Search

Of the more than $3{,}000$ radio pulsars currently known, only ${\sim}300$ are in binary systems, and only five of these consist of young pulsars with massive non-degenerate companions. We present the discovery and initial timing, accomplished using the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment telescope (CHIME), of the sixth such binary pulsar, PSR J2108+4516, a $0.577$-s radio pulsar in a 269-day orbit of eccentricity 0.09 with a companion of minimum mass $11$ M$_{\odot}$. Notably, the pulsar undergoes periods of substantial eclipse, disappearing from the CHIME $400{-}800$ MHz observing band for a large fraction of its orbit, and displays significant dispersion measure and scattering variations throughout its orbit, pointing to the possibility of a circumstellar disk or very dense stellar wind associated with the companion star. Subarcsecond resolution imaging with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array unambiguously demonstrates that the companion is a bright, $V \simeq 11$ OBe star, EM* UHA 138, located at a distance of $3.26(14)$ kpc. Archival optical observations of \companion{} approximately suggest a companion mass ranging from $17.5$ M$_{\odot} < M_{\rm c} < 23$ M$_{\odot}$, in turn constraining the orbital inclination angle to $50.3^{\circ} \lesssim i \lesssim 58.3^{\circ}$. With further multi-wavelength followup, PSR J2108+4516 promises to serve as another rare laboratory for the exploration of companion winds, circumstellar disks, and short-term evolution through extended-body orbital dynamics., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, accepted by ApJ

We present simultaneous, multi-colour optical light curves of the companion star to the black-widow pulsar PSR J2051-0827, obtained approximately 10 years apart using ULTRACAM and HiPERCAM, respectively. The ULTRACAM light curves confirm the previously reported asymmetry in which the leading hemisphere of the companion star appears to be brighter than the trailing hemisphere. The HiPERCAM light curves, however, do not show this asymmetry, demonstrating that whatever mechanism is responsible for it varies on timescales of a decade or less. We fit the symmetrical HiPERCAM light curves with a direct-heating model to derive the system parameters, finding an orbital inclination of $55.9^{+4.8}_{-4.1}$ degrees, in good agreement with radio-eclipse constraints. We find that approximately half of the pulsar's spin-down energy is converted to optical luminosity, resulting in temperatures ranging from approximately $5150^{+190}_{-190}$ K on the day side to $2750^{+130}_{-150}$ K on the night side of the companion star. The companion star is close to filling its Roche lobe ($f_{\rm RL} =0.88^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$) and has a mass of $0.039^{+0.010}_{-0.011}$ M$_{\odot}$, giving a mean density of $20.24^{+0.59}_{-0.44}$ g cm$^{-3}$ and an apsidal motion constant in the range $0.0036 < k_2 < 0.0047$. Accurate measurements of the masses of neutron stars are necessary to test binary evolution models, and to constrain the neutron star equation of state. In pulsar binaries with no measurable post-Keplerian parameters, this requires an accurate estimate of the binary system's inclination and the radial velocity of the companion star by other means than pulsar timing. In this paper, we present the results of a new method for measuring this radial velocity using the binary synthesis code Icarus. This method relies on constructing a model spectrum of a tidally distorted, irradiated star as viewed for a given binary configuration. This method is applied to optical spectra of the newly discovered black widow PSR J1555-2908. By modelling the optical spectroscopy alongside optical photometry, we find that the radial velocity of the companion star is $397\pm4$ km s$^{-1}$ (errors quoted at 95\% confidence interval), as well as a binary inclination of $>75^{\rm o}$. Combined with $\gamma$-ray pulsation timing information, this gives a neutron star mass of 1.67$^{+0.15}_{-0.09}$ M$_\odot$ and a companion mass of 0.060$^{+0.005}_{-0.003}$ M$_\odot$, placing PSR J1555-2908 at the observed upper limit of what is considered a black widow system., Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. 15 pages, 7 Figures. We report on the simultaneous Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) and Algonquin Radio Observatory (ARO) observations at 550-750 MHz of the scintillation of PSR B1508+55, resulting in a $\sim$10,000-km baseline. This regime of measurement lies between the shorter few 100-1000~km baselines of earlier multi-station observations and the much longer earth-space baselines. We measure a scintillation cross-correlation coefficient of $0.22$, offset from zero time lag due to a $\sim 45$~s traversal time of the scintillation pattern. The scintillation time of 135~s is $3\times$ longer, ruling out isotropic as well as strictly 1D scattering. Hence, the low cross-correlation coefficient is indicative of highly anisotropic but 2D scattering. The common scintillation detected on the baseline is confined to low delays of $\lesssim 1 \mu$s, suggesting that this correlation may not be associated with the parabolic scintillation arc detected at the GMRT. Detection of pulsed echoes and their direct imaging with the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) by a different group enable them to measure a distance of 125~pc to the screen causing these echoes. These previous measurements, alongside our observations, lead us to propose that there are at least two scattering screens: the closer 125 pc screen causing the scintillation arc detected at GMRT, and a screen further beyond causing the scintillation detected on the GMRT-ARO baseline. We advance the hypothesis that the 125-pc screen partially resolves the speckle images on the screen beyond leading to loss of coherence in the scintillation dynamic spectrum, to explain the low cross-correlation coefficient., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Binaries harbouring millisecond pulsars enable a unique path to determine neutron star masses: radio pulsations reveal the motion of the neutron star, while that of the companion can be characterised through studies in the optical range. PSR J1012+5307 is a millisecond pulsar in a 14.5-h orbit with a helium-core white dwarf companion. In this work we present the analysis of an optical spectroscopic campaign, where the companion star absorption features reveal one of the lightest known white dwarfs. We determine a white dwarf radial velocity semi-amplitude of K_2 = 218.9 +- 2.2 km/s, which combined with that of the pulsar derived from the precise radio timing, yields a mass ratio of q=10.44+- 0.11. We also attempt to infer the white dwarf mass from observational constraints using new binary evolution models for extremely low-mass white dwarfs, but find that they cannot reproduce all observed parameters simultaneously. In particular, we cannot reconcile the radius predicted from binary evolution with the measurement from the photometric analysis (R_WD=0.047+-0.003 Rsun). Our limited understanding of extremely low-mass white dwarf evolution, which results from binary interaction, therefore comes as the main factor limiting the precision with which we can measure the mass of the white dwarf