Road weather conditions are closed-related to the transportation safety and traffic capacity. With the development of road surveillance systems, weather conditions could be recognized from video. However, it is hard to be detected by machine. To address it, a deeply supervised convolution neural network (DS-CNN) is designed and trained on a self-established dataset. The traffic image dataset includes five groups labeled with “sunny”, “overcast”, “rainy”, “snowy” and “foggy”. Each group has manually labeled and selected more than 2500 images. The DS-CNN, can achieve the precision rate of 0.9681 and the recall rate of 0.9681. This practical weather detection method has been built in the surveillance system covers five freeways. The experimental result used in practice shows much worse detection results at first with disturbance of difference scenarios, worn camera, transmission failure and so on. With further improvement of DS-CNN, we found that it was much more effective than hand-crafted features in this task, and a deeper neural architecture could derive more powerful features. Moreover, the results show that dense weather information has more details in a small scale. In order to fast report the regional weather detection result, a designed visualization method is also proposed in spatiotemporal dimension to fuse with currently-used system. The high accuracy and fast detection speed with friendly visualization would lead to more precise traffic management and prompt the road weather traffic control to more intelligence levels.

It is considered that the road condition in the winter is one of the significant issues for the safety driving by tourists or residents. However, there are many difficulties of the V2V networks such as the transmission range of wireless networks and the noises from the automobilefs bodies. Thus, this paper introduces the Adaptive Array Antenna (AAA) controls for the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) networks based the Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) in the road surveillance system. In the proposed system, the vehicles equip the AAA control systems with IEEE802.11a/b/g based the DTN, and the wireless directions are controlled by the visual recognitions with Kalman filter algorithm to make the longer and stable wireless connections for the efficiency of the DTN. The porotype system is introduced in this paper, and the results are discussed for the future studies.

The rapid growth of the ITS (intelligent transport system) development requires us to realize new kinds of applications, such as the winter road surveillance system. However, it is still necessary to consider the network difficulty areas for LTE (long-term evolution) or 3G transmissions when one visits sightseeing spots such as ski resorts or spas in mountain areas. Therefore, this paper proposes a winter road surveillance system in the local area based on vehicular delay-tolerant networks. The adaptive array antenna controlled by image recognition with the Kalman filter algorithm is proposed as well to the system in order to realize higher delivery rates. The implementations of the prototype system are presented in this paper as well, and the effectivity of the radio transmission in the prototype system is realized by vehicular image recognition methods and the asynchronous voltage controls for antenna elements for the rapid directional controls of the radio transmission. The experimental results showed that the radio directional controls by the prototype system for the target vehicle can proceed within one second, and that the simulation with the GIS (geographic information system) map pointed out the delivery rates of the proposed method—which are better than those of the epidemic DTN (delay-tolerant networking) routing by the nondirectional antenna. The experiments of the proposed methods indicate a higher efficiency of the data transmissions—even in the mountain area. Furthermore, future research subjects are discussed in this paper.
