Several EU Member States argue that active afforestation of degraded peatlands should be recognized as a restoration measure under the Nature Restoration Law (NRL). In this perspective paper, we discuss the scientific evidence on the greenhouse gas fluxes of peatlands under forestry and its limitations, uncertainties and evidence gaps. In our opinion: Afforestation of drained peatlands, while maintaining their drained state, is not equivalent to ecosystem restoration. This approach will not restore the peatland ecosystem's flora, fauna, and functions. Currently, there is insufficient evidence to support the long-term climate change mitigation benefits of active afforestation of drained peatlands. Most studies only focus on the short-term gains in standing biomass and rarely explore the full life cycle emissions associated with afforestation of drained peatlands. Thus, it is unclear whether the CO2 sequestration of a forest on drained peatland can offset the carbon loss from the peat over the long term. In some ecosystems, such as abandoned or certain cutaway peatlands, afforestation may provide short-term benefits for climate change mitigation compared to taking no action. However, this approach violates the concept of sustainability by sacrificing the most space-effective carbon store of the terrestrial biosphere, the long-term peat store, for a shorter-term, less space-effective, and more vulnerable carbon store, namely tree biomass. Consequently, active afforestation of drained peatlands is not a viable option for climate mitigation under the EU Nature Restoration Law. To restore degraded peatlands, hydrological conditions must first be improved, primarily through rewetting.

Drainage-induced shifts in physicochemical peat properties are irreversible on a decadal time span. We investigated whether carbon emissions from fen peat can be estimated using two proxies: current water levels and peat properties (as affected by drainage history, i.e. degradation legacy). We collected bare peat monoliths from a long-term drained and an undrained fen. In a crossed design, half of the monoliths was kept wet and the other half was drained. Highest carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions came from the originally undrained peat under low water levels (607 mmol m-2 d-1). Overall, CO2 emissions were primarily determined by drainage history, with 141 % higher emissions from the originally undrained peat. In addition, low current water levels correlated with 42 % higher emissions. Highest methane (CH4) emissions were measured in the originally undrained peat under high water levels (123 mmol m-2 d-1). Overall, CH4 emissions were primarily determined by current water levels, with 430 % higher emissions under high water levels. In addition, the originally undrained peat had 180 % higher emissions. The lower C efflux from originally drained peat correlated with lower concentrations of methanogens and of easily-degradable carbon substrate (cellulose). We conclude that substrate limitation in long-term drained fens ensures low baseline carbon emissions, which provides opportunities for renewed carbon sequestration by rewetting.

De duurzaamheid van waardevolle natuurtypen staat onder druk, doordat kwelafhankelijke ecosystemen in beekdalen gevoed worden door grondwater met hoge nitraat- en/of sulfaatconcentraties. Dit wordt veroorzaakt door landgebruik en verhoogde atmosferische stikstofdepositie in intrekgebieden. De toevoer van stikstof door grondwater is vaak veel hoger dan kritische waarden voor atmosferische depositie en de belasting met sulfaat kan ook zeer hoog zijn. Dergelijke hoge stoffluxen kunnen leiden tot een sterke afbraak van organisch materiaal, sterke eutrofiëring en opbouw van een hoge verzuringscapaciteit. Vervuiling van grondwater met nitraat en sulfaat is daarom voor beekdalnatuur een van de grote knelpunten en vereist meer aandacht in beleid en herstel van natuurgebieden.

Een eeuwenlange historie van antropogene ontwatering en versnippering heeft diepe sporen achtergelaten in het Europese beekdallandschap. Ongestoorde beekdalvenen komen nauwelijks meer voor, en de venen die nog resteren hebben vaak grote veranderingen doorgemaakt in biogeochemie en vegetatie. Veenherstel door grootschalige vernatting is nu de enige weg voorwaarts, maar het is de vraag of deze maatregel toereikend is voor biogeochemisch herstel.

De weg vooruitOp 19 oktober 2020 verscheen de rapportage ‘State of Nature in the EU’ (EEA, 2020), waarin gesteld wordt dat op Europees niveau maar liefst 81% van de habitats in slechte staat verkeert, waarbij veengebieden, graslanden en duinhabitats het meest achteruitgaan. Ontginning, verdroging en vermesting hebben ook in beekdalvenen in de Lage Landen gezorgd voor een enorme achteruitgang in biodiversiteit en een forse toename van de uitstoot van broeikasgassen naar de lucht en nutriënten naar het oppervlaktewater. Gezien de huidige klimaat- en biodiversiteitscrisis staan we meer dan ooit voor een keuze: breken we het veen verder af of kiezen we voor natuurherstel en vergroting van de ecosysteemdiensten die beekdalvenen leveren?

In Nederland en Vlaanderen zorgen duizenden kilometers aan beken en beekjes voor de natuurlijke afvoer van grond-, regen- en oppervlaktewater. Ze liggen in beekdalen, aaneengeschakelde laagten in het landschap die meestal al bestonden lang voordat de huidige beek werd gevormd. Beekdalen zijn complexe ecohydrologische systemen met een veelheid aan bodemkundige, hydrologische en vegetatiekundige gradiënten. Veel beekdalen zijn dan ook hotspots van biodiversiteit.

[A. aethiopicum (Burm.f.) Bech, A. friesiorum C.Chr. and affinity) in Kivu (DR Congo) which are known to comprise several different morphotypes. In total, 15 specimens of A. friesiorum C.Chr. (and affinity) and 15 of A. aethiopicum (Burm.f.) Bech. were sequenced for three molecular markers (trnG, trnL-F and rps4-trnS). Prior to analyzing the combined chloroplast data, each marker was examined separately to recognize the phylogenetic differences amongst the chloroplast datasets. Sequence datasets were analyzed using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference, in order to obtain solid phylogenetic results. To consolidate the phylogenetic information obtained, we observed the spores of corresponding herbarium specimens using scanning electron microscopy. Phylogenetic results demonstrated that each of the Asplenium L. species studied here comprises at least two clearly delimited subspecies in Kivu [A. friesiorum kivuensis Mangambu nov.* and A. friesiorum C.Chr.; A. aethiopicum (Burm.f.) Bech. subsp. aethiopicum and A. aethiopicum (Burm.f.) Bech. subsp. tripinnatum (Baker) A.F. Braithw]. The observed spores showed differences in shape and size between the subspecies studied of A. aethiopicum (Burm.f.) Bech., species A. friesiorum C.Chr. and A. kivuensis Mangambu nov.*.
