Bathtub models are used to study urban traffic within a certain area. They do not require to take into account the detailed network topology. The emergence of different bathtub models has raised the question of which model can provide more robust and accurate results under different demand scenarios and network properties. This paper presents a comparative simulation analysis of the accumulation-based model and trip-based models under static and dynamic trip distance distribution (TDD) scenarios. Network accumulation was used to validate and compare the performance of the bathtub models with results from the macroscopic traffic simulation with dynamic traffic assignment. Three networks were built to explore the effect of network properties on the accuracy of bathtub models. Two are from the network of Delft, the Netherlands, and one is a reference toy network. The findings show that the time dependency of TDD can increase the errors in bathtub models. Using TDD in different aggregation levels can significantly influence the performance of bathtub models during demand transition periods. The state transition speed of networks is also found to be influential. Future research could explore the effects of dynamic TDD under congested situations and develop enhanced bathtub models that can better account for different network state transition speeds.

The integration of autonomous vehicles (AVs) into transportation systems presents an unprecedented opportunity to enhance road safety and efficiency. However, understanding the interactions between AVs and human-driven vehicles (HVs) at intersections remains an open research question. This study aims to bridge this gap by examining behavioral differences and adaptations of AVs and HVs at unsignalized intersections by utilizing two comprehensive AV datasets from Waymo and Lyft. Using a systematic methodology, the research identifies and analyzes merging and crossing conflicts by calculating key safety and efficiency metrics, including time to collision (TTC), post-encroachment time (PET), maximum required deceleration (MRD), time advantage (TA), and speed and acceleration profiles. The findings reveal a paradox in mixed traffic flow: while AVs maintain larger safety margins, their conservative behavior can lead to unexpected situations for human drivers, potentially causing unsafe conditions. From a performance point of view, human drivers exhibit more consistent behavior when interacting with AVs versus other HVs, suggesting AVs may contribute to harmonizing traffic flow patterns. Moreover, notable differences were observed between Waymo and Lyft vehicles, which highlights the importance of considering manufacturer-specific AV behaviors in traffic modeling and management strategies for the safe integration of AVs. The use of partially automated driving systems raises concerns about potential responsibility issues, posing risk to the system safety, acceptance, and adoption of these technologies. The concept of meaningful human control has emerged in response to the responsibility gap problem, requiring the fulfillment of two conditions, tracking and tracing. While this concept has provided important philosophical and design insights on automated driving systems, there is currently little knowledge on how meaningful human control relates to subjective experiences of actual users of these systems. To address this gap, our study aimed to investigate the alignment between the degree of meaningful human control and drivers' perceptions of safety and trust in a real-world partially automated driving system. We utilized previously collected data from interviews with Tesla "Full Self-Driving" (FSD) Beta users, investigating the alignment between the user perception and how well the system was tracking the users' reasons. We found that tracking of users' reasons for driving tasks (such as safe maneuvers) correlated with perceived safety and trust, albeit with notable exceptions. Surprisingly, failure to track lane changing and braking reasons was not necessarily associated with negative perceptions of safety. However, the failure of the system to track expected maneuvers in dangerous situations always resulted in low trust and perceived lack of safety. Overall, our analyses highlight alignment points but also possible discrepancies between perceived safety and trust on the one hand, and meaningful human control on the other hand. Detecting abnormal driving behavior is critical for road traffic safety and the evaluation of drivers' behavior. With the advancement of machine learning (ML) algorithms and the accumulation of naturalistic driving data, many ML models have been adopted for abnormal driving behavior detection (also referred to in this paper as anomalies). Most existing ML-based detectors rely on (fully) supervised ML methods, which require substantial labeled data. However, ground truth labels are not always available in the real world, and labeling large amounts of data is tedious. Thus, there is a need to explore unsupervised or