Smoke-free policies in multi-unit housing are associated with reduced exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS); however, attitudes toward comprehensive smoke-free policies among residents in subsidized multi-unit housing are unknown. In this mixed-methods study, we explored the socio-ecological context for tobacco and cannabis use and attitudes toward policies restricting indoor use of these products through interviews with residents (N = 134) and staff (N = 22) in 15 federally subsidized multi-unit housing in San Francisco, California. We conducted a geo-spatial and ethnographic environmental assessment by mapping alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco retail density using ArcGIS, and conducted systematic social observations of the neighborhood around each site for environmental cues to tobacco use. We used the Capability, Opportunity, and Motivation behavior (COM-B) model to identify factors that might influence implementation of smoke-free policies in multi-unit housing. Knowledge and attitudes toward tobacco and cannabis use, social norms around smoking, neighborhood violence, and cannabis legalization were some of the social-ecological factors that influenced tobacco use. There was spatial variation in the availability of alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco stores around sites, which may have influenced residents' ability to maintain smoke-free homes. Lack of skill on how to moderate indoor smoking (psychological capability), lack of safe neighborhoods (physical opportunity), and the stigma of smoking outdoors in multi-unit housing (motivation) were some of the barriers to adopting a smoke-free home. Interventions to increase adoption of smoke-free policies in multi-unit housing need to address the co-use of tobacco and cannabis and commercial and environmental determinants of tobacco use to facilitate smoke-free living. Background: Social isolation and loneliness are pervasive issues among older adults in the United States, carrying significant health risks. Low‐income older adults are particularly vulnerable to these challenges compared with their higher‐income counterparts due to their limited access to resources and social networks. Many low‐income older adults live in subsidized housing, which has the potential to offer unique support tailored to their needs. The intersection of aging and the unique social circumstances faced by low‐income older adults significantly influences how they navigate crises. Methods: We conducted semi‐structured interviews with 24 older adults aged 63–86 residing in subsidized housing communities in the United States. The data were collected from August 2021 to November 2022 and subsequently analyzed using a thematic constant comparison analysis approach. Results: Many participants felt connected to their housing community. Participants reported that their lives changed substantially due to the pandemic: communal activities ceased leading to isolation and feelings of loneliness. Amid this challenge, participants were resourceful and found creative ways to manage. Many emphasized the crucial role of technology in maintaining emotional support despite physical separation. Conclusions: Participants in subsidized housing shared their experiences before and during this unique crisis highlighting the challenges they face, as well as their resilience and adaptability when facing challenges. Our findings underscore the significance of community activation, demonstrating that activities motivated older adults to improve their well‐being. This study explores whether there are differences in the perception of intergenerational living between three age categories under the umbrella term of "older adults," specifically among the emerging old (aged 50–64), young-old (aged 65–79), and old-old (aged 80 and above). While survey (n = 437) results showed all three age categories had a similar perception of "intergeneration" and its perceived benefits, emerging old respondents were found to be more open to various forms of intergenerational living compared to the other two age categories. This study is among the first to review current evidence on the association between public subsidized housing and physical health (i.e. health outcomes, health behaviours, and health care use) in low-income households and provides direction for future research and policy. A systematic search of four databases produced 125 articles. Among quantitative peer-reviewed articles published within the past 28 years (1995–2022), 24 examine this particular relationship. Additionally, the bulk of this work is cross-sectional and limited primarily to the US. Although there is some degree of evidence that subsidized housing is associated with improved health, inconsistent results prevent a robust conclusion. The specific type of intervention, targeted group, along with the quality of the neighbourhood and housing all contribute to this heterogeneous mix of findings. This review underscores a need for future research that analyzes causal relationships across a large and varied geographic space using a robust set of physical health outcomes. Indonesia's 2020 census shows that 25.87% of the population comprises productive working-age millennials in the family-forming phase and demand affordable housing. To aid the low-income class in accessing the housing market, the government provides the Rumah Inti Tumbuh (RIT) or "growing core house" programme. This study examines the young families' adaptation to utilize the available rooms, using mixed methods of observations, interviews, and architectural records. Study analyses employ the six layers' theory of [Brand, Stewart. 