There are one hundred kinds of Chinese silence: the silence of unknown grandfathers; the silence of borrowed Buddha and rebranded Confucius; the silence of alluring stereotypes and exotic reticence. These poems make those silences heard. Writing back to an “orientalist” tradition that has defined modern American poetry, these 100 Chinese silences unmask the imagined Asias of American literature, revealing the spectral Asian presence that haunts our most eloquent lyrics and self-satisfied wisdom. Rewriting poets from Ezra Pound and Marianne Moore to Gary Snyder and Billy Collins, this book is a sharply critical and wickedly humorous travesty of the modern canon, excavating the Asian (American) bones buried in our poetic language.

The volume aims at a conceptualisation of the relations between postcolonial theory and crisis as well as to the crisis of postcolonialism and the ways in which it can respond to contemporary issues, trying to understand, situate, and analyse postcolonial theory in the face of neo-liberalism, neoimperialism, and neo-colonialism – the relation between ‘post’ and the increasing use of ‘neo’ isindeed in itself part and parcel of the question.

This open access book illustrates the key steps and procedures of developing mental health scales into linguistically and culturally appropriate translations. Through illustrative case studies, we demonstrate that traditional forward and backward translation have significant methodological limitations when applied in mental health scale translation, such as linguistic and cultural inaccessibility and inaccuracy in the clinic. Our book will stimulate more academic debates and further systematic research into the significant, interdisciplinary area of mental health translation, which has been underexplored in Translation Studies.

What does it mean to be Norwegian, and who can call themselves Norwegian in today's globalized and multicultural Norway? These questions are increasingly being discussed in public discourse and social media channels. The authors of Norwegianness in Flux investigate how we define ‘Norwegianness’ and who has access to it, who is or is not recognized as Norwegian, and how frameworks for Norwegian identity are created, maintained, and challenged. An important premise for the authors is that people have a fundamental need for a sense of belonging. A generation of children and young people with family backgrounds from other countries growing up in Norway today cannot be defined as somehow outside or separate from Norwegian society. For some, Norway is the only cultural frame of reference and only homeland they have known. The contributions in this anthology explore, critique, and expand our understanding of Norwegianness in today's heterogeneous society. The authors challenge notions of Norwegianness precisely by viewing Norwegianness as in a constant state of flux. Ausgangspunkt dieses Konferenzbands im Open Access ist die Frage nach den Bedingungen, die dafür verantwortlich zeichnen, dass überhaupt und in welcher Form in der Frühen Neuzeit übersetzt wird. Anders formuliert geht es um die grundsätzliche Frage danach, warum bestimmte Texte, Bilder, Zeichenkomplexe etc. eine Übersetzung erfahren, während andere unübersetzt bleiben (müssen). Welche Faktoren nehmen schließlich – im positiven Fall – Einfluss auf die konkrete Ausgestaltung von Übersetzung im Sinne des Übertragungsprozesses von einem semiotischen und kulturellen System in ein anderes? In diesem Zusammenhang kommt ein doppeltes Politikverständnis zum Tragen: einerseits geraten Übersetzungspolitik(en) im Sinne des Kon­zepts der Translation Policy in den Fokus und mit ihnen soziokulturelle, ökonomische und interkulturelle Ein­fluss­faktoren. Andererseits geht es – spezifischer – um Über­setzungen im Kontext politischer Verhandlungs- und Aushandlungsprozesse und somit um den Zusammenhang zwischen Politics und Translation. The point of departure for this conference volume is the question of what conditions are responsible for whether a translation happens at all. Why are certain texts, images, and sign systems translated while others (must) remain untranslated? And what factors influence the form a translation takes in the process of conveying words, images, or signs from one semiotic, cultural system to another? These questions concern both translation policy – that is, the socio-cultural, economic, and intercultural factors that influence translation processes – and the politics of translation in the specific context of political negotiation processes
