International audience; The CAMCATT-AI4GEO extensive field experiment took place in Toulouse, a city in the southwest of France, from 14th to 25th June 2021 (with complementary measurements performed on the 6 September 2021). Its main objective was the acquisition of a new reference dataset on an urban site to support the development and validation of data products from the future thermal infrared (TIR) satellite missions such as TRISHNA (CNES/ISRO), LSTM (ESA) and SBG (NASA). With their high spatial (between 30-60m) and temporal (2-3 days) resolutions, the future TIR satellite data will allow a better investigation of the urban climate at the neighbourhood scale. However, in order to validate the future products of these missions such as LST, air temperature, comfort index and Urban Heat Island (UHI), there is a need to accurately characterise the organisation of the city in terms of 3D geometry, spectral optical properties and both land surface temperature and emissivity (LST and LSE) at several scales. In this context, the CAMCATT-AI4GEO field campaign provides a set of airborne VISNIR-SWIR (Visible Near InfraRed - ShortWave InfraRed) hyperspectral imagery, multispectral thermal infrared (TIR) imagery and 3D LiDAR acquisitions, together with a variety of ground data collected, for some of them, simultaneously to the flight. The ground dataset includes surface reflectance measured spectrally with ASD spectroradiometers and in six spectral bands spreading from shortwave to thermal infrared and for two viewing angles with a SOC410-DHR handheld reflectometer. It is completed with LST and LSE retrieved from thermal infrared radiance acquired in six spectral bands with CIMEL radiometers. It also includes meteorological data coming from four radio soundings (one of which was taken during the flight), data routinely collected at the Blagnac airport reference station as well as air temperature and humidity acquired using instrumented cars following two different itineraries. In addition, a link is provided to access the data routinely collected by the network of weather stations set up by Toulouse Metropole in the city and its surroundings. This data paper describes this new reference urban dataset which can be useful for many applications such as calibration/validation of at-surface radiance, LST and LSE data products as well as higher level products such as air temperature or comfort index. It also provides valuable opportunities for other applications in urban climate studies, such as supporting the validation of microclimate models.; L'expérience de terrain extensive CAMCATT-AI4GEO s'est déroulée à Toulouse, une ville du sud-ouest de la France, du 14 au 25 juin 2021 (avec des mesures complémentaires réalisées le 6 septembre 2021). Son objectif principal était l'acquisition d'un nouveau jeu de données de référence sur un site urbain pour soutenir le développement et la validation des produits de données des futures missions satellitaires à infrarouge thermique (TIR) telles que TRISHNA (CNES/ISRO), LSTM (ESA) et SBG ( NASA). Avec leurs hautes résolutions spatiales (entre 30-60m) et temporelles (2-3 jours), les futures données satellitaires TIR permettront une meilleure investigation du climat urbain à l'échelle du quartier. Cependant, afin de valider les futurs produits de ces missions tels que LST, température de l'air, indice de confort et îlot de chaleur urbain (UHI), il est nécessaire de caractériser précisément l'organisation de la ville en termes de géométrie 3D, de propriétés optiques spectrales et à la fois la température et l'émissivité de la surface terrestre (LST et LSE) à plusieurs échelles. Dans ce contexte, la campagne de terrain CAMCATT-AI4GEO fournit un ensemble d'imagerie hyperspectrale aéroportée VISNIR-SWIR (Visible Near InfraRed - ShortWave InfraRed), d'imagerie infrarouge thermique multispectrale (TIR) et d'acquisitions LiDAR 3D, ainsi qu'une variété de données au sol collectées, pour certains d'entre eux, simultanément au vol. L'ensemble de données au sol comprend la réflectance de surface mesurée spectralement avec des spectroradiomètres ASD et dans six bandes spectrales s'étendant des ondes courtes à l'infrarouge thermique et pour deux angles de vision avec un réflectomètre portable SOC410-DHR. Il est complété par les LST et LSE récupérés à partir de la radiance infrarouge thermique acquise dans six bandes spectrales avec les radiomètres CIMEL. Il comprend également des données météorologiques provenant de quatre sondages radio (dont un réalisé pendant le vol), des données recueillies en routine à la station de référence de l'aéroport de Blagnac ainsi que la température et l'humidité de l'air acquises à l'aide de voitures instrumentées suivant deux itinéraires différents. De plus, un lien est fourni pour accéder aux données collectées en routine par le réseau de stations météo mis en place par Toulouse Métropole dans la ville et ses environs. Ce document de données décrit ce nouvel ensemble de données urbaines de référence qui peut être utile pour de nombreuses applications telles que l'étalonnage/validation de la radiance en surface, les produits de données LST et LSE ainsi que des produits de niveau supérieur tels que la température de l'air ou l'indice de confort. Il offre également de précieuses opportunités pour d'autres applications dans les études sur le climat urbain, telles que le soutien à la validation des modèles de microclimat.

