Abstract

Optimal control plays a crucial role in numerous mechanical and robotic applications. Broadly, optimal control methods are divided into direct methods (which optimize trajectories directly via discretization) and indirect methods (which transform optimality conditions into equations that guarantee optimal trajectories). While direct methods could mask geometric insights into system dynamics due to discretization, indirect methods offer a deeper understanding of the system's geometry. In this paper, we propose a geometric framework for understanding optimal control in mechanical systems, focusing on the combined effects of inertia, drag, and gravitational forces. By modeling mechanical systems as configuration manifolds equipped with kinetic and drag metrics, alongside a potential field, we explore how these factors influence trajectory optimization. We derive optimal control equations incorporating these effects and apply them to two-link and UR5 robotic manipulators, demonstrating how manifold curvature and resistive forces shape optimal trajectories. 2. Geometric Design and Gait Co-Optimization for Soft Continuum Robots Swimming at Low and High Reynolds Numbers

Abstract

Recent advancements in soft actuators have enabled soft continuum swimming robots to achieve higher efficiency and more closely mimic the behaviors of real marine animals. However, optimizing the design and control of these soft continuum robots remains a significant challenge. In this paper, we present a practical framework for the co-optimization of the design and control of soft continuum robots, approached from a geometric locomotion analysis perspective. This framework is based on the principles of geometric mechanics, accounting for swimming at both low and high Reynolds numbers. By generalizing geometric principles to continuum bodies, we achieve efficient geometric variational co-optimization of designs and gaits across different power consumption metrics and swimming environments. The resulting optimal designs and gaits exhibit greater efficiencies at both low and high Reynolds numbers compared to three-link or serpenoid swimmers with the same degrees of freedom, approaching or even surpassing the efficiencies of infinitely flexible swimmers and those with higher degrees of freedom., Comment: 6 pages + references, 6 figures, supplementary video: https://youtu.be/eAmjk_dobHk

Abstract

Robotic locomotion often relies on sequenced gaits to efficiently convert control input into desired motion. Despite extensive studies on gait optimization, achieving smooth and efficient gait transitions remains challenging. In this paper, we propose a general solver based on geometric optimal control methods, leveraging insights from previous works on gait efficiency. Building upon our previous work, we express the effort to execute the trajectory as distinct geometric objects, transforming the optimization problems into boundary value problems. To validate our approach, we generate gait transition trajectories for three-link swimmers across various fluid environments. 13. Optimal Control of Robotic Systems and Biased Riemannian Splines

Abstract

In this paper, we study mechanical optimal control problems on a given Riemannian manifold $(Q,g)$ in which the cost is defined by a general cometric $\tilde{g}$. This investigation is motivated by our studies in robotics, in which we observed that the mathematically natural choice of cometric $\tilde{g} = g^{*}$ -- the dual of $g$ -- does not always capture the true cost of the motion. We then, first, discuss how to encode the system's torque-based actuators configuration into a cometric $\tilde{g}$. Second, we provide and prove our main theorem, which characterizes the optimal solutions of the problem associated to general triples $(Q, g, \tilde{g})$ in terms of a 4th order differential equation. We also identify a tensor appearing in this equation as the geometric source of "biasing" of the solutions away from ordinary Riemannian splines and geodesics for $(Q, g)$. Finally, we provide illustrative examples and practical demonstration of the biased splines as providing the true optimizers in a concrete robotics system.

14. Towards Geometric Motion Planning for High-Dimensional Systems: Gait-Based Coordinate Optimization and Local Metrics

Abstract

Geometric motion planning offers effective and interpretable gait analysis and optimization tools for locomoting systems. However, due to the curse of dimensionality in coordinate optimization, a key component of geometric motion planning, it is almost infeasible to apply current geometric motion planning to high-dimensional systems. In this paper, we propose a gait-based coordinate optimization method that overcomes the curse of dimensionality. We also identify a unified geometric representation of locomotion by generalizing various nonholonomic constraints into local metrics. By combining these two approaches, we take a step towards geometric motion planning for high-dimensional systems. We test our method in two classes of high-dimensional systems - low Reynolds number swimmers and free-falling Cassie - with up to 11-dimensional shape variables. The resulting optimal gait in the high-dimensional system shows better efficiency compared to that of the reduced-order model. 15. Geometric Gait Optimization for Inertia-Dominated Systems With Nonzero Net Momentum

