The experimental study of water–rock reactions under high-temperature and -pressure conditions is a useful approach to constrain controlling factors of the fluid composition in a natural hydrothermal system. Previous studies have focused mainly on the mid-ocean ridge fields, and the hydrothermal alteration of intermediate-to-felsic rocks has been less emphasized despite its potential importance in the fluid chemistry in an arc/back-arc basin setting. We examined the alteration processes of fresh rhyolite and andesite rocks collected from the middle and southern Okinawa Trough, respectively, at 325 °C and 300 bar (the estimated condition at the reaction zone in the fields), especially focusing on the behavior of silica between the solid and liquid phases. The experimental fluids are characterized by the high Si concentration up to 30 mM, indicating the substantial dissolution of volcanic glass in the analyzed rocks. The high Si concentration in the fluids was presumably buffered by amorphous silica, precipitated from the fluids as a precursor of hydrothermal quartz, during the experiments. Our results emphasize a previously overlooked role of volcanic glass/amorphous silica in the fluid composition in the Okinawa Trough and are consistent with the previous model of pumice replacement mineralization for the SMS deposit formation in the trough. Abstract Authigenic carbonates were recovered from the northern Okinawa Trough at 540–700 m water depth. Development of microbial communities and seepage dynamics driving the precipitation of authigenic carbonates remains poorly constrained, even though the source of methane-rich fluids, formation of Fe-rich carbonates, and the potential driving forces were previously reported. Here, petrologic observations, stable carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions, mineralogy, and lipid inventories of authigenic carbonates from the northern Okinawa Trough were analyzed. The carbonate minerals were comprised predominantly of aragonite, high-magnesium calcite, and siderite. The presence of molecular fossils diagnostic for anaerobic methane oxidizing archaea (ANME) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) with pronounced 13C depletions (as low as −134‰), together with highly negative δ13C carb values (as low as −55.8‰), suggest that the carbonates precipitated from anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) with microbial methane as the predominant carbon source. The difference between measured and calculated δ18O carb values (based on 0‰ of sea water δ18O vs V-SMOW) was higher than +3‰ in one of the carbonates (GGD16), reflecting an origin from gas hydrate dissociation. Most of the carbonates revealed δ18O offsets between measured and calculated values within +3‰, or a lower measured δ18O than calculated value, suggesting a mixture of methane-derived carbonates (low δ13C/high δ18O) and detrital origin carbonates (high δ13C/low δ18O). Biomarker patterns varied significantly among samples. A suite of 13C-depleted biomarkers indicated the predominance of an ANME-1 assemblage for all samples, suggesting carbonates formed at low to medium methane flux. The predominance of ANME-1, abundant detrital minerals, and allochthonous biomarkers, as well as low carbonate contents indicate that most samples formed at greater depth within the sediment column. Only one carbonate sample in this study is interpreted to have precipitated at relatively shallower depth, as indicated by the occurrence of crocetane, dominance of aragonite, and higher overall carbonate content. Many samples of hydrothermal sulfide minerals from the Okinawa Trough yield 234 U– 230 Th radioactive disequilibrium ages that are inconsistent with the ages of coexistent barite obtained using electron spin resonance (ESR) method. These results contrast strongly against results obtained for the Southern Mariana Trough, for which the U–Th radioactive disequilibrium ages are roughly consistent with the ESR ages. Sulfide minerals from the Okinawa Trough show large variation in U and Th abundances, suggesting open-system behavior. We infer that the interaction of hydrothermal fluids with thick terrigenous sediment caused large-scale migration of U and Th in the Okinawa Trough. The ( 234 U/ 230 Th) – ( 232 Th/ 230 Th) plots for the sulfide samples from the Hatoma Knoll and the Izena Hole show two mixing trends for each site. Anaerobic oxidation of methane and sulfate reduction was studied in the pore waters of four cores at two stations of the middle Okinawa Trough. Pore water vertical distributions of sulfate, methane, sulfide, total alkalinity, ammonium, and phosphate were determined in this study. Our results show strong linear sulfate concentration gradients of 6.83 mmol m in Core A and 5.96 mmol m in Core C, which were collected from two stations. Concurrent variations of methane, total alkalinity and hydrogen sulfide all exhibit steep increases with depth at both cores, which indicate active methane seep activities around two stations. Pore water ammonium and phosphate concentrations reveal minor influences of organic matter degradation on sulfate reduction at two stations. Sulfate methane interface (SMI) was extrapolated from linear sulfate profiles in methane seep cores. Shallower SMI depths (A: 4.9 mbsf; C: 5.4 mbsf) indicate strong methane fluxes and active anaerobic oxidation of methane in the underlying sediments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The late Quaternary paleoceanography and paleoenvironment in the Okinawa Trough, East China Sea, have been well reconstructed over the last decade, while in contrast the provenance of terrigenous sediments that have accumulated there remains enigmatic. In this study, rare earth elements (REE) were used to investigate provenance changes in sediments from Core DGKS9604, taken from the middle Okinawa Trough. Discrimination plots based on REE fractionation parameters