This research focuses on classifying translated and non-translated Chinese texts by analyzing syntactic rule features, using an integrated approach of machine learning and entropy analysis. The methodology employs information entropy to gauge the complexity of syntactic rules in both text types. The methodology is based on the concept of information entropy, which serves as a quantitative measure for the complexity inherent in syntactic rules as manifested from tree-based annotations. The goal of the study is to explore whether translated Chinese texts demonstrate syntactic characteristics that are significantly different from those of non-translated texts, thereby permitting a reliable classification between the two. To do this, the research calculates information entropy values for syntactic rules in two comparable corpora, one of translated and the other of non-translated Chinese texts. Then, various machine learning models are applied to these entropy metrics to identify any significant differences between the two groups. The results show significant differences in the syntactic structures. Translated texts have a higher degree of entropy, indicating more complex syntactic constructs compared to non-translated texts. Information competence is essential in professional translation and interpreting. This paper gathers the views of professional translators and interpreters in Spain on information competence, by means of an exploratory qualitative study. A questionnaire composed essentially of open-ended questions was applied to gather data and the qualitative analysis software ATLAS.ti was used to code the results using thematic content analysis methods. The views provided by a sample of professional translators and interpreters (n = 156) on the importance of information competence were collected, together with their recommendations on this key competence for those who are starting their training in translation and interpreting. The study also explores the main information needs highlighted by professionals, the sources of information they use most frequently and how they verify information, and their opinions on the gender perspective (with explicit mention of inclusive language) as part of information competence in professional practice. The results show that professionals consider information competence to be absolutely essential in the framework of translation competence, and recommend reinforcing information literacy training in university undergraduate degree programmes. They have multiple information needs (from terminological to contextual) that make them turn to a wide range of information resources (mainly personal sources and online documentary resources), but they need to strengthen their knowledge for information evaluation. Regarding the gender perspective, professionals practically limit their answers to their opinions on inclusive language and, although most of them are in favour, some resistance is detected. From the diagnosis carried out in this research, opportunities for supporting information literacy instruction in undergraduate degrees and in continuing professional development are identified. This study aims to examine the appraisal of romanticism in autobiographical text from the perspective of translation study. The data were purposely taken from the autobiography of the first president of Indonesia, Sukarno, titled Sukarno, An Autobiography as told to Cindy Adams (1965) and its Indonesian translation (2014). The appraisal resources of romanticisms were evaluated by using Martin and White framework (2005) particularly in terms of attitude and graduation while the translation quality was assessed in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability (Nababan et al., 2012). This study reveals that appraisal devices contribute significantly to explaining romanticism through linguistic evidence of the attitude and graduation sub-systems. Appraisal theory, which has a great attention in investigating human emotions and feelings, is very appropriate to describe the characteristics of Sukarno's romanticism and its translated version. This article proposes a methodology to identify rhetorical energies that form within the diegetic timeline of movies and to translate these to creative sculpting of spacetime designs. In turn, the narrative manipulation of rhetorical spacetime correlates with that of the audience's emotional states. I achieved this by indexing fictional spacetime with movie barcodes to create a visual compression of sequential film frames into one solid image. I also discuss how patterns of spatial and temporal arrangement within the selected film trailer occurs. I utilise the short form movie trailer The Monster (2020) as my case study as it is a work that I co-directed. Essentially, I propose a method to show how temporal designs of a fictional dimension may be sculpted and intensified. For comparative purposes, I discuss a related study on Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s The Revenant (2015). I conclude that the spacetime relationships of the timeline exhibit a propensity to result in dramaturgic tension patterns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Translation research from the perspective of digital humanities is not only a methodology but also a research paradigm. The emergence of translation research from the perspective of digital humanities not only led to significant changes in translation research methods but also greatly expanded and deepened translation research. This article clarifies the definition of digital humanities in translation studies, traces the origin of digital humanities theory, sorts out the relevant research progress, discusses the application fields and advantages of digital humanities, and puts translation studies in the context of digital humanities development. By combing and analyzing