Abstract

Inertia-dominated mechanical systems can achieve net displacement by 1) periodically changing their shape (known as kinematic gait) and 2) adjusting their inertia distribution to utilize the existing nonzero net momentum (known as momentum gait). Therefore, finding the gait that most effectively utilizes the two types of locomotion in terms of the magnitude of the net momentum is a significant topic in the study of locomotion. For kinematic locomotion with zero net momentum, the geometry of optimal gaits is expressed as the equilibria of system constraint curvature flux through the surface bounded by the gait, and the cost associated with executing the gait in the metric space. In this paper, we identify the geometry of optimal gaits with nonzero net momentum effects by lifting the gait description to a time-parameterized curve in shape-time space. We also propose the variational gait optimization algorithm corresponding to the lifted geometric structure, and identify two distinct patterns in the optimal motion, determined by whether or not the kinematic and momentum gaits are concentric. The examples of systems with and without fluid-added mass demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can efficiently solve forward and turning locomotion gaits in the presence of nonzero net momentum. 17. Geometrically Modulable Gait Design for Quadrupeds

Abstract

Miniature-legged robots are constrained by their onboard computation and control, thus motivating the need for simple, first-principles-based geometric models that connect \emph{periodic actuation or gaits} (a universal robot control paradigm) to the induced average locomotion. In this paper, we develop a \emph{modulable two-beat gait design framework} for sprawled planar quadrupedal systems under the no-slip using tools from geometric mechanics. We reduce standard two-beat gaits into unique subgaits in mutually exclusive shape subspaces. Subgaits are characterized by a locomotive stance phase when limbs are in ground contact and a non-locomotive, instantaneous swing phase where the limbs are reset without contact. During the stance phase, the contacting limbs form a four-bar mechanism. To analyze the ensuing locomotion, we develop the following tools: (a) a vector field to generate nonslip actuation, (b) the kinematics of a four-bar mechanism as a local connection, and (c) stratified panels that combine the kinematics and constrained actuation to encode the net change in the system's position generated by a stance-swing subgait cycle. Decoupled subgaits are then designed independently using flows on the shape-change basis and are combined with appropriate phasing to produce a two-beat gait. Further, we introduce ``scaling" and ``sliding" control inputs to continuously modulate the global trajectories of the quadrupedal system in gait time through which we demonstrate cycle-average speed, direction, and steering control using the control inputs. Thus, this framework has the potential to create uncomplicated open-loop gait plans or gain schedules for robots with limited resources, bringing them closer to achieving autonomous control., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Discrete and periodic contact switching is a key characteristic of steady-state legged locomotion. This paper introduces a framework for modeling and analyzing this contact-switching behavior through the framework of geometric mechanics on a toy robot model that can make continuous limb swings and discrete contact switches. The kinematics of this model form a hybrid shape-space and by extending the generalized Stokes' theorem to compute discrete curvature functions called \textit{stratified panels}, we determine average locomotion generated by gaits spanning multiple contact modes. 19. HISSbot: Sidewinding with a Soft Snake Robot

Abstract

Snake robots are characterized by their ability to navigate through small spaces and loose terrain by utilizing efficient cyclic forms of locomotion. Soft snake robots are a subset of these robots which utilize soft, compliant actuators to produce movement. Prior work on soft snake robots has primarily focused on planar gaits, such as undulation. More efficient spatial gaits, such as sidewinding, are unexplored gaits for soft snake robots. We propose a novel means of constructing a soft snake robot capable of sidewinding, and introduce the Helical Inflating Soft Snake Robot (HISSbot). We validate this actuation through the physical HISSbot, and demonstrate its ability to sidewind across various surfaces. 20. Linear Kinematics for General Constant Curvature and Torsion Manipulators

Abstract

We present a novel general model that unifies the kinematics of constant curvature and constant twist continuum manipulators. Combining this kinematics with energy-based physics, we derive a linear mapping from actuator configuration to manipulator deformation that is analogous to traditional robot forward kinematics. Our model generalizes across manipulators with different sizes, types of bending, and types of actuators, without the need for parameter re-fitting. The combination of generality and linearity makes the model useful for control and planning algorithms. 21. Estimating Longitudinal Causal Effects with Unobserved Noncompliance Using a Semi-Parametric G-computation Algorithm

