Mangrove area loss is increasing globally, and drivers of loss differ depending not only on natural conditions but also on national and regional policies. Some countries with the most mangrove area, for instance, Brazil, lack broad systematic quantification of specific drivers of mangrove land‐use and land‐cover (LULC) change dynamics. We investigated the direct conversion (i.e., replacement) of mangrove forests due to changes in 21 types of LULC across Brazil from 2000 to 2020 based on annual LULC maps developed by the MapBiomas project. We quantified the area changes at national, regional, and state scales. We also determined and quantified mangrove forest conversion for each of the 21 LULC types with a pixel comparison analysis and identified temporal trends with a time‐series analysis. The total conversion of mangrove area (3429 km2) was offset by a gain that was twice as large (6776 km2). Forest formations and water bodies, which may be interpreted as natural or indirect anthropogenic changes, were associated with most of the areas where mangrove cover was lost. Land‐use modifications, mainly creation of pastures, accounted for 4% of direct mangrove conversions. We found that changes in LULC categories and patterns of gain and loss of mangrove areas differed among Brazilian states and regions. Based on other research, they also differ between Brazil and other countries. Thus, integrated mangrove forest conservation and management efforts that transcend political boundaries are essential to effectively address negative impacts on mangrove forests. We provide an interactive map to allow qualitative assessments of mangrove conversion drivers by different stakeholders, such as managers, policymakers, and nongovernmental organizations. This study addresses the dynamics of fires and the subsequent vegetation regeneration in the Cerrado biome, focusing on how the magnitude of burns, observed through the size of burn scars, impacts ecosystem resilience and recovery. Using satellite imagery from the MODIS sensor over a 22-year period (2001-2023), we evaluated the extent of burned areas, fire frequency, and the effectiveness of post-fire vegetation regeneration processes. The analysis reveals that approximately 60% of the total Cerrado area has been affected by fires, with specific years such as 2007, 2010, and 2012 showing a high number of burned area fragments. The regeneration analysis, based on the number of fragments and the total burned area, indicates that while the Cerrado's resilience remains high under an 80% regeneration criterion, there is growing concern about its full regeneration capacity, especially considering a 95% threshold. The results suggest that despite frequent fires, the Cerrado's regenerative capacity may be declining, potentially due to soil nutrient loss after successive burn events. This study can inform the development of management strategies and interventions aimed at ensuring the preservation and sustainability of this critical biome, highlighting the complexity of addressing natural disasters amid climate change. Remote sensing makes it possible to understand the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of a forest system, indirectly, which has been a challenge in several studies. Correlating data from these sensors with field-acquired sample data, through forest formations collection and measurements, can be a highly effective strategy in comprehending forest structure and the entire fragment under study. A literature review on the subject enabled an analysis and discussion about methodologies used in academic studies, particularly vegetation indices extracted from satellite image data, as well as their correlation with primary forest inventory data, using the statistical model of linear regression. The practical development of the work took place in a forest fragment of a phytogeographic formation called Seasonal Deciduous Forest (Dry Forest) in Funilândia, Minas Gerais, Brasil, where 8 (eight) sampled plots were duly inventoried and subjected to statistical analyses in the office. In this research it was found a strong correlation between vegetation indices, especially the GNDVI (0,82), and the wood volumes of the samples collected in the field. This fact allowed the main objective of this research to be achieved, which was to extrapolate the volume of the entire forest fragment studied using the predictive model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Se identificaron las áreas con potencial para albergar depósitos de arcillas en la provincia de las Tunas, mediante la combinación de datos obtenidos por teledetección e información geológica integrada en el Sistema de Información Geográfica (SIG). Se utilizaron técnicas de mapeo geológico, de teledetección y modelado geoespacial. Los hallazgos revelaron una distribución heterogénea de zonas con moderadas, altas y muy altas potencialidades para albergar depósitos de arcillas en toda la región, con concentraciones significativas en los municipios Manatí, Tunas, Jobabo, Colombia y Amancio. La integración de datos obtenidos por teledetección y fuentes geológicas en un entorno SIG ha demostrado ser eficaz y viable para este tipo de análisis.