1994. How Buildings Learn: What Happens After They are Built. New York, NY: Viking] to trace back the incremental process from the early home-making, motivation development, and adaptation strategy of the spatial usages in the post-reconstruction. The study concludes that young families needed to incrementally outmode the forms of provision even in the early occupation. The adaptive solutions gradually blurred the initial design idea provided by the developer. Background: Nearly 2.9 million older Americans with lower incomes live in subsidized housing. While regional and single‐site studies show that this group has higher rates of healthcare utilization compared to older adults in the general community, little is known about healthcare utilization nationally nor associated risk factors. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of Medicare beneficiaries aged ≥65 enrolled in the National Health and Aging Trends Study in 2011, linked to Medicare claims data, including individuals living in subsidized housing and the general community. Participants were followed annually through 2020. Outcomes were hospitalization, short‐term skilled nursing facility (SNF) utilization, long‐term care utilization, and death. Fine–Gray competing risks regression analysis was used to assess the association of subsidized housing residence with hospitalization and nursing facility utilization, and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to assess the association with death. Results: Among 6294 participants (3600 women, 2694 men; mean age, 75.5 years [SD, 7.0]), 295 lived in subsidized housing at baseline and 5999 in the general community. Compared to older adults in the general community, those in subsidized housing had a higher adjusted subdistribution hazard ratio [sHR] of hospitalization (sHR 1.21; 95% CI, 1.03–1.43), short‐term SNF utilization (sHR 1.49; 95% CI, 1.15–1.92), and long‐term care utilization (sHR 2.72; 95% CI, 1.67–4.43), but similar hazard of death (HR, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.69–1.08). Individuals with functional impairment had a higher adjusted subdistribution hazard of hospitalization and short‐term SNF utilization and individuals with dementia and functional impairment had a higher hazard of long‐term care utilization. Conclusions: Older adults living in subsidized housing have higher hazards of hospitalization and nursing facility utilization compared to those in the general community. Housing‐based interventions to optimize aging in place and mitigate risk of nursing facility utilization should consider risk factors including functional impairment and dementia. Housing is a pervasive determinant of physical and mental health. Studies indicate the importance of social support to the mental and physical health of individuals who are unhoused; however, to date, little is known about this relationship in persons who are housed in unaffordable accommodations. As the demand for subsidized housing continues to increase far beyond sustainable levels in many countries, investigations of the implications of social support on the health and wellbeing of those waiting for access to subsidized accommodations becomes important to generate evidence-based policy responses. Using data from the NB Housing Study, this paper presents an analysis of the relationships between perceived social support, depression, and self-reported physical health in individuals who wait for access to subsidized housing in New Brunswick, Canada (n = 271). Hierarchical linear regression of Oslo Social Support Scale (OSSS-3) scores on Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale 10 (CES-D-10) scores and of OSSS-3 scores on self-reported physical health scores finds increases in social support are associated with decreased depression (F [1, 260] = 26.34, p <.001, R 2 =.32) and greater physical health (F [1, 260] = 7.62, p =.006, R 2 =.15). The findings indicate a need to focus on health interventions that improve mental and physical health alongside social support. However, more than half of the built subsidized homes need to meet the minimum construction standards and infrastructure requirements that can impact the health quality of their occupants. This study aims to investigate the impact of government support for purchasing subsidized housing from Indonesia's FLPP program on district/city-level public health. The results of this study indicated that the FLPP program affects home occupancy rates and the FLPP program also has a negative relationship with community morbidity levels in the MBR group. As well, state intervention in the housing sector with the FLPP subsidized housing program can demonstrably improve the quality of public health. This study recommends that the government maintain the FLPP program because, apart from increasing occupancy, it indirectly impacts health quality improvement