semi-supervised methods to make the anomaly detection process more feasible and efficient. To fill this research gap, this study analyzes large-scale real-world data revealing several abnormal driving behaviors (e.g., sudden acceleration, rapid lane-changing) and develops a Hierarchical Extreme Learning Machines (HELM) based semi-supervised ML method using partly labeled data to accurately detect the identified abnormal driving behaviors. Moreover, previous ML-based approaches predominantly utilized basic vehicle motion features (such as velocity and acceleration) to label and detect abnormal driving behaviors, while this study seeks to introduce Surrogate Measures of Safety (SMoS) as input features for ML models to improve the detection performance. Results from extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed semi-supervised ML model with the introduced SMoS serving as important features. The proposed semi-supervised ML method outperforms other baseline semi-supervised or unsupervised methods regarding various metrics, e.g., delivering the best accuracy at 99.58% and the best F-1 measure at 0.9913. The burgeoning navigation services using digital maps provide great convenience to drivers. Nevertheless, the presence of anomalies in lane rendering map images occasionally introduces potential hazards, as such anomalies can be misleading to human drivers and consequently contribute to unsafe driving conditions. In response to this concern and to accurately and effectively detect the anomalies, this paper transforms lane rendering image anomaly detection into a classification problem and proposes a four-phase pipeline consisting of data pre-processing, self-supervised pre-training with the masked image modeling (MiM) method, customized fine-tuning using cross-entropy based loss with label smoothing, and post-processing to tackle it leveraging state-of-the-art deep learning techniques, especially those involving Transformer models. Various experiments verify the effectiveness of the proposed pipeline. Results indicate that the proposed pipeline exhibits superior performance in lane rendering image anomaly detection, and notably, the self-supervised pre-training with MiM can greatly enhance the detection accuracy while significantly reducing the total training time. For instance, employing the Swin Transformer with Uniform Masking as self-supervised pretraining (Swin-Trans-UM) yielded a heightened accuracy at 94.77% and an improved Area Under The Curve (AUC) score of 0.9743 compared with the pure Swin Transformer without pre-training (Swin-Trans) with an accuracy of 94.01% and an AUC of 0.9498. The fine-tuning epochs were dramatically reduced to 41 from the original 280. Electric mobility hubs (eHUBS) are locations where multiple shared electric modes including electric cars and e-bikes are available. To assess their potential to reduce private car use, it is important to investigate to what extent people would switch to eHUBS modes after their introduction. Moreover, people may adapt their behaviour differently depending on their current travel mode. This study is based on stated preference data collected in Amsterdam. We analysed the data using mixed logit models. We found users of different modes not only have a varied general preference for different shared modes, but also have different sensitivity for attributes such as travel time and cost. Compared to car users, public transport users are more likely to switch towards the eHUBS modes. People who bike and walk have strong inertia, but the percentage choosing eHUBS modes doubles when the trip distance is longer (5 or 10 km).

A shared space area is a low-speed urban area in which pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles share the road, often relying on informal interaction rules and greatly expanding freedom of movement for pedestrians and cyclists. While shared space has the potential to improve pedestrian priority in urban areas, it presents unique challenges for pedestrian-AV interaction due to the absence of a clear right of way. The current study applied Virtual Reality (VR) experiments to investigate pedestrian-AV interaction in a shared space, with a particular focus on the impact of external human-machine interfaces (eHMIs) on pedestrian crossing behavior. Fifty-three participants took part in the VR experiment and three eHMI conditions were investigated: no eHMI, eHMI with a pedestrian sign on the windshield, and eHMI with a projected zebra crossing on the road. Data collected via VR and questionnaires were used for objective and subjective measures to understand pedestrian-AV interaction. The study revealed that the presence of eHMI had an impact on participants' gazing behavior but not on their crossing decisions. Additionally, participants had a positive user experience with the current VR setting and expressed a high level of trust and perceived safety during their interaction with the AV. These findings highlight the potential of utilizing VR to explore and understand pedestrian-AV interactions.

