1. The effects of climate on annual variation in reproductive output in Snapping Turtles ( Chelydra serpentina).

Abstract: Reptiles are highly dependent on climatic patterns to regulate their behavior and physiology, and studies of the effects of climate on the biology of organisms are increasingly important given expected climate change. Our study examined the effects of climate variation over 15 of the 26 years between 1990 and 2015 on the reproductive output of the Snapping Turtle ( Chelydra serpentina (Linnaeus, 1758)). Egg mass, clutch size, and clutch mass (relative to body size) were significantly higher in years following warmer temperatures in September and October of the year before reproduction, but not related to temperatures in April and May just before reproduction. Of the above life-history traits, egg mass varied the least across years, and after warm autumns small turtles (225-285 mm carapace length) increased clutch mass by increasing clutch size but not egg mass. In contrast, under the same conditions, large turtles increased clutch mass by increasing egg mass but not clutch size. Our data suggest optimal egg mass may vary with female size. Climate change may already have impacted reproductive output in Snapping Turtles at the site because temperatures during September and October have increased about 0.5 °C each decade for the last 45 years. 2. An alpine-breeding songbird can adjust dawn incubation rhythms to annual thermal regimes.

Abstract: Small-bodied birds engaging in incubation by a single sex experience a tradeoff between incubating to create a buffered thermal environment for their eggs and foraging to meet their own energetic requirements. This tradeoff is intensified in alpine environments, which are characterized by cold and variable conditions. We monitored the incubation rhythms of alpine Horned Larks (Eremophila alpestris) in British Columbia, Canada, across different annual thermal regimes (2005: moderate; 2006: warm; 2010: cold overnight; 2011: cold during the day). In this species, females alone incubated and left their nests to forage at dawn, following 7 hr of nighttime incubation in near-freezing conditions. However, with early morning ambient temperatures still <5°C, this placed embryos at high risk of chilling during incubation recesses. Focusing on behavioral decisions made by females at dawn (06:00-08:00 hours), we examined relationships between incubation rhythms and ambient temperature among years for evidence of variable responses to temperature. In all years, females spent more time off the nest at dawn in warmer temperatures, but in 2010, which was colder overnight, the slope of the line relating attentiveness to ambient temperature was steeper, indicating that females left their nests at colder temperatures compared with other years. In 2010 females also took shorter recesses at cold temperatures. Hatching success remained high in 2010 relative to warm or moderate years; however, overwinter survival of females declined to 48% from 2010 to 2011 compared with 72% in earlier years. When faced with exceptional thermal constraints, alpine Horned Larks made behavioral adjustments to their incubation rhythms and were able to maintain fecundity. However, potential survival costs to females implies a shift in balance of the parent-offspring tradeoff, revealing limits to coping mechanisms of alpine-breeding Horned Larks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Understanding evapotranspiration and its long-term trends is essential for water cycle studies, modeling and for water uses. Spatial and temporal analysis of evapotranspiration is therefore important for the management of water resources, particularly in the context of climate change. The objective of this study is to analyze the trend of reference evapotranspiration (ET0) as well as its sensitivity to climatic variables in the Senegal River basin. Mann-Kendall&rsquo, s test and Sen&rsquo, s slope were used to detect trends and amplitude changes in ET0 and climatic variables that most influence ET0. Results show a significant increase in annual ET0 for 32% of the watershed area over the 1984&ndash, 2017 period. A significant decrease in annual ET0 is observed for less than 1% of the basin area, mainly in the Sahelian zone. On a seasonal scale, ET0 increases significantly for 32% of the basin area during the dry season and decreases significantly for 4% of the basin during the rainy season. Annual maximum, minimum temperatures and relative humidity increase significantly for 68%, 81% and 37% of the basin, respectively. However, a significant decrease in wind speed is noted in the Sahelian part of the basin. The wind speed decrease and relative humidity increase lead to the decrease in ET0 and highlight a &ldquo, paradox of evaporation&rdquo, in the Sahelian part of the Senegal River basin. Sensitivity analysis reveals that, in the Senegal River basin, ET0 is more sensitive to relative humidity, maximum temperature and solar radiation.

