Common laboratory parameters are crucial in aiding coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) case detection. This study aimed to determine the differences between laboratory parameters in (1) COVID-19 versus non-COVID-19 pneumonia, and (2) severe versus non-severe COVID-19 cases.Studies were collected until March 2020, and retrieved parameters include leukocyte, neutrophil, thrombocyte, and lymphocyte counts in addition to C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT) and D-dimer levels. In the presence of heterogeneity, the random-effect model (REM) was used instead of the fixed-effect model (FEM).Seven studies in the first analysis showed significantly lower leukocyte, neutrophil and platelet counts in COVID-19 pneumonia (SMD = -0.42, 95%CI -0.60 to -0.25,In conclusion, thrombocyte count is key in both diagnosis and prognosis. Low leukocyte and neutrophil counts are markers of COVID-19 infection, but contrastingly higher counts indicate progressive COVID-19. And although lymphocyte, D-dimer and CRP levels did not demonstrate diagnostic value, all indicate severity of COVID-19. Confirmation of these findings should be performed in future studies.Los parámetros comunes de laboratorio son cruciales para ayudar a la detección de casos de enfermedad por coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19). Este estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar las diferencias entre los parámetros de laboratorio en: 1) COVID-19 versus neumonía no COVID-19, y 2) Casos severos versus no severos de COVID-19.Los estudios se recolectaron hasta marzo de 2020, y los parámetros recuperados incluyen recuentos de leucocitos, neutrófilos, trombocitos y linfocitos además de los niveles de proteína C reactiva (PCR), procalcitonina (PCT) y dímero-D. Los recuentos bajos de leucocitos y neutrófilos son marcadores de infección por COVID-19, pero los recuentos contrastantemente más altos indican COVID-19 progresivo. Y aunque los niveles de linfocitos, dímero D y PCR no mostraron valor diagnóstico, todos indican la gravedad de COVID-19. La confirmación de estos hallazgos debe realizarse en futuros estudios.