suggest that the cored sediments have variable provenances over the last 30ka, with the lower part (ca. 31–8.2ka) ultimately originating mostly from the Changjiang (Yangtze River) and the upper part (7.1–0ka) primarily from Taiwan. During the Last Glacial Maximum and early deglacial period, sea level was low and the main stream of the Kuroshio Current was deflected to the east of the Ryukyu Islands. As a result the Changjiang-derived sediments might have dominated sedimentation of the middle Okinawa Trough. However, since about 7ka the main stream of the Kuroshio Current strengthened in the area of the trough, as sea level approximated the modern position. This caused near-bottom transport of fine-grained sediments from the continental margin to the trough to become weak and instead, Taiwan-derived terrigenous sediments dominated in the middle trough. The changing provenances of terrigenous sediments into the middle Okinawa Trough are closely related to the evolution of oceanic circulation and sea level in the East China Sea. Two tephra layers in the core have distinct REE compositions and correlate well with two volcanic eruptions at 7.6 and 25.8ka in southern Japan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A piston sediment core E017 from the middle-southern Okinawa Trough was investigated. A preliminary study of the deep-water evolution since 18 cal. ka BP was performed based on the quantitative census data of benthic foraminiferal fauna, together with planktonic foraminiferal oxygen and carbon isotope, AMS14C dating, and the previous results achieved in the southern Okinawa Trough. The result shows that the benthic fauna was dominated by Bulimina aculeata (d′Orbigny), Uvigerina peregrina (Cushman), Hispid Uvigerina and Uvigerina dirupta (Todd) during the glaciation-deglaciation before 9.2 cal. ka BP, while Epistominella exigua (Brady), Pullenia bulloides (d′Orbigny), Cibicidoides hyalina (Hofker), Sphaeroidina bulloides (d’Orbigny) and Globocassidulina subglobosa (Brady) predominated the fauna in the post-glacial period after 9.2 cal. ka BP. The benthic foraminifera accumulation rate (BFAR), paleoproductivity estimates and benthic foraminiferal assemblage conformably indicate that surface water paleoproductivity and organic matter flux during the glaciation-deglaciation were higher than those of the post-glacial period in the middle-southern Okinawa Trough, and gradually enhanced from the southern to the central Okinawa Trough during the glaciation-deglaciation, which could be caused by the discrepancy of the terrigenous nutrients supply. High abundances of E. exigua, an indicator of pulsed organic matter input, after 9.2 cal. ka BP may indicate that the intensity of seasonally riverine pulsed flux during the post-glacial period was stronger than that of the glaciation-deglaciation period, and the seasonal influx in the central trough might be stronger than in the south. The temporal distributions of the typical species indicating bottom water oxygen content and ventilation condition show that the ventilation of the bottom water during the post-glacial period is more active than the glaciation-deglaciation, which reflects that the evolution of the intermediate and deep waters of the northwestern Pacific during the last glaciation has no evident influence on the deep-water of the middle-southern Okinawa Trough. Additionally, the variations in agglutinated benthic foraminiferal abundance and other carbonate dissolution proxies indicate that carbonate dissolution gradually increased since the last 18 ka in the Okinawa Trough and rapidly enhanced at 9.2 cal. ka BP. This article presents the evidence in support of the direct magma degassing as the principal mechanism of volatiles releasing into the hydrothermal fluids in the Okinawa Trough, as contrasted to the argument for the hydrothermal stripping of volatiles from the volcanic rocks. Laser Raman microprobe and stepped-heating techniques are employed to determine the compositions and contents of the volatiles in pumices in the middle Okinawa Trough. The results show that the volatiles are similar to the gases in the hydrothermal fluids and hydrothermal minerals in composition, the mean percent content of each component and variation trend. This indicates the direct influence of magma degassing on the hydrothermal fluid. In addition, the contents of volatiles in pumices are rather low and do not support the hydrothermal stripping as the main mechanism to enrich the fluids with gases. The results are consistent with the idea that the direct magma degassing is more important than hydrothermal stripping in supplying gases to the hydrothermal fluids in the Okinawa Trough. The Okinawa Trough is located between the shelf-sea area of the East China Sea and the deep-sea area of western Pacific Ocean. More than 60 chemical elements in the sediments from the shelf area of the East China Sea, the Okinawa Trough and western Pacific Ocean were determined by advanced techniques including neutron activation analysis, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, atomic fluorescence spectrometry and atomic absorption spectrometry. Quantitative comparisons of the element abundances of the sediments were made in terms of the enrichment coefficients ( K) of the elements. K > 1.5 indicates enrichment (K = 1.5-2, weak enrichment; K = 2-4, strong enrichment) and K > 4, anomalous enrichment. The results show that the Okinawa Trough sediments are characterized by Hg anomaly and the enrichment of such elements as Au, Ag, Se, Te, Sb, Cd, Mn, Mo, etc. Detailed studies show that the excess Hg comes from hydrothermal solutions rather than from the continent, sea water, marine organisms, cosmic dust or volcanic rocks. Attributed to modern hydrothermal activities on the sea floor, Hg anomaly can be used as a geochemical indicator of modern seafloor hydrothermal activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
