Quantum materials are driving a technology revolution in sensing, communication, and computing, while simultaneously testing many core theories of the past century. Materials such as topological insulators, complex oxides, quantum dots, color center hosting semiconductors, and other types of strongly correlated materials can exhibit exotic properties such as edge conductivity, multiferroicity, magnetoresistance, single photon emission, and optical-spin locking. These emergent properties arise and depend strongly on the materials detailed atomic scale structure, including atomic defects, dopants, and lattice stacking. In this review, after introduction of different classes of quantum materials and quantum excitations, we describe how progress in the field of electron microscopy, including in situ and in operando EM, can accelerate advances in quantum materials. Our review describes EM methods including: i) principles and operation modes of EM, ii) EM spectroscopies, such as electron energy loss spectroscopy, cathodoluminescence, and electron energy gain spectroscopy, iii) 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy, iv) dynamic and ultrafast EM, v) complimentary ultrafast spectroscopies, and vi) atomic electron tomography. We discuss how these methods inform structure function relations in quantum materials down to the picometer scale and femtosecond time resolution, and how they enable high resolution manipulation of quantum materials. Among numerous results, our review highlights how EM has enabled identification of the 3D structure of quantum defects, measuring reversible and metastable dynamics of quantum excitations, mapping exciton states and single photon emission, measuring nanoscale thermal transport and coupled excitation dynamics, and measuring the internal electric field of quantum heterointerfaces, all at the quantum materials intrinsic atomic and near atomic-length scale.

Materials modelling and processing require experiments to visualize and quantify how external excitations drive the evolution of deep subsurface structure and defects that determine properties. Today, 3D movies with ~100-nm resolution of crystalline structure are regularly acquired in minutes to hours using X-ray diffraction based imaging. We present an X-ray microscope that improves this time resolution to <100 femtoseconds, with images attainable even from a single X-ray pulse. Using this, we resolve the propagation of 18-km/s acoustic waves in mm-sized diamond crystals, and demonstrate how mechanical energy thermalizes from picosecond to microsecond timescales. Our approach unlocks a vast range of new experiments of materials phenomena with intricate structural dynamics at ultrafast timescales.

The structures, strain fields, and defect distributions in solid materials underlie the mechanical and physical properties across numerous applications. Many modern microstructural microscopy tools characterize crystal grains, domains and defects required to map lattice distortions or deformation, but are limited to studies of the (near) surface. Generally speaking, such tools cannot probe the structural dynamics in a way that is representative of bulk behavior. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction based imaging has long mapped the deeply embedded structural elements, and with enhanced resolution, Dark Field X-ray Microscopy (DFXM) can now map those features with the requisite nm-resolution. However, these techniques still suffer from the required integration times due to limitations from the source and optics. This work extends DFXM to X-ray free electron lasers, showing how the $10^{12}$ photons per pulse available at these sources offer structural characterization down to 100 fs resolution (orders of magnitude faster than current synchrotron images). We introduce the XFEL DFXM setup with simultaneous bright field microscopy to probe density changes within the same volume. This work presents a comprehensive guide to the multi-modal ultrafast high-resolution X-ray microscope that we constructed and tested at two XFELs, and shows initial data demonstrating two timing strategies to study associated reversible or irreversible lattice dynamics.

Time-resolved scattering experiments enable imaging of materials at the molecular scale with femtosecond time resolution. However, in disordered media they provide access to just one radial dimension thus limiting the study of orientational structure and dynamics. Here we introduce a rigorous and practical theoretical framework for predicting and interpreting experiments combining optically induced anisotropy and time-resolved scattering. Using impulsive nuclear Raman and ultrafast X-ray scattering experiments of chloroform and simulations, we demonstrate that this framework can accurately predict and elucidate both the spatial and temporal features of these experiments.

We report observations of nanosecond nanometer scale heterogeneous dynamics in a free flowing colloidal jet revealed by ultrafast x-ray speckle visibility spectroscopy. The nanosecond double-bunch mode of the Linac Coherent Light Source free electron laser enabled the production of pairs of femtosecond coherent hard x-ray pulses. By exploring the anisotropic summed speckle visibility which relates to the correlation functions, we are able to evaluate not only the average particle flow rate in a colloidal nanoparticle jet, but also the heterogeneous flow field within. The reported methodology presented here establishes the foundation for the study of nano- and atomic-scale heterogeneous fluctuations in complex matter using x-ray free electron laser sources.

We use femtosecond resonant soft x-ray scattering to measure the ultrafast optical melting of charge-order correlations in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$. By analyzing both the energy-resolved and energy-integrated order parameter dynamics, we find evidence of a short-lived nonequilibrium state, whose features are compatible with a sliding charge density wave coherently set in motion by the pump. This transient state exhibits shifts in both the quasielastic line energy and its wave vector, as expected from a classical Doppler effect. The wave vector change is indeed found to directly follow the pump propagation direction. These results demonstrate the existence of sliding charge order behavior in an unconventional charge density wave system and underscore the power of ultrafast optical excitation as a tool to coherently manipulate electronic condensates., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, 39 references

