Background The importance of organic farming has increased through the years to promote food security allied with minimal harm to the ecosystem. Besides the environmental benefits, a recurring problem associated with organic management is the unsatisfactory yield. A possible solution may rely on the soil microbiome, which presents a crucial role in the soil system. Here, we aimed to evaluate the soil bacterial community structure and composition under organic and conventional farming, considering the tropical climate and tropical soil. Methodology Our organic management treatments were composed by composted poultry manure and green manure with Bokashi. Both organic treatments were based on low nitrogen inputs. We evaluated the soil bacterial community composition by high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes, soil fertility, and soil enzyme activity in two organic farming systems, one conventional and the last transitional from conventional to organic. Results We observed that both organic systems evaluated in this study, have higher yield than the conventional treatment, even in a year with drought conditions. These yield results are highly correlated with changes in soil chemical properties and enzymatic activity. The attributes pH, Ca, P, alkaline phosphatase, and β- glucosidase activity are positively correlated with organic systems, while K and Al are correlated with conventional treatment. Also, our results show in the organic systems the changes in the soil bacteria community, being phyla Acidobacteria, Firmicutes, Nitrospirae, and Rokubacteria the most abundant. These phyla were correlated with soil biochemical changes in the organic systems, helping to increase crop yields. Conclusion Different organic management systems, (the so-called natural and organic management systems, which use distinct organic sources), shift the soil bacterial community composition, implying changes in their functionalities. Also, our results contributed to the identification of target bacterial groups and changes in soil chemical properties and enzymatic activity in a trophic organic farming system, which may contribute to higher crop yields.

V letih 2014, 2015 in 2016 smo proučevali vpliv različnih načinov oskrbe vinogradnih tal (ozelenitev tal, uporaba herbicidov v vrsti in po celotni površini, zastiranje tal s slamo in plitva obdelava tal v primerjavi s kontrolo − travnik) na maso in število deževnikov (m2) in njihovo razporeditev glede na globino tal. V vseh terminih vzorčenja je bilo najmanjše število in masa deževnikov v herbicidnem pasu, največje pa v večini terminov v ozelenjenih in s slamo zastrtih tleh, razen v prvem letu poskusa (9. 8. in 13. 10. 2014), ko je bilo največje število deževnikov pri uporabi herbicida po celotnem medvrstnem prostoru (268/m2, 218/m2) in pri vzorčenju 13. 6. 2015, ko je bila v tem obravnavanju tudi največja masa. Pri uporabi herbicida po celotni površini in pri plitvi obdelavi tal smo ugotovili trend zmanjševanja števila in mase deževnikov, kar kaže na poslabšanje razmer v tleh zaradi manjše količine odmrlih rastlinskih ostankov, ki predstavljajo glavno hrano za deževnike. Najvišja temperatura (v poletnih terminih vzorčenja > 25°C) in najmanjša vsebnost vode (od 8,9 % do 11 %), v zgornjem horizontu tal (0–15 cm) je bila pri plitvi obdelavi tal ter herbicidu po celotni površini in v vrsti, zaradi večje izpostavljenosti tal sončnemu sevanju. Najnižjo temperaturo tal v poletnem obdobju (med 14,5 °C in 20,4 °C) in največjo vsebnost vode (14,1 %) pa smo izmerili pri zastirki. In 2014, 2015 and 2016, the impact of different soil management systems (permanent green cover, use of herbicides within the row and entire the surface, straw mulch and shallow soil tillage compared with meadow-control) on the weight and number of earthworms (m2) and their distribution in various horizons of the soil were studied. The lowest number and weight of earthworms in all sampling periods were observed in the herbicidal zone within the rows, while the highest weight and number were found in the permanent green cover and straw mulch several terms, with the exception of two sampling periods in the first year of the experiment (9. 8. and 13. 10. 2014), when the highest number was observed in the treatments with the herbicides use on the entire surface, 268/m2 and 218/m2 respectively, while the sampling on 13. 6. 2015 also revealed the largest weight of earthworms in the same treatment. The use of herbicide on the entire surface and shallow tillage showed a trend of a decreased number and weight of earthworms, which indicates a deterioration of soil conditions and a smaller amount of dead plant residues, which is the main food for earthworms. The highest temperature (in summer sampling periods > 25 °C) and the lowest water content (from 8.9 % to 11 %) were in the upper soil horizon (up to 15 cm deep) in the shallow soil tillage treatments and the use of herbicides within the row and the entire surface, due to increased exposure to solar radiation. The lowest temperature of soil during summer (between 14.5 °C and 20.4 °C) and the highest water content (14.1 %) were measured in the case of straw mulch usage.

As such, there are need to evolve conservation systems which will minimize soil disturbance in sugarcane production thereby preventing soil structure degradation and maintain the soil quality, using appropriate compaction models. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of sugarcane harvesting operation under cover crop management systems and soil tillage practices implemented before sugarcane planting using load-bearing capacity models (LBCM). The experiment was set up in a randomised block design with three soil management systems (no tillage, minimum tillage, and minimum tillage combined with a deep subsoiler) and two crop rotations (peanut and sorghum). Soils samples were collected at three depths before and after sugarcane harvesting. The undisturbed soil samples were submitted to the uniaxial compression test, their precompression stress was determined and, afterwards the load-bearing capacity model for each treatment was developed. The load-bearing capacity models showed soil structure degradation under conventional tillage and pasture management, while there was a recuperative effect of soil structure in crop rotation management. However, peanut as a crop rotation made the soil more susceptible to compaction, regardless of soil tillage treatment. At harvest time, the soil was more susceptible to compaction under the following conditions: in the surface layer, with the use of deep subsoiling and with the use of cover crops (peanuts and sorghum). From a practical point of view, this indicates that the better soil physical condition obtained by soil tillage and the use of cover crops can be wiped out by the harvesting operation, thus traffic control actions (including soil moisture and traffic reduction) need to be adopted. Summary This experiment evaluated the effect of soil management systems in a black currant planting on the generative potential (number of flowers per inflorescence, number of berries per cluster and yield per bush), physical attributes of the cluster and fruit (berry weight and cluster weight) and chemical properties of the fruit (soluble solids content, total sugars, titratable acidity, total anthocyanins, total phenolic content and vitamin C) of black currant cultivars. Three soil management systems were used: treatment I – bare fallow i.e. continuous tillage; treatment II – sawdust mulch, and treatment III – black polyethylene foil mulch. Four black currant cultivars were included - ‘Ben Lomond’, ‘Titania’, ‘Čačanska crna’ and ‘Tiben’. The soil management systems had a significant effect on the tested parameters. The cultivars also showed highly significant differences. Soil management system x cultivar interactions were observed for generative potential, and physical properties of the cluster and fruit, but not for fruit chemical traits, except in the soluble solids content.

CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Apesar do reconhecimento da importância dos microrganismos em sustentar os serviços ecossistêmicos do solo, ainda há pouca compreensão dos processos fundamentais que orientam, mantêm e afetam a diversidade microbiana no solo e o próprio papel da diversidade nos processos do solo, principalmente em razão das alterações dos sistemas de uso e manejo do solo. O objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar a interferência da substituição de floresta de pinus por sistema de plantio direto ao longo dos anos de implantação nos indicadores físicos, químicos e microbiológicos de qualidade do solo, além da interferência na estrutura, composição e abundância de microrganismos em um Latossolo Amarelo ácrico muito argiloso, fase cerrado, nas profundidades de 0,00 - 0,05 e 0,05 - 0,10 m. Para isso foram analisadas as propriedades físicas (textura, densidade do solo, macro e microporos e porosidade total), químicas (pH, P, K, Ca, Mg, Al, (H+Al), COT e N) e microbiológicas (respiração basal, biomassa microbiana, quocientes metabólico e microbiano e atividade das enzimas urease, fosfatase ácida, arilsulfatase e β-glicosidase), além das análises de PCR em tempo real para dados de abundância e PCRDGGE para estudos de estrutura e composição de bactérias, fungos e bactérias diazotróficas. A qualidade do solo é uma função integrada de propriedades físicas, químicas e biológicas. Na conversão de áreas naturais em floresta de pinus, essas propriedades foram impactadas negativamente com a redução do nível nutricional e alteração da estrutura do solo, refletidas em menor biomassa microbiana até 10 cm de profundidade. Os indicares físicos e químicos estudados não foram sensíveis para avaliar o impacto causado pela conversão de floresta de pinus em sistema de plantio direto de até 8 anos de idade. Entretanto, foi confirmado o efeito benéfico da adoção de sistemas mais conservacionistas com melhoria desses indicadores ao longo do tempo. O tempo de implantação do sistema de plantio direto igual a 12 anos foi o que mais se aproximou do Cerrado nos teores de carbono e características físicas do solo, bem como na atividade e biomassa microbianas. Os resultados encontrados neste trabalho refletem a menor qualidade dos solos das áreas convertidas em sistemas de cultivo, porém ressalta a importância da adoção de um sistema mais conservacionista a longo prazo, como o sistema plantio direto. Os fatores químicos analisados nesse estudo, em especial pH, Al e COT, influenciaram diretamente a estrutura, composição e abundância das populações de bactérias e fungos nas profundidades de 0,05 e 0,10 m. Despite the acknowledgement of the importance of microorganisms to sustain the ecosystem services in soil, there’s little comprehension of the fundamental processes which orient, maintain and affect the microbial diversity in soil and the role of the diversity per se in soil processes, especially due to the alterations in the systems for soil usage and management. The objective of the present study was to verify the interference of the substitution of the pinus forest by the direct planting system throughout the years of the implementation, regarding physical, chemical and microbiologic soil quality indicators, and also the interference in the structure, composition and abundance of microorganisms in yellow very argillaceous acric Latosol, in cerrado stage, in the depths of 0,00 – 0,05 and 0,05 – 0,10 m. To do so, an analysis was performed regarding physical properties (texture, soil density, macro and micropores, and total porosity) chemical properties (pH, P, K, Ca, Mg, Al, (H+Al), COT and N) and microbiologic properties (basal respiration, microbial biomass, metabolic and microbial quotients and activity of the enzymes urease, acid phosphatase, arylsulfatase and β-glycosidase) and also analysis of PCR-DGGE for studies of structure and composition of bacteria, fungi and diazotrophic bacteria. Soil quality is a function integrated by physical, chemical and biological properties. In the conversion of natural areas to pinus forests, these properties were negatively impacted with the reduction of the multinutritional level and soil structure alterations, reflected in lower microbial biomass up to 10cm in deepness. The physical and chemical indicators studied were not sensible to evaluate the impact caused by the conversion of pinus forest in direct planting system of up to the age of 8 years. However, it was confirmed the benefic effect by the adoption of more conservationist systems with improvement of these indicators through the time. The time to implement the direct planting system equal to 12 years was the closest one to cerrado in carbon content and the soil physical characteristics and in microbial biomass and activities as well. The results found in this paper reflect the lower soil quality in soils of areas converted in cultivation systems, but it highlights the importance of adopting a more conservationist system in the long term, such as the direct planting system. The chemical factors analyzed in this study, especially pH, A1 and COT, influenced directly the structure, composition and abundance of bacteria and fungi communities in the depths of 0,05 and 0,10 m. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes sistemas de preparo do solo sobre os atributos físicos e químicos e sua relação com o desenvolvimento de raízes da cultura do milho (Zea mays L.). O experimento foi realizado em Campinas (SP), Brasil. As amostragens foram realizadas no ano agrícola de 1990/1991 após oito anos de implantação do experimento, quando o campo estava cultivado com milho cultivar C-606. Os sistemas de preparo avaliados foram: semeadura direta, preparo com escarificador e preparo convencional, em parcelas de 7,5 m x 15,0 m com três repetições para cada um dos sistemas de preparo. Os atributos físicos e químicos avaliados foram: densidade do solo, resistência do solo à penetração, infiltração, condutividade hidráulica, matéria orgânica (MO), fósforo (P), potássio (K), cálcio (Ca), magnésio (Mg), pH e saturação por bases (V%). A densidade de raízes de milho foi determinada por meio do método de tradagem. O solo sob semeadura direta proporcionou melhores condições gerais de fertilidade de 0,0-0,1 m de profundidade, comparativamente aos tratamentos com preparo mecânico, e abaixo dessa profundidade o efeito foi inverso. Entretanto, tais diferenças não influenciaram o desenvolvimento radicular das plantas de milho. Os atributos físicos medidos permitiram identificar camadas mais adensadas provocadas pela profundidade e repetição das operações mecânicas para preparo do solo e estas reduziram a densidade de raízes do milho.The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different soil tillage systems on soil physical and chemical attributes and their relationships with root development of maize (Zea mays L.) crop. The experiment was conducted at the Campinas Experimental Center of Instituto Agronômico, located in Campinas, SP, Brazil. The measurements were made during the 1990/91 summer cropping season when the field was cultivated with the cultivar C-606 of mayze crop. The tillage systems evaluated were: no tillage, soil tilled with chisel plow, and conventional soil tillage with disk plow and harrow, in plots measuring 7.5 m by 15.0 m, with three replications each. The soil physical and chemical attributes evaluated were: bulk density, soil penetration resistence, infiltration rate, hydraulic conductivity, organic matter, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, pH and base saturation. The maize crop root density was determined using the auger method. The soil under no tillage showed the best soil fertility of the layer 0,0-0,1 m as compared to the soil tilled treatments. At the layers bellow that depth, the effect was the reverse. However, these differences did not affect the maize crop root development. The measured soil physical attributes allowed the identification of higher density layers caused by depth and repetition of mechanical operations of soil tillage, which contributed to reduce the maize root density.

