1. Pandemic lessons for future nursing shortage: A prospective cohort study of nurses' work engagement before and during 16 months of COVID-19

Abstract

Aim. To measure how nurses’ work engagement developed during the first three COVID-19 waves and to compare this with the data collected just before the outbreak. Background. The shortage of nurses is a threat to population health. COVID-19 posed nurses with personal and professional challenges that affected their work engagement. Insights into how the pandemic affected their work engagement may help hospitals retain and recruit nurses in the future. Methods. A single centre prospective survey study was conducted using the UWES-9. Results. In total, 1,697 nurses (90.5% female, mean age 41 years) completed four assessments. Each assessment showed a significant decrease in work engagement compared with that before COVID-19. Work engagement stabilized in the last two assessments. Conclusion. Work engagement decreased significantly compared with that in March 2020, just before the outbreak. Although the decrease stabilized from the 8th month to the 16th month, it did not return to pre-COVID-19 levels. Whether this stabilization was the beginning of a recovery in work engagement or reflected a permanent decline needs to be established. Implications for nursing management. Nurse leaders should facilitate nurses’ self-regulation processes and encourage them to develop resources in order to maintain work engagement at a high level.

3. The MediaMill TRECVID 2006 semantic video search engine

Abstract

In this paper we describe our TRECVID 2006 experiments. The MediaMill team participated in two tasks: concept detection and search. For concept detection we use the MediaMill Challenge as experimental platform. The MediaMill Challenge divides the generic video indexing problem into a visual-only, textual-only, early fusion, late fusion, and combined analysis experiment. We provide a baseline implementation for each experiment together with baseline results, which we made available for the TRECVID community. The Challenge package was downloaded more than 80 times and we anticipate that it has been used by several teams for their 2006 submission. Our Challenge experiments focus specifically on visual-only analysis of video (run id: B\_MM). We extract image features, on global, regional, and keypoint level, which we combine with various supervised learners. A late fusion approach of visual-only analysis methods using geometric mean was our most successful run. With this run we conquer the Challenge baseline by more than 50\%. Our concept detection experiments have resulted in the best score for three concepts: i.e. \emph{desert}, \emph{flag us}, and \emph{charts}. What is more, using LSCOM annotations, our visual-only approach generalizes well to a set of 491 concept detectors. To handle such a large thesaurus in retrieval, an engine is developed which automatically selects a set of relevant concept detectors based on text matching and ontology querying. The suggestion engine is evaluated as part of the automatic search task (run id: A-MM) and forms the entry point for our interactive search experiments (run id: A-MM). Here we experiment with query by object matching and two browsers for interactive exploration: the CrossBrowser and the novel NovaBrowser. It was found that the NovaBrowser is able to produce the same results as the CrossBrowser, but with less user interaction. Similar to previous years our best interactive search runs yield top performance, ranking 2nd and 6th overall. Again a lot has been learned during this year's TRECVID campaign, we highlight the most important lessons at the end of this paper.

Abstract

Audiovisual material is a vital component of the world's heritage but it remains diffi cult to access. With the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision as one of its partners, the MuNCH project aims to investigate new methods for improving access to a wide range of audiovisual documents. MuNCH brings together three research fi elds: multimedia analysis, language technology and semantic technologies. Within the MuNCH project, we have investigated several combinations of these fi elds. We have compared text matching, ontology querying, and semantic visual querying as methods to translate a multimedia query to the vocabulary of the retrieval system. In addition, we have investigated how users make such a translation, and have used this as a benchmark to create automatic methods. We have used multimedia technology to automatically detect objects and scenes as they occur in video, and made use of language technology to exploit automatic transcriptions of speech. We have enriched the Sound and Vision thesaurus that is used to annotate the TV programmes in order to provide a user with a wider range of search results. In order to verify the results of the project against real user needs, MuNCH has participated in the creation of a logging system which monitors the usage of the Sound and Vision catalogue system. Insights in the needs of real users will be used as input for all three of MuNCH's research strands. © Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining 2009.

Abstract

As phytochemicals have the potential to counteract adverse effects of carcinogens we investigated the influence of the flavonoids quercetin and kaempferol on benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) mediated effects on human colon cancer cells, Caco-2. We focused on concerted effects on the expression of AhR and Nrf2 pathway components. In contrast to kaempferol, BaP and quercetin efficiently induced CYP1A1, CYP1A2 and CYP1B1-mRNA in Caco-2 cells. BaP not only acted via AhR activation but sustainably also by increasing AhR and by down-regulating AhRR mRNA. The flavonoids did not affect AhR expression but counteracted the BaP mediated AhRR repression. Only quercetin was found to induce AhRR mRNA. ARNT mRNA appeared to be slightly but significantly down-regulated by BaP as well as by flavonoids while expression of AIP was not or only slightly modulated. The Nrf2 pathway was activated by BaP and by the flavonoids shown by induction of Nrf2 and several of its target genes such as NQO1, GSTP1, GSTA1 and GCLC. Induction effects of 10 μm BaP on Nrf2, GSTP1 and NQO1 were abolished by the flavonoids. In summary, we show that quercetin supports AhR mediated effects. Both flavonoids, however, may counteract the effects of BaP on expression of AhR, AhRR, Nrf2, GSTP1 and NQO1. In conclusion, quercetin appears to have two faces, a flavonoid-like one and a PAH-like one which supports Ahr-mediated effects while kaempferol acts "just like a flavonoid".
