Objective: The goal was to identify the lifestyle risk factors associated with benign and potentially malignant oral disorders. Method and materials: The study enrolled first-time patients from the Oral Pathology Section, volunteers from Oviedo, and first-time patients from the University of Oviedo dental clinic. Patients underwent a survey that included sociodemographic information, lifestyle habits, and medical history. A comprehensive examination of the oral mucosa was conducted. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were conducted using R software. Results: Among the 183 participants, the most prevalent lesions were varicose veins (43.20%), cheek/lip biting (34.97%), and coated tongue (33.33%). Among the oral potentially malignant disorders (16.39%) were oral lichen planus (12.64%) and leukoplakia (3.33%). Tobacco was associated with melanotic pigmentation (OR 3.87, P = .001) and coated tongue (OR 5.90, P = .001). Longer intervals since the last check-up were associated with traumatic keratosis (OR 2.95, P = .031). Age and heavy smoking were found to have higher risk of developing an oral potentially malignant disorder (OR 1.04, P = .035, and OR 7.35, P = .028, respectively). Conclusions: These data should be considered when organizing public health programs focused on the detection and screening of heavy smokers. It is also important to strengthen the oral pathology units in universities as reference centers for students to acquire the necessary knowledge for their diagnosis and treatment, while simultaneously promoting awareness of this risk factor for oral precancer among the general population. Purpose: To evaluate the soft tissue response to the placement of additively manufactured subperiosteal jaw implants (AMSJI) in the severely atrophic maxilla and to identify possible risk factors for soft tissue breakdown. Materials and Methods: An international multicenter study was conducted, and 15 men (mean age: 64.62 years; SD: ± 6.75) and 25 women (mean age: 65.24 years; SD: ± 6.77) with advanced maxillary jaw resorption (Cawood and Howell Class V or more) were included in this study. General patient data were collected, and all subjects were clinically examined. Inclusion criteria were patients who underwent bilateral AMSJI placement in the maxilla at least 1 year prior. Exclusion criteria were patients who did not have patient, surgeon, or dentist consent to participate in the study before their inclusion. Results: A total of 40 patients were enrolled, with a mean follow-up period of 917 days (SD: ± 306.89 days). Primary implant stability was achieved postoperatively in all cases, and all implants were loaded with a final prosthesis. At the time of the study, only 1 patient showed mobility (> 1 mm) of the bilateral AMSJI. Due to mucosal recession, exposure of the framework was seen in 26 patients (65%) and was mainly in the left (21.43% of 26) and right (18.57% of 26) midlateral region. A thin biotype and the presence of mucositis were found to be risk factors (P < .05). Although not significant, smokers had a risk of developing a recession that was nearly seven times (odds ratio: 6.88; P = .08) greater than that of nonsmokers. Conclusions: Twenty-six (65%) patients presented with a recession in one (or more) of the seven regions after oral rehabilitation with bilateral AMSJI placement. Several risk drivers were evaluated. INTRODUCTION: The LIfestyle for BRAin Health (LIBRA) index yields a dementia risk score based on modifiable lifestyle factors and is validated in Western samples. We investigated whether the association between LIBRA scores and incident dementia is moderated by geographical location or sociodemographic characteristics. METHODS: We combined data from 21 prospective cohorts across six continents (N = 31,680) and conducted cohort-specific Cox proportional hazard regression analyses in a two-step individual participant data meta-analysis. RESULTS: A one-standard-deviation increase in LIBRA score was associated with a 21% higher risk for dementia. The association was stronger for Asian cohorts compared to European cohorts, and for individuals aged ≤75 years (vs older), though only within the first 5 years of follow-up. No interactions with sex, education, or socioeconomic position were observed. DISCUSSION: Modifiable risk and protective factors appear relevant for dementia risk reduction across diverse geographical and sociodemographic groups. HIGHLIGHTS: A two-step individual participant data meta-analysis was conducted. This was done at a global scale using data from 21 ethno-regionally diverse cohorts. The association between a modifiable dementia risk score and dementia was examined. The association was modified by geographical region and age at baseline. Yet, modifiable dementia risk and protective factors appear relevant in all investigated groups and regions.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate whether psoriasis disease constitutes a risk factor for OLP, by assessing the prevalance of psoriasis in a test group with OLP and the control group without. Method and materials: A cohort of consecutive patients diagnosed clinically and histologically with OLP between 2014 and 2022 was analyzed. The results were contrasted with those obtained in control series matched for age and sex. The correlations between OLP and sex, age, tobacco, alcohol consumption, and psoriasis were assessed using Pearson chi-square test. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between psoriasis and OLP. For the assessment of the quality of the statistical models, the Akaike information criterion was used. Results: The study involved 1,016 patients; 738 women (72.6%) and 278 men (27.4%). The average age was 59.38 ± 12.55 years. Of 508 patients with OLP, 16 (3.15%) had comorbid psoriasis, and this was 5 (0.98%) in the control group. Age, sex, smoking, and alcohol habits were not predictive variables in the relationship between psoriasis and OLP in these patients. There were statistically significant differences in relation to the number of locations, with greater extension in patients with OLP and psoriasis (P = .002). According to the multivariate analysis, the odds ratio of OLP for psoriasis was 3.13 (95% CI 1.20-9.68). Conclusions: This is the first study showing the potential association between psoriasis and OLP, and the results should be considered to improve knowledge of comorbidity of OLP. Objective: The objectives were (1) to establish the strength of the association between incident cases of osteoarthritis (OA) and low back pain (LBP), and physical activity (PA) and to assess the likelihood of the associations being causal; and (2) to quantify the impact of PA on the burden of OA and LBP in Australia. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review in EMBASE and PubMed databases from January 01, 2000, to April 28, 2020. We used the Bradford Hill viewpoints to assess causality. We used a proportional multistate life table model to estimate the impact of changes in the PA levels on OA and LBP burdens for the 2019 Australian population (aged ≥ 20 y) over their remaining lifetime. Results: We found that both OA and LBP are possibly causally related to physical inactivity. Assuming causality, our model projected that if the 2025 World Health Organization global target for PA was met, the burden in 25 years' time could be reduced by 70,000 prevalent cases of OA and over 11,000 cases of LBP. Over the lifetime of the current adult population of Australia, the gains could add up to approximately 672,814 health-adjusted life years (HALYs) for OA (ie, 27 HALYs per 1000 persons) and 114,042 HALYs for LBP (ie, 5 HALYs per 1000 persons). The HALY gains would be 1.4 times bigger if the 2030 World Health Organization global target for PA was achieved and 11 times bigger if all Australians adhered to the Australian PA guidelines. Single-leg landings with or without subsequent jumping are frequently used to evaluate landing biomechanics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of subsequent jumping on the external knee abduction moment and trunk and hip biomechanics during single-leg landing. Thirty young adult female participants performed a single-leg drop vertical jumping (SDVJ; landing with subsequent jumping) and single-leg drop landing (SDL; landing without subsequent jumping). Trunk, hip, and knee biomechanics were evaluated using a 3-dimensional motion analysis system. The peak knee abduction moment was significantly larger during SDVJ than during SDL (SDVJ 0.08 [0.10] N·m·kg−1·m−1, SDL 0.05 [0.10] N·m·kg−1·m−1, P =.002). The trunk lateral tilt and rotation angles toward the support-leg side and external hip abduction moment were significantly larger during SDVJ than during SDL (P <.05). The difference in the peak hip abduction moment between SDVJ and SDL predicted the difference in the peak knee abduction moment (P =.003, R2 =.252). Landing tasks with subsequent jumping would have advantages for evaluating trunk and hip control as well as knee abduction moment. BackgroundTraumatic brain injury (TBI) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are potential risk factors for the development of dementia including Alzheimer's disease (AD) in later life. The findings of studies investigating this question are inconsistent though.ObjectiveTo investigate if these inconsistencies are caused by the existence of subgroups with different vulnerability for AD pathology and if these subgroups are characterized by atypical tau load/atrophy pattern.MethodsThe MRI and PET data of 89 subjects with or without previous TBI and/or PTSD from the DoD ADNI database were used to calculate an age-corrected gray matter tau mismatch metric (ageN-T mismatch-score and matrix) for each subject. This metric provides a measure to what degree regional tau accumulation drives regional gray matter atrophy (matrix) and can be used to calculate a summary score (score) reflecting the severity of AD pathology in an individual.ResultsThe ageN-T mismatch summary score was positively correlated with whole brain beta-amyloid load and general cognitive function but not with PTSD or TBI severity. Hierarchical cluster analysis identified five different spatial patterns of tau-gray matter interactions. These clusters reflected the different stages of the typical AD tau progression pattern. None was exclusively associated with PTSD and/or TBI.ConclusionsThese findings suggest that a) although subsets of patients with PTSD and/or TBI develop AD-pathology, a history of TBI or PTSD alone or both is not associated with a significantly higher risk to develop AD pathology in later life. b) remote TBI or PTSD do not modify the typical AD pathology distribution pattern.