Traffic scenarios in roundabouts pose substantial complexity for automated driving. Manually mapping all possible scenarios into a state space is labor-intensive and challenging. Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) with its ability to learn from interacting with the environment emerges as a promising solution for training such automated driving models. This study explores, employs, and implements various DRL algorithms, namely Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG), Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO), and Trust Region Policy Optimization (TRPO) to instruct automated vehicles' driving through roundabouts. The driving state space, action space, and reward function are designed. The reward function considers safety, efficiency, comfort, and energy consumption to align with real-world requirements. All three tested DRL algorithms succeed in enabling automated vehicles to drive through the roundabout. To holistically evaluate the performance of these algorithms, this study establishes an evaluation methodology considering multiple indicators such as safety, efficiency, and comfort level. A method employing the Analytic Hierarchy Process is also developed to weigh these evaluation indicators. Experimental results on various testing scenarios reveal that the TRPO algorithm outperforms DDPG and PPO in terms of safety and efficiency, and PPO performs best in terms of comfort level. Lastly, to verify the model's adaptability and robustness regarding other driving scenarios, this study also deploys the model trained by TRPO to a range of different testing scenarios, e.g., highway driving and merging. Experimental results demonstrate that the TRPO model trained on only roundabout driving scenarios exhibits a certain degree of proficiency in highway driving and merging scenarios. Ride-sourcing drivers as individual service suppliers can freely adopt their own relocation strategies including waiting, cruising freely, or following the platform recommendations. These decisions substantially impact the balance between supply and demand, and consequently affect system performance. We conducted a stated choice experiment to study the searching behaviour of ride-sourcing drivers and examine novel policies. A unique dataset of 576 ride-sourcing drivers working in the US was collected and a choice modelling approach was used to estimate the effects of multiple existing and hypothetical attributes. The results suggest that relocation strategies of ride-sourcing drivers considerably vary between different groups of drivers. Surge pricing significantly stimulates drivers to head towards the designated areas. However, the distance between the location of drivers and surge or high-demand areas demotivates them to follow the platform repositioning recommendations. We discuss the implications of our findings for various platform policies on real-time information sharing and platform repositioning guidance.

The increase in perception capabilities of connected mobile sensor platforms (e.g., self-driving vehicles, drones, and robots) leads to an extensive surge of sensed features at various temporal and spatial scales. Beyond their traditional use for safe operation, available observations could enable to see how and where people move on sidewalks and cycle paths, to eventually obtain a complete microscopic and macroscopic picture of the traffic flows in a larger area. This paper proposes a new method for advanced traffic applications, tracking an unknown and varying number of moving targets (e.g., pedestrians or cyclists) constrained by a road network, using mobile (e.g., vehicles) spatially distributed sensor platforms. The key contribution in this paper is to introduce the concept of network bound targets into the multi-target tracking problem, and hence to derive a network-constrained multi-hypotheses tracker (NC-MHT) to fully utilize the available road information. This is done by introducing a target representation, comprising a traditional target tracking representation and a discrete component placing the target on a given segment in the network. A simulation study shows that the method performs well in comparison to the standard MHT filter in free space. Results particularly highlight network-constraint effects for more efficient target predictions over extended periods of time, and in the simplification of the measurement association process, as compared to not utilizing a network structure. Accurate and reliable lane detection is vital for the safe performance of lane-keeping assistance and lane departure warning systems. However, under certain challenging circumstances, it is difficult to get satisfactory performance in accurately detecting the lanes from one single image as mostly done in current literature. Since lane markings are continuous lines, the lanes that are difficult to be accurately detected in the current single image can potentially be better deduced if information from previous frames is incorporated. This study proposes a novel hybrid spatial-temporal (ST) sequence-to-one deep learning architecture. This architecture makes full use of the ST information in multiple continuous image frames to detect the lane markings in the very last frame. Specifically, the hybrid model integrates the following aspects: (a) the single image feature extraction module equipped with the spatial convolutional neural network; (b) the ST feature integration module constructed by ST recurrent neural network; (c) the encoder-decoder structure, which makes this image segmentation problem work in an end-to-end supervised learning format. The performance of ride-sourcing services such as Uber and Lyft is determined by the collective choices of individual drivers who are not only chauffeurs but private fleet providers. In such a context, ride-sourcing drivers are free to decide whether to accept or decline ride requests assigned by the ride-hailing platform. Drivers' ride acceptance behaviour can significantly influence system performance in terms of riders' waiting time (associated with the level of service), drivers' occupation rate and idle time (related to drivers' income), and platform revenue and reputation. Hence, it is of great importance to identify the underlying determinants of the ride acceptance behaviour of drivers. To this end, we collected a unique dataset from ride-sourcing drivers working in the United States and the Netherlands through a cross-sectional stated preference experiment designed based upon disparate information conveyed to the respondents. Using a choice modelling approach, we estimated the effects of various existing and hypothetical attributes influencing the ride acceptance choice. Employment status, experience level with the platform, and working shift are found to be the key individual-specific determinants. Part-time and beginning drivers who work on midweek days (Monday-Thursday) have a higher tendency to accept ride offers. Results also reveal that pickup time, which is the travel time between the driver's location and the rider's waiting spot, has a negative impact on ride acceptance. Moreover, the findings suggest that a guaranteed tip (i.e., the minimum amount of tip that is indicated upfront by the prospective rider, a feature that is currently not available) and an additional income due to surge pricing are valued noticeably higher than trip fare. Platooning on highways with connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) has attracted considerable attention, while how to mange and coordinate platoons in urban networks remains largely an open question. This scientific gap mainly results from the maneuver complexity on urban roads, making it difficult to model the platoon formation process. Inspired by flocking behaviors in nature, this paper proposed a two-dimensional model to describe CAV group dynamics. The model is formulated based on potential fields in planar coordinates, which is composed of the inter-vehicle potential field and the cross-section potential field. The inter-vehicle potential field enables CAVs to attract each other when vehicle gaps are larger than the equilibrium distance, and repel each other otherwise. It also generates incentives for lane change maneuvers to join a platoon or to comply with the traffic management layer. The cross-section potential field is able to mimic lane keeping behavior and it also creates resistance to avoid unnecessary lane changes at very low incentives. These modeling principles can also be applied to human-driven vehicles in the mixed traffic environment. Behavioral plausibility of the model in terms of car-following rationality and car-following safety is demonstrated analytically and further verified with simulation in typical driving scenarios. The model is computationally efficient and can provide insights into platoon operations in urban networks.

