This report, the sixth in the Driving Health study, presents findings from an online national survey of Australian truck drivers in order to:1. Characterise the physical and mental health of Australian truck drivers.2. Identify the work, personal, social, environmental, regulatory and health determinants that influence health outcomes and driving performance.3. Determine whether there are differences in the determinants of health and performance between long-haul and short-haul drivers, and between employee drivers and owner drivers.

This report, the eighth in the Driving Health study, presents findings from in depth telephone survey of Australian truck drivers in order to: 1. Gather detailed information on the prevalence of risk factors for drivers in the personal, occupational, workplace environment, regulatory, lifestyle and health domains. 2. Examine the role of determinants from personal, occupational, workplace environment, regulatory, lifestyle and health risk domains in truck driver physical health, mental health and driving performance. 3. Identify potential avenues for intervention to improve the health of Australian truck drivers.

This project sought to achieve the following study objectives via analysis of a life insurance claims dataset:1.To explore the feasibility of using life insurance claim data to understand non work related death claims in transport workers.2. To describe the major cause of death claims by Australian transport workers for whom life insurance lump sum payments for death are paid.3.To determine the number and rate of Australian transport workers forwhom life insurance lump sum payments for death are paid, by ageand cause of death (COD).4.To examine the trends in death claims over time by COD.

The primary aim of this component of the Driving Health project was to identify and explore the factors influencing and promoting health and wellbeing for truck drivers from their perspective and that of their family.A further aim was to explore possible interventions that could promote better health from the truck driver’s perspective. The findings identified seven categories of factors that influence professional truck driver health and when they are balanced, can promote wellbeing.

This ninth report describes the results from the intervention phase of the Driving Health study, implementing the Driving Health Allocator Training Program with direct managers of drivers in the Australian trucking industry. This study aimed to: 1. Examine the feasibility of an online training program aimed at increasing awareness of driver health and wellbeing at the manager level. 2. Identify the degree to which managers feel they have influence on factors impacting driver health. 3. Determine if the awareness training resulted in a change in the perception of managers. 4. Determine if awareness training changed the actions a manager would take to help a struggling driver.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a neuroinvasive flavivirus initiating an immunopathological response that causes lethal encephalitis. Recently, in a mouse model of intranasal WNV infection we showed intravenous immune-modifying microparticles (IMP) reduce CNS infiltration of Ly6Chi inflammatory monocytes by 50%, resulting in >60% survival in this lethal model. IMP+ inflammatory monocytes are sequestered by the spleen in the red pulp, with many IMP in marginal zone macrophages (MZM). Depletion of MZM with clodronate during WNV infection did not impair IMP efficacy. However, splenectomy abrogated the survival effect of IMP treatment. Importantly, splenectomised survivors showed long-term WNV immunity. Thus, by a yet undefined mechanism, the spleen, but not MZM, mediates the efficacy of IMP treatment in WNV encephalitis, but is not crucial for immunity, suggesting a role for secondary lymphoid organs in generating the adaptive immune response and contributing to immunopathology. Investigating leukocyte population dynamics in this model, we showed significant clonal expansion in the cervical lymph node, while the mesenteric and inguinal nodes had reduced T cell numbers. Our data suggest that T cells migrate to the cervical lymph nodes to contribute to the T cell effector populations generated in the adaptive immune response to CNS infection.