V diplomskem delu smo proučevali, kako različni načini oskrbe vinogradnih tal (ozelenitev tal, uporaba herbicidov v vrsti in po celotni površini, zastiranje tal s slamo, plitva obdelava tal v primerjavi s travnikom) vplivajo na število in maso deževnikov v različnih horizontih tal (od 0 do 15, 15 do 30, 30 do 45 in 45 do 60 cm). Deževnike smo tudi vizualno razvrstili glede na velikost (mali, srednji, veliki). Poskus je bil izveden v letu 2014 in 2015 v vinogradu v vinorodnem podokolišu Srednje Slovenske gorice (vinogradništvo Breznik, Komarnica v Občini Cerkvenjak) v štirih ponovitvah. Najmanjše število in masa deževnikov je bila v herbicidnem pasu v vseh terminih vzorčenja. V prvem terminu (22. 5. 2014) je bilo največje število deževnikov v ozelenjenih tleh (225/m2), v drugem (13. 10. 2014) in tretjem (9. 8. 2014) terminu pa v obravnavanju herbicid (268/m2) oziroma (218/m2). V vseh terminih v letu 2014 je bila največja masa deževnikov v ozelenjenih tleh. V letu 2015 je bilo pri spomladanskem vzorčenju (13. 6. 2015) največ deževnikov na travniku (kontrola), največja masa deževnikov pa pri uporabi herbicida po celotni površini. Najmanjše število deževnikov v zgornjem horizontu tal do 15 cm globine je bilo v herbicidnem pasu (73/m2), največ pa na travniku izven vinograda (192/m2). Najnižjo temperaturo tal v zgornjem horizontu tal do 15 cm globine smo je bila pri zastirki iz slame (15,3 °C). Najvišja temperatura je bila so bile v plitvo obdelanih tleh (25,5 °C) in pri uporabi herbicida v vrsti (24,0 °C) ter po celotni površini (24,3 °C). In this study we examined how the different soil management systems (the permanent green cover, the use of herbicides within the rows and the entire surface, soil cover with straw, shallow soil tillage compared with lawn) impact on the number and weight of earthworms in various horizons of the soil (0 to 15, 15 to 30, 30 to 45 and 45 to 60 cm). Earthworms were visually classified according to the size (small, medium, large). The experiment was carried out in 2014 and 2015 in a vineyard in the winegrowing region of Srednje Slovenske gorice (Winery Breznik from Komarnica) in four replications. A minimum number and weight of the earthworms was present in the herbicidal zone within rows at all times of sampling. The largest number of earthworms in the permanent green cover (225/m2) was present during the first sampling period (22. 5. 2014). The largest number of earthworm’s in the second (13. 10. 2014) and third (9. 8. 2014) sampling period was in the treatments with the use of herbicides on the entire surface, 268/m2 and 218/m2 respectively. The mass of earthworms in the permanent green cover was largest during all the periods in 2014. In 2015, during the spring sampling (13. 6. 2015), the highest number of earthworms was in the treatment lawn (control) and the highest weight of earthworms was in the treatment with use of herbicide on the entire surface. The lowest number of earthworms in the upper horizon of the soil, up to 15 cm in depth, was in the herbicidal zone within rows (73/m2) and the highest number was on the lawn outside vineyard (192/m2). The lowest temperature of the soil in the upper horizon, down to 15 cm in depth was measured in the straw mulch (15.3 °C). Temperatures were higher in the treatments with the shallow cultivated soil (25.5 °C), the use of herbicides within rows (24 °C) and entire surface (24.3 °C).

A conversão do cerrado nativo em sistemas agropecuários pode alterar com o passar dos anos de cultivo os teores de C e N, bem como o sinal isotópico do δ13C e δ15N do solo. Desta forma, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os teores de C, N e abundância natural de δ13C e δ15N no perfil do solo em uma cronossequência de agricultura sob sistema plantio direto (SPD) no cerrado goiano. Para isso, em Montividiu, GO, foram selecionadas áreas sob SPD com diferentes tempos de implantação: SPD com três anos de implantação (SPD3), SPD com 15 anos de implantação (SPD15) e SPD com 20 anos de implantação (SPD20), as quais foram comparadas com áreas de cerrado nativo (CE) e pastagem (PA). Foram coletadas amostras de solo nas profundidades de 0,00-0,05; 0,05-0,10; 0,10-0,20; 0,20-0,30; 0,30-0,40; 0,40-0,50; 0,50-0,60; 0,60-0,80; e 0,80-1,00 m. O solo das áreas de estudo foi classificado como Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico. O manejo do solo sob SPD após 20 anos aumentou os teores de C e N na camada superficial do solo (0,00-0,05 m), em relação às outras áreas avaliadas. Nas demais profundidades avaliadas, observou-se que está ocorrendo aumento nos teores C e N com o passar dos anos de adoção do SPD (três para 15 anos); no entanto, tais áreas ainda não foram capazes de recuperar os teores desses elementos em relação à vegetação nativa de CE. Por meio dos resultados de δ13C, pôde-se constatar que a origem da MOS nas áreas de SPD é referente à plantas do ciclo fotossintético C4. Verificou-se que até os 0,30 m do perfil do solo os resultados de δ13C estão reduzindo com o passar dos anos de adoção do SPD. Os menores e maiores valores de δ15N foram encontrados nas áreas de CE e PA, SPD3, enquanto SPD15 e SPD20 apresentaram valores intermediários de δ15N, em relação às demais áreas avaliadas. The conversion of native vegetation in agricultural systems can change with over the years of growing levels of C and N as well as the isotopic signal of 13C and 15N of soil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the contents of C and N and the natural abundance of δ13C and δ15N in the soil profile in a chronosequence of no-tillage agriculture (NT) in the Cerrado (tropical savanna) of Goias (GO), Brazil. For this purpose, areas under NT in Montividiu (GO) with the following characteristics were selected: three years under NT (NT3), fifteen years under NT (NT15), and 20 years under NT (NT20). They were compared to areas of native vegetation (CE) and pasture (PA). Soil samples were collected at depths of 0.00-0.05, 0.05-0.10, 0.10-0.20, 0.20-0.30, 0.30-0.40, 0.40-0.50, 0.50-0.60, 0.60-0.80, and 0.80-1.00 m. The soil of the studied area was classified as a Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico (Oxisol). Soil management in NT after 20 years increased the C and N contents in the surface soil layer (0.00-0.05 m) in relation to other areas assessed. In the other depths evaluated, there has been an increase in C and N contents according to the years since adoption of NT (3 to 15 years); however, these areas have not yet been able to recover the contents of these elements in relation to native vegetation (CE). From the δ13C, it can be seen that the origin of soil organic matter (SOM) in the NT areas is related to plants of the C4 photosynthetic pathway. However, it was found that up to 0.30 m depth, the δ13C have been decreasing over the years since adoption of NT. The lowest values of δ15N were found in the areas of CE and PA, and the highest values were found in NT3, while the NT15 and NT20 areas had intermediate values of δ15N compared to the other areas assessed.