in this system. Our conservative white dwarf mass estimate of M_WD = 0.165 +- 0.015 Msun, along with the mass ratio enables us to infer a pulsar mass of M_NS = 1.72 +- 0.16 Msun. This value is clearly above the canonical 1.4 Msun, therefore adding PSR J1012+5307 to the growing list of massive millisecond pulsars., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. The delay time distribution of Type Ia supernovae (the time-dependent rate of supernovae resulting from a burst of star formation) has been measured using different techniques and in different environments. Here, we study in detail the distribution for field galaxies, using the SDSS DR7 Stripe 82 supernova sample. We improve a technique we introduced earlier, which is based on galaxy color and luminosity, and is insensitive to details of the star formation history, to include the normalization. Assuming a power-law dependence of the supernova rate with time, ${\rm DTD}(t)=A(t/{\rm 1\,Gyr})^{s}$, we find a power-law index $s= -1.34 ^{+0.19} _{-0.17}$ and a normalization $\rm{log}\ A= -12.15 ^{+0.10} _{-0.13}\, {\rm dex}(M_\odot ^{-1}\, \rm{yr}^{-1})$, corresponding to a number of type Ia supernovae integrated over a Hubble time of $PE = 0.004^{+0.002} _{-0.001}\, M_\odot ^{-1}$. We also implement a method used by Maoz and collaborators, which is based on star formation history reconstruction, and find that this gives a consistent result for the slope, but a lower, marginally inconsistent normalization. With our normalization, the distribution for field galaxies is made consistent with that derived for cluster galaxies. Comparing the inferred distribution with predictions from different evolutionary scenarios for type Ia supernovae, we find that our results are intermediate between the various predictions and do not yet constraint the evolutionary path leading to SNe~Ia., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

How an otherwise inert carbon-oxygen white dwarf can be made to explode as a Type Ia supernova remains unknown. A promising test of theoretical models is to constrain the distribution of material that is left unburned, in particular of carbon. So far, most investigations used line identification codes to detect carbon in the ejecta, a method that cannot be readily compared against model predictions because it requires assumed opacities and temperatures. Here, we instead use tomographic techniques to investigate the amount of carbon in the inner layers of SN~2011fe, starting from the previously published tomographic analysis of Mazzali et al. From the presence of the carbon feature in the optical at early epochs and its disappearance later on, we derive an average carbon mass fraction between 0.001 and 0.05 for velocities in the range $13500 \lesssim v \lesssim 16000\ \rm{km\ s^{-1}}$, and an upper limit of 0.005 inside that region. Based on our models and the assumed density profile, only small amounts of carbon should be in the neutral state, too little to be responsible for features seen in near-infrared spectra that were previously identified as due to neutral carbon; We discuss possible reasons for this discrepancy. We compare our results against a suite of explosion models, although uncertainties in both the models and our simulations make it difficult to draw definitive conclusions.

PSR J0636+5128 is a millisecond pulsar in one of the most compact pulsar binaries known, with a 96\,min orbital period. The pulsar mass function suggests a very low-mass companion, similar to that seen in so-called "black widow" binaries. Unlike in most of those, however, no radio eclipses by material driven off from the companion were seen leading to the possibility that the companion was a degenerate remnant of a carbon-oxygen white dwarf. We report the discovery of the optical counterpart of its companion in images taken with the Gemini North and Keck~I telescopes. The companion varies between $r=25$ and $r=23$ on the 96\,min orbital period of the binary, caused by irradiation from the pulsar's energetic wind. We modeled the multi-color lightcurve using parallax constraints from pulsar timing and determine a companion mass of $(1.71\pm0.23)\times 10^{-2}\,M_\odot$, a radius of $(7.6\pm1.4)\times 10^{-2}\,R_\odot$, and a mean density of $54\pm26\,{\rm g\,cm}^{-3}$, all for an assumed neutron star mass of $1.4\,M_\odot$. This makes the companion to PSR J0636+5128 one of the densest of the "black widow" systems. We present near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy of the nearby supernova 2014J obtained $\sim$450 d after explosion. We detect the [Ni II] 1.939 $\mu$m line in the spectra indicating the presence of stable $^{58}$Ni in the ejecta. The stable nickel is not centrally concentrated but rather distributed as the iron. The spectra are dominated by forbidden [Fe II] and [Co II] lines. We use lines, in the NIR spectra, arising from the same upper energy levels to place constraints on the extinction from host galaxy dust. We find that that our data are in agreement with the high $A_V$ and low $R_V$ found in earlier studies from data near maximum light. Using a $^{56}$Ni mass prior from near maximum light $\gamma$-ray observations, we find $\sim$0.05 M$_\odot$ of stable nickel to be present in the ejecta. The Astropy project supports and fosters the development of open-source and openly-developed Python packages that provide commonly-needed functionality to the astronomical community. A key element of the Astropy project is the core package Astropy, which serves as the foundation for more specialized projects and packages. In this article, we provide an overview of the organization of the Astropy project and summarize key features in the core package as of the recent major release, version 2.0. We then describe the project infrastructure designed to facilitate and support development for a broader ecosystem of inter-operable packages. Type Ia supernovae are generally agreed to arise from thermonuclear explosions of carbon-oxygen white dwarfs. The actual path to explosion, however, remains elusive, with numerous plausible parent systems and explosion mechanisms suggested. Observationally, type Ia supernovae have multiple subclasses, distinguished by their lightcurves and spectra. This raises the question whether these reflect that multiple mechanisms occur in nature, or instead that explosions have a large but continuous range of physical properties. We revisit the idea that normal and 91bg-like supernovae can be understood as part of a spectral sequence, in which changes in temperature dominate. Specifically, we find that a single ejecta structure is sufficient to provide reasonable fits of both the normal type Ia supernova SN~2011fe and the 91bg-like SN~2005bl, provided that the luminosity and thus temperature of the ejecta are adjusted appropriately. This suggests that the outer layers of the ejecta are similar, thus providing some support of a common explosion mechanism. Our spectral sequence also helps to shed light on the conditions under which carbon can be detected in pre-maximum SN~Ia spectra -- we find that emission from iron can "fill in" the carbon trough in cool SN~Ia. This may indicate that the outer layers of the ejecta of events in which carbon is detected are relatively metal poor compared to events where carbon is not detected.

