The methods used to value tropical forests have the potential to influence how policy makers and others perceive forest lands. A small number of valuation studies achieve real impact. These are generally succinct accounts supporting a specific perception. However, such reports risk being used to justify inappropriate actions. The end users of such results are rarely those who produced them, and misunderstanding of key details is a concern. One defense is to ensure that shortcomings and common pitfalls are better appreciated by the ultimate users. In this article, we aim to reduce such risks by discussing how valuation studies should be assessed and challenged by users. We consider two concise, high-profile valuation papers here, by Peters and colleagues and by Godoy and colleagues. We illustrate a series of questions that should be asked, not only about the two papers, but also about any landscape valuation study. We highlight the many challenges faced in valuing tropical forest lands and in presenting and using the results sensibly, and we offer some suggestions for improvement. Attention to complexities and clarity about uncertainties are required. Forest valuation must be pursued and promoted with caution.

Estimation of hydrological processes is critical to water resource management, water supply planning, ecological protection, and climate change impact assessment. Mountains in Central Asia are the major source of water for rivers and agricultural practices. The disturbance of mountain forests in the region has altered the hydrological processes and accelerated soil erosion, mudflow, landslides, and flooding. We used the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model calibrated and validated with remote sensing data to quantify the mountainous hydrological processes in the Aktash River watershed (ARW) of Uzbekistan, Central Asia. Simulations showed that the daily surface runoff and streamflow closely responded to daily precipitation. Groundwater discharge reached its maximum in winter because of snowmelt. The wet months were from July to December, and the dry months were from January to June. The magnitudes of the seasonal hydrological processes were in the following order: fall > summer > winter > spring for precipitation and surface runoff; summer > spring > fall > winter for evapotranspiration (ET); winter > spring > fall > summer for snowmelt; fall > winter > summer > spring for water yield and streamflow; and winter > fall > spring > summer for groundwater discharge. The Mann–Kendall statistical test revealed a significant increasing trend for the annual precipitation (τ = 0.45, p < 0.01) and surface runoff (τ = 0.41, p < 0.02) over the past 17 years from 2003 to 2019. Compared to rangeland, forested land decreased monthly and annual average surface runoff by 20%, and increased monthly and annual average groundwater recharge by about 5%. Agricultural land had much higher unit-area values (mm/km2/y) of ET, groundwater recharge, and water yield than those of urban, forest, and range lands. Our research findings provide useful information to farmers, foresters, and decision makers for better water resource management in the ARW, Central Asia, and other mountain watersheds with similar conditions. In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) is a non-invasive imaging technique used to visualize the layers of the cornea and conjunctiva in real time. In patients with atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) and vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC), this technology can be useful in diagnosing and monitoring the disease, as well as evaluating the efficacy of treatments. IVCM can reveal subclinical abnormalities in the corneal and conjunctival epithelium such as inflammatory cell infiltrates and tissue damage, which can provide insight into the pathogenesis of AKC. In AKC, IVCM reveals changes around the conjunctival papillae, inflammatory cells around punctate defects in the corneal epithelium, changes in subbasal nerve morphology, and deteriorations in the goblet cells in the meibomian gland are observed. In VKC, alterations can be observed in the diameter, brightness and nucleus/cytoplasm ratio of the superficial epithelial cells in the cornea. The use of IVCM in AKC and VKC can therefore aid in the early detection and management of the disease, as well as contribute to a better understanding of its underlying mechanisms. Studies have extensively examined the cooling effects of forests. Various methods exist for evaluating climate regulation at regional and global levels. Local-scale cooling effects and their valuing methods, however, remain poorly understood. In this study, the temperature difference and energy balance methods were compared to assess the value of cooling services of three forest types at a local scale. Using the window searching strategy, land surface temperature and sensible heat flux differences between forest and open land were compared. The average cooling temperature of broad-leaved forests was found to be 0.229 °C, significantly higher than that of coniferous forests, at 0.205 °C, while mixed coniferous–broad-leaved forests were not significantly different to the other two types. The average sensible heat flux differences in broad-leaved, coniferous, and coniferous–broad-leaved forests were found to be 0.23, 0.079, and 0.11 MJ/m2/day, respectively. According to the correlation analysis, the sensible heat flux was significantly correlated with the cooling degree (R = 0.33, p = 0.05), suggesting consistency between the two approaches. However, the total cooling value calculated with the energy balance method was CNY 0.51 billion, significantly higher than the temperature difference method at CNY 0.11 billion. The main reason for the differences between the two approaches is the uncertainty in cooling volume and cooling time for the temperature difference method and energy balance method, respectively. The impact of vegetation on the microclimate depends on the vegetation type, topography, local climate, and other factors. It is also important to note that cooling services are not required at all times of the day, and energy differences can hardly be calculated based on the hour. However, surface radiation and evapotranspiration generally occur during the daytime, which is also when the surface temperature is high. Therefore, there is a certain coincidence with the time when cooling is needed. The energy balance method presented herein provides a novel alternative approach to assessing the cooling services of local-scale forests, offering advantages over the commonly used temperature difference approach, which is associated with large uncertainty. With their unique karst geomorphology and rich biodiversity, forest ecosystems present huge ecological potential, and their ecological products promise great economic value. In this context, an important way to realize the sustainable development of karst areas is the transformation of such ecological potential into economic advantages. In this paper, Guizhou Province, China, one of the most representative regions with karst geomorphology, is examined in a case study. Using the equivalent factor method, the values of forest ecological products in various states of Guizhou Province were calculated for the years 2010, 2015, and 2020. Furthermore, a two-way fixed-effects model was employed to examine the influence of green finance on the realization of these values in the karst region. The findings of this paper are as follows: (1) The value of forest ecological products presented an increasing trend from 2010 to 2020, and green finance significantly promoted the value realization of forest ecological products. Robust estimates could still be obtained after endogeneity control. (2) The results of heterogeneity testing indicated that in karst regions with slower economic development and poor ecological environment, green finance promoted the value realization of forest ecological products more significantly. (3) The mechanism test showed that by providing financial support for rocky desertification control and forest restoration projects, green finance promoted ecological restoration, governance, and vegetation restoration while mitigating rocky desertification; in this way, green finance drove the development of ecological forestry and industrial upgrading to accelerate the value realization of ecological products, thereby strongly supporting the sustainable development of karst areas. Insulating polymeric layers, like fluorinated polymers, are excellent dielectric materials for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). However, their high hydrophobicity hinders the deposition of crystalline organic semiconductors, and the poor interface formed