the changes and developments, it discovers the development prospects of the new translation paradigm from the perspective of digital humanities so as to provide reference and inspiration for promoting the development of translation studies under the digital humanities approach. Transcreation is an inter-cultural and inter-linguistic activity, which has obtained particular academic interest recently. However, few studies have reviewed the current status quo on transcreation systematically, although transcreation has been applied in various fields such as literature and advertising translation. In this study, a systematic literature review is conducted to shed light on this topic by identifying and analysing genres, foci, methods, and theories related to transcreation. The databases cover Scopus, Web of Science and CNKI from 1995 to 2023. A total of 61 publications were identified with PRISMA 2020. The qualitative findings showed that (1) most studies of transcreation focus on literary and advertising, while other fields of audiovisual, news and political, training and interpreting need to be explored; (2) research foci of transcreation strategies, culture and ideology gain more attention while transcreation process and evaluation, localization and persuasion have not been much examined; (3) content analysis is most frequently adopted while other qualitative methods are less used. Besides, there is a lack of using quantitative and mixed methods; (4) systematical functional linguistics is often used as a pointcut to examine strategies of transcreation. Besides, multimodal social semiotics is used to explore transcreation through texts, pictures and videos. Other linguistic theories and cross-disciplinary theories remain unexplored in transcreation. Academic collaboration is an efficient way to boost research productivity. It has long been a common method in various disciplines, with extensive research on collaboration status. However, very little research has been undertaken to delve into the academic collaboration in the field of Translation Studies (TS). This study collects articles and reviews (book review excluded) from the 14 A&HCI-indexed international journals in this field from 2011 to 2021, and utilizes BibExcel, Pajek, and VOSviewer to conduct a social network analysis in order to determine authorial collaboration patterns and trends in TS via a quantitative and qualitative analysis. The results reveal that academic collaboration has become a common practice with an increased collaboration rate from 23.25% to 39.58% over the last 11 years. Authors and institutions from developed countries have taken the central position in the academic collaboration network. Both specialized and literary translations are the focus of research, with the former taking the major trend. Finally, some implications are proposed to encourage more academic collaboration in TS. This article reports on the intellectual structures and research trends in the field of Translation Studies (TS). Co-citation analysis and keyword analysis were conducted based on research articles in eleven prestigious TS journals indexed in Web of Science-Social Science Citation Index (WoS-SSCI) database from 2007 to 2021. In general, results indicate that TS has continued to flourish over the examined 15 years, evidenced by annual research outputs, number of publications per journal, countries/regions active in TS, as well as institutions and authors producing TS research. Meanwhile, the co-citation analysis not only unveils the intellectual structures that constitute TS, but also maps several relatively clear-cut research sub-areas within TS. Furthermore, a diachronic and comparative analysis of high-frequency keywords reveals that the thematic landscape of TS has undergone profound changes, with some early-dominant topics or concepts gradually losing their initial appeal; while a series of newly developed or borrowed concepts, methods and issues have gained increased popularity. The data confirms the multidisciplinary nature and continuous 'paradigm shifts' of TS. Based on these results, we discuss the achievements that TS has made as well as its drawbacks, before reflecting on the implications of the analysis for the direction of future research. This article aims to examine the Euthymius Chudovski’s editing in the translation of «Epitome» by Constantine Armenopoulos, carried out by Epiphanius Slavinetsky in the second half of the XVII century. The research goal is to identify the directions of editing in this translation and substantiate the authorship of Euthymius Chudovski. The study focuses on the relationship between the Slavic translation of «Epitome» and the Greek original. The editorial revisions of Euthymius are analyzed primarily at the lexical and grammatical levels. The article author delves into the analysis of specific editorial positions, characterizing the language of the Chudov scribes. These positions include the rendering of the Greek substantivized infinitive, the use of demonstrative pronouns as personal pronouns, and the principle of morphemic and literal translation. The research material is based on the final version of the translation, copied by Euthymius (Sin. 129), as well as the possible draft of the translator and editor (Und. 40). Certain editorial positions are compared with materials relevant to the grammars used by the Chudov scribes. The significance of this work lies in the need for a more detailed linguistic investigation of the translations produced by the scribes of the Chudov school, which are valuable monuments of the period of the Nikonian reforms. The novelty of the research lies in introducing into scholarly discourse manuscripts that have not been previously studied by linguists and in defining the role played by Euthymius of the Chudov Monastery in the translation done by his teacher.

