Using Bourdieusian class analysis, this mixed-methods study examines the nuances in the upward mobility of Filipino nurse migrants in the Republic of Ireland as they move from the Philippines to Ireland. The article illustrates how the transnational connections of nurses create cleavages among them as a micro-class category in the host state and argues how the social class position of the family continues to impact on the class conditions of migrants – especially those from lower income backgrounds. In contrast, the financial independence of higher income families leads to better life chances for nurses allowing them to invest in additional economic capital, pursue personal projects and improve their symbolic capital. This can be described as the social reproduction of inequality on a transnational scale, which has repercussions on the present and future class conditions of migrants. The cultural magazine Kobra (2001−2017) was one of the longest running shows in Swedish public service television history. Kobra defined culture broadly as arts, popular culture and subcultures, both international and Swedish. The study uses three lenses—journalistification, transnationality and cultural/societal criticism—to analyze how Kobra evolved over its long run. It focuses on four globally eventful years 2001, 2005, 2011, and 2016 and shows how the shifting SVT mandate is reflected in the show's title sequences, program structure, visual features, and text. Transnationality becomes established through topic themed episodes connecting various cultural domains in different parts of the world or through country/city-themed episodes. A close reading from three different years reveals that Kobra exercised transnational systemic criticism through the choice of theme and interview subjects, rather than through evaluation of cultural expression, in line with its increasing journalistification and public service mandate. This autoethnographic narrative inquiry explores the lived experiences and identities of a transnational English language teacher (educator). The aim of this research was to gain insight into my own transnationality, in order both to better inform my beliefs and practices as an educator, and to highlight the value of exploring transnationality as an important dimension in language teacher identity (LTI) construction. Drawing on autobiographical writing and art work as data sources, constant comparison and line-by-line analysis were employed to identify themes in the data, which were synthesized with relevant literature to further make sense of and theorize (my) transnational LTIs. Featuring theme-focused experiences from my life, findings are organized in a past-present-future structure, looking back at how my past identities can inform my present identities, and how these past and present identities are informing my future imagined identities. Major insights gained from this research into transnational LTI include: (a) social categorization, whether conferring high or low status, is a form of objectification, closely linked to the concept of (un)desire; (b) viewing emotions as signals of sites of growth can help to free us from emotional overwhelm; and (c) identifying and acknowledging our strengths can emancipate us from unjust power dynamics and empower others to do the same. Implications for language teacher education are discussed.

Fernando Iwasaki Cauti (1961), a Peruvian writer based in Seville since the 1990s, is one of the many authors who left Latin America to live in Europe at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. Iwasaki has created an abundant, heterogeneous and erudite work where he explores identity, humor and eroticism, among others. The stories in El cóndor de Père-Lachaise (2019) are examples of originality at the stylistic and formal level. In this article we will analyze three elements of the work related to transculturation, transnationality and intertextuality.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing inequalities in care between mobile and immobile populations. It has highlighted the precarious situation of many migranticized individuals and their families worldwide, but it has also brought their situation into the public eye, providing opportunities for advances in social science understanding and policy reform. This Special Issue explores the interplay between transnational care arrangements, cross-border movement and mobility, and the production of social inequality in the post-COVID-19 world. The collected articles provide a comprehensive picture from different countries and fields, revealing three interrelated processes that reflect the complex dynamics during the pandemic: (1) the interruption of transnational care arrangements; (2) the reorganization of these arrangements; and (3) coping strategies to adapt to (post)pandemic immobilizations, restrictions, and modified patterns of care. This contribution offers a survey of the field of biblical drama research and of several approaches. It makes a plea for a transnational approach of studying early modern drama, especially biblical drama. Such a transnational approach is a continuation of many of these earlier approaches, makes use of some and breaks with others. The contribution also shows that it is important to include Neo-Latin drama in the study of early modern drama at the cost of losing sight on a crucial constituent part of the development of this drama and this theatre. Neo-Latin drama contributed to the knowledge and reception of the Bible among the elites and among the ordinary people who attended performances of these plays or of one of the many translations and adapations. Based on ethnographical and collaborative research conducted in the South Mexican region of The Lacandon Jungle, my paper explores how Indigenous peasant communities deal with the effects that various forms of mobility have on their social worlds. Combining decolonial work on Indigenous communality and transnational perspectives with a situational analysis approach, my research specifically focuses on collective processes of meaning-making in light of the increasing mobility among these communities' members. By analyzing how the people who stay collectively organize the community's social world, I position myself against approaches that reduce Indigenous movements to cultural policies, since such approaches overlook the relevance of anti-colonial resistance. My research shows that within the 'Indigenous communal governance systems', the departure of individual members plays a formative role for the entire community, shaping the resulting social relations and political practices. To ensure collective access to territory as a means of communal self-determination, a 'transnational continuum of communality' emerges between the communities of origin and their absent members. The article addresses the relationship of Jewish audiences in Mandatory Palestine/Israel to the cultural heritage of the Second Polish Republic, examining the transfer of Polish interwar popular culture to Palestine during the mandate period and to Israel after 1948, as well as the contemporary revival of interest in this cultural phenomenon. The author analyzes various levels and forms of cultural transfer, considering the roles of artistic communities and audiences, individual initiatives and institutional infrastructure, and social and economic factors. The study also comments on the transformations of cultural texts undergoing transfer, which are adapted to meet new audience needs and reshaped by functioning within novel cultural contexts. The theoretical framework is constructed using categories of transfer, transnationality, locality, adaptation, identity, cosmopolitanism, translation, and contact zone. The transfer of Polish popular culture occurs through diverse cultural practices, with translation playing a pivotal role. This transfer takes place in a transgeographic contact zone defined by the relational space between Warsaw and Tel Aviv as centres of modern culture. In contemporary Israel, references to interwar Polish popular culture and its local adaptations serve a subversive and critical function in relation to the state’s identity politics.