Disentangling the dynamics of electrons and nuclei during nonadiabatic molecular transformations remains a considerable experimental challenge. Here we have investigated photoinduced electron transfer dynamics following a metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excitation of the [Fe(bmip)2]2+ photosensitizer, where bmip = 2,6-bis(3-methyl-imidazole-1- ylidine)-pyridine, with simultaneous femtosecond-resolution Fe K{\alpha} and K\b{eta} X-ray Emission Spectroscopy (XES) and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS). This measurement clearly shows temporal oscillations in the XES and WAXS difference signals with the same 278 fs period oscillation. The oscillatory signal originates from an Fe-ligand stretching mode vibrational wavepacket on a triplet metal-centered (3MC) excited state surface. The vibrational wavepacket is created by 40% of the excited population that undergoes electron transfer from the non-equilibrium MLCT excited state to the 3MC excited state with a 110 fs time constant, while the other 60% relaxes to a 3MLCT excited state in parallel. The sensitivity of the K{\alpha} XES spectrum to molecular structure results from core-level vibronic coupling, due to a 0.7% average Fe-ligand bond length difference in the lowest energy geometry of the 1s and 2p core-ionized states. These results highlight the importance of vibronic effects in time-resolved XES experiments and demonstrate the role of metal-centered excited states in the electronic excited state relaxation dynamics of an Fe carbene photosensitizer.

Charge order is universal among high-T$_c$ cuprates but its relevance to superconductivity is not established. It is widely believed that, while static order competes with superconductivity, dynamic order may be favorable and even contribute to Cooper pairing. We use time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering to study the collective dynamics of the charge order in the prototypical cuprate, La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$. We find that, at energy scales $0.4$ meV $ \lesssim \omega \lesssim 2$ meV, the excitations are overdamped and propagate via Brownian-like diffusion. At energy scales below 0.4 meV the charge order exhibits dynamic critical scaling, displaying universal behavior arising from propagation of topological defects. Direct manipulation of the atomic lattice using intense long-wavelength laser pulses has become a viable approach to create new states of matter in complex materials. Conventionally, a high frequency vibrational mode is driven resonantly by a mid-infrared laser pulse and the lattice structure is modified through indirect coupling of this infrared-active phonon to other, lower frequency lattice modulations. Here, we drive the lowest frequency optical phonon in the prototypical transition metal oxide SrTiO3 well into the anharmonic regime with an intense terahertz field. We show that it is possible to transfer energy to higher frequency phonon modes through nonlinear coupling. Our observations are carried out by directly mapping the lattice response to the coherent drive field with femtosecond x-ray pulses, enabling direct visualization of the atomic displacements.

Time-resolved X-ray scattering patterns from photoexcited molecules in solution are in many cases anisotropic at the ultrafast time scales accessible at X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs). This anisotropy arises from the interaction of a linearly polarized UV-vis pump laser pulse with the sample, which induces anisotropic structural changes that can be captured by femtosecond X-ray pulses. In this work we describe a method for quantitative analysis of the anisotropic scattering signal arising from an ensemble of molecules and we demonstrate how its use can enhance the structural sensitivity of the time-resolved X-ray scattering experiment. We apply this method on time-resolved X-ray scattering patterns measured upon photoexcitation of a solvated di-platinum complex at an XFEL and explore the key parameters involved. We show that a combined analysis of the anisotropic and isotropic difference scattering signals in this experiment allows a more precise determination of the main photoinduced structural change in the solute, i.e. the change in Pt-Pt bond length, and yields more information on the excitation channels than the analysis of the isotropic scattering only. Finally, we discuss how the anisotropic transient response of the solvent can enable the determination of key experimental parameters such as the Instrument Response Function., Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of Synchrotron Radiation

We report local field strength enhancement of single-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses in an ultrafast time-resolved x-ray diffraction experiment. We show that patterning the sample with gold microstructures increases the THz field without changing the THz pulse shape or drastically affecting the quality of the x-ray diffraction pattern. We find a five-fold increase in THz-induced x-ray diffraction intensity change in the presence of microstructures on a SrTiO3 thin-film sample., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We study the structural dynamics of photoexcited [Co(terpy)2]2+ in an aqueous solution with ultrafast x-ray diffuse scattering experiments conducted at the Linac Coherent Light Source. Through direct comparisons with density functional theory calculations, our analysis shows that the photoexcitation event leads to elongation of the Co-N bonds, followed by coherent Co-N bond length oscillations arising from the impulsive excitation of a vibrational mode dominated by the symmetrical stretch of all six Co-N bonds. This mode has a period of 0.33 ps and decays on a subpicosecond time scale. We find that the equilibrium bond-elongated structure of the high spin state is established on a single-picosecond time scale and that this state has a lifetime of ~ 7 ps.

A deep understanding of molecular photo-transformations is challenging because of the complex interaction between the configurations of electrons and nuclei. An initial optical excitation dissipates energy into electronic and structural degrees of freedom, often in less than one trillionth (10^-12) of a second. Molecular dynamics induced by photoexcitation have been very successfully studied with femtosecond optical spectroscopies, but electronic and nuclear dynamics are often very difficult to disentangle. X-ray based spectroscopies can reduce the ambiguity between theoretical models and experimental data, but it is only with the recent development of bright ultrafast X-ray sources, that key information during transient molecular processes can be obtained on their intrinsic timescale. In this letter, Free Electron Laser (FEL) radiation is used to measure ultrafast changes in the X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) during the prototypical photoreaction of a spin crossover compound. We reveal its transformation from the ligand-located electronic photoexcitation to the structural trapping of the high spin state. The results require a description beyond a kinetic model and provide a direct observation of a dynamic breathing of the main structural change. The coherent structural oscillations (period of ~265 fs) in the photoproduct potential lose synchrony within ~330 fs, whereas incoherent motions reveal the energy redistribution and vibrational cooling within ~1.6 ps. We foresee that ultrafast X-ray spectroscopies will provide invaluable insight to understand the complex physics of fundamental light induced phenomena, which are of prime interest in a multitude of chemical, physical and biological processes.