Abstract: The West African Monsoon (WAM) has undergone drastic changes in the recent past causing dramatic impacts on populations. After 30 years of devastating drought, the last two decades experienced a growing number of damaging floods concurrent with ongoing episodes of water shortages and famines. This raised the issue of a more extreme climate in the Sahel with more intense rainfall and dry spells. This chapter gives an overview of progress on documenting the rainfall extremes in the Sahel, a subject that has long been ignored in the literature. It focuses on statistical characteristics of extremes, on their trends in the context of WAM decadal variability and on the physical mechanisms involved in their occurrence. Based on recent literature and original analyses of daily rain gauge records in the central Sahel, a significant intensification of the Sahelian rainfall regime is confirmed over the last 15 years: more extreme events, larger size storms, accompanied by a deficit in the occurrence of less intense events. From a composite of 20 extreme storms in Ouagadougou, some key atmospheric conditions are shown to drive extreme precipitation, including an intense southerly monsoon flux coincident with strong African easterly waves and a large-scale moist anomaly at the regional scale.

Abstract: Radar altimetry, initially developed to observe the surface topography of the ocean, is now commonly used for the monitoring of inland water bodies. In this study, an altimetry-based gauging network was built in the Ogooue River Basin (ORB), in Gabon, Central Africa. It is composed of altimetry-based virtual stations (VS) under the altimetry tracks of ERS-2/ENVISAT/ SARAL, Cryosat-2, Sentinel-3A and Jason-2/Jason-3. River discharge was estimated from 1995 to 2017 combining water level records from several virtual stations close to Lambarene gauge station and the rating curve from this station. Very good agreement was found in terms of R (>0.95), RMSE and annual discharge.

Abstract: Study region : The study considers six precipitation stations located in Senegal, West Africa. Senegal is located in the Sahel, an area that is threatened by climate variability and change. Both droughts and extreme rainfall have been an issue in recent years. Study focus : Two different statistical downscaling techniques were applied to the outputs of four regional climate models at six selected precipitation stations in Senegal. First, the delta-change method was applied to the mean annual precipitation as well as the 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100-year return period daily precipitation events. Second, a quantile–quantile transformation (QQ) was used to downscale the monthly distributions of precipitation simulated by regional climate models (RCMs). The 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100-year daily precipitation events were afterward calculated. All extreme events were calculated assuming that maximum annual daily precipitations follow the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution. The two-sided Kolmogorov–Smirnov (KS) test was finally used to assess the performance of the quantile–quantile transformation as well as the GEV distribution fit for the annual maximum daily precipitation. New hydrological insights for the region : Results show that the two downscaling techniques generally agree on the direction of the change when applied to the outputs of same RCM, but some cases lead to very different projections of the direction and magnitude of the change. Projected changes indicate adecline in mean precipitation except for one RCM over one region in Senegal. Projected changes in extreme precipitations are not consistent across stations and return periods. The choice of the downscaling technique has more effect on the estimation of extreme daily precipitations of return period equal or greater than ten years than the choice of the climate models.

