Introduction: Numerous studies have shown that natural mechanical waves have the potential to assess the elastic properties of the myocardium. When the Aortic and Mitral valves close, a shear wave is produced, which provides insights into tissue stiffness. In addition, the Atrial Kick (AK) generates a wave similar to Pulse Waves (PWs) in arteries, providing another way to assess tissue stiffness. However, tissue anisotropy can also impact PW propagation, which is currently underexplored. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the impact of anisotropy on PW propagation in a phantom. Methods: Tube phantoms were created using Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA). Anisotropy was induced between two sets of two freeze-thaw cycles by stretching and twisting the material. The study first tests and validates the procedure of making helical anisotropic vessel phantoms using the shear wave imaging technique (by estimating the shear wave speed at different probe angles). Using plane wave ultrasound tomography synchronized with a peristaltic pump, 3D high frame rate imaging is performed and used to detect the 3D propagation pattern of PW for each manufactured vessel phantom. Finally, the study attempts to extract the anisotropic coefficient of the vessel using pulse wave propagation angle. Results: The Shear wave imaging results obtained for the isotropic vessel show very similar values for each probe angle. On the contrary, the results obtained for the axial anisotropy vessel show a region with a higher shear wave speed at about 0°, corresponding to the long axis of the vessel. Finally, the results obtained for the helical anisotropy depicted increasing shear wave velocity value from -20° to 20°. For the axial phantom, the wavefront of the pulse wave is perpendicular to the long axis of the vessel, while oriented for the helical anisotropic vessels phantom. The pulse wave propagation angle increased with the number of twists made during the vessel manufacturing. Discussion: The results show that anisotropy can be induced in PVA vessel phantoms by stretching and twisting the material in freeze-thaw cycles. The findings also suggest that vessel anisotropy affects pulse wave propagation angles. Various reports have been published regarding quantitative evaluations of intraoperative fluorescent intensity studies using indocyanine green (ICG) with videoangiography (VAG). The effects of scattering and point‐spread functions (PSF) on quantitative ICG‐VAG evaluations have not been investigated. Clinically, when ICG is administered through the peripheral vein, it reaches the tissue intra‐arterially. To achieve more reliable intraoperative quantitative intensity evaluations, we examined the impact of high‐intensity structures on close areas. The study was conducted using a phantom model and surgical fluorescent microscope. A region of interest (ROI) was created for the vessel model and another ROI was created within 3 cm of that. With an ROI of 6.8 mm in the vessel phantom model, 10% intensity was confirmed, even though there was no fluorescent structure. Intensity decreased gradually as the ROI moved further from the vessel model. Our study results suggest that the presence of a high‐intensity structure and the size of the ROI may affect quantitative intensity evaluations using ICG‐VAG. Results of linear regression analysis indicate that the relationship of intensity (Y) and distance (X) is as follows: Y(real/A) = 29 Exp(−0.062X) + 164.3 Exp(−1.81X). Flow phantoms are widely used in studies associated with Doppler ultrasound measurements, acting as an effective experimental validation system in cardiovascular-related research and in new algorithm/instrumentation development. The development of materials that match the acoustic and mechanical properties of the vascular system is of great interest while designing flow phantoms. Although recipes that meet the flow phantom standard defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission 61685 are already available in the literature, the standard procedure for material preparations and phantom fabrications has not been well established. In this paper, two types of flow phantoms, with and without blood vessel mimic, are described in detail in terms of the material preparation and phantom fabrication. The phantom materials chosen for the two phantoms are from published phantom studies, and their physical properties have been investigated previously. Both the flow phantoms have been scanned by ultrasound scanners and images from different modes are presented. These phantoms may be used in the validation and characterization of Doppler ultrasound measurements in blood vessels with a diameter above 1 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Ultrasound speckle tracking for carotid strain assessment has in the past decade gained interest in studies of arterial stiffness and cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to validate and directly contrast carotid strain assessment by speckle tracking applied on clinical and high-frequency ultrasound images in vitro . Four polyvinyl alcohol phantoms mimicking the carotid artery were constructed with different mechanical properties and connected to a pump generating carotid flow profiles. Gray-scale ultrasound long- and short-axis images of the phantoms were obtained using a standard clinical ultrasound system, Vivid 7 (GE Healthcare, Horten, Norway) and a high-frequency ultrasound system, Vevo 2100 (FUJIFILM, VisualSonics, Toronto, Canada) with linear-array transducers (12L / MS250). Radial, longitudinal and circumferential strains were estimated using an in-house speckle tracking algorithm and compared with reference strain acquired by sonomicrometry. Overall, the estimated strain corresponded well with the reference strain. The correlation between estimated peak strain in clinical ultrasound images and reference strain was 0.91 ( p < 0.001) for radial strain, 0.73 ( p < 0.001) for longitudinal strain and 0.90 ( p < 0.001) for circumferential strain and for high-frequency ultrasound images 0.95 ( p < 0.001) for radial strain, 0.93 ( p < 0.001) for longitudinal strain and 0.90 ( p < 0.001) for circumferential strain. A significant larger bias and root mean square error was found for circumferential strain estimation on clinical ultrasound images compared to high frequency ultrasound images, but no significant difference in bias and root mean square error was found for radial and longitudinal strain when comparing estimation on clinical and high-frequency ultrasound images. The agreement between sonomicrometry and speckle tracking demonstrates that carotid strain assessment by ultrasound speckle tracking is feasible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this work was to investigate the potential of a novel forward-viewing intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) system for flow quantification and colour flow imaging combined with B-mode imaging. A stiff 3.8-mm diameter catheter was used to scan a 72° sector ahead of its tip. Operating at 30 MHz, the catheter was integrated with an IVUS scanner and a radiofrequency (RF) data-acquisition system. RF data were software processed for producing B-mode images and deriving velocity estimates. Steady flow in the range of 45 to 146 mL/min toward the catheter, was used in wall-less tissue-mimicking phantoms simulating healthy lumen (8-mm diameter), 30% diameter symmetrical stenosis and 37% diameter eccentric stenosis. The system provided colour flow images and good estimation of peak velocity and volumetric flows (within 1% to 9% and 16% to 48%, respectively, of calculated values) at 5 to 7 mm distal to the catheter.