Mudanças no uso e manejo do solo podem alterar o equilíbrio dinâmico do seu sistema e determinar alterações químicas e mineralógicas. Este estudo foi realizado em experimentos de longa duração (10 e 27 anos) e teve por objetivo avaliar o uso do solo com lavoura, sem e com aplicação de cama de aves (PDSC e PDCC), e com pastagem nativa com deposição de dejetos bovinos (PT), sobre atributos químicos e mineralógicos de um Argissolo Vermelho do sul do Brasil, em relação ao mesmo solo sob campo nativo (CN). Nos quatro tratamentos, o solo foi amostrado nas profundidades 0,0-2,5 e 2,5-5,0 cm. Na fração TFSA (ø < 2 mm), foram avaliadas as características químicas das fases sólida e líquida e a área superficial específica (ASE). A fração argila (ø < 0,002 mm) na camada 0,0-2,5 cm do solo foi analisada por difração de raios-X (DRX), após tratamentos para identificação e caracterização dos argilominerais 2:1. A adição de dejetos animais aumentou o teor de C orgânico total (COT) e a área superficial específica (ASE) do solo, na camada de 0,0-2,5 cm. Em comparação ao CN, a adição de cama de aves (PDCC) aumentou os teores de Ca e CTCpH7, enquanto a deposição de dejetos bovinos (PT) incrementou os teores de P e K. Na solução do solo, os teores de C orgânico dissolvido evidenciaram relação positiva com os teores de COT. Com relação ao CN, o uso do solo com lavoura (PDSC e PDCC) praticamente não alterou os elementos químicos em solução. Já com uso de PT, aumentaram-se os teores da maioria dos elementos químicos em solução, com destaque para os teores de Fe, Al e Si. Ainda no PT, diminuíram-se os teores de Fe e Al relativos aos óxidos de Fe pedogênicos, indicando dissolução redutiva/complexativa de formas cristalinas. Na análise por DRX na argila, o PT evidenciou diminuição da intensidade e área das reflexões relativas aos argilominerais 2:1, fato que associado à maior atividade do Al e Si na solução do solo sugere a dissolução de argilominerais no solo sob pastagem com deposição de dejetos bovinos. Changes in land use and management can affect the dynamic equilibrium of soil systems and induce chemical and mineralogical alterations. This study was based on two long-term experiments (10 and 27 years) to evaluate soil used for notillage maize cultivation, with and without poultry litter application (NTPL and NTM), and with grazed native pasture fertilized with cattle droppings (GrP), on the chemical and mineralogical characteristics of a Rhodic Paleudult in Southern Brazil, in comparison with the same soil under native grassland (NGr). In the four treatments, soil was sampled from the 0.0-2.5 and 2.5-5.0 cm layers. In the air-dried fine soil (ADFS) fraction (ø < 2 mm), chemical characteristics of solid and liquid phases and the specific surface area (SSA) were evaluated. The clay fraction (ø < 0.002 mm) in the 0.0-2.5 cm layer was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) after treatments for identification and characterization of 2:1 clay minerals. Animal waste application increased the total organic C concentration (COT) and specific surface area (SSA) in the 0.0-2.5 cm layer. In comparison to NGr, poultry litter application (NTPL) increased the concentrations of Ca and CECpH7, while cattle droppings (GrP) increased the P and K concentrations. In the soil solution, the concentration of dissolved organic C was positively related with COT levels. With regard to NGr, the soil use with crops (NTM and NTPL) had practically no effect on the chemical elements in solution. On the other hand, the concentrations of most chemical elements in solution were higher in GrP, especially of Fe, Al and Si. The Fe and Al concentrations in the soil iron oxides were lower, indicating reductive/ complexive dissolution of crystalline forms. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of clay in the GrP environment showed a decrease in intensity and reflection area of the 2:1 clay minerals. This fact, along with the intensified Al and Si activity in soil solution indicate dissolution of clay minerals in soil under cattle-grazed pasture fertilized with animal droppings.

A elevada produção de dejeto líquido de suínos faz do solo a principal alternativa para a sua utilização na forma de fertilizante orgânico. Contudo, a adição de resíduos orgânicos nos sistemas de manejo do solo é um fator que pode influenciar a biota do solo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influencia da aplicação de doses de dejeto líquido de suíno na fauna do solo em diferentes sistemas de cultivos. O trabalho foi desenvolvido em área experimental no município de Taquaruçu do Sul, RS. O delineamento foi em blocos casualisados em arranjo fatorial (2x5), sendo dois sistemas de manejo do solo (mínimo e plantio direto) e cinco doses (0, 20, 40, 80m³ ha-1 de dejeto líquido de suíno e adubação química) com quatro repetições. As coletas da fauna edáfica foram realizadas com armadilhas tipo PROVID, em parcelas de 22,5m². Avaliou-se o total de grupos, colêmbolos, ácaros, abundância, riqueza, índice dominância de Simpson, diversidade de Shannon e o índice de Pielou. Os resultados indicam que o sistema plantio direto associado a 40 e 80m³ ha-1 resultam em maior abundância de organismos, ocasionada pelo maior número de colêmbolos. A população de ácaros é maior no cultivo mínimo, em comparação ao sistema plantio direto na dose de 80m³ ha-1. No sistema plantio direto, a dominância de Simpson aumenta e a diversidade de Shannon diminui com a elevação das doses de dejeto líquido de suíno. The high production of liquid pig slurry makes the soil, the main alternative to its use as an organic fertilizer. However, the addition of organic residues in soil management systems is a factor that may influence the soil biota. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of dose application of liquid swine manure on soil biota in different cropping systems. The study was conducted in the experimental area located in the Taquaruçu do Sul. The design was a randomized block factorial arrangement (2x5), two soil management (minimum and no tillage) and five doses (0, 20, 40, 80m³ ha-1 of liquid swine slurry and chemical fertilizer - ROLAS) with four replications. Sampling of soil biota was carried out with PROVID traps in plots of 22.5m². It was evaluated the total group, springtails, mites, abundance, richness, Simpson’s index, Shannon’s diversity and Pielou’s index. The results indicate that no tillage system associated with 40 and 80m³ ha-1 resulted in a greater abundance of organisms, caused by the greater number of springtails. The mite population is larger in minimum tillage compared to no tillage at a rate of 80m³ ha-1. In no-tillage increases the dominance of Simpson and Shannon diversity decreases with increasing levels of liquid swine manure.

