The question of how to promote co-creation and collaboration among universities and companies in research and developing operations lies in the background of this study. The focus of this exploratory case study is on knowledge-creating patterns in an online dissemination platform. The research question was expressed as follows: How to develop and maintain a context supporting collaboration and creative common activities by academic online publishing. Online publishing environments are in continuous turbulence. Thus, we have to develop platforms for the dissemination of knowledge systematically. This means, for instance, evidence-based analyses, assessing, and brainstorming. In this case study, we describe one development process by focusing on an online journal and the multiple future scenarios (possibilities) for the journal. In addition, some visions and thoughts about the role of OA journals and possibilities in implementing and publishing the activities and performances of higher education institutions are presented. - Abstract
One of the core elements of universities applied sciences (UAS) is its connection with professional fields. Lecturers establish relationships with private organizations and guide students in internships, projects, assignments and towards graduation. In this role, lecturers are confronted with developments in their field of expertise, thereby deploying their networks of relationships through their social capital. From these relationships, a certain reciprocity is created, resulting in possibilities for mutual support. We interviewed UAS lecturers via email about these relationships and the importance they attach to them. The theory of social capital is used to analyse the interactions between lecturers and companies or organizations in the professional field. Above all, these lecturers expressed interest in students' learning processes and used social capital to achieve this aim, while indirectly recognizing its added value for the development of knowledge. Recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) have the potential to improve textile recycling processes and make them more efficient, accurate, and cost-effective. AI can enable automatic differentiation between textile and non-textile materials, allowing for quicker separation and turning clothing waste into reusable resources. The textile processing industry is in need of solutions to address challenges such as labor shortages, sustainability, and resource scarcity. AI technology has already been used in sorting textile waste, with companies like CETIA and Valvan implementing AI-assisted systems for recycling textiles. AI also has the potential to create new and more sustainable textile solutions tailored to customer needs. However, the adoption of AI in the industry also presents transformational challenges that need to be addressed. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract This article aims to explore the moral ideas and experiences that students at Dutch universities of applied sciences (UAS) have of being a professional with an ‘ethical compass.’ Semi-structured interviews were held with 36 fourth-year Bachelor students divided over four institutions and three different programmes: Initial Teacher Education, Business Services and Information and Communication Technology. Findings show that students say they strive to be(come) moral professionals, but that they have difficulties recognising and articulating the moral aspects of their professional roles. They seem to lack a moral vocabulary and the moral knowledge to verbalise their aspirations and to provide arguments to explicate or legitimise their moral behaviour. While most students were critical of the support they received from their universities, they indicated that various other role models and (work) experiences did have a strong and positive influence on their moral development. In this article, we reflect on the findings in relation to international empirical research on students’ moral development and highlight the characteristics of UAS students.

Technology assessment (TA) has become an essential tool for dealing with wicked problems. TA institutions cover many areas of the research landscape; however, the question arises to what extent TA is incorporated by universities of applied sciences. These are supposed to act as local drivers of innovation in addition to providing education. This article examines the dissemination of TA approaches at technically oriented state universities of applied sciences in German-speaking countries. Using a systematic content analysis of online information, it provides an overview of the different manifestations. The aim is to review the current state of TA embedding and to identify needs for and potential opportunities through a thorough implementation of TA instruments in education and research.