The trend of dengue virus infection in Indonesia has changed from children to older groups. Some studies suggested that different gender might affect the different progression of dengue infection, but its mechanism was unclear. This study analyzed the difference by evaluating the daily thrombocyte count pattern. An analytic observational study with a retrospective design was conducted using the secondary data collected from medical records in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya during 2017-2018. The samples were adult patients in the age range of 18-55 years old with DHF but without comorbidity or coinfection. The total number of samples was 40 patients. The average of thrombocyte count in both male and female patients decreased since the 3 rd day of illness and reached the lowest level on the 6 th day of illness then increased on the 7 th day but did not reach the normal range. Although the majority of thrombocyte count in females was lower than males, there was no significant difference in thrombocyte count pattern between them. Background Nephrotic syndrome (NS) is the most common renal disease among children, and contributes to life-threatening complications such as thromboembolic disease. Platelets are considered to be important agents in thrombotic events among NS patients. The gold standard assessment for platelet aggregation is the use of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) agonist, however, it is expensive and not accessible in smaller health facilities. Thus, other thrombosis parameters are needed. Previous studies suggested that low albumin increased the risk of thrombosis in NS patients. Objective To assess for a possible correlation between albumin level and platelet count as well as platelet aggregation. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted in children with nephrotic syndrome who were admitted to the Pediatric Nephrology Department in Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, Bandung, West Java, from November 2017 to March 2018. Subjects were selected by consecutive sampling. Serum albumin, platelet count, and platelet aggregation were measured. Statistical analysis was conducted by Spearman’s test. Results A total of 32 patients participated in the study, with mean age of 109 (SD 7.4) months. Most subjects were male (56%). Subjects’ mean serum albumin level was 2.06 (SD 1.23) g/dL; mean platelet count was 453,062.5 (SD 187,443.90)/mm3; and mean platelet aggregation values for ADP agonist concentrations of 10, 5, 2.5, and 1 mM were 86.8 (SD 8.63)%, 82.4 (SD 15.33)%, 66.6 (SD 24.90)%, 34.95 (SD 31.69)%, respectively. The purpose of this study was to prove that administration of guava juice could improve thrombocyte count in mice that have thrombocytopenia after induced by chloramphenicol. We were used 24 mice as samples divided into 4 groups : KS group (given aquades for 12 days), KN group (induced by chloramphenicol for 7 days, then aquades on next 5 days), group P1 (induced by chloramphenicol for 7 days then guava juice 5 g/ml concentration on 5 next day); and group P2 (induced by chloramphenicol for 7 days then guava juice 10 g/ml concentration on the next 5 days). Recent studies showed that guava leaf extract can increase the thrombocyte count in rats. The present study aimed to determine the effect of guava leaf juice in increasing the number of megakaryocytes in the bone marrow of thrombocytopenic mice.MethodsThis study was of experimental design. The study subjects were 24 mice (Mus musculus). The mice were randomly divided into four groups that were subjected to intervention for 14 days. Objective: Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is the most common cause of pediatric thrombocytopenia. It is usually a self-limiting disease; however, 20-30% of cases become chronic. In this study, we aimed to investigate pediatric ITP cases’ outcomes and whether there are any factors affecting chronicity. Methodology: We analyzed retrospectively our 184 newly diagnosed pediatric ITP cases. Thrombocytopenia was defined as chronic ITP if it persists after 12 months. We evaluated the role of clinical and laboratory findings of patients and treatment modalities in the chronicity of ITP. Results: The mean age of patients was 5.4 ± 4.75 years at diagnosis. As first-line treatment, 87 (47.3%) of patients were given Intravenous Immune Globulin, 65 (35.3%) of patients were given methylprednisolone, and 32 (17.4%) of patients were followed without any medication. Chronic ITP developed in 39 patients (21.1%). Chronic ITP development rate was 20.19% in boys and 22.5% in girls (p=0.7). Aim: To investigate both maternal and umbilical cord adropin levels in patients with preeclampsia and the possible relations with its severity and perinatal outcomes. Materials and methods: In this study, a total of 38 preeclamptic and 40 age-matched healthy pregnant women between January and June 2016 were included. Serum and cord adropin levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: The maternal and umbilical cord adropin levels were significantly lower in the preeclamptic group compared to controls [71.19±22.21 vs. 100.76±27.02 ng/L and 92.39 (59.77:129.89) vs. 106.20 (74.42:208.02) ng/L, P Conclusion: The present study is the first to demonstrate a significant association between maternal and umbilical adropin levels and the presence and severity of preeclampsia. Adropin might be a useful parameter for predicting the presence and severity of preeclampsia.

BACKGROUND A marked decrease in thrombocyte count was observed between subsequent measurements of the same EDTA blood sample in several minipigs, but little information was available explaining this finding. OBJECTIVES The objective was to evaluate the impact of several preanalytic variables on thrombocyte counts in minipigs, in order to improve understanding of the in vitro thrombocyte decrease observed. MATERIALS AND METHODS Hematology blood samples from male and female Gottingen minipigs were collected using EDTA or citrate as an anticoagulant. Samples were stored under different conditions (room temperature, 4°C, or 37-38°C) and were analyzed approximately 0.5 to one h, 3.5-4 h, 7-7.5 h, and 28-29 h after collection. RESULTS In EDTA blood samples from male minipigs stored at room temperature, there was a progressive thrombocyte decrease over time up to -71% after 29 h, caused by in vitro aggregation. In females, no consistent change was seen up to 7.5 h, but there was a decrease up to -47% after 29 h. Thrombocyte count was most stable during storage at 4°C. No consistent marked decrease in thrombocyte counts was seen for citrated blood at room temperature, although such a decrease was present in a few individual animals. CONCLUSIONS Study results provide evidence for an anticoagulant-dependent pseudothrombocytopenia in minipigs progressing over time and depending on the storage temperature of the blood sample. It is therefore recommended to perform thrombocyte counts as soon as possible after blood collection, and in case of low counts, investigate for the presence of artifactual platelet clumping.