Abstract: En « Amazonie des rivières », la période de basses eaux permet la mise en culture de vastes zones exondées et fertiles sur les berges des rivières et dans les plaines d’inondation. La variabilité des extrêmes hydrologiques et celle de la structure du cycle de décrue, facteurs réputés importants pour la qualité des récoltes sont explorés à la station fluviométrique de Tamshiyacu sur le fleuve Amazonas. Le riz, culture rentable dans cette région, est notre référence. Les résultats ne présentent pas les liens supposés entre résultats agricoles et durée de la saison de basses eaux ou vitesse de remontée des eaux. Néanmoins, ils montrent la baisse des étiages, l’allongement de la durée de décrue en relation avec un retard de la montée des eaux et une accélération de la remontée des eaux pendant la période 1985-2015. In the northwestern Amazon basin, the low water period favors flood recession farming on large emerging fertile surfaces on the river banks and in the inundations plains. The variability of hydrological extremes and of the structure of the flood recession cycle are analyzed in the fluviometric Tamshiyacu station on the Amazonas River, as they are considered as important for the crop quality. Rice cropping which is a profitable activity in this region is neither related to the duration of low-waters, nor to the speed of the rising water. But this work show that since 1985, low water levels have decreased while the duration of the low water period has increased. Moreover, there has been an acceleration of the speed of the water rising. En el noroeste de la cuenca amazónica, el periodo de estiaje de los ríos favorece el cultivo en vastas zonas fértiles que emergentes en los bancos de arena y las planicies de inundación. La variabilidad de los extremos hidrológicos y de la estructura del ciclo de recesión de las aguas son factores importantes para la calidad y cantidad de la cosecha. Estos factores hidrológicos son analizados en la estación hidrométrica de Tamshiyacu en el Río Amazonas (Perú). Como referencia se emplea el cultivo de arroz, que es rentable en esta región. Los resultados presentados no muestran relación entre la producción agrícola y la duración del periodo de aguas bajas o la velocidad de incremento de las aguas. No obstante, este estudio muestra que durante el periodo 1985-2015 el nivel de las aguas bajas ha disminuido, mientras que la duración del periodo de estiaje se ha incrementado. Además se documenta una aceleración en la velocidad en el incremento de las aguas entre el periodo de aguas bajas y aguas altas. Na « Amazônia dos grandes rios » o período de aguas baixas permite cultivos em vastas zonas férteis de várzeas ao longo dos rios e planicies de inundação. A variabilidade dos extremos hidrológicos e a da estrutura dos ciclos de descidas são fatores importantes para a qualidade e quantidade de colheita. Exploramos esta relação na estação hidrológica de Tamshiyacu no rio Amazonas, Peru. O arroz, cultura rentável nesta região, é referência. Os resultados apresentados mostram pouca relação entre a duração das águas baixas ou a velocidade da subida. Mas este estudo mostra que desde 1985-2015 o nível das águas baixas tem diminuido enquanto que a duração do mesmo período tem aumentado. Além do que tem havido uma aceleração da velocidade de subida das aguas.

Abstract: Le bilan en eau du lac est la différence entre les apports par la pluie et les rivières, et les pertes par évapotranspiration et infiltration vers les nappes souterraines. Il n'y a pas d'exutoire de surface. Le Chari est le principal contributeur des apports au lac avec 88 % de l'apport total en eau. Pour la période de Petit Tchad observée (1988-2010) son apport moyen a été de 21,1 km3/an. La rivière Yobé (Komadougou Yobé) a apporté environ 0,5 km3 par an, soit 2 % des apports totaux. Les débits de l'El Beïd, qui est l'exutoire du Yaéré, varient en fonction des crues du Logone avec une moyenne de 0,3 km3/an. La pluie directe sur le lac apporte environ 1,9 km3/an. L'évaporation est le facteur majeur des pertes en eau du lac, avec une moyenne de 22,6 km3/an soit 96 % des pertes, tandis que les infiltrations vers les nappes d'eau souterraines sont estimées à 1 km3/an. La plus grande partie (95 %) de la pluie qui tombe sur le bassin versant actif du lac repart dans l'atmosphère par évapotranspiration (évaporation des surfaces humides et transpiration par la végétation). Les plaines inondables, d'une surface totale de près de 80 000 km2, constituent une surface évaporatoire importante qui contribue à ces pertes. Il en résulte que lorsque la pluie sur le bassin varie de ± 10 %) autour de sa valeur moyenne, l'apport au lac par le Chari fluctue de ± 30 %. Comme sa surface varie en fonction des apports, le lac Tchad, comme d'autres lacs fermés, est qualifié de lac amplificateur. (Résumé d'auteur)