O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar, em área com vinte anos (1985-2005) de estudo de sistemas de manejo de solo, na Universidade Estadual Paulista, Campus de Botucatu (SP), a resposta do milho à produtividade, características agronômicas e eficiência de uso de nitrogênio (N), em função da adubação nitrogenada em cobertura, nos sistemas de preparo convencional e plantio direto. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, com quatro repetições. As parcelas foram representadas por preparo convencional do solo e plantio direto e as subparcelas por doses de adubação nitrogenada em cobertura (0 kg ha-1, 40 kg ha-1, 80 kg ha-1, 120 kg ha-1 e 160 kg ha-1). A adubação nitrogenada de cobertura promoveu acréscimos significativos nas características agronômicas e nutricionais do milho, com a produtividade máxima de grãos obtida com 151 kg ha-1 de N. Nas doses de 90 kg ha-1 e 145 kg ha-1 de N em cobertura, os valores da eficiência agronômica e de recuperação foram semelhantes, para o preparo convencional do solo e plantio direto, respectivamente. Nitrogen is the nutrient most required by the maize crop, being often the most limiting one to grain yield. This research aimed to evaluate maize response to yield, agronomic traits, and efficiency of nitrogen (N) use, in relation to nitrogen topdressing, under conventional and no-tillage systems, in an area where soil management systems have been studied for twenty years (1985-2005), in the Universidade Estadual Paulista, in Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in a split-plot arrangement, with four replications. The plots consisted of conventional and no-tillage systems and the subplots comprised topdressing nitrogen doses (0 kg ha-1, 40 kg ha-1, 80 kg ha-1, 120 kg ha-1, and 160 kg ha-1). The nitrogen topdressing promoted significant increases in maize agronomic and nutritional traits, with maximum grain yield obtained with 151 kg ha-1 of N. For the 90 kg ha-1 and 145 kg ha-1 nitrogen topdressing doses, the agronomic and recovery efficiency values were similar, when considered the conventional and no-tillage systems, respectively. The grain yield and maize agronomic and nutritional traits were not affected by soil management system. Quando implantado de modo eficiente, a semeadura direta beneficia o solo e as culturas. No Brasil, a maioria dos estudos com plantio direto concentra-se no Sul e no Centro-Oeste, carecendo de informações sobre esse sistema de manejo do solo no ambiente da região Nordeste. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência da semeadura direta na produtividade do milho em agricultura de sequeiro na região Nordeste do Brasil, em um experimento conduzido em Alagoinha-PB durante sete anos. As culturas do milho (Zea mays) e do guandu (Cajanus cajan) foram implantadas em três sistemas de manejo: milho em cultivo convencional (CC), milho em semeadura direta (SD), milho em semeadura direta com guandu intercalar (SG), na presença e ausência de adubação com N, P e K. As amostras de solo foram coletadas no início e no final do experimento, sendo determinados a densidade do solo e de partículas, a porosidade total, o diâmetro médio ponderado de agregados secos e úmidos e o índice de estabilidade de agregados. Também foram quantificadas a percentagem de cobertura do solo e a produtividade de grãos de milho. A porosidade do solo e a estabilidade de agregados foram menores após o período avaliado. A cobertura do solo aumentou significativamente, chegando a cobrir 96 % da área nos sistemas SD e SG, no início do desenvolvimento da cultura. A adubação e os sistemas SD e SG influenciaram positivamente na produtividade do milho. A precipitação pluvial foi o fator que causou maior variabilidade nos resultados ao longo do estudo. When efficiently introduced, no-tillage system benefices soil and crops. In Brazil, no-tillage studies are concentrated in South and Center-west regions, being necessary information about it in Northeast region. The aim of this study was to evaluate the no-tillage influence on maize yield under rainfed agriculture in Northeast Brazil, in an experiment conducted during seven years. The crops of maize (Zea mays) and pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) were used in three soil management systems: maize in conventional tillage (CC), maize in no-tillage (SD), maize in no-tillage plus pigeon pea sowed in the interrow (SG), with presence and absence of mineral N, P and K fertilization. Soil samples were collected at the beginning and the end of the experiment to determine soil bulk density, soil particle density, total porosity, dry and wet mean weight aggregate diameters and aggregate stability index. It was also quantified soil cover rate and maize yield. The soil porosity and aggregate stability were lower after the study period. Soil coverage increased significantly, about 96 % of the area under SD and SG systems, early in the culture development. Mineral fertilization and no-tillage systems highly influenced the maize yield. The rainfall was the factor that caused greater variability on the results of this study.

O sistema de plantio direto (SPD) representa uma interferência importante no sistema solo, sendo pequeno o conhecimento existente sobre sua influência na mineralogia de solos tropicais e subtropicais. Este estudo foi realizado em experimento de campo e teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito da utilização do SPD, por 26 anos, na intercalação de polímeros de hidróxi-Al nas entrecamadas de argilominerais 2:1 HE de um Latossolo Bruno do Sul do Brasil (Guarapuava, PR), em relação ao mesmo solo cultivado em sistema de preparo convencional (SPC). A fração argila (< 2 μm) de amostras de solo superficial (0–0,03 m), coletadas em ambos os sistemas de manejo, foi analisada por difração de raios X (DRX), antes e após tratamento com citrato de sódio visando à identificação e caracterização dos argilominerais 2:1 HE. As características químicas das fases sólida e líquida dos solos também foram avaliadas. O solo em SPD apresentou maiores teores de C orgânico total, cátions trocáveis e de P, bem como maior acidez extraível e maior capacidade de troca de cátions. Na fase líquida, o solo do SPD apresentou maiores valores de condutividade elétrica, C orgânico dissolvido, cátions básicos, Al, Si e S na solução do solo. A atividade do Al em solução foi semelhante nos dois sistemas de manejo, com mais de 90 % da concentração total de Al estando complexado por ligantes orgânicos. A análise dos argilominerais 2:1 por DRX não evidenciou alterações significativas na extensão ou no grau de intercalação de polímeros de hidroxi-Al nas entrecamadas no solo em SPD, em relação ao solo em SPC. A atividade do Al e do Si em solução indicou uma condição de estabilidade para argilominerais 2:1 com entrecamadas parcialmente ocupadas por hidroxi-Al em ambos os sistemas de manejo de solo, o que sugere uma desaceleração no processo de intercalação e uma tendência de transformação dos argilominerais com intercalação extensiva para uma intercalação parcial. No tillage systems significantly influence the soil system, but knowledge about the effects on the mineralogy of tropical and subtropical soils is limited. This study evaluated the long-term effects (26 years) of no-tillage (NT) on aluminum hydroxy-interlayered minerals of a subtropical Oxisol in Southern Brazil (Guarapuava, PR), compared to the same soil under conventional tillage (CT). The clay fraction (< 2 μm) in soil samples of the surface horizons of a field experiment under both management systems was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) to identify and characterize Al hydroxy-interlayered minerals before and after treatment with sodium citrate to remove intra-layer material. Soil liquid (solution) and solid phases were also characterized. The contents of total organic C, exchangeable cations, P, and the values of extractable acidity and cation exchange capacity as well as electrical conductivity and levels of dissolved organic C, basic cations, aluminum, Si, and sulfur in the soil solution were higher in the NT soil. Under both soil management systems, more than 90 % of the total soluble Al was complexed with organic compounds, with similar Al activity. No significant changes were detected by 2:1 clay mineral XRD analyses in terms of extension or intercalation of Al-hydroxy-polymers in the no-tilled in comparison to the conventionally tilled soil. In both soil management systems, Al and Si activities in the soil solution indicated thermodynamic stability of 2:1 clay minerals with partially occupied by hydroxy-Al, suggesting deceleration in the intercalation process and a tendency of transforming clay minerals from extensive into partial intercalation.