We observed a nearby millisecond pulsar J2124-3358 with the Hubble Space Telescope in broad far-UV (FUV) and optical filters. The pulsar is detected in both bands with fluxes F(1250-2000 A)= (2.5+/-0.3)x10^-16 erg/s/cm^2 and F(3800-6000 A)=(6.4+/-0.4)x10^-17 erg/s/cm^2, which correspond to luminosities of ~5.8x10^27 and 1.4x10^27 erg/s, for d=410 pc and E(B-V)=0.03. The optical-FUV spectrum can be described by a power-law model, f_nu~nu^alpha, with slope alpha=0.18-0.48 for a conservative range of color excess, E(B-V)=0.01-0.08. Since a spectral flux rising with frequency is unusual for pulsar magnetospheric emission in this frequency range, it is possible that the spectrum is predominantly magnetospheric (power law with alpha<0) in the optical while it is dominated by thermal emission from the neutron star surface in the FUV. For a neutron star radius of 12 km, the surface temperature would be between 0.5x10^5 and 2.1x10^5 K, for alpha ranging from -1 to 0, E(B-V)=0.01-0.08, and d=340-500 pc. In addition to the pulsar, the FUV images reveal extended emission spatially coincident with the known Halpha bow shock, making PSR J2124-3358 the second pulsar (after PSR J0437-4715) with a bow shock detected in FUV., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We present the Chasing the Identification of ASCA Galactic Objects (ChIcAGO) survey, which is designed to identify the unknown X-ray sources discovered during the ASCA Galactic Plane Survey (AGPS). Little is known about most of the AGPS sources, especially those that emit primarily in hard X-rays (2-10 keV) within the F_x ~ 10^-13 to 10^-11 erg cm^-2 s^-1 X-ray flux range. In ChIcAGO, the subarcsecond localization capabilities of Chandra have been combined with a detailed multi-wavelength follow-up program, with the ultimate goal of classifying the >100 unidentified sources in the AGPS. Overall to date, 93 unidentified AGPS sources have been observed with Chandra as part of the ChIcAGO survey. A total of 253 X-ray point sources have been detected in these Chandra observations within 3' of the original ASCA positions. We have identified infrared and optical counterparts to the majority of these sources, using both new observations and catalogs from existing Galactic plane surveys. X-ray and infrared population statistics for the X-ray point sources detected in the Chandra observations reveal that the primary populations of Galactic plane X-ray sources that emit in the F_x ~ 10^-13 to 10^-11 erg cm^-2 s^-1 flux range are active stellar coronae, massive stars with strong stellar winds that are possibly in colliding-wind binaries, X-ray binaries, and magnetars. There is also a fifth population that is still unidentified but, based on its X-ray and infrared properties, likely comprise partly of Galactic sources and partly of active galactic nuclei., Comment: 52 pages, 20 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Gravitationally bound three-body systems have been studied for hundreds of years and are common in our Galaxy. They show complex orbital interactions, which can constrain the compositions, masses, and interior structures of the bodies and test theories of gravity, if sufficiently precise measurements are available. A triple system containing a radio pulsar could provide such measurements, but the only previously known such system, B1620-26 (with a millisecond pulsar, a white dwarf, and a planetary-mass object in an orbit of several decades), shows only weak interactions. Here we report precision timing and multi-wavelength observations of PSR J0337+1715, a millisecond pulsar in a hierarchical triple system with two other stars. Strong gravitational interactions are apparent and provide the masses of the pulsar (1.4378(13) Msun, where Msun is the solar mass and the parentheses contain the uncertainty in the final decimal places) and the two white dwarf companions (0.19751(15) Msun and 0.4101(3) Msun), as well as the inclinations of the orbits (both approximately 39.2 degrees). The unexpectedly coplanar and nearly circular orbits indicate a complex and exotic evolutionary past that differs from those of known stellar systems. The gravitational field of the outer white dwarf strongly accelerates the inner binary containing the neutron star, and the system will thus provide an ideal laboratory in which to test the strong equivalence principle of general relativity., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. In the last few years, over 43 millisecond radio pulsars have been discovered by targeted searches of unidentified gamma-ray sources found by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. A large fraction of these millisecond pulsars are in compact binaries with low-mass companions. These systems often show eclipses of the pulsar signal and are commonly known as black widows and redbacks because the pulsar is gradually destroying its companion. In this paper, we report on the optical discovery of four strongly irradiated millisecond pulsar companions. All four sources show modulations of their color and luminosity at the known orbital periods from radio timing. Light curve modelling of our exploratory data shows that the equilibrium temperature reached on the companion's dayside with respect to their nightside is consistent with about 10-30% of the available spin-down energy from the pulsar being reprocessed to increase the companion's dayside temperature. This value compares well with the range observed in other irradiated pulsar binaries and offers insights about the energetics of the pulsar wind and the production of gamma-ray emission. In addition, this provides a simple way of estimating the brightness of irradiated pulsar companions given the pulsar spin-down luminosity. Our analysis also suggests that two of the four new irradiated pulsar companions are only partially filling their Roche lobe. Some of these sources are relatively bright and represent good targets for spectroscopic follow-up. PSR J1738+0333 is one of the four millisecond pulsars known to be orbited by a white dwarf companion bright enough for optical spectroscopy. Of these, it has the shortest orbital period, making it especially interesting for a range of astrophysical and gravity related questions. We present a spectroscopic and photometric study of the white dwarf companion and infer its radial velocity curve, effective temperature, surface gravity and luminosity. We find that the white dwarf has properties consistent with those of low-mass white dwarfs with thick hydrogen envelopes, and use the corresponding mass-radius relation to infer its mass; M_WD = 0.181 +/- +0.007/-0.005 solar masses. Combined with the mass ratio q=8.1 +/- 0.2 inferred from the radial velocities and the precise pulsar timing ephemeris, the neutron star mass is constrained to M_PSR = 1.47 +/- +0.07/-0.06 solar masses. Contrary to expectations, the latter is only slightly above the Chandrasekhar limit. We find that, even if the birth mass of the neutron star was only 1.20 solar masses, more than 60% of the matter that left the surface of the white dwarf progenitor escaped the system. The accurate determination of the component masses transforms this system in a laboratory for fundamental physics by constraining the orbital decay predicted by general relativity. Currently, the agreement is within 1 sigma of the observed decay. Middle-aged, cooling neutron stars are observed both as relatively rapidly spinning radio pulsars and as more slowly spinning, strongly magnetized isolated neutron stars (INSs), which stand out by their thermal