The contribution at hand sheds light on dramatically mounting tensions that academic tourism education in Germany is facing within the context of applied science universities. Drawing on the concept of organizational hybridity, we distil two dilemmas resulting from respectively incongruent expectation sets. Firstly, a spatial hybridity dilemma results from opposing missions of regional development and embeddedness versus internationalization prescriptions and efforts. Secondly, there is an ideational hybridity dilemma resulting from imperatives to serve employment markets versus academic purposes of serving social and scientific ideals. Based on a tourism program case from Northern Germany we highlight how a mélange of diverse, partly obscure and increasingly conflicting missions as well as largely inflated and for the most part incongruent stakeholder expectations threaten to tear the institution apart and to lead tourism education onto pathways where it could lose its bearings. We summarize our three major concerns of academics drifting off the course of integrity out of desperation resulting from overwhelming pressures, impoverished learning experience for our student constituencies and impoverishment of research in an era where we need meaningful research more than ever in tourism and beyond. We thus contribute to the debate about the future of tourism education in academia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The structural changes in the pharmaceutical industry have implications on the qualification profile of university graduates. In this paper, the authors share their experiences with and insights into this topic both from the perspective of a university of applied sciences and the industry. They question the current emphasis on competencies and their implementation in university teaching. They believe that module descriptions and learning objectives fall short with respect to the necessary expert knowledge required in industry. They describe the educational philosophy of Carl Remigius Fresenius (1818–1897) with its focus both on knowledge acquisition and application as a counterexample. With the practical case of the M.Sc. Executive Initiative, both the necessity as well as the implementation of practice‐oriented university teaching in the context of the pharmaceutical industry 4.0 is illustrated. The expression that professionals should be led by their moral or ethical compass is increasingly used by academics, policy makers, professionals, and educational institutes. Dutch universities of applied sciences (UAS), for example, explicitly aim to educate their students to become professionals equipped with a moral compass. This moral or ethical compass is a metaphor of which people intuitively grasp its meaning, but our literature review also shows that various interpretations are possible. We found three clusters of proposed ethical compasses expressing its a) content, b) form, or c) use, which we present in this article. Thereafter, we evaluate which compass can meaningfully assist (young) professionals and, therefore, should be part of the aims and content of education provided by UAS. Based on this evaluation, we describe the possibilities and boundaries of UAS' contribution to the development of their students' ethical compass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study gender differences in the selection of traditional universities versus universities of applied sciences in Germany. Do women, due to life and job goals, less often enrol than men in traditional universities and more often enrol at the more practice- and profession-oriented universities of applied sciences? Or are women overrepresented at traditional universities due to prior educational choices and outcomes such as higher school grades and more frequent choice of non-technical fields of study? Our analyses on a national sample of 1st-year students report a 14-percentage point higher likelihood of women than men to enter traditional universities. This gender gap can almost entirely be attributed to educational factors, specifically women's less frequent choice of engineering majors, and hardly by job goal preferences. That, net of these factors, no gender difference exists indicates that women in Germany do not aim lower or higher than men as to the institution choice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A lot of what we read today in the media about coronavirus waves, school closings, and soon available vaccines reminds of the influenza pandemic 1918-1920. An essential difference is the electronic infrastructure that allows us to supply users with online library services. This paper illustrates how the library of the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland managed to compensate the sudden decrease of physical borrowing with already available digital tools (Alma-Summon, Microsoft Teams), and new ones like LibAnswers. Finally, it will be shown how by simple means (Microsoft Office) a library seats availability dashboard was realized and shared with other libraries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TEXTILE technology ,BLENDED learning ,PROJECT method in teaching ,EDUCATIONAL technology - Abstract
In the Faculty of Engineering and Mathematics of Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, a new module "Textile Technologies" was started two years ago. Offered for all study directions in the faculty as well as for the students from the Faculty of Design, the module has to be based on blended learning due to the impossibility to find a time in which all interested students could join a lecture or a seminar. Lectures are thus presented in the usual form for those who have time to listen; the other students find the learning material in their Ilias group in the intranet. Instead of meeting at strictly defined times for seminars or practical courses, the students form groups during the first two weeks of the semester and find a research topic of their interest on which they work regularly during the semester, mostly in the lab, but also partly at home. The exam is correspondingly conducted in the form of "project work", opposite to written or oral examination. Although most of the students never hear the lectures "live", the projects are usually successful, with several of them resulting in reviewed papers or posters presented during conferences. Especially the broad range of interdisciplinary skills and topics leads to completely new ideas and solutions for diverse problems. Working together with designers, biotechnologists, mechanical engineers, industrial engineers, students of regenerative energies, mechatronics, and other study directions enables covering a wide area of textile-related subjects. In this way, the students not only learn a lot about textile technologies, but also get an insight into scientific methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper deals with assessing the efficiency of the faculties of universities of applied sciences. A model based on Data Envelopment Analysis was created, using specifically the CCR alternative. It is an input-oriented method, assuming the constant returns to scale. The model was subsequently validated on an example of a specific university. The results clearly show that the model was able to determine how and to which extent a given faculty is effective. It also provides the assessor with a tool to manage the efficiency of the faculty, as it is able to identify the causes of possible ineffectiveness. Further research focuses on the model´s applicability in the environment of all universities of applied sciences ideally all over the world.