Despite the widely-acknowledged potential of housing with services for improving the lives of low-income older adults, ensuring their financial sustainability has been challenging. This study aimed to address this issue, drawing on 31 key informant interviews and three focus groups with payers, housing providers, and community partners involved in the Boston-area Right Care, Right Place, Right Time Program, which enrolled about 400 older adults. Transcripts were qualitatively analyzed using thematic coding. Participants agreed on the program's value, but there was little consensus on mechanisms for securing ongoing funding. The broadly distributed responsibility for individuals in housing sites, which involves health insurers, hospitals, and community service providers, provides little incentive for investment by these entities. Findings suggest that governmental mechanisms, probably at the federal level, are needed to channel funding toward these supportive services. Without such reliable funding sources, replication of supportive housing models for low-income older people will prove difficult. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Comparative housing studies traditionally focus on housing systems and social or economic policy, only rarely considering design issues. Through an examination of subsidized housing and its design in 20 countries, this paper explores how design research can benefit cross-national housing studies. Subsidized housing is essential to delivering decent and affordable homes, underpinning the right to housing. To relate design dimensions to housing systems, the analytical focus is on regulatory instruments, technical standards, and socio-spatial practices as well as housing providers, tenures, and target groups. Design research benefits the contextualization of housing systems and design outcomes in several ways. It reveals the contextual and contingent nature of regulatory cultures and instruments, socio-technical norms and standards, and socio-cultural expectations and practices that shape housing solutions. The paper concludes by considering productive ways architectural design research might contribute to an interdisciplinary housing research agenda by offering new means of theorization and analysis beyond traditional housing system typologies. Homeowners are significantly more prepared for disasters than renters. However, disaster preparedness among subsidized renters is an understudied topic despite their increased vulnerability to negative disaster outcomes. Previous research shows that one in three subsidized units is at risk for exposure to disasters, relative to one in four unsubsidized rental units and one in seven owner-occupied units. Subsidized housing residents often fall into many vulnerable statuses that would make them less prepared than renters and owners. Using 2017 American Housing Survey data, we examine differences in household disaster preparedness by housing tenure, with and without controls for such factors. Logistic regression analyses indicate that subsidized renters are significantly less prepared than unsubsidized renters, and both renter types are significantly less prepared than homeowners, controlling for demographic and neighborhood characteristics. Affordable housing is a critical resource with serious ramifications for a range of outcomes for low-income households. However, low-income prospective tenants are often denied subsidized housing through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on the basis of factors directly or indirectly related to their poverty and racialized identities. This study assesses how the admissions policies of public housing authorities and Section 8 Project-Based Rental Assistance developments in Rhode Island define criteria for denial on the basis of applicants' criminal legal history, alcohol use, landlord history, and credit history. Three key findings emerge from this study that highlight the endemic nature of housing exclusion and elucidate how it is enacted. First, the plans include grounds for denial that far exceed the HUD-mandated criteria and utilize long lookback periods. Second, plans lack clarity and transparency. Third, admissions criteria vary significantly by development characteristics. Policy interventions include increased oversight and transparency and advocacy for inclusionary language. Subsidized rents should provide greater access to residual income, which may theoretically improve health outcomes. However, little is known about the health of tenants who wait for and receive subsidized housing. This is especially problematic for New Brunswick, a Canadian province with low population density, whose inhabitants experience income inequality, social exclusion, and challenges with healthcare access. Methods This study will use a longitudinal, prospective matched cohort design. All 4,750 households on New Brunswick’s subsidized housing wait list will be approached to participate. The survey measures various demographic, social and health indicators at six-month intervals for up to 18 months as they wait for subsidized housing. Those who receive housing will join an intervention group and receive surveys for an additional 18 months post-move date. With consent, participants will have their data linked to a provincial administrative database of medical records. Discussion Knowledge of housing and health is sparse in Canada. This study will provide stakeholders with a wealth of health information on a population that is historically under-researched and underserved.