deteriorates the charge transfer characteristics. To improve the interface between the dielectric and organic semiconductor, the hydrophobicity of the polymer dielectric must be slightly reduced. Herein, we report the surface tuning of fluorinated dielectrics by the incorporation of fluorine-based UV-assisted crosslinkers. Because the crosslinker is also fluorine-based, the dielectric polymer solution can be homogenously mixed and deposited by a facile printing process to produce a highly polymerized film with excellent insulating properties. Characterization results confirm that the dielectric with crosslinkers enables the formation of an organic semiconductor layer with large crystal grains that facilitates charge transfer at the interface. As the characterization results, transfer curves, and bias-stress test results revealed, the high-quality interface enabled the successful fabrication of OFETs with excellent electrical performance and high thermal stability. The printing process was then applied to integrate multiple n-type and p-type OFETs into NOT, NOR, and NAND gates, demonstrating that the surface modulation of organic dielectrics is scalable and effective in fabricating stable and high-performance large-area organic field-effect devices. Urban forests are crucial to alleviate climate change by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. Although recent research has mapped the ecosystem service worldwide, most studies have not obtained accurate results owing to the usage of high-cost and low-resolution data. Hence, herein, carbon storage and carbon uptake per capita are quantified and mapped for all administrative districts of the Seoul Metropolitan City through (1) the analysis of tree cover via on-site tree investigation and aerial imagery and (2) geographic information system (GIS) analysis, targeting the Seoul Metropolitan City of South Korea, which has achieved the highest level of development. Results indicate that the total carbon storage and carbon uptake of Seoul are approximately 1459024 t and 147388 t/yr, respectively; the corresponding per unit area values are approximately 24.03 t/ha and 2.43 t/ha/yr, which are lower than those of other cities. In particular, carbon storage and uptake per capita benefits of the urban areas, except for the urban forest areas, are confirmed to show a maximum difference (~20 times) between the regions. This signifies a significant difference between areas in receiving carbon per capita benefits. Finally, we intend to quantify the tree cover and carbon cycle of urban areas of Seoul and map them in order to recognize areas requiring potential planting spaces. This will aid landscape planners and policy makers in establishing plans and policies for urban trees toward alleviating climate change and reducing the amount of fine dust and CO2 concentrations. Sound absorption properties of polyamide 6 (PA6) nanofibre webs and a widely used sound absorption foam coated with nanofibre webs have been investigated. Initial studies have focused on the electrospinning by using PA6 polymer to obtain uniform and bead-free nanofibres. Thereafter, nanofibres are electrospun on an absorption foam through two spinning durations of 10 h and 20 h. Thicknesses, mass per unit area values, porosities, pore sizes, and Brunauer-Emmet-Teller surface areas of the webs are determined. At characterization stage, sound absorption coefficients of pure nanofibre webs, pure foam, and foams enhanced with nanofibre webs are measured by acoustic impedance tube method. Noise reduction coefficients (NRC) are also calculated. Sound absorption coefficients at 6400 Hz are observed as 0.76 and 0.74 for nanofibre webs electrospun during 10 h and 20 h respectively. The NRC values are found as 0.189, 0.197 and 0.192 for pure foam sample and nanofibre webs electrospun during 10 h and 20 h respectively. Overall results of the study indicate that moderate mid-high frequency sound absorption and noise reduction coefficients are obtained by using the nanofibre web coated foams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Developing countries that intend to implement the United Nations REDD-plus (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation, and the role of forest conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks) framework and obtain economic incentives are required to estimate changes in forest carbon stocks based on the IPCC guidelines. In this study, we developed a method to support REDD-plus implementation by estimating tropical forest aboveground biomass (AGB) by combining airborne LiDAR with very-high-spatial-resolution satellite data. We acquired QuickBird satellite images of Kampong Thom, Cambodia in 2011 and airborne LiDAR measurements in some parts of the same area. After haze reduction and atmospheric correction of the satellite data, we calibrated reflectance values from the mean reflectance of the objects (obtained by segmentation from areas of overlap between dates) to reduce the effects of the observation angle and solar elevation. Then, we performed object-based classification using the satellite data (overall accuracy = 77.0%, versus 92.9% for distinguishing forest from non-forest land). We used a two-step method to estimate AGB and map it in a tropical environment in Cambodia. First, we created a multiple-regression model to estimate AGB from the LiDAR data and plotted field-surveyed AGB values against AGB values predicted by the LiDAR-based model (R2 = 0.90, RMSE = 38.7 Mg/ha), and calculated reflectance values in each band of the satellite data for the analyzed objects. Then, we created a multiple-regression model using AGB predicted by the LiDAR-based model as the dependent variable and the mean and standard deviation of the reflectance values in each band of the satellite data as the explanatory variables (R2 = 0.73, RMSE = 42.8 Mg/ha). We calculated AGB of all objects, divided the results into density classes, and mapped the resulting AGB distribution. Smart elastic bandages have recently gained significant importance in developing soft wearables for healthcare applications. However, developing functional elastic bandages with high liquid management capacity and smart wearable performance is still a challenge. Herein, a stretchable laminated elastic fabric is designed and developed by constructing the cascading fibrous clusters in the thickness direction with elastic layers of Propylene-Based Elastomer (PBE) filament webs and fluffy layers with carded fibrous webs. The elastic layers with an ordered fiber arrangement and fluffy layers with large porosity are alternately layered and tightly fitted, achieving a high elastic recovery rate of 80.3%, a large compression recovery rate of 76.5%, and excellent tensile stability, thereby contributing to the embedment of sensors for monitoring human physiological signals. Moreover, this laminated elastic fabric possesses a large liquid management capacity index of 121.1, a superior softness score of 81, and a contact cool feeling coefficient of around 0.15 J (cm−2 s−1), demonstrating excellent comfort wearability features. This strategy offers a cost-effective and scalable fabrication method with superior softness and comfort, excellent liquid management capacity, and continuous real-time sensing. Rainfall erosion can cause environmental and economic damage by decreasing the storage capacity of water reservoirs because of the detachment of soil particles. The purpose of this study was to develop a one-dimensional physicomathematical model that can help predict the effects of rainfall erosion on the banks of water reservoirs. The model was developed using the Mein–Larson model to describe water infiltration, the kinematic wave approximation to represent overland flow generation, and the steady state sediment continuity equation to estimate sediment transport. The model was validated using rainfall simulator tests and lateritic soil samples with a bimodal soil–water retention curve. The results showed conformity with the experimental data, identifying a threshold in the models for discharge per unit area and sediment yield rate, as well as a linear increase in the models for total runoff and sediment load per unit area. However, the model failed to capture the peak in sediment yield rate owing to raindrop impact during the initial minutes of rainfall. Parametric analysis highlighted the impact of increasing the calibration constant of splash erosion, erodibility coefficient, and critical shear stress on the slope of the sediment load per unit area model. Despite its limitations, the model demonstrates satisfactory predictive capability for sediment load per unit area under high-intensity rainfalls, achieving an R2 greater than 0.92 in five of the six cases examined. Direct