Cold Slumping Glass Optics is a cost-effective technique to realize segmented X-ray optics. It is based on the replica approach: very thin flat glass foils are shaped to theoretical form by means of integration molds and fixed into stacks by means of ribs. As the theoretical shape of each of the layer depends on the radius of curvature inside the assembly, in principle different integration molds are needed to realize a stack. A worthwhile solution would be the usage of a single adjustable mold with and ‘optical surface’ to be shaped according to the position of the plate in the stack. The selection of the optical surface material and the bending strategy are the most relevant points. Glass would give major benefits in terms of thermal coupling with the glass foils, scratch resistance during operations and costs. On the other hand, given the reduced bending capability of the material coupled with its intrinsic fragility, experimental tests are necessary to assess the feasibility of the solution. In this paper we present the design and the implementation study as realized by the PoliMI-DAER. An experimental test campaign has been carried out beside the theoretical studies, to validate numerical models and obtain feedbacks from an early implementation. The test campaign is expounded along with the analysis of the results. A preliminary comparison with the numerical simulations is given.

This thesis presents a novel active mirror technology based on carbon fiber composites and replication manufacturing processes. Multiple additional layers are implemented into the structure in order to provide the reflective layer, actuation capabilities and electrode routing. The mirror is thin, lightweight, and has large actuation capabilities. These features, along with the associated manufacturing processes, represent a significant change in design compared to traditional optics. Structural redundancy in the form of added material or support structures is replaced by thin, unsupported lightweight substrates with large actuation capabilities. Several studies motivated by the desire to improve as-manufactured figure quality are performed. Firstly, imperfections in thin CFRP laminates and their effect on post-cure shape errors are studied. Numerical models are developed and compared to experimental measurements on flat laminates. Techniques to mitigate figure errors for thicker laminates are also identified. A method of properly integrating the reflective facesheet onto the front surface of the CFRP substrate is also presented. Finally, the effect of bonding multiple initially flat active plates to the backside of a curved CFRP substrate is studied. Figure deformations along with local surface defects are predicted and characterized experimentally. By understanding the mechanics behind these processes, significant improvements to the overall figure quality have been made. Studies related to the actuation response of the mirror are also performed. The active properties of two materials are characterized and compared. Optimal active layer thicknesses for thin surface-parallel schemes are determined. Finite element simulations are used to make predictions on shape correction capabilities, demonstrating high correctabiliity and stroke over low-order modes. The effect of actuator saturation is studied and shown to significantly degrade shape correction performance. The initial figure as well as actuation capabilities of a fully-integrated active mirror prototype are characterized experimentally using a Projected Hartmann test. A description of the test apparatus is presented along with two verification measurements. The apparatus is shown to accurately capture both high-amplitude low spatial-frequency figure errors as well as those at lower amplitudes but higher spatial frequencies. A closed-loop figure correction is performed, reducing figure errors by 94%.

This paper describes the development of a low-cost technology platform for fluorescence-based optochemical sensors. These sensors were constructed by incorporating fluorescent sensing elements in the core of multimode waveguides or lightguides, and have applications in medical, biochemical and environmental diagnostics. Flexible lightguides were fabricated either with silsesquioxane-based or PDMS-type optical polymers using photolithography or soft-lithography based replication techniques respectively. Spectral transmission characteristics were measured along with loss values obtained by cut-back measurements for several wavelengths from visible to mid-IR. Propagation losses as low as 0.14dB/cm were measured for 50 x 50 μm2 waveguides. For coupling light in and out of the waveguides, different types of coupling structures, e.g. 45° micromirror plugs were investigated. © 2012 Copyright Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).

Mass spectrometry-based proteomics techniques have been very successful for the identification and study of protein-protein interactions. Typically, immunopurification of protein complexes is conducted, followed by protein separation by gel electrophoresis and in-gel protein digestion, and finally, mass spectrometry is performed to identify the interacting partners. However, the manual processing of the samples is time-consuming and error-prone. Here, we developed a polymer-based microfluidic proteomic reactor aimed at the parallel analysis of minute amounts of protein samples obtained from immunoprecipitation. The design of the proteomic reactor allows for the simultaneous processing of multiple samples on the same devices. Each proteomic reactor on the device consists of SCX beads packed and restricted into a 1 cm microchannel by two integrated pillar frits. The device is fabricated using a combination of low-cost hard cyclic olefin copolymer thermoplastic and elastomeric thermoplastic materials (styrene/(ethylene/butylenes)/styrene) using rapid hot-embossing replication techniques with a polymer-based stamp. Three immunopurified protein samples are simultaneously captured, reduced, alkylated, and digested on the device within 2-3 h instead of the days required for the conventional protein-protein interaction studies. The limit of detection of the microfluidic proteomic reactor was shown to be lower than 2 ng of protein. Furthermore, the application of the microfluidic proteomic reactor was demonstrated for the simultaneous processing of the interactome of the histone variant Htz1 in wild-type yeast and in a swr1Δ yeast strain compared to an untagged control using a novel three-channel microfluidic proteomic reactor. © 2011 American Chemical Society.

This paper presents two main contributions: semi-passive replication and Lazy Consensus. The former is a replication technique with parsimonious processing. It is based on the latter; a variant of Consensus allowing the lazy evaluation of proposed values. Semi-passive replication is a replication technique with parsimonious processing. This means that, in the normal case, each request is processed by only one single process. The most significant aspect of semi-passive replication is that it requires a weaker system model than existing techniques of the same family. For semi-passive replication, we give an algorithm based on the Lazy Consensus. Lazy Consensus is a variant of the Consensus problem that allows the lazy evaluation of proposed values, hence the name. The main difference with Consensus is the introduction of an additional property of laziness. This property requires that proposed values are computed only when they are actually needed. We present an algorithm based on Chandra and Toueg's Consensus algorithm for asynchronous distributed systems with a diamond, <>S failure detector.