The purpose of the service is to increase the added value of products on organic vegetables in the Perumahan Bulan Terang Utama, Malang City. Organic and superior vegetable products in the Perumahan Bulan Terang Utama include mustard greens, chilies, telang flowers. The activity is based on the concept of integrated marketing communication through 7P (Product, Promotion, Price (Distribution Channel), Place, People (HR), Process, Physical Evidence or Packaging. In this activity, the object of service was assisted in the form of mica, vegetable plastic and product branding stickers, and product logo branding to increase value-added and consumer interest in organic vegetables. In addition, another goal is to increase the branding of organic vegetable production to increase the market share and income of the managers (Botanical Garden community).  Through the training and assistance provided, it is hoped that it can increase the productivity of organic vegetables and inspire communities in other regions to care about the environment and the style of healthy living. Palembang city is one of the largest cities in South Sumatra, and it cannot be separated from the problem of housing needs. There are still many people who do not own a house, especially for low-income community. In meeting housing needs, low-income residents get difficulty to have a house with cash andlimited costs. Therefore, the government provides a program to facilitate residents in meeting the needs of existing house with the Housing Financing Liquidity Facility (FLPP) program. This study aims to increase the role of stakeholders in building subsidized housing by measuring the level of satisfaction of residents in subsidized housing in Palembang. The analysis used in the study were descriptive analysis to explain resident satisfaction for each housing sample, and the method used was importance-performance analysis (IPA), Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) was a method used to determine customer satisfaction by measuring the level of importance and level of implementation. So thatit is hoped that the services provided in the future can satisfy customers, and achieve the targets, customer satisfaction index, and regression. After the results of data were obtained, the results of the level of customer satisfaction showed that the performance of subsidized housing developers in Palembang was classified in the good category, the performance index was 67.02% in which the variables of location factors, building quality factors, and the completeness of facilities and infrastructure factors had a positive effect on the satisfaction of residents of subsidized housing in the city of Palembang. Older adults with dementia or cognitive impairment face unique challenges to living safely and independently in subsidized housing. This scoping review summarizes previous studies to develop an understanding of the challenges faced by older populations with dementia or cognitive impairment. Three medical databases, five social science databases, and two gray literature databases were searched. Six themes emerged: tenants' demographic profile, physical challenges, mental/social/psychological challenges, behavioral challenges, inadequate services/environment, and barriers posed by policy and practice. We conclude that housing providers and practitioners should collaborate in ensuring tenants with dementia or cognitive impairment in subsidized housing are well supported, and we suggest areas for future research. Throughout their evolution human communities have been constantly located in the contact zone between land and aquatic surfaces. This research explores the process of nature production within the residential areas resulting from the Chilean state housing subsidy policies in the lake cities of Villarrica and Pucón and the fluvial city of Valdivia, with regard to their location and distribution. The research begins with a discussion about the production of nature, and then proceeds with the analysis of the case studies. Through a methodology that considers the quantification and location of the subsidized populations, together with their intersection with underlying vulnerabilities by means of Geographic Information Systems -GIS-, it was possible to identify the dynamics of this type of housing subsidy and the function that nature fulfills in the cases of Villarrica, Pucón, and Valdivia. The findings reveal that there is a deliberate production of nature associated with the construction of the subsidized complexes and, on the other hand, a sedimentation of vulnerabilities that could affect the 40 % of the population who are the most vulnerable in the country.

US federal housing subsidy programs have the potential to shape mental health outcomes for millions of low-income residents. Four characteristics of housing can influence mental health outcomes: cost, conditions, consistency, and context (the 4Cs). We use this framework to structure a scoping review focused on assessing what we know about how U.S. federal housing subsidy program affect mental health outcomes, and how those effects may operate through the 4C pathways. We identified 1203 peer-reviewed articles published between 2003 and 2020 that met our search criteria. A multi-phase screening process narrowed this down to 31 papers that met our eligibility criteria (examining U.S. subsidized housing and evaluating mental health outcomes). The full texts of these articles were reviewed and coded for study location, methods (including comparison groups, if present), housing programs studied, mental health outcomes, and factors related to each of the 4Cs. Most of the included articles (22/31) used quantitative methods, and a majority compared residents using different types of housing assistance (23/31) while only 7/31 included a comparison with individuals living in unsubsidized housing. Overall, results show that housing assistance has mental health benefits, and that these benefits vary across program types. The 4C framework helps to elucidate mechanisms underlying these effects. For example, residents who move from public housing to voucher-based housing (for example, through the well-studied Moving to Opportunity experiment) experience changes in neighborhood context that can be positive or negative (decrease in neighborhood violence but also decrease in social cohesion), along with less housing consistency and potentially higher utility costs. Future studies should focus on tradeoffs among the 4Cs, application of strong causal inference methods, comparisons between subsidized and unsubsidized housing, and longitudinal effects of redevelopment programs like the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative. This evidence can inform housing subsidy policy design to improve resident's mental health.