Diversas pesquisas têm mostrado desempenho satisfatório do modelo Century no estudo da dinâmica da matéria orgânica do solo (MOS) nas condições edafoclimáticas do Rio Grande do Sul, porém os estoques de N do solo são normalmente superestimados. O objetivo deste estudo foi ajustar parâmetros do modelo Century em relação ao ciclo do N, para torná-lo uma ferramenta útil no estudo da dinâmica do N em nosso meio. As simulações foram realizadas com dados experimentais de um estudo de longa duração instalado em 1985 em um Argissolo Vermelho distrófico da EEA-UFRGS, em Eldorado do Sul (RS). A inicialização do modelo consistiu na entrada de dados de solo, clima e ajuste de variáveis locais relacionadas à adição de N por fixação não simbiótica e parâmetros relativos a perdas de N por volatilização e relação C/N de resíduos de culturas que entram nos compartimentos lento e passivo da MOS. O modelo foi executado por um período de 6.000 anos nas condições do bioma de campos nativos do Sul do Brasil (bioma mesic/subhumid grassland), para obtenção dos estoques estáveis do C orgânico total (COT) e N total (NT) do solo e dos compartimentos de C e N do solo. Com o modelo assim ajustado, simularam-se oito tratamentos (dois tipos de preparo de solo, dois sistemas de cultura e duas doses de N mineral em fatorial 2 x 2 x 2) selecionados do experimento, conforme o histórico d estudo, alterando-se o parâmetro de cultivo CLTEFF(2) (multiplicador para decomposição do compartimento lento), o qual dependeu do potencial de adição de C pelas culturas e do grau de revolvimento do solo. Adicionalmente, foi acrescentado às sequências de eventos de manejo de solo sob preparo convencional um "efeito adicional de cultivo", persistindo por dois meses após cada evento de revolvimento do solo. Esse prolongamento do efeito do revolvimento do solo permitiu melhor ajuste da dinâmica do C no solo sob sistema de preparo convencional, pois refletiu a maior decomposição da MOS observada nas condições locais. De maneira geral, a aplicação do modelo Century com a parametrização proposta demonstrou bom ajuste das estimativas de COT e NT em relação aos valores observados em 1998, evidenciando que o modelo C tem potencial para ser utilizado no planejamento e na definição de estratégias de manejo de solo. However, soil N stocks were usually overestimated in these simulations. The objective of this study was to parameterize the N cycle submodel of Century for a successful use in N dynamic studies in Southern Brazil. For the simulations, data from a long-term study site established in an Acrisol (Argissolo Vermelho distrófico) at EEA-UFRGS (Eldorado Agricultural Experiment Station - UFRGS) in 1985 were used. The initial parameterization included soil and climate properties, non-symbiotic N fixation inputs, N losses by volatilization and C/N ratios of plant residues that enter the slow and passive N pools of SOM. Century was run for a simulation period of 6,000 years to determine the steady state of soil total carbon and nitrogen stocks and the C and N soil compartments for conditions of Southern Brazilian grasslands (mesic biome/subhumid grassland). Subsequently, eight selected treatments (conventional and no-tillage managements, two crop systems and two N levels in factorial combination) were simulated according to historical soil management data, with appropriate changes in the cultivation parameter CLTEFF(2) (slow pool decomposition multiplier), which was affected by crop C inputs and tilling intensity. Additionally, an "enhanced cultivation effect" was included for two months after each plowing event in the conventional soil management schedules. This extension of the tilling effect resulted in a better adjustment of the soil C dynamics in the case of the conventional tillage system, reflecting the higher soil organic matter decomposition under the local conditions. In general, the estimates of the model with the above-mentioned parameterization agreed well with the field data measured in 1998. This indicates the Century model as a feasible tool for the planning and establishment of soil management strategies.

The objective of this study was: in Chapter 3 the relationship of stratification (RE) of C of the soil organic matter (SOM) pools can be an indicator of C sequestration in no-tillage soils? In the chapter 4 the tensile strength of aggregates is affected by the C content of Pedosequence of Latosol with medium and clay texture? in Chapter 5 which is the C balance and the amount of crop residue needed to maintain a stable C balance in a Latosol with a medium and clay texture? The experimental design was a completely randomized 2x2x2 factorial with 12 treatments. Treatments consisted of: a) an Oxisol (Red Latosol) with medium and clayey texture, b) two soil sampling periods (T1 and T2) with one year interval between them, and c) two soil sampling depths (0-5 and 5-20 cm). The soil attributes assessed were: the separation of water stable aggregates classes (19-8, 8-4, 4-2, 2-1, 1-0,5 and 05-0,25 mm), particulate organic carbon (POC), total particulate nitrogen (TPN) in the aggregate classes. Also was determined total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (NT) in the whole sample and in the aggregates sizes classes and tensile strength of aggregates. The relationship of stratification was calculated by dividing the TOC and TN values of 0-5 cm layer by the values of the same attributes of 5-20 cm layer. The C sequestration rate and the stratification ratio changes were calculated by the difference between the T2 values minus T1. The tensile strength was measured in soil aggregates and assessed in 1920 aggregates for each sampling time. Also TOC and NT content were measured in aggregates. The aggregates greater than 8 mm represented more than 70 of the total mass in both the clay and in sandy soil. The relationship of stratification ratio (0-5:5-20 cm) of SOC, TN, POC and TPN soil indicated the improvement of the surface layer. A significant linear relationship between the SR and C sequestration rate in both textural classes showed an increase in C sequestration and was more evident in LV with medium texture. The increase in TOC content resulted in decreased tensile strength (TS) of the aggregates and was more evident in the 0-5 cm layer. The TS showed inverse relationship with the soil density and was higher in the LV medium texture. The rate of sequestration of C was 0.86 for the LV with medium texture and 0.76 Mg ha-1 for the clay texture and to maintain the stable balance of C is required an input of 8.6 Mg ha-1 of crop residues. The results presented confirm the hypothesis of SR to be a sensitive indicator for the rate of carbon sequestration in no-tillage soil. A redução no conteúdo de carbono (C) da camada superficial em direção as camadas mais profundas do solo indica a formação da estratificação no perfil devido à adição contínua de C pelos resíduos orgânicos resultando no enriquecendo a camada superficial do solo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os seguintes assuntos: a) a relação de estratificação (RE) de C dos compartimentos da matéria orgânica do solo (MOS) pode ser um indicador do seqüestro de C no sistema plantio direto. b) a resistência tênsil dos gregados pode ser afetada pelo conteúdo de C em Pedossequencia de Latossolo com textura média e argilosa. c) o balanço de C e a quantidade de resíduos culturais necessária para manter