During the time of autonomy, the spiritual concerts were an important part of building up Finnish music culture. How does the organ repertoire from the period 1850–1917 differ from the repertoire in current time, and which were the reasons behind this progress? The author examines the research topics through the spiritual ideas of the time. The research material consists of the concert programmes, concert commentaries and other writing in newspapers, which refer to the attitudes and events that took place during the time of autonomy. Besides the education of organ playing at cantor-organist schools, the German conservatory model in Helsingin musiikkiopisto ["Helsinki music school"] made it possible for Finnish organist to get basic music education in Finland. The European academic network of Richard Faltin and Oskar Merikanto helped their organ students to study abroad. The article visualises the academic network and the transnationality of European musicians, which made it possible for the new European influences to spread fast to Finland. Besides the narrow-minded concept of church music, influenced by German idealism and Pietism, the new symphonic organ style at the end of the nineteenth century emancipated the organ from being only a cult instrument to becoming a concert solo instrument.

This article examines transnational social positioning through a family lens. Based on interviews with people who moved to Germany as young adults, we show that socialization and expectations in families coin individual understandings of success as an important baseline for social positioning, while migration challenges these understandings and social position evaluations in complex ways. With a specific focus on evolving processes of social comparison, we look at the role of the family in shaping three forms of transnational social position: (i) transnational status paradox, (ii) attached transnational social positions, and (iii) detached transnational social positions. By demonstrating the various ways in which family relationships affect social positioning in migration contexts, this study contributes to discussions on the links between migration and perceptions of social position, and to our understanding of transnational social structures. Sociological research on cross‐border class‐making often centres on contemporary dynamics of social inequality in the context of migration and mobility. Relying on the cultural–sociological and processual understanding of 'class', the article integrates three bodies of literature to study complexities of global and transnational class‐making to overcome the 'presentist' bias. Building on the accounts of the Annales School, and specifically on Fernand Braudel's famous distinction between courte durée, moyenne durée and longue durée of historic time periods, the article brings together three different bodies of research: (i) transnational and intersectional approaches; (ii) conceptual history of class theory and (iii) theories of racial and multi‐scalar capitalist dynamics to develop a flexible and relational, but historic‐sensitive toolkit for the analysis of global and transnational class‐making. One of the greatest advantages of this multi‐temporal outlook is that it allows to avoid over‐generalizing accounts on the logics of class‐making and to unpick potentially heterogeneous dynamics of class (re)production. Research on fairness in machine learning (ML) has been largely focusing on individual and group fairness. With the adoption of ML-based technologies as assistive technology in complex societal transformations or crisis situations on a global scale these existing definitions fail to account for algorithmic fairness transnationally. We propose to complement existing perspectives on algorithmic fairness with a notion of transnational algorithmic fairness and take first steps towards an analytical framework. We exemplify the relevance of a transnational fairness assessment in a case study on a disaster response system using images from online social media. In the presented case, ML systems are used as a support tool in categorizing and classifying images from social media after a disaster event as an almost instantly available source of information for coordinating disaster response. We present an empirical analysis assessing the transnational fairness of the application’s outputs-based on national socio-demographic development indicators as potentially discriminatory attributes. In doing so, the paper combines interdisciplinary perspectives from data analytics, ML, digital media studies and media sociology in order to address fairness beyond the technical system. The case study investigated reflects an embedded perspective of peoples’ everyday media use and social media platforms as the producers of sociality and processing data-with relevance far beyond the case of algorithmic fairness in disaster scenarios. Especially in light of the concentration of artificial intelligence (AI) development in the Global North and a perceived hegemonic constellation, we argue that transnational fairness offers a perspective on global injustices in relation to AI development and application that has the potential to substantiate discussions by identifying gaps in data and technology. These analyses ultimately will enable researchers and policy makers to derive actionable insights that could alleviate existing problems with fair use of AI technology and mitigate risks associated with future developments. While migration is often portrayed as a gateway to social mobility, migration scholars have highlighted that transnational spaces and intersecting inequalities may shape social mobility in