Hypercoagulability may explain the increased risk of thromboembolic cerebrovascular events in patients with migraine. Thrombocytes play a crucial part in the coagulation process, and some studies have demonstrated hyperaggregation of thrombocytes in adult migraineurs. We aimed to compare thrombocyte count between pediatric patients with migraine or tension-type headache and to evaluate the correlation of thrombocyte count with headache parameters. The electronic database of a tertiary pediatric headache clinic was retrospectively searched for all children and adolescents diagnosed with migraine or tension-type headache in 2016-2018. Data on thrombocyte counts were collected from the medical files and compared between the groups by parametric and nonparametric statistical tests. The cohort included 299 patients, 176 girls (59.0%) and 123 (412.0%) boys, of mean age 12.2 ± 3.4 years; 198 had migraine and 101 had tension-type headache. Among the laboratory parameters evaluated, a significantly lower mean thrombocyte number was found in the migraine group than in the tension-type headache group (282 ± 60 vs 304±71 ×103/μL, P = .004). Within the migraine group, there was a significant negative correlation between the thrombocyte count and the duration of headache attacks in hours ( P < .05). No significant between- or within-group differences were found in other laboratory parameters. The low relative thrombocyte count in pediatric headache clinic patients with migraine and its negative correlation with duration of migraine suggest that migraine may be associated with a different underlying pathogenesis from tension-type headache.

Background Discrepancy between results of leukocyte and thrombocyte count by computerized and manual examination may exist Objective To determine the discrepancy between computerized and manual leukocyte and thrombocyte count. Methods The design was a randomized sampling cross sectional study. The blood sample was examined with computerized Cell Dyn 1400 instrument for the leukocyte and thrombocyte count. For manual examination, blood smear was performed to measure thrombocyte while leukocyte was measured in Improved Neubauer hemocytometer. The results of computerized examination were used as gold standard. Sensitivity, specificity, predictive values of manual count were calculated. The agreement of Kappa and Mc Nemar test were determined Results Blood specimens drawn from 100 patients with different kinds of diagnoses were examined using computerized and manual methods. In computerized group, 66% had normal leukocyte and 55% had normal thrombocyte count. In the manual group, 78% of subjects had normal leukocyte and 82% had normal thrombocyte count. From leukocyte examination, the sensitivity of manual count was 87.9%, specificity was 41.2%, and positive predictive value was 74.36 with the agreement of Kappa of 0.32 and Mc Nemar value of 0.036. From thrombocyte examination, the sensitivity was 96.4%, specificity was 35.6%, and positive predictive value was 64.6 with the agreement of Kappa of 0.41 and Mc Nemar value of 0.41. Conclusion The result of manual thrombocyte count was in accordance with computerized with the agreement of Kappa of 0.41. On the other hand, there was a discrepancy between manual in favor of computerized leukocyte count with the agreement of Kappa of 0.32 [Paediatr Indones 2003;43:95-98].

Introduction: Studies relating to first-line, early, and long-term eculizumab treatment and outcomes in children with atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) are scarce and unclear. The aim of this case-series study was to evaluate the outcomes of first-line, early, and long-term eculizumab treatment in our aHUS patients. Materials and Methods: We reviewed the data from four pediatric patients with aHUS who were treated with eculizumab. In three of them, eculizumab was used as a first-line therapy, and the follow-up period was ≥2 years in three patients. Results: Plasma exchange could not be performed in any patient. Plasma infusions were used only in Patient 1 (a 14-month-old boy) for 8 days without any response. Therefore, eculizumab was started on day 11 after admission. Patient 2 (a 16-month-old boy), Patient 3 (an 11-year-old girl), and Patient 4 (a 32-month-old girl) were treated with eculizumab as a first-line therapy, which was started 2–4 days after admission. The dosage of eculizumab was adjusted according to body weight. The hematologic parameters (the time frames were 3–17 days) and C3 (the time frames were 10–17 days) returned to normal in all patients after receipt of eculizumab. Although Patient 1 developed stage III chronic kidney disease, complete renal recovery occurred in Patients 2 and 4. Patient 3 also had reflux nephropathy with bilateral grade III vesicoureteral reflux and renal scars. Her creatinine clearance returned to the baseline value after receiving eculizumab. No complications related to eculizumab were observed in any patient during the follow-up period. Conclusion: Eculizumab can be successfully used as a first-line therapy in pediatric aHUS patients. We observed that the early initiation of eculizumab was associated with the complete recovery of renal function. © 2016, Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) is a myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasm with variable clinical course. To predict the clinical outcome, we previously developed a CMML-specific prognostic scoring system (CPSS) based on clinical parameters and cytogenetics. In this work, we tested the hypothesis that accounting for gene mutations would further improve risk stratification of CMML patients. We therefore sequenced 38 genes to explore the role of somatic mutations in disease phenotype and clinical outcome. Overall, 199 of 214 (93%) CMML patients carried at least 1 somatic mutation. Stepwise linear regression models showed that these mutations accounted for 15% to 24% of variability of clinical phenotype. Based on multivariable Cox regression analyses, cytogenetic abnormalities and mutations in RUNX1, NRAS, SETBP1, and ASXL1 were independently associated with overall survival (OS). Using these parameters, we defined a genetic score that identified 4 categories with significantly different OS and cumulative incidence of leukemic evolution. In multivariable analyses, genetic score, red blood cell transfusion dependency, white blood cell count, and marrow blasts retained independent prognostic value. These parameters were included into a clinical/molecular CPSS (CPSS-Mol) model that identified 4 risk groups with markedly different median OS (from >144 to 18 months, hazard ratio [HR] = 2.69) and cumulative incidence of leukemic evolution (from 0% to 48% at 4 years, HR = 3.84) (P < .001). The CPSS-Mol fully retained its ability to risk stratify in an independent validation cohort of 260 CMML patients. In conclusion, integrating conventional parameters and gene mutations significantly improves risk stratification of CMML patients, providing a robust basis for clinical decision-making and a reliable tool for clinical trials. © 2016 by The American Society of Hematology.