seeding is employed to circumvent the labor-intensive process of rice (Oryza sativa) transplantation, but this approach requires varieties with vigorous low-temperature germination (LTG) when sown in cold climates. To investigate the genetic basis of LTG, we identified the quantitative trait locus (QTL) qLTG11 from rice variety Arroz da Terra, which shows rapid seed germination at lower temperatures, using QTL-seq. We delineated the candidate region to a 52-kb interval containing GENERAL REGULATORY FACTOR14h (GF14h) gene, which is expressed during seed germination. The Arroz da Terra GF14h allele encodes functional GF14h, whereas Japanese rice variety Hitomebore harbors a 4-bp deletion in the coding region. Knocking out functional GF14h in a near-isogenic line (NIL) carrying the Arroz da Terra allele decreased LTG, whereas overexpressing functional GF14h in Hitomebore increased LTG, indicating that GF14h is the causal gene behind qLTG11. Analysis of numerous Japanese rice accessions revealed that the functional GF14h allele was lost from popular varieties during modern breeding. We generated a NIL in the Hitomebore background carrying a 172-kb genomic fragment from Arroz da Terra including GF14h. The NIL showed superior LTG compared to Hitomebore, with otherwise comparable agronomic traits. The functional GF14h allele from Arroz da Terra represents a valuable resource for direct seeding in cold regions. Author summary: Rice serves as a fundamental crop sustaining over half of the global population. With the rapid growth of the world's population, it will become increasingly important to improve rice productivity. On the other hand, the aging of rice farmers in Japan has resulted in a constant labor shortage. To address this, direct seeding, in which seeds are sown directly in rice fields without going through the most labor-intensive part of the rice cultivation process, i.e., seedling production and transplanting, has been recommended. However, prevalent elite rice varieties are known to be unsuitable for direct seeding due to their poor seed germination ability under low-temperature conditions. In this study, we show for the first time that GF14h gene from the Portuguese variety Arroz da Terra improves seed germination at low temperatures (LTG). In addition, a novel cross-bred line was generated by introducing the GF14h-containing genomic segment from Arroz da Terra into Hitomebore, a widely cultivated variety in northern Japan. This line is expected to be used as a pre-breeding material to enhance LTG. This study will provide a genetic basis for LTG and contribute to basic and applied research progress. The Chaobai River Basin, which is a crucial ecological barrier and primary water source area within the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region, possesses substantial ecological significance. The gross ecosystem product (GEP) in the Chaobai River Basin is a reflection of ecosystem conditions and quantifies nature's contributions to humanity, which provides a basis for basin ecosystem service management and decision-making. This study investigated the spatiotemporal evolution of GEP in the upper Chaobai River Basin and explored the driving factors influencing GEP spatial differentiation. Ecosystem patterns from 2005 to 2020 were analyzed, and GEP was calculated for 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020. The driving factors influencing GEP spatial differentiation were identified using the optimal parameter-based geographical detector (OPGD) model. The key findings are as follows: (1) From 2005 to 2020, the main ecosystem types were forest, grassland, and agriculture. Urban areas experienced significant changes, and conversions mainly occurred among urban, water, grassland and agricultural ecosystems. (2) Temporally, the GEP in the basin increased from 2005 to 2020, with regulation services dominating. At the county (district) scale, GEP exhibited a north-west-high and south-east-low pattern, showing spatial differences between per-unit-area GEP and county (district) GEP, while the spatial variations in per capita GEP and county (district) GEP were similar. (3) Differences in the spatial distribution of GEP were influenced by regional natural geographical and socioeconomic factors. Among these factors, gross domestic product, population density, and land-use degree density contributed significantly. Interactions among different driving forces noticeably impacted GEP spatial differentiation. These findings underscore the necessity of incorporating factors such as population density and the intensity of land-use development into ecosystem management decision-making processes in the upper reaches of the Chaobai River Basin. We present the first top-down CO fire emissions inventory for Africa based on the direct relation between geostationary satellite-based Fire Radiative Power (FRP) measures and satellite observations of Total Column Carbon Monoxide (TCCO). This work extends significantly the previous Fire Radiative Energy Emissions (FREM) approach that derived Total Particulate Matter (TPM) emission coefficients from FRP measures and Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) observations. The use of satellite-based CO observations to derive CO emission coefficients, addresses key uncertainties in the use of AOD measures to estimate fire-generated CO emissions including; the requirement for a smoke mass extinction coefficient in the AOD to TPM conversion; and the large variation in TPM emission factors - which are used to convert TPM emissions to CO emissions. We use the FREM-derived CO emission coefficients to produce a Pan-African CO fire emission inventory spanning 16 years. Regional CO emissions are in close agreement with the most recent version of GFED(v4.1s), despite the two inventories using completely different satellite datasets and methodologies to derive CO emissions. Dry Matter Consumed (DMC) and DMC per unit area values are generated from our CO emission inventory - the latter using the 20 m resolution Sentinal-2 FireCCISFD burnt area (BA) product for 2019. We carry out an evaluation of our FREM-based CO emissions by using them as input in the WRF-CMAQ chemical transport model and comparing simulated TCCO fields to independent Sentinal-5P TROPOMI TCCO observations. The results of this validation show FREM CO emissions to generally be in good agreement with these independent measures - particularly in the case of individual fire-generated CO plumes where modelled in-plume CO was within 5% of satellite observations with a coefficient of determination of 0.80. Modelled and observed CO, averaged over the full model domain, are within 4% of each other, though localised regions show an overestimation of modelled CO by up to 50%. However, when compared to other evaluations of current state-of-the-art fire emissions inventories, the FREM CO emission inventory derived in this work shows some of the best agreement with independent measures. Updates to the previously published FREM TPM emissions coefficients are also provided in the Appendix of this article, along with a satellite and ground-based validation of this FREM TPM emissions inventory. Combustion processes are the primary source of fine particulate matter in indoor air. Since the 1970s, plants have been extensively studied for their potential to reduce indoor air pollution. Leaves can retain particles on their surfaces, influenced by factors such as wax content and the presence of hairs. This study introduces an innovative experimental approach using metal oxide particles in an office-like environment to evaluate the depolluting effect of plant walls. Two plant walls were installed in a controlled room, housing three plant species: Aglaonema commutatum 'Silver Bay', Dracaena fragrans, and Epipremnum aureum. Metal oxide particles were introduced via a compressed air blower positioned between the two walls. The concentration of these particles was monitored using PM2.5 sensors, and the deposition of iron (Fe) on the leaves was quantified through Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). This novel methodology effectively demonstrated the utility of both real-time sensors and ICP-MS in quantifying airborne particle concentrations and leaf deposition, respectively. The results revealed that Dracaena fragrans had a 44% higher Fe particle retention rate compared to the control (wallpaper). Lately, being physically active has become a priority of daily life. Despite that outdoor sports boost an individual's mental and physical health, it also generates the problem of ultraviolet light exposure. Clothes provide the wearer protection from the sun, but they are also damaged while completing this task. Therefore, the impact of ultraviolet aging on swimwear fabric, which