International audience; The persistence of soil contamination after cessation of oil activities remains a major environmental issue in tropical regions. The assessment of the contamination is particularly difficult on vegetated sites, but promising advances in reflectance spectroscopy have recently emerged for this purpose. This study aimed to exploit vegetation reflectance for estimating low concentrations of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) in soils. A greenhouse experiment was carried out for 42 days on Cenchrus alopecuroides (L.) under realistic tropical conditions. The species was grown on oil-contaminated mud pit soils from industrial sites, with various concentrations of TPH. After 42 days, a significant decrease in plant growth and leaf chlorophyll and carotenoid contents was observed for plants exposed to 5–19 g kg−1 TPH in comparison to the controls (p 0.7). The same indices also succeeded in estimating the concentrations of TPH using random forest regression, at leaf and plant scales (RMSE = 1.46 and 1.63 g kg−1 and RPD = 5.09 and 4.44, respectively). Four out of the 33 indices contributed the most to the models (>75%). This study opens up encouraging perspectives for monitoring the cessation of oil activities in tropical regions. Further researches will focus on the application of our approach at larger scale, on airborne and satellite imagery.

International audience; The characterization of sands detailed in this paper has been performed in order to support the in-flight radiometric performance assessment of space-borne optical sensors over so-called Pseudo-Invariant Calibration Sites (PICS). Although the physical properties of PICS surface are fairly stable in time, the signal measured from space varies with the illumination and the viewing geometries. Thus there is a need to characterize the spectro-directional properties of PICS. This can be done, at a broad scale, thanks to multi-spectral multi-directional space-borne sensors such as the POLDER instrument (with old data). However, interpolating or extrapolating the spectro-directional reflectances measured from space to spectral bands of another sensor is not straightforward. The hyperspectral characterization of sand samples collected within or nearby PICS can contribute to a solution. In this context, a set of 31 sand samples was compiled. The BiConical Reflectance Factor (BCRF) was measured between 0.4 and 2.5 µm, over a quarter hemisphere when the amount of sand in the sample was large enough and for only a single fixed angular configuration for small samples. These optical measurements were complemented by grain size distribution measurements and mineralogical analysis and compiled together with previously published measurements in the so-called PICSAND database, freely available on line.; La caractérisation des sables détaillée dans cet article a été faite en soutien à l'estimation en vol des performances radiométriques des capteurs optiques spatiaux à partir des sites appelés PICS pour Pseudo-Invariant Calibration Sites. Bien que les propriétés physiques des PICS soient relativement stables dans le temps, le signal mesuré depuis l'espace varie en fonction des géométries d'illumination et d'observation. De ce fait, il est nécessaire de caractériser les propriétés spectro-directionnelles des PICS. Ceci peut être fait, à une grande échelle, à partir de capteurs spatiaux multi-spectraux et multi-directionnels tels que le capteur POLDER (avec des données anciennes). Cependant, l'interpolation ou l'extrapolation des réflectances spectro-directionnelles obtenues depuis l'espace aux bandes spectrales d'un autre capteur est délicate. La caractérisation hyperspectrale d'échantillons de sable issus de PICS ou de leur voisinage peut participer à une solution. Dans ce contexte, 31 échantillons de sable ont été collectés. Le Facteur de Reflectance BiConique (BCRF) a été mesuré entre 0,4 et 2,5 µm, pour une demi-hémisphère lorsque la quantité de sable était suffisante, et pour une seule géométrie pour les échantillons plus petits. Ces mesures optiques ont été complétées par des mesures de distribution en taille et par une analyse minéralogique, et mises dans une base de données appelée PICSAND avec d'autres