Thrombocytopenia observed after bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement has remained a puzzle to solve.To analyze thrombocytopenia occurring after bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement by comparison to mechanical aortic valve replacement and coronary artery bypass grafting procedures.The study was conducted retrospectively on a total of 297 patients who underwent bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement, mechanical prosthetic aortic valve replacement and coronary artery bypass grafting at the cardiovascular surgery department of our clinical center between January 2013 and September 2017. Preoperative and postoperative first 14-day thrombocyte levels of the patients were analyzed.The postoperative blood thrombocyte level decrease was found to be more significant in patients who underwent bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement than in patients who underwent mechanical aortic valve replacement and coronary artery bypass grafting (When compared to the patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting and mechanical prosthetic aortic valve replacement, postoperative thrombocytopenia was found to be more severe in patients who underwent bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement, with a dramatic decrease in thrombocyte count being observed on the postoperative second day. It was found that the thrombocytopenia recovers without causing any problem. We think that the shear forces may play a role in this recovery through washout of chemicals responsible for thrombocytopenia from the glutaraldehyde treated bioprostheses.Trombocytopenia stwierdzana po wymianie bioprotezy zastawki aortalnej pozostaje zagadką, która wymaga rozwiązania.Analiza trombocytopenii występującej po wymianie bioprotezy zastawki aortalnej w porównaniu z trombocytopenią po wymianie mechanicznej zastawki aortalnej i pomostowaniu aortalno-wieńcowym.Retrospektywnym badaniem objęto łącznie 297 pacjentów, u których przeprowadzono wymianę bioprotezy zastawki aortalnej, wymianę mechanicznej zastawki aortalnej i pomostowanie aortalno-wieńcowe na oddziale kardiochirurgii w ośrodku autorów od stycznia 2013 do września 2017 r. Analizowano poziom płytek krwi przed operacją i w ciągu pierwszych 14 dni po zabiegu.Stwierdzono większe pooperacyjne zmniejszenie poziomu płytek krwi u pacjentów po wymianie bioprotezy zastawki aortalnej niż u pacjentów po wymianie mechanicznej zastawki aortalnej i po pomostowaniu aortalno-wieńcowym (W porównaniu z pacjentami, u których przeprowadzono pomostowanie aortalno-wieńcowe i wymianę mechanicznej zastawki aortalnej, poważniejszą pooperacyjną małopłytkowość stwierdzono u pacjentów, którzy przeszli wymianę bioprotezy zastawki aortalnej, przy czym gwałtowne zmniejszenie liczby płytek krwi zaobserwowano w drugim dniu po operacji. Trombocytopenia ustępuje, nie powodując żadnych problemów. Naszym zdaniem w tym przypadku ważną rolę odgrywają siły ścinające poprzez eliminację lub wymywanie substancji chemicznych odpowiadających za trombocytopenię spowodowaną przez bioprotezy poddane działaniu aldehydu glutarowego.

