Okra is a vegetable that stands out for its low production cost, high yield, high nutritional and value and socioeconomic importance in income generation, especially in family farming. In this context, the present study evaluated the physiology, production and water use efficiency of okra under irrigation with saline water and exogenous application of hydrogen peroxide. The treatments were distributed in a randomized block design, in a 5 × 3 factorial arrangement, with five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water - ECw (0.3; 1.3; 2.3; 3.3 and 4.3 dS m-1) and three concentrations of hydrogen peroxide - H2O2 (0, 25 and 50 µM), with five replicates, totaling 75 plants. Irrigation with ECw above 0.3 dS m-1 negatively affected stomatal conductance, transpiration, number of fruits, total production and water use efficiency of okra cv. Clemson Americano 80. Hydrogen peroxide at concentration of 22 µM mitigated the effects of salt stress on CO2 assimilation rate, number of fruits, average fruit weight and total production of okra cv. Clemson Americano 80. Water use efficiency is favored by H2O2 application at concentration of 12 µM, especially in plants irrigated with ECw of 0.3 dS m-1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Brazil semi-arid regions, excess of soluble salts is a limiting factor for the success of agricultural crops. An adequate supply of nutrients can cause positive responses in plant species under salt stress. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of nitrogen and potassium on the morphophysiology of passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) seedlings subjected to saline stress. The design was a randomized blocks design, with treatments generated by the Box Central Composite Design matrix. Five electrical conductivities of irrigation water (ECw = 0.5, 0.98, 2.15, 3.32, and 3.80 dS m-1), five doses of nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) (0.0, 29.08, 100.0, 170.92, and 200.0%), in four replications. The combination of 200% NK stimulated the synthesis of chlorophyll a, and total chlorophyll under low salinity conditions (0.5 dS m-1). The chlorophyll a/b ratio was higher at ECw of 3.8 dS m-1 and under a concentration of 20.23% NK. The increase in water salinity from of 0.5 dS m-1 caused deleterious effects on the growth of passion fruit seedlings. The doses of NK between 100% and 120% improved the absolute growth rates of plant height and stem diameter, chlorophyll b, aerial dry matter, and total dry matter. The 200% dose of NK improved the leaf mass ratio. The combination of N and K applied foliar proved to be efficient in reducing the effects of salinity on the synthesis of photosynthetic pigments, providing better growth conditions for yellow passion fruit seedlings. Salt stress is one of the main abiotic stresses that negatively affect agricultural production and sustainable development worldwide. Thus, there is a search for management strategies to reduce the deleterious effects of salts on plants. In view of the above, the objective was to evaluate the effects of irrigation with brackish water and different forms of organomineral fertilization on the agronomic performance of the peanut crop. The study was conducted in a greenhouse in a completely randomized design (5 × 2 factorial scheme) with five forms of fertilization (F1 = 100% mineral; F2 = 100% bovine biofertilizer; F3 = 100% vegetal ash; F4 = 50% mineral + 50% bovine biofertilizer; and F5 = 50% mineral + 50% vegetal ash), two levels of electrical conductivity of the irrigation water (ECw) (1.0 and 5.0 dS m-1), and five replicates. The fertilization composed only by vegetable ash 100% associated with irrigation water with higher concentration of salts (5.0 dS m-1) caused negative effects on the number of pods, pod mass, pod shell dry mass and yield. Although brackish water (5.0 dS m-1) reduces peanut yield components and productivity, fertilization made with 100% biofertilizer provided the highest productivity among all treatments. O efeito da solução de Cloreto de potássio na germinação de sementes de milheto é um tema de estudo importante devido à influência do potássio no crescimento e desenvolvimento das plantas. O objetivo do presente trabalho é investigar o efeito de diferentes doses da solução de KCl na germinação de sementes de milheto. O delineamento utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado, com 5 tratamentos e quatro repetições, sendo 0, 25, 50 75 e 100 ml ha-1 respectivamente. Foi utilizado 300 g do Cloreto potássio, sendo feita a diluição em 1 litro de água. As concentrações variadas da solução de KCl exerceram impactos significativos na germinação de sementes de milheto, bem como na altura das plantas e no comprimento das raízes. As concentrações mais elevadas de KCl, como 75 ml ha-1 e 100 ml ha-1, mostraram-se inibitórias, com ausência total de germinação. A dosagem de 25 ml ha-1 exibiu efeitos adversos na germinação e no desenvolvimento das plantas.

