Lunar tidal deformation (LTD), characterized by the vertical (${{{\bm{h}}}_2}$) and horizontal (${{{\bm{l}}}_2}$) displacement Love numbers, is a key to deciphering the interior structure of the Moon. However, the small deformation amplitude of only up to 10 cm makes their measurements very challenging. In this article, we propose a novel method named Earth-based repeat-pass SAR interferometry (EBRP-InSAR) to measure the LTD and displacement Love numbers. We analyzed the potential and performance of EBRP-InSAR in detail based on the LTD model and existing planetary radar capabilities. The error budget and simulation results show that the relative measurement accuracy of LTD could be better than 2 mm. Furthermore, compared with lunar laser ranging (LLR) and lunar orbiter laser altimeter (LOLA), the two-pass EBRP-InSAR cannot only directly estimate ${{{\bm{h}}}_2}$ but also ${{{\bm{l}}}_2}$ with accuracies better than ${{\text{10}}^{ - 3}}$ and${{\text{10}}^{ - 4}}$, respectively, which is comparable to that of LLR and LOLA methods. In addition, through long-term time-series observations, it will be possible to assess the spatial inhomogeneity of LTD response to the forcing potential in the near side with time-series EBRP-InSAR. After spatial smoothing, a space variation as small as on the order of ${{\text{10}}^{ - 4}}$ and ${{\text{10}}^{ - 5}}$ in ${{{\bm{h}}}_2}$ and ${{{\bm{l}}}_2}$, respectively, can be distinguished on the lunar near side. As another measurement technology independent of LLR and LOLA, the EBRP-InSAR is expected to explain the difference between the observations from LLR and LOLA and the modeled lunar interior structure, and first estimate the lunar horizontal displacement Love number.

Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (Pol-InSAR) based forest height estimation for ecosystem monitoring and management has been developing rapidly in recent years. Spaceborne Pol-InSAR systems with long temporal baselines of several days always lead to severe temporal decorrelation, which can cause a forest height overestimation error. However, most forest height estimation studies have not considered the change in dielectric property as a factor that may cause temporal decorrelation with a long temporal baseline. Therefore, it is necessary to propose a new method that considers dielectric fluctuations and random motions of scattering elements to compensate for the temporal decorrelation effect. The lack of ground truth for forest canopy also needs a solution. Unsupervised methods could be a solution because they do not require the use of true values of tree heights as the ground truth to calculate their estimation accuracies. This paper aims to present an unsupervised forest height estimation method called Dielectric Fluctuation and Random Motion over Ground (DF-RMoG) to improve accuracy by considering the dielectric fluctuations and random motions. Its performance is investigated using Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS)-1 Pol-InSAR data acquired over a German forest site with temporal intervals of 46 and 92 days. Earth-based repeat-pass synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry (InSAR) is a powerful tool to obtain the high-precision lunar terrain and deformation information, due to the short revisit period as well as the all-weather, long-time, and large-coverage characteristics of radar lunar observation. In this article, the baseline formation mechanism is investigated. Theoretical analyses show that the interferometric baselines mainly come from the lunar libration; however, the lunar libration may also result in a significant change of baselines and further lead to serious geometric decorrelation. To address this problem and ensure the Earth-based repeat-pass InSAR of the Moon, the precise relative motion model between the radar and the lunar target, considering lunar libration, is established, and the subradar point (SRP) wagging phenomenon is analyzed. Then, to evaluate the effects of SRP wagging on InSAR coherence, a geometric decorrelation model based on azimuth angle and incident angle is proposed. Based on that, the spatial–temporal baseline for Earth-based repeat-pass InSAR of the Moon is analyzed based on numerical simulation. Results show that the temporal baseline has obvious periodicity with a cycle of about 27 days. When the temporal baseline is an integral multiple of 27, the spatial baseline usually has the minimum value and the geometric decorrelation effect is relatively slight. Moreover, using the geometric decorrelation criteria, we examine the effects of radar frequency, position, and target location on the quantity of viable interferometric pairs, which has guiding significance for the selection of radar system parameters, radar position, and lunar target area. This paper describes a deep-learning-based unsupervised forest height estimation method based on the synergy of the high-resolution L-band repeat-pass Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (PolInSAR) and low-resolution large-footprint full-waveform Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. Unlike traditional PolInSAR-based methods, the proposed method reformulates the forest height inversion as a pan-sharpening process between the low-resolution LiDAR height and the high-resolution PolSAR and PolInSAR features. A tailored Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) called PolGAN with one generator and dual (coherence and spatial) discriminators is proposed to this end, where a progressive pan-sharpening strategy underpins the generator to overcome the significant difference between spatial resolutions of LiDAR and SAR-related inputs. Forest height estimates with high spatial resolution and vertical accuracy are generated through a continuous generative and adversarial process. UAVSAR PolInSAR and LVIS LiDAR data collected over tropical and boreal forest sites are used for experiments. Ablation study is conducted over the boreal site evidencing the superiority of the progressive generator with dual discriminators employed in PolGAN (RMSE: 1.21 m) in comparison with the standard generator with dual discriminators (RMSE: 2.43 m) and the progressive generator with a single coherence (RMSE: 2.74 m) or spatial discriminator (RMSE: 5.87 m). Besides that, by reducing the dependency on theoretical models and utilizing the shape, texture, and spatial information embedded in the high-spatial-resolution features, the PolGAN method achieves an RMSE of 2.37 m over the tropical forest site, which is much more accurate than the traditional PolInSAR-based Kapok method (RMSE: 8.02 m). This paper describes an automatic mosaicking algorithm for creating large-scale mosaic maps of forest height. In contrast to existing mosaicking approaches through using SAR backscatter power and/or InSAR phase, this paper utilizes the forest height estimates that are inverted from spaceborne repeat-pass cross-pol InSAR correlation magnitude. By using repeat-pass InSAR correlation measurements that are dominated by temporal decorrelation, it has been shown that a simplified inversion approach can be utilized to create a height-sensitive measure over the whole interferometric scene, where two scene-wide fitting parameters are able to characterize the mean behavior of the random motion and dielectric changes of the volume scatterers within the scene. In order to combine these single-scene results into a mosaic, a matrix formulation is used with nonlinear least squares and observations in adjacent-scene overlap areas to create a self-consistent estimate of forest height over the larger region. This automated mosaicking method has the benefit of suppressing the global fitting error and, thus, mitigating the “wallpapering” problem in the manual mosaicking process. The algorithm is validated over the U.S. state of Maine by using InSAR correlation magnitude data from ALOS/PALSAR and comparing the inverted forest height with Laser Vegetation Imaging Sensor (LVIS) height and National Biomass and Carbon Dataset (NBCD) basal area weighted (BAW) height. This paper serves as a companion work to previously demonstrated results, the combination of which is meant to be an observational prototype for NASA’s DESDynI-R (now called NISAR) and JAXA’s ALOS-2 satellite missions.