A major problem in studying bird movement in many countries is data scarcity, precluding information about the spatial and temporal properties of avian distribution and dynamics as well as their consequences for human lives. We address this problem by proposing an innovative approach based on the relation between counts of signal attenuation of wireless communication to the presence of birds across or near wireless links of cellular backhaul networks. Wireless point-to-point communication links, on either ground level or earth-satellite links, cover the globe. We statistically relate between signal attenuation in terrestrial Commercial Microwave Links (CMLs) and bird migration. Because modern communication systems measure and often log signal levels routinely, we propose using existing signal level measurements of cellular and other wireless communication systems around the world as sensors for monitoring bird movement. Using actual measurements from operational CMLs, we show that the daily cycle of signal attenuation during bird migration periods matched that of the water-bird migration traffic rate recorded by nearby bird radar. This demonstrates the potential of the proposed method for opportunistic bird movement monitoring by CMLs across the globe, with no additional hardware installation, maintenance, or communication costs. La investigación aborda los efectos del cambio climático en la laguna de Limoncocha, situada en la Amazonía ecuatoriana, entre 2013 y 2024. Utilizando una metodología mixta, se analizaron imágenes satelitales Landsat procesadas con QGIS 3.34.9 y se emplearon índices espectrales para evaluar los cambios en el espejo de agua. Adicionalmente, el modelo econométrico ARIMA permitió proyectar tendencias futuras. Los resultados identificaron fluctuaciones críticas en 2017 (163,2 ha) y 2021 (132,0 ha), vinculadas a variaciones climáticas regionales. ARIMA estimó un área promedio de 196.662,9 ha para los próximos cinco años, aunque con incertidumbre significativa. Estas evidencias destacan la vulnerabilidad del ecosistema al calentamiento global. Se concluye que es imperativo implementar estrategias adaptativas de monitoreo y conservación para mitigar los impactos y garantizar la sostenibilidad de este ecosistema tropical, esencial para la biodiversidad de la región.

Este estudio se centra en el monitoreo de Ismene amancaes, una planta endémica de las lomas costeras de Lima, dentro del Área de Conservación Privada (ACP) Lomas Quebrada Río Seco, conocida como Santuario del Amancay. Mediante la integración de técnicas de sistemas de información geográfica (SIG) y aprendizaje automático, se evaluó la distribución, las características morfológicas de la especie y las condiciones ambientales que influyen en su hábitat. El monitoreo de campo, junto con una clasificación supervisada, alcanzó una precisión del 86 % en la identificación de coberturas vegetales, según el índice de Kappa. Los resultados revelan que I. amancaes ocupa una superficie de 2,96 hectáreas, con una densidad de 18 a 26 individuos por metro cuadrado. La especie se distribuye principalmente en suelos y caminos (58,19 %), seguida de espacios descubiertos (23,43 %), cobertura vegetal somera (14,26 %) y cobertura vegetal densa (4,12 %). La metodología aplicada demuestra la eficacia de las herramientas de aprendizaje automático para el monitoreo de biodiversidad en desiertos de difícil acceso. Estos hallazgos no solo amplían el conocimiento ecológico de la especie, sino que subrayan la necesidad urgente de conservar y gestionar adecuadamente su hábitat para la gestión de caminos y rutas en favor de la conservación de la especie. Además, proporcionan una base sólida para desarrollar estrategias de conservación futuras en las lomas costeras, con el fin de beneficiar tanto a los ecosistemas como a las comunidades locales.

Los ecosistemas de páramo son esenciales para la regulación hídrica y la conservación de la biodiversidad en zonas montañosas. Sin embargo, enfrentan amenazas significativas debido al cambio climático y actividades humanas como agricultura, ganadería y minería. La ausencia de una delimitación clara y de sistemas de monitoreo continuo de sus coberturas dificultan su protección efectiva resaltando la necesidad de emplear técnicas digitales avanzadas que proporcionen información con alta exactitud y actualizada. Las redes neuronales convolucionales (CNNs, por sus siglas en inglés) se han posicionado como herramientas prometedoras para la segmentación semántica de imágenes satelitales. Esta investigación buscó evaluar el desempeño de dos modelos basados en arquitecturas de CNNs U-Net++ y DeepLabV3+ para clasificar las coberturas de la tierra en el complejo de páramos Tota-Bijagual-Mamapacha (TBM) en Colombia, utilizando imágenes Landsat 8 del periodo 2017 a 2019 y etiquetas del mapa nacional de coberturas 1:100 000 del IDEAM de 2018. Los resultados mostraron que U-Net++ alcanzó un kappa de 0,60, mientras que DeepLabV3+ obtuvo un kappa de 0,59. En las coberturas de páramo, U-Net++ logró un valor F1 del 78,43% para Herbazal y del 79,22% para Bosques, mientras que DeepLabV3+ alcanzó un valor F1 del 75% y 74,27%, respectivamente, confirmando el potencial de las CNNs para la clasificación de coberturas en estos ecosistemas. Aunque ambos modelos presentaron tiempos de procesamiento similares, el desbalance de clases y la dependencia de etiquetas consistentes afectaron su rendimiento en coberturas heterogéneas. Esta investigación establece una base metodológica para futuros estudios y sugiere abordar estas limitaciones para mejorar la eficiencia y la exactitud temática en la clasificación y monitoreo de ecosistemas de páramo.