A água é o bem mais valioso da terra; na agricultura, sua qualidade afeta diretamente o desenvolvimento das espécies e pode ocasionar a degradação do solo. Sendo assim, este trabalho objetivou avaliar os parâmetros físico-químicos de água subterrânea utilizada para agricultura familiar no brejo paraibano. Foram coletadas amostras de água de dois poços tubulares profundos não jorrantes, com 40 m e 52 m de profundidade, em uma propriedade rural do município de Areia-PB, totalizando seis amostras, no período de novembro de 2017 a janeiro de 2018. As amostras foram encaminhadas para o Laboratório de Química Analítica da Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB), Campus II, Areia, Paraíba. Foram analisadas as seguintes variáveis: alcalinidade total; dureza total; pH; Ca, Na, K e Mg; turbidez; condutividade elétrica; e Razão de Absorção de Sódio (RAS). Com base nos resultados dos parâmetros físico-químicos, as águas avaliadas são adequadas para o uso na agricultura irrigada, considerando as legislações vigentes. Quanto ao risco de salinização, as amostras foram classificadas em C1 (baixo)e C2 (médio), e quanto ao risco de sodificação, essas foram classificadas em águas do tipo S2 (médio)e S3 (alto). Embora possam ser utilizadas para irrigação, é importante acompanhar as concentrações de sódio, cálcio e magnésio nessas águas.

A condutividade elétrica e frequência de aplicação na fertirrigação de orquídeas, não estão estabelecidas. O objetivo foi avaliar a influência da condutividade elétrica e das frequências de aplicação de fertilizantes, no crescimento e nutrição de Brassia verrucosa. Mudas de Brassia verrucosa foram cultivadas por 18 meses. As fertilizações tiveram como fonte de nitrogênio (N), fósforo (P) e potássio (K): ureia, cloreto de potássio e fosfato monoamônico diluídos em três concentrações: C1 (0,5:0,5:0,5; g L-1), C2 (1:1:1; g L-1) e C3 (2:2:2; g L-1). As condutividades elétricas apresentaram 1,25, 2,5 e 4,7 mS cm-1, respectivamente. Foram adotadas três frequências de aplicação: mensal (F1), quinzenal (F2) e semanal (F3). Plantas somente irrigadas foram o controle. O delineamento foi inteiramente casualizado com 10 repetições, em esquema fatorial 3x3+1. Os parâmetros fotométricos e teores de macronutrientes na parte aérea, foram submetidos a ANOVA e teste Tukey a 5% de significância. A condutividade das soluções resultou em maiores incrementos sobre as variáveis fitométricas. Aumento da condutividade elétrica promoveu incrementos no crescimento da Brassia verrucosa, bem como aumentos nos teores de N, P e K. A condutividade C3 (4,7 mS cm-1) aliada a frequências de aplicação quinzenais (F2) ou semanais (F3), resultaram no aumento de brotações.

A salinidade é um dos principais estresses abióticos que restringe o crescimento das plantas e causa perdas significativas no rendimento. Os efeitos do estresse salino são mais severos em regiões semiáridas, devido as condições climáticas e a ocorrência de fontes hídricas com teores elevados de sais. Neste contexto, a busca por estratégias que viabilizem o uso de águas salinas na irrigação é fundamental para garantir a necessidade de produção de alimentos. Assim, objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar os efeitos das aplicações foliar de concentrações de prolina nos índices fisiológicos de maracujazeiro-azedo irrigados com águas salinas na fase de formação de mudas. A pesquisa foi conduzida em casa de vegetação pertencente à Unidade Acadêmica de Engenharia Agrícola da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, em Campina Grande – PB, utilizando-se o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 5 × 4, sendo cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação CEa - (0,6; 1,2; 1,8; 2,4 e 3,0 dS m-1) e quatro concentrações de prolina (0, 5, 10 e 15 mM) com quatro repetições e cada parcela continha duas plantas, totalizando 160 unidades experimentais. A salinidade da água a partir de 0,6 dS m-1 reduziu o conteúdo relativo de água, trocas gasosas, e elevou o extravasamento de eletrólitos no limbo foliar das plantas de maracujazeiro-azedo. A irrigação com água de condutividade elétrica entre 1,3 e 1,8 dS m-1 estimulou a biossíntese de pigmentos fotossintéticos do maracujazeiro-azedo ‘BRS GA1’, aos 66 dias após a semeadura. A aplicação foliar de prolina nas concentrações variando de 4,5 e 6,5 mM aumentou a condutância estomática, a transpiração, a taxa de assimilação de CO2, a eficiência instantânea de carboxilação e os teores de clorofilas do maracujazeiro-azedo.