The growth of companies is critical in the renewal of any nation. Research has shown that companies collaborating with higher education are more innovative and development oriented, and more likely to grow in staffing and turnover and to penetrate to international markets. The new public management ideology, especially wrapped up in a funding method, has gradually forced the university of applied sciences (UAS) research, development, and innovation (RDI) services to enhance the performance in the industry. By productization, UAS are to adopt the design thinking ideology, to introduce service-dominant logic, and enhance public-private partnership. With well-designed services, the social and environmental impacts of UAS are intensified. It is the outmost target of new public management. With its constructive research approach, this dissertation was aimed at generating a new contribution to the conduct of RDI activities in the UAS context. It demonstrates the dimensions that alter the UAS RDI service encountering conditions. Furthermore, the study considers the challenges and cornerstones of the prevailing customer-oriented business model and reframes the uniform, systematic model to the UAS RDI service encountering process. This research is unique, as the academic service encountering process from the perspective of productization has seldom been the key issue investigated in research. The practical significance of the dissertation is to contribute to the exchange and experience of the UAS-industry collaboration. Tulosten avulla on mahdollista uudistaa ammattikorkeakoulujen TKI-toiminnan menettelytapoja.

Open Access at Universities of Applied Sciences and Universities for Teacher Education – Results of two studies from Baden-Württemberg and Switzerland The implementation of OA at practice-oriented universities stands apart from national funding measures and has been little researched so far. Two projects, one each from Switzerland and Baden-Wuerttemberg, approach this research topos from two different perspectives: The Baden-Wuerttemberg project surveyed researchers (n=563) on their basic attitude towards Open Access Publishing, while the Swiss project with the same focus at PH/FH (n=25) analysed publication output and conducted interviews with publishers/editors (n=11). Information, funding and technology can be identified as crucial factors for the transition to Open Access.

This article looks at third mission activities as an integral part of universities of applied sciences (UAS) and sheds light on the wide portfolio of third stream initiatives at the Austrian applied higher education sector. In a pilot study, this research explores how the sector (consisting of 21 UAS) perceives its role as an enabler for prosperity, innovation and knowledge transfer in the local areas. In addition, we sought to identify the wide range of potential rationales behind regional engagement, attempted to differentiate between concepts that primarily target the traditional roles of universities (teaching and research) and seek to integrate third mission elements (Entrepreneurial University, Triple Helix, Mode 2) with an eye on economic gains and those that foreground additional responsibilities at the tertiary level for societal purposes. In this sense, we sought to carve out to what extent institutions also engage in third mission activities predominantly for non-economic reasons (Engaged University, Regional Innovation Systems, Sustainable University). Such a differentiation may have the potential to outline the paradigms for third mission activities in a more systematic and structured way. In addition, this analysis may allow Austrian UAS to make more informed decisions along the lines of third-stream initiatives that are based on their strategic positioning and profile.

- Abstract
The practical significance of the dissertation is to contribute to the exchange and experience of the UAS-industry collaboration., Tiivistelmä Korkeakouluyhteistyötä tekevät yritykset ovat innovatiivisempia ja kehittämisorientoituneempia, useammin voimakkaan kasvuhakuisia, henkilöstömäärältään ja liikevaihdoltaan suurempia ja toimivat useammin valtakunnallisilla ja kansainvälisillä markkinoilla. Tulosten avulla on mahdollista uudistaa ammattikorkeakoulujen TKI-toiminnan menettelytapoja.