X-ray spectra. The difference between the two classes may be that the INSs initially had much stronger magnetic fields, which decayed. To test this, we used the Chandra X-ray Observatory to observe 1RXS J072559.8-261229, a possible X-ray counterpart to PSR J0726-2612, which, with its 3.44s period and 3e13G inferred magnetic field strength, is the nearest and least extincted among the possible slowly-spinning, strong-field INS progenitors (it likely is in the Gould Belt, at ~1 kpc). We confirm the identification and find that the pulsar has a spectrum consistent with being purely thermal, with blackbody temperature kT=87+/-5 eV and radius R=5.7+2.6-1.3 km at a distance of 1 kpc. We detect sinusoidal pulsations at twice the radio period with a semi-amplitude of 27\pm5%. The properties of PSR J0726-2612 strongly resemble those of the INSs, except for its much shorter characteristic age of 200 kyr (instead of several Myr). We conclude that PSR J0726-2612 is indeed an example of a young INS, one that started with a magnetic field strength on the low end of those inferred for the INSs, and that, therefore, decayed by a relatively small amount. Our results suggest that the long-period, strong-field pulsars and the INSs are members of the same class, and open up new opportunities to understand the puzzling X-ray and optical emission of the INSs through radio observations of PSR J0726-2612., Comment: ApJ, in press. 7 pages, 3 figures, using emulateapj. We present extensive spectral and photometric observations of the recycled pulsar/white-dwarf binary containing PSR J0437-4715, which we analyzed together with archival X-ray and gamma-ray data, to obtain the complete mid-infrared to gamma-ray spectrum. We first fit each part of the spectrum separately, and then the whole multi-wavelength spectrum. We find that the optical-infrared part of the spectrum is well fit by a cool white dwarf atmosphere model with pure hydrogen composition. The model atmosphere (Teff = 3950pm150K, log g=6.98pm0.15, R_WD=(1.9pm0.2)e9 cm) fits our spectral data remarkably well for the known mass and distance (M=0.25pm0.02Msun, d=156.3pm1.3pc), yielding the white dwarf age (tau=6.0pm0.5Gyr). In the UV, we find a spectral shape consistent with thermal emission from the bulk of the neutron star surface, with surface temperature between 1.25e5 and 3.5e5K. The temperature of the thermal spectrum suggests that some heating mechanism operates throughout the life of the neutron star. The temperature distribution on the neutron star surface is non-uniform. In the X-rays, we confirm the presence of a high-energy tail which is consistent with a continuation of the cut-off power-law component (Gamma=1.56pm0.01, Ecut=1.1pm0.2GeV) that is seen in gamma-rays and perhaps even extends to the near-UV., Comment: 23 pages. We present X-ray, infrared, optical and radio observations of four previously unidentified Galactic plane X-ray sources, AX J163252-4746, AX J184738-0156, AX J144701-5919 and AX J144547-5931. Detection of each source with the Chandra X-ray Observatory has provided sub-arcsecond localizations, which we use to identify bright infrared counterparts to all four objects. Infrared and optical spectroscopy of these counterparts demonstrate that all four X-ray sources are extremely massive stars, with spectral classifications Ofpe/WN9 (AX J163252-4746), WN7 (AX J184738-0156 = WR121a), WN7-8h (AX J144701-5919) and OIf+ (AX J144547-5931). AX J163252-4746 and AX J184738-0156 are both luminous, hard, X-ray emitters with strong Fe XXV emission lines in their X-ray spectra at ~6.7 keV. The multi-wavelength properties of AX J163252-4746 and AX J184738-0156 are not consistent with isolated massive stars or accretion onto a compact companion; we conclude that their X-ray emission is most likely generated in a colliding-wind binary system. For both AX J144701-5919 and AX J144547-5931, the X-ray emission is an order of magnitude less luminous and with a softer spectrum. These properties are consistent with a colliding-wind binary interpretation for these two sources also, but other mechanisms for the generation of X-rays cannot be excluded. There are many other as yet unidentified X-ray sources in the Galactic plane, with X-ray properties similar to those seen for AX J163252-4746, AX J184738-0156, AX J144701-5919 and AX J144547-5931. The most massive neutron stars constrain the behavior of ultra-dense matter, with larger masses possible only for increasingly stiff equations of state. Here, we present evidence that the black widow pulsar, PSR B1957+20, has a high mass. We took spectra of its strongly irradiated companion and found an observed radial-velocity amplitude of K_obs=324+/-3 km/s. Correcting this for the fact that, due to the irradiation, the center of light lies inward relative to the center of mass, we infer a true radial-velocity amplitude of K_2=353+/-4 km/s and a mass ratio q=M_PSR/M_2=69.2+/-0.8. Combined with the inclination i=65+/-2 deg inferred from models of the lightcurve, our best-fit pulsar mass is M_PSR=2.40+/-0.12 M_sun. We discuss possible systematic uncertainties, in particular in the lightcurve modeling. Taking an upper limit of i<85 deg based on the absence of radio eclipses at high frequency, combined with a conservative lower-limit to the motion of the center of mass, K_2>343 km/s (q>67.3), we infer a lower limit to the pulsar mass of M_PSR>1.66 M_sun., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ; revision includes more detail on the spectral classification and discussion of other recent high neutron-star masses

SDSS 1257+5428 is a white dwarf in a close orbit with a companion that has been suggested to be a neutron star. If so, it hosts the closest known neutron star, and its existence implies a great abundance of similar systems and a rate of white-dwarf neutron-star mergers similar to that of the type Ia supernova rate. Here, we present high signal-to-noise spectra of SDSS 1257+5428, which confirm an independent finding that the system is in fact composed of two white dwarfs, one relatively cool and with low mass, and the other hotter and more massive. With this, the demographics and merger rate are no longer puzzling (various factors combine to lower the latter by more than two orders of magnitude). We show that the spectra are fit well with a combination of two hydrogen model atmospheres, as long as the lines of the higher-gravity component are broadened significantly relative to what is expected from just pressure broadening. Interpreting this additional broadening as due to rotation, the inferred spin period is short, about 1 minute. Similarly rapid rotation is only seen in accreting white dwarfs that are magnetic; empirically, it appears that in non-magnetized white dwarfs, accreted angular momentum is lost by nova explosions before it can be transferred to the white dwarf. This suggests that the massive white dwarf in SDSS 1257+5428 is magnetic as well, with B~10^5 G. Alternatively, the broadening seen in the spectral lines could be due to a stronger magnetic field, of ~10^6 G. We analyze the X-ray scattering halos around three Galactic Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) in order to constrain the distance and the optical extinction of each source. We obtain surface brightness distributions from EPIC-pn data obtained with XMM-Newton, compare the profiles of different sources, and fit them with a model based on the standard theory of X-ray scattering by dust grains, both for a uniform distribution of dust along the line of sight, and for dust distributions constrained