The present article investigates the incapacitating bodily experiences of an unconsented African American research subject Lena Johnson in a Lakewood healthcare project by closely reading Megan Giddings' novel Lakewood (2020). By Portraying the impact of various medical experiments that incarnate pernicious effects on Lena's body, the deft fiction reminds the readers how the healthcare institutions in the US have been replete with the stereotypical racial beliefs. Afro-American literature while addressing the irrefutable presence of racial culture in the American society, has further emerged to portray the complex narrative experiences of black women in healthcare institutions. In this context, by drawing the theoretical postulates of Elizabeth Grosz and other theoreticians of varying importance, the article seeks to incorporate facets of corporeal feminism (ethical, ontological, and metaphorical dimensions) as its conceptual framework to examine the bodily intricacies and experiential agonies of Afro-American women in healthcare institutions. This study aimed to determine the used of Frozen Theme Strategic Intervention Material in improving the uniformly accelerated motion (UAM) proficiency of grade nine students at Jesus F. Magsaysay Technical Vocational High School. The study used quasi-experimental research method which involved fourthy five students in the control group and fourthy five in the experimental group. The control group was taught using the traditional method of instruction (TMI) while the experimental group was taught using the Frozen Theme Strategic Intervention Material (FT-SIM). A fifty-item conceptual test and the UAM Learning Strategies questionnaire were the tools used in the study. The study revealed that a typical Grade nine student is aged fourteen and male. Prior to the treatment, the Grade nine students in both the control and experimental groups were performing Fairly Satisfactory in terms of level of proficiency. After the treatment, the students' proficiency on UAM in the experimental group had improved to Very Satisfactory while the control group remained to be in the Fairly Satisfactory level. There is a significant difference in the level of proficiency of science students in the experimental group and no significant difference was noted in the control group. Both the control and experimental groups rarely practice the learning strategies in the uniformly accelerated motion (UAM), hence, the strategic intervention material was developed. To support and achieve the goals and objectives of the Department of Education, the researcher conducted seminar entitled Project FIERCE. The main purpose of this research was to determine the students' perspective and behavior towards research subject relative to the conduct of Project FIERCE. The study made use of the phenomenological type of qualitative approach, and the findings were drawn from semi-structured interviews. The nine (9) participants are all Senior High School students from New Taugtog National High School who completed and participated in three (3) - day seminar. Participants were asked about in what ways their perception and behavior regarding the research subject changed after participating in Project FIERCE seminar. It was found out that participants of the project FIERCE seminar gained knowledge and experience in research subjects, which resulted in a significant decrease in stress and a marked increase in confidence. This indicates the positive impact of Project FIERCE on research perspective and behavior. This research further concluded through Project FIERCE seminar, the participants acknowledged that the tasks in research subject can still be difficult, but they felt more capable and ready to take on challenges. With this positive result, it may lead to the success of attaining K-12 goals and objectives. Thus, it is highly recommended that the Department of Education should continue programs and policies that would support and provide seminars similar to Project FIERCE, which increase the perspection and behavior of students towards research subject. Writing a research paper is one of the major activities in educational institutions. In order to promote quality, the research writing process should be considered. This study aims to explore the specific research part where the students have difficulty writing the research paper. Identifying the weakest point can lead to the success of the research writing process. This study made an assessment of the competency level of the research students in writing their research paper. It utilized the quantitative descriptive method and followed the purposive sampling technique, wherein the lead researchers and writers were chosen as respondents in the study. Data revealed that females dominated the number of research leaders, and showed that the experimental research design was preferred by the research students. Moreso, it was revealed that students had difficulty in citing related literature and studies; writing the research questions in the Statement of the Problem; interpreting data; and formulating the research title. The recalibration of the research curriculum and integration of research parts with other subjects are recommended.