The virginity test is a long-standing tradition that has been documented in at least 20 countries around the globe (WHO, 2018). Women and girls are frequently subjected to or forced to undergo this test for various reasons. In the Indonesian context, this gynecological examination conducted under the belief to determine if a woman has had vaginal intercourse has to be experienced by female military candidates. In response, the Indonesian army has set to remove this somewhat controversial policy. Through media, this issue was packed in such a way that reflects the media's stance. Accordingly, this research aims to investigate how media take a stance toward this issue and how the translated version delivers it from the perspective of translation studies and appraisal theory using the qualitative method. Appraisal resources identified the data and compared the original text to the Indonesian versions retrieved from the ABC online news portal (Australian and Indonesia-based). This method is conducted to gather and interpret any attitudinal resources in both original and translated texts. It reveals that the translated version, compared to the more neutral-sounded original one, exploits a more clear-cut attitude towards the issue. Various attitudinal lexis including invasive, gender-based, victim and abusive, are chosen to revoice her stance that this practice is groundless. Through its translation, the author articulates her attitude louder. It proves that different target readers influence how the information is packed and constructed. As a re-situated text, translation barely occurs in an empty space.

This article looks at the life of Henry Holdship Ware (1908-1999), the grandson of the founder of Atlanta University. Captain Henry H. Ware was an aide and interpreter to Major General John Deane, Chief of the U.S. Military Mission to the Soviet Union during World War 2. In this capacity, he was an interpreter with the U.S. Army assigned to the Tripartite Conference in Moscow (1943) and Conferences at Tehran (1943) and Yalta (1945), and a liaison officer and interpreter during Operation Frantic, a joint American-Soviet campaign of shuttle bombing missions in Poltava, Ukraine, in June-September 1944. He was also present at the official surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany at Karlshorst on May 8, 1945, and interpreted toasts at the banquet of celebration after the ceremony. Henry Ware learnt Russian during his five-year stay as a student at Plekhanov Institute in Moscow, where he studied economics and was recruited by the NKVD to report on the American community in Moscow. Back in the USA, he was independently recruited by the Golos-Bentley Soviet espionage network under the codename 'Vick'. In 1975, probably inspired by his study of the Soviet economy, he founded the Useful Services Exchange (USE), a community-based organization in Reston, Virginia, enabling neighbors to help each other through the exchange of services. This article proposes a linguistic-textual analysis model inspired by the construal theory of Ronald W. Langacker, with its application in a study of four Chinese translations of the preface of the Book of Disquiet, posthumous work by Fernando Pessoa with authorship attributed at last to semi-heteronym Bernardo Soares. In the preface, the empirical author invents the encounter of a first-person narrator with the fictional author of the Book in a restaurant in Lisbon. Our analysis aims to understand in what way and at what level those translations retell the story told by the original preface in line with the linguistic-textual manifestations of the construal operations.

