surgery compared with their pretest (p-value = 0.020) and compared with the control group (p-value = 0.600).The SEAD program may increase medical students' confidence and interest in pursuing a surgical career. These results encourage offering medical students with similar opportunities that provide exposure to surgery in preclerkship.

This study investigated the prevalence and determined forms of intimate partner abuse (IPA) common to undergraduates of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria. It also investigated the gender differentials (Gender Symmetry and Asymmetry) in the perpetration of IPA among undergraduates and assessed the therapeutic effectiveness of self-talk therapy in reducing anxiety associated with IPA. The study adopted a mixed-method research design incorporating both descriptive survey and pretest-posttest control group experimental research designs. The sample for the descriptive survey was 1,448 undergraduates using the Sample Determination Table (Bartlett, II, Kotrlik & Haggins, 2001), which represents 6.5% of the total of undergraduates in OAU. The sample for the experimental stage of the study consisted of 32 undergraduates victims of IPA induced anxiety. Questionnaire on Prevalence and Types of Intimate Partner Abuse (QPTIPA) was used to collect data for the first stage of the study while the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) was used to determine the levels of anxiety experienced by undergraduate victims of intimate partner abuse. Self-talk therapy was administered on the victims of IPA induced anxiety. The results showed that more females experienced intimate partner abuse of 74.76%, than male victims at 25.24%. The results also showed that “Stalking”, “Exploring partner's vulnerability/disability/status”, “Presenting false information with intent to exploit partner” were the first three in rank of the forms of IPA common among the undergraduates with RSI scores of 0.547, 0.529, and 0.527 respectively. The three least common forms were “beating”, “physically restraining Partner’s movement” and “forcing partner to have sex with someone else” with RSI scores of 0.475, 0.465, and 0.406 respectively. The study further revealed that Self-talk therapy has a significant effect (F (1, 64) = 63.360, p < 0.05) in reducing anxiety induced by IPA.Dr

Background: Interest in delivering psychological interventions within schools to facilitate early intervention is increasing. However, most reviews have focused on universal or preventative programmes rather than interventions designed to decrease existing symptoms of depression or anxiety. This paper aims to provide a meta-analytic review of randomised controlled trials of indicated psychological interventions for young people aged 10-19 with elevated symptoms of depression and/or anxiety. \ud Methods: Eight electronic databases were systematically searched from inception to April 2019 for eligible trials. Study quality was assessed using two scales designed to evaluate psychotherapy intervention trials. Random effects meta-analyses were conducted separately for trials that recruited participants based on symptoms of depression and based on symptoms of anxiety.\ud Results: Data from 45 trials were analysed. Most interventions studied used cognitive and behavioural strategies. Few studies met methodological quality criteria, but effect size was not associated with study quality. Indicated school-based interventions had a small effect on reducing depression symptoms (SMD = 0.34, 95% CI -0.48, -0.21) and a medium effect on reducing anxiety symptoms (SMD=-0.49, 95% CI -0.79, -0.19) immediately post-intervention. Subgroup analyses indicated that interventions delivered by internal school staff did not have significant effects on symptoms. Reductions in depression were maintained at short-term (≤6 months) but not medium (>6 months ≤12) or long-term (>12 month) follow up. Reductions in anxiety symptoms were not maintained at any follow up. \ud Conclusions: Indicated school-based interventions are effective at reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety in adolescents immediately post-intervention but there is little evidence that these reductions are maintained. Interventions delivered by school staff are not supported by the current evidence-base. Further high quality randomised controlled trials incorporating assessment of longer-term outcomes are needed to justify increased investment in school-based interventions for adolescent depression and anxiety.