Os aquíferos costeiros constituem importante fonte de abastecimento de água para o estado do Ceará, sobretudo na época de estiagem, quando os reservatórios superficiais não apresentam a totalidade de seus volumes. Assim, esses aquíferos são frequentemente afetados pelo problema de intrusão marinha induzida pela explotação inadequada. O presente estudo foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de identificar o grau de vulnerabilidade à salinização por intrusão marinha para o sistema aquífero costeiro Dunas/Barreiras no município de Icapuí, Ceará, bem como avaliar a qualidade das águas subterrâneas com base nos parâmetros associados à salinização, tendo em vista a sua importância para a região, por constituir a principal fonte de abastecimento de água. Para tanto foi aplicada a metodologia GALDIT, que utiliza indicadores mapeáveis, representados pelo tipo de aquífero, condutividade hidráulica, altura da superfície potenciométrica, distância dos poços em relação à costa, razão rCl-/rHCO3- e espessura saturada, para quantificar e classificar a vulnerabilidade de aquíferos costeiros à intrusão da água do mar. Os resultados indicaram áreas com vulnerabilidade média e alta à salinização no sistema aquífero, definidas, principalmente, pela distância dos poços em relação à costa, altura da superfície potenciométrica e razão rCl-/rHCO3-. A qualidade das águas subterrâneas encontra-se comprometida, em relação à concentração de sais, em mais de 60% das amostras analisadas, porém, essa salinização está, provavelmente, mais relacionada aos aerossóis marinhos e/ou à infiltração de águas salobras de lagoas costeiras do que à mistura de águas subterrâneas marinhas e continentais promovida pela intrusão salina. Entretanto, a vulnerabilidade do sistema aquífero Dunas/Barreiras na área requer maior atenção em relação a gestão dos recursos hídricos, visto que modificações na demanda atual, com consequente aumento na explotação, podem acarretar no avanço da cunha salina em direção ao continente.

The knowledge of water consumption and the efficiency of water use by crops is extremely important in the elaboration of agronomic and hydraulic projects of hydroponic systems. Thus, the present study determined the water consumption and water use efficiency of ‘Biquinho’ pepper cultivated in the hydroponic system using seven levels of electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution (ECsol) of 2.70, 3.64, 4.58, 5.28, 6.09, 6.90, and 7.77 dS m-1 and six replicates in randomized blocks. The hydroponic system used was the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT). The water consumption per plant was determined at an interval of ten days in the crop cycle (120 days after transplanting). The maximum mean daily water consumption was equal to 5.88 L plant-1 during the period 111-120 DAT, for ECsol of 4.58 dS m-1. The maximum water consumption for the crop cycle (120 DAT) was 275.66 L per plant for an estimated ECsol = 4.11 dS m-1. The highest water use efficiency (WUE), based on the total production of fruit fresh mass (ripe and unripe fruits) of ‘Biquinho’ pepper was 10.84 kg m-3 up to an estimated ECsol of 5.18 dS m-1, with an exponential reduction thereafter. The use of mulch in the soil attenuates saline stress in corn plants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of irrigation with brackish water in soil under different plant mulches on the productive performance of corn. The study was carried out under field conditions, at the Piroás experimental farm at the Universidade da Integração Internacional da Lusofonia Afro-Brasileira, UNILAB, Redenção, Ceará, Brazil, from August to November 2020. The design was in a 5 × 3 factorial scheme, with four replications, the first factor being the electrical conductivity of the water, in which A1, A2, A3, A4, and A5, refers to 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 dS m-1, respectively, and the second factor the different types of mulch (no mulch - NM; mulch with banana leaves - MBL, and mulch with spontaneous plants - MSP. The following were evaluated: ear mass with and without straw, mass of 1,000 grains, length and diameter of the ear, and yield. Saline stress reduces the mass of 1,000 grains, the length and diameter of the ear of corn, the mass of the ear with and without straw in the presence mulch of weeds and banana leaves. The use of mulch of weeds and banana leaf mulch is more efficient for a smaller reduction in the weight of 1,000 grains compared to the control treatment (without mulch). Banana leaves and spontaneous plants associated with water of 1.0 and 3.0 dS m-1 enabled higher yield compared to the treatment without mulch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The depressive effects caused by salt stress are responsible for the decrease in crop productivity in arid and semi-arid regions. However, these effects can be minimized with different management strategies, such as the use of genotypes and forms of fertilization. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the productivity of two peanut genotypes, submitted to increasing levels of salinity and two forms of fertilization. A completely randomized design (DIC) was used, making use of the factorial scheme 3 x 2 x 2, with 4 repetitions. The first factor corresponded to the salinity levels of the irrigation water (1.0; 3.0; and 5.0 dS m-1). The second factor comprised two genotypes (Access 26 and Access 8) and the third factor corresponded to two types of fertilization (mineral, with NPK; organic, with bovine biofertilizer). The following variables were evaluated: pod length, pod diameter, pod number, dry peel mass, dry pod mass and productivity. Irrigation with 1.0 dS m-1 electrical conductivity water did not inhibit the production components of the peanut genotypes regardless of the type of fertilization. Access 26 when fertilized with bovine biofertilizer and irrigated with high salinity water was more efficient than access 8, showing a higher number of pods, dry pod mass and productivity. The use of mineral fertilizer was not able to mitigate the harmful effects of high salinity water, affecting the number of pods, pod dry matter and the productivity of both genotypes. The optimization of resources and time in the production of quality seedlings within a legal framework is of vital importance for greenhouse vegetable crops. This study evaluated the electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution and its effect on the survival and growth of bell pepper and tomato seedlings propagated by cuttings. The electrical conductivities evaluated were 0.92, 1.25, 1.50, and 1.75 dS m-1. The experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design with four replicates. The number of rooted plants, stem diameter, root length, number of leaves, leaf area, dry weight of leaves, stem, root, and total were determined. In addition, the following indices were determined: stem root index, slenderness index, leaf area ratio, specific leaf area, and pre-transplant horticultural quality index. In both crops, the highest number of rooted cuttings was obtained with the lowest electrical conductivity. Meanwhile, the average electrical conductivity favored leaf number, leaf area, biomass, and seedling quality indices. These results showed that the production of bell pepper and tomato seedlings can be done by cuttings using Stenier nutrient solution at electrical conductivities of 1.25 to 1.50 dS m-1 without affecting seedling quality. The Caatinga, a Brazilian biome, which has a microbiota with adaptation to both drought and salinity, within this ecosystem are bacteria such as those of the genus Bacillus that stimulate plant growth and increase resistance to biotic and abiotic factors. This study aimed to evaluate the development of corn irrigated with brackish water, through the inoculation of seeds with bacteria isolated from the Caatinga. The experiment was composed of 3 × 4 factorial, with bacteria: T0 (negative control); T1 - bacteria 1 (XX6.9); T2 - mix (XX6.9 + T1.1 and T11.1); and, three salinity levels: (1.5, 2.5, and 4.5 dS m-1) plus control treatment and six repetitions. The following growth analyses were performed at 15 and 54 days after sowing (DAS): plant height, stem diameter, root length, fresh mass, and biochemical analyses: reducing sugars (RS), total soluble sugars (TSS), and the amino acid proline content of leaf and root. The inoculum used increased the growth of the root system, promoting a gain in the accumulation of fresh mass at the beginning of cultivation and reducing its loss at 54 DAS. There was also an increase in carbohydrate accumulation, in addition to the promotion of osmotic adjustment of the cells with the accumulation of the amino acid proline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