Abstract

Participant noncompliance, in which participants do not follow their assigned treatment protocol, often obscures the causal relationship between treatment and treatment effect in randomized trials. In the longitudinal setting, the G-computation algorithm can adjust for confounding to estimate causal effects. Typically, G-computation assumes that both 1) compliance is observed; and 2) the densities of the confounders can be correctly specified. We aim to develop a G-computation estimator in the setting where both assumptions are violated. For 1), in place of unobserved compliance, we substitute in probability weights derived from modeling a biomarker associated with compliance. For 2), we fit semiparametric models using predictive mean matching. Specifically, we parametrically specify only the conditional mean of the confounders, and then use predictive mean matching to randomly generate confounder data for G-computation. In both the simulation and application, we compare multiple causal estimators already established in the literature with those derived from our method. For the simulation, we generated data across different sample sizes and levels of confounding. For the application, we apply our method to a trial that sought to evaluate the effect of cigarettes with low nicotine on cigarette consumption (Center for the Evaluation of Nicotine in Cigarettes Project 2 - CENIC-P2).

Abstract

BackgroundPatients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who have tumor protein p53 (TP53) mutations or a complex karyotype have a poor prognosis, and hypomethylating agents are often used. The authors evaluated the efficacy of entospletinib, an oral inhibitor of spleen tyrosine kinase, combined with decitabine in this patient population.MethodsThis was a multicenter, open-label, phase 2 substudy of the Beat AML Master Trial (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT03013998) using a Simon two-stage design. Eligible patients aged 60 years or older who had newly diagnosed AML with mutations in TP53 with or without a complex karyotype (cohort A; n = 45) or had a complex karyotype without TP53 mutation (cohort B; n = 13) received entospletinib 400 mg twice daily with decitabine 20 mg/m2 on days 1-10 every 28 days for up to three induction cycles, followed by up to 11 consolidation cycles, in which decitabine was reduced to days 1-5. Entospletinib maintenance was given for up to 2 years. The primary end point was complete remission (CR) and CR with hematologic improvement by up to six cycles of therapy.ResultsThe composite CR rates for cohorts A and B were 13.3% (95% confidence interval, 5.1%-26.8%) and 30.8% (95% confidence interval, 9.1%-61.4%), respectively. The median duration of response was 7.6 and 8.2 months, respectively, and the median overall survival was 6.5 and 11.5 months, respectively. The study was stopped because the futility boundary was crossed in both cohorts.ConclusionsThe combination of entospletinib and decitabine demonstrated activity and was acceptably tolerated in this patient population; however, the CR rates were low, and overall survival was short. Novel treatment strategies for older patients with TP53 mutations and complex karyotype remain an urgent need.

Abstract

The robotic locomotion community is interested in optimal gaits for control. Based on the optimization criterion, however, there could be a number of possible optimal gaits. For example, the optimal gait for maximizing displacement with respect to cost is quite different from the maximum displacement optimal gait. Beyond these two general optimal gaits, we believe that the optimal gait should deal with various situations for high-resolution of motion planning, e.g., steering the robot or moving in "baby steps." As the step size or steering ratio increases or decreases, the optimal gaits will slightly vary by the geometric relationship and they will form the families of gaits. In this paper, we explored the geometrical framework across these optimal gaits having different step sizes in the family via the Lagrange multiplier method. Based on the structure, we suggest an optimal locus generator that solves all related optimal gaits in the family instead of optimizing each gait respectively. By applying the optimal locus generator to two simplified swimmers in drag-dominated environments, we verify the behavior of the optimal locus generator., Comment: 6 pages