Emerging technology has immense potential to increase the scale and efficiency of marine conservation. One such technology is large-area imaging (LAI), which relies on structure-from-motion photogrammetry to create composite products, including 3-dimensional (3-D) environmental models, that are larger in spatial extent than the individual images used to create them. Use of LAI has become widespread in certain fields of marine science, primarily to measure the 3D structure of benthic ecosystems and track change over time. However, the use of LAI in the field of marine conservation appears limited. We conducted a review of the coral reef literature on the use of LAI to identify research themes and regional trends in applications of this technology. We also surveyed 135 coral reef scientists and conservation practitioners to determine community familiarity with LAI, evaluate barriers practitioners face in using LAI, and identify applications of LAI believed to be most exciting or relevant to coral conservation. Adoption of LAI was limited primarily to researchers at institutions based in advanced economies and was applied infrequently to conservation, although conservation practitioners and survey respondents from emerging economies indicated they expect to use LAI in the future. Our results revealed disconnect between current LAI research topics and conservation priorities identified by practitioners, highlighting the need for more diverse, conservation-relevant research using LAI. We provide recommendations for how early adopters of LAI (typically Global North scientists from well-resourced institutions) can facilitate access to this conservation technology. These recommendations include developing training resources, creating partnerships for data storage and analysis, publishing standard operating procedures for LAI workflows, standardizing methods, developing tools for efficient data extraction from LAI products, and conducting conservation-relevant research using LAI.

Deforestation is a worldwide problem in watersheds, caused by anthropogenic activities that have been developed since colonization until today, producing large areas of deforested forests. The objective of this research was to determine deforestation through remote sensing in the hydrographic basins of the Portoviejo - Chone River. The geographic information system and the remote sensing technique with Landsat and Spot satellite images with a spatial resolution of 30 meters available for the study were used as an analysis tool. Finally, a total deforestation rate of the basins was obtained from 1998 to 2014 with a deforested forest area of 16,55% in the 16 years evaluated. The land use coverage classification of the basins was carried out using supervised classification where field verification was carried out for the identification of land cover and corroboration in satellite images. Subsequently, it was determined that the vegetation cover of the hydrographic basins for the period 1998-2000 is 332 782 ha, while for the period 2000-2008 a forest area of 241 167 ha was obtained, while for the period 2008-2014 is 331 728 ha. Furthermore, it was possible to obtain an overall reliability of the real and deduced coverage of 61,81%, which indicates that the land use classification of the hydrographic basins is admissible. The Brazilian legislation allows artisanal and small-scale gold mining thought vessels in the rivers as long as it has an artisanal and small-scale gold mining authorization issued by the National Mining Agency, which demands the presentation of the previous environmental authorization. The aim of this study is to analyze the information available on the production technique of gold mines in the Brazilian Amazon region, as well as the associated legal frameworks, in order to help improve understanding of the problem of this socio-economic activity in the country. In addition, the possibility of using tools from remote sensing to identify onboard gold mining, analyze the geographical distribution and occurrence of the activity was also analyzed. It was observed that there is a need to adapt regulatory instruments, improve the performance of the institutions responsible for issuing the appropriate permits, strengthen actions to combat illegal activity and inspect legalized activities, and develop public policies that are appropriate to the reality. Water quality is a critical issue in environmental management, and in this sense, remote sensing has acquired a relevant role as a highly effective evaluation tool. With its ability to obtain data remotely and on a large scale, remote sensing is presented as an innovative and reliable solution to monitor and analyze contamination in freshwater bodies in an increasingly accurate and timely manner. In this research, the correlation between physicochemical variables and data obtained by field spectro-radiometry was analyzed. The variables were conductivity, pH, total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrates and phosphates, taken at four different points in the Cuja river basin. 70 spectral signatures were captured, using the ASD FieldSpec HandHeld 2 handheld spectrum radiometer. Using the Pearson correlation coefficient and the R-squared coefficient of determination, the input data were analyzed in regression models with a confidence level of 95 %, showing a strong correlation between the pH variables of the water with a determination level of 92% and the wavelength of the visible spectrum of 400 nm. Likewise, it was determined that the 822 nm wavelength in the infrared range is highly effective for measuring nitrate levels with a determination coefficient of 90 %, while the 760 nm wavelengths of the red edge and 393nm of the visible blue were adequate to measure phosphates and suspended solids with coefficients of 86% and 82 %, respectively. Notably, in comparison, the conductivity and chemical oxygen demand (COD) variables exhibited coefficients of determination of 82% and 77 %, respectively. At the turn of the twentieth century, American logging companies backed by the US colonial regime initiated extensive extraction in Bikol, Philippines. Industrial infrastructure and the involvement of a newly assembled Bikolano workforce left a profound imprint on the region's landscape. This article discusses a collaborative archaeological project that used archival materials, place-name analysis, ethnographic interviews, discussions with local scholars, satellite mapping, and drone-mounted lidar scans of former industrial sites. Findings shed light on the enduring ramifications of American logging in the early 1900s on settlement patterns, the infrastructure of routes and mobility, the state of industries from Philippine independence in 1946 through the 1980s, and ongoing environmental hazards. These findings emphasize the legacy of American empire, reveal the role of Filipino logging workers in shaping the landscape through settlement decisions, and uncover intricate connections across a pan-Pacific American colonial frontier that was shaped by both extractive and settler colonialism. Vegetation indices (VIs) are designed to enhance the vegetation signal and minimize variations in solar irradiance and the effects of the plant canopy substrate. The time series of vegetation cover images present different frequency components, such as seasonal variations and long and short-term fluctuations, influenced mainly by climatic factors such as temperature and precipitation. Thus, the work aims to evaluate the influence of temperature and precipitation on the annual variation of NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index), RENDVI (red edge normalized difference vegetation index) and EVI (enhanced vegetation index), in an area of semideciduous seasonal forest, which covers part of the municipalities of Marmeleiro and Renascença, in the southwest of the State of Paraná. Seven images from the RapidEye satellite (level 3A) available for the year 2018 without cloud cover were used. Seasonal variation demonstrated that the highest values of vegetation IVs were found in summer, since temperature and precipitation contribute to raising them in the study area, with the response to temperature being faster than to precipitation. The EVI showed a better correlation with the minimum average temperature and the average temperature, because it is more influenced by the leaf area index (LAI), which is controlled by the seasons. On the other hand, NDVI and RENDVI are more influenced by precipitation and showed a greater correlation with accumulated precipitation between 30 and 60 days prior to imaging. Areas with potential to host clay deposits in Las Tunas province were identified by combining remote sensing data and geological information integrated in the Geographic Information System (GIS). Geological mapping, remote sensing and geospatial modeling techniques were used. The findings reveal a heterogeneous distribution of areas with moderate, high and very high potential to host clay deposits throughout the region, with significant concentrations in Manatí, Tunas, Jobabo, Colombia and Amancio municipalities. Este artículo comunica el hallazgo de un posible edificio de culto tardoantiguo durante los trabajos de prospección con métodos no invasivos del yacimiento de Santa Olalla (Olmillos de Sasamón, Burgos) en los años 2021-2023. Documentado a partir de la fotografía aérea en el espectro visible y la prospección geofísica mediante georradar, el edificio presenta una planta rectangular rematada en un ábside y dos estancias anexas cuya funcionalidad precisa aún debe clarificarse. El descubrimiento no se produjo de forma aislada, sino que se integra en el estudio del gran complejo arqueológico tardorromano de Santa Olalla. Su estudio contribuye a la discusión sobre el final de las grandes villas en el valle del Duero, la (re)ocupación de espacios de época romana durante el periodo visigodo y la organización política y territorial de este territorio entre la Antigüedad Tardía y la Alta Edad Media.

