Background and objectives: 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] deficiency is prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), the associations between serum 25(OH)D levels and mortality in patients with CKD remain unclear, and this study aimed to explore these associations further. Methods: 4989 participants with CKD were enrolled in the study, and the Cox regression model was used to assess the effects of serum 25(OH)D concentrations on mortality risk. A restricted cubic spline model was used to explore the dose–response relationships, and threshold effect analysis was performed based on inflection points identified by a two-piecewise linear regression model. In addition, subgroup and sensitivity analyses were employed. Results: 1255 participants died during a mean follow-up period of 70 months. Compared with the 25(OH)D-deficient group, the fully adjusted hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for the 25(OH)D-adequate group were 0.631 (0.545, 0.730) for all-cause mortality, 0.569 (0.435, 0.743) for cardiovascular mortality, 0.637 (0.461, 0.878) for hypertension mortality, and cancer mortality was 0.596 (0.426, 0.834). The inflection points of serum 25(OH)D concentration affecting all-cause and cardiovascular mortality were 89 nmol/L, and 107 nmol/L, respectively. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests suggested that the effects varied across populations. The results of sensitivity analyses indicated a reliable correlation. Conclusion: We found an association between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and the prognosis of patients with CKD as a reliable predictor of early intervention and intensive care. The circulating vitamin D level that is optimal for health is unknown. This study aimed to examine the association between circulating vitamin D level and risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality. This prospective cohort study included 18,797 Korean adults aged 40 years or older, living in rural areas, with no history of cancer or cardiovascular disease (CVD) at baseline. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels were measured at baseline. Participants were followed-up from the survey date (2005–2012) until December 31, 2021. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for mortality by baseline vitamin D level. Restricted cubic splines were used to explore the nonlinearity. The median (interquartile range) of 25(OH)D level was 55.8 (40.8–71.8) nmol/L. During a median follow-up of 14.3 years, 2250 deaths were recorded. Compared with participants with a 25(OH)D level <30 nmol/L, higher vitamin D levels (30 to < 50, 50 to < 75, and ≥75 nmol/L) were associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality: HR (95% CI) of 0.82 (0.69–0.98), 0.74 (0.62–0.88), and 0.69 (0.57–0.84), respectively. A nonlinear relationship between vitamin D level and all-cause mortality was observed, with the risk plateauing between 50 and 60 nmol/L (p for nonlinearity = 0.009). The association was more pronounced for cancer-related mortality. HR 0.55 (95% CI: 0.39–0.77) for a 25(OH)D level ≥75 nmol/L compared with <30.0 nmol/L. Low vitamin D levels were associated with increased CVD mortality in men. Vitamin D level was inversely associated with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in middle-aged and older adults. This review and meta-analysis assessed the relationship between vitamin D levels and the risk of breast and endometrial cancers, and the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation as a preventive strategy. We searched PubMed and the Cochrane Library using "vitamin D" and "breast and endometrial cancer," focusing on human studies in English. Ten high-quality studies were selected based on robust design and data integrity. We analyzed effect sizes--odds ratios, risk ratios, and hazard ratios with 95% confidence intervals--using a random-effects model. Our findings suggest that higher vitamin D levels are linked to a lower risk of these cancers, especially in premenopausal women and those with greater sun exposure. Although some studies found no significant links, the overall evidence supports vitamin D's protective potential. Further randomized trials are necessary to confirm these results and define vitamin D deficiency standards in cancer risk assessment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A study published in the Clinical & Experimental Allergy journal found that low levels of vitamin D in early childhood were associated with aeroallergen-specific IgE in children with a history of severe bronchiolitis. However, there was no association between vitamin D levels and total, food-specific, or outdoor-aeroallergen-specific IgE. The study suggests that vitamin D plays a role in immune modulation and may be involved in allergic diseases. The study had limitations, such as a small sample size and not accounting for geographic factors and individual allergen exposure. Background The causal relationship between the level of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and the risk of erectile dysfunction (ED) is still unclear. Aim We tried to determine the causal relationship between the level of serum 25(OH)D and ED risk. Methods In this study, we used genome-wide association study data from the UK Biobank to analyse the relationship between serum 25(OH)D (as the exposure) and ED (as the outcome). Linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) was used to assess the genetic correlation between 2 traits. The CAUSE (Causal Analysis using Summary Effect estimates) method and Mendelian randomization (MR) were employed to evaluate the bidirectional causal relationship. The MRlap method was utilized to assess the impact of sample overlap on the results. To assess potential heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy, we utilized methods such as MR-Egger, MR-PRESSO (Mendelian Randomization Pleiotropy Residual Sum and Outlier), weighted median, and others. Outcomes The primary outcome was defined as self or physician-reported ED, or using oral ED medication, or a history of surgery related to ED. Results The LDSC analysis did not reveal a significant genetic correlation between serum 25(OH)D and ED (rg = 0.2787, P =.3536). Additionally, the CAUSE (P value testing that the causal model is a better fit >.05) and MR analyses (odds ratio, 0.8951; 95% confidence interval, 0.7480-1.0710; P =.2260) did not support a causal relationship between 25(OH)D and ED, and our study did not detect any heterogeneity and pleiotropy. Clinical implications This study provides evidence on whether vitamin D needs to be ingested to prevent or treat ED. Strengths and limitations We used LDSC and MR to avoid bias. With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the absence of established evidence-based treatment protocols led healthcare professionals and the public to explore experimental treatments, including high doses of vitamin D supplements. This study aimed to assess changes in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels during the pandemic, employing a retrospective cohort analysis of data from Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC). The study analyzed serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in a cohort of 35,556 patients treated at CAMC in 2019, a representative pre-pandemic period, to 2021, a representative pandemic period. Our findings revealed a significant increase in mean serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels as compared with 2019 (37 ± 21 vs. 31 ± 15 ng/mL, p ≤ 0.001). Additionally, in 2021, there were significantly more patients exhibiting serum levels in the highest quintiles, specifically >100 ng/mL (1.6% vs. 0.2%), 75–100 ng/mL (4.6% vs. 1.2%), and 50–75 ng/mL (16.0% vs. 8.4%), p ≤ 0.001. This upsurge suggests increased intake of vitamin D supplements, potentially fueled by widespread discussions that were taking place largely on the internet regarding the efficacy of vitamin D against COVID-19. Our findings underscore the critical need for evidence-based public health messaging, especially during health crises, to prevent unnecessary health risks and ensure patient safety. Abstract Limited studies have triangulated the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) or hypertension risk utilizing both observational and Mendelian randomization (MR) approaches. We employed data from the Norwegian Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT) to conduct cross-sectional (n = 5854) and prospective (n = 3592) analyses, as well as one-sample MR (n = 86,324). We also used largest publicly available data for two-sample MR. Our cross-sectional analyses showed a 25 nmol/L increase in 25(OH)D was associated with a 1.73 mmHg decrease in SBP (95% CI − 2.46 to − 1.01), a 0.91 mmHg decrease in DBP (95% CI − 1.35 to − 0.47) and 19% lower prevalence of hypertension (OR 0.81, 95% CI 0.74 to 0.90) after adjusting for important confounders. However, these associations disappeared in prospective analyses. One-sample and two-sample MR results further suggested no causal relationship between serum vitamin D levels and blood pressure or hypertension risk in the general population.