mesures publiées dans la littérature. National audience; La spectroscopie visible et proche infrarouge couplée à l’imagerie hyperspectrale permet le traitement du signal de réflectance à l’échelle d’un couvert végétal et le développement de relations de calibration destinées à déduire la composition chimique de ce couvert comme l’azote foliaire. Un modèle mathématique de détermination de l’azote a été mis en place à l’échelle du couvert en se basant sur l’imagerie hyperspectrale. Toutefois les interactions possibles entre données de réflectance du couvert et les propriétés architecturales (taille et angle d’insertion des feuilles) interrogent sur la robustesse du modèle obtenu. Pour préciser l’impact de ces variations architecturales sur les propriétés spectrales du couvert, nous avons modélisé différentes maquettes de couverts de blé (modèle architecturé ADEL) à différents stades phénologiques avec un modèle de radiosité imbriqué (calcul de la quantité d’énergie d’une feuille reçue par ses voisines) nommé Caribu. Ces deux modèles sont disponibles sur la plate forme Open Alea.27 L’analyse en composantes principales a été utilisée pour représenter les données issues de Caribu. Les deux premiers axes de cette ACP (> 99 % de la variabilité expliquée) représentent respectivement l’exposition de la feuille et les réflexions multiples. Le modèle azote a été appliqué à ces données spectrales. Pour une maquette donnée, nous avons pu observer que les organes soumis à des expositions fortes et ne présentant pas de réflexions multiples avaient une teneur en azote foliaire conforme à l’attendu alors que les triangles situés dans la partie basse du couvert, très soumise à des réflexions multiples, avaient une teneur en azote foliaire sous-estimée ( 0.4 points). Ces résultats sont présentés dans différents contextes architecturaux ; leurs implications sont discutées dans le cadre du développement de la technologie hyperspectrale pour l’estimation de la teneur en azote foliaire de couverts de blé.

This paper reviews the currently available optical sensors, their limitations and opportunities for deployment at Eddy Covariance (EC) sites in Europe. This review is based on the results obtained from an online survey designed and disseminated by the Co-cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action ESO903—“Spectral Sampling Tools for Vegetation Biophysical Parameters and Flux Measurements in Europe” that provided a complete view on spectral sampling activities carried out within the different research teams in European countries. The results have highlighted that a wide variety of optical sensors are in use at flux sites across Europe, and responses further demonstrated that users were not always fully aware of the key issues underpinning repeatability and the reproducibility of their spectral measurements. The key findings of this survey point towards the need for greater awareness of the need for standardisation and development of a common protocol of optical sampling at the European EC sites., This work was supported by the EU COST Office in the framework of the Action ES0903. Le signal reçu par un système optique de télédétection observant des milieux urbains est particulièrement complexe, en raison des particularités de ces derniers : occultations, ombres, éclairements réfléchis par les façades ou encore effets directionnels des matériaux urbains. Ces phénomènes rendent difficile la détermination automatique des matériaux directement à partir des luminances mesurées en entrée du capteur. L’objectif de cette thèse est de développer une méthode de transfert radiatif inverse, ICARE, permettant de déterminer la réflectance spectrale des matériaux urbains à partir d'images aéroportées très hautes résolutions spatiale et spectrale dans le domaine réflectif (0,4 µm ‒ 2,5 µm) en prenant simultanément en compte le relief en trois dimensions de la scène, sa forte hétérogénéité spatiale ainsi que les effets atmosphériques mis en jeu. La première partie de cette étude a été consacrée à une étude phénoménologique du signal sur un profil de rue typique de façon à analyser en détail les différents contributeurs radiatifs d’une telle scène. Cette étude nous a permis de mettre à jour les difficultés