by previous measurements. Somewhat surprisingly, we find that for all three sources, the uniform distribution reproduces the observed surface brightness as well as or better than the distributions that are informed by previous constraints. Nevertheless, the inferred total dust columns are robust, and serve to confirm that previous measurements based on interstellar edges in high-resolution X-ray spectra and on modelling of broad-band X-ray spectra were reliable. Specifically, we find Av ~= 4, 6, and 8 mag for 4U 0142+61, 1E 1048.1-5937, and 1RXS J170849.0-400910, respectively. For 1E 1048.1-5937, this is well in excess of the extinction expected towards a HI bubble along the line of sight, thus casting further doubt on the suggested association with the source., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The nearby isolated neutron stars are a group of seven relatively slowly rotating neutron stars that show thermal X-ray spectra, most with broad absorption features. They are interesting both because they may allow one to determine fundamental neutron-star properties by modeling their spectra, and because they appear to be a large fraction of the overall neutron-star population. Here, we describe a series of XMM-Newton observations of the nearby isolated neutron star RX J0806.4-4123, taken as part of larger program of timing studies. From these, we limit the spin-down rate to dnu/dt=(-4.3+/-2.3)*10^{-16} Hz/s. This constrains the dipole magnetic field to be <3.7e13 G at 2sigma, significantly less than the field of 1e14 G implied by simple models for the X-ray absorption found at 0.45 keV. We confirm that the spectrum is thermal and stable (to within a few percent), but find that the 0.45 keV absorption feature is broader and more complex than previously thought. Considering the population of isolated neutron stars, we find that magnetic field decay from an initial field of 3e14 G accounts most naturally for their timing and spectral properties, both qualitatively and in the context of the models for field decay of Pons and collaborators., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. The cores of neutron stars harbor the highest matter densities known to occur in nature, up to several times the densities in atomic nuclei. Similarly, magnetic field strengths can exceed the strongest fields generated in terrestrial laboratories by ten orders of magnitude. Hyperon-dominated matter, deconfined quark matter, superfluidity, even superconductivity are predicted in neutron stars. Similarly, quantum electrodynamics predicts that in strong magnetic fields the vacuum becomes birefringent. The properties of matter under such conditions is governed by Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and Quantum Electrodynamics (QED), and the close study of the properties of neutron stars offers the unique opportunity to test and explore the richness of QCD and QED in a regime that is utterly beyond the reach of terrestrial experiments. We present optical time series spectroscopy of the pulsating white dwarf star G29-38 taken at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). By measuring the variations in brightness, Doppler shift, and line shape of each spectrum, we explore the physics of pulsation and measure the spherical degree ($\ell$) of each stellar pulsation mode. We measure the physical motion of the g-modes correlated with the brightness variations for three of the eight pulsation modes in this data set. The varying line shape reveals the spherical degree of the pulsations, an important quantity for properly modeling the interior of the star with asteroseismology. Performing fits to the H$\beta$, H$\gamma$, and H$\delta$ lines, we quantify the changing shape of the line and compare them to models and previous time series spectroscopy of G~29-38. These VLT data confirm several $\ell$ identifications and add four new values, including an additional $\ell$=2 and a possible $\ell$=4. RX J1856.5-3754 is the X-ray brightest among the nearby isolated neutron stars. Its X-ray spectrum is thermal, and is reproduced remarkably well by a black-body, but its interpretation has remained puzzling. One reason is that the source did not exhibit pulsations, and hence a magnetic field strength--vital input to atmosphere models--could not be estimated. Recently, however, very weak pulsations were discovered. Here, we analyze these in detail, using all available data from the XMM-Newton and Chandra X-ray observatories. From frequency measurements, we set a 2-sigma upper limit to the frequency derivative of \dot\nu<1.3e-14 Hz/s. Trying possible phase-connected timing solutions, we find that one solution is far more likely than the others, and we infer a most probable value of \dot\nu=(-5.98+/-0.14)e-16 Hz/s. The inferred magnetic field strength is 1.5e13 G, comparable to what was found for similar neutron stars. From models, the field seems too strong to be consistent with the absence of spectral features for non-condensed atmospheres. It is sufficiently strong, however, that the surface could be condensed, but only if it is consists of heavy elements like iron. Our measurements imply a characteristic age of about 4 Myr. This is longer than the cooling and kinematic ages, as was found for similar objects, but at almost a factor ten, the discrepancy is more extreme. A puzzle raised by our measurement is that the implied rotational energy loss rate of about 3e30 erg/s is orders of magnitude smaller than what was inferred from the H-alpha nebula surrounding the source., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables; accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal (Letters)

We present the results of a spectroscopic monitoring campaign of the OB-star companions to the eclipsing X-ray pulsars SMC X-1, LMC X-4 and Cen X-3. High-resolution optical spectra obtained with UVES on the ESO Very Large Telescope are used to determine the radial-velocity orbit of the OB (super)giants with high precision. The excellent quality of the spectra provides the opportunity to measure the radial-velocity curve based on individual lines, and to study the effect of possible distortions of the line profiles due to e.g. X-ray heating on the derived radial-velocity amplitude. Several spectral lines show intrinsic variations with orbital phase. The magnitude of these variations depends on line strength, and thus provides a criterion to select lines that do not suffer from distortions. The undistorted lines show a larger radial-velocity amplitude than the distorted lines, consistent with model predictions. Application of our line-selection criteria results in a mean radial-velocity amplitude K(Opt) of 20.2 +/- 1.1, 35.1 +/- 1.5, and 27.5 +/- 2.3 km/s (1 sigma errors), for the OB companion to SMC X-1, LMC X-4 and Cen X-3, respectively. Adding information on the projected rotational velocity of the OB companion (derived from our spectra), the duration of X-ray eclipse and orbital parameters of the X-ray pulsar (obtained from literature), we arrive at a neutron star mass of 1.06^{+0.11}_{-0.10}, 1.25^{+0.11}_{-0.10} and 1.34^{+0.16}_{-0.14} M{sun} for SMC X-1, LMC X-4 and Cen X-3, respectively. The mass of SMC X-1 is near the minimum mass (~1 M{sun}) expected for a neutron star produced in a supernova. We have observed the 5.54s anomalous X-ray pulsar XTE J1810-197 at radio, millimeter, and infrared (IR) wavelengths, with the aim of learning about its broad-band spectrum. At the IRAM 30m telescope, we have detected the magnetar at 88 and 144GHz, the highest radio-frequency emission ever seen from a pulsar. At 88GHz we detected numerous individual pulses, with typical widths ~2ms and peak flux densities up to 45Jy. Together with nearly contemporaneous observations with the Parkes, Nancay, and Green Bank telescopes, we find that in late 2006 July the spectral index of the pulsar was -0.5