complex ways. However, little is known about the subjective experiences of spatial and social mobility. Therefore, based on a study of subjective social positions among people who have relocated to Germany, I discuss the implications for a research design that enables social scientists to assess social mobility in contexts of international migration and to explore the spatial dimension in shaping social mobility trajectories. Specifically, I will argue for linking empirical findings from narrative interviews with concepts of space, capitals, and social comparison as well as transnational and intersectional theories. As I will show, this way of inquiring into the social-spatial mobility nexus allows for investigating the complex ways in which spaces affect social mobility, and thus provides a promising gateway to better understand social mobility as a process shaped by both time and space. How can we take transnationality as a space of in-betweenness to generate new possibilities, moving beyond geographically bounded spans between countries? This article presents five authors' collective inquiry on transnational positionalities, which we practiced through the relational, transformative, and reflective writing of the self in a community space. We staged the collaborative writing into two processes: the emergent process of thematic writing and the relay writing. Interweaving "I" and "we" voices that cannot be captured through categorical thinking, our collaborative quest resists normative identity politics, proposing writing as a method of collective inquiry for the nuanced understanding of the transnationality that embraces flows, margins, and uncertainties. Whereas written texts are often perceived as silent, stable, and solitary, attuning to the sonic dimensions of literatures means recognizing how sound crosses borders and opens ears to multiplicity and simultaneity. In this essay, I propose resonant reading as a way of listening to the voices underlying a literary narrative and amplifying its themes, then I advocate for why this attunement towards aural literacies is especially important for borderlands narratives. I demonstrate resonant reading through a comparative analysis of Valeria Luiselli's 2019 novel Lost Children Archive and two other novelists she references: Cormac McCarthy and Roberto Bolaño. While McCarthy was credited with writing the "Great American Novel" and Bolaño was celebrated as the greatest Latin American literary voice of his generation, both of these writers shared borderlands narratives where characters move between Latin America and the United States. By citing these writers as intertexts in her own exploration of migrant journeys towards and across the U.S.-Mexico border, Luiselli demonstrates how multiple texts create thematic resonances together, beyond what each text achieves individually. I argue that an attunement towards resonance in literature offers a new way of understanding intertextuality as sharing more complete and inclusive stories of peoples and places. In conclusion, this essay, by synthesizing Transnational American Studies and Literary Sound Studies, sheds new light on how sonic methodologies change how the reception and reputation of literatures are understood across the Americas. Introduction to essay cluster Transnational Pathways of Eurasian Performance Arts.

This article discusses Rossella Ferrari’s book Transnational Chinese Theatres: Inter­cultural Performance Networks in East Asia. This research monograph by a scholar of Chinese theaters focuses on characterizing transnational artist networks in East Asia. Investigating theater collaborations of artists from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, Ferrari proposes a transnational and rhizomatic model for analyzing Sino­phone culture. The book makes use of multiple sources not referenced in previous research, unpublished materials, and interviews. Ferrari explicitly dissociates herself from the orientalization of Eastern theaters; as her main method in researching them, she chooses Asia itself, following the Taiwanese cultural sociologist Chen Kuan-hsing (Asia as method) and listening carefully to the voice of Chinese theaters.

This article addresses border crossings in the 1970s related to sexual commerce, in particular in the small community of Hälle, located near the Sweden–Norway border at Svinesund and European route E6. As the legal situation with regard to pornography differed in Norway and Sweden, Swedish legislation being more liberal, Norwegians travelled to Sweden to both buy and to consume on-site sexually explicit material and entertainment. By choosing this perspective, the article shifts focus away from the sexually explicit material itself, towards the spaces in which it can be found, and reflects upon consumption of such material as a literally transgressive, non-normative sexual behavior. This article enters into the scholarly discourse surrounding transnationality and its legal manifestations, specifically aligning itself with the discussion of transjudicialism within the context of a global legal community. The paper argues that contemporary transjudicialism extends beyond the simplistic dialogue between courts, emerging as a pivotal instrument consolidating Transnational Law. The exposition of this argument is buttressed by an inductive methodological approach, employing techniques of reference, category, operational concepts, and bibliographic research. The paper concludes by illustrating the formation of an already consolidated global legal order, primarily driven by the evolution of transjudicialism, further emphasizing the need for the extension of current legal models.

