The review analyses a diverse range of recent specialised research on various topics in Italian history based on global, transnational and cosmopolitan approaches. In particular, it focuses on two collections edited by Guido Abbattista and Edoardo Tortarolo, which span the 16th to the 20th centuries. While focusing on the issues of nation-building, identity, and "Italianness" arising from the intersection of Italian historiographic traditions and the new approaches popularised by transnational history and the global turn, the review presents several thematic options for navigating the essays. These include Orientalism (with a focus on the Ottoman empire), missionary knowledge, urban spaces, translocal and simultaneous processes of political and economic development, the global roles played by specific social and professional groups, and the cultural and intellectual legacy of 20th-century transnational Italian scholars. Contemporary history, economic history and economics: a dialogue of the deaf? The application of econometric model transformed the economic history. This new approach has attracted a lot of interest on economists. Initially, from early Sixties, they applied the formal mathematical approach to re-interpreting the past with new tools and theory. This pushed the economic history towards cliometrics and historical economics. Secondly, since the early years of the 21st century, economists have started to look for the historical roots of current economic outcomes, dealing with the persistent studies, and publishing their works in top economics journals. On the contrary, traditional economic historians seems marginalized: business historians and global ones created their associations and journals, that interact actively with contemporary historians and their methods. The training path, the integration of economic history under economics, the structure of the top 5 journals in the discipline, and the formal approach separate a new dialogue between disciplines. Only an opening towards the complexity of history, the use and critics of sources as a base process for building databases as well as the creation of new interpretative syntheses could change the course. Between the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, as a consequence of the increasing intercourse between China and the West, private collections of Chinese arts and crafts by European residents in China are growing. Diplomats, officials, merchants take these often-impressive collections back home to embellish residences with prestigious and attractive decoration. In the 1820s and 1830s such collections are transformed by entrepreneurs into public exhibitions or itinerant museums of Chinese material culture, for educational and commercial purpose. After introducing English Dutch and American examples, the article focuses on the case of Italian globetrotter businessman Onorato Martucci. On his return to Rome after a multi-year residence in China, he brings with him a vast assortment of Chinese objects and set up a public exhibition to promote knowledge of the Chinese world and sell the collection. Since 2017 three unusual yet similar historiographical works have been published in close succession. Similar in ambition, object and structure, these works are: Histoire mondial de la France, Storia mondiale dell'Italia and Historia mundial de España. All three share a sense of urgency as to the need to update historiographical tools and practices, in particular by critically reviewing the predominance of the national analytical framework in favour of a plurality of focal points capable of visualizing different spatialities, encompassing local, national and global. While a significant output of current historical research focuses on specific aspects of transatlantic relations in the modern world, the modern Atlantic space is not conceptualized as a unit of analysis. This essay argues that the gap between empirical dynamism and theoretical stalemate in the study of modern transatlantic relations is largely due to the way in which, in the last decades, Atlantic history and global history have shaped the study of international and transnational history. On the other hand, the transnational approach to U.S. history calls for the acknowledgement of the modern Atlantic as crucial field of interactions within the global context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent resurgence of global history has also affected international law. One of the objectives of the emerging global history of international law is to broaden its scope in an attempt to overcome Eurocentrism. In this context, China, not only as an emerging global power that can influence the creation of the normative principles grounding the future world order, but also with its own history of international law, offers a counter-teleology to the classic narrative of progress of international law understood as a scholarly discipline. This article presents a critical overview and analysis of a selection of Chinese scholarly approaches towards the history of international law. Current debates seem to be closely linked to a new conception of modernity that no longer corresponds with the Western conception. Over the past two decades the social sciences have undergone a global turn, which has affected both the conventional chronologies and geographies of historical research. This article focuses on the Italian Peninsula in a period that can be termed early global age, roughly from 1300 to 1700, when connection and communication among the different parts of the world significantly increased. The aim is to challenge the dominant narrative of Italy as a region whose history has been defined by its main dynamics within the Peninsula and its relationship with Europe and the Mediterranean. On the contrary, this article provides evidence from overseas projections of Italian powers (before and after the formation of the Iberian empires) to intellectual reactions, from the wideranging circulation of people and objects to the global lives of individuals, showing the extent to which a global reconfiguration of Italian history raises new questions and can open a promising field of research. The article examines a “Global labor history”, a historiographical approach developed since the end of the 1980s at the International Institute of Social History (IISH) in Amsterdam, that has gradually become a global network. Response to the crisis of labor and social history and reconceptualization of the theory, methodology and themes of labor history are discussed.