The relevance of this research is based on the standpoint of the epistemological methodology focusing on the quality of the profession cognition. Therefore, it is presumed that the quality of vocational education is determined by the variable personality traits of teachers (extraversion, openness towards experience and innovation, consciousness, agreeableness, neuroticism). The research object of the current study is the correlation between the personality traits of university of applied sciences teachers and vocational teachers and the curriculum components. The research aims at identifying the correlation between the motives of vocational school and university of applied sciences teacher activities, educational technologies they use, professional roles and their personality traits, as well as identifying the essential differences of the mentioned variables. The quantitative and qualitative research strategies were employed allowing the researchers to perceive and assess the parameters of the correlation between the professional identity of teachers, meaningfulness in pedagogical work, motivation and educational content. The research results revealed that the social, extrinsic, introjected and identified regulation motivation in vocational schools and universities of applied sciences vary considerably; in universities of applied sciences social and identified regulation motivations manifest themselves, whereas in vocational schools a lot of demotivating factors related to the problems of vocational student identity, career prestige of a vocational teacher and external motivation, are observed. The role of vocational school and university of applied sciences teachers in the didactic process also varies: university of applied sciences lecturers identify themselves in the position of the teacher-andragogue, whereas vocational school teachers see their role as a professional (expert). Moreover, the principles of social constructivism in pedagogy and andragogy are more effective among university of applied sciences lecturers, while vocational school teachers often have to rely on the behaviouristic principles of pedagogy for educational assessment and the enhancement of student motivation. This paper is written in Japanese for Japanese more broader researchers as the second publication of the online collection’s paper for the 16th Conference of the Asian Academic Society for Vocational Education and Training (December, 2020), which was titled as “Conflicts between Japanese Structure and German Model in Higher Vocational Education” (English paper: http://www.ubonasm.net/aasvet2020/program/ [December, 01,2020] ). It also tries to clarify the communalities and differences among the earliest model of German University of Applied Sciences, Korean Junior and Technical College as a front runner of Japan, and the newer Japanese Professional University. Analyses are conducted by using of some descriptors developed by some preceding studies and Terada’s three dimensions model. As results, we could make clear that the system design in Japan has triple sub systems, university (German type), college (American type) and articulated course of two stage (Korean type). From the view point of the relevance to occupations, in contrast to other two countries which they focus on technical occupations, Japan tends to allocate both kind of majors, occupational and broader industry- oriented ones. In the aspect of curricula, liberal arts and field practicums are characteristic as the didactical conditions, and the latter lines with Germany in the quantity level. The conflict between American-Japanese and German-Japanese model will continue, because there are quite few and short history for construction of German model in Japan. But we can notice the reformation of Japanese model by the further expansion of such universities.

Open Science (OS) and Research has reached mixed maturity levels in Finland. The meaning of the national project in the ecosystem of Finnish universities of applied sciences (UAS) is to enhance and elaborate OS and Open Education (OE) activities. Future actions were defined based on a survey and interviews carried out in the Finnish UAS sector during 2018 and 2019. The aim of both data collections was to evaluate the current status and attitudes towards open Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) among staff members. Another purpose was to define the need for internal support services concerning open RDI and OE and to identify knowledge gaps. The results revealed several gaps in understanding OS and OE initiatives. Real-life actions were mostly vague, and the respondents experienced the need for support. On the other hand, the attitudes towards open RDI were positive, and the issue aroused questions and reflections. This study revealed gaps in knowledge and actions in Finnish UAS sectors. These results have been the basis of development actions such as joint workshops, educational webinars, and common instructions. The future plan includes the establishment of an experts' network for supporting open RDI and Education.