BACKGROUND: With a gradually aging population, improving the ability to screen for the risk of death after arthroplasty and implementing timely personalized intervention programs for the increasing number of elderly patients with femoral neck fractures is key to improving the postoperative status of patients and prolonging survival expectations. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk factors for postoperative mortality in elderly patients with femoral neck fractures and to construct a nomogram predictive model to predict their mortality risk. METHODS: The study was conducted on 155 elderly patients (≥ 65 years old) who underwent arthroplasty for femoral neck fracture from January 2016 to January 2021, and 147 patients who met the inclusion criteria were analyzed to collect clinical data that may affect the patients’ postoperative mortality. Singlefactor and multi-factor Cox regression analyses were successively used to screen independent risk factors associated with postoperative mortality. The column line graph model was constructed and validated using Rstudio software. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) Age, frailty (age-adjusted Charlson comorbidities score), preoperative activity status, osteoporosis, and postoperative serum albumin level were five independent risk factors for postoperative mortality in elderly patients with femoral neck fractures (P < 0.05). (2) The nomogram predictive model was constructed based on the results of multifactorial analysis, with a consistency index of 0.819 (95%CI: 0.771-0.868). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the area under curve for 1-year and 3-year survival prediction was 0.854 3 and 0.726 3, respectively, indicating that the nomogram predictive model has good discriminatory and predictive power; calibration curve and decision curve analysis also showed good model discriminative power and clinical utility value. Contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) is a severe and devastating respiratory disease of goats, which is characterized by severe serofibrinous pleuropneumonia accompanied by high morbidity and mortality. A cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2022 to January 2023 to determine the seroprevalence of CCPP and identify risk factors associated with the occurrence of CCPP in goats in five selected districts of the South Wollo Zone of the Eastern Amhara region. A total of 384 sera samples were collected from goats and examined for antibodies specific to Mycoplasma capricolum subspecies capripneumoniae (Mccp) using Competitive Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (cELISA) test. Out of the total examined sera, 26 samples were positive for CCPP, giving an overall seroprevalence of 6.7% (95% CI = 6.64–9.77). A seroprevalence of 5.05%, 4.65%, 2.78%, 12.90%, and 10.77% were recorded in Ambasel, Tehuledere, Kalu, Dessie Zuria and Kutaber districts, respectively. However, there was no statistically significant difference among these five districts (p > 0.05). The seroprevalence of CCPP varies significantly between age groups and agroecology (p < 0.05). However, the seroprevalence did not vary with sex, body condition score (BCS), and flock size (p > 0.05). Old-aged goats (OR = 4.10) and goats found in the lowlands (OR = 5.09) were at higher risk of infection with CCPP than young-aged goats and goats found in the highlands, respectively. In conclusion, the present seroprevalence investigation indicated the occurrence of CCPP in those selected study districts of the South Wollo Zone. Therefore, appropriate control measures, including avoiding the mixing of flocks and vaccination should be designed and implemented especially in the lowland areas and older goats to reduce the further spread and magnitude of the disease. Background: Previous studies evaluating the association between prediabetes the prognosis of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) showed inconsistent results. The aim of the meta-analysis was to compare the long-term incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) between AMI patients with prediabetes and normoglycemia. Methods: Relevant prospective cohort studies were obtained by searching Medline, Web of Science, and Embase databases. Only studies with follow-up duration of at least one year were included. A random-effects model was utilized to pool the results by incorporating the influence of heterogeneity. Results: Twelve studies with 6972 patients with AMI were included. Among them, 2998 were with prediabetes and 3974 were with normoglycemia. During a mean follow-up of 52.6 months, 2100 patients developed MACEs. Compared to those with normoglycemia, AMI patients with prediabetes were associated with a higher incidence of MACEs (risk ratio [RR]: 1.30, 95% confidence interval: 1.07 to 1.58, p = 0.008; I2 = 67%). Subgroup analysis showed a stronger association between prediabetes and MACEs in studies of patients with mean age ≥ 60 years compared to < 60 years (RR: 1.66 versus 1.10, p for subgroup difference = 0.04), with proportion of men < 75% compared to ≥ 75% (RR: 1.87 versus 1.08, p for subgroup difference = 0.01), and in prediabetes evaluated at or after discharge compared to that evaluated within three days of AMI onset (RR: 1.39 versus 0.78, p for subgroup difference = 0.01). Background and Aims: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) poses a considerable health risk. Nevertheless, its risk factors are not thoroughly comprehended, and the association between the reticulocyte count and MASLD remains uncertain. This study aimed to explore the relationship between reticulocyte count and MASLD. Methods: A total of 310,091 individuals from the UK Biobank were included in this cross-sectional study, and 7,316 individuals were included in this prospective study. The cross-sectional analysis categorized reticulocyte count into quartiles, considering the sample distribution. Logistic regression models examined the connection between reticulocyte count and MASLD. In the prospective analysis, Cox analysis was utilized to investigate the association. Results: Our study findings indicate a significant association between higher reticulocyte count and an elevated risk of MASLD in both the cross-sectional and prospective analyses. In the cross-sectional analysis, the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of MASLD increased stepwise over reticulocyte count quartiles (quartile 2:OR 1.22, 95% CI 1.17-1.28, p < 0.001; quartile 3: OR 1.44; 95% CI 1.38-1.51, p < 0.001; quartile 4: OR 1.66, 95% CI 1.59-1.74, p < 0.001). The results of prospective analyses were similar. Conclusion: Increased reticulocyte count was independently associated with a higher risk of MASLD. The study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, risk factors, and clinical outcomes of pulmonary embolism in patients diagnosed with sepsis with and without shock. The National Inpatient Sample was used to identify adults with sepsis with and without shock between 2017 and 2019. The prevalence of acute pulmonary embolism and the association of acute pulmonary embolism with in-hospital mortality, hospital length of stay for survivors, and overall costs of hospitalization were evaluated. Multivariable logistic and linear regression analyses, adjusted for various parameters, were used to explore these associations. Of the estimated 5,019,369 sepsis hospitalizations, 1.2% of patients with sepsis without shock and 2.3% of patients with septic shock developed pulmonary embolism. The odds ratio for in-hospital mortality was 1.94 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.85–2.03, p < 0.001). The coefficient for hospital length of stay was 3.24 (95% CI 3.03–3.45, p < 0.001). The coefficient for total costs was 46,513 (95% CI 43,079–49,947, p < 0.001). The prevalence of pulmonary embolism in patients diagnosed with sepsis with and without shock was 1.2 and 2.3%, respectively. Purpose: Few studies have focused on the risk factors leading to postoperative blood transfusion after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of proximal humeral fractures (PHFs) in the elderly. Therefore, we designed this study to explore potential risk factors of blood transfusion after ORIF for PHFs. We have also established a nomogram model to integrate and quantify our research results and give feedback. Methods: In this study, we retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of elderly PHF patients undergoing ORIF from January 2020 to December 2021. We have established a multivariate regression model and nomograph. The prediction performance and consistency of the model were