o equilíbrio estável de C em um Latossolo com textura média e argilosa. O delineamento experimental foi um fatorial 2x2x2 inteiramente casualizado com 12 tratamentos. Os tratamentos constituíram-se de: a) um Latossolo Vermelho com textura média e argilosa, duas épocas de amostragem do solo (E1 e E2) com um ano de intervalo entre si e duas profundidades de amostragem (0-5 e 5-20 cm). Os atributos avaliados foram: a separação das classes de agregados do tamisamento úmido (19-8, 8-4, 4-2, 2-1, 1-0,5 e 05-0,25 mm), o carbono orgânico particulado (COP), o nitrogênio total particulado (NTP) nas classes de agregado, o C orgânico total (COT) e o nitrogênio total (NT) na amostra integral e nas classes de agregados e a resistência tênsil dos agregados. A relação de estratificação (RE) foi calculada dividindo-se o valor de COT e NT da camada de 0-5 cm pelo valor na camada 5-20 cm. A taxa de seqüestro de C e a variação da relação de estratificação foram calculadas através da diferença (D) entre os valores da E2 menos o da E1. A resistência tênsil (RT) do solo foi avaliada em 1920 agregados de cada época de coleta, determinando-se, também o conteúdo de COT e NT. A classe de agregado > 8 mm representou mais de 70% da massa dos agregados tanto na textura argilosa como na arenosa. Da mesma forma, o conteúdo de COT e NT foram maiores na classe de agregado > do que 4 mm comparado as demais classes nas duas classes texturais. A relação de estratificação 5:5-20 cm) de COT, NT, COP e NTP do solo indicou a melhoria da qualidade do solo da camada superficial. A relação linear e significativa entre o DRE com a taxa de seqüestro de carbono nas duas classes texturais mostrou o aumento no seqüestro de C e foi mais evidente no LV com textura média. O incremento do conteúdo de COT resultou na diminuição da resistência tênsil (RT) dos agregados e foi mais evidente na camada de 0-5 cm. A RT apresentou relação inversa com a densidade do solo e foi superior no LV textura média. A taxa de seqüestro de C foi de 0,86 para o LV textura média e 0,76 Mg ha-1 para o textura argilosa e para manter o equilíbrio estável de C é necessário o aporte de 8,6 Mg ha-1 de resíduos culturais. Os resultados apresentados confirmaram a hipótese da RE ser um indicador sensível para a taxa de seqüestro de carbono no solo em um sistema sob plantio direto consolidado.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes sistemas de preparo do solo sobre os atributos físicos e químicos e sua relação com o desenvolvimento de raízes da cultura do milho (Zea mays L.). O experimento foi realizado em Campinas (SP), Brasil. As amostragens foram realizadas no ano agrícola de 1990/1991 após oito anos de implantação do experimento, quando o campo estava cultivado com milho cultivar C-606. Os sistemas de preparo avaliados foram: semeadura direta, preparo com escarificador e preparo convencional, em parcelas de 7,5 m x 15,0 m com três repetições para cada um dos sistemas de preparo. Os atributos físicos e químicos avaliados foram: densidade do solo, resistência do solo à penetração, infiltração, condutividade hidráulica, matéria orgânica (MO), fósforo (P), potássio (K), cálcio (Ca), magnésio (Mg), pH e saturação por bases (V%). A densidade de raízes de milho foi determinada por meio do método de tradagem. O solo sob semeadura direta proporcionou melhores condições gerais de fertilidade de 0,0-0,1 m de profundidade, comparativamente aos tratamentos com preparo mecânico, e abaixo dessa profundidade o efeito foi inverso. Entretanto, tais diferenças não influenciaram o desenvolvimento radicular das plantas de milho. Os atributos físicos medidos permitiram identificar camadas mais adensadas provocadas pela profundidade e repetição das operações mecânicas para preparo do solo e estas reduziram a densidade de raízes do milho. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different soil tillage systems on soil physical and chemical attributes and their relationships with root development of maize (Zea mays L.) crop. The experiment was conducted at the Campinas Experimental Center of Instituto Agronômico, located in Campinas, SP, Brazil. The measurements were made during the 1990/91 summer cropping season when the field was cultivated with the cultivar C-606 of mayze crop. The tillage systems evaluated were: no tillage, soil tilled with chisel plow, and conventional soil tillage with disk plow and harrow, in plots measuring 7.5 m by 15.0 m, with three replications each. The soil physical and chemical attributes evaluated were: bulk density, soil penetration resistence, infiltration rate, hydraulic conductivity, organic matter, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, pH and base saturation. The maize crop root density was determined using the auger method. The soil under no tillage showed the best soil fertility of the layer 0,0-0,1 m as compared to the soil tilled treatments. At the layers bellow that depth, the effect was the reverse. However, these differences did not affect the maize crop root development. The measured soil physical attributes allowed the identification of higher density layers caused by depth and repetition of mechanical operations of soil tillage, which contributed to reduce the maize root density.

With this research work the quantitative estimation of soil organic matter dynamics, water and nitrogen use efficiencies in wheat-wheat and vetch-wheat (where vetch is green manured at 10 % flowering stage) rotation systems will be compared by using 13C and 15N techniques. Specific objectives of this research work includes a) to find out the water and nitrogen use by wheat in vetch-wheat rotation, thus to find out the soil moisture conservation , b) to find out the influence of the soil organic matter by green manuring of vetch, c) to trace the quantitative soil carbon change in vetch-wheat rotation in the long run d) to find out the effects of different irrigation and N fertilization rates to wheat yields, water and nitrogen use efficiencies by using neutron probe water balance method and 15N techniques, respectively, d) to find out the N2-fixation (using isotope dilution method) of vetch in vetch-wheat rotation. Significantly higher grain and stover wheat yields were obtained in the first year when irrigation was done and the N rate was increased. Nitrogen use efficiency of wheat increased with irrigation. Also, the N2- fixation of vetch at 10 % flowering (just before plowing down into the soil) in vetch-wheat rotation had been quantified by using wheat as reference crop. As expected with higher N rates and no irrigation less N2- fixation was obtained. Soil 13C analysis were done by IAEA Seibersdorf laboratoiy on the soil samples taken from different depths.of all treatments for the first year experiments. In the begining of the second year (October 2005) wheat was the only crop sown in both rotations. Soil moisture readings, were done every month and are still continuing. The harvest of wheat will be relaized in July 2006. Then we will have the wheat dry matter yields (both grain and stover), also the total nitrogen and 15N analysis will be done on the wheat plant samples that will be taken at harvest, and thus we will have the second year data on nitrogen and water use of wheat. Also, soil samples will be collected from different depths for 13C analysis. After all the data for the second year are obtained and analyzed the conclusions drawn will be reported.

