In recent years, higher learning institutions have been forced to integrate online learning into their curriculum. However, despite the increasing popularity of online learning, students' engagement and interaction within this environment remain a crucial aspect to explore. This study investigates how connected the students are during their online learning, focusing on teacher-student interaction, comfort level, and social media engagement. The sample comprised 73 undergraduate physics students from the Department of Science Education, University of Ilorin. A researcher-designed questionnaire was used for data collection, and the responses were analysed using frequency, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. The findings revealed that overall, the students were connected to their learning online. It was concluded that the students were highly connected to the online learning mode, particularly in terms of their comfort with the system and interaction with their teacher. However, limitations concerning live interactions, peer collaboration, and focus require attention. It was recommended that educators consider incorporating synchronous elements, such as live video sessions and interactive virtual whiteboards, to enhance real-time engagement and active demonstration of understanding in online classes.

In Finland, graduating teachers are expected to become “transformational agents” who are able to critically reflect upon and evaluate what types of changes are necessary in education and who can also implement the required changes. However, based on previous studies, teacher education seems to have little influence on future teachers’ core perceptions of teacher’s work. Instead, previous studies have demonstrated that new teachers’ perceptions might draw on tradition and cultural-historical phases of the Finnish teacher profession, and normative ideas concerning the ideal characteristics of a “good” teacher or student teacher. In this study, we examine how student teachers’ perceptions of teacherhood build upon and who has the power to define the “ideal teacher.” Based on our study, we suggest that to understand how the perception of the ideal teacher is formed and how teacher education could better influence the transformation of these perceptions, we must consider the unofficial power relations among student teachers. These power relations seem to originate from the hegemonic discourse of the “typical student teacher,” which contains and renews traditional perceptions of teaching and teachers as authorities and experts transmitting subject content knowledge and skills to pupils. This discourse seems to be renewed among student teachers and has more impact on students’ perceptions than the official aims of teacher education. Hence, in our study, the unspoken sociocultural power relations come to light in different ways, in the peer relations between student teachers but also in the students’ conceptions of the teacher educators. We suggest that by unraveling the unofficial power relations in the sociocultural context of teacher education and by focusing on supporting every student teacher’s agency and critical reflection, it is possible to transform the perceptions about the ideal teacher.

This study explored the representation of the Initiation, Response, Feedback (IRF) cycle in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. Video recordings have been used to collect data from 10 classes, which were managed by 8 L2 teachers. In total, 900 minutes of video recordings with 784 triadic patterns were collected. Using Conversation Analysis (CA), the findings demonstrated that the IRFs in classroom interactions were disclosed in various ways. The coding system revealed that the teachers generally used authentic and focused questions. In the F stage, the teachers used elaboration, scaffolding, correction, and refusal strategies. The F stage was also a rich juncture for local contingencies as the teachers’ productions were contingent on the students’ responses. Likewise, uptake and scaffolding have been important elements in the IRF patterns. The analysis suggests that the third stage can create an ad-hoc co-constructive classroom interaction and provide L2 learners with various learning opportunities.

There is a gap in the knowledge concerning the teaching of children with multiple or specific difficulties. The objective was to characterize and compare positive and negative teaching practices among three groups of children: a non-clinical sample, without problem behaviors and typical academic performance (G1), and two clinical samples: a group with multiple behavioral and academic performance problems (G2) and a group with specific problem behaviors (G3). A total of 102 boys and their respective teachers participated in the study. The teachers answered instruments addressing teaching practices, social skills, and problem behaviors. A comparison between the groups showed that children with associated performance and behavioral problems presented more problem behaviors and fewer social skills, while their teachers reported a higher deficit of positive teaching practices and more frequently used negative practices. The results revealed the importance of studying cumulative risks and promoting interventions among teachers and children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although teacher effectiveness plays a critical role in the learning process, little is known about its conceptualization and assessment, particularly in higher education (HE). This review aims to fill this gap by (a) listing the literature on teacher effectiveness, (b) identifying the instruments that have been used to assess teacher effectiveness (HE), and (c) highlighting the most effective teaching approaches based on the relevant literature. The selection process considered studies published since 1990 and conducted in higher education contexts with students. The research articles measured instructional processes and faculty effectiveness in terms of student outcomes, focusing on student achievement and student satisfaction. In reviewing the international research, special attention was paid to Southeastern Europe and Greece in particular. After a thorough review, the analysis revealed 26 studies. The results show that there is no universal definition of effective higher education teaching. Effective teaching may manifest itself in high scores on student performance assessments or in rewarding classroom interactions. Based on this principle, the way teacher effectiveness is defined is closely linked to proposed solutions in educational policy. Furthermore, research has shown that student-centered teaching styles are perceived by students as more effective, engaging, and performance-enhancing. However, several studies have not clarified why different teachers use different teaching styles in similar contexts. This review represents a step forward in our understanding of teacher effectiveness in HE. Nonetheless, effective teaching strategies could be better conceptualized through future research aimed at assessing the contextual nature of teaching along with student perceptions of effectiveness and expectations for an effective classroom climate.