Las inundaciones se encuentran entre los peligros más frecuentes y extensos a nivel mundial y se espera un aumento de los eventos en todo el mundo debido al crecimiento de la población en las áreas expuestas, el crecimiento económico y el cambio climático (Rojas et al., 2022). El objetivo de este trabajo es comparar las capacidades de las bandas C y L de imágenes radar de apertura sintética (SAR, por su sigla en inglés) para cartografiar inundaciones, que permita, por una parte, el conocimiento y conservación de los humedales fluviales, y por otra, contribuir al ordenamiento territorial reduciendo la ocupación urbana en estas zonas expuestas a frecuentes inundaciones. Para ello, se generaron mapas de clases de cambio del coeficiente σ0 utilizando las imágenes SAR en dos frecuencias: Banda C y Banda L, en condiciones de no-inundación e inundación. Luego se analizaron los mecanismos de interacción dominante entre el coeficiente de retrodispersión σ0 y la vegetación presente que sumado a criterios estadísticos permitieron generar cartografías de inundaciones. Utilizando como verdad de campo puntos que reflejaron la extensión de la inundación en sitios indicados por los pobladores, así como cartografía de inundación realizada en la zona con anterioridad, se evidenció la superioridad de la Banda L para detectar la extensión de las inundaciones, sin embargo, ambos sistemas mostraron una importante sensibilidad a la condición de inundación.