People in subsidized housing are likely to suffer from mental health issues. However, little is known about subsidized housing employees' readiness to address the residents' mental health needs. This qualitative study explores the perspectives of housing employees on their readiness to assist subsidized housing residents' mental health needs. A total of 32 subsidized housing employees participated in five focus groups. Thematic analysis revealed four key themes: prevalence of mental health issues, unexpected role as housing employees, multi-level barriers in assisting residents with mental health needs, and the need for mental health support in subsidized housing. Findings highlight the need for integrated care, including social work services in subsidized housing. Social workers may have various potential roles to serve the mental health needs of subsidized housing residents. Previous research into the costs of publicly subsidized new housing developments has found that nonprofit developers and program requirements to pay construction workers prevailing wages significantly raise project costs. An extended ordinary least squares (OLS) model is specified that aims to better capture the influence of project-specific variable costs and geographically correlated fixed costs. The model is tested with data from a 2014 State of California-sponsored affordable housing cost study. The OLS models’ estimates indicate that prevailing wages are associated with between 5 to 7% higher project costs. The cost effect associated with a developer’s tax exempt status is half as large as estimated in prior studies and is not consistently a statistically significant driver of costs. The model revisions help to identify other more important sources of cost variation, including large business cycle effects, fair market rents, average county construction wages, local government impact fees, and above-average architecture and engineering costs.

Rent burdens are increasing in U.S. metropolitan areas while subsidies on privately owned, publicly subsidized rental units are expiring. As a result, some of the few remaining affordable units in opportunity neighborhoods are at risk of being converted to market rate. Policy makers face a decision about whether to devote their efforts and scarce resources toward developing new affordable housing, recapitalizing existing subsidized housing, and/or preserving properties with expiring subsidies. There are several reasons to preserve these subsidies, one being that properties may be located in neighborhoods with greater opportunity. In this article, we use several sources of data at the census tract level to learn how subsidy expirations affect neighborhood opportunity for low-income households. Our analysis presents several key findings. First, we find that units that left the project-based Section 8 program were - on average - in lower opportunity neighborhoods, but these neighborhoods were improving. In addition, properties due to expiry from the Section 8 program between 2011 and 2020 are in higher opportunity neighborhoods than any other subsidy program. On the contrary, new Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) units were developed in tracts similar to those where LIHTC units are currently active, which tend to be lower opportunity neighborhoods.

The profile of households receiving rental assistance has changed over time, yet much of the policy and political dialogue surrounding rental assistance has not. Understanding the changing profile of subsidized households is important to evaluating the role of rental subsidies, particularly in the context of neighborhood access. This paper analyzes how the composition of subsidized households has changed over time, and how this relates to existing measures of neighborhood opportunity. We find that since 2000, the share of subsidized households headed by seniors grew, while the share with children dropped. In particular, households using vouchers used to be young relative to the general population and to households in other housing subsidy programs but have aged rapidly. We also find that current neighborhood amenity measures do not reflect these changes, and we use a national analysis and a case study of southeastern Pennsylvania to test alternative metrics. The government is currently conducting programs to provide subsidized housing in order to meet the needs of low-income people. Some of the houses provided have, however, been modified by the residents to ensure proper and effective implementation of their activities and this indicates a benchmark of the dissatisfaction of the residents and omission of a particular thing in the initial design of the subsidized housing program provided by the government. The Grand Permata Residence II Housing used as a case study has a house with type 36/91 m2 and 13 out of 14 respondents have transformed their residential space according to their economic capacity as low-income people. This study was, therefore, conducted to map the residential space transformation of the subsidized housing program provided by the government and determine the causative factors. Primary data were obtained in the form of designs and photos of space transformation through direct observation and interviews with residents while secondary data were in the form of initial floor plans retrieved from the housing manager and analyzed using descriptive analysis techniques. The findings serve as an evaluation for the government in designing subsidized housing which meets the target and needs of low-income people.