We have obtained observations of the magnetar XTE J1810-197 with the Very Long Baseline Array at two epochs separated by 106 days, at wavelengths of 6 cm and 3.6 cm. Comparison of the positions yields a proper motion value of 13.5+-1.0 mas/yr at an equatorial position angle of 209.4+-2.4 deg (east of north). This value is consistent with a lower-significance proper motion value derived from infrared observations of the source over the past three years, also reported here. Given its distance of 3.5+-0.5 kpc, the implied transverse velocity corrected to the local standard of rest is 212+-35 km/s (1 sigma). The measured velocity is slightly below the average for normal young neutron stars, indicating that the mechanism(s) of magnetar birth need not lead to high neutron star velocities. We also use Australia Telescope Compact Array, Very Large Array, and these VLBA observations to set limits on any diffuse emission associated with the source on a variety of spatial scales, concluding that the radio emission from XTE J1810-197 is >96% pulsed., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. We have used a set of dedicated astrometric data from the Hubble Space Telescope to measure the parallax and proper motion of the nearby neutron star RX J0720.4-3125. At each of eight epochs over two years, we used the High Resolution Camera of the Advanced Camera for Surveys to measure the position of the B=26.6 target to a precision of ~2 mas (~0.07 pix) relative to 22 other stars. From these data we measure a parallax of pi=2.8+/-0.9 mas (for a distance of 360+170-90 pc) and a proper motion of mu=107.8+/-1.2 mas/yr. Exhaustive testing of every stage of our analysis suggests that it is robust, with a maximum systematic uncertainty on the parallax of 0.4 mas. The distance is compatible with earlier estimates made from scaling the optical emission of RX J0720.4-3125 relative to the even closer neutron star RX J1856.5-3754. The distance and proper motion imply a transverse velocity of 180+90-40 km/s, comparable to velocities observed for radio pulsars. The speed and direction suggest an origin for RX J0720.4-3125 in the Trumpler 10 OB association ~0.7 Myr ago, with a possible range of 0.5-1.0 Myr given by the uncertainty in the distance., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures. We present timing measurements, astrometry, and high-resolution spectra of a number of nearby, thermally emitting, isolated neutron stars. We use these to infer magnetic field strengths and distances, but also encounter a number of puzzles. We discuss three specific ones in detail: (i) For RX J0720.4-3125 and RX J1308.6+2127, the characteristic ages are in excess of 1~Myr, while their temperatures and kinematic ages indicate that they are much younger; (ii) For RX J1856.5-3754, the brightness temperature for the optical emission is in excess of that measured at X-ray wavelengths for reasonable neutron-star radii; (iii) For RX J0720.4-3125, the spectrum changed from an initially featureless state to one with an absorption feature, yet there was only a relatively small change in effective temperature. Furthermore, we attempt to see whether the spectra of all seven sourced, in six of which absorption features have now been found, can be understood in the context of strongly magnetised hydrogen atmospheres. We present spectroscopic and photometric observations of the optical counterpart to PSR J1911-5958A, a millisecond pulsar located towards the globular cluster NGC 6752. We measure radial velocities from the spectra and determine the systemic radial velocity of the binary and the radial-velocity amplitude of the white-dwarf orbit. Combined with the pulsar orbit obtained from radio timing, we infer a mass ratio of Mpsr/Mwd=7.36+-0.25. The spectrum of the counterpart is that of a hydrogen atmosphere, showing Balmer absorption lines upto H12, and we identify the counterpart as a helium-core white dwarf of spectral type DA5. Comparison of the spectra with hydrogen atmosphere models yield a temperature Teff=10090+-150 K and a surface gravity log g=6.44+-0.20 cm s^-2. Using mass-radius relations appropriate for low-mass helium-core white dwarfs, we infer the white-dwarf mass Mwd=0.18+-0.02 Msun and radius Rwd=0.043+-0.009 Rsun. Combined with the mass ratio, this constrains the pulsar mass to Mpsr=1.40^+0.16_-0.10 Msun. If we instead use the white-dwarf spectrum and the distance of NGC 6752 to determine the white-dwarf radius, we find Rwd=0.058+-0.004 Rsun. For the observed temperature, the mass-radius relations predict a white-dwarf mass of Mwd=0.175+-0.010 Msun, constraining the pulsar mass to Mpsr=1.34+-0.08 Msun. We find that the white-dwarf radius determined from the spectrum and the systemic radial velocity of the binary are only marginally consistent with the values that are expected if PSR J1911-5958A is associated with NGC 6752. We discuss possible causes to explain this inconsistency, but conclude that our observations do not conclusively confirm nor disprove the assocation of the pulsar binary with the globular cluster., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. We report the detection of probable optical counterparts for two Intermediate Mass Binary Pulsar (IMBP) systems, PSR J1528-3146 and PSR J1757-5322. Recent radio pulsar surveys have uncovered a handful of these systems with putative massive white dwarf companions, thought to have an evolutionary history different from that of the more numerous class of Low Mass Binary Pulsars (LMBPs) with He white dwarf companions. The study of IMBP companions via optical observations offers us several new diagnostics: the evolution of main sequence stars near the white-dwarf-neutron star boundary, the physics of white dwarfs close to the Chandrasekhar limit, and insights into the recycling process by which old pulsars are spun up to high rotation frequencies. We were unsuccessful in our attempt to detect optical counterparts of PSR J1141-6545, PSR J1157-5112, PSR J1435-6100, and PSR J1454-5846., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We present optical and near-infrared observations with Keck of the binary millisecond pulsar PSR J0751+1807. We detect a faint, red object - with R=25.08+-0.07, B-R=2.5+-0.3, and R-I=0.90+-0.10 - at the celestial position of the pulsar and argue that it is the white dwarf companion of the pulsar. The colours are the reddest among all known white dwarfs, and indicate a very low temperature, Teff~4000 K. This implies that the white dwarf cannot have the relatively thick hydrogen envelope that is expected on evolutionary grounds. Our observations pose two puzzles. First, while the atmosphere was expected to be pure hydrogen, the colours are inconsistent with this composition. Second, given the low temperature, irradiation by the pulsar should be important, but we see no evidence for it. We present a phase-connected timing solution for the nearby isolated neutron star RX J1308.6+2127 (RBS 1223). From dedicated Chandra observations as well as archival Chandra and XMM-Newton data spanning a period of five years, we demonstrate that the 10.31-sec pulsations are slowing down steadily at a rate of Pdot=1.120(3)e-13 s/s. Under the assumption that this is due to magnetic dipole torques, we infer a characteristic age of 1.5 Myr and a magnetic field strength of 3.4e13 G. As with RX J0720.4-3125, the only other radio-quiet thermally emitting isolated neutron star for which a timing solution has been derived, the field strength is consistent with what was inferred earlier from the presence of a strong absorption feature in its X-ray spectrum. Furthermore, both sources share that the characteristic age is in excess of the cooling age inferred from standard cooling models. The sources differ, however, in their timing noise: while RX J0720.4-3125 showed considerable timing noise, RX J1308.6+2127 appears relatively stable., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. ApJL in press