Background: Evaluating digital interventions using remote methods enables the recruitment of large numbers of participants relatively conveniently and cheaply compared with in-person methods. However, conducting research remotely based on participant self-report with little verification is open to automated "bots" and participant deception. Objective: This paper uses a case study of a remotely conducted trial of an alcohol reduction app to highlight and discuss (1) the issues with participant deception affecting remote research trials with financial compensation; and (2) the importance of rigorous data management to detect and address these issues. Methods: We recruited participants on the internet from July 2020 to March 2022 for a randomized controlled trial (n=5602) evaluating the effectiveness of an alcohol reduction app, Drink Less. Follow-up occurred at 3 time points, with financial compensation offered (up to £36 [US $39.23]). Address authentication and telephone verification were used to detect 2 kinds of deception: "bots," that is, automated responses generated in clusters; and manual participant deception, that is, participants providing false information. Results: Of the 1142 participants who enrolled in the first 2 months of recruitment, 75.6% (n=863) of them were identified as bots during data screening. As a result, a CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart) was added, and after this, no more bots were identified. Manual participant deception occurred throughout the study. Of the 5956 participants (excluding bots) who enrolled in the study, 298 (5%) were identified as false participants. The extent of this decreased from 110 in November 2020, to a negligible level by February 2022 including a number of months with 0. The decline occurred after we added further screening questions such as attention checks, removed the prominence of financial compensation from social media advertising, and added an additional requirement to provide a mobile phone number for identity verification. Conclusions: Data management protocols are necessary to detect automated bots and manual participant deception in remotely conducted trials. Bots and manual deception can be minimized by adding a CAPTCHA, attention checks, a requirement to provide a phone number for identity verification, and not prominently advertising financial compensation on social media. Background: Placebo-controlled trials can provide evidence to inform end-of-life care, but it is contested whether asking dying patients to participate in such trials is morally justifiable. To investigate the experiences of these patients is even more complex. Therefore, proxy assessments by relatives can be a good alternative. Aim: To explore the experience of participating in a placebo-controlled trial at the end of life from the perspective of bereaved relatives. Design: Mixed-method study, including questionnaires and interviews. Setting/participants: The SILENCE study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial on the efficacy of scopolamine butylbromide to prevent death rattle. The study was performed in six inpatient hospice facilities. Patients were asked to participate at admission in the hospice. Three months after the death of the patient, bereaved relatives were invited to fill in a questionnaire and to participate in an interview. One hundred four questionnaires were completed and 17 relatives were interviewed. Results: Fourteen percent of the relatives participating in the questionnaire study considered the participation of their loved one in research a bit burdensome and 10% considered it a bit stressful. Seventeen percent thought that it was a bit burdensome for the patient. Eighty-three percent considered participation in this type of research (very) valuable. The in-depth interviews showed that patients and relatives jointly decided about participation in this double-blind placebo-controlled medication trial. Relatives generally respected and felt proud about patients' decision to participate. Under current US statute, payments to research participants are taxable income. This means that even though institutional review boards and researchers agree to specific payment amounts to account for the burden of research, participants are paid less than anticipated, and participants' net payment will vary depending on their home state. Unlike other entities in the research enterprise, who receive incentivizing tax exemptions and credits, research participation is tax dis-incentivized. In addition, incentives and rewards for other socially valuable activities are not taxed. Given these differences and the restrictions on research payments, it is unfair to tax participants on their payments and the statue should be revised. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: With the increased popularity of mobile menstrual tracking apps and boosted Facebook posts, there is a unique opportunity to recruit research study participants from across the globe via these modalities to evaluate women’s health. However, no studies to date have assessed the feasibility of using these recruitment sources for epidemiological research on ovulation and menstruation. Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of recruiting a diverse sample of women to an epidemiological study of ovulation and menstruation (OM) health (OM Global Health Study) using digital recruitment sources. The feasibility and diversity were assessed via click and participation rates, geographic location, BMI, smoking status, and other demographic information. Methods: Participants were actively recruited via in-app messages using the menstrual tracking app Clue (BioWink GmbH) and a boosted Facebook post by DivaCup (Diva International Inc.). Other passive recruitment methods also took place throughout the recruitment period (eg, email communications, blogs, other social media). The proportion of participants who visited the study website after viewing and clicking the hypertext link (click rates) in the in-app messages and boosted Facebook post and the proportion of participants who completed the surveys per the number of completed consent and eligibility screeners (participation rates) were used to quantify the success of recruiting participants to the study website and study survey completion, respectively. Survey completion was defined as finishing the pregnancy and birth history section of the OM Global Health Study questionnaire. Results: The recruitment period was from February 27, 2018, through January 24, 2020. In-app messages and the boosted Facebook post were seen by 104,000 and 21,400 people, respectively. Overall, 215 participants started the OM Global Health Study survey, of which 140 (65.1%), 39 (18.1%), and 36 (16.8%) participants were recruited via the app, the boosted Facebook post, and other passive recruitment methods, respectively. The click rate via the app was 18.9% (19,700 clicks/104,000 ad views) and 1.6% via the boosted Facebook post (340 clicks/21,400 ad views.) The overall participation rate was 44.6% (198/444), and the average participant age was 21.8 (SD 6.1) years. In terms of geographic and racial/ethnic diversity, 91 (44.2%) of the participants resided outside the United States and 147 (70.7%) identified as non-Hispanic White. In-app recruitment produced the most geographically diverse stream, with 44 (32.8%) of the 134 participants in Europe, 77 (57.5%) in North America, and 13 (9.8%) in other parts of the world. Both human error and nonhuman procedural breakdowns occurred during the recruitment process, including a computer programming error related to age eligibility and a hacking attempt by an internet bot. Conclusions: In-app messages using the menstrual tracking app Clue were the most successful method for recruiting participants from many geographic regions and producing the greatest numbers of started and completed surveys. This study demonstrates the utility of digital recruitment to enroll participants from diverse geographic locations and provides some lessons to avoid technical recruitment errors in future digital recruitment strategies for epidemiological research. The publication aims to analyze public security and public order in conceptual and institutional terms as an analytical category of security sciences. The legislator defines neither public security nor public order. So far, they have been treated mainly as categories of administrative law. It is therefore important to assign them analytical content in the new scientific discipline. The research results allowed for the presentation of the thesis that public security and public order are mainly connected with protection against pathological phenomena occurring in the public space, which are minimized by institutions established to ensure it. These categories should constitute the research field (subject) of the security sciences. The research problem formulated in the form of the question: How are public security and public order treated in definitional and institutional terms? The problem was solved based on a critical analysis of the literature. The paper uses theoretical research methods, including analysis of literature and phenomena occurring in society and inference – as a cognitive factor of the subject of analysis. A critical analysis of the literature on this issue played a large role in the cognitive process.