Audiovisual Translation (AVT) studies have been among the burgeoning disciplines in translation studies. Although much progress has been made in AVT, there has been little scholarship heretofore to sketch a comprehensive understanding of the domain mapping using bibliometric analysis. Based on a total of 1,424 journal articles collected from the Web of Science Core Collection (SSCI, A&HCI, and ESCI) and Scopus from 2002 to 2022, the publication trends, research progress, research hotspots, and research frontiers were analyzed and visualized using CiteSpace and VOSviewer. The results of this study show that research on AVT has experienced exponential growth in the last two decades and is likely to follow an upward trend in the future. Topics including subtitling, dubbing, audio description, reception, and media accessibility have been frequently explored; and active researchers from Europe and Iran, as well as productive institutes in Europe, the USA, and China, with publications in influential journals, have contributed greatly to AVT studies. The historical development of AVT studies also implies an interdisciplinary trend. These findings provide insights into AVT studies, with a comprehensive overview, which is of great reference significance for researchers in understanding the past achievements of the discipline and carrying out their future research. The Ottoman Muslim and Turkish women's movement provides a unique study field for researchers to follow the traces of women's change and the reconstruction of gender roles during the modernisation process initiated in the Ottoman Empire and continued in the transition period from a centuries-old empire to a nation-state, the Turkish Republic. It also sets a perfect example in terms of demonstrating how feminism can acquire different meanings when translated into different contexts. The article aims to approach the movement from the perspective of translation studies and views the change of women and their gender roles as a translation process. Investigating the translation of women within the relevant socio-cultural and political context based on two concepts of translation studies, rewriting and self-translation, the study suggests that women followed purposeful translation strategies in this process to expand their agency and authority in a patriarchal society over time. Presenting a short historical background of the movement with a discussion on women's agency through two strategies, the act of translation and gradualism, the article assesses the dynamics of the movement through the example of Seniha Sami Moralı, an underrepresented woman and translator in history, who experienced the process firsthand. This paper examines the successful translation and reception of Maria Dermoût's De tienduizend dingen (1955), most particularly in the U.S. and Italy: a quite unique case of a Dutch book which has found its way to world literature. In the late Fifties, this beautifully crafted literary work about the faded world of the Dutch Molucca's prior to WWII, could reckon on sympathy, empathy and interest in different countries. In the U.S., the ongoing decolonization process found a certain support, while Italy did its best to fully erase all traces of its colonial past and only few people with colonial roots tried to keep them alive. The ambivalent, liminar status of this fascinating book, written from a distant elsewhere by a displaced Eurasian author, can explain its appeal to translators Hans Koning and Quirino Maffi – both displaced, too – and international audiences. Cybercrime has increased significantly, recently, as a result of both individual and group criminal practice, and is now a threat to individuals, organisations, and democratic systems worldwide. However, cybercrime raises two main challenges for legal systems: firstly, because cybercriminals operate online, cybercrime spans beyond the boundaries of specific jurisdictions, which constrains the operation of the police and, subsequently, the conviction of the perpetrators; secondly, since cybercriminals can operate from anywhere in the world, law enforcement agencies struggle to identify the origin of the communications, especially when obfuscation strategies are used, e.g. dark web fora. Nevertheless, cybercriminals inherently use language to communicate, so the linguistic analysis of suspect communications is particularly helpful in deterring cybercriminal practice. This article reports the potential of forensic translation in the fight against cybercrime. Although the term 'forensic translation' is typically understood as a synonym of 'legal translation', it is argued that the implications of forensic translation span beyond those of legal translation, to include analyses of language rights, of the right to interpretation and translation in legal procedures (in the EU), or even investigative and intelligence practices. Translation is a pervasive activity that is conducted, not only by professional translators, but also by lay speakers of language, often using machine translation systems. The ease of use of the latter makes it particularly suitable for cross-border criminal (e.g. extortion or fraud) and cybercriminal communications (e.g. cybertrespass, cyberfraud, cyberpiracy, cyberporn or child online porn, cyberviolence or cyberstalking). This article presents the results of the analysis of cybercriminal communications from a forensic translation perspective. It demonstrates that translation is frequently used to spread cybercriminal communications, and that reverse-engineering the translational procedure will assist law enforcement agencies in narrowing down their pool of suspects and, consequently, deter cybercriminal threats. The present study aims to scrutinize the trainee translators' errors in their translations of tourism promotional material, a brochure, from Turkish into English. Thus, this study is designed as a descriptive qualitative research and corroborated with quantitative analysis, presenting a thorough analysis of the translated texts based on the American Translators Association (ATA) translation error