Housing affordability and eviction are intertwined, yet much remains unknown about how policy responses to increase affordable housing affect the local dynamics of eviction. This article establishes a framework for understanding how supply-side housing subsidy programs in the United States may impact the incidence of eviction filing. We apply this novel framework in a descriptive analysis of 9 years of eviction filing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Overall, we find theoretical and practical support for the hypothesis that tenants in subsidized multifamily housing are less vulnerable to eviction than tenants in similar unsubsidized properties, but we find those protections vary between subsidy programs. Namely, we find public housing and project-based rental assistance properties are associated with decreases in the incidence of eviction filing, whereas the findings for Low-Income Housing Tax Credit properties are inconclusive. We cannot treat subsidized housing programs as a universal solution to eviction, but both theory and our analysis suggest it is an important tool for lowering eviction and eviction filing rates. This article contributes to research on social vulnerability to natural hazards by analyzing the relationship between spatial patterns of flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey and subsidized rental housing residents. Our study area is Harris County, the most populous county in Texas, which includes the city of Houston and was severely impacted by Harvey-induced flooding. We sought to determine whether: (1) federally subsidized housing units and residents were disproportionately located in areas with greater flood extent and (2) areal extent of flooding around subsidized housing developments was greater for developments where higher proportions of socially vulnerable households reside. We integrated information from the US Federal Emergency Management Agency's Harvey flood depths grid with US Department of Housing and Urban Development data on relevant rental assistance programs. Results from multivariable generalized estimating equations indicated significantly higher percentages of subsidized housing units and residents in neighborhoods with greater flood extent, after accounting for pertinent spatial and social factors. We also found subsidized housing developments with more extensive flooding nearby to contain significantly higher percentages of extremely low income, female-headed and older (62 + years) households. Findings have important implications for future research and policy, since these socio-spatial inequalities are likely to be reproduced through climate change-related disasters projected to affect many cities within and outside Texas. Rural, ethnically diverse residents face at least twice the risk of Alzheimer's disease than urban residents. Chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension which increase dementia risk are more prevalent in rural areas with less access to specialty providers. A home-based approach for increasing dementia detection and treatment rates was tested among rural residents of government-assisted independent living facilities (N = 139; 78% non-White, and 70% with health literacy below 5th grade). Of 28 residents identified at risk during cognitive screening, 25 agreed to further in-depth assessment by adult gerontological nurse practitioners (AGNP). Fifteen of 25 (60%) completing consequent primary provider referrals were diagnosed with dementia and receiving new care (statistically significant; [χ2(1) = 76.67, p <.001, Phi = 0.743]). Home-based dementia management through a community engagement approach can help to meet the Healthy People 2030 goals of earlier detection and treatment and reduce the length of costly institutionalizations. Many countries use demand-side housing subsidies to support low-income households. Unlike public or social housing programs, demand-side subsidies require recipients to enter the private market to use their benefits. The focus of this study is the experiences of assisted households in the private housing market and the outcomes they achieve. Given the link between policy design and program outcomes and because all housing subsidy programs are not created equal, one might expect the experiences and outcomes of recipients to also vary. To examine this relationship, using data from national housing surveys, this study analyzes cross-national variation in housing support programs and compares the housing and neighbourhood outcomes of subsidized households in the US, the UK, and the Netherlands. The findings of this study highlight that market context and policy design are associated with housing outcomes. In particular, the strong tenant supports and favourable design of housing assistance in the Netherlands is associated with favourable outcomes for subsidized households. In the US and the UK, subsidized households, in general, underperform their unsubsidized peers. This article underscores the importance of institutional context and program design when public assistance programs require recipients to enter the private market to use a benefit. Permanent supportive housing for families experiencing homelessness—typically, subsidized housing that is not time limited and provides access to a range of support services—has substantially increased over the past 10 years, despite an absence of rigorous evidence of its effectiveness. We examine the benefits of subsidized