Abstract: In Cameroon, a 3-year randomized, double-blind controlled trial was conducted to determine if ivermectin, given at 3-monthly intervals and/or at high doses (800 microg/kg), had a greater effect on adult Onchocerca volvulus than standard annual doses of 150 microg/kg. Adverse reactions were recorded and analysed in a logistic regression model with random effects to assess the influence of the dose and rhythm of treatment on their occurrence. After the first dose, 3-monthly treatment was associated with a clearly reduced risk of reactions, especially oedematous swellings, pruritus and back-pain. Oedematous swellings and subjective ocular troubles were found to be associated with high doses of ivermectin. These results reinforce former parasitological conclusions that it would be desirable to evaluate the feasibility and effects on transmission of large-scale 3-monthly treatments with standard doses of ivermectin for onchocerciasis control. Owing to the unexpected ocular reactions, the use of high doses to counteract any future resistance of O. volvulus to ivermectin should be considered with caution.

Abstract: International audience; We analyze mean and seasonal change of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and Salinity (SSS) in the Solomon and Bismarck Seas, using 1977-2009 in situ data collected from Voluntary Observing Ships. Covariability of these two variables with surface wind, altimeter-derived and model-derived horizontal currents, precipitation, and Sepik River discharge are examined. SST and SSS show large annual oscillations in the Solomon Sea, with the coldest and saltiest waters occurring in July/August mainly due to horizontal advection. In contrast, they show large semiannual oscillations in the Bismarck Sea. There, the coldest and saltiest waters happen in January/February, when the northwest monsoon winds drive coastal upwelling, and in July/August, when the New Guinea Coastal Current advects cold and high-salinity waters from the Solomon Sea through Vitiaz Strait. The low SSS values observed in April/May, stuck between the January/February and July/August SSS maxima, are further enhanced by the Sepik River discharge annual maximum. A high-resolution model strengthens the conclusions we derive from observations. The impacts of ENSO on SST and SSS are also discussed with, for instance, saltier-than-average and fresher-than-average waters during the 2002-2003 El Niño and 2007-2008 La Niña, respectively.

16. Water balance for different land use and crop sequences under semiarid environment

Abstract: In semiarid agrosystems, improving management of soil and water resources requires developing reliable means for characterizing the temporal dynamics of soil water balance in a spatially distributed manner. The purpose of this study is to analyze soil water balance in relation to natural drivers (i.e. rainfall and soil properties) and anthropogenic forcing (i.e. land use and crop successions). We focuson a hilly watershed devoted to rainfed agriculture, so-called the Kamech watershed, which is located in the Cap Bon Peninsula, north-eastern Tunisia. The soil moisture analysis is based on in-situ data collected in different fields and during various crop growth cycles under the common cereals/legumes/pasture cropping systems. In-situ data include water balance components and vegetation parameters. The results show that annual rainfall is mainly converted into evapotranspiration during the growing cycle for different land uses. The runoff amounts, for most of the sites, correspond to less than 10% of the rainfall amount. The evapotranspiration ratio significantly differs in relation to soil properties and cumulated rainfall. We observe large differences in soil water dynamics among the legumes (fababean and chickpea) and cereals (wheat, oat, and triticale). Soil water is larger for legume crops, despite substantial plant growth during winter-spring. This is ascribed to the shallow root systems of fababean and chickpea that induces a restricted access to deep water. Despite drought conditions during summer, bare soil following annual pasture and legumes corresponded to larger amounts of soil water as compared to cereals. The amount of available water observed ranges from 0 mm to nearly 100 mm.