Miguel Ángel Bertolami fue un pionero en la ecología del paisaje en la árida región de la Patagonia argentina. Nacido en 1956 en Coronel Suárez, Buenos Aires, Bertolami se graduó en Ciencias Biológicas en la Universidad Nacional del Sur y se mudó a Comodoro Rivadavia para dedicarse a su pasión por la Patagonia. Inició su carrera investigando la fitosociología y dendrocronología de los arbustos patagónicos, y luego realizó estudios de posgrado en Brasil y Francia, enfocándose en la erosión del suelo y la desertificación. Bertolami jugó un papel clave en el monitoreo y mitigación de la desertificación en la estepa patagónica, advirtiendo sobre los efectos del sobrepastoreo y el cambio climático. Fue pionero en el uso de imágenes satelitales y técnicas de teledetección para estudiar la degradación del paisaje y desarrollar modelos para un manejo sustentable de los campos ganaderos. Además, trabajó estrechamente con los productores locales para instalar estaciones meteorológicas en zonas remotas, recopilando datos cruciales para sus investigaciones. Como profesor en la Universidad Nacional de la Patagonia San Juan Bosco, Bertolami dedicó gran parte de su tiempo a la formación de estudiantes y a la divulgación científica, participando en programas de radio y dirigiendo la revista Naturalia Patagónica. Su trabajo ha dejado un legado significativo en la ecología de la región patagónica, destacándose por su enfoque en la conservación y el manejo sostenible de los recursos naturales en uno de los ecosistemas más frágiles del mundo.

Ante la creciente escasez del agua para la agricultura, el incremento de la demanda de alimentos y los futuros escenarios de sequía que nos plantea el cambio climático es indispensable diseñar nuevas tecnologías que contribuyan a un menor consumo de agua. En esta investigación se han empleado imágenes de alta resolución para estimar la evapotranspiración en arrozales aplicando el modelo de balance de energía METRICTM (Mapping Evapotranspiration at High Resolution using Internalized Calibration). Para ello, se monitorizaron 5900 m2 de cultivo bajo riego por inundación continua (IC) y 2600 m2 bajo la técnica de riego de alternancia humedecimiento y secado (AWD, por sus siglas en inglés), además de algunas parcelas con filtración lateral. Se realizaron 10 vuelos entre las etapas de macollamiento y floración, cinco vuelos con un VANT Matrice 210 con una cámara multiespectral Parrot Sequoia, y cinco vuelos con un Matrice 300 RTK equipado con una cámara térmica H20T. Se colectó información de campo de los índices de vegetación (NDVI e IAF), y lecturas de un radiómetro, para ajustar información de las imágenes multiespectrales y térmicas, respectivamente; y obtener los componentes del balance de energía en superficie. Se obtuvo valores medios para evapotranspiración del cultivo (ETc) de 6,34 ±1,49 y 5,84 ± 0,41 mm d-1 para riego IC y riego AWD, respectivamente, obteniéndose un ahorro de agua del 42% con una reducción del rendimiento en 14%, proporcionando una guía para la gestión adecuada del riego, sin embargo, se sugiere utilizar el modelo para optimizar el rendimiento obteniendo umbrales críticos para la aplicación óptima de AWD frente a la escasez del recurso hídrico.

This article describes a series of steps to integrate multiple modes of archaeological mapping in arid and agricultural settings. We use the coastal region of Peru as a case study and share our recent field experience at Cerro San Isidro, a multicomponent hill site located in the agriculture-intensive and mid-elevation (about 500 m asl) Moro region of the Nepeña Valley. In June and July 2022, we spent eight weeks deploying a combination of drone aerial imagery, pedestrian GPS reconnaissance, and GPR survey to map the surface and subsurface features at the site and in the adjacent agricultural fields. Our efforts suggest that the ancient settlement extended over an area of at least 50 ha, well beyond the visible surface architecture. Using a multimodal approach to confirming the partial destruction of archaeological vestiges by modern agricultural encroachment is both time-effective and noninvasive. The article offers insights from our experience, including the sequence of field operations, technical troubleshooting, and the collection and integration of datasets. We discuss the methodological potential and implications of this combination of multimodal mapping and its deployment in coastal Peru, a region that, like many others in the world, is increasingly subject to rapid agricultural expansion and other anthropogenic developments. El artículo trata sobre la expresión espacial de la relación entre los procesos de crecimiento y expansión de la ciudad y se focaliza en las recientes dinámicas de este sistema complejo que consume territorio, transformándolo según diversos intereses. El rol de las ciudades intermedias como sistemas complejos para hacer frente a los efectos del cambio climático es estratégico, por lo que la construcción e implementación de instrumentos de ordenamiento territorial que organicen estos territorios relacionales entre lo urbano y lo rural-natural es urgente. El objetivo de este trabajo es comprender la relevancia de estas ciudades como áreas capaces de ensayar instrumentos que se asienten en la construcción de indicadores de biodiversidad para ordenar territorios en contextos de cambio climático. Se seleccionaron dos casos de estudio: las ciudades de Córdoba y Mendoza. Se utilizaron técnicas de teledetección para el cálculo del índice de vegetación normalizada escalada para las áreas rurales-naturales de ambos casos. Los resultados del indicador se contrastaron con clases de cobertura de suelo producto de una clasificación supervisada. Las áreas sobre las que se observaron los valores de productividad más elevados se asociaron a paisajes de gran diversidad biológica y gran proximidad a la ciudad consolidada.

