Quercetin is a polyphenol found mainly in fruits and vegetables. Many studies show that its supplementation increases physical efficiency. The purpose of this review is to summarize to date literature on whether quercetin may increase athletes' performance. Previous reports show that this polyphenol has an antioxidant, antidiabetic effect (by increasing GLUT4 expression in skeletal muscles), stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis, prevents obesity by, inter alia, inhibition of adipogenesis, and increases the maximal aerobic capacity. However, due to the many contradicting results, there is a need for further research especially with athletes as participants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