is the most exposed type of garment to the sunrays, was investigated in this study. Changes in breaking force, elongation at break, air permeability, fabric elasticity and stiffness, and dimensional characteristics were examined after 120 and 240 h of artificial weathering, together with scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The influence of seawater treatment was explored as well. The results presented that breaking force, elongation at break, fabric elasticity and stiffness, and air permeability were dramatically influenced by ultraviolet exposure. No chemical destruction was observed in FTIR spectra, while micro-damages were detected in SEM images. Furthermore, it was concluded that the main detrimental parameter was UV radiation, and the effect of seawater treatment was usually found to be minimal or not distinctive. Recreational ecosystem services (RESs) are the subset of ecosystem services (ESs) that contribute to human society through recreation, recreation opportunities, and experiences. Existing RESs mostly focus on a single recreational landscape; alternatively, when mapping RESs, multiple types of landscapes are often drawn together, ignoring the differences in recreational landscape (RL) types and affecting the accuracy of the mapping. At the same time, quantifying the monetary value of RESs has been a challenge due to the lack of market substitutes that can approximate the prices associated with these non-excludable goods. This study used the MaxENT model, then classified and used recreational resource POI data, combined with environmental data on the existence or generation of different types of RL, mapped RES from the perspective of RL supply, and conducted monetization and evaluations of RL. The results show that the models' AUC values are all greater than 0.7, and the distribution of RL supply can be drawn relatively accurately. The Qinghai–Tibet Plateau National Park Group (QTPNPG) has the largest high-quality geomorphic recreational landscape (69,081.02 km2), followed by a high-quality biological recreational landscape (59,348.65 km2) and a high-quality hydrological recreational landscape (33,251.20 km2). The national parks in the eastern part of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau have a larger proportion of high-value areas of the RES. The total monetary value of the RES is CNY 8.323 billion, and the average monetary value of RES per unit area is CNY 20,200/km2. Our study optimizes the method of mapping RESs and provides a new way of quantifying the monetary value of RESs. The results can provide a reference for the recreational development of THE QTPNPG and its contribution to regional sustainable development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The quantitative evaluation and prediction of ecosystem service value (ESV) in the Lhasa River Basin can provide a basis for ecological environment assessment and land-use optimization and adjustment in the future. Previous studies on the ESV in the Lhasa River Basin have focused mainly on static assessment and evolution analysis based on historical data, and have not considered future development trends. Moreover, most of the current driving factors selected in land use and ESV prediction studies are homogeneous, and do not reflect the geographical and cultural characteristics of the study area well. With the Lhasa River Basin as the research focus, 20 driving factors were selected according to the characteristics of the plateau alpine area, and the land-use changes under three developmental orientations, namely, natural evolution, ecological protection, and agricultural development, were predicted for the year 2030 with the FLUS-Markov model. Based on these predictions, the values of ecosystem services were calculated, and their spatiotemporal dynamic characteristics were analyzed. The results show that the model has high accuracy in simulating land-use change in the Lhasa River Basin, with a kappa coefficient of 0.989 and an overall accuracy of 99.33%, indicating a high applicability. The types of land use in the Lhasa River basin are dominated by the existence of grassland, unused land, and forest, with a combined proportion of 94.3%. The change trends of each land-use type in the basin under the three scenarios differ significantly, with grassland, cropland, and building land showing the most significant changes. The area of cropland increased only in the agricultural development scenario; the areas of forest and grassland increased only in the ecological protection scenario; and the expansion of building land was most effectively controlled in the ecological protection scenario. The ESV increased in all three scenarios, and the spatial distribution of the ESV per unit area in the middle and lower reaches was greater than that in the upper reaches. The ESV was the greatest in the ecological protection scenario, with grasslands, forests, and water bodies contributing more to the ESV of the basin. This study provides decision-making references for the effective utilization of land resources, ecological environmental protection planning, and urban construction in the Lhasa River Basin in the future. Endosomal-lysosomal trafficking is accompanied by the acidification of endosomal compartments by the H+-V-ATPase to reach low lysosomal pH. Disruption of the correct pH impairs lysosomal function and the balance of protein synthesis and degradation (proteostasis). Here, we treated mammalian cells with the small dipeptide LLOMe, which is known to permeabilize lysosomal membranes, and find that LLOMe also impacts late endosomes (LEs) by neutralizing their pH without causing membrane permeabilization. We show that LLOMe leads to hyperactivation of Rab7 (herein referring to Rab7a), and disruption of tubulation and mannose-6-phosphate receptor (CIM6PR; also known as IGF2R) recycling on pH-neutralized LEs. pH neutralization (NH4Cl) and expression of Rab7 hyperactive mutants alone can both phenocopy the alterations in tubulation and CI-M6PR trafficking. Mechanistically, pH neutralization increases the assembly of the V1G1 subunit (encoded by ATP6V1G1) of the V-ATPase on endosomal membranes, which stabilizes GTP-bound Rab7 via RILP, a known interactor of Rab7 and V1G1. We propose a novel pathway by which V-ATPase and RILP modulate LE pH and Rab7 activation in concert. This pathway might broadly contribute to pH control during physiologic endosomal maturation or starvation and during pathologic pH neutralization, which occurs via lysosomotropic compounds and in disease states. The ultimate goal of China's tourism industry is to create a flourishing sector that brings happiness. It is of immense theoretical and practical importance to investigate the impact of tourism development (TD) on urban welfare (UW) and uncover its spatial spillover characteristics from a macro perspective. Utilizing panel data from 41 cities in the Yangtze River Delta region from 2000 to 2021, this study applies the spatial panel Durbin model to explore the direct and spillover effects of TD on UW. The results show that TD significantly boosts UW in both local and neighboring areas, with the spillover effects taking a dominant position in the total effects. Examining the sub-dimensions of UW, the local welfare effects of TD primarily stem from economic welfare, whereas the spillover effects are characterized by the "three-wheel drive" of economic, social, and environmental welfare. In investigating the spatiotemporal patterns and spatial attributes of carbon storage across terrestrial ecosystems, there is a significant focus on improving regional carbon sequestration capabilities. Such endeavors are crucial for balancing land development with ecological preservation and promoting sustainable, low-carbon urban growth. This study employs the integrated InVEST-PLUS model to assess and predict changes in ecosystem carbon storage under various land use scenarios within the Chengdu urban cluster, a vital region in Central and Western China, by 2050. The results indicate the following. (1) A linkage between land use dynamics and ecosystem carbon storage changes: over two decades, a 7.5% decrease in arable land was observed alongside a 12.3% increase in urban areas, leading to an 8.2% net reduction in ecosystem carbon storage, equating to a loss of 1.6 million tons of carbon. (2) Carbon storage variations under four scenarios—natural development (NDS), urban development (UDS), farmland protection (FPS), and ecological protection (EPS)—highlight the impact of differing developmental and conservation policies on Chengdu's carbon reserves. Projections until 2050 suggest a further 5% reduction in carbon storage under NDS without intervention, while EPS could potentially decrease carbon storage loss by 