Abstract: Dans le golfe de Guinée et dans le bassin du Mono, au Bénin-Togo, en particulier, la population est de plus en plus exposée aux événements de précipitations extrêmes ou à l'intensité de ces événements causant des inondations de plus en plus récurrentes dans un environnement où on assiste à une croissance démographique galopante. L'objectif de cette étude est : 1) d'analyser l'évolution des précipitations extrêmes dans le bassin au cours de la période 1988-2010 à partir de données pluviométriques krigées ; 2) d'effectuer une comparaison avec les simulations régionales à 50 km de résolution produites par les modèles MPI, ICT, SMH et METO dans le cadre du projet Européen ENSEMBLES ; 3) d'étudier les extrêmes pluvieux futurs dans les simulations produites par ces mêmes modèles pour la période 2028-2050. Les données pluviométriques sont soumises à des méthodes de traitement statistique afin de déterminer les maxima annuels de précipitation, la distribution fréquentielle des 99e centiles de précipitations journalières et les périodes de retour des extrêmes de pluies à partir de la loi GEV. Il ressort de cette étude une augmentation significative de l'intensité des pluies maximales journalières entre 1988 et 2010 dans le bassin du Mono, pouvant engendrer des risques d'inondation. L'ajustement de la loi GEV, ici de type Weibull, se révèle bien adapté pour la simulation des événements pluvieux extrêmes, avec des périodes de retour très marquées entre deux et dix ans dans les données observées et entre deux et vingt ans dans les données simulées.

Abstract: Heat fluxes are estimated across transatlantic sections made at 4°30′S and 7°30′N in January–March 1993, following Hall and Bryden (1982. Deep-Sea Research 29, 339–359). Particular care is given to the computation of Ekman volume and heat fluxes, which are assessed both (a) from the windstress data for the period of the cruise and (b) from the comparison between geostrophic and Vessel Mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (VM-ADCP) velocities. In contrast with previous studies, the two estimates for Ekman fluxes do not converge for either section: (a) (11.5±0.5 Sv; 1.01±0.05 PW) across 7°30′N and (−9.3±1.2 Sv; −0.85±0.12 PW) across 4°30′S when windstress data at the date of the hydrographic stations are used; (b) (6.3±1.1 Sv; 0.56±0.09 PW) across 7°30′N and (−3.4±3.0 Sv; −0.35±0.24 PW) across 4°30′N when the ageostrophic transport above the thermocline is used. The divergence would have been even greater at 4°30′S if the strong ageostrophic signal beneath the thermocline, which brings a transport of (8.4 Sv; 0.82 PW), had been considered. The corresponding total meridional heat fluxes are: (a) 1.40±0.16 PW and (b) 0.95±0.20 PW across 7°30′N, (a) 1.05±0.12 PW and (b) 1.67±0.14 PW (2.39±0.14 PW when the subthermocline ageostrophic transport is taken into account) across 4°30′S. The estimates based on windstress data are compared with the results from an inverse model (Lux and Mercier, 1999) to show the importance of the heat flux due to the deviation of the local depth-averaged potential temperature from its average over the section, which is neglected in the Hall and Bryden (1982. Deep-Sea Research 29, 339–359) method but is not negligible in our computation in which we do not isolate the transport of the western boundary current east of the 200 m isobath; this corrective flux amounts here to −0.19 PW across 7°30′N and 0.33 PW across 4°30′S. The seasonal variability of the meridional heat flux across 7°30′N is studied through the hydrographic data collected during the ETAMBOT 1–2 cruises, which repeated the 7°30′N section west of 35°W in September 1995 and April 1996. When the section is completed east of 35°W with CITHER 1 data and when windstress data are used for the computation of the Ekman transport, the estimates for the meridional heat fluxes are 0.20±0.14 PW in September 1995 and 1.69±0.27 PW in April 1996. The estimates fit well with results from numerical models.