Background: Although the beneficial properties of vitamin D in anti-inflammation and immunity-modulation are promising in the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), data were limited for the critical IBD prognosis. The association between serum vitamin D levels and the risk of bowel resection in individuals with IBD remains largely unknown. Materials and Methods: The authors performed a longitudinal cohort study among 5474 individuals with IBD in the UK Biobank. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] was measured using direct competitive chemiluminescent immunoassay. Bowel resection events were ascertained via national inpatient data. Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazard regression was used to examine the association between serum 25(OH)D and bowel resection risk, presented with hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) was used to evaluate dose-response associations. Results: During a mean follow-up of 13.1 years, the authors documented 513 incident bowel resection cases. Compared to participants with vitamin D deficiency, nondeficient participants showed a significantly reduced bowel resection risk in IBD (HR 0.72, 95% CI: 0.59-0.87, P=0.001), Crohn's disease (CD, HR 0.74, 95% CI: 0.56-0.98, P= 0.038), and ulcerative colitis (UC, HR 0.73, 95% CI: 0.57-0.95, P=0.020). When comparing extreme quintiles of 25(OH)D level, participants with IBD showed a 34% reduced risk of bowel resection (95% CI: 11-51%, P= 0.007) and participants with UC showed a 46% reduced risk (95% CI: 19-64%, P =0.003), while this association was not significant in CD (HR 0.93, 95% CI: 0.59-1.45, P=0.740). Linear dose-response associations were observed using the RCS curve (all P-nonlinearity > 0.05). Conclusion: Increased serum level of 25(OH)D is independently associated with reduced bowel resection risk in IBD. This association was significant in UC but may not be stable in CD. Objective: This study investigated the association of circulating levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) with the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components in adults. Methods: This nationwide cohort involved 23,810 Chinese adults attending annual health evaluations. Serum 25(OH)D levels, MetS status, and covariates were determined at each examination. Among them, 8146, 3310, and 1971 completed two, three, and more than three evaluations, respectively. A hybrid mixed-effects and Cox regression model was employed to determine the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships. Results: The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of MetS were significantly lower in individuals within quartile 4 (vs. 1) of serum 25(OH)D for both between-individual (0.43 [0.35, 0.52]) and within-individual comparisons (0.60 [0.50, 0.73]), respectively (all p-trends < 0.001). Among the MetS components, the corresponding ORs (95% CI) in between- and within-individual comparisons were 0.40 (0.29, 0.54) and 0.26 (0.19, 0.36) for abdominal obesity, 0.49 (0.41, 0.58) and 0.78 (0.66, 0.93) for high triglycerides, 0.70 (0.59, 0.82) and 0.75 (0.64, 0.87) for hypertriglyceridemia, 0.48 (0.39, 0.59) and 0.87 (0.71, 1.07) for low HDL cholesterol, and 0.92 (0.76, 1.12) and 0.49 (0.41, 0.59) for hypertension, respectively. Decreased hazard ratios (95% CIs) in quartile 4 (vs. 1) of 25(OH)D were found for MetS (0.80 [0.65, 1.00]), high triglycerides (0.76 [0.62, 0.92]), abdominal obesity (0.77 [0.63, 0.96]), and low HDL cholesterol (0.64 [0.50, 0.81]). Conclusions: Decreased concentrations of serum 25(OH)D correlate significantly to a heightened MetS risk and specific components. To examine the association of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] with all-cause mortality and disease-specific mortality in patients with hypertension. This cohort study included US adults in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2018. All-cause mortality and cause-specific mortality outcomes were determined by association with National Death Index records. Cox proportional risk models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for all-cause mortality and cause-specific mortality and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for serum 25(OH)D concentrations. The cohort included 10,325 adult participants. The mean serum 25(OH)D level was 65.87 nmol/L, and 32.2% of patients were vitamin D deficient (<50 nmol/L). During a mean follow-up of 77 months, 1290 deaths were recorded, including 345 cardiovascular deaths and 237 cancer deaths. Patients with higher serum 25(OH)D were more likely to have lower all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality than those with serum 25(OH)D < 25.00 nmol/L. For cancer mortality in hypertensive patients, vitamin D may not have a predictive role in this. This study shows that higher 25(OH)D levels are significantly associated with lower all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. Deficient concentrations of vitamin D have been linked to several cardiovascular conditions, but the causal relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and right ventricular structure and function remains unclear. Mendelian randomization (MR) was employed to inspect this association. Genetic instrumental variables associated with 25(OH)D levels were acquired from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) analyses. Summary statistics for right ventricular structure and function, including right ventricular end diastolic volume, right ventricular end systolic volume, right ventricular stroke volume, and right ventricular ejection fraction, were acquired from publicly available GWAS datasets. For the primary analysis, the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was utilized in performing the MR analysis. Additionally, secondly analyses were conducted to estimate the robustness and consistency of the attained conclusions. The MR analysis did not reveal a considerable causal association between serum 25(OH)D levels and right ventricular end diastolic volume (β: 0.112, 95% confident interval [CI]: −0.006 to 0.230, p = 0.063), right ventricular end systolic volume (β: 0.102, 95% CI: −0.021 to 0.226, p = 0.105), right ventricular stroke volume (β: 0.095, 95% CI: −0.018 to 0.207, p = 0.099), or right ventricular ejection fraction (β: −0.005, 95% CI: −0.123 to 0.112, p = 0.928). Our findings did not reveal any substantial evidence supporting a causal relationship between serum 25(OH)D levels and the structure and function of the right ventricle. BackgroundToxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is a widespread zoonotic parasite transmitted through contaminated food or water. It poses a significant public health threat, especially to pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals. 