3%, emphasizing the importance of strategic land use planning and policy. This research provides a solid theoretical foundation for exploring the relationship between land use and carbon storage dynamics further. In summary, the findings highlight the necessity of incorporating ecological considerations into urban planning strategies. The InVEST-PLUS model not only sheds light on current challenges but also presents a method for forecasting and mitigating urbanization effects on ecosystem services, thus supporting sustainable development goals. In order to achieve global climate goals, it is necessary to estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes from ecosystems. To obtain a comprehensive assessment of CO2, CH4, and N2O natural fluxes for the Russian Federation, we used the "bottom-up" method and updated estimates for forest ecosystems based on State Forest Inventory data and satellite monitoring of forest disturbances. For grassland ecosystems, it was based on the correct distribution of areas between steppe and non-steppe zones. The estimated net uptake of natural ecosystems in Russia was 1.1 ± 1.8 billion tons of CO2-eq./year. The study shows that if only CO2 is taken into account, the net absorption of terrestrial ecosystems in Russia corresponds to more than −2.5 billion tons of CO2 (35% of forests' contribution). However, given the emissions of non-CO2 GHGs, total net absorption in Russia's natural ecosystems is reduced to about −1 billion tons of CO2-eq (with the forests' contribution increasing to 80%). With regard to anthropogenic fluxes, the overall balance of GHGs in Russia corresponds to net emissions of 1 billion tons of CO2-eq/year into the atmosphere. Wearing clothes that absorb or block harmful UV radiation is one of the most effective forms of protection against sun damage and skin cancer. In the current study, sustainable processes which will provide high clothing comfort and a sufficient level of UV protection for fabrics used in production of lightweight sun-protective summer clothing were proposed. In accordance with the scope of the study, structural properties, low-stress mechanical properties, surface characteristics, permeability, and UV-protection properties of three woven fabrics produced with different weft settings and lyocell ratios were determined. The fabric type which had the most desirable results was selected for dyeing experiments. Avocado (Persea americana) seed was used as an ecofriendly source for dyeing and UV-protective functionalization of cotton/lyocell blend fabric. To obtain different hues, the fabrics were mordanted according to two different recipes using magnesium sulphate and ferrous sulphate and dyed with the natural colorant extracted from avocado seeds. Comfort, color, fastness, and UV-protective properties of dyed samples were evaluated by laboratory tests. Results indicated that it is possible to achieve an excellent level of UV protection (UPF 50+) by dyeing cotton/lyocell blend fabrics with avocado seed extract and produce summer clothing with improved comfort and UV-protective properties, without using any toxic materials. Despite the recognition of the built environment as a sector with high potential for reducing embodied emissions, there is a lack of national-level data on embodied carbon emissions attributed to the US commercial building stocks. Hence, there is a need to benchmark the current state of embodied emissions attributed to the commercial built environment and the impact of circular economy (CE) policies for their decarbonization to facilitate well-informed decision-making. This paper fills this knowledge gap through providing policy makers with a framework that estimates the current and future projections of embodied carbon emissions attributable to the US commercial building stocks and highlighting the decarbonization potential of multiple CE policies. To this end, the following multistep research methodology was adopted: (1) collecting and integrating relevant data; (2) conceptualizing and initializing a system dynamics (SD) model; (3) developing subsystems and coflow structures within the SD model using aggregated stock data from the National Energy Modeling System; (4) verifying and testing the developed SD model; and finally (5) suggesting policies and conducting scenario analysis using CE policy precedents. Findings reveal that in the baseline scenario, cumulative emissions are projected to reach 5,605 MtCO2e by 2050. As for the scenario analysis, the unit size reduction policy emerged as the most impactful single policy, achieving a remarkable 38.8% decarbonization. Whereas the comprehensive CE policy that optimizes floorspace demand and the carbon intensity of materials, exhibited a 52% decarbonization potential by midcentury. As such, this study contributes to the body of knowledge by benchmarking emissions projections, providing insights regarding CE decarbonization strategies, their associated primary stakeholders and implementation pathways. Ultimately, by embracing a holistic approach toward CE policies and harnessing accurate and standardized data on building embodied emissions, stakeholders can effectively attain decarbonization goals and promote a sustainable built environment. In box jacking, injecting lubricant around the box is an essential method to reduce excessive friction forces caused by the interaction between the box and soil. This method introduces complexity to factors controlling the friction forces, such as the pipe-soil contact state, earth pressure, and friction coefficient. In particular, during long-distance construction, different lubricant conditions come into play. These intricate scenarios hinder the accurate estimation and control of friction force throughout the entire construction period. This study analyzed the variation patterns of frictional resistance based on monitoring data from two actual cases. The lubricant condition changes during the long-distance jacking process were categorized, the effect of lubricant actions on factors controlling friction force in each segment was discussed, and a new method for calculating friction forces by partitioning the long-distance box jacking was proposed. This approach aims to enhance the prediction accuracy and was compared with the results obtained from existing models. The rationality of the new model was further validated by combining numerical simulation results with field data. The results indicate that the proposed segmented calculation model demonstrates better prediction accuracy when facing variations in actual construction conditions. Nowadays, as consumer expectations have increased worldwide, the importance of polymer materials performance has been raised to a new level. Efforts are required to produce a high-quality product that maintains its quality despite aging factors in certain geographical locations. In the experimental part of this study, polyester materials produced from conventional and recycled yarns, further intended for the production of sportswear, were exposed to natural weathering. Before and after the exposure, the following material properties were investigated: material surface appearance, material thickness, mass per unit area, horizontal and vertical density, surface roughness, tensile properties (force at break, elongation at break), water vapor permeability, liquid dispersion and drying of the material. The results indicate that the surface mass and thickness of all exposed polyester materials decreased after aging due to material shrinkage. The results indicated that prolonged aging negatively affected the values of elongation and force at break. The recycled material exhibited the highest overall decreases in elongation and force at break, but lower surface roughness. In addition, recycled material exhibited a shorter drying time than that of conventional material, both before and after aging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agricultural emissions can be significantly reduced with smart farming, which includes moving away from large conventional tractors to fleets of compact wheeled electric robots. This paper presents a novel simulation modeling approach for an ATV-sized wheeled electric agricultural robot pulling an implement on deformable terrain. The 2D model features a semiempirical tire–soil interaction model as well as a powertrain model. Rear-wheel drive (RWD), front-wheel drive (FWD), and all-wheel drive (AWD) versions were developed. Simulations were carried out on two different soils to examine the energy consumption and tractive performance of the powertrain options. The results showed that energy consumption varies the least with AWD. However, RWD could provide lower energy consumption than AWD with light workloads due to lower curb weight. However, with