Although the number of U.S. female professors has risen steadily in recent years, female professors are still subject to different student expectations and treatment. Students continue to perceive and expect female professors to be more nurturing than male professors are. We examined whether students may consequently request more special favors from female professors. In a survey of professors (n = 88) across the United States, Study 1 found that female (versus male) professors reported getting more requests for standard work demands, special favors, and friendship behaviors, with the latter two mediating the professor gender effect on professors’ self-reported emotional labor. Study 2 utilized an experimental design using a fictitious female or male professor, with college student participants (n = 121) responding to a scenario in which a special favor request might be made of the professor. The results indicated that academically entitled students (i.e., those who feel deserving of success in college regardless of effort/performance) had stronger expectations that a female (versus male) professor would grant their special favor requests. Those expectations consequently increased students’ likelihood of making the requests and of exhibiting negative emotional and behavioral reactions to having those requests denied. This work highlights the extra burdens felt by female professors. We discuss possible moderators of these effects as well as the importance of developing strategies for preventing them. Various definitions of rapport can be found between different disciplines and also within a certain discipline, including higher education. Effective teaching is a challenging task and requires a skilled teacher. In addition to managing a variety of didactic and pedagogical approaches, teacher should also be able to create a positive learning environment, including creating a good rapport with his/her students. Unfortunately, numerous imprecise definitions of student-teacher rapport in higher education, usually taken from dictionaries, are used by researchers in this field. We belive this is the reason why they don't provide possibilities for clear operationalization and development of a proper instrument for measuring the quality of student-teacher rapport. In this paper we proposed a new conceptualization of student-teacher rapport in higher education, built on the existing model of general rapport and on the basis of relevant findings from the field of higher education. We defined rapport as an interactive phenomena and placed the emphasis on the subjective experience / insider's perspective, although the quality of rapport can also be estimated through various verbal and non-verbal clues. This experiental aspect is expressed in feelings and thoughts of interactants. Since the teacher acts as a leader of the teaching/learning process he/she is responsable for creating good rapport with his/her students. In the proposed conceptualization we've used same structural components as L. Tickle-Degnen and Rosenthal (1990) used in their model of rapport and adapted them for the context of higher education. These are positivity, mutual attention and coordination. Looking at the existing concepts of student-teacher rapport in higher education through the prism of the aforementioned model, it can be seen that all elements relate either to positivity or mutual attention, while the component of coordination is almost completely absent. In our opinion, it is coordination which differentiates rapport from a general good interpersonal relationship. With coordination we refer to coordinated and smooth interaction and also to coordination in the process of teaching and learning. The new conceptualization of student-teacher rapport in higher education represents an important step toward student-oriented approach to teaching and learning – a current paradigm in education in general. Questions which remain open are presented and directions for further research outlined.