25-Hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] plays a critical role in regulating both innate and adaptive immune responses, particularly in its anti-infective capacity. However, the relationship between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and T. gondii infection remains uncertain.MethodsWe analyzed the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2009–2014 to explore the association between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and T. gondii infection. Extensive demographic, comorbidity, and dietary data were collected. The status of T. gondii infection was determined using serum anti-IgG antibodies. Serum 25(OH)D levels were measured using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS). In addition, weighted logistic regression and restricted cubic spline analyses were performed.ResultsOur analysis included 10,157 participants (mean [SE] age, 45.38 [0.39] years; 49.73% female) who met the inclusion criteria. Serum 25(OH)D levels were categorized into quintiles, with the second quintile serving as the reference group. The final model, adjusted for age, sex, race, education level, poverty income ratio, body mass index, smoking status, hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, depression, physical activity, alcohol intake, seasonal testing, and dietary vitamin D, revealed the following adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for the quintiles: 0.75 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.60–0.93) for the first, 0.87 (95% CI: 0.69–1.10) for the third, 0.75 (95% CI: 0.58–0.95) for the fourth, and 0.66 (95% CI: 0.49–0.91) for the fifth. Additionally, a restricted cubic spline analysis revealed an inverted U-shaped relationship between serum 25(OH)D and T. gondii infection, with an inflection point at approximately 51.29 nmol/L. Odds ratios to the left and right of the inflection point were 1.17 (95% CI: 1.03–1.32) and 0.94 (95% CI, 0.90–0.98) per 10 nmol/L, respectively.ConclusionOur study uncovers an inverted U-shaped relationship between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and T. gondii infection, with an inflection point around 51.29 nmol/L.

Abstract Background Prehypertension affects 25–50% of adults worldwide and no prior study has examined the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations and mortality risk in individuals with prehypertension. This study aims to investigate the association of serum 25(OH)D concentrations with all-cause and CVD mortality among prehypertensive adults by utilizing data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2014 and linked 2019 mortality file. Methods We included 4345 prehypertensive adults who participated in the NHANES between 2007 and 2014 and were followed up until 31 December 2019. Weighted Cox proportional hazards models were used with adjustments for multiple covariates to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the risks of dying from any cause and CVD. Results During a median follow-up of 8.8 years, 335 deaths from any causes were documented, of which 88 participants died from CVD. Abstract Background Mediation analysis aims to determine how intermediate variables affect exposure to disease. In this study, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) was evaluated to assess its role in mediating heavy metal exposure and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods A total of 9,377 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for the years 2011-2018 were included. Firstly, restricted cubic spline (RCS), and multivariable logistic regression model were performed to estimate the association between heavy metal exposure (Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, Manganese, and Selenium), as well as serum 25(OH)D and CVD. Secondly, using generalized linear regression model and generalized additive models with smooth functions, we investigated the correlation between heavy metal exposure and serum 25(OH)D. Finally, the mediation effect of serum 25(OH)D in the associations between heavy metal exposure and CVD was explored. Results The RCS plots revealed that Cadmium, and Lead were positively and linearly associated with CVD, while Mercury, and Manganese were inversely and linearly associated with CVD. Additionally, a roughly L- and U-shaped relationship existed between Selenium, as well as 25(OH)D and CVD. When potential confounding factors were adjusted for, serum 25(OH)D had negative associations with Cadmium, Lead, and Manganese, while serum 25(OH)D had positive relationship with Selenium. There was a mediation effect between Manganese exposure and CVD, which was mediated by 25(OH)D. Conclusion According to the mediation analysis, the negative association between Manganese exposure and incident CVD was increased by 25(OH)D. The increasing dietary intake of Vitamin D could increase the protective effect of manganese intake on CVD.

Purpose: The objective of this systematic review was to determine a minimum serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) threshold based on the risk of having rickets in young children. This work was commissioned by the WHO and FAO within the framework of the update of the vitamin D requirements for children 0–3 years old. Methods: A systematic search of Embase was conducted to identify studies involving children below 4 years of age with serum 25OHD levels and radiologically confirmed rickets, without any restriction related to the geographical location or language. Study-level and individual participant data (IPD)-level random effects multi-level meta-analyses were conducted. The odds, sensitivity and specificity for rickets at different serum 25OHD thresholds were calculated for all children as well as for children with adequate calcium intakes only. Results: A total of 120 studies with 5412 participants were included. At the study-level, children with rickets had a mean serum 25OHD of 23 nmol/L (95% CI 19–27). At the IPD level, children with rickets had a median and mean serum 25OHD of 23 and 29 nmol/L, respectively. More than half (55%) of the children with rickets had serum 25OHD below 25 nmol/L, 62% below 30 nmol/L, and 79% below 40 nmol/L. Analysis of odds, sensitivities and specificities for nutritional rickets at different serum 25OHD thresholds suggested a minimal risk threshold of around 28 nmol/L for children with adequate calcium intakes and 40 nmol/L for children with low calcium intakes. Conclusion: This systematic review and IPD meta-analysis suggests that from a public health perspective and to inform the development of dietary requirements for vitamin D, a minimum serum 25OHD threshold of around 28 nmol/L and above would represent a low risk of nutritional rickets for the majority of children with an adequate calcium intake. Background The association between vitamin D and dementia risk in those with prediabetes remains uncertain. We aimed to evaluate the association of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) with incident dementia among older adults with prediabetes, and examine whether apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotypes, vitamin D receptor (VDR), and vitamin-D-binding protein (VDBP) gene polymorphisms may modify this association. Methods A total of 34 237 participants aged ≥60 with prediabetes (HbA1c <6.5% and ≥5.7%) and without dementia at baseline were included from the UK Biobank. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) was measured using chemiluminescent immunoassay method. The primary outcome was incident all-cause dementia. Secondary outcomes included incident Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia, respectively. The VDR and VDBP gene polymorphisms included single nucleotide polymorphisms of rs7975232, rs1544410, rs2228570, rs731236, and rs7041, rs4588, respectively. Results During a median follow-up of 11.8 years, 941 (2.7%) participants developed incident all-cause dementia. Overall, serum 25OHD was inversely associated with all-cause dementia (per standard deviation increment, adjusted hazard ratio: 0.82; 95% confidence interval: 0.75, 0.89). Similar trends were found for incident AD and vascular dementia. Furthermore, there was a stronger inverse relationship between serum 25OHD and all-cause dementia among VDR rs7975232 C allele noncarriers (p -interaction < 0.05). However, APOE Ɛ4, other VDR, and VDBP gene polymorphisms did not significantly modify the relation of serum 25OHD with incident all-cause dementia (all p -interactions >.05). Background: Mediation analysis aims to determine how intermediate variables affect exposure to disease. In this study, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) was evaluated to assess its role in mediating heavy metal exposure and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods: A total of 9,377 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for the years 2011-2018 were included. Firstly, restricted cubic spline (RCS), and multivariable logistic regression model were performed to estimate the association between heavy metal exposure (Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, Manganese, and Selenium), as well as serum 25(OH)D and CVD. Secondly, using generalized linear regression model and generalized additive models with smooth functions, we investigated the correlation between heavy metal exposure and serum 25(OH)D. Finally, the mediation effect of serum 25(OH)D in the associations between heavy metal exposure and CVD was explored. Results: The RCS plots revealed that Cadmium, and Lead were positively and linearly associated with CVD, while Mercury, and Manganese were inversely and linearly associated with CVD. Additionally, a roughly L- and U-shaped relationship existed between Selenium, as well as 25(OH)D and CVD. When potential confounding factors were adjusted for, serum 25(OH)D had negative associations with Cadmium, Lead, and Manganese, while serum 25(OH)D had positive relationship with Selenium. There was a mediation effect between Manganese exposure and CVD, which was mediated by 25(OH)D. Conclusion: According to the mediation analysis, the negative association between Manganese exposure and incident CVD was increased by 25(OH)D. Background: Prehypertension affects 25–50% of adults worldwide and no prior study has examined the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations and mortality risk in individuals with prehypertension. This study aims to investigate the association of serum 25(OH)D concentrations with all-cause and CVD mortality among prehypertensive adults by utilizing data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2014 and linked 2019 mortality file. Methods: We included 4345 prehypertensive adults who participated in the NHANES between 2007 and 2014 and were followed up until 31 December 2019. Weighted Cox proportional hazards models were used with adjustments for multiple covariates to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the risks of dying from any cause and CVD. Results: During a median follow-up of 8.8 years, 335 deaths from any causes were documented, of which 88 participants died from CVD. Compared with participants with sufficient 25(OH)D (≥ 75 nmol/L), the multivariate-adjusted HRs and 95% CIs for participants with severe deficiency (< 25 nmol/L), moderate deficiency (25–49.9 nmol/L), and insufficient concentrations (50–74.9 nmol/L) of serum 25(OH)D for all-cause death were 2.83 (1.46–5.52), 1.17 (0.74–1.86), and 1.36 (0.93–1.98), respectively. Similarly, the multivariable-adjusted HRs and 95%CIs for CVD death were 4.14 (1.10–15.51), 1.23 (0.46–3.28), and 1.73 (0.96–3.14), respectively. We found that there was a 9% reduction in the risk of death from all causes and a 14% reduction in the risk of death from CVD for every 10 nmol/L increase in serum 25(OH)D concentrations. Conclusion: Severe serum 25(OH)D deficiency among prehypertensive adults was associated with increased risk of mortality from all causes as well as from CVD. BackgroundSerum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level is associated with erectile dysfunction (ED) in observational studies. However, whether there is a causal association between them remains uncertain.ObjectiveConduct a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the causal effect between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level and ED risk.MethodGenome-wide association study (GWAS) data of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels comprising 6,896,093 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) from 496,949 people of European ancestry were regarded as exposure for the MR analysis. Additional GWAS data involving 9,310,196 SNPs of 6,175 European ED cases and 217,630 controls were used as outcome data. The MR-Egger, inverse variance weighted (IVW) method, weighted median, simple mode, and weighted mode were employed to evaluate causal effects, among which IVW was the primary MR analysis method. The stability of the MR analysis results was confirmed by a heterogeneity test, a horizontal pleiotropy test, and the leave-one-out method.ResultThere were 103 SNPs utilized as instrumental variables (p < 5 × 10−8). The results of MR analysis showed no causal effects of serum 25(OH) D concentration on ED risks (IVW; OR = 0.9516, 95% CI = 0.7994 to 1.1328, p = 0.5772). There was no heterogeneity and pleiotropy in the statistical models.ConclusionThe present MR study did not support a causal association for genetically predicted serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration in the risk of ED in individuals of European descent.