The article focuses on describing the main areas of Interpol's activities in combating environmental crime. It is indicated that Interpol's activities in combating environmental crime include the following areas: crimes against wildlife, crimes in the field of fisheries, crimes in the field of forestry, pollution and related crimes. It is noted that an extensive structure has been created within the Organization to combat these crimes. In particular, a group responsible for combating environmental crimes was created - the Environmental Security Programme (ENS). The ENS aims to assist member states in effectively enforcing national legislation and international environmental law, as well as to ensure law enforcement cooperation, combine the efforts of various government agencies and encourage coordinated crossborder actions to maintain environmental security. It is noted that the activities of ENS are closely interrelated and supported by the Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Committee (ECEC). The ECEC helps INTERPOL to identify emerging patterns and trends in environmental crime and develop law enforcement responses to address identified threats; it acts as a strategic advisory group of INTERPOL on policy development and project implementation related to the prevention and suppression of environmental crime and law violations. It is emphasised that the ECEC has four working groups on crimes: Fisheries (FCWG), Forestry (FoCWG), Wildlife (WCWG) and Pollution (PCWG). Each group brings together forensic scientists and experts from around the world who work on threat-based activities and provide the Committee and INTERPOL with expert advice on how to respond to various threats. It is noted that INTERPOL also provides a range of other tools and services in the field of combating environmental crime: the I-24/7 system, notices, ecomessages, Regional Investigative and Analytical Case Meetings (RIACMs), Investigative Support Teams (ISTs), operations, National Environmental Security Task Forces (NESTs) etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies on Chinese nationalist discourse in the late Qing era rarely consider the role of settler-colonialism in the development of nationalism, instead assuming that anti-colonialism was the dominant ideological source. This article transcends the traditional binary discourse of the colonised and the coloniser by exploring how settler-colonialism helped to project a borderless China in late Qing utopian fiction. I argue that this body of literature, as exemplified by Lü Sheng's A Madman's Dream, is a useful lens for exploring how Chinese settler-colonialism developed a (trans)national imagination. China, as a non-Western settler-colonist, had a dual identity: its experience of being colonised by the West resulted in its acting as a settler-colonist, while its efforts to promote a 'new China' overseas were intended to create solidarity with others who had suffered from colonisation. This article thus contributes to the growing body of scholarship about Qing expansionism as an instance of colonialism by demonstrating the internal tensions within Chinese discourse on colonialism in that era. I illustrate that Chinese settler-colonialism displayed a unique blend of discourse about expansion in the past, the experience of suffering in the present, and imagining the future. Historiography on area studies has too often adopted national and homeland traditions as an unproblematic framework of analysis, rather than regarding them as nourished by transnational relationships at different levels. Transnational mobility spaces are defined by crossing and inter-crossing movements, rather than by territories and borders, and represent a particularly appropriate approach for rethinking the historical evolution of those area studies linked to stateless nations and sub-state homelands, such as Basque studies. In this article, it is contended that the history of Basque studies gains clarity and understanding when a transnational perspective is adopted and the following three mechanisms that decisively generated the flows of people and ideas between homeland and diasporas are analysed: 1) the deployment of transnational scholarly networks; 2) mobility linked to exile and the intellectual diaspora; and 3) transnational scholarly exchanges and scholarships. This article focuses on the extraordinary literacies of four Haitian and Haitian American Girls enrolled in a middle grades out-of-school literacy program in Miami, Florida. I examine how the girls narrated Black transnational girlhood through autobiographical writings, classroom discussions, and media analyses. I define the girls' intellectual contributions to the classroom as the superpower of dyasporic dreaming. The concept calls on scholars to affirm the global negotiations of Black transnational girls as literacies. Further, I argue that the superpower of dyasporic dreaming manifested through learning dynamics grounded in Haitian empyreal logics of Vodou and the Diasporic Lakou. This article examines sociopolitical discourse in the democratic network society of Taiwan from translingual and transnational perspectives. Ten multimodal memes from two YouTube videos and the associated metapragmatic comments were analyzed. This study combined a discourse-historical approach and translingual analyses of YouTube users' meme-related discursive strategies, which link historical and political rhetoric to recently circulated linguistic ideologies and cultural stereotypes. This study suggests that the discursive processes of meme-making and interpreting on social media can be understood as networked publics' performative acts in participatory entextualization with larger sociohistorical formations. The results may provide insights into the translingual practices in the specific multilingual society of Taiwan and into broader everyday democratic participation in a globalized transnational network.