Abstract: Thanks to the agreement found between in situ measurements and TOPEX/POSEIDON data in the western tropical Atlantic Ocean, a realistic picture of the spatial and temporal variability over the 1992–1997 period is obtained. The sea level variability clearly emphasizes three ranges of variability. The intraseasonal variability is associated with propagating features north of the equator, consistent with a first baroclinic Rossby wave characteristic. The annual variability, which represents the largest part of the variability, describes the seasonal cycle of the North Equatorial Countercurrent; but, more interesting, is a clear year-to-year variability in the northernmost part of the area. The surface currents also reveal an intraseasonal tendency with a peak of energy at 62 days at 5°N. Upper layer volume transport across 38°W and between 3°N and 9°N shows a regular seasonal contrast mostly due to the 3°N–6°N region. Year-to-year variations are also clearly evidenced. The eastward transport loses about 35% of its strength in the second half of 1995 compared with 1994. This event is followed by a stronger than usual westward transport in early 1996, and in early 1997, the transport seems abnormally eastward. However, contrary to the seasonal cycle, this interannual variability occurs mainly in the 6°N–9°N band. Interhemispheric transport computed across 7°30′N, between 50°W and 35°W, is northward during the whole period 1992–1995. A seasonal cycle can be detected with maximum transport during boreal winter and minimum in spring. An interesting result is the increasing tendency of the northward transport from April 1993 until boreal fall 1995, when the maximum value for the period is reached.

Abstract: Expendable bathythermograph (XBT) data and the climatological temperature/salinity relationship were used to calculate the mean annual cycle of dynamic height and geostrophic transport of major currents relative to 400 db along five shipping tracks covering a large part of the tropical Pacific Ocean. The data were selected in bands centered on the most frequently repeated XBT tracklines for the period 1967-1988. Long-term bimonthly mean temperature was calculated in 1° latitude bins along the tracks. The transport function (vertically integrated dynamic height) was then calculated using the mean temperature/salinity relationship. The mean annual cycle of transport of the North Equatorial Current (NEC), the North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC) and the South Equatorial Current (SEC) (south of 2.5°S) were determined between the ridges and troughs of the transport function. The stochastic errors in bimonthly mean transports were 1-2 Sverdrups on the most sampled tracks. Mean transports of the NEC and NECC increase regularly with longitude from east to west. The NECC has a large annual cycle with a transport-maximum during northern fall and winter. Seasonal variations of the NEC are small. Seasonal variations of the SEC are slightly larger, and they have considerably different phase from track to track. The variation of thermal structure associated with the currents is described. The results of this study are compared in detail to the results of earlier studies of the transports. The differences between the studies are larger than the expected stochastic errors in the mean transports due to differences in the definition of boundaries of the currents and to differences in the procedure for calculating the mean annual variation. The results of all the studies are summarised to facilitate future comparisons to ocean general circulation models and other applications. (Résumé d'auteur)

Abstract: International audience; [1] To address the challenging issue of estimating mineral dust emissions from the semi-arid Sahel, a modeling approach is developed by combining two specific models: one dedicated to the simulation of the seasonal herbaceous layer in the Sahel (STEP) and the other to the estimation of dust emissions (MB). The area of interest is the Sahelian belt (12 N-20 N, 20 W-35 E) and the simulations were performed at a 0.25 spatial resolution over a 4-year period (2004-2007). The rainfall forcing is provided by a TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) satellite-derived product; the other meteorological data are ECMWF products. An empirical parameterization is used to estimate the surface roughness and its temporal dynamics according to the characteristics of the simulated vegetation in terms of surface cover and height. Where no vegetation grows, the surface properties are considered as constant in time and are derived from the POLDER-1 satellite measurements. Simulations are constrained step by step by comparisons with observations. Simulated annual dust fluxes emitted from the whole area range from approximately 100 Mt to 400 Mt depending on the year, in good agreement with previous works dealing with Saharan dust emissions. For the fringe where herbaceous vegetation can affect dust emissions, the annual dust emission fluxes range between 0.5 Mt and 20 Mt depending on the year. Inhibition of dust emissions due to the seasonal dynamics of vegetation and surface soil moisture over this fringe varies between 20% and 35%. Citation: Pierre, C., G. Bergametti, B. Marticorena, E. Abstract: International audience; In this work we document and analyze the hydrological annual cycles characterized by a rapid transition between low and high flows in the Amazonas River (Peruvian Amazon) and we show how these events, which may impact vulnerable riverside residents, are related to regional climate variability. Our analysis is based on comprehensive discharge, rainfall and average suspended sediment data sets. Particular attention is paid to the 2010-11 hydrological year, when an unprecedented abrupt transition from the extreme September 2010 drought (8300 m3 s-1) to one of the four highest discharges in April 2011 (49 500 m3 s-1) was recorded at Tamshiyacu (Amazonas River). This unusual transition is also observed in average suspended sediments. Years with a rapid increase in discharge are characterized by negative sea surface temperature anomalies in the central equatorial Pacific during austral summer, corresponding to a La Niña-like mode. It originates a geopotential height wave train over the subtropical South Pacific and southeastern South America, with a negative anomaly along the southern Amazon and the southeastern South Atlantic convergence zone region. As a consequence, the monsoon flux is retained over the Amazon and a strong convergence of humidity occurs in the Peruvian Amazon basin, favoring high rainfall and discharge. These features are also reported during the 2010-11 austral summer, when an intense La Niña event characterized the equatorial Pacific.