27. Improving the heifer rearing efficiency of fully-housed dairy systems in the UK

Abstract

Whole-farm feed efficiency (WFFE) is a novel metric to measure farm performance which accounts for the costs of all animals in a dairy system, including herd replacements, dry cows, and bulls. However, our understanding of current heifer rearing practices in the UK and how they may affect WFFE is limited. This PhD thesis broadly aimed to assess the effect of factors relating to rearing herd replacements which are associated with WFFE. Using the University of Nottingham's Centre for Dairy Science Innovation as a representative of a high-yielding (mean annual milk yield 12,780 L/cow), all-year-round system, data from Holstein-Friesian heifers born between 2007 and 2018 were used to analyse age and live weight (LW) at first calving and how they, one; are affected by calf health, two; influence first lactation performance and three; impact longevity and lifetime performance. Age at first calving (AFC) is recognised as a key performance indicator in the dairy industry, but the proportion of systems achieving the 730 day (24 month) target has remained low. In study one, mean age and maturity at first calving for the herd met industry targets but only 10% of heifers met both targets. Studies two, three and four demonstrated how rearing performance and AFC are impacted by disease, growth rate and fertility. Study two found four in ten calves contracted a gastrointestinal enteric disorder (GED) for two days between 10 and 15 days of age on average. In the first four weeks of life GED reduced milk replacer intake by 1.0 L/d (p=0.001) and daily LW gain (DLWG) by 0.14 kg/d (p=0.007) and decreased weaning LW by 10% (p<0.001). Reduced milk replacer intake and greater unrewarded visits to the automatic calf feeder were associated with GED (p<0.05) and have the potential to be developed into automated tools for early indication of disease. In study three, bovine respiratory disease (BRD) delayed AFC by 41 days (p<0.001), increasing estimated rearing costs by £708 per heifer (39%). Study four found that heifers which took more than 50 days after first service to be diagnosed pregnant had 2.4% less maturity at first service (p<0.001), took 18 days longer to conceive during first lactation (p=0.021), were 8.5% less likely to calve a second time (p=0.043) and spent 156 fewer days in milk over their lifetime (p<0.001). Study five concluded that heifers must enter the milking herd with sufficient maturity to achieve a high dry matter intake and milk yield during first lactation, but factors which increase feeding and resting time of heifers can further improve first lactation performance. Lastly, in study six, heifers calving at 700 days (23 months) conceived 22 days earlier in their first lactation (p=0.034), repaid their rearing costs 254 days sooner (p<0.001) and spent an additional 8.2% of their life lactating (p=0.003). In summary, the most efficient heifers in this herd were those that calved at 700 days with sufficient maturity and were fertile. This can be achieved by investing adequate resources into rearing heifers at target growth rates and reducing disease incidence. Costs associated with improved heifer rearing will be returned by increasing lifetime productivity of individual cows. Increasing the proportion of heifers achieving rearing targets will increase heifer rearing efficiency and indirectly improve WFFE of the herd.

Abstract

In this work, we propose a method to generate reduced-order model reference trajectories for general classes of highly dynamic maneuvers for bipedal robots for use in sim-to-real reinforcement learning. Our approach is to utilize a single rigid-body model (SRBM) to optimize libraries of trajectories offline to be used as expert references in the reward function of a learned policy. This method translates the model's dynamically rich rotational and translational behaviour to a full-order robot model and successfully transfers to real hardware. The SRBM's simplicity allows for fast iteration and refinement of behaviors, while the robustness of learning-based controllers allows for highly dynamic motions to be transferred to hardware. % Within this work we introduce a set of transferability constraints that amend the SRBM dynamics to actual bipedal robot hardware, our framework for creating optimal trajectories for dynamic stepping, turning maneuvers and jumps as well as our approach to integrating reference trajectories to a reinforcement learning policy. Abstract

The complex dynamics of agile robotic legged locomotion requires motion planning to intelligently adjust footstep locations. Often, bipedal footstep and motion planning use mathematically simple models such as the linear inverted pendulum, instead of dynamically-rich models that do not have closed-form solutions. We propose a real-time optimization method to plan for dynamical models that do not have closed form solutions and experience irrecoverable failure. Our method uses a data-driven approximation of the step-to-step dynamics and of a failure margin function. This failure margin function is an oriented distance function in state-action space where it describes the signed distance to success or failure. The motion planning problem is formed as a nonlinear program with constraints that enforce the approximated forward dynamics and the validity of state-action pairs. For illustration, this method is applied to create a planner for an actuated spring-loaded inverted pendulum model. In an ablation study, the failure margin constraints decreased the number of invalid solutions by between 24 and 47 percentage points across different objectives and horizon lengths. Abstract

