Scatterplots of biological datasets often have no‐data zones, which suggest constraint or promotion of dependent variables. Although methods exist to estimate boundary lines—that is, to fit lines to the edges of scatters of data points—there are, to our knowledge, none available to assess the significance of the areal extents of no‐data zones. Accordingly, we propose a flexible boundary line definition paired with a permutation test of the magnitude of no‐data zones—rather than testing the shape or slope of the line as current methods do. Our proposed permutation test can be used with any method of defining a boundary line. We demonstrate our approach with empirical datasets, find no‐data zones that methods such as quantile regressions fail to detect, and discuss how our approach can quantify constraint and promotion relationships that are not always apparent with other statistics. Premise: Increases in genome size in plants—often associated with larger, low‐density stomata and greater water‐use efficiency (WUE)—could affect plant ecophysiological and hydraulic function. Variation in plant genome size is often due to polyploidy, having occurred repeatedly in the austral sedge genus Schoenus in the Cape Floristic Region (CFR), while species in the other major schoenoid genus in the region, Tetraria, have smaller genomes. Comparing these genera is useful as they co‐occur at the landscape level, under broadly similar bioclimatic conditions. We hypothesized that CFR Schoenus have greater WUE, with lower maximum stomatal conductance (gwmax) imposed by larger, less‐dense stomata. Methods: We investigated relationships between genome size and stomatal parameters in a phylogenetic context, reconstructing a phylogeny of CFR‐occurring Schoeneae (Cyperaceae). Species' stomatal and functional traits were measured from field‐collected and herbarium specimens. Carbon stable isotopes were used as an index of WUE. Genome size was derived from flow‐cytometric measurements of leafy shoots. Results: Evolutionary regressions demonstrated that stomatal size and density covary with genome size, positively and negatively, respectively, with genome size explaining 72–75% of the variation in stomatal size. Larger‐genomed species had lower gwmax and C:N ratios, particularly in culms. Conclusions: We interpret differences in vegetative physiology between the genera as evidence of more‐conservative strategies in CFR Schoenus compared to the more‐acquisitive Tetraria. Because Schoenus have smaller, reduced leaves, they likely rely more on culm photosynthesis than Tetraria. Across the CFR Schoeneae, ecophysiology correlates with genome size, but confounding sources of trait variation limit inferences about causal relationships between traits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Macrotermes termite mounds in the Kruger National Park occupy a significant part of the savanna landscapes, occurring at densities of up to 70 km−2 and often exceeding 10 m in width and 4 m in height. The mounds are usually devoid of trees, but have dense grass cover in wet years. As a result, these mounds form large patches of grassland amongst the wooded savanna. To our knowledge, it is not known why trees are largely excluded from the mounds. We analysed soil surface nutrient concentrations on and off mounds (0–2 cm deep, n = 80) to ascertain whether the availability of nutrients could be influencing competition between grasses and tree seedlings. The results showed that potential deficiencies in P, Ca, Cu, Zn and B in soils off the mounds are likely to be constraining plant growth. Notably, only B, with an average concentration of 0.19 mg kg−1, was likely to be limiting plant growth on the mounds. Notwithstanding likely interactions with herbivory and fire, we hypothesise that because grasses are far less susceptible to deficiencies of B than dicotyledonous trees, it is likely that grass competition with tree seedlings is considerably greater on mounds than off mounds. Aim: Given the importance of environmental heterogeneity as a driver of species richness through its effects on species diversification and coexistence, we asked whether the dramatic difference in species richness per unit area between two similar Mediterranean‐type biodiversity hotspots is explained by differences in environmental heterogeneity. Location: The Greater Cape Floristic Region, South Africa (GCFR) and Southwest Australian Floristic Region (SWAFR). Taxon: Vascular plants (tracheophytes). Methods: Comparable, geospatially explicit environmental and species occurrence data were obtained for both regions and used to generate environmental heterogeneity and species richness raster layers. Heterogeneity in multiple environmental variables and species richness per unit area were compared between the two regions at a range of spatial scales. At each scale, richness was also regressed against these individual axes and against a major axis of heterogeneity, derived by principal component analysis (PCA). Results: The GCFR is generally more environmentally heterogeneous and species‐rich than the SWAFR. Species richness per unit area is significantly related to the major axis of heterogeneity across both regions, the latter describing c. 38%–50% of overall heterogeneity, the slope of this relationship differing between the two regions only at the finest spatial scale. Multivariate regressions, and regressions against the first axes of the PCAs (PC1), revealed variations in the dependence of species richness on environmental heterogeneity between the two regions. Main conclusions: Notwithstanding some region‐specific effects, we present evidence of a common positive relationship between floristic richness and environmental heterogeneity across the GCFR and SWAFR. This is dependent on spatial scale, being strongest at the coarsest level of sampling. The generally greater richness per unit area of the GCFR compared to the SWAFR is thus explained by the former's generally greater environmental heterogeneity and is concordant with its greater levels of floristic turnover.