the heaviest workload, AWD had 7.5% lower energy consumption than RWD. FWD was also found to be capable of lower energy consumption than AWD on light workloads, but it was unsuited for heavy workloads due to traction limitations. Overall, the results demonstrated the importance of taking the terrain characteristics and workload into account when designing electric agricultural robots. A series of empirical studies involving typhoon rainstorm and flood risk scenario analysis were carried out on a medium spatial scale, covering Pingyang County. Considering a rainstorm/water-logging conversion process, active flooding submergence and per unit area values (million yuan/km), two typical risk scenarios (50- and 100-year frequency) were simulated and analyzed. The study revealed that high-risk areas distributed across the towns of Aojiang, Qiancang and Xiaojiang, with a maximum submerged depth of 4.61 m for a 100-year flood hazard. In the case of a disaster loss rate >65 %, the potential maximum loss could be more than 10 million yuan/km. For medium-scale disaster risk, more attention must be paid to catastrophic events, which have a low probability of occurrence but would induce great losses. An amended risk formula could determine the degree of priority for responses to hazards of equal risk value better. In Pingyang County, the 50-year flood risk for Kunyang, Aojiang, Qiancang and Xiaojiang is greater than that of 100-year events for the next 50 years. However, these areas should give priority to their responses to 100-year disaster events during the next 100 years. Simulating the dynamic response of structures to shock involves numerical models that can require significant effort and computational resources to create and solve. This can make accurate naval platform vulnerability analyses involving a large number of simulations impractical and motivates the development of efficient surrogate models for shock and blast effects. This paper presents a novel approach to predicting the response of a floating structure to underwater shock based on machine learning (ML). Velocity time-series for a rigid floating plate subjected to underwater shock and cavitation effects are calculated for a range of charge mass, standoff distance and plate mass per unit area values using a coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian (CEL) numerical model. The computed motions are used to train a recurrent neural network (RNN) to predict the plate response including the effect of reloading due to the cavitation closure pulse. The RNN predicts plate responses from a test set of CEL model instances with a mean value of mean-squared errors between the ML and CEL model velocities, normalized with respect to the velocity ranges, of 1.5 × 10-4. • A RNN was used to predict the motion of a plate subjected to an UNDEX shock wave. • The RNN was trained using a results database of a one-dimensional CFD FSI problem. • A hyperparameter study was performed to select the model architecture. • RNNs show promise as surrogate models in vulnerability analyses for naval platforms. Reconstructing the magnitude and recurrence time of tsunamis, one of the most destructive and unpredictable natural hazards impacting coastal communities, is essential. While major tsunamis are the most studied due to their disastrous impact, small/medium tsunamis (SMTs) are much more frequent and can still significantly impact the coast. Therefore, SMTs potentially provide an extensive archive of information preserved in the geological record. Analyzing the deposits of small/medium paleo‐tsunamis (SMPTs) opens a window into when their direct observation was unavailable. However, deposits of SMPTs are often degraded, traditional sediment deposition inversion models might fail. Recent research has shown that Deep Neural Networks (DNN) can effectively reconstruct the flow conditions of major tsunamis from their deposits. We evaluate the effectiveness of this approach in reconstructing the characteristics of a recent medium size tsunami (2006 Java) and of a medium paleo‐tsunami (1929 Grand Banks). We successfully reconstruct the flow characteristics of the 2006 Java event and show that an inversion of comparable quality is possible for the 1929 Grand Banks tsunami, despite greater uncertainties due to the deposit degradation. Our research shows that Machine Learning has the potential to unseal the meaning of data of thousands SMPTs. Plain Language Summary: While large tsunamis are more destructive than small/medium ones, the latter are more frequent and represent a greater sample for scientists investigating tsunamis. While machine learning was previously applied to invert the well constrained deposits of giant tsunamis, we test here for the first time that approach to characterize older tsunamis for which deposits are degraded and direct observation limited or non‐existing. We successfully extract the properties of the 1929 Grand Banks tsunami (Newfoundland) and compare the quality of the results with the recent and well known 2006 Java tsunami. Fire spread scenarios associated with concealed cavity spaces have been relatively less discussed. The variation in studies with respect to geometry, influential parameters, and protection strategies has been an obstacle to deriving more generalized solutions in terms of cavity fire in buildings. A systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA method to identify the conclusive fire behaviour, safety risks, and protection strategies to enable future researchers to address cavity fire scenarios effectively, avoiding catastrophic disasters. This study identified that relative to open-fire scenarios, cavity fires could result in up to 10 times higher flame spread, up to 14 times higher heat exposure, and temperature conditions 13 times higher. Increased toxicity and smoke velocity are also found with cavity fires. Fire protection strategies and their efficiency were identified for a range of cavity geometries. Altogether, cavity spaces, especially narrow ones, cannot be neglected during fire safety, and proper risk identification is required to ensure the safety of the buildings and the occupants in a fire scenario. Consumer interest in healthy foodstuffs and vegetables has continuously been increasing. In this sense, quality has become a prominent issue in the production, consumption and marketing of vegetables. Seeds and planting processes significantly affect the quality of vegetables. Black carrot production is an important source of income for local farmers of Ereğli and Karapınar Districts of Konya province. Bare seeds of Ereğli local population are commonly used in black carrot production. Farmers produce their own seeds. These seeds undergo only one sieving and are not calibrated. In this study, uncalibrated bare, calibrated and coated seeds were planted and germination parameters were investigated. Experiments were conducted in Kuzukuyu village of Ereğli District, at three different planting distances (2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 cm) in randomized blocks design (3x3) with 3 replications. Planting was done in three rows on a ridge (with 7.5 cm row spacing) at a forward speed of 0.64 m s-1. Mean germination time was calculated as 19.90 days for uncalibrated bare seeds, 20.14 days for calibrated bare seeds and 20.79 days for coated seeds; germination rate index values were respectively calculated as 0.431, 0.761 and 0.656 [seeds (m days)-1]; field emergence rates were respectively calculated as 37.13%, 60.97% and 55.19%; number of plants per unit area were respectively determined as 42.35, 69.14 and 59.61 plants m-2. It was concluded based on present findings that calibrated bare and coated seeds should be used in planting process of black carrot seeds of Ereğli local population. The ecological environment in the mountainous areas of southern Xinjiang is very sensitive and fragile, and identifying the ecological asset retention within the mountainous areas is a top priority at the current stage in the context of comprehensive environmental management in arid zones. This study examines the conversion and ecosystem service values between different land types within the mountainous areas based on a time series of land-use data from 1990 to 2020, and the results show that: (1) The value of ecosystem services on the northern slopes of the Kunlun Mountains shows an overall increasing trend. It increased from CNY 308.645 billion in 1990 to CNY 326.550 billion in 2020. Among them, the value of ecosystem services increased significantly between 2000 and 2010, with an increase of CNY 39.857 billion. Regulatory services accounted for more than 66% of the value of each ecosystem service. (2) Land use on the northern slopes of the Kunlun Mountains has changed