Introduction: Vitamin D binding protein (VDBP) plays a crucial role in vitamin D transport and metabolism. The rs4588-A polymorphism of the GC gene, encoding VDBP, has been associated with altered serum VDBP and 25- hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the relationship between urinary VDBP excretion and serum VDBP and 25OHD levels in individuals with and without the rs4588-A allele. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 109 children (mean age: 11.96 years) to explore the impact of rs4588-A on vitamin D metabolism and urinary VDBP excretion. Biochemical analyses determined serum 25OHD and VDBP levels, and urinary VDBP-to-creatinine ratio (u-VDBP/Cr). Genotyping for rs4588 SNP was performed using LightSNiP assay. Statistical analyses included correlation, linear regression, and comparison between allele groups. Results: Participants carrying the rs4588-A allele exhibited lower serum 25OHD levels compared to non-carriers (median (IQR): 11.85 (3.5) vs. 12.86 (4.9), p = 0.023). However, no statistically significant differences were observed in serum VDBP levels (126.34 ± 59.3 in rs4588-A vs. 136.49 ± 51.3 in non-rs4588-A, p = 0.141) or in u-VDBP/Cr (median (IQR): 0.4 (0.35) in rs4588-A vs. 0.386 (0.43) in non-rs4588-A, p = 0.189) between the two allele groups. A significant inverse correlation between u-VDBP/Cr and serum VDBP levels was found only in rs4588-A carriers (r = -0.367, p = 0.024). No such correlation was observed in non-carriers or the entire cohort. A linear regression analysis confirmed the impact of u-VDBP/Cr on serum VDBP levels in rs4588-A carriers (B = -0.269, t = -2.185, p = 0.035). Conclusion: Individuals with the rs4588-A allele in the GC gene had lower serum 25OHD levels. An inverse correlation between urinary VDBP excretion and serum VDBP levels was observed, suggesting a partial role of the renal pathway in altered serum VDBP and 25OHD levels linked to the rs4588-A allele. Background and Objectives: The usual recommended intake of vitamin D for healthy infants is 400 international unit (IU) daily. However, a high dose of vitamin D at 2000-3000 IU daily is needed for those with vitamin D deficiency (VDD). This study aimed to assess the natural history of a group of healthy infants with VDD and the associated factors for persistent VDD. Methods and Study Design: Healthy infants detected to have VDD (25OHD <25 nmol/L) in a population study were followed, and their demographics and clinical data were collected. Results: One hundred and thirty-one subjects (boys = 66%) were included. Their first serum 25OHD was taken at a median age of 87.5 days. None were treated with high-dose vitamin D supplements, but some have been given vitamin D at 400 IU daily. They were assessed again at the median age of 252.5 days when 15 remained to have VDD and 26 were in the insufficient range (25 - 49.9nmol/L). All persistent VDD children were on exclusive breastfeeding. Exclusive breastfeeding and no vitamin D supplementation were significant risk factors for persistent vitamin D insufficiency (<50nmol/L). Abstract Objective Observational studies have shown an association between 25‐hydroxyvitamin D (25 (OH) D) and epilepsy, but it is unclear whether the association is causal. Therefore, we applied Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to determine the causal relationship between serum 25 (OH) D levels and epilepsy. Methods We conducted a two‐sample Mendelian randomization (TSMR) study to investigate the association between serum 25 (OH) D levels and epilepsy using pooled statistics from genome‐wide association studies (GWAS). Data for 25 (OH) D came from a GWAS comprising 417,580 participants, and data for epilepsy were obtained from the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) consortium. Five methods were used to analyze TSMR, including the inverse variance weighting method, MR Egger method, weighted median method, simple model, and weighted model. In the sensitivity analysis, MR Egger and MR PRESSO methods were used to test for pleiotropy, inverse variance weighting and MR Egger in Cochran's Q statistics were used to test for heterogeneity. Results MR analyzed the relationship between 25 (OH) D and different types of epilepsy, and the results showed that a 1 standard deviation increase in natural log‐transformed serum 25 (OH) D levels was associated with reduced risk for juvenile absence epilepsy (IVW OR = 0.985; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.971–0.999; P‐value = 0.038). There was no apparent heterogeneity and horizontal gene pleiotropy. Significance Higher serum levels of 25 (OH) D were a protective factor for adolescent absence epilepsy, but had no effect on other types of epilepsy.

With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the absence of established evidence-based treatment protocols led healthcare professionals and the public to explore experimental treatments, including high doses of vitamin D supplements. This study aimed to assess changes in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels during the pandemic, employing a retrospective cohort analysis of data from Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC). The study analyzed serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in a cohort of 35,556 patients treated at CAMC in 2019, a representative pre-pandemic period, to 2021, a representative pandemic period. Our findings revealed a significant increase in mean serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels as compared with 2019 (37 ± 21 vs. 31 ± 15 ng/mL, p ≤ 0.001). Additionally, in 2021, there were significantly more patients exhibiting serum levels in the highest quintiles, specifically >100 ng/mL (1.6% vs. 0.2%), 75–100 ng/mL (4.6% vs. 1.2%), and 50–75 ng/mL (16.0% vs. 8.4%), p ≤ 0.001. This upsurge suggests increased intake of vitamin D supplements, potentially fueled by widespread discussions that were taking place largely on the internet regarding the efficacy of vitamin D against COVID-19. Our findings underscore the critical need for evidence-based public health messaging, especially during health crises, to prevent unnecessary health risks and ensure patient safety.

Objective: This study investigated the association of circulating levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) with the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components in adults. Methods: This nationwide cohort involved 23,810 Chinese adults attending annual health evaluations. Serum 25(OH)D levels, MetS status, and covariates were determined at each examination. Among them, 8146, 3310, and 1971 completed two, three, and more than three evaluations, respectively. A hybrid mixed-effects and Cox regression model was employed to determine the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships. Results: The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of MetS were significantly lower in individuals within quartile 4 (vs. 1) of serum 25(OH)D for both between-individual (0.43 [0.35, 0.52]) and within-individual comparisons (0.60 [0.50, 0.73]), respectively (all p-trends < 0.001). Among the MetS components, the corresponding ORs (95% CI) in between- and within-individual comparisons were 0.40 (0.29, 0.54) and 0.26 (0.19, 0.36) for abdominal obesity, 0.49 (0.41, 0.58) and 0.78 (0.66, 0.93) for high triglycerides, 0.70 (0.59, 0.82) and 0.75 (0.64, 0.87) for hypertriglyceridemia, 0.48 (0.39, 0.59) and 0.87 (0.71, 1.07) for low HDL cholesterol, and 0.92 (0.76, 1.12) and 0.49 (0.41, 0.59) for hypertension, respectively. Decreased hazard ratios (95% CIs) in quartile 4 (vs. 1) of 25(OH)D were found for MetS (0.80 [0.65, 1.00]), high triglycerides (0.76 [0.62, 0.92]), abdominal obesity (0.77 [0.63, 0.96]), and low HDL cholesterol (0.64 [0.50, 0.81]). Conclusions: Decreased concentrations of serum 25(OH)D correlate significantly to a heightened MetS risk and specific components. Our findings underscore the potential preventive function of circulating vitamin D concerning metabolic disorders.