Purpose of Review: The objective of this scoping review was to examine the range of published evidence on recruitment approaches and outcomes of US adolescents and young adults (AYA) ages (18–29 years) into human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)–related behavioral research studies during the past 10 years. Recent Findings: Implementation of effective behavioral research strategies among HIV at-risk and infected AYA is key to ending the HIV epidemic and necessitates successful recruitment strategies. Summary: A comprehensive search was executed across four electronic databases. Of the 1697 identified studies, seven met inclusion criteria with six of these seven directed to HIV prevention. Most studies used online recruitment as part of a hybrid strategy, and combined field-based/in-person and online methods. Recruitment strategies and outcomes, resources and compensation, procedures for consent, and timelines varied among all seven studies. Our results highlight the need for development of recruitment models in alignment with behavioral strategies aimed to treat and prevent HIV among US AYA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brain-Machine Interface (BMI) has moved to the forefront of neuroscientific trials as it not only establishes a direct communication pathway between the brain and an external device but enables the measuring of brain activity in research subjects whereby data is collected. With special emphasis on the somatechnics of BMI, this article analyses the relationship between this data collection process and actual patient care in chronic stroke rehabilitation. In doing so, it focuses on behaviour patterns associated with the use of specific technology that enables the scientist to use certain techniques in order to establish a hierarchy among research participants. In this hierarchy the scientist assumes a superior status to the research subject, an occurrence that is partially supported by using BMI technology and partially initiated by the need to generate data. Based on ethnographic studies of BMI research in hospitals and laboratories, the article outlines how this hierarchical structure in neuroscientific research leads to ethical questions in the quality of actual patient care. It continues to explore how patient care is affected mainly as a result of the changing status of the research subject from an initial bio-technical form that produces data in real time and whose brain is understood as an epistemic object to the patient being considered a 'perceptible' or 'plausible gestalt' (Lindemann 2009) and therefore a social person. Although focus lies on the status of the research subject as part of actual patient care, scientific data generation remains indispensable for medical advancement; that is curing the patient. The article draws conclusion by addressing this very problem and therewith intends to contribute empirically based insights to a socially relevant discourse on neuroscientific trials. This study aims to determine the development of Tropical Fauna Journal Zoo Indonesia which includes article distribution, patterns of authorship and fauna research subject at issue in 1983-2014. This study uses informetricsanalysis of all articles in the journal. The results showed: (1) the distribution of articles on every volume published by Zoo Indonesia have increased with the last number is six articles on each volume to its publication; (2) authorship patterns show the dominant by single author of 46,08%; and (3) research subjects that most discussed is about arthropods amounted to 30,41%. The conclusion is Zoo Indonesia on his way continuously tries to improve its quality as a scientific journal by a system of e-journal and also continue to fix both physically and editorial system aspects in it.

Introduction: Theses as an important part of postgraduate curriculum have a significant role in preparation and empowerment of graduates to participate in research activities. Therefore, proper directions and appropriate use of this opportunity to develop knowledge and special expertise are of great value. The present study aimed to carry out a thematic analysis of nursing MSc theses. Methods: This descriptive study examined all of the nursing theses written at Mashhad School of Nursing and Midwifery (221 theses) during two ten-year periods. Research tool was a researcher-made checklist which examined the theses in terms of the year, title, methodology, and research orientations. Its validity and reliability were verified by content validity and inter-rater assessment respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Findings indicated that the theses were oriented towards the effects of therapeutic interventions on patients’ problems and their improvements (38.9%) setting of norms, needs, problems of patients and their families (14%) impact of education on knowledge, attitude, and performance of nurses, patients and their families (11.8%) assessment of patients and nurses’ knowledge, attitude, and performance (8.1%) description of the situation and quality of care and nursing services (7.7%), performance, reviews and description of diseases, their complications, prevalence and incidence, and characteristics of patients (7.2%). Finally, there were significant differences in research orientations between the two decades. Conclusion: The results showed that nursing MSc theses lacked a specific orientation and were outside the nursing scope in numerous cases. Therefore, it is necessary that Mashhad School of Nursing and Midwifery, while seriously considering this issue, defines research directions which fit their situation and regional needs.