Student agency is considered an important outcome of formative assessment, yet we know little about how interactional dynamics between teacher and student are implicated in the development of agency. Using Bakhtinian notions of dialogic space and persuasive voice, we analyze how four high school teachers assess and support students' writing processes in conference-like assessment events, tracing whether and to what extent student concerns were addressed. We found that teachers created dialogic space for agency and supported students' knowledge construction by positioning themselves as interested readers, eliciting students' ideas and confusion, and offering customized support for students' use of sociocultural tools. • We show how agency is co-constructed between teachers and students in writing assessment conferences. • Teachers can create space for agency to emerge by positioning themselves as readers seeking clarity. • Teachers can create space for agency by eliciting students' difficulties with the writing task. • Teachers can create space for agency by offering interactional scaffolds for academic language use. The family's participation in the children's educational routine can bring benefits to all subjects involved in this process and to school management. The study sought to understand the conceptions of mothers and fathers of elementary school students about the social competence of their children's teachers. Eight mothers and eight fathers participated, each half from public and private schools. A semi-structured interview was conducted individually with each participant. The collected data were analyzed using the IRAMUTEQ software. The results indicated similarities between the expectations of the two groups when demonstrating the expectation that the teachers 'behaviors are favorable to the students' interaction, promote their learning, offer support in their difficulties, and allow an adequate disciplinary correction. The differences were that the parents appeared to have a more distant view of the educational universe, leading them to present more concerned conceptions about the teachers’ behavior in relation to the mothers’ results.

- Abstract
The article analyzes the commentaries of teachers (n=414) in two social networks on the topic of school indiscipline. The approach is pluri-methodological, with an exploratory-descriptive character based on content analysis. For the textual analysis of commentaries, the software Alceste was employed, which divided the corpus in three classes: Class 1, disciplinary problems encountered in everyday teaching in the classroom; class 2, extracurricular causes of indiscipline; class 3, coercive actions to curb indiscipline. On the basis of the commentaries the conclusion was made that there is a dominant social representation guided by defensive attitudes, heteronomous understanding and explanation exogenous to the school and educational environment, and another minor one, of relational nature that takes into account the interaction of the factors that produce it. Learning in active methods, as Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Problem-Solving, depends essentially on the link teachers-students. This research sought to understand the experiential process of medical teachers with students’ training of 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th grade of the medical course of a Faculty in São Paulo’s interior. Semi-structured interviews were carried out and the methodological framework of Data Based Theory and the theoretical framework of Symbolic Interactionism were used. The sample was constituted by theoretical saturation, occurred in the 19th interview. The theoretical reference for the discussion of the results was Symbolic Interactionism. The article focuses on the 'Finding: Empowerment, Experience, and Motivation as Permanent Enablers of Active Methods' category, specifically the sub-category 'Experiencing reciprocity in operationalizing the active method'. The study enabled to deepen the knowledge about the theoretical-practical presuppositions underlying teaching, essentially on the aspect of the teacher-student’s relationship. It is discussed how much the teacher can provide greater security to the student and, simultaneously, to have his practice strengthened. Thus, it contributes to the process of ongoing training of medical teachers and other professional categories in active methods. Abstract Complaints against school conduct is a central phenomenon in the educational context, and, because of that, the number of referrals to the Psychology Services is increasing. This research aimed to understand the meanings attributed by public school professionals about complaints regarding school misconduct, with emphasis on the reasons attributed and the strategies used by teachers and schools in the care of students who present a complaint against school conduct. To understand that, teachers, principals and technical-pedagogical assistants from municipal public schools of a municipality of Metropolitan Florianópolis were interviewed. The results indicated that the students themselves and their families were considered guilty for school misconduct. The main care strategies from both schools and teachers have focused on the child itself and have mostly exempted school from causing that discomfort. The presence of speeches that naturalize practices stigmatizing students with difficulties in the schooling process was also highlighted. - Abstract