The role of circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in the prevention of early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) in young adults aged <50 years is uncertain. We evaluated the age-stratified associations (<50 vs ≥50 years) between circulating 25(OH)D levels and the risk of CRC in a large sample of Korean adults. Our cohort study included 236,382 participants (mean age, 38.0 [standard deviation, 9.0] years) who underwent a comprehensive health examination, including measurement of serum 25(OH)D levels. Serum 25(OH)D levels were categorized as <10, 10 to 20, and ≥20 ng/mL. CRC, along with the histologic subtype, site, and invasiveness, was ascertained through linkage with the national cancer registry. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for incident CRC according to the serum 25(OH)D status, with adjustment for potential confounders. During the 1,393,741 person-years of follow-up (median, 6.5 years; interquartile range, 4.5–7.5 years), 341 participants developed CRC (incidence rate, 19.2 per 105 person-years). Among young individuals aged <50 years, serum 25(OH)D levels were inversely associated with the risk of incident CRC with HRs (95% CIs) of 0.61 (0.43–0.86) and 0.41 (0.27–0.63) for 25(OH)D 10 to 19 ng/mL and ≥20 ng/mL, respectively, with respect to the reference (<10 ng/mL) (P for trend <.001, time-dependent model). Significant associations were evident for adenocarcinoma, colon cancer, and invasive cancers. For those aged ≥50 years, associations were similar, although slightly attenuated compared with younger individuals. Background: Despite numerous observational studies on the association between serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels and cutaneous melanoma, causal inferences remain ambiguous due to confounding and reverse causality. This study aimed to elucidate the causal relationship between serum 25- Hydroxyvitamin D levels and melanoma incidence using Mendelian randomization (MR). Methods: A two-sample MR was conducted using genetic variants associated with serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels as instrumental variables. Summary statistics for these variants were derived from genome-wide association studies, and those for melanoma risk were obtained from a comprehensive melanoma case-control study. Robustness of the results was assessed through sensitivity analyses, including the “leave-one-out” approach and tests for potential pleiotropy. Results: The MR analysis provided substantial evidence of a positive causal relationship between serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels and the incidence of cutaneous melanoma, suggesting that each unit increase in serum 25- Hydroxyvitamin D levels corresponds with an increased risk of melanoma. Tests for pleiotropy showed minimal effects, and the sensitivity analysis confirmed no disproportionate influence by any individual single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP). Conclusion: The findings indicated a potentially causal positive association between serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels and melanoma risk, challenging traditional beliefs about vitamin D’s role in melanoma. This emphasizes the need for a balanced and personalized approach to vitamin D supplementation and sun exposure, particularly in high-risk populations. Improving lung health in children requires understanding the risk factors for decreased lung function. Our objective was to investigate the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and lung function in children. We analyzed data from a prospective cohort of infants hospitalized with bronchiolitis (severe bronchiolitis), a group at high risk for developing childhood asthma. Children were followed longitudinally, and 25(OH)D and spirometry testing were conducted at ages 3 and 6, respectively. We used a multivariable linear regression adjusted for race/ethnicity, annual household income, premature birth, and secondhand smoke exposure to examine the association between serum 25(OH)D level and primary outcomes (percent predicted [pp] of forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) and the forced vital capacity (FVC)) and secondary outcome (FEV1pp/FVCpp). Serum 25(OH)D level and age 6 spirometry were available for 363 children. In adjusted analyses comparing the highest quintile (Q5) of serum 25(OH)D (median 37 ng/mL) to the lowest quintile (Q1; median 18 ng/mL), FEV1pp was 6% lower (p = 0.03) in Q1. Likewise, FVCpp was 7% lower (p = 0.03) in Q1. There was no difference in FEV1pp/FVCpp across the serum 25(OH)D quintiles. Objective To retrospectively analyze the serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25（OH）D] in patients with drug-naive depression and its correlation with gender and age， compare with their counterparts with other mental disorders to guide clinical work. Serum 25（OH）D levels were compared between depression patients and those with other mental disorders， and compared among depression patients of different genders and ages. Results Serum 25（OH）D level in patients with depressive disorders was higher than that in those with bipolar disorders， whereas lower than those in their counterparts with organic mental disorders， schizophrenia， anxiety disorders， and sleep disorders （all P < 0.05）. Serum 25（OH）D level was deficient in 55.7%， insufficient in 37.0% and sufficient in 7.4% of patients with depressive disorders. Serum 25（OH）D level in female patients was lower than that in male counterparts （P < 0.001）. Serum 25（OH）D level in juvenile patients was lower than that in elderly counterparts （P < 0.001）. Conclusions Serum 25（OH）D level in patients with depressive disorder differs from those in their counterparts with other mental disorders， prompting that the role of serum 25（OH）D in the episode and prognosis of depressive disorders deserves further investigation. Serum 25（OH）D deficiency and insufficiency are common in patients with depressive disorders， especially in female and juvenile patients. These findings suggest that it is necessary to deliver screening of serum 25（OH）D level in these populations and supplement vitamin D in a timely manner.