significantly since 1990. The areas of cropland, forest land, grassland, watershed, and construction land have all shown an upward trend, with the greatest increase in construction land. The area of unutilized land, on the other hand, has slightly decreased. (3) The value of ecosystem services within the northern slopes of the Kunlun Mountains was spatially high in the south, low in the north, and higher in the west than in the east. The study also found a significant positive spatial correlation between ecosystem service values. In the spatial distribution, the increasing areas were mainly distributed in the southeast, and the decreasing areas were in the north. Changes in land types are expected to include an increase in the area of grassland and woodland, a decrease in unutilized land and cropland, and an overall improvement in the ecological environment of the northern slopes of the Kunlun Mountains in the next decade. Specially developed protective textiles are the greatest armor for people who are exposed to high heat or struggle against flames in their working environment. When the protective clothing worn is constantly exposed to these conditions, changes in their performance can be observed over time. Therefore, in this article, the effects of wetting on breaking, tearing, and seam strength are comparatively examined. A total of five fabrics used in the study were chosen from among the inherently heat-protective blends that are widely used commercially. Extensive research was conducted by combining different techniques such as differential scanning calorimeter and thermogravimetric analysis to characterize their thermal behavior. People working in high temperatures or firefighting often exhibit intense physical activity while performing their jobs, and the comfort of the protective clothing worn becomes even more important due to the adverse conditions of the environment they are in. For this reason, as a part of the study, parameters affecting thermo-physiological comfort such as air permeability, water vapor permeability, and thermal resistance were discussed for heat-protective fabrics selected within the scope of the work. Also, these comfort parameters are examined in terms of variables such as fabric weight, fabric structure, and fiber blend ratio. Based on the results of the study, it appears that the fabrics used are suitable for workwear at temperatures up to about 300 degrees. It is recommended that woven fabrics be chosen when strength is the primary concern, while knitted fabrics are ideal when comfort is the priority. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Timber has long been extensively employed within the construction industry as a famous, environmentally friendly, and low-carbon material. Considering that construction constitutes one of the most significant contributors to carbon emissions throughout the entire life-cycle of a building, there is an urgent desire to incorporate timber into this domain. Nevertheless, the use of timber faces inherent challenges stemming from its anisotropic nature, a result of the natural growth of timber fibers, which makes it challenging for it to function as a primary load-bearing material in coping with the various complex stresses inherent in architectural applications. Numerous designers have attempted to address this limitation through over-sized members and reinforcement at joints; however, none have satisfactorily resolved this issue in an economical manner. In this article, we introduce the Strut-and-Tie models (STM) from Graphic Statics (GS) and a topological optimization algorithm. This algorithm has the capability to generate a 'load-minimizing path' STM based on external load support conditions and the maximum structural path span. Regardless of the complexity of the initial external loads, each load transfer path in the optimized STM bears loads in only one direction, representing an optimal solution with minimal internal loads that align seamlessly with the characteristics of timber. Consequently, we endeavor to adopt this optimization algorithm to propose a structural design methodology, with the aspiration of designing structural systems that harness the unique attributes of timber perfectly and applying them to various architectural scenarios. Ultimately, we conclude that structural systems designed based on optimized STM are adaptable to diverse architectural contexts, and when applied to small-scale buildings, this method can save approximately 20% of material consumption compared to conventional timber frame structures, while in the case of mid-rise to high-rise buildings, it can lead to a material savings of approximately 5%. To achieve the goal of carbon peaking, it is crucial to reduce both carbon emissions and energy consumption during the operational stage of residential buildings. This paper proposed a method for assessing carbon emissions and energy consumption for an energy system utilized in a rural residence. First, an equivalent thermal resistance-capacitance model for a rural residence was established. The parameters of thermal resistance and capacitance were optimized based on the data collected from an operating air source heat pump heating system. On this basis, the energy consumption was derived, and it was compared with real consumption. Then, a method of estimating house energy consumption index per unit area under specified weather conditions was proposed. Finally, the carbon emissions of three heating types—heating driven by air source heat pump, gas boiler, and coal boiler—were compared. Results showed that the derived energy consumption index per unit area was 46.77 W/m2. The carbon emissions of the air source heat pump were 1406.1 kgCO2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quantitative ecosystem services valuation (ESV) is the key to effective environmental protection and ecosystem restoration. Studies have focused on terrestrial ecosystems and are mainly based on static analyses, excluding marine ecosystem service values and their variability. In this study, we comprehensively evaluated terrestrial and offshore ecosystem service values in Jiangsu Province in 2010 and 2018 using a table of unit area value equivalence factors and a vertically generalized production model (VGPM) to estimate marine primary productivity. The results showed that the terrestrial ESV in Jiangsu Province was 322.740 and 477.798 billion yuan in 2010 and 2018, respectively. The ESV of hydrological regulation in water areas was the highest, whereas that of unutilized land was the lowest. The ESV in different prefectural-level cities exhibited significant spatial heterogeneity and were highly correlated with the proportion, protection, and rational utilization of urban water areas. The offshore ESV in Jiangsu Province was 426.011 and 460.438 billion yuan in 2010 and 2018, respectively; the farther from land, the lower the ecosystem service value. The value of ecological regulation services is the dominant factor in the comprehensive services of terrestrial and offshore ecosystems in Jiangsu Province (accounting for 80% of ESV). From 2010 to 2018, the overall terrestrial and offshore ESV in Jiangsu Province rose by 188.901 billion yuan, increasing by 25.28% from 2010. In future, boundaries of development in production activities should be controlled, the protection and restoration of the ecological environment promoted, and regulatory functions and cultural services of ecosystems rationally exploited. The Three-North Shelterbelt Project is the largest ecological engineering initiative in China to date, distinguished by its immense scale, extended construction period, and widespread benefits for the population. The gross ecosystem product (GEP) serves as a crucial indicator for assessing ecological benefits. This study focuses on the Three Northern Protection Forest Project Area, utilizing GEP calculations for the years 2000 to 2020. This study evaluates variations in the production values of different ecosystem services to reflect the ecological conservation benefits of the restoration project. Additionally, it analyzes the spatiotemporal evolution and trends of the GEP calculations, offering data references and decision support for the enduring efficacy of ecological restoration projects. The findings are as follows. (i) Between 2000 and 2020, the GEP of the Three-North region exhibited significant growth with continuous enhancement of various ecosystem service functions; the most substantial rate of change was observed in the water conservation function, followed by carbon sequestration and oxygen release, soil retention, windbreak and sand fixation, flood regulation, and environmental purification functions. (ii) The per-unit area value of different ecosystem types generally