We present high-speed, multi-colour optical photometry of the anomalous X-ray pulsar 4U 0142+61, obtained with ULTRACAM on the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope. We detect 4U 0142+61 at magnitudes of i'=23.7+-0.1, g'=27.2+-0.2 and u'>25.8, consistent with the magnitudes found by Hulleman et al.(2004) and hence confirming their discovery of both a spectral break in the optical and a lack of long-term optical variability. We also confirm the discovery of Kern & Martin (2002) that 4U 0142+61 shows optical pulsations with an identical period (~8.7 s) to the X-ray pulsations. The rms pulsed fraction in our data is 29+-8%, 5-7 times greater than the 0.2-8 keV X-ray rms pulsed fraction. The optical and X-ray pulse profiles show similar morphologies and appear to be approximately in phase with each other, the former lagging the latter by only 0.04+-0.02 cycles. In conjunction with the constraints imposed by X-ray observations, the results presented here favour a magnetar interpretation for the anomalous X-ray pulsars., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the results of a dedicated effort to measure the spin-down rate of the nearby isolated neutron star RX J0720.4-3125. Comparing arrival times of the 8.39-sec pulsations for data from Chandra we derive an unambiguous timing solution for RX J0720.4-3125 that is accurate to <0.1 cycles over >5 years. Adding data from XMM and ROSAT, the final solution yields Pdot=(6.98+/-0.02)x10^(-14) s/s; for dipole spin-down, this implies a characteristic age of 2 Myr and a magnetic field strength of 2.4e13 G. The phase residuals are somewhat larger than those for purely regular spin-down, but do not show conclusive evidence for higher-order terms or a glitch. From our timing solution as well as recent X-ray spectroscopy, we concur with recent suggestions that RX J0720.4-3125 is most likely an off-beam radio pulsar with a moderately high magnetic field., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure. We present optical and infrared observations taken with the Very Large Telescope of the eclipsing binary pulsar system PSR B1718-19. The candidate companion of the pulsar, identified earlier in Hubble Space Telescope observations, has been detected in all three bands, R, I, and J. These detections allowed us to derive constraints on temperature, radius, and mass, pointing to a companion that has expanded to a radius between one of a main sequence star and one at the Roche-limit. We focus on the role of tidal circularisation in the system, which will have transformed the initially eccentric orbit expected from formation scenarios into the nearly circular orbit presently observed. Based on simple energy balance arguments, we are able to draw a picture of the companion's evolution resulting from the energy deposition in the star due to circularisation. In this picture, our measurement of the companion's parameters is consistent with the expected initial eccentricity. However, with the present understanding of tidal dissipation it remains difficult to account for the short time in which the system was circularised., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present the results of a monitoring campaign of three eclipsing high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs: SMC X-1, LMC X-4 and Cen X-3). High-resolution VLT/UVES spectra are used to measure the radial velocities of these systems with high accuracy. We present the results of a near-infrared monitoring program of the Anomalous X-ray Pulsar 1E 2259+586, performed at the Gemini Observatory. This program began three days after the pulsar's 2002 June outburst, and spans ~1.5 years. We find that after an initial increase associated with the outburst, the near-infrared flux decreased continually and reached the pre-burst quiescent level after about one year. We compare both the near-infrared flux enhancement and its decay to those of the X-ray afterglow, and find them to be remarkably consistent. Fitting simple power laws to the RXTE pulsed flux and near-infrared data for t>1 day post-burst, we find the following decay indices: alpha=-0.21+/-0.01 (X-ray), alpha=-0.21+/-0.02 (near-infrared), where flux is a function of time such that F is proportional to t^alpha. This suggests that the enhanced infrared and X-ray fluxes have a physical link post-outburst, most likely from the neutron-star magnetosphere., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in ApJL; minor wording changes, added observation program IDs, improved figure resolution

Optical observations of the companions of pulsars can help determine the properties of the binaries, as well as those of their components, and give clues to the preceding evolution. In this review, we first describe the different classes of binary pulsars, and present a table with a summary what is known about their optical counterparts. Next, we focus on the class of pulsars that have low-mass, helium-core white dwarf companions. We discuss attempts to determine the masses of both components using optical spectroscopy, and compare the pulsar spin-down ages with cooling ages of the white dwarfs. We confirm that for a given age, the lowest-mass white dwarfs are much hotter than the more massive ones, consistent with recent evolutionary models, although with one glaring exception. We discuss the case of PSR B0820+02, where the cooling age indicates a braking index less than 3, and conclude by describing how cooling ages can be used to test formation scenarios for PSR J1911-5958A, a pulsar binary in the outskirts of NGC 6752., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures, and a big table with a summary of optical information on all binary pulsars outside globular clusters. The pulsating white dwarf star PY Vul (G~185-32) exhibits pulsation modes with peculiar properties that set it apart from other variable stars in the ZZ Ceti (DAV) class. These peculiarities include a low total pulsation amplitude, a mode with bizarre amplitudes in the ultraviolet, and a mode harmonic that exceeds the amplitude of its fundamental. Here, we present optical, time series spectroscopy of PY Vul acquired with the Keck II LRIS spectrograph. Our analysis has revealed that the mode with unusual UV amplitudes also has distinguishing characteristics in the optical. Comparison of its line profile variations to models suggests that this mode has a spherical degree of four. We show that all the other peculiarities in this star are accounted for by a dominant pulsation mode of l=4, and propose this hypothesis as a solution to the mysteries of PY Vul., Comment: 30 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