evaluated by the consistency coefficient and calibration curve, respectively. Results: 162 patients met our inclusion criteria and were included in the final study. The following factors are related to the increased risk of transfusion after ORIF: time to surgery, fibrinogen levels, intraoperative blood loss, and surgical duration. Conclusions: Our patient-specific transfusion risk calculator uses a robust multivariable model to predict transfusion risk.The resulting nomogram can be used as a screening tool to identify patients with high transfusion risk and provide necessary interventions for these patients (such as preoperative red blood cell mobilization, intraoperative autologous blood transfusion, etc.). Purpose: Major depressive disorder (MDD) and venous thromboembolism (VTE) may be linked in observational studies. However, the causal association remains ambiguous. Therefore, this study investigates the causal associations between them. Methods: We performed a two-sample univariable and multivariable bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to evaluate the associations between MDD and VTE. The summary genetic associations of MDD statistics were obtained from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium and UK Biobank. Information on VTE, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and pulmonary embolism (PE) were obtained from the FinnGen Biobank. Inverse-variance weighting was used as the main analysis method. Other methods include weighted median, MR- Egger, Simple mode, and Weighted mode. Results: Univariable MR analysis revealed no significant associations between MDD and VTE risk (odds ratio (OR): 0.936, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.736-1.190, p = 0.590); however, after adjusting the potential relevant polymorphisms of body mass index and education, the multivariable MR analysis showed suggestive evidence of association between them (OR: 1.163, 95% CI: 1.004-1.346, p = 0.044). Univariable MR analysis also revealed significant associations between MDD and PE risk (OR: 1.310, 95% CI: 1.073-1.598, p = 0.008), but the association between them was no longer significant in MVMR analysis (p = 0.072). We found no significant causal effects between MDD and DVT risk in univariable or multivariable MR analyses. There was also no clear evidence showing the causal effects between VTE, PE, or DVT and MDD risk. Conclusion: We provide suggestive genetic evidence to support the causal association between MDD and VTE risk. No causal associations were observed between VTE, PE, or DVT and MDD risk. Background: Chronic pelvic pain is a common disease that affects approximately 4% of women of reproductive age in developed countries. This number is estimated to be higher in developing countries, with a significant negative personal and socioeconomic impact on women. The lack of data on this condition in several countries, particularly those in development and in socially and biologically vulnerable populations such as the indigenous, makes it difficult to guide public policies. Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence of chronic pelvic pain (dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, non-cyclical pain) and identify which variables are independently associated with the presence of the condition in indigenous women from Otavalo-Ecuador. Design: A cross-sectional study was carried out including a sample of 2429 women of reproductive age between 14 and 49 years old, obtained from April 2022 to March 2023. A directed questionnaire was used, collected by bilingual interviewers (Kichwa and Spanish) belonging to the community itself; the number of patients was selected by random sampling proportional to the number of women estimated by sample calculation. Data are presented as case prevalence, odds ratio, and 95% confidence interval, with p < 0.05. Results: The prevalence of primary dysmenorrhea, non-cyclic pelvic pain, and dyspareunia was, respectively, 26.6%, 8.9%, and 3.9%.all forms of chronic pain were independently associated with each other. Additionally, dysmenorrhoea was independently associated with hypertension, intestinal symptoms, miscegenation, long cycles, previous pregnancy, use of contraceptives and pear body shape. Pain in other sites, late menarche, exercise, and pear body shape were associated with non-cyclic pelvic pain. And, urinary symptoms, previous pregnancy loss, miscegenation, and pear body shape were associated with dyspareunia. Conclusion: The prevalence of primary dysmenorrhea and non-cyclical chronic pelvic pain was notably high, in contrast with the frequency of reported dyspareunia. Briefly, our results suggest an association between dysmenorrhoea and conditions related to inflammatory and/or systemic metabolic disorders, including a potential causal relationship with other manifestations of pelvic pain, and between non-cyclical pelvic pain and signs/symptoms suggesting central sensitization. Background: Maternal Group B Streptococcus (GBS) colonization is influenced by many factors but results are inconsistent. Consideration of antenatal risk factors may help inform decision making on GBS microbiological culture screening where universal screening is not standard of care. We sought to identify independent predictors of GBS colonization at 34–37 weeks gestation incorporating vaginal symptoms, perineal hygiene measures, sexual activity, and a potential novel factor, constipation. Methods: In this prospective cross-sectional study, 573 women at 34–37 weeks gestation had an ano-vaginal swab taken and sent for selective culture for GBS. Women were asked about vaginal bleeding, discharge, irritation and candidiasis, antibiotic use during pregnancy, ano-vaginal hygiene practices such as douching and perineal cleansing after toileting, sexual intercourse related activities, and a potential novel factor for GBS carriage, constipation. Maternal basic demographics and obstetric-related characteristics were also collected. Bivariate analyses were performed to identify associates of GBS colonization. All variables with p < 0.05 found on bivariate analysis were then included into a model for multivariable binary logistic regression analysis to identify independent risk factors for GBS colonization. Results: GBS colonization was found in 235/573 (41.0%) of participants. Twenty six independent variables were considered for bivariate analysis. Eight were found to have p < 0.05. Following adjusted analysis, six independent predictors of GBS colonization were identified: ethnicity, previous neonatal GBS prophylaxis, antenatal vaginal irritation, antibiotic use, recent panty liner use, and frequency of sexual intercourse. Vaginal discharge and perineal cleansing were not associated after adjustment. Recent douching and constipation were not associated on bivariate analysis. Conclusion: The identification of independent predictors of GBS colonization in late pregnancy may inform the woman and care provider in their shared decision making for microbiological screening at 35–38 weeks gestation in locations where universal GBS screening is not standard of care. Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) is the second most common malignant primary liver cancer. iCCA may develop on an underlying chronic liver disease and its incidence is growing in relation with the epidemics of obesity and metabolic diseases. In contrast, perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (pCCA) may follow a history of chronic inflammatory diseases of the biliary tract. The initial management of CCAs is often complex and requires multidisciplinary expertise. The French Association for the Study of the Liver wished to organize guidelines in order to summarize the best evidence available about several key points in iCCA and pCCA. These guidelines have been elaborated based on the level of evidence available in the literature and each recommendation has been analysed, discussed and voted by the panel of experts. They describe the epidemiology of CCA as well as how patients with iCCA or pCCA should be managed from diagnosis to treatment. Lysozyme level or lymphocytopenia did not have a statistically significant effect on the probability of uveitis in a binary logistic regression analysis. Introduction: Immune cells are dynamic in the inflammatory environment and play a key role in eradicating periodontal pathogens, modulating immune responses, and instigating tissue destruction. Identifying specific immune cell phenotypes associated with periodontitis risk is essential for targeted immunotherapeutic interventions. However, the role of certain specific immune cell phenotypes in the development of periodontitis is unknown. Mendelian randomization offers a novel approach to reveal causality and address potential confounding factors through genetic instruments. Methods: This two-sample Mendelian randomization study assessed the causal relationship between 731 immune cell phenotypes and periodontitis using the inverse variance weighting method with the GWAS catalog genetic database. Methodological robustness was ensured through Cochran's Q test, MR-Egger regression, MR-PRESSO, and Leave-One-Out analysis. Results: 14 immune cell phenotypes showed potential positive causal associations with periodontitis risk (p < 0.05), suggesting an increased risk, while 11 immune cell phenotypes exhibited potential negative causal associations (p < 0.05), indicating a reduced risk. No significant heterogeneity or pleiotropy was observed. This study investigated the etiology, clinical features, and prognosis of patients diagnosed with bilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss (BSSNHL). The clinical data of 100 patients with bilateral sudden hearing loss as a chief complaint treated at Xiangya Second Hospital of Central South University between January 2010 and August 2022, including clinical characteristics, audiometric data, and prognosis, were retrospectively analyzed. These 100 cases accounted for 8.09% (100/1235) of all patients admitted for sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) during the same period. Of these, 71 were simultaneous cases and 29 were sequential cases of BSSNHL. Among the 200 ears analyzed in this study, 13, 36, 57, and 94 had mild, moderate, severe, and profound sensorineural hearing loss, respectively. The overall effective rate after comprehensive treatment was 32%, with significant differences in efficacy and prognosis among different degrees of hearing loss (p < 0.05). Comorbidities of hypertension (24 cases), diabetes (14 cases), and coronary heart disease (9 cases) significantly impacted therapeutic efficacy and prognosis in patients with BSSNHL (p < 0.05). Background: Obesity and diabetes have been associated with depressive symptoms. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the association between the triglyceride glucose index (TyG index) a novel indicator of insulin resistance (IR) and depression in the adult population. Methods: Relevant observational studies were acquired through comprehensive searches of the Medline, Web of Science, Embase, Wanfang, and China National Knowledge Internet databases. To account for heterogeneity, a random-effects model was employed to combine the findings. Additionally, multiple subgroup analyses were conducted to assess the impact of various study characteristics on the outcome. Results: The meta-analysis comprised eight datasets from six cross-sectional studies, encompassing a total of 28,973 adults. The pooled findings suggested that subjects with a high TyG index, compared to those with a low TyG index, were associated with a higher prevalence of depression (odds ratio [OR]: 1.41, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.28–1.56, p<0.001; I² = 19%). Sensitivity analyses, by omitting one dataset at a time, showed consistent results (OR: 1.39–1.45, p<0.05). Further subgroup analyses showed consistent results in participants aged <50 years old and in those aged ≥50 years old, in men and in women, in studies with different cutoff values for the TyG index, and in studies with different methods for the diagnosis of depression (for each subgroup difference, p>0.05). Background: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a severe form of stroke with high mortality and limited treatment options. While traditional risk factors like hypertension have been well-studied, the role of emotional states as acute triggers for ICH remains unclear. This study employs Mendelian Randomization (MR) to investigate the causal relationship between emotional traits of worry and anxiety and the incidence of ICH. Methods: We used a two-sample MR approach, leveraging summary-level data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for emotional traits and ICH. The primary analysis was conducted using the Inverse-Variance Weighted (IVW) method, supplemented by multiple sensitivity analyses including Maximum Likelihood and MR PRESSO methods. Results: Our MR analysis revealed a robust and significant causal relationship between the emotional trait "Worrier/anxious feelings" and ICH, supported by 195 instrumental variables (SNPs). The odds ratio (OR) was 2.98 (95% CI: 1.16, 7.61) with a p-value of 0.0229. Sensitivity analyses corroborated these findings, enhancing the reliability of our results. In contrast, other emotional traits such as "Nervous feelings" and "Sensitivity/hurt feelings" did not show significant associations, reinforcing the specificity of our primary finding. Conclusion: Our study provides compelling evidence for a causal relationship between the emotional traits of worry and anxiety and the incidence of ICH, offering a new dimension in our understanding of this devastating condition and paving the way for more nuanced risk stratification and preventive strategies. Background: The presence of distinct long‐term disease‐specific HRQL trajectories after curative treatment for esophageal cancer and factors associated with such trajectories are unclear. Materials and Methods: This population‐based and longitudinal cohort study included 425 esophageal cancer patients who underwent curative treatment, including esophagectomy, in Sweden in 2001–2005 and were followed up until 2020, that is, 15‐year follow‐up. The outcomes were 10 disease‐specific HRQL symptoms, measured by the well‐validated EORTC QLQ‐OES18 questionnaire at 6 months (n = 402 patients), and 3 (n = 178), 5 (n = 141), 10 (n = 92), and 15 years (n = 52) after treatment. HRQL symptoms were examined for distinct trajectories by growth mixture models. Weighted logistic regression models provided odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for nine factors in relation to HRQL trajectories: age, sex, education, proxy baseline HRQL, comorbidity, tumor histology, chemo(radio)therapy, pathological tumor stage, and postoperative complications. Results: Distinct HRQL trajectories were identified for each of the 10 disease‐specific symptoms. HRQL trajectories with more symptoms tended to persist or alleviate over time, while trajectories with fewer symptoms were more stable. Eating difficulty had three trajectories: persistently less, persistently moderate, and persistently more symptoms. The OR of having a persistently more eating difficulty trajectory was decreased for adenocarcinoma histology (OR = 0.44, 95% CI 0.21–0.95), and increased for pathological tumor stage III‐IV (OR = 2.19, 95% CI 0.99–4.82) and 30‐day postoperative complications (OR = 2.54, 95% CI 1.26–5.12). Conclusion: Distinct trajectories with long‐term persistent or deteriorating disease‐specific HRQL symptoms were identified after esophageal cancer treatment. Background: Uterine rupture is a rare, but dangerous obstetric complication that can occur during trial of vaginal birth. Methods: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between peripartum infection at the first caesarean delivery to uterine dehiscence or rupture at the subsequent delivery. We conducted a retrospective case-control study from March 2014 to October 2020 at a single academic medical center. The study group included women with a prior caesarean delivery and proven dehiscence or uterine rupture diagnosed during their subsequent delivery. The control group included women who went through a successful vaginal birth after cesarean section (VBAC) without evidence of dehiscence or uterine rupture. We compared the rate of peripartum infection during the first cesarean delivery (CD) and other relevant variables, between the two groups. Results: A total of 168 women were included, 71 with uterine rupture or dehiscence and 97 with successful VBAC as the control group. The rate of peripartum infection at the first caesarean delivery was significantly higher in the study group compared to the control group (22.2% vs. 8.2%, p = 0.013). Multivariate logistic regression analysis found that peripartum infection remained an independent risk factor for uterine rupture at the subsequent trial of labor after CD (95% confidence interval, p = 0.034). This study evaluated the level of risk practices and awareness of leptospirosis among residents of Zaria, Nigeria. A pre-tested questionnaires were administered via face-to-face interview to 100 residents. The data was analyzed using chi-square and multivariate analysis to identify risk factors for leptospirosis. The demography showed that the majority of the respondents were male, aged 21–40 years, and majorly crop farmers. The risk factors identified showed that males were 4.14 times more likely to be affected by leptospirosis (OR 4.14, 95% CI [1.93–5.37], p = 0.02) and the source of animal's water was 5.56 times more likely to be contaminated by Leptospira spp. (OR 4.14, 95% CI [2.88–8.03], p = 0.01) and these relationships were significant. The majority of respondents were not aware of the disease (OR 1.87, 95% CI [1.22–4.57], p = 0.01) with 78% of the respondents not sure of which of the animal species leptospirosis affected (OR 1.67, 95% CI [1.07–2.62], p = 0.02). This study has demonstrated the existence of risk behaviors, and paucity of knowledge about leptospirosis in the study area. Objective: To identify independent risk factors of pulmonary infection in intensive care unit (ICU) patients, and to construct a prediction model. Methods: Medical data of 398 patients treated in the ICU of Jiaxing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January 2019 to January 2023 were analyzed. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify independent risk factors for pulmonary infection in ICU patients. R software was used to construct a nomogram prediction model, and the prediction model was internally validated using computer simulation bootstrap method. Predictive value of the model was analyzed using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results: A total of 97 ICU patients (24.37%) developed pulmonary infection. Age, ICU stay time, invasive operation, diabetes, duration of mechanical ventilation, and state of consciousness were all identified as risk factors for pulmonary infection. The calibration curve of the constructed nomogram prediction model showed a good consistency between the predicted value of the model and the actual observed value. ROC curve analysis showed that the area under the curve (AUC) of the model was 0.784 (95% CI: 0.731-0.837), indicating a certain predictive value. Conclusions: Age, length of stay in ICU, invasive operation, diabetes, duration of mechanical ventilation, and state of consciousness are risk factors for pulmonary infection in ICU patients. Background: Severe bleeding remains a significant concern in laparoscopic resection for hepatic hemangioma. It is rarely reported that how the degree of major vessels involvement impacts on severe bleeding. The present study primarily aimed to analyze the impacts of the number of involved major vessels (NIMV) during laparoscopic surgery for hepatic hemangioma and evaluate the risk factors associated with increased bleeding. Methods: A database search was carried out for consecutive patients who underwent laparoscopic resection for liver hemangiomas at our department from January 2018 to December 2023. The collected data included demographics, characteristics of the hemangiomas, laboratory data, operation method, surgical and postoperative variables. Results: A total of 72 patients were enrolled in the study. 42 patients were categorized into the group with NIMV < 2, while 30 patients were divided into the group with NIMV ≥ 2. The group with NIMV ≥ 2 demonstrated a significant correlation with special segments, involved multiple segments and diameter of the hemangiomas (P < 0.01). And the perioperative variables including the extent of resection, operative time, blood loss, Pringle maneuver times, postoperative stay, drainage tube duration, and postoperative liver function (ALT, AST) also showed significant differences between the two groups (P < 0.05). Notably, NIMV ≥ 2 was identified as the most important independent risk factor for intraoperative blood loss ≥ 500 ml in laparoscopic surgery for hepatic hemangioma (P = 0.011). For NIMV ≥ 2, the independent risk factor was special segments in multivariate analysis (P = 0.000). Conclusion: The involvement of multiple major vessels (NIMV ≥ 2) was significantly associated with special segments, resulting in increased intraoperative blood loss, operation difficulty, and delayed postoperative recovery. Background: Anastomotic stricture significantly impacts patients' quality of life and long-term prognosis. However, current clinical practice lacks accurate tools for predicting anastomotic stricture. This study aimed to develop a nomogram to predict anastomotic stricture in patients with rectal cancer who have undergone anterior resection. Methods: A total of 1542 eligible patients were recruited for the study. Least absolute shrinkage selection operator (Lasso) analysis was used to preliminarily select predictors. A prediction model was constructed using multivariate logistic regression and presented as a nomogram. The performance of the nomogram was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, calibration diagrams, and decision curve analysis (DCA). Internal validation was conducted by assessing the model's performance on a validation cohort. Results: 72 (4.7%) patients were diagnosed with anastomotic stricture. Participants were randomly divided into training (n = 1079) and validation (n = 463) sets. Predictors included in this nomogram were radiotherapy, diverting stoma, anastomotic leakage, and anastomotic distance. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) for the training set was 0.889 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.840–0.937] and for the validation set, it was 0.930 (95%CI 0.879–0.981). The calibration curve demonstrated a strong correlation between predicted and observed outcomes. DCA results showed that the nomogram had clinical value in predicting anastomotic stricture in patients after anterior resection of rectal cancer. Conclusion: We developed a predictive model for anastomotic stricture following anterior resection of rectal cancer. Background: Post-endoscopic submucosal dissection electrocoagulation syndrome (PEECS) is an uncommon complication after colorectal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). This study aimed to explore the risk factors of PEECS for superficial colorectal lesions based on the latest and consistent diagnostic criteria and to establish a predictive nomogram model. Methods: This retrospective analysis included patients with superficial colorectal lesions who underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) between June 2008 and December 2021 in our center. The independent risk factors of PEECS for superficial colorectal lesions were identified using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) logistic regression analysis, as well as univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression, and derived predictive nomogram model was constructed. Results: Among the 555 patients with superficial colorectal lesions enrolled, PEECS occurred in 45 (8.1%) patients. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that female sex (OR 3.94, P < 0.001), age > 50 years (OR 4.28, P = 0.02), injury to muscle layer (OR 10.38, P < 0.001), non-lifting sign (OR 2.20, P = 0.04) and inadequate bowel preparation (OR 5.61, P < 0.001) were independent risk factors of PEECS for superficial colorectal lesions. A predictive nomogram model was constructed based on the above five predictors. For this model, the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was 0.855, the calibration curve exhibited good consistency between the prediction and the actual observation, and the C-index was confirmed as 0.843 by bootstrap method. Conclusion: Female sex, age > 50 years, injury to muscle layer, non-lifting sign and inadequate bowel preparation were independent risk factors of PEECS for superficial colorectal lesions. Purpose: This study identified risk factors for neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) through multidimensional analysis of the medical records of patients, aiming to reduce the incidence of NLUTD, improve prognosis, and facilitate rehabilitation. Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, patients with AIS were recruited from two tertiary general hospitals in Shenzhen, China, from March 2021 to October 2023. Patients were divided into NLUTD and non-NLUTD groups based on the presence and absence of NLUTD, respectively. Comparative analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U and chi-square tests, with significant variables being included in logistic regression analysis. Results: Of the 652 participants enrolled in this study, 119 participants (18.3%) developed NLUTD. Bivariate analysis showed that 39 of 54 screened factors exhibited a significant correlation (p<0.05) with the incidence of NLUTD after AIS. Significant variables identified through logistic regression analysis included Glasgow coma scale (GCS) and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores, anemia, aphasia, pneumonia, brainstem involvement, multiple lesions, urine clarity (CLA), random venous blood glucose (GLU) and hemoglobin (HGB) levels, and white blood cell (WBC) count. Conclusions: A total of 11 risk factors for NLUTD were identified in this study. To evaluate the risk factors of new osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) after percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP). From January 2016 to November 2019, patients suffering from OVCFs were retrospectively reviewed. The independent influence factors for new OVCFs after PVP were assessed, from following variables: age, sex, body mass index, bone mineral density (BMD), history of alcoholism, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, glucocorticoid use, and prior vertebral fractures, the number of initial fractures, mean cement volume, method of puncture, D-type of cement leakage, and regular antiosteoporosis treatment. A total of 268 patients with 347 levels met the inclusion criteria and were finally included in this study. Forty-nine levels of new OVCFs among 33 patients (12.31%) were observed during the follow-up period. It indicated that female (adjusted odds ratio [OR]: 6.812, 95% confidence interval {CI}: [1.096, 42.337], P = 0.040), lower BMD (adjusted OR: 0.477, 95% CI: [0.300, 0.759], P = 0.002), prior vertebral fractures (adjusted OR: 16.145, 95% CI: [5.319, 49.005], P = 0.000), and regular antiosteoporosis treatment (adjusted OR: 0.258, 95% CI: [0.086, 0.774], P = 0.016) were independent influence factors for new OVCF. The cut-off value of BMD to reach new OVCF was −3.350, with a sensitivity of 0.660 and a specificity of 0.848. Female, lower BMD (T-score of lumbar), prior vertebral fractures, and regular antiosteoporosis treatment were independent influencing factors. We aimed to comprehensively analyze the epidemiology, natural history, stroke events and their risk factors, and the RNF213 p.Arg4810Lys variant in older patients with moyamoya disease (MMD). We enrolled patients with MMD followed-up at our hospital between 2000 and 2023. Those who developed MMD at age ≥60 years or were diagnosed at a younger age and followed-up after age 60 years were included. Baseline characteristics, onset type, radiologic features, and RNF213 p.Arg4810Lys variant status were investigated. Among 56 patients with 100 affected hemispheres, 62 were asymptomatic, 26 experienced ischemic onset, and 12 had hemorrhagic onset. A higher incidence of anterior choroidal artery (AchA) dilatation and lower proportion of favorable modified Rankin scale scores were detected in hemorrhagic onset, whereas greater prevalence of bypass surgery in ischemic onset. Of 76 asymptomatic hemispheres at the age of 60 years, subsequent stroke events occurred in 10 hemispheres, comprising 8 hemorrhages and 2 ischemias. Risk factors for de novo hemorrhage in asymptomatic hemispheres included AchA dilatation and choroidal anastomosis. Comparison of the RNF213 p.Arg4810Lys variant status showed no significant differences in baseline characteristics, onset types, or imaging findings, except for a higher percentage of patients in the GA group with a family history of MMD. Hemorrhagic events were the most prevalent and prognostically deteriorating factors in older patients with MMD aged ≥60 years. Background: To date, the magnitude of association and the quality of evidence for cognitive decline (mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, and dementia) in couples and risk factors for outcomes have not been reviewed and analyzed systematically. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the concordance of cognitive impairment in unrelated spouses and to qualitatively describe potential risk factors. Methods: Eight databases were searched from inception to October 20, 2023. Eligible studies were independently screened and assessed for quality. Statistical analysis was conducted using Stata 15.1 software. The study was preregistered with PROSPERO (CRD42023488024). Results: Eleven studies involving couples were included, with moderate to high evidence quality. Compared to controls, spouses of individuals with cognitive impairment had lower cognitive scores (Cohen's d: 0.18-0.62) and higher risk of cognitive decline (OR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.15–1.76). The consistency of cognitive impairment between spouses was attributed to three theories: 1) the impact of caregiving stress experienced by the spouse; 2) assortative mating, which suggests that individuals select partners with similar characteristics; and 3) the influence of shared living environments and lifestyles. Conclusions: The cognitive status of one spouse can affect the cognitive function of the other spouse. It is important to consider shared lifestyle, environmental, and psychobehavioral factors, as they may contribute to the risk of cognitive decline by couples. Purpose: To summarize the available evidence on risk factors for preoperative frailty in older gastric cancer patients. Methods: We comprehensively searched the CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, CBM, PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and CINAHL databases for preoperative articles on risk factors for frailty in older gastric cancer patients. The search was conducted from the time of construction of the library to January 27, 2024, with no language restrictions. The quality of the included studies was rated by the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality tool. Results: A total of 20 studies were included, including 16 cohort studies and 4 cross-sectional studies, with a total sample size of 51,717 individuals. The results of the meta-analysis showed that age, albumin, hemoglobin, cancer stage III-IV, Charlson Comorbidity Index score ≥ 3, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group score > 2, American Society of Anesthesiologists score > 2, smoking, nutritional risk, high school degree or above, and sleep disorders are the main influencing factors for the occurrence of preoperative frailty in older gastric cancer patients. Among them, high school degree or above was a protective factor. Conclusions: Our study provides valid evidence of risk factors for preoperative frailty in older patients with gastric cancer and informs clinical healthcare professionals to make targeted interventions. School absenteeism is a major societal problem, with a range of potential adverse long-term consequences. This scoping review aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the research on school absenteeism in autistic children and adolescents, expose important gaps in the literature, and explore possibilities for future systematic reviews. Five relevant databases were searched systematically from inception to June 2023, yielding a total of 46 eligible reports from 42 separate studies. All studies were conducted in high-income countries, and most were published in the last decade. Three major themes emerged: occurrence, contextual factors, and interventions. The results of large-scale population-based studies clearly suggested that autistic children and adolescents were absent from school more often than their non-autistic peers, which partly was attributable to co-occurring conditions. Bullying also emerged as a potential risk factor. Only a few preliminary studies were available on targeted interventions, emphasizing the need for more robust studies. More research is also needed on the mechanisms leading to and maintaining school absenteeism in this group of learners. Overall, the diversity of research questions, methods, and definitions used in this body of research suggests that systematic reviews with narrow focus on a few key questions may still be premature. Autistic children and teenagers are, on average, absent from school more than their peers. The aim of this review was to provide an overview of the research on absence from school in autistic learners in primary and secondary school, to help guide future research. We sifted through 4632 reports and found 42 studies with a focus on school absence and autism. We looked at how, when, and where the studies were conducted. We also summarized the results and outlined how absence was measured in the studies. Absence from school may lead to problems later in life, like incomplete education and unemployment. It is therefore important to know how common this problem is among autistic learners, what the reasons may be, and what type of support they need. The studies were from high-income countries and were mainly published in the last 10 years. Studies based on school registers from the United States and the United Kingdom clearly showed that children and teenagers with autism had higher risk of school absence than those without autism. Absence was often linked to problems with mental health or additional neurodevelopmental conditions. Several studies also showed that absence in autistic children and adolescents was related to problems in school, like bullying or lack of knowledge about autism. Support programs were only evaluated in a few studies with a small number of study participants. Background: Lymph node metastasis (LNM) occurs in 20–25% of patients with T2 colorectal cancer (CRC). Identification of risk factors for LNM in T2 CRC may help identify patients who are at low risk and thereby potential candidates for endoscopic full-thickness resection. We examined risk factors for LNM in T2 CRC with the goal of establishing further criteria of the indications for endoscopic resection. Methods: MEDLINE, CENTRAL, and EMBASE were systematically searched from inception to November 2023. Studies that investigated the association between the presence of LNM and the clinical and pathological factors of T2 CRC were included. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Certainty of evidence (CoE) was assessed using the GRADE approach. Results: Fourteen studies (8349 patients) were included. Overall, the proportion of LNM was 22%. The meta-analysis revealed that the presence of lymphovascular invasion (OR, 5.5; 95% CI 3.7–8.3; high CoE), high-grade tumor budding (OR, 2.4; 95% CI 1.5–3.7; moderate CoE), poor differentiation (OR, 2.2; 95% CI 1.8–2.7; moderate CoE), and female sex (OR, 1.3; 95% CI 1.1–1.7; high CoE) were associated with LNM in T2 CRC. Lymphatic invasion (OR, 5.0; 95% CI 3.3–7.6) was a stronger predictor of LNM than vascular invasion (OR, 2.4; 95% CI 2.1–2.8). Conclusions: Lymphovascular invasion, high-grade tumor budding, poor differentiation, and female sex were risk factors for LNM in T2 CRC. Recurrent simple febrile seizure (SFS) refers to febrile seizure (FS) that recurs within 24 hours. Patients with recurrent SFS often undergo unnecessary neurodiagnostic tests. To address this, we compared the clinical characteristics of recurrent SFS with those of SFS and investigated the risk factors associated with recurrent SFS. We retrospectively reviewed electronic medical records of patients aged six to 60 months who had been hospitalized for FS at two training hospitals between January 2016 and December 2019. The primary outcome was a comparison of the clinical features of patients with SFS and recurrent SFS. Additionally, the risk factors associated with seizure recurrence within 24 hours were evaluated. Three quarters (n = 191, 75.2%) of the 254 enrolled patients experienced a single seizure episode during the febrile illness period. The remaining 63 patients (24.8%) were diagnosed with recurrent SFS. Significant differences between SFS and recurrent SFS were observed in the history of recurrent SFS, time from fever onset to seizure, and body temperature on hospital arrival. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that a history of previous recurrent SFS (odds ratio [OR] 10.161) and a body temperature below 39°C on arrival (OR 2.377) were significantly associated with early seizure recurrence. This study highlights that early FS recurrence is common and has a self-limiting clinical course similar to that of SFS. We recommend close monitoring of the patient for six to eight hours when a history of early recurrence is present or if the seizure occurs at a low body temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Osteoporosis and major depressive disorder (MDD) represent two significant health challenges globally, particularly among perimenopausal women. This study utilizes NHANES data and Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to explore the link between them, aiming to provide a basis for intervention strategies for this group. The study analyzed NHANES 2007–2018 data using weighted logistic regression in R software to evaluate the link between MDD and osteoporosis risk. Then, a two-sample MR analysis with GWAS summary statistics was performed, mainly using the IVW method. Additional validation included MR Egger, Weighted Median, Mode, and MR-PRESSO methods. The research analysis indicated a significant link between MDD and the risk of osteopenia/osteoporosis. Our analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between MDD and both femoral neck osteoporosis (OR = 6.942 [95 % CI, 1.692–28.485]) and trochanteric osteoporosis (OR = 4.140 [95 % CI, 1.699–10.089]). In analyses related to osteopenia, a significant positive correlation was observed between MDD and both total femoral osteopenia (OR = 3.309 [95 % CI, 1.577–6.942]) and trochanteric osteopenia (OR = 2.467 [95 % CI, 1.004–6.062]). Furthermore, in the MR analysis, genetically predicted MDD was causally associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis via the IVW method (P = 0.013). Our study was limited by potential selection bias due to excluding subjects with missing data, and its applicability was primarily to European and American populations. Integrating NHANES and MR analyses, a robust correlation between MDD and osteoporosis was identified, emphasizing the significance of addressing this comorbidity within clinical practice and meriting further investigation. • Analysis of NHANES clinical data revealed a positive correlation between MDD and OP. • There exists a causal association between MDD and OP at the genetic level. • By integrating clinical and genetic data, the study offered insights into the comorbidity mechanisms between MDD and OP. • It is recommended to incorporate mental health assessments into the routine evaluation of patients with OP. Purposes: This scoping review aims to determine the family factors that influenced the occurrence of bullying among adolescents in Asian countries. Therefore, the research questions behind this review are as follows: What protective factors and risk factor are known to influence bullying among adolescent in Asian countries? Method: This study used PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews reporting guidelines. Search strategy in this study employs four electronic databases resources, SAGE, Springerlink, Science Direct, and Proquest. Result: Researchers compiled previous relevant quantitative and qualitative research to investigate family as a protective factor and a risk factor for adolescent bullying. The search on the database resulted in 28 studies published from 2012 to 2021 which have been analyzed. Parental bonding was the most common protective factor found in the literature, followed by warm parenting, parental involvement, parents' support and acceptance. The risk factors for bullying included slapping, authoritarian parenting, parental control, weak family attachment, parental neglect, poor parental support, and poor communication with family. Applications/Originality/Value: The conclusion from this research is the scoping review results revealed that family variables became the protective and risk factors for adolescent bullying in the Asian context. The findings suggested that family was also an influential factor in adolescent bullying in the Asian context, in line with previous relevant studies in Western countries. Background: Hypothyroidism and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) are common disorders affecting various systems of the body, including the endocrine and visual systems. While previous studies have suggested a potential association between hypothyroidism and POAG, the precise nature of this relationship remains unclear. This case-control study aims to investigate the association between hypothyroidism and the risk of developing POAG. Methods: A total of 50 participants were enrolled in this study, comprising 25 individuals with hypothyroidism and 25 age- and sex-matched controls without hypothyroidism. All participants underwent comprehensive ophthalmic examination, including intraocular pressure measurement, optic nerve head assessment, and visual field testing. Clinical data, including thyroid function tests, were collected from medical records. The association between hypothyroidism and POAG was analyzed using appropriate statistical methods, adjusting for potential confounders. Results: Among the 25 participants with hypothyroidism, 8 (32%) were diagnosed with POAG, whereas only 2 (8%) of the control group had POAG. The difference in the prevalence of POAG between the two groups was statistically significant (p < 0.05). After adjusting for age, sex, and other potential confounders, hypothyroidism was found to be independently associated with a significantly higher risk of developing POAG, with an odds ratio of 4.50 (95% confidence interval: 1.32-15.34, p = 0.017). Conclusion: This case-control study provides evidence of a significant association between hypothyroidism and the risk of developing POAG. These findings suggest that individuals with hypothyroidism may have an increased susceptibility to POAG, highlighting the importance of regular ophthalmic screening in this population. Further research is warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms linking hypothyroidism and POAG and to explore potential therapeutic interventions targeting this association. The evidence remains inconsistent regarding whether vitamin D deficiency (VDD) increases the risk of prediabetes. This study aimed to examine whether there is sex-specific association between VDD and impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in Henan. The data were sourced from the survey of chronic diseases and nutrition in Henan. Multinomial logistic regression models based on complex sampling design and weight were developed to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and confidence interval (95%CI) for measuring the association between VDD and IFG/IGT. The prevalence rate of IGT in men was 20.1% in the VDD group, significantly higher than that in the non-VDD group (10.5%), but no significant difference was observed in women between the VDD and non-VDD groups; there were no significant differences in IFG prevalence between the VDD and non-VDD groups in either men or women. It was found that the association between VDD and IGT was statistically significant in men. The adjusted OR (95%CI) of VDD was 1.99 (1.24–3.19) for IGT in men and 14.84 (4.14–53.20) for IGT in men having a family history of DM. Purpose: To investigate the association between age distribution and synchronous distant metastasis of papillary thyroid carcinoma. Method: Patients with PTC who were treated from January 2013 to December 2018 at a single institute in a cancer referral center in China were retrospectively reviewed. A logistic regression model with restricted cubic splines (RCS) was used to examine the association between age at diagnosis and synchronous distant metastasis. Results: A total of 111 patients (0.7%) were diagnosed with distant metastasis. The logistic regression model with RCS revealed a "U-shape" association between age and distant metastasis. The RCS curve suggested a U-shaped pattern. The multivariable regression analysis showed that patients in the age groups ≤21 years (OR 2.33, 95% CI 1.09–4.68, P = 0.022) and >55 years (OR 3.32, 95% CI 1.99–5.46, P < 0.001) had a significantly higher incidence of distant metastasis than patients in the age group of 22 to 55 years. Introduction: The constellation of pre and perinatal predictors are introduced as predictor for autism spectrum disorders (ASD), however, the information about the direction and strength of these predictors are lacking in Western, Iran. The current study aimed to determine the pre and perinatal predictors of ASD among children in this region. Methods: This case-control study was conducted in Hamadan, Western Iran during January to March 2022. The study included 100 children with ASD who referred to the autism center as case group. Hundred children without ASD from registration system of health service centers were selected as control group and were matched (1:1) to cases by age and place of residency. A structured questionnaire about pre and perinatal predictors of ASD was developed by an expert panel. The questionnaire was administered by interviewing the mothers of children. Results: Boy gender (OR: 3.51, 95% CI: 1.74–7.10, p-value < 0.001), small for gestational age (SGA) (3.92, 1.64–9.39, 0.002), maternal diabetes (3.51, 1.03–24.95, 0.04) and family history of mental disorders (3.64, 1.18–11.27, 0.04) were identified as significant predictors in a multivariable analysis. Conclusion: Our study emphasizes on the importance of screening and monitoring for ASD in the boys, those with history of SGA, from mothers with history of diabetes and with family history of mental disorders. Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is a worldwide zoonotic parasite that can infect almost warm-blood animals, including humans, which seriously affect the health of host. Cats are known to be the only definitive host of T. gondii and continuously excrete highly infectious oocysts. This parasite carried by the companion animals leads to a great public health risk. However, there is little information on epidemiology of T. gondii in urban cats in Kunming, Southwest China. In the present study, a total of 231 serum and fecal samples were collected in Kunming aera, and then seroprevalence of T. gondii IgG antibodies in serum and molecular investigation in feces were analyzed to elucidate T. gondii infection in urban cats. The results revealed that 168 of 231 cats (72.7%) were positive for T. gondii antibodies, and 1 of 74 cat feces (1.4%) also showed a positive PCR for T. gondii DNA. The positive fecal sample was sequenced and then phylogenetically analyzed, and the isolate of T. gondii in the present study was closely related to T. gondii strain CN. In addition, the food, water and age of cats were identified as the risk factor for seropositivity. Overall, our findings indicate the widespread occurrence of T. gondii infection in urban cats in Kunming, Southwest China and identify food, water and age are the risk factors associated with T. gondii infection, which can provide effective information for developing strategies to prevent and control this zoonosis. Idiopathic intracranial hypertension is a neurological condition characterized by a raised intracranial pressure and papilledema, leading to chronic headaches and visual disturbances. By recognizing modifiable risk factors and deploying evidence-based interventions, healthcare providers have the potential to mitigate the burden of the disease and improve patient outcomes. It is well known that the condition occurs in predominantly pre-menopausal females who live with obesity particularly in the context of recent weight gain. This review discusses what risk factors may contribute to the metabolic underpinnings of cerebrospinal fluid dysregulation. There are a number of disease associations that are important to screen for as they can alter management. There is emerging evidence to suggest that idiopathic intracranial hypertension is a systemic metabolic disease and it is unknown what are all the risk factors are that precipitate the condition. Targeting certain hardwired risk factors is unachievable. However, as recent weight gain has been identified as a predominant risk factor for the development of the disease and relapse, modification of body weight should be the primary aim of management. The purpose of this paper was to retrospectively assess the local factors that are likely to be associated with the risks for one-year dental implant loss. A retrospective study was designed and implemented. The sample consisted of patients who underwent an implant loss or removal caused by peri-implantitis or infection after prosthesis loading. The chi-squared test and generalised estimating equations (GEE) were used to explore the potential risk factors for one-year implant loss. A total of 279 patients with 287 failed implants were enrolled in this study. Immediate implant placement exhibited a 3.373 (95% CI: 1.652 to 6.886) significantly increased risk to experience one-year implant loss than early and late implant placement (p = 0.001). In addition, implants loaded during a healing period fewer than two months after implant placement were at 18.139 (95% CI: 8.925 to 36.866) significantly higher risk of one-year implant loss when compared with those that loaded within more than two months after implant placement (p < 0.001). Smokers were 1.866 (OR = 1.866,95% CI: 0.993 to 3.510) times as high risk for one-year implant loss as non-smokers, but there were no significant statistical differences (p = 0.053). Tooth extraction has been avoided in patients receiving antiresorptive agent (ARA) therapy. This study aimed to investigate dental findings associated with medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) development in patients. First, in patients treated with high-dose ARAs, the relationship between dental findings and MRONJ development was examined. Next, in patients with MRONJ undergoing surgery, the relationship between dental findings and MRONJ occurring at a site distant from the initial site was examined. MRONJ occurred in 13 of 172 patients (80 of 3725 teeth) during observation. Multiple tooth loss, periodontal ligament space enlargement, alveolar bone loss, periapical osteosclerosis, and local infection symptoms were associated with MRONJ development. Tooth extraction significantly reduced MRONJ development. Regarding other-site recurrence, new MRONJ developed at other sites in 54 of 357 patients with MRONJ (171 of 5038 teeth). Multiple tooth loss, apical lesions, periodontal ligament space enlargement, and periapical osteosclerosis were significantly associated with MRONJ development. In patients with malignant tumors, tooth extraction significantly reduced the subsequent incidence of MRONJ, while in patients with osteoporosis, there was no difference in the incidence of MRONJ between patients with and without tooth extraction. MRONJ was more likely to develop from teeth with local infections. Extraction of teeth with local infection in patients with malignancy may be more effective than tooth preservation in preventing MRONJ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Liver cirrhosis is associated with increased perioperative morbidity. Our study used the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score to assess the impact of cirrhosis severity on postoperative outcomes following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). A retrospective review identified 59 patients with liver cirrhosis who underwent primary TKA at a large, urban, academic center from January 2013 to August 2022. Cirrhosis was categorized as mild (MELD < 10; n = 47) or moderate-severe (MELD ≥ 10; n = 12). Modified Clavien-Dindo classification was used to grade complications, where grade 2+ denoted significant intervention. Hospital length of stay, nonhome discharge, and mortality were collected. A 1:1 propensity matching was used to control for demographics and selected comorbidities. Moderate-severe cirrhosis was associated with significantly higher rates of intrahospital overall (58.33 versus 16.67%, P =.036) complications, 30-day overall complications (75 versus 33.33%, P =.042), and 90-day overall complications (75 versus 33.33%, P =.042) when compared to matched mild cirrhosis patients. Compared to matched noncirrhotic controls, mild cirrhosis patients had no significant increase in complication rate or other outcomes (P >.05). Patients with moderate-severe liver cirrhosis are at risk of short-term complications following primary TKA. Patients with mild cirrhosis have comparable outcomes to matched noncirrhotic patients. Background: Although it is thought that prostatitis or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is related to prostate cancer (PCa), the underlying causal effects of these diseases are unclear. Methods: We assessed the causal relationship between prostatitis or BPH and PCa using a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. The data utilized in this study were sourced from genome-wide association study. The association of genetic variants from cohorts of prostatitis or BPH and PCa patients was determined using inverse-variance weighted and MR Egger regression techniques. The direction of chance was determined using independent genetic variants with genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10–6). The accuracy of the results was confirmed using sensitivity analyses. Results: MR analysis showed that BPH had a significant causal effect on PCa (Odds Ratio = 1.209, 95% Confidence Interval: 0.098–0.281, P = 5.079 × 10− 5) while prostatitis had no significant causal effect on PCa (P > 0.05). Additionally, the pleiotropic test and leave-one-out analysis showed the two-sample MR analyses were valid and reliable. Conclusions: This MR study supports that BPH has a positive causal effect on PCa, while genetically predicted prostatitis has no causal effect on PCa. BACKGROUND: The number of hip fracture patients with dementia is increasing with an aging population, posing challenges for surgical treatment. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of dementia on postoperative complications in older patients with hip fractures. METHODS: Patients aged over 60 years old with hip fractures from 2000 to 2019 at Chinese PLA General Hospital were included. Dementia patients with a preexisting diagnosis of dementia at admission were identified. Each dementia patient was matched, for age ± 5 years, gender, and fracture type with 10 non-dementia patients. The differences in postoperative complications were compared between the two groups, including pneumonia, respiratory failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, urinary tract infection, surgical site infection, deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, angina pectoris, arrhythmia, heart failure, myocardial infarction, stroke, and death. The impact of dementia on major complications was evaluated using multivariate conditional logistic regression. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: A total of 2887 patients were included, of whom 125 (4.3%) were dementia patients and matched with 1 243 non-dementia patients. The average age of dementia patients was (80.6±7.4) years; 64.8% were female; 53.6% were intertrochanteric fractures, and 46.4% were femoral neck fractures. Major complications occurred in 25 (20.0%) patients with dementia and 123 (9.9%) patients without dementia (P < 0.01). The risk of major complications was 200.0 per 1 000 persons (95%CI, 139.3-278.6) in dementia patients and 99.0 per 1 000 persons (95%CI, 83.6-116.9) in non-dementia patients. Multivariate conditional logistic regression showed that a 2-fold risk of major postoperative complications after hip fracture surgery was found in dementia patients than in those without dementia (adjusted OR, 2.11; 95%CI, 1.08-4.10). The results show that dementia is an independent risk factor for postoperative complications in elderly patients with hip fractures. Appropriate preoperative risk assessment and corresponding preventive and therapeutic measures should be given to this vulnerable population to mitigate postoperative complications.
