Background: This article aimed to compile and summarize clinically relevant literature in radiation therapy, and to discuss the potential in radioresistant and radiosensitive head and neck cancer. Study Design: Narrative review. Materials and methods: Google Scholar, PubMed and the Cochrane Library were retrieved using combined key words such as "radiotherapy" and "head and neck cancer". Search strings additionally queried were "radioresistant", "radiosensitive", "head and neck region", "squamous cell carcinoma", in combination with Boolean Operators 'AND' and 'OR'. Subsequently, the resulting publications were included for review of the full text. Results: Radiotherapeutic response currently in clinical observation referred to HNSCC scoping were selected into this review. The compiled mechanisms were then detailed concerning on the clinical significance, biological characteristics, and molecular function. Conclusions: Brachytherapy or/and external-beam radiotherapy are crucial for treating HNSCC, especially the early stage patients, but in patients with locally advanced tumors, their outcome with radiation therapy is poor due to obvious radioresistance. The curative effects mainly depend on the response of radiation therapy, so an updated review is needed to optimize further applications in HNSCC radiotherapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Orbital exenteration performed to treat various neoplasms or nonmalignant diseases results in functional, aesthetic, and psychological issues for the patients. If reconstructive surgery is not possible or not desired by the patient, an orbital prosthesis is an excellent choice for cosmetic and psychological rehabilitation. An orbital prosthesis is aesthetic, durable, long lasting, cost-effective, and most importantly retentive. The present case report describes the rehabilitation of an orbital exenteration postsquamous cell carcinoma using a two-part prosthesis, in which retention is achieved by a combination of relining of anatomic undercuts and magnets. Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSSC) is one of the most common skin cancers and can lead to patient death. Early detection of node metastasis is a major goal for dermatologists and oncologists. The procedure sentinel lymph node biopsy has been proposed to improve early detection of node metastasis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and impact of this technique on the prognosis of cSSC. A total of 37 patients (Saint Louis Hospital, Paris, France) who had undergone sentinel lymph node biopsy and 290 cases from the literature were analysed. The mean rate of positive sentinel lymph node biopsy was 0.14 [95% CI 0.09–0.22]. However, relapse-free survival and overall survival were not affected by sentinel lymph node status (log-rank test; p = 0.08 and p = 0.31, respectively), suggesting that this procedure is not mandatory in the management of cSSC.

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is important in the management of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Disease-specific questionnaires exist, but with important shortcomings. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a questionnaire suitable for use in all patients with BCC and those with SCC. In a 4-phase trajectory, a preliminary questionnaire was created and population-based testing (1,173 patients) carried out. The questionnaire was reduced using exploratory factor analysis and item response theory. Individual item performance was assessed using classical test theory. A total of 721 patients completed the questionnaire. The number of items was reduced to 16, covering 5 scales. Confirmatory factor analysis showed a good fit. Cronbach�s ?s (range 0.67�0.82) were reasonable to high with good internal consistency. In conclusion, the Basal and Squamous Cell Carcinoma Quality of Life questionnaire has good face, content and construct validity. It is useful in the wide range of BCC and SCC patients and captures HRQoL impact over different time-frames.

Actinic keratoses (AKs) are highly dynamic lesions and AK activity has been shown to be associated with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). We sought to explore risk factors which may affect the 12-month turnover of AKs in organ transplant recipients (OTRs). The number of incident AKs, regressed AKs and net change in AK counts were calculated. Negative binomial regression and Poisson regression models were used to estimate rate ratios (RR) for these 3 outcomes. Among 150 renal and 89 liver OTRs, those who spent > 50% of a typical weekday in the sun had a lower rate of AK regression than those who spent minimal time in the sun during a typical weekday. Age, parents’ country of origin, hair colour, skin cancer history and recent AK treatment were all significantly associated with AK turnover. Clinically, these risk factors may be used to monitor OTRs at increased risk of SCC.

We investigate the epidemiology and outcomes of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) from the Australasian EB registry cohort. Seventeen out of 49 (34.6%) RDEB patients developed at least one SCC. Data detailing SCC was obtainable from 16/17 RDEB-SCC patients. A total number of 161 primary SCCs occurred in 16 RDEB-SCC patients with a mean of 10 SCCs per person. The earliest age of first SCC development was 16 years. Eleven out of 16 RDEB-SCC patients eventually developed metastatic SCCs. The majority of the tumours were well and moderately differentiated. The cumulative risk of SCC development by age 35 was 76.1% for RDEB-Generalized Severe (RDEB-GS) and 10% for RDEB-Generalized Intermediate (RDEB-GI). Amongst those who developed SCCs, their median time to death after first SCC was 5 years for RDEB-GI and 4 years for RDEB-GS. This is the first retrospective study of RDEB-SCC in Australasia.

In the actual pandemic context, cancer patients are at additional risk, and protocols are always changing. We present the case of a 62-year-old patient who develops three types of cancer over four years and who was admitted to the hospital in the Emergency Room for hematemesis, melena, and abdominal pain. We know from the pathological antecedents that he was operated in 2017 for a left scapular tumour (basal cell carcinoma). The current clinical examination reveals another right scapular tumour (malignant melanoma), and the hematemesis comes from a gastro-esophageal junction tumour (squamous cell carcinoma). SARS CoV2 infection changes the rules of treatment in such a case. Thus, the patient is operated for the right scapular tumour, the gastrectomy being delayed due to the lung lesions given by SARS CoV2. Background: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are the most frequent skin cancers with a continuous increasing incidence and a cause of economic impact. Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is known as the gold-standard of treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer. Methods: The files of the patients treated with MMS were analysed during a 6 year period (2014-2019) and demographic information was extracted in addition to the information on tumor histology, localization of tumors, number of stages required for a complete removal of the tumors, and the evolution of the patients. We also analysed the information regarding the number and type of reconstructions performed. Results: Over the course of 6 years, 1,356 cutaneous tumors were treated in our clinic by means of MMS. BCC represented 80.5%, SCC 17.6%, and other tumors such as melanoma in situ, DFSP, Extramammary Paget's Disease - being 1.9% of the number of other treated tumors. During the period under review, only 4 cases of post-Mohs Micrographic Surgery recurrence have been recorded, with a cure rate of over 99.7%. Conclusions: Mohs micrographic surgery is an efficient treatment method in removing cutaneous carcinoma as well as tumors with special indications with a low recurrence rate therefore reducing the need of successive surgical interventions., (Celsius.)