Trajectory planning and coordination for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) have been studied at isolated ``signal-free'' intersections and in ``signal-free'' corridors under the fully CAV environment in the literature. Most of the existing studies are based on the definition of approaching and exit lanes. The route a vehicle takes to pass through an intersection is determined from its movement. That is, only the origin and destination arms are included. This study proposes a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model to optimize vehicle trajectories at an isolated ``signal-free'' intersection without lane allocation, which is denoted as ``lane-allocation-free'' (LAF) control. Each lane can be used as both approaching and exit lanes for all vehicle movements including left-turn, through, and right-turn. A vehicle can take a flexible route by way of multiple arms to pass through the intersection. In this way, the spatial-temporal resources are expected to be fully utilized. The interactions between vehicle trajectories are modeled explicitly at the microscopic level. Vehicle routes and trajectories (i.e., car-following and lane-changing behaviors) at the intersection are optimized in one unified framework for system optimality in terms of total vehicle delay. Considering varying traffic conditions, the planning horizon is adaptively adjusted in the implementation procedure of the proposed model to make a balance between solution feasibility and computational burden. This paper analyses a class of route choice models with closed-form probability expressions, namely, Generalized Multivariate Extreme Value (GMEV) models. A large group of these models emerge from different utility formulas that combine systematic utility and random error terms. Twelve models are captured in a single discrete choice framework. The additive utility formula leads to the known logit family, being multinomial, path-size, paired combinatorial and link-nested. For the multiplicative formulation only the multinomial and path-size weibit models have been identified; this study also identifies the paired combinatorial and link-nested variations, and generalizes the path-size variant. Furthermore, a new traveller's decision rule based on the multiplicative utility formula with a reference route is presented. Here the traveller chooses exclusively based on the differences between routes. This leads to four new GMEV models. We assess the models qualitatively based on a generic structure of route utility with random foreseen travel times, for which we empirically identify that the variance of utility should be different from thus far assumed for multinomial probit and logit-kernel models. The expected travellers' behaviour and model-behaviour under simple network changes are analysed. Furthermore, all models are estimated and validated on an illustrative network example with long distance and short distance origin-destination pairs. The new multiplicative models based on differences outperform the additive models in both tests.

Driver assistance systems support drivers in operating vehicles in a safe, comfortable and efficient way, and thus may induce changes in traffic flow characteristics. This paper puts forward a receding horizon control framework to model driver assistance and cooperative systems. The accelerations of automated vehicles are controlled to optimise a cost function, assuming other vehicles driving at stationary conditions over a prediction horizon. The flexibility of the framework is demonstrated with controller design of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Cooperative ACC (C-ACC) systems. The proposed ACC and C-ACC model characteristics are investigated analytically, with focus on equilibrium solutions and stability properties. The proposed ACC model produces plausible human car-following behaviour and is unconditionally locally stable. By careful tuning of parameters, the ACC model generates similar stability characteristics as human driver models. The proposed C-ACC model results in convective downstream and absolute string instability, but not convective upstream string instability observed in human-driven traffic and in the ACC model.