increased; the forest ecosystem displayed the largest growth rate at 61.18%, followed by shrubland ecosystems at 49.84%. (iii) The spatial distribution of ecosystem service in the Three-North region displayed a clustering trend alongside notable spatial heterogeneity. High-high clustering zones were identified in areas such as the Tianshan Mountains, Altai Mountains, Qilian Mountains, and Greater and Lesser Khingan Mountains. Conversely, low-low clustering areas were scattered, forming patchy distributions in regions like the Tarim Basin, northern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and the Hexi Corridor. This study, by analyzing the gross ecosystem product of the Three-North Shelterbelt Project region, unveils the spatial distribution characteristics, trends, and variations in ecosystem service values over the past two decades. It provides data support and decision guidance for the long-term efficacy of future ecological conservation and restoration projects. This study incorporates the GEP accounting method into the assessment of the effectiveness of major conservation projects. The current paper first clarifies commonalities and disparities between a 2018 report by the World Bank Group (WBG), the Inclusive Wealth Report (IWR), and Arrow et al.’s 2012 paper. It is worth comparing the measures of wealth components and reported values of the two reports and Arrow et al. 2012, since the WBG 2018 report foregoes using the present value of future consumption and employs different measures of human capital wealth than the IWR 2018 report, and as a result, the two authorities reported different country-level wealth. We clarified what methodologies, parameters, equations, and datasets were used in the reports, and on this basis determined a respective calculation method for each wealth component, or chose one of the multiple possible measures devised by us on the basis of the reports and public databases for the years 2000, 2010, 2014, and 2020. We determined and chose methods on the basis of higher coefficients of determination, or their agreement with reported values, the inclusion of related variables, and their simplicity. The chosen methods were calibrated by comparing their measured values with the values in the reports. After washing cycles, textiles having minimum deformation, maximum dimensional stability and the same performance of an unused product are major expectations of customers. This study examined the effects of washing cycles on the cyclic deformation of elastane knitted fabrics in detail. 12 knitted fabrics with two different linear densities of viscose yarn and three different polyamide/elastane gimped yarn of two different tightness levels (normal and tight) were used in the experiments. M&S P15A test method were used to evaluate the cyclic deformation of unwashed and washed fabrics (0, 5, 15 and 25 cycles) for four different recovery time periods (0 min, 2 min, 30 min and 24 h). Dimensional change, tightness factor and mass per unit area values were also examined in order to investigate the residual deformation of the fabrics after each washing stages. Consequently, it is determined that the fabrics having 21 tex viscose ground yarn and 78dtex20f elastane gimped yarn with higher setting show less residual extension (%). 5 and 15 washing cycles and a 30 min. recovery time are found significant for all repeated washings. The problem of the propagation of a plane light wave in a turbulent medium is studied on the basis of the ideas of statistical topography. A cluster (caustic) structure of the intensity of the wave field in a plane perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave is analyzed both in the region of weak intensity fluctuations and in the region of saturated fluctuations. The specific (per unit area) values of the total area of the regions where the intensity is greater than a fixed level, the fraction of the power confined in these regions, and the total perimeter and average number of such regions are estimated. It is shown that estimates of this kind can be made on the basis of a knowledge of the joint one-point probability distribution of the intensity and transverse gradient of the wave field. Four autotrophic compartments were recognised in Lake Kitiesh, King George Island (Southern Shetland) at the beginning of the summer in 1987: snow microalgae, ice bubble communities, phytoplankton in the water column and benthic communities of moss with epiphytes. Chlorophyll a concentration and pigment absorption spectra were obtained in these four compartments before and/or after the thawing of the ice cover. During the ice free period, carbon fixation and biomass was measured in the phytoplankton and in the benthic moss Campyliadelphus polygamus. From these measurements we conclude that the benthic moss is the most significant autotrophic component in this lake in terms of biomass, chlorophyll a content and primary productivity. The integral assimilation number (The ratio of carbon fixation per unit area to biomass per unit area) values were similar for both phytoplankton and the moss, ranging from 3.6 to 5.4 mg C (mg Chl a)hin phytoplankton and from 4.0 to 6.4 mgC (mg Chl a)h in the benthic moss. This approach allows comparisons of carbon fixation efficiency of the chlorophyll a under a unit area between compartments in their different light environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cone calorimeter is widely used to study fire behaviour of materials employing small size samples. This equipment allows obtaining parameters such as time to ignition (TTI), heat of combustion, mass loss rate (MLR), or heat release rate (HRR) under different heat fluxes. Some studies have considered a linear fitting between MLR and HRR peaks and the incident heat flux. In accordance with this hypothesis, the computer model Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) has included a simple model to extrapolate burning rate data collected from a cone calorimeter test to the heat feedback occurring during a simulation. Nevertheless, deviation in the prediction of the HRR peaks at 75 kW m−2 of approximately 39.3% and of 37.1% for the first and second peak, respectively, were found. Therefore, this work presents a correlation between the incident heat flux and the global HRR per unit area curve, testing up to five different cables and several heat fluxes. To do so, some modifications of the FDS correlation are performed to consider the effect of the flame heat flux in the decomposition of the cables. Once experimental data are acquired, a computational analysis is carried out using FDS to achieve the flame heat flux in the samples. Additionally, this flame heat flux has also been obtained from the literature. As a conclusion, the addition of the flame heat flux to the cone calorimeter incident heat flux provides better predictions than the linear fitting methodology defined in the FDS Guide. Furthermore, this correction is checked with: (1) the example included in FDS guide, decreasing the HRR peaks errors from around 38% to around 25%; and (2) to seven different cables from the literature, decreasing the HRR peaks relative errors, as average, from 14.2 to 9.5% approximately. Horizontal eco-compensation lacks effective solutions for implementing comprehensive multifactor compensation and determining the compensation standard. To meet those needs, a method named entropy flat surface was proposed and put into practice. However, some scientific problems were found. More specifically, the measurement method of the ecological value was controversial, and the value diffusion model did not reflect the change in the value gradient caused by spatial distance, while the value diffusion had an unclear scope. Therefore, this work optimized and studied the entropy curved-surface method in the case of E'zhou City. The main goal was to build a value-surface model of ecological regulating services based on maximum entropy production. As far as a tangible normal distribution surface is concerned, the model was more consistent with the ecosystem's energy flow characteristics. The external output of value could be precisely expressed by the dynamic and stable expansion state of the surface model. Therefore, the eco-compensation relations and results were clear. Theoretically, the E'Cheng and Huarong Districts should pay a total of 114 million CNY to the Liangzi Lake District. Our work provided a new perspective, in terms of finding a rule of the ecological regulating service values of the macro morphological structure, simulating the transmission and diffusion of multiple values in interregional areas, solving the calculation problem of the horizontal ecological comprehensive compensation standard, and clarifying the relations of compensation.