Water is essential for survival, but one in three individuals worldwide (2.2 billion people) lacks access to safe drinking water. Water intake requirements largely reflect water turnover (WT), the water used by the body each day. We investigated the determinants of human WT in 5604 people from the ages of 8 days to 96 years from 23 countries using isotope-tracking (2H) methods. Age, body size, and composition were significantly associated with WT, as were physical activity, athletic status, pregnancy, socioeconomic status, and environmental characteristics (latitude, altitude, air temperature, and humidity). People who lived in countries with a low human development index (HDI) had higher WT than people in high-HDI countries. On the basis of this extensive dataset, we provide equations to predict human WT in relation to anthropometric, economic, and environmental factors.

Abstract

In mammals, trait variation is often reported to be greater among males than females. However, to date, mainly only morphological traits have been studied. Energy expenditure represents the metabolic costs of multiple physical, physiological, and behavioral traits. Energy expenditure could exhibit particularly high greater male variation through a cumulative effect if those traits mostly exhibit greater male variation, or a lack of greater male variation if many of them do not. Sex differences in energy expenditure variation have been little explored. We analyzed a large database on energy expenditure in adult humans (1494 males and 3108 females) to investigate whether humans have evolved sex differences in the degree of interindividual variation in energy expenditure. We found that, even when statistically comparing males and females of the same age, height, and body composition, there is much more variation in total, activity, and basal energy expenditure among males. However, with aging, variation in total energy expenditure decreases, and because this happens more rapidly in males, the magnitude of greater male variation, though still large, is attenuated in older age groups. Considerably greater male variation in both total and activity energy expenditure could be explained by greater male variation in levels of daily activity. The considerably greater male variation in basal energy expenditure is remarkable and may be explained, at least in part, by greater male variation in the size of energy-demanding organs. If energy expenditure is a trait that is of indirect interest to females when choosing a sexual partner, this would suggest that energy expenditure is under sexual selection. However, we present a novel energetics model demonstrating that it is also possible that females have been under stabilizing selection pressure for an intermediate basal energy expenditure to maximize energy available for reproduction.

Abstract

Locomotion requires that an animal or robot be able to move itself forward farther than it moves backward in each gait cycle (formally, that it be able to break the symmetry of its interactions with the world). Previous work has established that a difference between lateral and longitudinal drag provides sufficient conditions for locomotion to be possible. The geometric mechanics community has used this principle to build a geometric framework for describing the effectiveness and efficiency of undulatory locomotion. Researchers in biology and robotics have observed that structures such as snake scales additionally provide a difference between forward and backward longitudinal drag. As yet, however, the impact of scales on the geometric features relevant to locomotion effectiveness and efficiency have not yet been explored. We present a geometric model for a single-joint undulating system with scales and identify the features needed to understand its motion. Mathematically, the scales can be treated as inducing a "Finsler metric" on the configuration space, and this paper lays the groundwork for further research into application of such Finsler metrics to robotic locomotion., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

BackgroundThe use of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) may interact with genetic variants to influence colorectal cancer (CRC) risk.MethodsWe conducted a genome-wide, gene-environment interaction between single nucleotide polymorphisms and the use of any MHT, estrogen only, and combined estrogen-progestogen therapy with CRC risk, among 28 486 postmenopausal women (11 519 CRC patients and 16 967 participants without CRC) from 38 studies, using logistic regression, 2-step method, and 2- or 3-degree-of-freedom joint test. A set-based score test was applied for rare genetic variants.ResultsThe use of any MHT, estrogen only and estrogen-progestogen were associated with a reduced CRC risk (odds ratio [OR] = 0.71, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.64 to 0.78; OR = 0.65, 95% CI = 0.53 to 0.79; and OR = 0.73, 95% CI = 0.59 to 0.90, respectively). The 2-step method identified a statistically significant interaction between a GRIN2B variant rs117868593 and MHT use, whereby MHT-associated CRC risk was statistically significantly reduced in women with the GG genotype (OR = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.64 to 0.72) but not within strata of GC or CC genotypes. Lower ambient temperature (Ta) requires greater energy expenditure to sustain body temperature. However, effects of Ta on human energetics may be buffered by environmental modification and behavioral compensation. Abstract