Peer rejection is a sociometric category that reveals a low preference among the peer group. To this category belong children that receive a lot of negative nominations and a few positive ones from their peers, when compared with the group average. Besides being a common problem at childhood and relatively stable over time, and also being related to juvenile delinquency, drug abuse, scholar evasion and depression, it is a theme not very studied in Brazil. This article's objective was to underline some rejection's important characteristics described at PSI the literature, relating this sociometric status with peer friendship, social abilities and teacher's role in this context. The movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower was used to exemplify and dialogue with the described aspects. Using the movie as a motivational and didactic resource, the objective was to enhance the visibility of this subject both in the academic field and in the group of people responsible for child development. - Abstract
This study analyzed Spanish teachers' behavior and the transmission of gender stereotypes in physical education classes in secondary schools in Seville, southern Spain. We observed 48 physical education lessons given by four Spanish teachers (two men and two women). Descriptive codes, which were generated iteratively, were clustered, categorized, integrated, recoded, and re-categorized. They allowed us to identify five major themes related to the transmission of gender stereotypes of teachers: the channel of communication, use of demonstrations, task organization, disciplinary measures, and questions asked. We used a coding sheet as well as audio and video recordings to register the categories. The Mann-Whitney test produced significance levels lower than .05, resulting in the null hypothesis being rejected. Sexist behaviors were found in the channel of communication, the students chosen for demonstrations, task organization (the groupings), and in the monitoring of group discipline. However, we found no difference in task organization (material and space) or quantity of questions asked. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The relationships between preschool children and their teachers are an important component of the quality of the preschool experience. This study used attribution theory as a framework to better understand these relationships, examining the connec- tion between teachers' perceptions of children's behavior and teachers' behavior toward those children. One hundred seven preschool children and 24 preschool teachers participated in this study. Two teachers reported on each child's behavior using the Teacher Report Form of the Child Behavior Checklist. Commands and praise directed toward children by the teachers in the study were coded from classroom videotapes. Teachers gave more commands to children that they perceived as having greater general behavior problems, even after controlling for the shared variance in the other classroom teacher's report of the child's behavior. Implications for school psycholo- gists, teachers, and researchers are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper focuses on characterizing the interaction between physical education (PE) teachers and their students. Likewise, the student’s disposal to the tasks arised in PE classes. To achieve this purpose it has been taken an ethnographic or qualitative approach. The instruments used were the observation of the dynamics established in PE sessions and semi-structured interviews aimed at teachers. A total of fifty-five sessions were recorded by this observation, belonging to Elementary School, Secondary and High school. Among the conclusions, it highlights that PE teachers maintains a closer relation with students than in other subjects, which are classes that do not involve difficulty. However, the observed satisfaction does not reach high levels, non-matching feature with the most optimistic perception that teachers have on this student’s dimension., Este estudio se centra en la caracterización de la interacción entre los profesores de Educación Física y sus estudiantes.