Resumen: Introducción: El daño renal agudo (DRA) es una complicación grave en niños críticos. El objetivo de este estudio fue describir las características de esta patología en las Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos Pediátricos (UCIP) españolas e identificar factores de riesgo asociados con la mortalidad y la necesidad de depuración extrarrenal al alta. Pacientes y métodos: Estudio prospectivo observacional multicéntrico que incluyó niños de 7 días a 16 años de edad con DRA ingresados en UCIP. Se realizó un estudio univariante y multivariante de los factores de riesgo asociados con la mortalidad y necesidad de depuración extrarrenal al alta. Resultados: Se analizaron 139 casos de DRA. En el 60,1% de los casos fue necesaria la utilización de alguna técnica de depuración. La mortalidad durante el ingreso fue del 32,4% y el 15,1% de los supervivientes necesitaban diálisis al alta de la UCIP. En el estudio de regresión logística multivariante la trombocitopenia y los valores bajos de aclaramiento de creatinina fueron factores pronósticos que predijeron la necesidad de diálisis al alta. Ajustando por peso, las cifras elevadas de plaquetas y creatinina se relacionaron con una mayor supervivencia. Conclusiones: Los niños críticamente enfermos con DRA presentan una morbimortalidad elevada. La cifra de plaquetas y el aclaramiento de creatinina son marcadores de necesidad de diálisis al alta de la UCIP y la cifra de plaquetas, la creatinina sérica y el peso, marcadores de supervivencia. Abstract: Introduction: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a severe complication in critically ill children. The aim of the study was to describe the characteristics of AKI, as well as to analyse the prognostic factors for mortality and renal replacement therapy (RRT) in children admitted to Paediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) in Spain. Patients and methods: Prospective observational multicentre study including children from 7 days to 16 years old who were admitted to a PICU. A univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis of the risk factors for mortality and renal replacement therapy at PICU discharge were performed. Results: A total of 139 cases of AKI were analysed. RRT was necessary in 60.1% of cases. Mortality rate was 32.6%. At PICU discharge RRT was necessary in 15% of survivors. Thrombopenia and low creatinine clearance values were prognostic markers of RRT at PICU discharge. High values of platelets, serum creatinine and weight were associated with higher survival. Conclusions: Critically ill children with AKI had a high mortality and morbidity rate. Platelet values and creatinine clearance are markers of RRT at PICU discharge, whereas number of platelets, serum creatinine and weight were associated with mortality.

Although it is included in a benign disease group, bleeding complications may be mortal. With a better understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease, thrombopoietin receptor agonists, which came into use in recent years, seem to be an effective option in the treatment of resistant cases. This study aimed to retrospectively assess the efficacy, long-term safety, and tolerability of eltrombopag in Turkish patients with chronic ITP in the Aegean region of Turkey. Materials and Methods: Retrospective data of 40 patients with refractory ITP who were treated with eltrombopag in the Aegean region were examined and evaluated. Results: The total rate of response was 87%, and the median duration of response defined as the number of the platelets being over 50x10(9)/L was 19.5 (interquartile range: 5-60) days. In one patient, venous sinus thrombosis was observed with no other additional risk factors due to or related to thrombosis. Another patient with complete response and irregular follow-up for 12 months was lost due to sudden death as the result of probable acute myocardial infarction. Conclusion: Although the responses to eltrombopag were satisfactory, patients need to be monitored closely for overshooting platelet counts as well as thromboembolic events.

This paper presents an overview of the nuclear accident that occurred at the Mayak Production Association (PA) in the Russian Federation on 29 September 1957, often referred to as 'Kyshtym Accident', when 20 MCi (740 PBq) of radionuclides were released by a chemical explosion in a radioactive waste storage tank. 2 MCi (74 PBq) spread beyond the Mayak PA site to form the East Urals Radioactive Trace (EURT). The paper describes the accident and gives brief characteristics of the efficacy of the implemented protective measures that made it possible to considerably reduce doses to the exposed population. The paper also provides retrospective dosimetry estimates for the members of the EURT Cohort (EURTC) which comprises approximately 21 400 people. During the first two years after the accident a decrease in the group average leukocyte (mainly due to neutrophils and lymphocytes) and thrombocyte count was observed in the population. At later dates an increased excess relative risk of solid cancer incidence and mortality was found in the EURTC.