Introduction The Journal of Morphological Sciences (JMS), the official journal of the Brazilian Society of Anatomy, is an interesting option for researchers to publish in the field ofmorphology. It includes articles that cover a wide variety of topics, such as gross and microscopic human and animal anatomy, embryology, cell and molecular biology, clinical cases and reviews. We aimed to perform a bibliometric study to analyze the profile of JMS publications from 2000 to 2017, in order to understand in depth the origins of the researches and the subject of the manuscripts published in this journal. Material and Methods This is a descriptive bibliographical review research, with a bibliometric analysis of the scientific production of the JMS between 2000 and 2017. A total of 894 publications were analyzed, and they were distributed in 63 issues and organized into 18 volumes. Three groups of information were considered: a) "identification of the published articles;" b) "origin and authorship of the published articles;" and c) "research subject in the published articles.". Results Most of the published manuscripts were original articles (72.5%) and their subjects were mainly microscopic animal anatomy (27%) and gross human anatomy (26.6%). A total 63.3% of themanuscripts involved at least one Brazilian institution, and 59.4% of those were public institutions. Conclusion This manuscript provides an important contribution to those who are publishing in the JMS, since the authors can find a great deal of information on the quality of the science that is being published in the journal, as well as demographic information on authors and institutions. Background: Multiple research strategies are required to recruit and engage a representative cohort of young adults in diabetes research. In this report, we describe an approach for internet-based recruitment for a repeated-measures descriptive study., Objective: The objective of this cross-sectional study was to determine whether internet-based recruitment through multiple social media platforms, a clinical research platform, and cooperation with community partnerships-College Diabetes Network and Beyond Type 1-would serve as an effective way to recruit a representative sample of young adults aged 18-25 years with type 1 diabetes (T1D)., Methods: We conducted a repeated-measures descriptive study. We captured enrollment rates and participant characteristics acquired from each social media platform through survey data and Facebook analytics. This study was advertised via paid postings across a combination of different social media platforms (eg, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Reddit). We used quarterly application postings, quarterly newsletters, and participation in the ResearchMatch registry to identify potentially eligible participants from February 3, 2021, to June 6, 2022., Results: ResearchMatch proved to be the most cost-effective strategy overall, yielding the highest gender and racial diversity compared to other internet platforms (eg, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Reddit), application postings (eg, Beyond Type 1), and newsletters (eg, College Diabetes Network and a local area college). However, we propose that the combination of these approaches yielded a larger, more diverse sample compared to any individual strategy. Our recruitment cost was US $16.69 per eligible participant, with a 1.27% conversion rate and a 30% eligibility rate., Conclusions: Recruiting young adults with T1D across multiple internet-based platforms was an effective strategy to yield a moderately diverse sample. Leveraging various recruitment strategies is necessary to produce a representative sample of young adults with T1D. Background: Peers are an important determinant of health and well-being during late adolescence; however, there is limited quantitative research examining peer influence. Previous peer network research with adolescents faced methodological limitations and difficulties recruiting young people., Objective: This study aims to determine whether a web-based peer network survey is effective at recruiting adolescent peer networks by comparing 2 strategies for reimbursement., Methods: This study will use a 2-group randomized trial design to test the effectiveness of reimbursements for peer referral in a web-based cross-sectional peer network survey. Young people aged 16-18 years recruited through Instagram, Snapchat, and a survey panel will be randomized to receive either scaled group reimbursement (the experimental group) or fixed individual reimbursement (the control group). All participants will receive a reimbursement of Aus $5 (US $3.70) for their own survey completion. In the experimental group (scaled group reimbursement), all participants within a peer network will receive an additional Aus $5 (US $3.70) voucher for each referred participant who completes the study, up to a maximum total value of Aus $30 (US $22.20) per participant. In the control group (fixed individual reimbursement), participants will only be reimbursed for their own survey completion. Participants' peer networks are assessed during the survey by asking about their close friends. A unique survey link will be generated to share with the participant's nominated friends for the recruitment of secondary participants. Outcomes are the proportion of a participant's peer network and the number of referred peers who complete the survey. The required sample size is 306 primary participants. Using a multilevel logistic regression model, we will assess the effect of the reimbursement intervention on the proportion of primary participants' close friends who complete the survey. The secondary aim is to determine participant characteristics that are associated with successfully recruiting close friends. Young people aged 16-18 years were involved in the development of the study design through focus groups and interviews (n=26)., Results: Participant recruitment commenced in 2022., Conclusions: A longitudinal web-based social network study could provide important data on how social networks and their influence change over time. This trial aims to determine whether scaled group reimbursement can increase the number of peers referred.