In this large-scale study, higher education teachers’ (n = 1028) descriptions of their own learning are examined with quantitative analyses. The study follows up an earlier qualitative study that, using a phenomenographic approach, identified four different ways in which teachers at Finnish universities of applied sciences described their own learning. The purpose of the present study was to find out how teachers’ descriptions were divided into the categories formed in the previous study and to examine whether teachers’ descriptions of their learning differ according to their position, gender and age. The results show that most teachers described their learning as an individual activity. Differences between teacher, gender and age groups were found. Lecturers were represented more often than senior lecturers in the category of individual learning, and male teachers more often than their female colleagues. Individualistic learning was especially typical of lecturers under 50 years of age. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Purpose: Horizontal trust among lecturers at universities seems to be particularly unexplored in the literature. The main purpose of this paper is to fi ll in this gap and is an attempt to answer the question: how lecturers perceive, address and reconstruct trust in their teaching. Methodology: The data; narratives of lecturers, consists of told and written stories (N=23) collected in Finland, Hungary and the United Kingdom. Collecting multinational dataset is based on the European attempt of the harmonisation and internationalisation of education and on the cooperation of educational institutions. The narratives were analysed in two stages: fi rst by narrative analysis and then by condensing textual data. Findings: The results argue that trust creates trusting atmosphere between lecturers. Without trust cooperation between lecturers creates tension and diff iculties. Trust creates welfare and good results for teaching. Without trust the lecturers cannot give their best to the students, colleagues and all in all to the university of the applied sciences. Trust makes it possible to change teaching methods and organisational structures at the universities of the applied sciences. Without trust working methods are diff icult to develop. Trust contributes to good cooperation between lecturers and more positive results to develop academic education in Europe. Originality/value: The results of this paper are consistent with previous research, however they shed light in much more detail on horizontal trust at universities emphasizing, among others, the fact that trust impacts the organization's success, and strengthens intra- and inter-organizational relationships. Based on this evaluation, we describe the possibilities and boundaries of UAS’ contribution to the development of their students’ ethical compass.

The recruitment of international students is one way of recruiting foreign highly skilled labour. International graduates increase the availability of labour if they are able to enter the host country’s workforce upon graduation. If the aim is to educate the students for the local labour market, the employment of international students should be supported during education. This article describes the findings of a study on the employment of international graduates from universities of applied sciences in Finland and graduates’ perspectives on how higher education institutions can support the employability of international graduates. The research data were gathered in 2008-2010 through semistructured interviews. According to the graduates the most important areas for development in education were reflection on professional development, teaching of local language and culture, orientation to learning methods used, mix of international and local students, connections to work life, job-seeking skills and cultural competence.

Asiantunti- jayhteisössä keskeistä on osaamisen jakaminen. Tämä vaatii uudistumiskykyä, joka avaa mahdollisuuksia opetuksen uudistamiselle ja tutkimus-, kehittämis- ja innovaatio- saamisen vahvistumiselle., This article describes the linkage between education and research and development in universities of applied sciences, especially those factors which supports the linkage either or prevents the linkage between these two tasks in higher education. The empirical data was collected in spring 2011 during a panel discussion, in which a group of personnel, students and working life partners participated in Savonia University of Applied Sciences. The aim of the panel discussion was to stir up conversation about working life oriented teaching and learning model (OIS-model) among university students, lecturers and working life partners. The OIS-model, which has been adopted in Savonia UAS, requires development of pedagogy in a UAS. Furthermore there is a need for open spaces for joint and collaborative learning, where the learners comprises of university students, university staff experts and experts from working life. Learning is collaborative and new knowledge is being produced by matching different kind of competences of actors. When developing the working life oriented education model (OIS- model), especially courage is needed to change the roles of different actors. In lecturers work, the role of mentor and supporter, furthermore the partnership role, is being highlighted. A crucial point in an expert community is knowledge sharing. This all requires ability and skills to renew. In general, the OIS-model supports possibilities for development of education and teaching and strengthening competences of research, development and innovations in UAS.

There are many quantitative surveys on the choice of courses of study by Austrian students such as, for example, the student social survey regularly commissioned by the Institute of Advanced Studies in Vienna. Both, the distribution of students among the various types of higher education and the number of enrolments in individual fields of study seem to have been researched to a great extent. The aim of this research work is to pursue the qualitative aspects when choosing the appropriate form of study, thereby bringing into focus a possible connection with the social origin of the students. Using guideline-based interviews, an attempt is made to get to the bottom of the motivation behind the decision to study at an Austrian university of applied sciences. The subsequent qualitative content analysis is intended to shed light on what relevance the availability of resources - such as economic, cultural and social capital according to Pierre Bourdieu - still has in the use of educational offers in the tertiary education sector today. In conclusion, a project is outlined which tries to counteract, in a practical way, possible shortcomings in the distribution of educational opportunities by bringing young people of low social origin closer to the educational offers of the Austrian higher education sector.