Abstract: L'objectif de cette note consiste à analyser la variation annuelle du niveau du lac Tchad pour différents scénarios d'apports stabilisés (ie reproduits à l'identique chaque année). On détermine dans un premier temps l'hydrogramme caractéristique annuel du Chari à Ndjamena pour différentes valeurs de volume annuel écoulé. Chacun de ces hydrogrammes est ensuite utilisé pour définir un scénario d'apport stabilisé, dont l'effet sur le lac Tchad est simulé avec le modèle hydrologique de Bader et al (2010). Chaque scénario entraîne le lac vers un état asymptotique, dans lequel l'évolution annuelle du niveau de chaque cuvette se répète à l'identique chaque année. En fonction du volume annuel apporté par le Chari en régime stabilisé, on analyse : i) à quel stade du lac (sec, petit, moyen, grand) correspond cet état asymptotique ; ii) l'amplitude de variation annuelle de superficie du lac, d'intérêt primordial pour les cultures de décrue. On analyse également le temps mis par le lac pour passer d'un état asymptotique à l'autre en cas de modification du régime d'apport stabilisé. Abstract: The production of aboveground soft tissue represents an important share of total net primary production in tropical rain forests. Here we draw from a large number of published and unpublished datasets (n=81 sites) to assess the determinants of litterfall variation across South American tropical forests. We show that across old-growth tropical rainforests, litterfall averages 8.61±1.91 Mg ha−1 yr−1 (mean ± standard deviation, in dry mass units). Secondary forests have a lower annual litterfall than old-growth tropical forests with a mean of 8.01±3.41 Mg ha−1 yr−1. Annual litterfall shows no significant variation with total annual rainfall, either globally or within forest types. It does not vary consistently with soil type, except in the poorest soils (white sand soils), where litterfall is significantly lower than in other soil types (5.42±1.91 Mg ha−1 yr−1). We also study the determinants of litterfall seasonality, and find that it does not depend on annual rainfall or on soil type. However, litterfall seasonality is significantly positively correlated with rainfall seasonality. Finally, we assess how much carbon is stored in reproductive organs relative to photosynthetic organs. Mean leaf fall is 5.74±1.83 Mg ha−1 yr−1 (71% of total litterfall). Mean allocation into reproductive organs is 0.69±0.40 Mg ha−1 yr−1 (9% of total litterfall). The investment into reproductive organs divided by leaf litterfall increases with soil fertility, suggesting that on poor soils, the allocation to photosynthetic organs is prioritized over that to reproduction. Finally, we discuss the ecological and biogeochemical implications of these results.