La producción de sedimentos por erosión hídrica es un tema de gran interés debido a que su desconocimiento puede representar graves peligros para las comunidades e infraestructuras cercanas. En los últimos años se han desarrollado varios métodos para cuantificar los sedimentos, pero su complejidad, precisión y exactitud varía dependiendo del enfoque empleado. Sin embargo, muchos de estos modelos requieren de la utilización de extensas series temporales de precipitaciones, pero, en Ecuador, las estaciones meteorológicas presentan una preocupante carencia de datos y su distribución espacial no es homogénea, lo que genera una incorrecta estimación de las lluvias en el territorio analizado. Para resolver este problema, es posible utilizar metodologías que empleen información ráster satelital. El objetivo de la presente investigación fue estimar los volúmenes de sedimentos en las cuencas hidrográficas de la provincia de Manabí, mediante la implementación del modelo RUSLE, a través de un procedimiento empírico que requiere de la utilización de la densidad aparente del suelo en sus tres texturas principales (arena, arcilla y limo). La metodología consideró la delimitación de las cuencas analizadas, la evaluación de datos ráster satelitales para determinar los seis parámetros del modelo RUSLE entre el año 2001 y 2020 y la estimación de la densidad aparente mediante un método innovador. La delimitación de las cuencas fue obtenida de fuentes regionales; la información satelital fue obtenida desde fuentes web oficiales; los valores típicos de la densidad aparente fueron obtenidos de fuentes a escala mundial; y la validación de los datos de densidad aparente se realizó mediante un muestreo en sitio. Los resultados permitieron identificar tasas de erosión del suelo que varían entre 0,10 ton ha-1 y 3252,22 ton ha-1, lo que generó una estimación de sedimentos entre 0,06 m3 año-1 y 692,43 m3 año-1 a nivel de píxel. La densidad aparente promedio fue de 1,49 ton m-3, lo que demuestra un elevado contenido de arena en las cuencas manabitas. La validación de datos reveló una excelente compatibilidad entre la metodología propuesta y el análisis convencional en sitio, que se ve reflejada en una diferencia promedio inferior al 3%. La información obtenida permitirá a las entidades gubernamentales competentes, establecer programas de mitigación para hacer frente a la pérdida del suelo por erosión hídrica y al control de la producción de sedimentos.

La dinámica fluvial se caracteriza por diversos fenómenos que ocurren a lo largo del cauce de un rio, entre estos los procesos de erosión, sedimentación y movimiento lateral que afectan la vida de los ribereños asentados en los márgenes de los ríos de las regiones tropicales. En este estudio evaluamos los índices de erosión, sedimentación y migración lateral del canal principal en tres sectores de la cuenca media del rio Amazonas en la Amazonía peruana. Los resultados muestran una gran vulnerabilidad a la erosión y migración lateral en el sector “Samaria” y en parte del sector “Iquitos”. El sector “Muyuy” en la margen izquierda presenta un escenario de probable avulsión o incursión del rio Amazonas sobre el rio Itaya. Los procesos analizados han sido interpretados e ilustrados mediante el uso de procedimientos y técnicas proporcionados por la Teledetección y los Sistemas de Información Geográfica.

La estimación de cosecha basada en índices espectrales conforma un elemento de decisión importante para quienes participan en la actividad agrícola; sin embargo, muchas interrogantes sobre su utilidad aún persisten. Los objetivos de esta investigación fueron: 1) relacionar propiedades radiativas del maíz forrajero (MF) y producción de biomasa mediante imágenes LANDSAT-8 y SENTINEL-2; y 2) seleccionar el índice de vegetación (IV) con mejor desempeño que permita modelar el rendimiento del MF para condiciones similares. El estudio se realizó en el ciclo PV-2019 con mediciones morfológicas en distintas etapas de crecimiento del MF y mediante muestreos aleatorios destructivos a los 72 dds para determinar magnitud de biomasa en laboratorio; los datos de biomasa se relacionaron con valores de reflectancia e IV de LANDAT-8 y SENTINEL-2 para estimar rendimiento mediante regresión lineal múltiple; ocho IV (NDVI, TVI TTVI, RDVI, RVI, RATIO, SAVI, MSAVI2) se evaluaron mediante evaluaciones cruzadas con base en estadísticos clave. Los resultados del análisis de regresión múltiple indicaron que el mejor modelo (R2 = 0.66) se obtuvo con datos de imágenes SENTINEL-2 a partir de las bandas 3 (α3 = 0.54-0.57 µm) y 8 (α8= 0.78-0.90 µm) con estimadores βi muy significativos (P < 0.05); RDVI presentó el mejor desempeño debido a una buena relación espacial entre los valores digitales ráster y la producción de biomasa verde producida con una asociación del 75.41%; en tanto que los indicadores estadísticos fueron R2= 0.75 y CME=17; con ambos recursos (Modelos de Regresión Múltiple e IV) se pronosticó el rendimiento a los 72 dds en un rango de 10.7 – 57.01 Mg ha-1. La conclusión es que SENTINEL-2 superó a LANDSAT-8 como herramienta libre para la evaluación de cultivos y estimación de biomasa debido a una mejor resolución espacial y temporal.