Drug-induced thrombocytopenia can be caused by various medications, most frequently, antibiotics. There have been reports of thrombocytopenia cases due to the usage of quinolone antibiotics, although moxifloxacin-related thrombocytopenia has been reported very rarely. The case is here presented of a 60-year old male with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who presented with complaints of progressively worsening dyspnea. After hospitalization, progressive thrombocytopenia was detected which had started on the 3rd day of moxifloxacin treatment. Other causes of thrombocytopenia were excluded and the thrombocyte count returned to normal after discontinuation of moxifloxacin.

Background/Aims: To investigate the relationship between gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) levels and histopathological status determined by biopsy in patients with chronic hepatitis B and C. Materials and Methods: Patients with chronic hepatitis B and C who were referred to the Uludag University Faculty of Medicine Gastroenterology outpatient clinic between January 2005-January 2011 and underwent liver biopsy were included in the study. Overall, 246 patients with hepatitis B and 151 patients with hepatitis C were enrolled. According to the evaluation based on the Ishak score, patients with a histological activity index (HAI) between 0-12 were defined as low activity, and those with an HAI between 13-18 were defined as high activity. In addition, patients with a fibrosis score of 0-2 were defined as low fibrosis, and those with a score between 3-6 were defined as high fibrosis; comparisons were made accordingly. Background: Malaria still presents as a major health problem in Indonesia and specifically in East Kalimantan. One common sign found in malaria patient is thrombocytopenia, the mechanism of which is still unclear. Several studies have suggested some mechanisms, one of which is splenomegaly. This study aimed to discover the association between thrombocytopenia and splenomegaly of malaria patients in East Kalimantan. Methods: This study was a descriptive retrospective study with clinical and laboratory data obtained from the medical records of malaria patients in four major public hospitals from January 2015 to July 2018. The association between thrombocytopenia with splenomegaly was analysed using Chi-Square test. Results: A total of 215 patients were included; 189 male (87.9%) and 26 female (12.1%). The etiologic agents found in these patients were Plasmodium vivax (43.2%), Plasmodium falciparum (42.8%), and mixed infection (Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax) (4.6%). The thrombocyte count was normal in 28 patients (13%) and decreased in 187 patients (87%). Among patients with thrombocytopenia, the percentage of mild, moderate and severe thrombocytopenia was 18.2%, 43.8% and 33%, respectively. Splenomegaly was found in only 11 patients (5.1%). We found no association between thrombocytopenia with splenomegaly (p=0.61). Conclusions: We conclude that splenomegaly, which was a rare clinical finding of these malaria patients, was not associated with thrombocytopenia.

Background: Thrombocyte is important and very essential component of blood and have significant role in maintenance of hemostasis. Thrombocyte count is an important investigation done in various acquired and congenital coagulable states which include conditions like pregnancy. Thrombocyte count is routinely done by automated hematology analyzer method. The automated hematology analyzer counters are not usually available at all centres especially in peripheral and rural side though thrombocytes can also be assessed from the peripheral blood smears, which can be easily and precisely done at any set up. Aim and objective of this study was to compare the thrombocyte estimation by peripheral blood smear method and automated hematology analyzer in pregnant women.Methods: Thrombocyte estimation was done from samples taken from 120 normal pregnant women between December 2018 to March 2019, where samples were Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetic acid (EDTA) anticoagulated. Thrombocyte was counted manually using PBS (Leishman stain) and hematology analyzer (Sysmex XN1000 series). Thrombocyte counts were expressed in Mean and standard Deviation. Statistical analysis was done by student’s t test using MS excel and SPSS version 17.Results: Thrombocyte count by PBS have mean value of 2.04 lacs/mm3 with standard deviation of 0.56 lacs/mm3 and by automated method have mean value of 1.89 lacs/mm3 and standard deviation of 0.71 lacs/mm3 with p value 0.010. Thus, there was no statistically significant difference found between two methods.Conclusions: Estimation of thrombocyte count on the basis of manual thrombocyte count is a reliable technique and can be used to validate automated thrombocyte counts. It can also be used in under resourced laboratories, where there are no automated counters of good precision available. In fact, all the tests showing abnormal thrombocyte counts must be reported only after cross examining on PBS.