de la modélisation inverse notamment dans les zones d’ombre où les effets d'environnement sont prépondérants. Dans un second temps, des solutions physiques sont proposées pour modéliser chacun des termes intervenant dans l'équation de transfert radiatif et une approche itérative est mise en place pour résoudre le problème inverse. Dans un troisième temps, l'étude aborde la validation numérique et expérimentale du modèle. La validation numérique a été effectuée sur une image simulée par le code de transfert radiatif direct Amartis sur différents types de reliefs urbains, afin de vérifier la robustesse du modèle. La validation expérimentale a été effectuée avec succès à partir des données et images acquises pendant la campagne Capitoul qui s'est déroulée à Toulouse en avril 2004. The signal measured on urban areas by optical remote sensing is particularly complex because of the very specific structures of these areas : shadows, multiple reflections on the walls, and the directional effects of urban materials. These effects disrupt the incoming radiance at the sensor level and make the automatic classification of urban materials directly from the airborne radiance measurements, difficult. This thesis focuses on the development of a new physical model, ICARE, able to solve the radiative transfer inversion problem in urban areas, in the reflective domain (0.4 µm — 2.5 µm), from high spatial and spectral resolution images, taking into account the 3D-relief, the spatial heterogeneity of the scene and the atmospheric effects. First, a phenomenological study was performed on a simple urban scene (street profile) to analyze the contribution of the different components involved in the radiative transfer. Thus, the main difficulties of the inverse problem have been evaluated, particularly in shadow areas where environmental effects are preponderant. Secondly, we modeled separately the irradiance and radiance components at ground and sensor levels, and developed an iterative approach to solve the inverse problem. The last part of the study deals with the numeric and experimental validation of the model. The numeric validation was performed on different urban profiles using images simulated with the direct radiative transfer code Amartis in order to validate the different assumptions made. ICARE was then successfully validated on real images acquired over Toulouse during the Capitoul trial which took place in April 2004.

Soil Vegetation Atmosphere Transfer (SVAT) models have been implemented to simulate energy and mass fluxes between soil, vegetation and atmosphere of various ecosystems. Usually, these models are simple, but they use realistic descriptions of radiative, turbulent and water transfers. These include description of stomatal control of transpiration and CO/sub 2/ fluxes. They can be used for assimilating remote sensing data and derive vegetation canopy evapotranspiration or photosynthesis. Various remote sensing data may provide useful information to drive SVAT models. Surface temperature may be used through inversion procedures to retrieve parameters related to stomatal conductance or root zone soil moisture. Parameters related to vegetation structure (LAI, vegetation height) may be retrieved from reflectance measurements in the solar domain, either through direct relationships with some vegetation index or by inverting radiative transfer formulation against spectral reflectance measurements. The microwave data contribution has not been studied very often in the case of vegetation canopies, but they were proposed for estimating surface soil moisture. In this paper, inversions of the ALiBi model were performed to retrieve canopy evapotranspiration from thermal infrared, spectral reflectances and microwave data on two water stressed soybean crops. In a previous study, thermal infrared data alone were used to invert the model on plant water status parameters, while other parameters, related to canopy structure and soil surface water status, were prescribed from in situ measurements. In the present study, spectral reflectance and radar measurements were used to retrieve canopy structure parameters (LAI and vegetation height) and surface soil moisture by inverting radiative transfer models.