Generating accurate repeat-pass interferometric airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) products demands the precise compensation of the 3-D motion of the aircraft. This requires to estimate and correct small residual motion errors (RMEs) within the accuracy limits of the sensor navigation subsystem, e.g., using residual motion compensation (MoCo) algorithms. Because of their data-driven nature, the performance of these algorithms severely degrades for heavily decorrelated interferograms. This letter proposes a generic RME estimation and compensation strategy optimally estimating RME in a stack of SAR acquisitions, where some interferometric pairs are strongly affected by decorrelation. The algorithm works even if the whole scene decorrelates, as long as the coherence magnitude is reasonably high over short temporal and spatial baselines. The approach entails correcting the navigation data of each slave image of a one-to-many interferometric network with a cumulative correction. The summation is over the results of a precursory application of a general data-driven residual MoCo algorithm (e.g., multisquint) to interferometric pairs for which the impact of interferometric decorrelation is marginal (i.e., small temporal and/or spatial baselines). Compared to other RME correction strategies, the main appeal of the proposed approach lies in the simplicity of its implementation. This paper describes a novel, simple and efficient approach to estimate forest height over a wide region utilizing spaceborne repeat-pass InSAR correlation magnitude data at L-band. We start from a semi-empirical modification of the RVoG model that characterizes repeat-pass InSAR correlation with large temporal baselines (e.g., 46 days for ALOS) by taking account of the temporal change effect of dielectric fluctuation and random motion of scatterers. By assuming (1) the temporal change parameters and forest backscatter profile/extinction coefficient follow some mean behavior across each inteferogram; (2) there is minimal ground scattering contribution for HV-polarization; and (3) the vertical wavenumber is small, a simplified inversion approach is developed to link the observed HV-polarized InSAR correlation magnitude to forest height and validated using ALOS/PALSAR repeat-pass observations against LVIS lidar heights over the Howland Research Forest in central Maine, US (with RMSE < 4 m at a resolution of 32 hectares). The model parameters derived from this supervised regression are used as the basis for propagating the estimates of forest height to available interferometric pairs for the entire state of Maine, thus creating a state-mosaic map of forest height. The present approach described here serves as an alternative and complementary tool for other PolInSAR inversion techniques when full-polarization data may not be available. Due to its agility, flexibility and accuracy, airborne repeat-pass Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) is capable of overcoming the disadvantages of long revisit time and low resolution in space-borne SAR interferometry, and play an irreplaceable role in monitoring the deformation of landslides, volcanoes, earthquakes, etc. In this paper, the history and status in the world wide about the technology of airborne repeat-pass SAR interferometry are reviewed detailedly. Then after the accuracy of this technology is analyzed, its key problems in practice are presented, and the related researches in this field are also introduced comprehensively. The development trend and the prospect of this technology are also described in this paper. Finally, it is pointed that several problems still need to be studied further for accurate parameter inversion.

When applying to the airborne repeat-pass Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), which has long synthetic aperture and large azimuth-dependent errors, the surface assumption used to simply the time-domain algorithm model and the residual motion errors due to the precision of the navigation system will affect the imaging result and the interferometric measurement. This paper analyzes the altitude errors introduced by the surface assumption and the residual motion errors due to the precision of the navigation system. We deduce the range errors model during the single pass and analyze the effects of these errors on the plane location, interferometric phase and DEM precision. Then the accuracy of the theoretical deduction is verified by simulation and real data. The research provides theoretical bases for the system design and signal processing of airborne repeat-pass InSAR.