La cuenca ecuatoriana del Amazonas, a pesar de su relieve mayormente plano o ligeramente ondulado y su densa cobertura vegetal, enfrenta un riesgo latente de degradación de los suelos debido a la erosión, ocasionada por factores como la deforestación, la acción agropecuaria, la expansión urbana, la extracción de recursos naturales y el cambio climático. Este fenómeno, de no ser controlado, puede volverse catastrófico para el ecosistema amazónico, razón por la cual, es fundamental estimar, cuantificar y monitorear su proceso. La cuenca amazónica de Ecuador abarca alrededor de 120.000 km², lo que plantea la necesidad de un monitoreo efectivo de los procesos erosivos para respaldar la gestión sostenible de los suelos a nivel nacional e internacional. El uso de tecnologías geoespaciales y datos de satélite desempeñan un papel crucial en la observación y el monitoreo del medio ambiente. Estas tecnologías permiten el seguimiento de la superficie terrestre, la identificación de eventos medioambientales y la reducción de costos en la recopilación de datos. El acceso cada vez más amplio a imágenes de satélite ha impulsado el desarrollo de modelos para el monitoreo de la degradación y erosión de los suelos. El objetivo es desarrollar una herramienta de monitoreo espacio-temporal de la erosión hídrica laminar en la cuenca del Amazonas ecuatoriano. Este proyecto utiliza el método RUSLE (Ecuación Universal de Pérdida de Suelo Revisada) como base para evaluar la erosión. Diversos índices espectrales, como el Índice de Suelo Desnudo, son analizados a diferentes escalas espacio-temporales para identificar y clasificar áreas de alto riesgo de erosión, es decir, áreas con suelos desnudos propensos a la erosión. Se cuantifica la erosión potencial generada por estas áreas y se evalúan sus efectos en la cuenca amazónica ecuatoriana. Uno de los aspectos destacados de este proyecto es la creación de una aplicación web basada en Google Earth Engine (GEE). Esta aplicación permitirá el monitoreo continuo de la erosión, facilitando el acceso y la interacción de los usuarios con los datos y resultados obtenidos. Además, se prevé la posibilidad de expandir esta herramienta a otras regiones, ampliando su alcance y utilidad en la gestión de la erosión del suelo.

La Sierra ecuatoriana tiene orografía irregular con vientos fuertes y lluvias torrenciales. Las malas prácticas agrícolas y la deforestación han eliminado la cubierta vegetal acelerando los procesos erosivos. El objetivo del trabajo fue determinar los cambios en el grado de erosión de la Sierra norte y centro de Ecuador, en dos estudios, mediante el procesamiento de imágenes de los satélites Landsat 8, de los años 2017 y 2020 (norte y centro, respectivamente), y Landsat 5, del año 1986 (para las dos zonas), generando tres índices espectrales (Índice de vegetación ajustado al suelo - SAVI invertido, de brillo, de color) para cada imagen, con los cuales se produjeron composiciones a color RGB (bandas red, green, blue) para cada año. Conforme a estas composiciones, y a su clasificación no supervisada, se obtuvieron los mapas de erosión de los años 2017, 2020 y 1986, con las categorías severa, moderada, ligera y sin evidencia. Se hizo una homologación de áreas sin información, extrapoladas de la erosión pasada (1986) hacia el mapa de erosión de los años 2017 y 2020, con el fin de ver el avance o no de la erosión, y confirmar o descartar las hipótesis de la investigación. Los resultados obtenidos indicaron que para la zona norte existe un aumento de la erosión en un 16 %, aproximadamente, siendo el mayor incremento en el grado severo en erosión; en tanto para la zona centro, la erosión severa y ligera ha aumentado. Se probó, también, que la técnica utilizada para el estudio multitemporal entre 1986 y 2020, con base en índices espectrales, para evaluar la erosión actual de suelos, permitió monitorear el estado de este proceso en la Sierra centro y norte del Ecuador.