A qualidade física de solos agrícolas pode ser afetada pelo sistema de manejo, sendo a magnitude das alterações dependente do tempo de uso do solo e das condições edafoclimáticas. Neste estudo, avaliou-se o efeito de longo prazo (21 anos) dos sistemas de preparo convencional (PC) e plantio direto (PD) sobre propriedades físicas da camada de 0-0,2 m de um Latossolo Bruno alumínico câmbico (629 g kg-1 de argila), em Guarapuava (PR). Em relação à área sob mata nativa, contígua ao experimento e tomada como referência, o cultivo do solo em PC resultou não só no aumento da densidade global (Ds), na resistência do solo à penetração (RP) e na temperatura do solo, mas também na diminuição do diâmetro médio geométrico dos agregados (DMG). A adoção do sistema PD promoveu uma melhoria nas propriedades físicas do solo em comparação ao PC, evidenciada pela diminuição de 9 % (de 1,08 para 0,99 Mg m-3) na Ds em subsuperfície (0,1-0,2 m), de 13 % (de 27,9 para 24,7 ºC) nas temperatura máximas (15 h), na camada de 0-0,05 m; e pelo aumento de 126 % (de 1,6 para 3,7 mm) no DMG dos agregados na superfície do solo (0-0,05 m), e de 26 % (de 0,38 m3 m-3 para 0,48 m3 m-3) no conteúdo de água volumétrica de 0-0,1 m. Por outro lado, o PC e o PD não se diferenciaram quanto aos seus efeitos na porosidade do solo (total, macro e micro), na condutividade hidráulica saturada, na resistência do solo à penetração e no grau de floculação de argila. O rendimento das culturas de soja (18 safras) e milho (4 safras) foi, respectivamente, 42 e 22 % superior em PD do que em PC, o que, possivelmente, reflete a melhoria na qualidade física do solo. Soil management affects the soil physical quality, but the magnitude of the changes is dependent of use time and regional edaphoclimatic conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the long-term (21 yr) effect of conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT) systems on some physical properties in the 0.2 m top layer of an Oxisol from Paraná, southern Brazil. In comparison with an adjacent forest soil used as reference, the use of CT system increased the soil bulk density, penetrometer resistance and soil temperature; and decreased the mean geometric diameter of soil aggregates The main changes in soil attributes by using NT in comparison with CT were: decrease in soil bulk density in subsurface layer (0.1- 0.2 m) from 1.08 to 0.99 Mg m-3; decrease in maximum soil temperature in the 0-0.05 m layer from 27.9 to 24.7 ºC; increase in mean geometric diameter of soil aggregates from 1.6 to 3.7 mm at 0-0.05 m layer; and increase in volumetric soil water content in the 0-0.1 m layer from 0.38 to 0.48 m3 m-3. However, there were no differences between effects of tillage systems on soil porosity (total, macro and microporosity), saturated hydraulic conductivity, penetrometer resistance, and clay flocculation degree. The amelioration of physical properties in no-tilled soil may be related to increases of 42% in soybean and 22% in corn yields in this conservation tillage system, in comparison with CT system.

Três sistemas de manejo do solo em cultura do milho (cultivo convencional, cultivo reduzido e plantio direto) foram comparados do ponto de vista de consumo de combustível e rendimento operacional, mediante a análise de resultados de experimentos realizados em campo de produção da Estação Experimental de Jundiaí, com duração de cinco anos (de 1978/79 a 1982/83). A produtividade, também objeto de análise, foi tomada como fator condicionante. Não foram constatadas diferenças significativas entre os três sistemas quanto à produtividade, tendo, porém, os mesmos diferido entre si quanto ao consumo de combustível e rendimento operacional. O sistema que apresentou menor consumo e exigiu o menor número de horas de trabalho por hectare foi o plantio direto, seguido pelos cultivos reduzido e convencional. O desempenho satisfatório de um cultivador de discos inicialmente desenvolvido para o plantio direto tomou desnecessário o uso de herbicidas na fase de pós-plantio, prática normalmente empregada no plantio direto. O fato de os sistemas de manejo terem diferido entre si quanto ao consumo de combustível e rendimento operacional indica que esses fois fatores podem ser considerados numa análise mais ampla para a escolha de um deles.Three crop production systems (namely conventional, reduced tillage and no-till) were compared as to yields, fuel consumption, and number of machine hours per hectare in a five-year experiment (1979/80 to 1982/83) carried out at the Experiment Station in Jundiaí, State of São Paulo, Brazil. No significant differences among treatments were detected in the yields, althought they came up in fuel consumption and number of machine hours. The performance of a disc cultivator was also evaluated. The no-till system showed the least values for fuel consumption and number of machine hours, while the reduced tillage showed intermediate results and the conventional system the highest values. The dísc cultivator in the no-till system demonstrated the possibility of eliminating the use of herbicides in the inter-row cultivation. Once the three systems showed significant differences in fuel consumption and number of machine hours per hectare but not in the yields, both factors could be taken in consideration in the adoption of one of the systems evaluated.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the abundance of soil and surface litter fauna in the western region of Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil, in the following land use systems (LUS): no-tillage crops (NT), integrated crop-livestock (ICL), pasture (PA), Eucalyptus plantation (EP) and native forest fragments (NF). Sampling was done in three counties in the western region of Santa Catarina: Xanxerê, Chapecó and São Miguel do Oeste, in two seasons (winter and summer). The evaluation of soil/litter fauna in each LUS was performed by installing nine "pitfall traps" per sampling grid (3 x 3). The counties are true replicas. The soil for the chemical attributes was collected at the same sampling points for soil fauna. Altogether, 17 taxa were identified in the five LUS. The presence of groups of fauna was influenced by the type of soil management used. The LUS NF and EP provide better soil conditions for the development of a higher diversity of soil fauna groups compared to other LUS, which showed varying degrees of human intervention, regardless of the sampling season (winter or summer). However, annual crop systems NT and ICL groups showed greater richness and total abundance when compared to the perennial systems (EP and PA). Principal component analysis is an important tool in the study of biological indicators of sustainability because it allows use of soil attributes (chemical and physical) as explanatory environmental variables, which helps in the interpretation of ecological data. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a abundância da fauna do solo e da serrapilheira na região oeste do estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil, nos seguintes sistemas de uso do solo (SUS): culturas sob plantio direto (NT), integração lavoura-pecuária (ILP), pastagem (PA), reflorestamento de eucalipto (EP) e fragmentos de floresta nativa (NF). As amostragens foram realizadas em três municípios da região oeste de Santa Catarina: Xanxerê, Chapecó e São Miguel do Oeste, em duas estações (inverno e verão). A avaliação da fauna do solo e da liteira em cada SUS foi realizada instalando-se nove armadilhas do tipo "Ptifall traps" em um grid amostral (3 x 3). Os municípios são as réplicas verdadeiras. O solo para a análise química foi coletado nos mesmos pontos da fauna. No total, foram identificados 17 táxons nos cinco SUS. A presença de grupos da fauna do solo foi influenciada pelo manejo de solo utilizado. Os SUS NF e EP apresentaram as melhores condições para o desenvolvimento de uma maior diversidade de grupos da fauna edáfica, comparados aos outros sistemas de uso do solo, que mostraram diferentes graus de intervenção humana, independentemente da época de amostragem (inverno ou verão). No entanto, os sistemas de cultivo anual NT e ILP apresentaram maior riqueza de grupos e abundância total, comparados aos sistemas perenes (EP e PA). A análise de componentes principais é uma importante ferramenta nos estudos de indicadores de sustentabilidade, pois ajudam na interpretação dos dados ecológicos.