The purpose of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D[25(OH)D] levels and gastric cancer. PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, The China Academic Journals full-text database, Wanfang Database of Chinese Academic Journals, VIP Chinese Science and Technology Periodicals database, and Chinese Biomedical Literature database were systematically searched. Case-control studies on the correlation between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and gastric cancer were retrieved, and the data extracted were analyzed. The results of 9 case-control studies containing 671 patients showed that serum 25(OH)D levels in the gastric cancer group were lower than those in the control group (weighted mean difference (WMD) = −8.90, 95% confidence interval (CI): −11.5, −6.32, p < 0.01); the risk of vitamin D deficiency in the gastric cancer group was higher than that in the control group (Odds ratio = 3.09, 95% CI: 1.96, 4.87, p < 0.01). The serum 25(OH)D levels in patients with well and moderately differentiated gastric cancer were higher than those in patients with poorly differentiated gastric cancer (WMD = −3.58, 95% CI: −6.41, −0.74, p = 0.01). The objective of this study was to investigate the association between food patterns and serum vitamin D concentrations in US adults. Data from two cycles of National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, 2003–2004 and 2005–2006, were used (n 6637). Three major food patterns were derived using factor analysis. These three patterns were labeled as meat and processed meat foods (MPF), vegetables, fruit, nuts, and whole grains (VFNW), and sweet, snack, and beverage pattern (SSB). Serum vitamin D was measured with RIA and later standardized to reflect the assay changes over time. In multivariate-adjusted regression analysis, the MPF pattern was significantly, inversely associated with serum vitamin D concentrations (P < 0·001). However, the relation between the VFNW pattern and serum vitamin D was non-linear (P < 0·001). There was no relationship between SSB pattern and serum vitamin D in US adults. In conclusion, persons with a high intake of meat and processed meats are associated with lower serum vitamin D concentrations. BackgroundInsulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) plays a vital role in the attainment and maintenance of bone mass throughout life and is closely related to the stature of children. 25-Hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) is an intermediate of vitamin D (Vit D) metabolism and a key indicator of Vit D nutritional status. Multiple studies have revealed that IGF-1 levels undergo a non-significant increase after Vit D supplementation. Here, we analyzed the causal and reverse causal relationships between 25-OHD and IGF-1 levels using Mendelian randomization (MR).MethodsTwo-sample MR was used to estimate an unconfounded bidirectional causal relationship between the level of IGF-1 and those of Vit D and 25-OHD. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were filtered from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) after a comprehensive search of the Integrative Epidemiology Unit GWAS database. Several MR methods were employed, including inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method, and a sensitivity analysis was undertaken to detect whether pleiotropy or heterogeneity biased the MR results.ResultsGenetically predicted IGF-1 was found to have a causal association with Vit D and serum 25-OHD levels, where Vit D and serum 25-OHD levels increased with increasing IGF-1 concentrations (Vit D: IVW β:0.021, 95% CI: 0.005–0.036, p = 7.74 × 10–3; 25-OHD: IVW β: 0.041, 95% CI: 0.026–0.057, p = 2.50 × 10–7). A reverse causal effect was also found, indicating Vit D and serum 25-OHD have a positive causal relationship with IGF-1 (Vit D: IVW β:0.182, 95% CI: 0.061–0.305, p = 3.25 × 10–3; 25-OHD: IVW β: 0.057, 95% CI = 0.017–0.096, p = 4.73 × 10–3). The sensitivity analysis showed that horizontal pleiotropy was unlikely to bias the causality in this study (MR-Egger: Vit D intercept p = 5.1 × 10–5, 25-OHD intercept p = 6.4 × 10–4 in forward analysis; Vit D intercept p = 6.6 × 10–4, 25-OHD intercept p = 1.9 × 10–3 in reverse analysis), and a leave-one-out analysis did not identify evidence of bias in the results.ConclusionThe results of the MR analysis provide evidence that IGF-1 has positive causal and reverse causal relationships with Vit D and serum 25-OHD, respectively, in European populations. Our findings also provide guidance for the prevention and treatment of short stature and other related diseases.

Lower respiratory tract infections are among the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population worldwide. Despite advances in treatment and prevention, childhood pneumonia is the major reason for hospital admissions and remains a leading cause of death claiming an estimated 800 000 childrens lives in 2018. Globally, over 1.23 million children died of pneumonia before reaching their 5th birthday the equivalent of over 3400 deaths per day worldwide. There is growing evidence that vitamin D plays an important role in the immune system by modulating both innate and adaptive immunity. Vitamin D is an additional factor in the inflammatory response regulation. Its action is mediated via the vitamin D receptor (VDR), which is present in almost all types of immune cells, including activated CD4+ and CD8+ cells, B cells, macrophages, neutrophils and dendritic cells. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with decreased host defenses against infections. Therefore, our aim was to investigate whether low vitamin D status was a risk factor for pneumonia complications, usage of multiple antibiotics and prolonged hospital stay among hospitalized pediatric patients with community-aquired pneumonia. Total of 200 children (102 healthy controls and 98 with severe pneumonia) from 11 days to 17 years old were included in the study. Cases with severe pneumonia were subdivided into groups with and without complications (36 and 62, respectively). Electrochemiluminescence immunoassay was used to measure the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. The control group showed lower values than the study group. Cases with complicated pneumonia had significantly lower levels whitin the range of 29.768.0 nmol/l, compared with 49.188.6 nmol/l in cases without complications. A significant negative correlation was found between vitamin D concentrations and duration of hospital stay, the number of antibiotics used for treatment, and serum levels of inflammatory markers. The low status of vitamin D is related to the severity of the disease but has not been associated with the incidence/frequency of the disease. Children with low vitamin D levels may be at higher risk of developing life-threatening complications, intensive care admissions and a higher inflammatory response.

Context Findings of previous observational studies that examined the association between circulating vitamin D levels and lipid profiles have been inconsistent. Objective A dose-response meta-analysis of epidemiologic studies was conducted to investigate the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and dyslipidemia in adults. Data Sources Electronic databases were searched systematically for articles published up to June 2021. Data Extraction Fifty-seven observational studies and 2 cohort studies that reported odds ratios (ORs) or relative risks (RRs) with 95%CIs for dyslipidemia in relation to serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in adults were included. Data Analysis A high level, vs a low level, of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D was related to a significant 19% decrease in the odds of hypertriglyceridemia (OR 0.81; 95%CI, 0.74–0.89), an 18% reduction in low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (OR 0.82; 95%CI, 0.76–0.89), and an 18% reduction in dyslipidemia (OR 0.82; 95%CI, 0.75–0.91). No significant association was found between a high vs a low level of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and risk of high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels (OR 0.86; 95%CI, 0.62–1.19) or hypercholesterolemia (OR 1.03; 95%CI, 0.93–1.15). Dose-response analyses demonstrated that each 10 ng/mL increase in the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level was linked, respectively, to a 7% (OR 0.93;95%CI, 0.85–1.02), a 3% (OR 0.97; 95%CI, 0.90–1.05), and a 4% (OR 0.96; 95%CI, 0.92–1.00) marginally significant decrease in the odds of hypertriglyceridemia, low HDL-C, and dyslipidemia. Conclusion Higher serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels are associated with significant reductions in the odds of hypertriglyceridemia, low HDL-C, and dyslipidemia