Este trabajo presenta un análisis de las tendencias de desarrollo urbano del sector norte de Bogotá, en un área de 6930 hectáreas que incluye el Plan de Ordenamiento Zonal del Norte (POZN) y parte de la reserva natural Thomas Van der Hammen (RTVH). El plan propuesto por la Alcaldía mediante el Decreto 088 de 2017 intenta dar coherencia a un desarrollo urbano que ha ocurrido de facto y con importantes consecuencias ecológicas y sociales mientras que la RTVH intenta proteger las características ecológicas de este sector entre los cerros y el rio Bogotá. El método consistió en analizar series de tiempo de temperatura de la superficie y de vegetación mediante técnicas de teledetección e indicadores radiométricos para identificar los cambios estructurales que ha experimentado el sector en términos de sus componentes biofísicos. Los resultados del análisis ponen en evidencia que el proceso de urbanización instalado en el sector norte de Bogotá es el determinante de las tendencias del espacio biofísico observadas, más allá de las figuras de protección legal que existen que incluyen el POZN y la RTVH. En el caso de la RTVH, el marco de protección no ha sido efectivo para preservar las características ecológicas que justificaron su creación. La inclusión de evidencia empírica como la mostrada en este trabajo en la planificación del desarrollo urbano es clave para avanzar en la protección activa del medio ambiente, más allá del discurso normativo.

Emerging technology has immense potential to increase the scale and efficiency of marine conservation. One such technology is large‐area imaging (LAI), which relies on structure‐from‐motion photogrammetry to create composite products, including 3‐dimensional (3‐D) environmental models, that are larger in spatial extent than the individual images used to create them. Use of LAI has become widespread in certain fields of marine science, primarily to measure the 3D structure of benthic ecosystems and track change over time. However, the use of LAI in the field of marine conservation appears limited. We conducted a review of the coral reef literature on the use of LAI to identify research themes and regional trends in applications of this technology. We also surveyed 135 coral reef scientists and conservation practitioners to determine community familiarity with LAI, evaluate barriers practitioners face in using LAI, and identify applications of LAI believed to be most exciting or relevant to coral conservation. Adoption of LAI was limited primarily to researchers at institutions based in advanced economies and was applied infrequently to conservation, although conservation practitioners and survey respondents from emerging economies indicated they expect to use LAI in the future. Our results revealed disconnect between current LAI research topics and conservation priorities identified by practitioners, highlighting the need for more diverse, conservation‐relevant research using LAI. We provide recommendations for how early adopters of LAI (typically Global North scientists from well‐resourced institutions) can facilitate access to this conservation technology. These recommendations include developing training resources, creating partnerships for data storage and analysis, publishing standard operating procedures for LAI workflows, standardizing methods, developing tools for efficient data extraction from LAI products, and conducting conservation‐relevant research using LAI. Landslides can cause severe damage to infrastructure and human life, making early detection and warning systems critical for mitigating their impact. In this study, we propose a machine learning approach for landslide detection using remote sensing data and topographical features. We evaluate the performance of several machine learning algorithms, including Tree, Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, Logistic Regression, Naïve Bayes, AdaBoost, Neural Network, SGD, kNN, and SVM, on a dataset of remote sensing images and topographical features from the Sikkim region in Malaysia. The results show that the SVM algorithm outperforms the other algorithms with an accuracy of 96,7 % and a F1 score of 0,97. The study demonstrates the potential of machine learning algorithms for landslide detection, which can help improve early warning systems and reduce the impact of landslides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main objective of this work is to describe the structure and conservation status of the forest of Prosopis flexuosa and Prosopis chilensis around Huaco and in the adjacent basin of the Bermejo River (department of Jáchal, San Juan). Currently, this genus has changed its name to Neltuma. To this end, baseline information for the conservation and sustainable management of these little-studied native forests was generated from an inventory that took into account dasonomic parameters such as conservation status and tree form. This information is linked to a forest typology based on satellite image classifications. The results are expressed in a proposed classification of four native forest types for this locality and its surroundings. This classification includes, in addition to the characteristics of the area covered by native forest, the identification of the different uses and disturbances that have impacted it in recent decades. Finally, different management and land-use planning proposals for these forests in northern San Juan are preliminarily discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rainfall is the main cause of serious social problems if there are no effective measures to mitigate its effects. Despite this, there is limited knowledge about the quality of the databases available in Manabí. The main objective of this work is to carry out a comparative analysis of rainfall databases in the province of Manabí-Ecuador, to determine a reliable source for the generation of rainfall estimates within the study area. The methodology was based on the identification of the available precipitation sources to later carry out a statistical and qualitative analysis between the selected databases. The GPM and GPCC satellite databases were obtained from their web servers; the INAMHI database was obtained from the corresponding institution; in statistical analysis it was validated by considering the Pearson R2 Coefficient; the qualitative analysis evaluated the main advantages and disadvantages of the information provided by each database. The results showed that the different sources of information had a similar spatial distribution, identifying the city of El Carmen as the sector with the highest rainfall intensity. The range of precipitations obtained from each database had significant differences. GPM strongly overestimated rainfall in lowlands, despite showing better qualities in the characteristics of the information provided. GPCC showed the best compatibility between the selected sources, but it presented certain limitations in its qualities. INAMHI was the database that registered the greatest limitations from the statistical and qualitative point of view. The use of GPCC is recommended for the estimation of rainfall in lowlands and GPM for the other sectors of the province of Manabí. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