taxonomy. The framework of this study employs Corder's taxonomy of phases for error analysis, namely, selection of a text, identification of errors, classification of errors, and explanation of possible reasons for those errors. The data discussed in this paper derive from the translated texts of fiifteen trainee translators i.e., third- and fourthyear T&I students at a private university enrolled in the Cultural Aspects of Translation and Interpretation course. The results revealed a statistical difference between the main error categories. According to the fiindings, trainee translators made most errors in the form of the language, i.e. target language mechanics, followed by errors in meaning and errors in writing quality. In acting as a "cultural mediator" in tourism text translations, trainees have also been found to be not so effective as they are supposed to be. Advances in neural machine translation utilizing pretrained language models (PLMs) have shown promise in improving the translation quality between diverse languages. However, translation from English to languages with complex morphology, such as Arabic, remains challenging. This study investigated the prevailing error patterns of state-of-the-art PLMs when translating from English to Arabic across different text domains. Through empirical analysis using automatic metrics (chrF, BERTScore, COMET) and manual evaluation with the Multidimensional Quality Metrics (MQM) framework, we compared Google Translate and five PLMs (Helsinki, Marefa, Facebook, GPT-3.5-turbo, and GPT-4). Key findings provide valuable insights into current PLM limitations in handling aspects of Arabic grammar and vocabulary while also informing future improvements for advancing English–Arabic machine translation capabilities and accessibility. This article offers a new approach for reading and evaluating translations by repurposing a long-standing model for assessing translations: the equivalence paradigm. Instead of decoupling a target text from a source text, or establishing an equal playing field between them—two common approaches used by recent theorists in translation studies—this article reverses the relationship between the two. The test case for this practice is John Ashbery's translation of Rimbaud's Illuminations. The exercise thus requires reading Rimbaud's work as a translation of Ashbery's "original" text. In this way, the clear hierarchy of values inherent in the equivalence paradigm is highlighted both to expose the model's biases and to bring attention to the inimitable "originality" of a translation. In the end, although Rimbaud may be rightly appreciated as an unparalleled poet, many will find his appeal as a translator—at least as a translator of Ashbery—wanting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The relationship between philosophy, translation, and translation studies has not been explicitly articulated. This article starts from the premise that philosophy is foundational to any academic discipline, and translation studies can critically reflect on itself by engaging its object of study and foundations philosophically. Three distinctions are offered as possible ways of articulating the relationship between translation studies and philosophy: (1) Philosophically informed research in translation studies / Philosophy of translation; (2) Philosophy of translation / Philosophy of translation studies; and (3) Philosophy as an imported doctrine / Disciplinary philosophizing. While philosophy of translation asks what translation is (ontology), philosophy of translation studies examines how we can know about translation (epistemology). The proposed distinctions ascribe philosophical agency to translation studies scholars and presuppose that philosophy can also emerge from within translation studies through disciplinary philosophizing. Previous studies have shown that Systemic Functional Linguistics has a significant role in providing an in-depth analysis for translation purposes (Kim et al., 2021). Studies explored the effect of analyzing certain aspects of register analysis when training translators. Comparisons of the source texts with the target texts were conducted by using SFL as a tool for text analysis. The current paper is set to provide a full review on SFL and translation studies. The aim of this review is twofold: it aims to review how theories and empirical studies of translation and applied linguistics are interrelated; it also focuses on how SFL has been investigated in translation studies. The review shows that research has focused more on comparative analysis to evaluate translations even when used for translator education. The article presents the results of a search study conducted based on ecosystemic and network approaches in translation studies within the framework of the concept of “human — network environment”. The relevance is determined by the importance of considering the socio-communicative aspect in translation activities and viewing the translator as a functionally integrated element of the network environment. Communicative-network interaction of participants in a translation project is described. The research methodology is based on the potential of matrix and network modeling methods for processing and visualizing data of translation communication. The analysis is carried out using two models: a responsibility distribution matrix and an undirected graph compiled using a social network visualizer program as a hypothetical projection of a more complex model, verified in practice. Examples of analyzing project interaction between written and oral translations based on a protocol of pilot interviews with English language translators about their experience working in a translation department at an industrial enterprise in the Chelyabinsk region are used as materials. The comprehensive methodology of matrix-network modeling allows for explicitating the specifics of work in a translation project at an enterprise, identifying control-network nodes that accumulate the main communicative load, and determining strategies to enhance communication efficiency.