in a dose-response trend. Context and purpose: In light of the key roles of vitamin D and calcium in adolescent bone health, there is a critical need for representative data on nutritional status for both micronutrients in teenagers. The present work used data from the recent representative National Teens' Food Survey II (2019–2020) to assess calcium and vitamin D intakes of teenagers in Ireland, including adequacy of such intakes, as well as, for the first time, to characterise serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations and their determinants. Methods: Usual calcium and vitamin D intake estimates were generated using food intake data (via 4-day weighed food records) from a nationally representative sample of teenagers aged 13–18 years in Ireland (n 428). Serum 25(OH)D was measured (via LC–MS/MS) in the 57.5% (n 246) who provided a blood sample. Results: Sixty-seven and 94% of Irish teenagers had intakes of calcium and vitamin D below the respective Estimated Average Requirements values, reflecting a high degree of inadequacy of intake for both micronutrients (and higher in girls than boys; P < 0.001). In addition, 21.7% and 33.1% of teenagers had serum 25(OH)D < 30 nmol/L (risk of vitamin D deficiency) and 30–49.9 nmol/L (inadequacy), respectively. Extended winter sampling, being aged 16–18 years, low total vitamin D intake, being overweight/obese or being of non-white skin type were significant (P < 0.05) predictors of serum 25(OH)D < 30 nmol/L. Objective·To explore the correlation between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and serum allergens in children with atopic dermatitis (AD), and provide a theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of AD. Methods·From November 2017 to February 2019, a total of 165 pediatric patients with AD who visited the Dermatology Department of Shanghai Children′s Medical Center were enrolled in this study. AD severity was assessed according to the severity scoring of atopic dermatitis (SCORAD). Serum total IgE and specific IgE (sIgE) levels of 19 common allergens were detected, and serum25(OH)D was determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. All data were statistically analyzed. Correlation analysis was conducted by spearman's or point-biserial correlation analysis. Chi-square test was used for comparison of count data between groups. Binary linear regression analysis was used to identify the risk factors. Results·SCORAD score was shown to be positively correlated with serum total IgE level, absolute value and percentage of eosinophils in children with AD (r=0.213, P=0.009; r=0.268, P=0.001; and r=0.249, P=0.003, respectively). However, there was no significant correlation between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and SCORAD score in children with AD, while there was a significant negative correlation between the serum 25(OH)D concentrations and the total IgE levels, and the percentage of eosinophils in children with AD (r=-0.212, P=0.011; and r=-0.174, P=0.039, respectively) was shown. In this study, the most common allergens with sIgE grade Ⅲ or above were house dust mite, egg white and cashew nut, followed by crab, cat dander, mixed mold, shrimp, dog dander, house dust and mixed tree pollen from high to low. There was no significant correlation between the number of allergen-positive items and serum 25(OH)D concentrations in children with AD (χ2=6.27, P=0.804). However, AD patients with positive house dust mite and mixed mold were statistically significant in different serum [25(OH) D] groups (P=0.000, and P=0.043, respectively). In addition, univariate logistic regression analysis showed that serum [25(OH)D] levels were risk factor for house dust mite allergy in children with AD. The risk of household dust mite allergy in children with serum 25(OH)D deficiency was 8.196 times than that of children with sufficient serum 25(OH)D (OR=8.196, P=0.000). However, serum [25(OH)D] levels were not the risk factor for house dust mite allergy in children with AD. Conclusion·Serum [25(OH)D] levels might affect the sensitization of children with AD to house dust mite. However, the characteristic hormonal and metabolic features, and the systemic Vitamin D levels, among Saudi women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) remain largely unknown. Aims: This retrospective study aimed to identify the hormonal, metabolic, and Vitamin D status variabilities among infertile Saudi women with PCOS versus those of non-PCOS fertile women as controls. Materials and Methods: The medical records of a total of 99 women (49 PCOS and 50 controls), with matched age and body mass index, were analyzed in this study. For each woman who met the study inclusion criteria, the analyzed parameters included the serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH) D), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), prolactin, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), androgen, total testosterone (TT), estradiol, progesterone, thyroid hormones, the fasting plasma glucose (FPG), and lipid profile concentrations. Results: Compared to the controls, women with PCOS had significantly lower levels of 25(OH) D, SHBG, FSH, and estradiol, but they had significantly higher levels of LH, androgen, TT, FPG, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. There were no differences between the two groups regarding the other parameters. Conclusions: The present findings highlight the prevalence of sex hormones, metabolic, and Vitamin D status disturbances among Saudi women with PCOS. Large-scale retrospective and prospective studies are therefore essential to realize these findings.

Background: Alopecia areata (AA) has been postulated to be an autoimmune disease affecting the hair follicles. Because vitamin D receptors are present in the immune system and hair follicles, vitamin D has been hypothesized to affect the disease. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and the percentage of vitamin D deficiency in AA patients and compare them with those in healthy controls in a Philippine tertiary hospital. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 29 AA patients and 29 healthy controls. The serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were determined using the chemiluminescent immunoassay method. The serum concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], may be used to evaluate vitamin D status, and this has been related to different dietary patterns (DPs) in previous studies. The bioavailability of vitamin D may be affected by adiposity. We aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary patterns and serum 25(OH)D in an Iranian population sample with abdominal obesity. Methods: This cross-sectional study was undertaken in 215 adults who were 30–50 years old, and comprised students and employees of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (MUMS), who had abdominal obesity. Serum 25(OH)D was measured using an enzyme-linked immunoassay method. A 65-item validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and a principal components factor analysis (PCA) method were used to determine major dietary patterns. Results: Two major dietary patterns were identified among the study population using PCA, and were termed “healthy” and “unhealthy”. The healthy dietary pattern was characterized by a high intake of fruits, green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, honey, dairy products, olive oil, nuts, poultry, legumes, and soup and low intake of sugar, tea and solid fats. Background: National and international experts have been attempting to find diagnostic tools for the early identification of symptoms to facilitate early identification and intervention of the disease.Objective: Detection of urine Alzheimer-associated neuronal thread protein (AD7c-NTP) and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD).Methods: Subjects aged >50 years who underwent a physical examination at the Taihu Sanatorium of Jiangsu Province, had no clinical evidence of AD-related issues, and had normal Mini-Mental State Exam and Montreal Cognitive Assessment scores were enrolled in the present study. There were 35 males and 15 females, who were aged 51-91 years. Urine AD7c-NTP levels and serum 25(OH)D concentrations were measured.Results: The Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the urine AD7c-NTP levels in these subjects were negatively correlated with the serum 25(OH)D concentrations (r = -0.460, p < 0.001).Conclusion: Combined with previous studies, it was considered that cognitive function might be the only link for the correlation between AD7c-NTP and 25(OH)D. This finding might provide a starting point to investigate the potential value of the interaction between urine AD7c-NTP and serum 25(OH)D in chronic diseases.
