Heading perception in primates depends heavily on visual optic-flow cues. Yet during self-motion, heading percepts remain stable, even though smooth-pursuit eye movements often distort optic flow. According to theoretical work, self-motion can be represented accurately by compensating for these distortions in two ways: via retinal mechanisms or via extraretinal efference-copy signals, which predict the sensory consequences of movement. Psychophysical evidence strongly supports the efference-copy hypothesis, but physiological evidence remains inconclusive. Neurons that signal the true heading direction during pursuit are found in visual areas of monkey cortex, including the dorsal medial superior temporal area (MSTd). Here we measured heading tuning in MSTd using a novel stimulus paradigm, in which we stabilize the optic-flow stimulus on the retina during pursuit. This approach isolates the effects on neuronal heading preferences of extraretinal signals, which remain active while the retinal stimulus is prevented from changing. Our results from 3 female monkeys demonstrate a significant but small influence of extraretinal signals on the preferred heading directions of MSTd neurons. Under our stimulus conditions, which are rich in retinal cues, we find that retinal mechanisms dominate physiological corrections for pursuit eye movements, suggesting that extraretinal cues, such as predictive efference-copy mechanisms, have a limited role under naturalistic conditions.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Sensory systems discount stimulation caused by an animal's own behavior. For example, eye movements cause irrelevant retinal signals that could interfere with motion perception. The visual system compensates for such self-generated motion, but how this happens is unclear. Two theoretical possibilities are a purely visual calculation or one using an internal signal of eye movements to compensate for their effects. The latter can be isolated by experimentally stabilizing the image on a moving retina, but this approach has never been adopted to study motion physiology. Using this method, we find that extraretinal signals have little influence on activity in visual cortex, whereas visually based corrections for ongoing eye movements have stronger effects and are likely most important under real-world conditions.

This study aimed to evaluate subclinical retinal microvascular changes with OCTA in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE) patients without ocular involvement. Ten eyes of 10 JSLE and 13 eyes of 13 age and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. The superficial (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP), FAZ parameters, the flow area of the outer retina, and choriocapillaris were evaluated using OCTA. All vessel density (VD) parameters in DCP were significantly lower in JSLE group compared to HCs. There was no significant difference between the groups in VD parameters of both SCP and ONH, FAZ, outer retina and choriocapillaris flow area. All DCP VD parameters showed a good ability to differentiate JSLE from HCs. OCTA could detect retinal vascular impairment in the deep macular region in JSLE patients with normal ocular examination. Purpose: To quantitatively evaluate the acute effects of pseudoephedrine on the macular microvasculature using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Study design: Randomized placebo-controlled clinical study. Methods: In this study, 60 right eyes of 60 healthy subjects were divided into 2 groups. The study group received 60 mg of pseudoephedrine and the control group received a placebo. All participants underwent OCTA at baseline and 1 h after oral intake. Superficial macular flow area, foveal avascular zone (FAZ), superficial macular vessel density, central foveal thickness (CFT) and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) were analyzed. Results: Baseline superficial macular flow area, FAZ area, superficial macular vessel density, CFT and SFCT measurements in the study and control groups showed no significant difference (p > 0.05 for all). Oral pseudoephedrine intake caused a significant reduction in superficial macular flow area, FAZ area, superficial macular vessel density and SFCT measurements when compared with baseline (p < 0.05 for all). However, there was no significant difference in CFT after oral pseudoephedrine intake (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Oral pseudoephedrine intake causes a significant decrease in superficial macular blood flow and SFCT. Background: Parkinson's Disease (PD) is the second-most common neurodegenerative disease affecting the elderly population. The eye has been referred to as a window to the brain due to its inseparable relationship with the central nervous system. The development of Swept-Source Optical Coherence Tomography (SS-OCT) and Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) technologies has offered us a better imaging modality to study the impact of PD on the retina. Method: Seventy-five eyes of 42 early-stage PD patients and 150 eyes of 75 matched healthy controls were enrolled in the current study. We performed SS-OCT and SS-OCTA to assess retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), ganglion cell layer (GCL) + inner plexiform layer (IPL), internal nuclear layer (INL) thickness, and retinal flow density and flow ratio. Results: Our study indicates decreasing superficial and deep flow density in most regions of the retina. Superficial and deep flow parameters were also associated with RNFL, GCL+IPL, and INL thickness. ROC analysis reveals superficial flow density demonstrated an Area Under Curve (AUC) of 0.688, which is greater than deep flow density and retinal thickness measurements. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, we are the first study using SS-OCT and SS-OCTA to study superficial and deep retinal flow changes in early-stage PD patients. Our study suggests decreasing retinal flow density provides greater diagnostic power than retinal thickness measurements in the early stage of PD. Abstract: Stationary visual information has a stabilizing effect on posture, whereas moving visual information is destabilizing. We compared the influence of a stationary or moving fixation point to the influence of stationary or moving large-field stimulation, as well as the interaction between a fixation point and a large-field stimulus. We recorded body sway in 20 healthy subjects who were fixating a stationary or oscillating dot (vertical or horizontal motion, 1/3Hz, ±12° amplitude, distance 96cm). In addition, a large-field random dot pattern (extension: ∼80×70°) was stationary, moving or absent. Visual fixation of a stationary dot in darkness did not reduce antero-posterior (AP) sway compared to the situation in total darkness, but slightly reduced lateral sway at frequencies below 0.5Hz. In contrast, fixating a stationary dot on a stationary large-field pattern reduced both AP and lateral body sway at all frequencies (0.1–2Hz). Ocular tracking of the oscillating dot caused a peak in body sway at 1/3Hz, i.e. the stimulus frequency, but there was no influence of large-field stimulus at this frequency. A stationary large-field pattern, however, reduced AP and lateral sway at frequencies between 0.1 and 2Hz when subjects tracked a moving dot, compared to tracking in darkness. Our results demonstrate that a stationary large-field pattern has a stabilizing effect in all conditions, independent of whether the eyes are fixing on a stationary target or tracking a moving target.
