This study analyzes the prevalence of the sexual double standard using a diversity of measures. It examines a wider range of sexual attitudes and behaviours than have been used in previous double standard research. Young people ('N' = 413), ranging in age from 18 to 28, from three university classes and two dating bars were surveyed to determine their attitudes and behaviours regarding the double standard. Most men and women perceived the double standard to exist at the societal level but did not personally endorse it. Instead, most endorsed a single standard. However, a minority of men were more likely to endorse the double standard, whereas a minority of women were more likely to endorse a reverse double standard. The reality of the reverse double standard is a noteworthy finding. Men's responses suggest that they are aware of the reverse double standard and of the need to be cautious regarding their sexual behaviour. This study indicates that the double standard is more complex in nature than has previously been thought.