Abstract: International audience; To monitor root growth dynamics of rubber trees (RRIM 600) along a deep soil profile, a permanent access-well ~ 4.5 m deep was built and operated since the end of 2006. This facility allows the direct observation of root growth dynamics using so-called “root windows”, through which roots can be observed at regular time intervals. Using this access-well, we could estimate root length density and the decay of root tissues at various soil depths. Initial results were based on a 17-month observation. Some root incubations were also conducted for one year. Result from these experiments indicated that: A root growth peak occurred between May and June at a soil depths shallower than 150 cm, while it generally did not occur before November deeper in the soil profile; - Fine roots growing at all depths had a life expectancy of months rather than weeks and a large proportion survived for 12 to 17 months without showing any clear sign of senescence; - Fine root length density decreased by more than one order of magnitude from 5 to 50 cm while fine root biomass found below 100 cm still accounted for more than a third of the overall fine root biomass of the studied rubber trees; - The decay rate of dead root material at a soil depth of 400 cm was slow, with a half-life on the order of 21 months. Together with long fine roots' survival, this indicates that the residence time of carbon originating from fine rubber tree roots spans several years.

Abstract: The Saloum river (Senegal, West Africa) is an inverse estuary, with salinities of more than 80 g l−1 reached 100 km from the sea. Monthly salinity measurements have been done 120 km inland since 1927. Seasonal salinity increase (during dry season) proceeds at a constant rate (⋍ 0.3 g l−1d−1). This would indicate that evaporating water masses are shallow (average depth ⋍ 0.4 m). Since 1950, annual maximum and minimum salinities have been increasing, with decreasing rains, at a rate of about 1.3 g l−1 per year. Across the 1927–1987 period, both yearly extremes are well correlated with rainfall in the previous years, indicating a “memory” spanning three years or less. We have computed a water budget as a function of rainfall with three different hypotheses about the extent of the evaporating surfaces. Comparison with actual data indicate that about 60% of the lowlands are evaporating as shallow open waters would. We discuss the implications of these results for the possible future of the estuaries in the region, especially in the “green-house effect” hypothesis.

Abstract: International audience; Le déficit de pluie des 30 dernières années au Sahel est le plus souvent analysé de manière globale, ce qui ne permet pas d'en étudier l'impact sur le cycle hydrologique. L'étude conjointe de données fournies par le Centre Régional AGRHYMET et d'un jeu de données haute résolution collectées dans le cadre de l'observatoire AMMA-CATCH Niger permet d'analyser ici quels sont les facteurs les plus marquants qui différencient années humides et années sèches au Sahel. Cette analyse explore la variabilité des pluies à différentes échelles temporelles pour des années sèches et humides: à l'échelle annuelle, à travers la sensibilité de l'indice pluviométrique à la taille du domaine considéré; à l'échelle de l'événement, par la variation de deux paramètres définissant le régime pluviométrique (à savoir la hauteur moyenne de pluie par événement et le nombre moyen d'événements par jour); et au pas de temps inférieur, en étudiant les distributions des intensités de pluie.

Abstract: Ongoing global climatic change initiated by the anthropogenic release of carbon dioxide is a matter of intense debate. We focus both on the impact of these climatic changes on the global hydrological cycle and on the amplitude of the increase of global and continental runoff over the last century, in relation to measured temperature increases. In this contribution, we propose an original statistical wavelet-based method for the reconstruction of the monthly discharges of worldwide largest rivers. This method provides a data-based approximation of the evolution of the annual continental and global runoffs over the last century. A consistent correlation is highlighted between global annual temperature and runoff, suggesting a 4% global runoff increase by 1 °C global temperature rise. However, this global trend should be qualified at the regional scale where both increasing and decreasing trends are identified. North America runoffs appear to be the most sensitive to the recent climatic changes. Finally, this contribution provides the first experimental data-based evidence demonstrating the link between the global warming and the intensification of the global hydrological cycle. This corresponds to more intense evaporation over oceans coupled to continental precipitation increase or continental evaporation decrease. This process finally leads to an increase of the global continental runoff.