Objective: Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a common bleeding disorder in childhood, characterized by isolated thrombocytopenia. The International Working Group (IWG) on ITP recently published a consensus report about the standardization of terminology, definitions, and outcome criteria in ITP to overcome the difficulties in these areas. Materials and Methods: The records of patients were retrospectively collected from January 2000 to December 2009 to evaluate the data of children with ITP by using the new definitions of the IWG. Results: The data of 201 children were included in the study. The median follow-up period was 22 months (range: 12-131 months). The median age and platelet count at presentation were 69 months (range: 7-208 months) and 19x10(9)/L (range: 1x10(9)/L to 93x10(9)/L), respectively. We found 2 risk factors for chronic course of ITP: female sex (OR=2.55, CI=1.31-4.95) and age being more than 10 years (OR=3.0, CI=1.5-5.98). Life-threatening bleeding occurred in 5% (n=9) of the patients. Splenectomy was required in 7 (3%) cases. When we excluded 2 splenectomized cases, complete remission at 1 year was achieved in 70% (n=139/199). The disease was resolved in 9 more children between 12 and 90 months. Conclusion: Female sex and age above 10 years old significantly influenced chronicity. Therefore, long-term follow-up is necessary in these children. Bulgular: İki yüz bir çocuğun verileri çalışmaya dahil edildi. Ortanca takip süresi 22 ay (12-131 ay) idi. Başvuru anında ortanca yaş ve trombosit sayısı, sırası ile 69 ay (7-208 ay) ve 19x109/L (1-93x109/L) idi. Hastalığın kronikleşmesi açısından iki risk faktörü saptadık: Kız cinsiyet (OR=2,55, CI=1,31-4,95) ve yaşın 10’dan büyük olması (OR=3,0, CI=1,5-5,98). Hayatı tehdit edici kanama, hastaların 5%’inde (n=9) görüldü. Splenektomi yapılması,7 hastada (3%) gerekti. İlk bir yılda splenektomi yapılan 2 hasta göz ardı edildiğinde, tam remisyon (CR) 70% (n=139/199) hastada görüldü. Hastalık, kronik ITP’li olguların 9’unda (%15; 9/60) daha tanıdan itibaren12 ile 90 ay içerisinde düzeldi. Sonuç: Kız cinsiyet ve yaşın 10’dan büyük olması, kronikleşmeyi belirgin olarak etkiledi. Aim: We aimed to investigate the relationships between metabolic syndrome (MS) and monocyte to high density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR). Methods: 762 patients (n = 371 MS present and n = 391 MS absent) were enrolled. Results: MHR was significantly higher [13.9 (10.5–18.1) vs 11.1 (8.0–14.8); p < 0.001], whereas LMR was significantly lower [4.5 (3.6–5.7) vs 3.6 (2.9–4.8); p < 0.001] in patients with MS. LMR [OR: 0.796 (95% CI): 0.711–0.892); p < 0.001], MHR [OR: 1.052 (95% CI: 1.018–1.088); p = 0.003] and C-reactive protein [OR: 1.048 (95% CI: 1.032–1.065); p < 0.001] remained as independent variables for the presence of MS. Conclusion: The present study shows that both LMR and MHR may be novel and useful indicators of MS.

The objective of this study was to compare circulating blood cell counts and morphology of three eel species: Muraena helena (moray), Conger conger (European conger) and Anguilla anguilla (European common eel). Moray and conger were collected from the Adriatic Sea at the Elaphite Islands near Dubrovnik, Croatia; common eels were collected in the Neretva River, Croatia. Hematological comparison was conducted using Natt-Harrick’s and May-Grünwald Giemsa staining methods. The hematocrit of moray and conger were similar, while common eel had higher values by 60%. Manual cell count showed that common eel had the highest erythrocyte count. Conger had a higher erythrocyte count than moray, with a higher percentage of proerythrocytes and senescent erythrocytes compared to moray and common eel. The leukocyte count was similar in common eel and moray and slightly lower in conger. The thrombocyte count was highest in conger and lowest in moray. In all three species, the neutrophil (heterophil) nuclei appeared as either circular or bi-lobed. Moray had the highest neutrophil (heterophil) percentage and a subtype with intensively basophilic cytoplasm appearing in a similar percentage as the normal type. In common eel, neutrophils (heterophils) were the only detected granulocytes. Basophils were detected in conger eels. Eosinophils were not detected in any of the sampled fish. The size of all cell types in moray was slightly larger than in other two species. In conclusion, our findings reveal major differences in the cell count and diversity in cell subtypes between three kin species of eels.