The article discusses the cognitive-communicative principles of modern translation studies based on the cognitive paradigm, which focuses on the cognitive activities of translators and the information, knowledge, and meanings contained in texts and discourses. The aim of the research is to develop principles of translation studies from the perspective of this paradigm. The research methodology is based on the author’s concept of translation space, which operates with the concepts of cognition, synergy, and harmony; the concept of “epistemic situation,” which reveals the extralinguistic semantic basis of scientific texts as a triad of ontology, methodology, and axiology; and cognitive studies of language and translation. The methodological approach to the practical analysis of translation implemented in the article is based on the principles of synergy, which reveal the regularities of complex linguo-cognitive systems. The axiological orientation of translation is based on the idea of harmony as a semantic proportionality, which serves as a criterion for translation quality. Fragments of texts from the scientificphilosophical discourse of Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault in Russian and French served as empirical material for analyzing how the principles of translation studies work. As a result of the research, anthropocentric, epistemological, and reflexive-conceptual principles of translation studies are characterized.

The article explores dialogic units with responsive utterances containing brief narrative structures consisting of representing or substituting words, such as we do, it will, they are not, etc. The linguistic material is sourced from the text of Shakespeare’s play ‘Hamlet’ and its translations into Russian by N. Polev, A. Kroneberg in the 19th century, B. Pasternak, M. Lozinsky, A. Radlova in the 20th century, V. Ananyin, I. Peshkov in the 21st century. The lexical-grammatical and stylistic characteristics of concise English structures are discussed, along with the translators’ approaches to their interpretation. It is revealed that in the translation texts, representative sentences are reflected by repeating individual words of the initiating utterance (sledi [follow] — slezhu [I follow]), idiomatic expressions (chego net, togo net [what is not, that is not]), sentence-words (da, net, vernо [yes, no, correct]), combinations like (sovershenno vernо [absolutely correct], tochno tak [just like that]), imperative markers (ne somnevaytes’ [do not doubt]). The authors of Russian translations maintain the function of utterances with representative sentences in Shakespeare’s text: in terms of character interaction — as an informative or phatic speech element ensuring coherence in dialogues, in terms of audience impact — as a tool helping viewers better navigate the stage events.

Abstract Advances in neural machine translation utilizing pretrained language models (PLMs) have shown promise in improving the translation quality between diverse languages. However, translation from English to languages with complex morphology, such as Arabic, remains challenging. This study investigated the prevailing error patterns of state-of-the-art PLMs when translating from English to Arabic across different text domains. Through empirical analysis using automatic metrics (chrF, BERTScore, COMET) and manual evaluation with the Multidimensional Quality Metrics (MQM) framework, we compared Google Translate and five PLMs (Helsinki, Marefa, Facebook, GPT-3.5-turbo, and GPT-4). Key findings provide valuable insights into current PLM limitations in handling aspects of Arabic grammar and vocabulary while also informing future improvements for advancing English–Arabic machine translation capabilities and accessibility.

Ecocritical translation studies aim to discover and interpret the human-nature relationship embodied and represented in translation. Different from studies on translation ecology, they focus on ecology related to nature, rather than using âecologyâ as a metaphor. This article attempts to clarify the ecocritical translation studies by analyzing their meaning, features, current studies and basic paradigms. Ecocriticism enables translation studies to transcend the human realm and delve into the natural world, challenging anthropocentrism. In the face of global eco-crises, it offers a new perspective and direction for translation studies, infusing these studies with a concern for nature, ecological values, and the responsibility to save the endangered earth.

The quality of some Chinese literary translations has raised concerns among some translation scholars. This qualitative study presents an examination of Juliane House’s latest translation quality assessment model in evaluating the quality of ‘Sweltering Summer’, the English translation of ‘Yanre de xiatian’, a short Chinese story. House’s model reveals that the translation quality is dependent on the matching degree of the textual profile and function between the original and translation. The article concludes that despite minor discrepancies along the dimensions of field, tenor, and mode leading to minor disagreements of ideational and interpersonal functional components between the source text and the target text, the original and its overt translation are largely equivalent at the level of language/text, register, as well as genre, and the overall quality of the translation remains adequate by providing mismatch and match examples and interpretations in support of the conclusion. This study confirms the feasibility and reliability of House’s model, offering insights for translation scholars interested in assessing translation quality in the realm of short literary works and providing constructive suggestions for translators of Chinese literature. Future research could explore sufficient syntactic and textual examples using quantitative data and the mismatches between the original and the translated texts.