I review attempts made to determine the properties of neutron stars. I focus on constraints on the maximum mass that a neutron star can have, and on attempts to measure neutron-star radii. So far, there appears to be only one neutron star for which there is strong evidence that its mass is above the canonical 1.4 Msun, viz., Vela X-1, for which a mass close to 1.9 Msun is found. Prospects for progress appear brightest for studies of systems in which the neutron star should have accreted substantial amounts of matter. While for individual systems the evidence that neutron stars can have high masses is weak, the ensemble appears to show that masses around 1.6 Msun are possible. For the radius determination, most attempts have focussed on neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries in which accretion has temporarily shut down. These neutron stars are easiest to model, since they should have pure Hydrogen atmospheres and low magnetic fields. We present X-ray spectra taken with XMM-Newton of RX J1605.3+3249, the third brightest in the class of nearby, thermally emitting neutron stars. In contrast to what is the case for the brightest object, RX J1856.5-3754, we find that the spectrum of RX J1605.3+3249 cannot be described well by a pure black body, but shows a broad absorption feature at 27\AA (0.45 keV). With this, it joins the handful of isolated neutron stars for which spectral features arising from the surface have been detected. We discuss possible mechanisms that might lead to the features, as well as the overall optical to X-ray spectral energy distribution, and compare the spectrum with what is observed for the other nearby, thermally emitting neutron stars. We conclude that we may be observing absorption due to the proton cyclotron line, as was suggested for the other sources, but weakened due to the strong-field quantum electrodynamics effect of vacuum resonance mode conversion., Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the discovery of PSR J1909-3744, a 2.95 millisecond pulsar in a nearly circular 1.53 day orbit. Its narrow pulse width of 43 microseconds allows pulse arrival times to be determined with great accuracy. We have spectroscopically identified the companion as a moderately hot (T = 8500 K) white dwarf with strong absorption lines. Radial velocity measurements of the companion will yield the mass ratio of the system. Our timing data suggest the presence of Shapiro delay; we expect that further timing observations, combined with the mass ratio, will allow the first accurate determination of a millisecond pulsar mass. We have measured the timing parallax and proper motion for this pulsar which indicate a transverse velocity of 140 (+80/-40) km/s. This pulsar's stunningly narrow pulse profile makes it an excellent candidate for precision timing experiments that attempt to detect low frequency gravitational waves from coalescing supermassive black hole binaries., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures. I describe recent high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of surface emission from nearby, thermally emitting neutron stars. I focus on RX J0720.4-3125, RX J1308.6+2127, and RX J1605.3+3249, all of which have similar temperature, but differ in the presence and strength of absorption features in their spectra. I discuss possible causes for the absorption we see in two sources, and conclude that it may be proton cyclotron line absorption, but weakened due to the strong-field quantum electrodynamics effect of vacuum resonance mode conversion., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. We report on the identification of the optical counterpart of the binary millisecond pulsar PSR J1911-5958A, located in the outskirts of the globular cluster NGC 6752. At the position of the pulsar we find an object with V=22.08, B-V=0.38, U-B=-0.49. The object is blue with respect to the cluster main sequence by 0.8 magnitudes in B-V. We argue that the object is the white dwarf companion of the pulsar. Comparison with white dwarf cooling models shows that this magnitude and colors are consistent with a low-mass white dwarf at the distance of NGC 6752. If associated with NGC 6752, the white dwarf is relatively young, <2 Gyr, which sets constraints on the formation of the binary and its ejection from the core of the globular cluster., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters (September 1st, 2003)

We have re-analysed all available high-resolution ultraviolet IUE spectra of the high-mass X-ray binary HD153919/4U1700-37. The radial velocity semi-amplitude of 20.6 +/- 1.0 km/s and orbital eccentricity of 0.22 +/- 0.04 agree very well with the values obtained earlier from optical spectra. They disagree with earlier conclusions for the same data reduced by Heap & Corcoran (1992) and by Stickland & Lloyd (1993)., Comment: 6 pages, latex, figure included, Astronomy & Astrophysics, in press

We present the analysis of time-resolved, high resolution spectra of the cool white dwarf pulsator, G29-38. From measuring the Doppler shifts of the H-alpha core, we detect velocity changes as large as 16.5 km/s and conclude that they are due to the horizontal motions associated with the g-mode pulsations on the star. We detect seven pulsation modes from the velocity time-series and identify the same modes in the flux variations. We discuss the properties of these modes and use the advantage of having both velocity and flux measurements of the pulsations to test the convective driving theory proposed for DAV stars. Our data show limited agreement with the expected relationships between the amplitude and phases of the velocity and flux modes. Unexpectedly, the velocity curve shows evidence for harmonic distortion, in the form of a peak in the Fourier transform whose frequency is the exact sum of the two largest frequencies. Combination frequencies are a characteristic feature of the Fourier transforms of light curves of G29-38, but before now have not been detected in the velocities, nor does published theory predict that they should exist. We compare our velocity combination frequency to combination frequencies found in the analysis of light curves of G29-38, and discuss what might account for the existence of velocity combinations with the properties we observe. We also use our high-resolution spectra to determine if either rotation or pulsation can explain the truncated shape observed for the DAV star's line core. We are able to eliminate both mechanisms: the average spectrum does not fit the rotationally broadened model and the time-series of spectra provides proof that the pulsations do not significantly truncate the line., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ (June)

We report on Keck optical BVRI images and spectroscopy of the companion of the binary millisecond pulsar PSR J0218+4232. A faint bluish (V=24.2, B-V=0.25) counterpart is observed at the pulsar location. Spectra of this counterpart reveal Balmer lines which confirm that the companion is a Helium-core white dwarf. We find that the white dwarf has a temperature of Teff=8060+-150 K. Unfortunately, the spectra are of insufficient quality to put a strong constraint on the surface gravity, although the best fit is for low log g and hence low mass (~0.2 Msun), as expected. We compare predicted white dwarf cooling ages with the characteristic age of the pulsar and find similar values for white dwarf masses of 0.19 to 0.3 Msun. These masses would imply a distance of 2.5 to 4 kpc to the system. The spectroscopic observations also enable us to estimate the mass ratio between the white dwarf and the pulsar. We find q=7.5+-2.4, which is consistent with the current knowledge of white dwarf companions to millisecond pulsars., Comment: 9 pages and 4 figures.