Introduction Brucellosis is a public health problem that is prevalent in several developing countries. Methods The clinical and laboratory characteristics of 164 cases of brucellosis in Bursa, Turkey, were retrospectively evaluated. Results The ages of the 164 patients ranged from 15-85 years. All of the patients underwent the Rose Bengal test and 163 (99.4%) patients tested positive. 122 (74.4%) patients were diagnosed with acute brucellosis, 31 (18.9%) with subacute brucellosis and 11 (6.7%) with chronic brucellosis. Focal involvement was found in 101 (61.6%) patients. Although patients with focal involvement had a higher white blood cell count (p = 0.002), those without focal involvement had higher aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase values, and lower platelet values (p = 0.005, 0.007 and 0.039, respectively). Spondylodiscitis was observed on imaging in 58 (66.7%) of the 87 patients who presented with back pain. Among the 118 patients who were examined within the first month of treatment, 79 (66.9%) responded to treatment. The relapse rate was 11.6% among all 164 patients. Conclusion Brucellosis should be considered as a differential diagnosis among patients who present with fever, and joint or back pain. Focal involvement should be investigated in the presence of leucocytosis, and subacute or chronic forms of brucellosis. To identify cases of spondylodiscitis, radiography should be performed in patients who present with back pain.

The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of haemostatic abnormalities in women with menorrhagia and to evaluate their effect on quality of life (QoL). The study population was composed of patients with menorrhagia seen in the outpatient clinic, having a score of >185 with a pictorial blood assessment chart. Structured questionnaires were used in the assessment of demographic characteristics and QoL, and patients were tested for bleeding disorders. Ninety women were recruited for the study. Bleeding disorders were detected in 40% of them: 11.1% had von Willebrand disease, 2.2% had low von Willebrand factor and 26.7% had platelet function disorders (PFD). In 22 (91.6%) cases with PFD the, defect was non-specific and impaired aggregation response to ristocetine (37.5%) was the most commonly detected problem. Bleeding disorders were not associated with any significant reduction in QoL (p >.05). Hereditary bleeding disorders may be the cause of unexplained menorrhagia even in the middle-aged women, but they had no prominent effect on QoL. © 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the role of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and mean platelet volume (MPV) as activation and inflammatory markers in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with nephritis. Patients and methods: A total of 108 SLE patients (8 males, 100 females; mean age 35.3 +/- 10.2 years; range 16 to 64 years) including 78 patients with renal involvement (8 males, 70 females; mean age 33.9 +/- 10.6 years; range 16 to 64 years) (SLEn+ group) and 30 patients without renal involvement (30 females; mean age 39.1 +/- 8.2 years; range 22 to 55 years) (SLEn-group) were included in this retrospective study. All patients' clinical characteristics and laboratory data which include erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, white blood counts, neutrophil counts, lymphocyte counts, platelet counts, and MPV levels were obtained from medical records. The laboratory data at the highest proteinuria periods of the patients with renal involvement were recorded. Results: Mean MPV (SLEn+ = 9.1 +/- 2.2, SLEn-= 7.9 +/- 1.2, p= 0.001) and NLR (SLEn+ = 5.9 +/- 5.9, SLEn-= 2.6 +/- 2.5, p< 0.001) values were significantly higher in lupus nephritis group. Besides, a positive correlation between NLR and C-reactive protein was found in lupus nephritis group (r= 1.97, p= 0.045). Based on receiver operating characteristic curve with area under the curve of 0.76, cutoff NLR value of 1.93 had 83% sensitivity and 54% specificity [95% confidence interval, 0.66-0.85] in differentiating SLE patients with or without nephritis. Conclusion: Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and MPV may be discriminative for lupus nephritis. Also, NLR may be a predictor of lupus nephritis. Both MPV and NLR values may be affected by a great number of factors; therefore, further prospective studies are needed to evaluate the use of these parameters in SLE.