We present an empirical assessment of the impact of temporal decorrelation on interferometric coherence measured over a forested landscape. A series of repeat-pass interferometric radar images with a zero spatial baseline were collected with UAVSAR (Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar), a fully polarimetric airborne L-band radar system. The dataset provided temporal separations of 45 minutes, 2, 7 and 9 days. Coincident airborne lidar and weather data were collected. We theoretically demonstrate that UAVSAR measurement accuracy enables accurate quantification of temporal decorrelation. Data analysis revealed precipitation events to be the main driver of temporal decorrelation over the acquisition period. The experiment also shows temporal decorrelation increases with canopy height, and this pattern was found consistent across forest types and polarization.

Higher spatial resolution imaging data is always desirable to the international community of planetary scientists interested in improving understanding of surface formation processes. We have previously developed a novel Super-resolution restoration (SRR) technique (Tao & Muller, 2016) using Gotcha sub-pixel matching, orthorectification, and segmented 4th order PDE-TV, called GPT SRR, which is able to restore 5cm-12.5cm near rover scale images (equivalent to Navcam projected FoV at a range of ≥5m) from multiple 25cm resolution NASA MRO HiRISE images. The SRR technique has been successfully applied to the rover traverses for the MER and MSL missions within the EU FP-7 PRoViDE project. These SRR results have revealed new surface information including the imaging of individual rocks (diameter ≥ 25cm) by comparison of the original HiRISE image and rover Navcam orthorectified image mosaics. In this work, we seek evidence from processing a very large number of stereo reconstruction results from all Navcam stereo images within PRoViDE, registration and comparison with the corresponding SRR image, in order to derive a quantitative assessment on key features including rocks (diameter < 150cm) and rover track wheel spacing. We summarise statistics from SRR-Navcam measurements and demonstrate that our unique SRR datasets will greatly support the geological and morphological analysis and monitoring of Martian surface and can also be applied to landing site selection, in order to avoid unsuitable terrain, for any future lander/rover as well as help to define future rover paths. Higher resolution imaging data of planetary surfaces is considered desirable by the international community of planetary scientists interested in improving understanding of surface formation processes. However, given various physical constraints from the imaging instruments through to limited bandwidth of transmission one needs to trade-off spatial resolution against bandwidth. Even given optical communications, future imaging systems are unlikely to be able to resolve features smaller than 25 cm on most planetary bodies, such as Mars. In this paper, we propose a novel super-resolution restoration technique, called Gotcha-PDE-TV (GPT), taking advantage of the non-redundant sub-pixel information contained in multiple raw orbital images in order to restore higher resolution imagery. We demonstrate optimality of this technique in planetary image super-resolution restoration with example processing of 8 repeat-pass 25 cm HiRISE images covering the MER-A Spirit rover traverse in Gusev crater to resolve a 5 cm resolution of the area. We assess the “true” resolution of the 5 cm super-resolution restored images using contemporaneous rover Navcam imagery on the surface and an inter-comparison of landmarks in the two sets of imagery. The overestimation of volume scattering power and the scattering mechanism ambiguity are still present in model-based decompositions even with the implementation of the deorientation processing. These effects are demonstrated and investigated. One possible reason is because of the limited dynamic range of the models themselves that are not fully satisfied for the mixed scene cases. An empirical volume scattering model is proposed, using the repeat-pass polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry (PolInSAR) coherence, to extend the model dynamic range to be more adaptive. PolInSAR coherence is sensitive to different types of forests and terrains. The proposed model inherits these characteristics. In addition, it considers the cross-polarization power induced by oriented man-made structures. Thereby, a model-based polarimetric decomposition scheme is developed. The efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrated using E-SAR airborne and ALOS/PALSAR spaceborne repeat-pass PolInSAR datasets. Comparative experiments are carried out and show that the proposed decomposition overcomes the scattering mechanism ambiguity between forests and oriented built-up areas, since it successfully identifies the oriented buildings as double- or odd-bounce man-made structures while keeping the volume scattering dominant for the forests. Besides, the stable decomposition performance over the oriented built-up patches with quite different orientation angles also validates the improvement of the proposed decomposition. The processing of airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data requires a precise compensation of the deviations of the platform movement from a straight line. This is usually carried out by recording the trajectory with a high-precision navigation system and correcting them during SAR focusing. However, due to the lack of accuracy in current navigation systems, residual motion errors persist in the images. Such residual motion errors are mainly noticeable in repeat-pass systems, where they are causing time-varying baseline errors, visible as artefacts in the derived phase maps. In this letter, a refined method for the estimation of time-varying baseline errors is presented. An improved multisquint processing approach is used for obtaining robust estimates of higher order baseline errors over the entire scene, even if parts of the scene are heavily decorrelated. In a subsequent step, the proposed method incorporates an external digital elevation model for detection of linear and constant components of the baseline error along azimuth.