Obesity and obesity-related metabolic disorders, such as diabetes and chronic inflammation, have been positively associated both with postmenopausal breast cancer and with resting energy expenditure (REE). However, there is limited epidemiologic evidence on the associations between REE and risk of postmenopausal breast cancer. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards models to examine the association between predicted REE (calculated using the Ikeda, Livingston, and Mifflin equations) and risk of postmenopausal breast cancer overall and by subtypes, and by level of body fat) among 137,283 postmenopausal women in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). All predicted REEs were positively associated with risk of invasive breast cancer [HRq5 vs. q1 = 1.69; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.57-1.81; HR = 1.69; 95% CI, 1.57-1.82; and HR = 1.68; 95% CI, 1.56-1.80 for Ikeda, Livingston, and Mifflin, respectively]. These positive associations were observed irrespective of the hormone receptor subtype, grade, and stage of the tumors, but were most pronounced for estrogen receptor-positive/progesterone receptor-positive tumors. After additional adjustment for body mass index (BMI), the associations were mostly attenuated and remained statistically significant for most of the outcomes. We also observed an interaction between the predicted REEs and BMI, with the associations being somewhat stronger among normal weight and overweight women than among obese women (Pinteractions < 0.05). Our findings indicate that relatively high REE is associated with increased risk of invasive breast cancer among postmenopausal women (particularly for the obesity-related tumor subtypes), irrespective of the equation used. Further studies using more objective measures of REE are, however, needed to confirm our findings.Prevention relevanceThis study showed that higher resting energy expenditure (REE) was associated with higher postmenopausal breast cancer risk. REE provides energy to support cancer-associated disorders such as obesity and inflammation. Thus, studies on its association with breast cancer can help to improve our understanding of the pathophysiology of breast cancer.

Abstract

Porosity variations in tubular scaffolds are critical to reproducible, sophisticated applications of electrospun fibers in biomedicine. Established laser micrometry techniques produced ~14,000 datapoints enabling thickness and porosity plots versus both the azimuthal (Phi) and axial (Z) directions following cylindrical mandrel deposition. These 3D datasets could then be "unrolled" into "maps" revealing variations in thickness and porosity versus 0, -5, and -15 kV collector bias. As bias increases, thinner, more "focused" depositions occur. Simultaneous decreases in net porosity versus bias (91.1% 0kV > 83.4% -5kV > 80.2% -15 kV) are sensible, but significant changes in the distribution were unexpected. Surprisingly, at 0 kV, extensive mesoscale surface roughness is evident. Optical profilometry revealed unique features ~1600-420 mum in size, standing ~210 mum above the surrounding surface. These shrink to only ~440-150 mum in size and ~30 mum higher at -5 kV bias and disappear entirely at -15 kV. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) resolved these into novel, localized "domains" containing tightly aligned fibers oriented parallel to the mandrel axis. Unexpectedly, we also observed substantial orientation along the mandrel axis. By modifying classical bending instability models to incorporate cylindrical electric fields, simulation revealed that horizontal components in the modified electric field alter bending loop shape, causing the observed alignment. Abstract

Low total energy expenditure (TEE, MJ/d) has been a hypothesized risk factor for weight gain, but repeatability of TEE, a critical variable in longitudinal studies of energy balance, is understudied. We examine repeated doubly labeled water (DLW) measurements of TEE in 348 adults and 47 children from the IAEA DLW Database (mean ± SD time interval: 1.9 ± 2.9 y) to assess repeatability of TEE, and to examine if TEE adjusted for age, sex, fat-free mass, and fat mass is associated with changes in weight or body composition. Here, we report that repeatability of TEE is high for adults, but not children. Bivariate Bayesian mixed models show no among or within-individual correlation between body composition (fat mass or percentage) and unadjusted TEE in adults. For adults aged 20-60 y (N = 267; time interval: 7.4 ± 12.2 weeks), increases in adjusted TEE are associated with weight gain but not with changes in body composition; results are similar for subjects with intervals >4 weeks (N = 53; 29.1 ± 12.8 weeks). This suggests low TEE is not a risk factor for, and high TEE is not protective against, weight or body fat gain over the time intervals tested.