In this study we describe college students' perception of their relationship with professors and the influence on their adjustment to college. Twenty nine college students of Psychology and Economy were interviewed. The students' reports were submitted to phenomenological analysis. We identified five aspects of professor-student relationship that may facilitate or make students' college adjustment more difficult: (1) differences between teachers of high school and professors of higher education, (2) professors' background and didactics, (3) receptiveness and incentive, (4) academic and personal relationship, and (5) the importance of professor in higher education. The results show that it is important that professors establish not only theoretical and didactic concepts, but also interpersonal relationships with their students. We conclude that the role of professor is far beyond teaching. The aim of this paper was to explore the relationship between the students´ perceptions of teachers' behavior and self-regulated learning in Mathematics. The study, conducted among a group of 625 students of Portuguese Compulsory Education (7th to 9th grades) using the QIPBásic and the IPAAr allowed us to understand differences in the aforementioned variables related with students´ gender, age, grades and number of retentions, parents education, professor of Mathematics gender and number of years with the same teacher. The most relevant findings to teaching practice are relate to the positive relation between self-regulated learning and students' perception of their teachers with regard to leadership, helping/friendly, and understanding, as well as the negative relation between self -regulated learning and students' perception of uncertain, dissatisfied and admonishing of their teachers.

The present paper analyses how primary education students represent teachers in aspects such as genre, age, appearance, attitude, and teaching methodology. It also examines the effect of these aspects on the student-teacher interaction. The study was based on the Social Representation Theory (MOSCOVICI, 1978, 1984, 2004), and it included 69 students from different school levels who were asked to answer a questionnaire as well as interview questions in focus groups. In addition to revealing some stereotypes in the representations of students about teachers, the data showed that teachers' attitudes and their methodology may create tensions in the classroom. Keywords: Social representations. Primary education teachers. Teacher student interaction. In this study, the authors examined the relationship between teacher and student enjoyment. Based on social-cognitive approaches to emotions, they hypothesized (a) that teacher enjoyment and student enjoyment within classrooms are positively linked and (b) that teacher enthusiasm mediates the relationship between teacher and student enjoyment. Self-reported enjoyment of mathematics classes was available from 1,542 students from 71 classrooms at 2 time points (Grades 7 and 8). At Time 2, mathematics teachers' reports of their enjoyment of teaching were available (N = 71), as well as student ratings of teacher enthusiasm. The findings were in line with theoretical expectations. Multilevel structural equation modeling showed that teacher and student enjoyment were positively related even when the authors adjusted for students' previous-class levels of mathematics enjoyment, and that the effect of teacher enjoyment on student enjoyment was mediated by teacher enthusiasm. Discussion centers on the practical implications for affective interactions in the classroom.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior The aim of this master s thesis is to know the adjustment process of graduate students to their courses. It was realized two studies. The first study consisted of a systematic review of literature that aimed to investigate in an exploratory way personal, relational and institutional factors that are described in the literature as influences in the graduate students adjustment to their courses. The 15 international peer-reviewed articles that composed the final sample of this research showed that the integration with graduate life depends on the setting with the demands of the graduate program, on financial security and, above all, on the establishment of a rewarding relationship between advisor and student. Based on this information and on the lack of studies about the subject in the Brazilian graduate scenario, the second study was proposed to investigate the master students vision about their advisors and the perception of students about the relationship between advisors and students, besides to identify the possible influence of this perception in the adjustment of these master students to their courses. It participated in the study 12 graduate students from two graduate programs of a public university located in south of Brazil. The answers given by them to the issues of a semi-structured interview were subjected to content analysis. It was noticed that the vision (positive or negative) that the students had about the personal attributes and behavioral styles of their advisors influenced the nature of the relationship (satisfactory or unsatisfactory) between them. It is believed that the results of this work will stimulate government, development agencies and higher education institutions in Brazil to concern about the adjustment of graduate students to their courses in order to minimize cases of failure in masters and doctoral programs in the country.

The purpose of this study was to analyze and interpret characteristics of classroom discourse of an elementary mathematics classroom. To examine the classroom discourse, a fifth grade mathematics classroom was observed during sixteen weeks, and twenty lesson hours in total. The analysis was based on Student Learning as the main category, which was further divided into two sub-categories, including content and learning. Results showed that despite the recent reform efforts in school mathematics in Turkey; still teacher-centered instruction continues to be the dominating instructional method. Although the results did not meet the assumptions of discursive classroom at all; based on the results, it could be said that in classroom practices, mathematics teachers try to make connections between mathematical content and other disciplines where they tried to give examples from real-world situations and also encourage students in that way; as pointed out in the school mathematics curriculum.

- Abstract
With the purpose of investigating associations between bullying and teacher-students relationship, 443 public schools students from fourth to ninth grades, with a mean age of 12.25 years (SD = 2.21) answered two self-report measures. Instruments used were the Bullying Questionnaire, which identifies roles, contexts and forms of this aggression, and the Student-Teacher Relationship Scale, which assesses affinity and conflict with teachers, both applied in a classroom setting. A higher prevalence of bullying was found; nearly 20% of the students were victimized. These aggressions take place most often in classrooms. Bullies' perceptions of their relationships with teachers were poorer than those of their peers. The bullying and teacher-student relationship variables were not distributed evenly in the school sample under study. Results showed that interventions should be centered on teachers' roles in the classroom and must be tailored to the needs of each specific grade., Para associar bullying e relação professor-aluno, 443 estudantes do quarto ao nono de escolas públicas com idade média em anos de 12,25 (DP = 2,21) responderam duas medidas de autorrelato. - Abstract
Motivation is essential for the students involvement at school. For the self-determination theory, the teachers motivational style, either controller or promoter of autonomy, contributes to foster the occurrence of qualitatively differentiated types of motivation. In this study of exploratory nature the interactions among two teachers and their students were observed. The sample was composed according to the score of 39 teachers in the motivational style assessment, by means of the application of a self-report instrument, named problems at school. Out of this total, two teachers, one with an autonomy promoting motivational style and the other one, a control-oriented one, had their classes observed along seven sessions, with the aim of collecting data for the elaboration of a protocol containing interaction categories. Seven other observation sessions were then carried out. The results have indicated that, despite findings of differences between the motivational style assessment performances, the teachers preferably interacted with their students in a controlling manner. However, the autonomy promoter teacher interacted less controllably than the controlling teacher, as regards the management of time reserved for the accomplishment of class activities, as well as offering informative feedback. The educational implications of the results are also discussed., A motivação é fundamental para o envolvimento dos estudantes na escola.