housing with supportive services compared to subsidized housing alone. Our findings suggest that supportive housing offers more opportunities for access to services and benefits than subsidized housing alone, but it may not be beneficial to families' housing stability or to family members' employment or involvement with the criminal justice system. We argue that housing that is coupled with intensive case management, that is service rich, and that provides and adheres to harm reduction principles may help to strengthen supportive housing's effectiveness. As deadly and destructive wildfires become increasingly common in the western United States due to climate change, low-income households face particular difficulties recovering from these disasters. Despite this threat, surprisingly little empirical evidence exists about the exposure and vulnerability to wildfire hazards of residents of subsidized housing. This study focuses on the subsidized housing population for several reasons: residents generally have less adaptive capacity to respond to wildfires; the locations of subsidized housing units reflect relatively stable locations of low-income households for decades; and policymakers can intervene to retrofit existing housing as well as shape future housing siting and design. The dataset created for this study includes all Census tracts in California with housing units by type, wildland-urban interface (WUI) coverage, and an index of social vulnerability. Using a combination of descriptive statistics and spatial regression models, the analysis focuses on the intersection of subsidized housing and wildfire hazards. Results show that subsidized housing is disproportionately located outside the WUI in California's metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas. Extreme heat is the leading weather-related cause of mortality in the United States, but there is little evidence about how this climate hazard affects residents of different housing types. In this study, we examine whether Californians living in subsidized housing are more vulnerable to extreme heat than those living in unsubsidized housing. We create a tract-level data set combining housing characteristics, downscaled climate projections, and an index of adaptive capacity and sensitivity to heat. We analyze exposure and vulnerability to heat by housing type and location. We find that subsidized housing is disproportionately located in the hottest tracts that simultaneously also have the most sensitive populations and barriers to adaptation (high-high tracts). Whereas 8% of California's housing units are in high-high tracts, these tracts contain 16% of public housing units, 14% of Low-Income Housing Tax Credit units, and 10% of Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers. Background and Objectives Older adults living in subsidized housing have typically been excluded from exercise intervention studies. We conducted a qualitative study to explore the perceived physical, psychological, social, and economic factors that influenced participation in and adherence to a year-long Tai Chi intervention within an ongoing cluster-randomized controlled trial (RCT) for older adults living within subsidized housing facilities. Research Design and Methods Focus groups were held with participants of the RCT who were allocated to the trial's Tai Chi intervention. Individual phone interviews were conducted with those allocated to Tai Chi who had low adherence or who had withdrawn their participation from the study. Emergent themes were extracted using grounded-theory methods. Results In this qualitative study, we enrolled 41 participants who were allocated to the RCT's Tai Chi intervention: 38 completed and 3 withdrew from the study. Average Tai Chi class attendance was 64.3%. Pragmatic factors that led to higher adherence and retention included: locating classes within each facility; providing programs at no cost; and deployment of a skilled research support team. In addition, the use of an accessible, simplified Tai Chi program improved confidence, social support, self-efficacy, and self-reported improvements in physical and psychological well-being. Discussion and Implications Perceived physical, psychological, social benefits, and self-efficacy likely enhance adherence and retention to research-based Tai Chi interventions for older adults. Delivering an on-site, no cost, and supportive program appears critical to overcoming financial and environmental barriers to participation for those living within subsidized housing. We investigate the impact of supportive housing (Housing First, or HF) programs on public service utilization of people experiencing homelessness in Calgary, Alberta. We use data on clients between 2012 and 2016, and, using a pre–post design, we assess the interaction of each client with the health and justice systems. We estimate the savings for $1 spent on HF to be between $1.17 and $2.84. There are potential estimation biases, but our estimates are broadly consistent with evidence from randomized controlled trials. Heralded as an innovative if short-lived builder of affordable housing, in 1975, the New York State Urban Development Corporation (UDC) defaulted on more than $2 billion in debt obligations and narrowly avoided bankruptcy. Offering the first detailed examination of its finances, this article argues the UDC was prescient of a new model for public-private housing finance that in the 1980s emerged in the ashes