Contemporary Italian poetry began to spread in the U.S. after World War II, appearing in literary magazines and anthologies along with neorealist films and novels. The reception of this genre requires an analysis of the mechanisms and factors that make books and authors relevant in different markets. An author's success and the visibility of books are not measured only by sales, especially for poetry in translation. Publishers consider the prestige such works can bring to their catalog, even though they often involve a long-term investment and possible economic loss. Italian poetry has been crucial for many professional translators-in-training, representing their first encounter with Italian literature. Poetry translation is a complex challenge that requires negotiation between the translator's creative freedom and attention to form and meaning. William Weaver is an example of a translator who sought an original voice through his approach to Italian literature. Robert Lowell explored the potential of "Imitations" in his work. The reception of Italian poetry in the U.S. has been influenced by important intermediaries such as Renato Poggioli, professor of Comparative Literature at Harvard, and Marguerite Caetani with the magazine "Botteghe Oscure." Italian poets who debuted on the American scene and translators who made their works accessible to the public were identified. Modes of publication and indicators of legitimacy were considered, such as educational publications and integration into U.S. academic courses, but also critical reflections on Italian poetry that have been published in the American press and introductions and apparatuses found in translated works. Poetry is considered a legitimizing genre in the national and international literary scene, and some Italian poets have been consistently translated by English and American writers. Montale is a particular case study, as his works have been repeatedly retranslated by various poets and intellectuals, representing a laboratory of constant renegotiation of poetic form and meaning. The training of oral and written summarization is embedded in Cognitive Apprenticeship Theory (CAT). This study examines how this form of intervention can improve the longterm reading comprehension skills of students at the Intermediate level; under a program to train translators in English/French into Arabic. It assesses the effectiveness of individual learning and cooperative study methods. One group was given personalized learning, another collaborative; both were split further into spoken and written groups. The 120 students in this cohort all came from the translation studies department at Al-Noor University College (all under age 23). During the six sessions, a delayed post-test used summarization and cooperation scales. The results obtained from one-way ANOVA clarify the impact of summarization training, with verbal groups performing better than written and control learning. In the delayed post-test, groups engaged in collaborative learning notably improved. According to survey results, questions about teacher and student feedback offer mainly positive evaluations of summarization strategies and collaborative learning in translation studies. This study stresses the advanced reading skills in translation studies students gained through summarization training or collaborative learning. This study investigates if there are significant differences in the delayed improvement of reading skills among Translation Department students due to different patterns of summarization training, individually and collaboratively. It also investigates whether there is a significant difference in the delayed effects on reading skills between collaborative and individual approaches, as well as summarizing strategies perception among teachers and students working in Translation Departments. A Dutch translation of the Arthur Conan Doyle short story "The Red-Headed League," published in serial form in the Flemish newspaper Het Volk in 1911, displays considerable changes from the original. This introduction presents the frame and contents of this volume devoted to the translation memoir. The translation memoir is formed at the intersection of life writing and translation studies, in which translators interweave reflections on their practice, craft, texts they translate and positionalities they occupy. As such it is a kind of creative-critical research carried out by translators. It offers a unique entry into texts, languages, cultures and the work of translation. The contributions included in the volume explore the way in which the subject position of writing can be displaced and problematised by inserting the translator's voice and subjectivity into a text, as the translator is precisely the player within a textual ecology who is supposed to not occupy a central position, but reside on the margins, invisible or couched in shadows, speaking only through the voice of another. The writings discussed in this volume, and in some cases the writings themselves, are thus a form of translational experimentation insofar as they break some of the rules, or push the limits of translation as precisely that which is not traditionally considered an original, authored writing.