of conventional, state-financed public housing. In response to many of the long-standing challenges with government-produced housing, particularly inadequate funding, the UDC's creation presaged the debt-driven model of development which would mature in the subsequent decades. While many scholars continue to reify criticism of government-created housing projects often on the basis of design or policy defects, the UDC's failure highlights the importance of financial and political support in shaping the success of subsidized housing. OBJECTIVES: Tai Chi (TC) may benefit older adults with a variety of diseases and disabilities. We tested the hypothesis that TC improves physical function in older adults living in low‐income housing facilities. DESIGN: Cluster randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Subsidized housing facilities in Boston, Massachusetts, and neighboring communities. PARTICIPANTS: Volunteers were recruited from 15 facilities. The 180 randomized participants were 60 years of age or older, able to understand English and participate in TC, expected to remain in the facility for 1 year, and able to walk independently. INTERVENTION: TC classes were conducted in the housing facilities twice/week for 1 year and compared with monthly health promotion educational classes and social calls. MEASUREMENTS: The primary outcome was physical function measured by the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Secondary outcomes included other aspects of physical and cognitive function, and falls. RESULTS: An interim analysis revealed less improvement over 12 months in SPPB scores among TC participants (+.20 units; 95% confidence interval [CI] = −.20 to +.60; P = .69) vs control participants (+.51 units; 95% CI = +.15 to +.87; P = .007), a difference of −.31 units (95% CI = −.66 to.04; P = .082). This met the criterion for futility, and the Data Safety Monitoring Board recommended trial termination. No differences were found in 6‐ or 12‐month changes favoring TC in any secondary outcomes or adverse events. CONCLUSION: In older adults with multiple chronic conditions living in subsidized housing facilities, 6 and 12 months of twice/week TC classes were not associated with improvements in functional health. Abstract Scholars and planners have emphasized the importance of the living environments provided to marginalized families by subsidized housing. Many previous studies have focused primarily on the socio-demographics environments of subsidized housing, but it remains unknown if subsidized housing programs facilitate disadvantaged populations' access to walkable environments. Furthermore, little attention has been devoted to the potential differences in walkability of the environments provided by tenant-based programs such as Housing Choice Voucher (HCV), and project-based programs like the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC). This study examined the spatial distribution of HCV and LIHTC housing units and their environmental attributes in the American city of Austin, Texas. Binary logistic regression models were used to estimate various walkable environments around subsidized households. We found that the walkability characteristics varied between the two subsidized housing programs. HCV households were mostly in neighborhoods with high accessibility to amenities and significant sidewalk completeness, but had low densities of crosswalks and transit stops. Meanwhile, LIHTC households were principally found in census block groups characterized by poor sidewalk completeness. Other walkability features, such as the Street Smart Walk Score and the crosswalk density, were not significantly related to neighborhoods containing LIHTC households. These findings will help planning practitioners understand the spatial attributes of subsidized households and better improve their neighborhood walkability. The agreement between self-reported and toxicologically verified substance use provides important information about the validity of self-reported use. While some studies report aggregate agreement across follow-up points, only a few have examined the agreement at each time point separately. An overall rate of agreement across time may miss changes that occur as people progress through a research study. In this study, a sample of 644 adults (43.8% male, 32.6% White, 57.0% Black, 90.2% ages 36+) residing in subsidized housing was used to determine the agreement between self-reported use and saliva toxicological testing for marijuana, cocaine, PCP, amphetamine, and methamphetamine at three different time points. Agreement between saliva toxicological testing and self-report ranged between 84.2% and 94.3% for different substances over time. Higher rates of agreement were found for cocaine than had been reported by previous studies. Statistically significant differences in the odds ratios of concordance over time (baseline, 6-month, and 12-month follow-up) were found for marijuana and the combined category for PCP, amphetamine, and methamphetamine. Our findings suggest that oral fluid drug tests generally withstand community field assessments and result in relatively high levels of agreement for marijuana, cocaine, PCP, amphetamine, and methamphetamine use, when compared to self-report. Because of the ease of sample collection and low chance of adulteration, we conclude that saliva testing is a viable method for toxicological confirmation of substance use behavior in this setting.
